Liberal candidate Krayenhoff, who came into the CowichanMalahat-Langford race at the last moment following the resignation of Maria Manna, gave kudos to winner MacGregor of the NDP. Krayenhoff noted, however, the Liberals made an impact in a short time.

“The Liberals have made a strong showing in this riding,” he said. “We’ve got everything to be proud of.”

Of his party’s national accomplishment, Krayenhoff added, “We had no idea it would be such a strong success. We’re just over the moon.”

Green Party candidate HuntJinnouchi felt good about her own campaign and the people she was able to reach.

“I actually feel very proud of my team and how they were able to mobilize and get out our message of hope and standing up

for the environment in a way that got people listening and starting to get involved,” she said. “My canvassing coordinator is only 18. I had people on my team that had never voted before. It was inspiring to see what we did accomplish.”

Nationally the party’s results were disappointing, she added.

“It’s very disappointing because we are at such a crucial time in Canadian history, to bring a Green perspective and voice to making decisions that are going to impact our future,” HuntJinnouchi said.

Flu shots now available for coming season Each year inuenza causes more deaths than any other vaccine-preventable illness in Canada.

As u season approaches, Island Health is encouraging all residents to plan ahead and get their u shot early.

The Lake Cowichan Public Health Unit and I.D.A. Pharmacy will be offering u shot clinics in the community.

“Planning ahead and getting your u shot early is an important

way to protect yourself and the people in your life who are vulnerable to complications of inuenza,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano medical health ofcer for Island Health.

Free adult drop-in clinics will be held at Lake Cowichan Public Health Unit Friday Nov. 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 am and Monday Nov. 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Families with children are asked to phone for an

appointment at 250749-6878.

I.D.A Pharmacy in Lake Cowichan is also offering u clinics starting today Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Free u shots are available for the following people from a health unit, doctor or pharmacy: • People 65 and older and their caregivers • Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household

contacts • Health care workers • Emergency responders • Healthy children from 6 months of age to less than 5 years • Household contacts and caregivers of children from birth to less than 5 years of age • Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities

Postponed pole raising Rod’s

The eagerly anticipated raising of a totem pole in Ts'uubaa-asatx Square has been set for Saturday Nov 14. An earlier to plan to erect the pole in September was postponed because the cement foundation was not adequately set and cured.

The totem pole is the rst the Ts'uubaaasatx First Nation has raised.

"We hope it will serve as a catalyst for a new interest in knowing who the local rst nation is," says Aaron Hamilton, operations manager for Lake Cowichan First Nation. "This is a gesture back to the community, who have named this beautiful square in the middle of town in our name.

It is only right to give something back."

The 20-foot pole was designed and carved by artist Ron Hamilton from a cedar log donated by Western Forest Products out of Port Alberni.

He was assisted by Ray Simms and Mark Mickey. The carving was completed in August. The pole has been safely stored in a

secret location in the community awaiting it's unveiling in the square.

More than twothirds of the funds needed for the totem pole project has been raised through donations from the community, local businesses and organizations, says Hamilton.

"We are very encouraged to see that happening, to have the support."

The ceremony is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday Nov. 14 at Ts'uubaa-asatx Square, rain or shine.

Celebrations will include traditional song and dance that band members have been learning for the past few months.

"We have learned some songs," says Hamilton. "Its like we are saying 'here we are!' We had lost it [songs and dances] all but now we are learning them again."

The raising of the pole will be done in quarters, with members of the forest industry, RCMP, reghters and rst responders, band members and local youth all taking part in pulling the pole into position.

"The carver was adamant that we erect the pole by hand rather than machine," says Hamilton. "It symbolizes us all

pulling together as a community. It is for the community and it takes a community to accomplish something like this.

Now the real work begins for elected officials

Stephen Harper said it, and his campaign organizers tried very hard to reinforce the idea this election was not about him.

In the end it was.

For many reasons, Canadians wanted change at the top. On Monday night, they got it.

When the Conservative Party of Canada shot to prominence, nally gaining a majority in 2011, they did so promising change after years of scandal under the Chretien Liberal regime. Harper promised Canadians not only that he would clean up Ottawa, but provide transparency and accountability.

We got anything but and voters have expressed their anger at being so egregiously betrayed. There’s Mike Duffy, the unprecedented concentration of power in the Prime Minister’s Ofce, Canada’s hard-earned international reputation is in tatters and despite many promises there has been no shift in decit spending.

Harper himself, everyone agrees, is a skilled politician — perhaps too skilled. His political savvy, whether correct or not, has been interpreted by Canadians as seeking more power over the good of Canada and what is best for Canadians.

