NDP Murray Rankin wins Victoria riding Pamela Roth Victoria News

The momentum of the Green Party’s win in the Saanich-Gulf Islands couldn’t spread into Victoria.

NDP incumbent Murray Rankin managed to hang on for another term, taking an early lead as the results started rolling in Monday night.

By the time 50 of the 253 polls were reporting, Rankin had claimed 9,612 votes and Roberts had 6,722.

That number grew to 15,525 votes for Rankin and 11,343 votes for Roberts when 100 polls were reporting.

At press time, Rankin had 18,978 votes and Roberts had 14,663.

As the numbers continued to roll in, Rankin said he was delighted with the results and wasn’t surprised that Canadians had rejected Stephen Harper since that’s what he’s heard doorknocking in his riding.

In the end, the Liberals claimed a majority government, with the Conservatives

forming the official opposition. The NDP, however, took several losses.

“People voted massively for change.

I guess in Victoria I’m proud that I was the vehicle for that change,” said Rankin, who was disappointed with the NDP’s overall results.

“Obviously I was hoping for a different result for the NDP, but I am delighted that people have decided that it’s time for getting rid of Stephen Harper’s vision of Canada.”

First elected in 2012 during a bi-election, Rankin is one of Canada’s top lawyers and has been a vocal critic of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. He has served as the NDP’s health critic, critic for pensions and for national revenue, and led the NDP’s national campaign for CPP expansion.

During his next term, Rankin said he wants to take action for the citizens of Victoria on key issues such as a child care, climate change and a stable medical system.

“Things of that sort are really critical in this community and elsewhere. I’m going to keep fighting for those things,” he said, adding the work of taking down 2,000 election signs has now begun.

After a few days off, he plans to head back to Ottawa.

“I believe that people should be very proud of what Tom Mulcair and the NDP have contributed to

the last parliament. I hope we can continue to play a strong role in the next parliament as well.”

Over at the Victoria Conference Centre, the results weren’t exactly what Roberts was hoping for.

Roberts believes the Green Party did change the conversation in the campaign and hopes the new Liberal government will

progress on some of the issues the party brought to light.

Without more Green Party members in parliament, however, Roberts said it’s hard to push the environmental agenda and proportional representation — things Victorians wanted.

“The Green element is going to be missing.

Elizabeth (May) is an amazing champion.

She needed some help,” Roberts said.

“I’m not sorry I did this. I actually believe that we have changed the conversation in the country and here on the Island.”

Roberts, a veteran journalist for 37 years, is best known as the host of the arts and current affairs program, All Points West on CBC Radio One in Victoria.

She left her job to

speak out about the government’s current vision for Canada. One of the best ways to part of the discussion, she said, is to run as a candidate.

The Victoria riding has a population of 110,942, with 92,574 electors on the list. Conservative candidate John Rizzuti finished a distant third with 5,342 votes at press time. editor@vicnews.com

ainting may be his passion, but Glen Smethurst didn’t always do what he loved for a living.

Up until last September, Smethurst – the managing director of Van Isle Paint – served as the chief marketing officer for Campus Support, Canada’s largest education company. He excelled at sales and marketing, and that translated to high pay and social status.

But despite his success in the corporate world, he felt something was missing from his life.

“I just looked at these people and I couldn’t do it anymore,” he recalled. “The money was good, but there was just no destiny. I only saw things going backwards.”

He left Campus Support to help set up the IPO and marketing of a publicly traded operating and investment company. He was offered a lateral salary and shares in the company, but again, something was missing.

“Everything that most people chase in life I had to just let go,” he said. “What my brother had was real, and I just wanted to be a part of something real again.”

“There were certain things that I just noticed that were very corporate and very cookie cutter to the last enterprise that I was in,” he said. “There were just some core values that I wasn’t aligning with.”

Then, his brother, Clint Kennedy – a foreman for some of the larger painting companies in Victoria – called with an opportunity that ultimately pulled him out of the corporate rat race. He had a business plan for his own painting company, but he needed support to get it off the ground.

“It took me about three months but Clint’s vision was the only thing that, in the core of me, I could align with,” said Smethurst.

And, unlike the disconnect between executives and their clientele, Smethurst has been able to work with their customers one on one to determine, meet and exceed their painting needs.

“Of all these big deals, this small idea that Clint’s got in Victoria made the most sense to me. It was the most accurate, it was the most value-based, it had the most integrity to it.”

