Liberal candidate CarriePowell Davidson came in third with 21.8 per cent, the Green Party’s Glenn Sollitt came in fourth with 11.7 per cent and Marxist-Leninist candidate Barbara Biley came in last with 0.2 per cent.

But Johns, who drove into Port Alberni at noon on Oct. 20 after spending election night in Parksville, is looking forward.

“The first step is getting set up so we can be efficient and effective,” Johns said.

Once he’s got his team set up, that will be his first focus.

“We’re going to have scheduled town halls and open houses,” Johns said.

“People can bring their issues to me and I will bring those issues to Ottawa. I don’t think people are going to have to worry about me being accessible.”

While Johns got just over a third of all the votes cast in the riding, he says plans to represent each and every single resident in this riding.

“First and foremost and as a Member of Parliament I will be representing all my constituents.”

Green Party candidate Glenn Sollitt was a distant fourth in voting for Courtenay-Alberni in the federal election this week, but he wasn’t crying the blues.

“All things considered, actually it’s going OK,” Sollitt said from Qualicum Beach. “I had so many positive interactions. I feel silly saying this, but I wouldn’t have been shocked to have won

tonight. It felt that good going in…I’m just trying to reconcile the extent to which I was wrong.”

While a second-place finish would have been “palatable,” fourth is a little tougher to swallow, he said.

“Where is that disconnect? It’s going to take some time to figure out. If it was just our riding, that’s one issue, but we didn’t elect a second Green MP anywhere.”

“All the people involved have put in a huge amount of effort and a lot of work to make it a BearSmart community and it’s awfully frustrating to see all this work being done by people in the government and non-government groups and people leaving these garbage containers open and the bears getting the reward,” said Ackles.

“It’s not something that’s new, it’s not something that’s startling information—if a bear gets into garbage, it’s going to become conditioned to garbage and habituated to humans being around them.”

Once a bear becomes habituated to humans, Ackles adds, there’s not

much that can be done to save it.

“At that point, when the bear’s

behaviour changes to become defensive to that garbage and aggressive or threatening towards people, that’s not good for the bear and usually results in the bear being destroyed.”

According to the Ministry of Environment’s WildSafe BC Wildlife Alert Reporting Program, one black bear was destroyed by conservation officers within the Alberni Valley in October of this year.

Destroying bears is a last resort, Ackles said.

“When my partner or I are forced to put down a bear whose behaviour has gotten to that it’s conditioned or habituated, we’re the ‘evil-doers’ and it is frustrating.”

Of the 94 bearrelated incidents reported up to Oct. 20 of this year, 38 were considered to be foodconditioned—17 of those were to garbage, and 16 to fruit trees.

Bear sightings have increased from last year; from Jan. 1–Oct. 20, 2014, 60 bears were reported and 31 were food conditioned.

For 2015, the number of bears destroyed is likely to increase.

“Throughout the province we had a very strange year in weather,” he said.

That led to very few calls at the beginning of the year but now “the calls are through the roof—we’re getting up to a dozen calls a day throughout the city.”

Most of those calls don’t result in action by the conservation department but they do have traps set for several bears throughout the city.

“At this time of year, bears go into hyperphagia where they’re trying to gain on as many calories as they can—fish are in the rivers, the berries are coming to an end, they’re trying to get ready for hibernation,” said Ackles.

But on Vancouver Island, not all bears hibernate.

“If there’s food yearround, some bears don’t hibernate.”

This makes garbage not a summeronly treat for bears conditioned to consider it an easy meal, which makes using bearresistant garbage containers just as important even when bears traditionally hibernated.

That means that people need to not only bear-proof their garbage, but make sure their neighbours are doing the same.

“If you have a neighbour that’s leaving their garbage unlatched or not in a bear-resistant container, report it to bylaws,” Ackles said.

“This is unacceptable—these people are destroying bears themselves. It’s very frustrating for us that all this work is being done and that people are just ignoring these simple, simple attractantmanagement

Ready or not, here we go Let’s get real about trade deals For the first time in more than a decade, Port Alberni is tinged in federal orange and not blue.