The armour in which he and the CPC clad itself ended up being its fatal aw.

Their ideology became cumbersome and politics out of touch — some might say arrogant.

Cowichan-Malahat-Langford has voted to send NDP candidate Alistair MacGregor to go to Ottawa.

No surprise there, since he worked so closely with his popular predecessor Jean Crowder.

For the MP-elect, the work is just beginning. The interests of his new constituents are not a few: log export, watershed management and First Nations treaty negotiations are just a few matters he must bring to Parliament. Voters in the riding are comfortable with an opposition MP. In the end, the outcome should not come as a giant surprise. As the too-long campaign unfolded, there was a growing sense that Harper does not always represent traditional Canadian values of courtesy, inclusiveness and caring.

So, no matter how much Harper insisted it was not about him and CPC strategists tried to deect voters away from the perception that he has a controlling and inexible nature, Canadians were not convinced.

There will now be serious soul searching in the Conservative Party.

New Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau (good hair and all) – with his passionate defence of his father, his sticking up for journalism and overall sense of approachability —offered a perception of warmth that was absent from the other leaders.

How those qualities translate into on-the-job performance remain to be seen. But Canadians spoke loudly in the best way possible — with their votes.

Thankful for volunteer efforts To the editor, This past week was Homeless Action week and on Thursday, October 15th, along with many other volunteers, I had the great pleasure of helping serve lunch to many in need in the Cowichan Valley at the Duncan United Church.

From the rst strains of the welcoming songs from the Cowichan Valley First Nations to the thank you for support from Joy Emmanuel, Regional Affordable Housing Coordinator, and the nal pot scrubbing, it was evident that this day was special to all.

The church hall and back room were chockablock with clothing, bedding, toys and personal products for men, women and children and the side room was beautifully set with tables and chairs for the enjoyment of a hot lunch.

Several groups such as the Salvation Army,

Women Against Violence Against Women, the Cowichan Valley Arthritis Society and many more were in attendance with lots of pertinent information and give-aways for everyone.

Valley businesses provided chicken vegetable soup, vegetarian chili, bread, buns, cookies, sweets and fruit in abundance. There was very little left at the end of the day.

Volunteers from all walks of life appreciated this very special community event as did the recipients.

I also want to send kudos to the Lake Auxilliary to the Cowichan District Hospital for their fabulous wine and cheese and fashion show on October 3rd to raise funds for the hospital maternity ward. continued on page 5

Cemetery tour a historic experience To the editor, Today, I had a wonderful opportunity to go on a tour of St. Peter’s Cemetery in Duncan. It was a great turn out and there was so much interesting history of Duncan and its former locals. It makes me wonder,why we don’t have a cemetery in Lake Cowichan? I know we have a lot of interesting history, and we can look it up in the library, town ofce, and the museum. But it’s such a shame that we don’t have a cemetery to tell its own story. Everyone is trying to make an effort to improve this town. But cemetery can tell so much about the history of a town.

But I feel that we are losing our history because we don’t have one. It’s a shame that we can’t regularly spend time and visit our loved ones. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a huge expense.

Our locals could form a group to help take care of it. I would be happy to sign up. Is there any way we could make this happen?

Lastly, we should all be very proud of our wonderful Kaatza Historical Museum. The celebration of the 40th anniversary and dinner on Saturday October 17th was well attended by locals and out-of-towners. Tommy Douglas even showed up!

Wilmer Gold photos ashed on the screen all evening and the museum staff developed a 40 year history video which brought back many wonderful memories to those in attendance.

Several volunteers and local businesses were honoured for their work and support of our history and for donations to the much-needed museum addition.

I truly feel blessed to live in such a diverse community of wonderful volunteers and caring people that help to make our area so special.

VICTORIA – As the dust settles from Monday’s federal election, to paraphrase former prime minister Kim Campbell, it’s time to talk about serious issues again.

The Conservatives were hoping to make 2015 a free trade election, by signing onto the world’s largest trade deal at the end of July. But things didn’t go as planned at the talks in Maui, and Canada was among the players that walked away from the Trans-Pacic Partnership table at that time.

Then came ve days of round-theclock negotiations in Atlanta, with the U.S. pushing for a deal with Japan,

Korea, Australia and other Pacic Rim powerhouses to normalize trade in 40 per cent of the world’s economy. And the TPP came together at the end of September.

Canada and B.C. essentially got what our governments were demanding, which was broad access to Pacic Rim markets and continued protection for nearly all of domestic dairy, poultry and egg markets. Also preserved was B.C.’s regulated market for logs and U.S. lumber sales.