Van Isle Paint takes a different approach to their industry: they rarely take deposits, they don’t collect until usually three to five days after a job has been finished, and they are often more affordable than their competitors.

“In Fairfield, we did a dormer job there. The lowest quote was $12,000 – ours was $2,583,” said Smethurst. “It’s very much an unregulated market and it’s kind of a free-for-all.”

“When you’re dealing with this type of population, they’re very trustworthy people. We just want to make sure this market is respected.”

“As a small business owner, the one thing Clint and I sort of kick ourselves in the rear end on is why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Van Isle Paint has a team of 10 full-time employees and offers competitive wages and a benefits package for painters and foremen, with yearly reviews and room for advancement.

Smethurst said he and his brother do what they can to give back to their constituents and ensure they enjoy their jobs.

“I look at what I’ve done in one year with my brother. We’ve been able to instill the values, we’re training these guys, I believe we’re making people better because of the example we’re able to lead by,” said Smethurst. “We are making a difference in people’s lives.”

After a neck-in-neck race, NDP incumbent Randall Garrison has been re-elected to represent residents in the riding of Esquimalt-SaanichSooke.

Garrison was declared the winner after receiving more than 13,000 votes — the most he’s ever received — Tuesday night to serve the newly formed riding.

But the win was bittersweet for the NDPer, admitting he hoped the party would win more votes across the country.

“I’m feeling great about this, but as I said it’s a bittersweet moment. We’ve done very well on Vancouver Island but I wish we had done better across the country. But we have removed the Stephen Harper government and we can get back to work making a better Canada,” said Garrison from his election party at the Esquimalt Royal Legion.

It was a tight race in the evening as Liberal candidate David Merner held an early

lead. At one point, Merner came within 50 votes of overtaking Garrison. But Garrison, who was the MP for the former Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca riding, held on — pulling ahead with more than 35 per cent of the vote.

Merner was disappointed with the loss, but said a Liberal

“There’s a huge red wave that is coming across the country, so everybody is really excited.

The fact that we didn’t win in this riding is a small part of a much bigger picture,” he said.

Now, Garrison will set his sights on fulfilling some unfinished businesses in parliament, including bringing ship building jobs to the riding.

“They were promised by the

Conservatives, they were two years late. I want to make sure by next year we have people working on those ships,” Garrison said. “I’m focused on rebuilding Canada than the NDP. Right now, we have a lot of work to do to restore the damage that was done to things like Canada’s international reputation, to support for veterans, to support for First Nations.”

Also on his checklist — creating an action plan to save the southern resident killer whales, a private members bill to protect transgender rights and see the repeal of the antiterrorism Bill C-51.

At press time, Conservative candidate Shari Lukens had 17 per cent of votes, followed by Green Party candidate Frances Litman with 20 per cent.

Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke is a new riding and shares territory with the old Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca riding. It stretches from Saanich to Jordan River, and includes Esquimalt, Sooke, View Royal, Colwood and Metchosin. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

New float-plane terminal set to arrive in March Pamela Roth Victoria News

It’s been five years in the making, but a new float-plane terminal for Victoria’s Inner Harbour should be in place by March.

The 6,000-square foot $4-million facility is currently being constructed in Cowichan Bay. When complete, the terminal will have a modern and rustic design that will include a full customs area complete with a jail and interrogation room — floating on top of the water.

“A floating sea plane terminal will be a signature building in the Inner Harbour,” said Randy Wright,

senior vice-president of Harbour Air. “I think the one thing that I’m excited about is there will be nothing like it in the world.”

According to Wright, the current facility, located on lower Wharf Street, uses Atco trailers that were originally flown in 50 years ago. The trailers were renovated four years ago and will be demolished once the new terminal is in place.

A new public plaza will replace the existing terminal site as part of the signing of a new long-term lease between the City of Victoria and float-plane operators.

In April 2013, the

city approved the design of the floating terminal building, docks and plaza. The plaza will feature a green space, benches, bike racks, trees and room to accommodate passenger pick up and drop off.

A floating terminal means the facility can be moved should things change in the harbour. All operators would have to do is pull the piles, anchors and docks.