Gord Johns, the rookie NDP candidate, was successful in his bid for the federal electoral seat in the new riding of Courtenay-Alberni, ousting veteran Conservative MP John Duncan and cresting the wave of Liberal red that swept the nation.

We were heartened to see that voter turnout was an unprecedented 76.62 per cent in our new riding. This was almost 10 per cent higher than in 2011, and showed that people were invested in their community. That will be important in the coming years.

Now the onus will be on Mr. Johns to show how invested he is in our communities. For the first time since 2000, we have an MP who truly knows Port Alberni, and who spent weeks campaigning and getting to know the people and the issues that make us tick.

We expect Mr. Johns to now advocate for Port Alberni as heartily as he campaigned for people’s support. He promised that Port Alberni would not be forgotten by Ottawa after the election, and we will hold him to that promise.

He also warned that community engagement is vital: we cannot sit back and wait for him to come to us, he expects us to go to him and tell him what we need to move forward economically.

If we have one wish for the new election picture, it is that everyone play nice in the sandbox. It is time for our government to set aside the posturing of the past 78 days and get down to business.

Even a modicum of cooperation would be a welcome change.

s the dust settles from Monday’s federal election, to paraphrase former prime minister Kim Campbell, it’s time to talk about serious issues again.

The Conservatives were hoping to make 2015 a free trade election, by signing onto the world’s largest trade deal at the end of July.

But things didn’t go as planned at the talks in Maui, and Canada was among the players that walked away from the Trans-Pacific Partnership table at that time.

Then came five days of round-the-clock negotiations in Atlanta, with the U.S. pushing for a deal with Japan, Korea, Australia and other Pacific Rim powerhouses to normalize trade in 40 per cent of the world’s economy. And the TPP came together at the end of September.

Canada and B.C. essentially got what our governments were demanding, which was broad access to Pacific Rim markets and continued protection for nearly all of domestic dairy, poultry and egg markets. Also preserved was B.C.’s regulated market for logs and U.S. lumber sales.

The 200-kg gorilla of the TPP burst out in the heat of the election campaign, and the Kim Campbell rule was demonstrated again.

Much of the discussion revolved around alleged secrecy, as the legal text of the deal won’t be out for some time to come. Protected farmers downed their pitchforks, counting their blessings, and their guaranteed compensation.

The NDP was forced to come out against the TPP, as it was against

trade deals with the U.S., Mexico, Europe and others. But it’s getting lonely for them as the rest of the world moves on.

Within days of the TPP deal, the World Bank issued one of its periodic reports on “extreme poverty,” which it defines as an income of less than $1.90 U.S. a day. And 2015 is the first year when fewer than 10 per cent of the world’s people remain below this global poverty line, down from 12.8 per cent in 2012.

It’s easy for comfortable First World folks to protest conditions in running shoe and cell phone factories in India or China, but the graph of extreme poverty in those countries shows steep decline since 1990.

Trade and technology are lifting up the poorest of the world.

from Pacific Rim trade is unthinkable. We worry a lot about lumber and copper and natural gas, but the TPP also opens up huge markets for services, where much of our economic future awaits.

The question for us is simple. Can we compete in health sciences, engineering, architecture, digital media, and information technology?

Do we want to?

The TPP doesn’t change B.C.’s dependency on the United States.

As with NAFTA, our vital lumber trade remains under a separate agreement, which expired on Oct. 1.

I’m told by federal and provincial officials that at this stage, the U.S. isn’t even taking our calls on the softwood lumber agreement, which Canada and B.C. want extended. Americans are preoccupied with the TPP and domestic politics.

After decades of bitter legal actions from the American industry, the latest softwood deal has provided a rough peace.

And Monday night the Conservatives learned that the image does not always deliver the desired message.

Remember the early campaign TV ad of PM Stephen Harper in a suit and tie, toiling at his desk late at night, then turning off the lights as he exits the office?

The message was intended to be of a PM who works tirelessly to the benefit of Canadians, but the message received was reminiscent of the song, “Turn Out the Lights, The Party’s Over.”

Indeed it was.

So long, farewell To the Editor,

While viewing the televised results of Canada’s 42nd federal election on Oct.19, I heard sweet sounds of Roy Orbison playing repeatedly in my cranial Wurlitzer Jukebox. The Texas tenor’s tune It’s Over perfectly expressed my feelings about the too long 78-day

campaign, and the too long Tory 10-year tenure.

As I watched frenzied talking heads on the TV screen, memorable movie and literary quotes crept into that wizened and overworked little cavity between my ears : “You can’t handle the truth”, Jack Nicholson’s sneering line in A Few Good Men seemed to fit Stephen Harper — who vainly attempted to be an attractive candidate.

“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate”, the final words from Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke would regrettably be accredited to Thomas Mulcair—whose three-and-a-half stellar years as Leader of the Official Opposition didn’t translate to popular support on the campaign trail, for some unfortunate reason.

“Fancies are like shadows; you can’t cage them, they’re such wayward, dancing things”, from Anne Of Green Gables certainly suited Elizabeth May: only three nights before election day, she confidently told CTV News’ Lisa LaFlamme that her party would

capture between 12 and 15 seats. In fact, she has to be satisfied with one seat.

“Carpe Diem.

Seize the day, boys.

Make your lives extraordinary”, were Robin’s Williams’ words of wisdom from Dead Poets Society, and seem custommade for jubilant Justin Trudeau — whom voters believed to really be ready, despite those many negative ads that suggested the exact opposite.

Now comes the shouting, and the inevitable question of how long before campaign promises are broken.

Desmond Tutu once said: “Hope is being able to see there is light, despite all of the darkness.” Canadians are thankful to see the campaigns are over, and to shine the light across the 49th parallel where the US has just under 400 days remaining in its presidential election campaigns.

Keeping up the land pressure To the Editor,

The former ADSS site is our land, community land under the jurisdiction

of School District 70. It has incredible potential on an absolutely ideal ninehectare footprint for a complex long term care development.

I see a long term care development that includes, not just long term care beds, but transitional housing, even a senior living complex that offers transition into additional care as the need arise. What a draw the therapeutic view from the bleacher like setting, off 16 Avenue would be for those needing transitional housing.

The presence of green space and easy access to walking trails adds appeal.

I see a doctorage as an incentive to bring new blood into the community as part of such a development.

Offer such living accommodation in exchange for a commitment to care within the long term care facility for two or three years.

The school district, at this point, holds all the cards. What a positive it would be if they took ownership of this cause.

But someone in the city (economic development office?), regional district, or school district needs, in my view, to take

the lead and at least organize a meeting.

Besides the former ADSS property, we now also have the Gill school property. Not nearly as attractive nor as large, but a distant second choice should we fumble the ADSS ball. Both properties have significant green space and multiple entry options. And, of course, both properties require that the school district get on side.

Movers and shakers, let’s see some moving and shaking!

Wouldn’t community thinking people want to insure that at least one of these properties be developed for the growing long term care needs of this area?

This is a chance for the School District to advocate for the community by approaching city and regional district personnel re: possible purchase rather than waiting for an outside developer to come calling.

It’s the type of proactive thinking I’m seeing at the city level under our new leadership.

The time for action is now.

The city is one step closer to fulfilling its Liquid Waste Management Plan thanks to a grant from Environment Canada.

“The Liquid Waste Management incorporates a lot of our sewage treatment plans for the future and decommission of the sewage plant is a step towards that,” city engineer Guy

Cicon told council at their Oct. 13 meeting.

The city is looking to decommission its current sewage lagoon due to a planned switch over to one acquired from Catalyst Paper in

2011 at a cost of $5.75 million.

The grant the city received came from the Environment Canada National Wetland Conservation Fund and totalled $164,030. The grant

As part of its grant obligation, Cicon said that the city will restore the land for wildlife in the area.

The sewage lagoon is located within the ecologically diverse Somass Estuary.

“We will decommission some of the dikes and let water come through for fish traffic.

The time line of the decommissioning will depend on when the city switches over to the former Catalyst lagoon.