On Thanksgiving Monday, Wright and the owner of Kenmore Air (part of the Victoria Float Plane Terminal Ltd.) saw the progress being made on the new terminal. Wright knows the logistics

of clearing out the old docks, boats and buildings to move in the new terminal will be a challenging job, but it’s one he’s looking forward to.

“We’ve gone through the plan several times on how we’re going to execute this,” he said.

“I’m very excited for Victoria. We’re going to have a world class floating sea terminal.

I think we’re going to execute this and my hope is that Victoria will be very proud of it.”

Four years ago, Nicole Smith was on a business trip in Paris and met up with her best friend. There were no husbands or children, just the two friends together in Paris, marking a rare occasion.

The two friends wanted great photos to remember the special trip for years to come, but were disappointed at the end of the day with the awkward floating head selfies or blurry photos taken by strangers.

A friend of Smith’s friend met up with the pair the next day and snapped photos of them for 20 minutes with an iPhone. When Smith looked at the pictures she had goosebumps.

“She really chronicled the spirit of my trip in a way that selfies or awkward stranger shots never could,” said the 43-year-old. “To me, that was the best souvenir I could bring home.”

The trip sparked an idea that has now become Smith’s livelihood, and one that generated a phone call out-of-the-blue from CBC’s Dragons’ Den — a reality show where aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their business concepts and products to a panel of Canadian business moguls who have the cash and the

“We see photos every day coming in from all over the world. Whether it be surprise proposals or 50th anniversaries or family reunions or an adventurous solo trip, it’s all these amazing moments in these

Working full-time for Microsoft at the time, Smith launched her business, Flytographer, two years ago from her home office in Oak Bay. The business connects travellers with local photographers in their region for quick, candid photo shoots, resulting in wall-worthy photos of everyone together.

Today, Smith has a team of six full-time and two part-time employees working in a downtown Victoria office. She also works with more than 300 photographers in 160 cities worldwide.

When looking for a photographer in faroff destinations, Smith typically connects with local wedding photographers, interviewing them on Skype and doing

people’s lives when they are travelling to all these beautiful destinations. To be part of these moments, it’s a joy.”

Smith knew she was onto something big, but never expected to receive a phone call from the producers of Dragons’ Den. Seeing it as a great opportunity to get in front of Canadians and meet powerful business moguls, Smith and her oldest son flew to Toronto last May to make their pitch to the dragons, who are known to be ruthless given their own personal money is on the line.

The episode will air on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Until then, Smith is not allowed to talk about the outcome of her pitch, but said the experience was

This election had many people fired up By the time you read this, another federal election will have passed and the leader of Canada will be celebrating a victory. The election signs will soon come down and commercials blasting various political parties will no longer be blaring from your TV. But compared to the last federal election held in 2011, this one seemed to get people talking.

Leading up to the days we headed to the polls, it was interesting to see the opinions formed on social media sites. Some were very strong, sparking intense debates between clashing party supporters. Others were voicing their opinion about federal politics for the first time, or taking pictures of themselves voting at advance polls.

Suddenly, everyone seemed to care.

After the third longest campaign in history (78 days), we are all no doubt sick of hearing about the election. The only two campaigns that were longer took place in 1867 at 81 days and 1872 at 96 days. Those were the days, however, when voting took several months to complete.

Aside from the lengthy campaign, this year’s election was also different in that it began with the three major parties tied. Seventy-eight days later there had been some change, but not enough for the pollsters to declare a clear winner.

This campaign seemed to fire up many people who normally don’t pay attention to politics. Last year, a friend of mine didn’t even know who Justin Trudeau was. Today, she posted a Vote Compass to her Facebook page.

It’s great to see so many people caring about their country and helping to determine who should be prime minister. Hopefully this kind of enthusiasm lasts into future elections.

The TPP doesn’t change B.C.’s dependency on the United States. As with NAFTA, our vital lumber trade remains under a separate agreement, which expired on Oct. 1.

I’m told by federal and provincial officials that at this stage, the U.S. isn’t even taking our calls on the softwood lumber agreement, which Canada and B.C. want extended. Americans are preoccupied with the TPP and domestic politics.

After decades of bitter legal actions from the American industry, the latest softwood deal has provided a rough peace. It set a floor price for B.C.’s allegedly subsidized lumber exports, with an export tax collected by Canada when the price went below the floor of $355 per thousand board feet. That money went back into our government general revenue.