“We have to establish the new lagoon before we can

dewater the existing lagoon,” Cicon said, adding that the agreement over where the new sewage outfall will go—a major stumbling block that Cicon was dealing with in 2015—is almost complete.

The city has up until March 31, 2018 to accept the grant money.

A dozen excited people gathered on the front lawn of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Visitors Centre on Tuesday

At the group’s core was Angel Magnussen of Port Alberni, whose desire to share her

Magnussen, who shares a love of cats with DeGeneres, had made the TV star a blanket last year and sent it to Hollywood, but never received a response. Hargrove, a marathon runner from Cold Lake, AB and a friend of Magnussen’s, decided the only thing to do would be to run the blanket to DeGeneres.

Unfortunately, the TV star was a no-show when Hargrove and Felker arrived.

“I didn’t want to leave the blanket in an area where gifts were given and just dropped off,” he said.

“I brought the blanket back with me because we’re going to share the blanket with schools, we’re going to share it with people, and we’re going to share our story and Angel’s story,” he said.

When Hargrove jumped out of the van wearing a bright yellow banana suit, the young woman trotted across the lawn to wrap him in a big hug.

“This is the best night of my life,” she said once everyone arrived at her Hugginz sewing studio.

The Men’s Club officially came to a close on Sunday at Alberni Golf Club.

After a great year of golf under the direction of Club Captain Preben Rasmussen, the season ended with a four-man scramble.

This wasn’t your runof-the-mill scramble; it was played on an altered course, which made for some very interesting holes— especially when an extra hole was added to make it a 19-hole

round.

The teams were computer picked with the shotgun start at 9 a.m.

After golf there were a few announcements, One of which I am happy to inform everyone that Rasmussen will continue on as club captain for the upcoming year, along with his trusty sidekick Cal Davies.

The prize presentation started about 1:30 p.m., with the foursome of Jim Proteau, Ron Barker, Jim Petersen and George DeFrane emerging as the winners.

In second place were Craig Acland, Steve White, Al Wright and Wolf Suhr. Council is now accepting applications from residents of the City of Port Alberni interested in volunteering their time to assist in the review process for the City of Port Alberni’s Community Investment Program (CIP). Appointments will be for a three year term.

This Committee reviews grant applications from not-for-profit community service, multicultural, and recreation/amateur sport organizations, based on the priorities established by City Council. The Committee also reviews and makes recommendations with respect to permissive tax exemption applications from eligible organizations on an annual basis.

It is with great sadness the family of David Houghton announce his passing on October 19, 2015.

Dave passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Dave enjoyed many years of fishing and camping. He was always quick to laugh and adored his children and many grandchildren.

Dave is survived by his loving Wife Norah of over 18 years, his kindred spirit.

Dave is also survived by his daughters Jody and Brandy (Ben) & stepsons Steve and Dan. His sisters Colleen (Dan) and Heather (Tom) as well as his brother Dale (Joan). His grandchildren Emily, Raelyn, Riley, Bryden and Alisha as well as many nieces and nephews.

WILLIAM JOHN ANDREWS (BILL) July 14, 1938 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; October 18, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Brother and friend Bill Andrews.

Predeceased by his parents Milton and Stella Andrews; his brother-in-law Jim Finnie (2008), wife Irene (2008) after 47 years of marriage, and 21-year-old grandson Bryan Mason (2011).

He will be greatly missed by his daughter Donna (John) Douglas, son David Andrews, grandson Brad Mason, and step granddaughters Charlie and Georgia.

He will also be greatly missed by his sisters June (Bud) Pedersen, Dorothy Aston, Margaret (Ray) Miller, and his brother Charles (Coreen) Andrews; his many nieces and nephews, his many dear friends, as well as his partner and close companion Bev Hintz.

Bill was born in Clute, Northern Ontario, lived in Norwood until the age of eight years, when his family moved out to Port Alberni, BC. Bill graduated from ADHS in 1947, and was a member of the Chieftans basketball team, which won the very first Totem Tournament (Bill was the MVP). Bill also broke a high school record running the one mile race.

Bill loved his sports as a player, coach, and spectator. He played for the Alberni Athletics Baseball team, recreational hockey, and of course basketball, winning the â&#x20AC;&#x153;most sportsmanlikeâ&#x20AC;? trophy many times. He was a strong supporter of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, and he never missed his grandson Bryanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hockey games and tournaments. Bill was a very involved member of the Alberni Athletic Association for over sixty years.

Bill worked at the Paper Mill for 41 years as a tester, inspector, and then in programming until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed a wonderful life with family and friends. His summers were spent fishing on Bells Bay at Franklin River, and swimming in Sproat Lake. He had a great time traveling abroad and on road trips throughout Canada and the USA.

Michael PEARSON July 31, 1957 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; October 9, 2015 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mike, an incredible husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Our sweet man passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, October 9th, 2015 at Ty Watson House in Port Alberni. He left us too soon after a courageous ten-year struggle against cancer.

He lived a loving, colourful and musical life, bringing joy and encouragement to all who knew him. How blessed we are to have had him in our lives. We will miss his strong, warm hugs and his gorgeous smile. He was the definition of patience, kindness and love, and we will all carry that love with us in our hearts forever.

Mike was born July 31st, 1957 in Nanaimo, B.C. to Mabel Eileen Pearson and Clifford Albert Pearson. He graduated from NDSS in 1975, and in 1979 he moved to Port Alberni with his soulmate and soon-to-be wife Louise. Here he began to work for Canada Safeway and was an invaluable support to Louise and Carolyn as they established Finishing Touches together in the Alberni Valley.

An avid artist, Mike played guitar and sang in many bands throughout his youth and early adult life, including Nullis Secundus, Sassy, Main Street and Rekless. Since then he played guitar with Harbour City Big Band and also sang in Timbre! for several years which he absolutely adored.

Attending the Hornby Island Blues Workshop every May was the highlight of Mikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s year. He was also well known for his photography, design and drawing skills including his Caricatures, highly-sought in the Valley and beyond for years.

On August 21st, 1982, Mike married the love of his life, Louise.

Together they shared a radiant love that will never cease.

They went on to have three beautiful daughters who were his entire world.

Mike is survived by wife, Louise; daughters, Larissa (Peter) Richards, Bryanna and Diana; parents, Mabel and Cliff; siblings, Neale (Denise) , and Heather (Don); brothers-in-law Bob (Cora) and Chris (Janet) and sister-in-law June; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and devoted friends, all of whom have been a tremendous help and comfort in his last months of life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 7th, 2015 at Jericho Road Church, 5100 Tebo Ave, Port Alberni, with Pastor John Cox officiating.

Everyone is welcome. Mike has requested a tie dye dress code, so please wear it if you have it (or something bright as an alternative).

Many thanks to oncologist Dr. Jason Hart without whom Mike may not have had ten extra years of health with his family. Also to Royal Jubilee Hospital and West Coast General Hospital. Collectively, these methods greatly reduce forest fuels, ensure there are spaces for planting the future forest, and provide additional beneďŹ ts to the community.

The burning portion of our hazard abatement program is regulated and permitted by government. Island Timberlands plans to start these activities in the coming weeks. This will only be carried out when weather and venting indices are favourable and will be conducted by experienced workers under controlled conditions.

“Still Moving” is the title of our current art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre. This exhibit will showcase the works of Meaghan Stouck and Marilyn Ridsdale. Stop by the gallery Saturday, Oct. 24 from 1-3 p.m. for some refreshments and a chance to meet these wonderful artists.

Halloween at Rollin

Halloween is the perfect day to spend at the Rollin Art Centre. This family friendly event begins at 11 a.m. outside on the terrace, where you will pick a pumpkin and begin carving. It’s $5 per pumpkin.

If you can’t make the day of carving, you can take it home to carve but don’t forget to bring it back for the light up and possibly win a prize and ribbon in your age group.

Starting at 4 p.m. the gardens will be a maze of brightly lit jack-o-lanterns. Vote as many times as you like for your favourite carved pumpkin.