Higher prices meant no export tax was collected through 2014 and early 2015, and only five per cent as of September. Now that the agreement is expired, by default we have actual free trade in lumber for up to the next year.

Theatre company acts as fundraiser for various organizations Pamela Roth Victoria News

After 40 years of experience in the arts, Zelda Dean wanted to use her passion for theatre to make a difference in her community.

Thus, the idea for Bema Productions was born.

Officially formed last year, the local theatre company is based out of Victoria’s downtown synagogue, but takes its plays to various venues throughout the city as a fundraiser for organizations such as local churches, Silver Threads (a senior’s organization) and the Help Fill a Dream Foundation.

Although the theatre company is

still relatively new, so far the concept has been a big hit. “This year I was blown away. I had to stop the requests after 10,� said Dean, adding the company’s only request is that the cost of getting to a venue is covered. Aside from playwrights’ royalties, all proceeds from ticket sales go to the organization hosting the play. “Just so many organizations are raising money from our play, which I think is really neat. I am so grateful that this is all working and it excites me that a lot of people who otherwise might not be working together, are.�

Although the theatre company is based out

of the Congregation Emanu-El, Dean said it isn’t a jewish theatre company or religious group, therefore everyone is welcome. Everything they do however, has some sort of a Jewish connection, whether it be the playwright or a character in a play.

So far, Bema Productions (Bema refers to the altar in a synagogue) has done two plays and made its big debut with the fictional tale based on personal interviews, 17 Stories by playwright Caroline Russell-King.

The Grandkid, a two-man comedy by John Lazarus, will be the company’s third show. The play follows an elderly man and his granddaughter,

and touches on many contemporary issues that people of all ages have to deal with, such as sex, politics, religion and heart attacks. “There’s this wonderful interplay between these characters even though there’s a 50-year separation,�

said Dean, adding the play has a local connection, with the grand daughter being a University of Victoria student. “You get very caught up in the dialogue because it’s so real. There are many laughs and many poignant moments as well.�

Dean, the artistic director of Bema Productions, plans on doing three shows a year. The next one will be held in March, and will be a sing-a-long version of Fiddler On the Roof with actors doing a staged reading and a live orchestra.

The Grandkid runs from Oct. 24 to Nov.

1 at the Congregation Emanu-El. The entire cast and crew will then move on to performance spaces in six churches, a retirement residence and funeral chapel.

Rocky Horror Show makes debut Jennifer Blyth Black Press

You might say that if it weren’t for Oak Bay’s Canadian College of Performing Arts, locals might not be able to enjoy this Halloween’s stage production of that camp-theatre favourite, the Rocky Horror Show.

Mounted for the second year by Rebel Knock Out Productions (RKO), three of the four founding members of RKO attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) in Oak Bay. “You could definitely say that RKO wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the wonderful connections we all made at the CCPA, tucked right into Oak Bay,” says founding member of RKO and the company’s marketing director, Candace Woodland, who’s performed in Kaleidoscope’s Rocky Horror production several years ago.

“I think to me it’s different from classic

musical theatre but it’s also the most inclusive show I’ve performed in with the relationship between the actors and the audience.”

A satirical play on the horror and science fiction “B-movies” of the mid-20th century, the story follows straight-laced sweethearts Brad Majors and Janet Weiss who find themselves stranded in the woods during a suspicious thunderstorm. With no choice but to ask for help at the terrifying Frankenstein Place, inside, they find a deliciously charming yet utterly unpredictable transvestite throwing a party for his unusual friends — and Brad and Janet are the guests of honour.

The story was also brought to the big screen in fine form by actors Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick in the 1975 cult classic, the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

RKO came together

last year specifically to mount the production.

Greeted by sold-out crowds, the crew decided to return this year with an all-star cast of 15 local actors and an expanded run at the Metro Theatre, opening next week under the direction of Atomic Vaudeville’s Britt Small.

“Britt is really good and pushing us to what

we can do with the characters,” Woodland says, noting that in her case, playing Columbia — “a role I never thought I could play” — has been a departure from many of the classic or dramatic roles she had tackled previously.

From the outside, the province’s mobile medical unit simply looks like a white truck. But stepping inside is like entering another world.

The interior of the 16-metre, 1,000-square foot tractor-trailer looks like the emergency room of a hospital.

There are stretchers, medical supplies, monitors, portable X-ray machines, ultrasounds and crash carts.

With five full-time staff, the unit is deployed to the regional health authorities in the province throughout the year to help support hospitals and health centres undergoing renovation, hosting outreach clinics and providing disaster training and education with site clinicians.

Its latest stop was Victoria General Hospital where they provided roughly 60 local clinicians with disaster training and trauma education.

It also stopped in Esquimalt, providing pediatrics, asthma and allergy care to the Songhees First Nations.

Alyshia Higgins, program manager for the mobile medical unit, said it’s flexible in the type of care it can provide during a deployment.

“We’ve really expanded the scope of our program.

Initially, the thought was that we would provide support for disasters and emergencies.

But we really can fulfill a variety of means,” she said, adding a few babies have been born in the unit when they were in Pemberton.

In 2012, the unit was deployed to its first emergency to provide care for up to eight patients when Surrey Memorial Hospital’s emergency room was flooded While the unit is outfitted for the rare disaster, Peter Hennecke, clinical operations director, said an important aspect has become education and outreach work.

“We’re like a catalyst for change. We’re working with the emergency health services, fire, bringing all these groups together for education that doesn’t always happen if you don’t have that catalyst,” he said.

The unit costs roughly $900,000 annually to operate with funding divided between Fraser, Interior, Northern and Vancouver Coastal health, as well as the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

A local kitchen that provides meals to lowincome seniors, single parents and street youth will be receiving a much-need renovation next year.

The Rainbow Kitchen has been selected by HeroWork, a community infrastructure renewal movement, to complete roughly $300,000 to $500,000 in renovations in 2016.

Renovations will include replacing the windows, flooring, doubling its electrical service, reconfiguring the kitchen and bathroom and potentially adding a walk-in freezer.

Paul Latour, founder and executive director of HeroWork, said the renovations will make the building more sustainable, lower the cost of the operation of the facility by cutting its electrical bill in half, and improve the workflow of the building so it’s more efficient and safe for volunteers.

“All of the thousands of people who come there will get really a lift up in spirits because the place will be beautiful and they'll know that their local community came together to make it happen,” Latour said.

The kitchen serves 36,000 meals a year to the poor and disenfranchised through the community kitchen at the Esquimalt United Church.

“We were ecstatic. It's kind of like winning the lottery or finding out you received a major grant,” said Jeffrey Dub-

ney, vice president of the Rainbow Kitchen Society. “We feel very fortunate that HeroWork has chosen us and that they're stepping up to the plate to help us with this major renovation and restoration of the facility.”

Roughly 20 other non-profit organizations who use the

building such as Girl Guides, a rowing club and Alcoholics Anonymous will benefit from the renovations as well.

Renovations will begin in late summer early fall in 2016.

It is also the setting of a new program called the community kitchen put on by the Mustard Seed.

The program teaches individuals recipes they can cook with the food provided in the roughly 5,000 hampers distributed monthly.

Hamper items include canned soups and beans, a meat item, bread, cereal, dairy, chocolate, fruits and vegetables.

The first community kitchen kicked off in the summer and was modelled after a similar program organized

by Cool-Aid Society’s downtown community centre.

Since then, there have been sessions on cooking with apples (where they made curry soup with apples, apple sauce and apple crisp), beans and canning with anywhere from a few to six people participating.

“Because we are a food secure building and a food bank, we not only want to offer them

the hampers that we do, but give them some skills and maybe introduce different spices that you can use to augment flavour, but also to augment health,” Pace said.

Raya-Jayne Peters has been living off the hampers for the past six months.

“I like being involved in anything in the community. I feel like I can contribute some of my knowledge and have fun with people while I'm doing it,” she said, adding the Mustard Seed has helped supplement her diet because of food allergies.

Lynn Orr, a long-time volunteer with the food bank and member of the church, said the program is long over due.

“A young girl or boy who may have left home at a young age might not know that carrot or tomato isn't bad. You can put it in a pot and make vegetable soup,” Orr said.

“I just feel like it's an old school mothers and aunts and everybody coming together and bonding over cooking a meal. I just see the people here coming and feeling very comfortable. We're all on the same level.”

Pace hopes to expand the program to host it every week.

CRD approves grant for Cottage Grove The Capital Regional District board of directors has approved the Regional Housing Trust Fund grant of $675,000 towards the Cottage Grove Manor 45-unit senior living development at 3211-3223 Quadra St. The project is led by the Victoria Cool-Aid Society and the B.C. Housing Management Commission.

Cool-Aid has been relying on the $675,000 as part of its budget for the project, which will shelter homeless and at-risk seniors.

The approval came at the same Oct. 14 board meeting that the CRD received the comprehensive Capital Region Housing Data Book and Gap Analysis.

The report is bursting with visual graphics that represent the household income required for shelter and how it relates to housing supply in the region.

“There is a growing demand for available and affordable housing for our elderly population,” said Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen, chair of the CRD board.

“Cottage Grove is an excellent example of organizations working together to provide residents the opportunity to continue to live independently.”

Cool-Aid has contributed $1 million, Victoria and Saanich are each contributing $112,000, and CMHC another $10,000.

Cool-Aid aims to charge $375 per month for the 45 units and cover the operating costs of the building.

Construction of the new facility is expected to begin before the end of the year and be completed within a year of commencement. editor@vicnews.com

Calendar program provides employment for homeless Kendra Wong Victoria News

There will be a familiar face outside the London Drugs on Yates Street for the next few months.

For the past four years, Craig has sat outside the building selling calendars that highlight homelessness — in which half of the proceeds from the sale go back into his pocket.

“There's human contact. It brings out my humour doing this,” said Craig, a low-income Victoria resident, who did not want to publish his last name.

The Hope in Shadows project originated in Vancouver in 2003 to challenge the stigma and stereotypes that existed about the Downtown Eastside.

Each year, the calendars feature photos taken by residents of the Downtown Eastside to share stories about their own community through their eyes.

Low-income or homeless people become vendors, purchase the calendars for $10, sell them for $20, and keep

the profit.

The project expanded to Victoria a few years ago with roughly a dozen people selling calendars on Fort Street, in the Cook Street Village and outside the Bay Centre.

Vendors also sell Megaphone, a monthly magazine, for $2.

This year's calendar, which launched last week, is a look back on the 12 years of the project's history and how it has helped raise awareness about poverty, addiction and homelessness around the province.

Craig suffers from multiple-sclerosis. The program is his only source of income from October to January. In the past, he's sold more than 60 calendars.

“It gives me a good way to get out and meet new people,” said Craig, who sells the calendars from from roughly 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday.

“I just want to bring

awareness about the homeless issue that is a major problem and let people know that we are advocates for them.

That's why we do what we do.”

Jessica Hannon, project lead for Megaphone's Hope in Shadows project, said it has been successful in Victoria, adding not only does it provide employment but it also gives vendors a sense of purpose.

“People can feel isolated, can feel like they don't have something to contribute and what we see with people participating in the Megaphone and Hope in Shadows vendor program is that this is meaningful work for people,” she said. “It's a way for them to feel connected to the community and they are contributing something that's worthwhile.”

skating gear into their bags, loads the car and heads to their 6:30 a.m. speed skating practice at the Archie Browning Arena in Esquimalt.

After the hour-long practice is over, they pile into the car again and head to their home in Metchosin. It is routine for the family of four — Chris, Jane and their two children Morgan, 13, and Catriona, 11, who also practice on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The sport has become a family affair (they are known as the Von Trapp family of skaters) since joining the Esquimalt Speed Skating Club two years ago.

After a couple of free practices, they decided to come as a family.

Unlike some sports where parents drive their children and sit in the bleachers and watch, Chris and Jane were looking for sports in which the entire family could participate.

Erin Attwell started her championships winning gold in the team sprint with teammate Sarah Van Dam. The two then paired with B.C. teammates Maggie Coles-Lyster (Local Ride) and Margaret Ovendell (Escape Velocity-Devo) to take silver in the team pursuit. Attwell won bronze in the Omnium, winning the time trial event and finishing second in the individual

pursuit. She also won silver in the national sprint event. Van Dam, also riding up a category due to her young age of 14, finished 6th overall in the Omnium, winning third in the time trial and fourth in the points race.

According to Ian Phillips, president of the club, speed skating is taken up by many local families as a way to spend time together.

“There's very few sports where the entire family can participate,” he said. “With speed skating, the mom, dad and kids can come out and do

their thing. It has that aspect that a lot of other sports don't have.”

The Esquimalt Speed Skating Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season and are looking for new members. The first few practices are free for people thinking about joining. For more information call Phillips at 250-474-1491.