The 200-kg gorilla of the TPP burst out in the heat of the election campaign, and the Kim Campbell rule was demonstrated again. Much of the discussion revolved around alleged secrecy, as the legal text of the deal won’t be out for some time to come. Protected farmers downed their

Within days of the TPP deal, the World Bank issued one of its periodic reports on “extreme poverty,” which it denes as an income of less than $1.90 U.S. a day. And 2015 is the rst year when fewer than 10 per cent of the world’s people remain below this global poverty line, down from 12.8 per cent in 2012.

It’s easy for comfortable First World folks to protest conditions in running shoe and cell phone factories in India or China, but the graph of extreme poverty in those countries shows steep decline since 1990. Trade and technology are lifting up the poorest of the world.

For B.C., withdrawing from Pacic Rim trade is unthinkable. We worry

a lot about lumber and copper and natural gas, but the TPP also opens up huge markets for services, where much of our economic future awaits.

The question for us is simple. Can we compete in health sciences, engineering, architecture, digital media, and information technology? Do we want to?

The TPP doesn’t change B.C.’s dependency on the United States. As with NAFTA, our vital lumber trade remains under a separate agreement, which expired on Oct. 1.

I’m told by federal and provincial ofcials that at this stage, the U.S. isn’t even taking our calls on the softwood lumber agreement, which Canada and B.C. want extended. Americans are preoccupied with the TPP and domestic politics.

After decades of bitter legal actions from the American industry, the latest softwood deal has provided a rough peace.

It set a oor price for B.C.’s allegedly subsidized lumber exports, with an export tax collected

by Canada when the price went below the oor of $355 per thousand board feet.

That money went back into our government general revenue.

Higher prices meant no export tax was collected through 2014 and early 2015, and only ve per cent as of September. Now that the agreement is expired, by default we have actual free trade in lumber for up to the next year.

Hiking Goldstream Provincial Park Canyon Last week found the Retreads hiking the west side of the canyon in Goldstream Provincial Park. After a pleasant drive down we met up at the Visitor Centre and headed off along the trail passing under the highway via the Niagara Creek culvert which at this time of year is dry and offers a safe and convenient way to cross the highway. It took us a few minutes to nd the trail head but once found, we started the ascent of the hill and as we steadily climbed the noise of the busy highway slowly receded and was replaced by the quiet of the the forest.

The trail is well maintained with bridges crossing over creeks and stairs carved into the steeper sections.

This rst section of the trail features huge Cedar, Douglas Fir and Western Maple growing overhead on almost impossible vertical slopes with ferns at their base. The Maples were in their best fall colours, a bonus! A couple of new hikers joined us, one from Toronto and the

other from Mexico, and they were completely amazed by the size of the trees and beauty of the setting.

We stopped briey at Niagara Falls which at this time of year were not doing much “falling” but must be spectacular during the rainy season.

We reached the top of the ridge after 45 minutes of climbing, including quite a few rest breaks and set off southward down the Gold Mine Trail. The forest cover opens up at this point to contain lots of Arbutus trees

We headed home feeling tired but happy that we had “conquered the Hill” and looking forward to next week’s hike to Bald Mountain and the trail levels out but still has lots of ups and downs. A coffee break at the entrance to the mine (now blocked part way in) allowed the more intrepid of us to explore a real mine shaft and wonder at the toughness of the men who did this work.

Some of us, fresh from last weekend’s

lunch we were passed by another group of hikers of like vintage from Cordoba Bay going at a good clip.

They informed us that this hike of only 4 hours was considered by them a “spa hike” leaving some of us feeling a little humbled. We continued westward following

our speedy friends towards our ultimate destination of Goldstream Falls. These Falls were indeed falling and doing so picturesquely into a beautiful deep pool.

Our hike leader who has hiked this area many times assured us that the salmon that are seen spawning in the lower part of Goldstream do indeed make it this far up the stream.

Turning northward we found ourselves walking along the E & N Railway rightof-way. As this was pretty much a straightshot compared to the twists and turns of the trail it gave us all a good indication of how far we had actually traveled. We managed to quickly get into the habit of adjusting our step to match the spacing of the railway ties although in some spots the roadbed was almost so lled that it was more like a sidewalk. Judging from the rust on the tops of the rails we surmised that it has been a while since any wheel has rolled along them. It also provided us with a good sense of how much work would actually be involved in revitalizing this rail link to Victoria. We stopped on the south side of the huge rail trestle crossing Niagara Creek with some of us bravely venturing out to the half way point a trip not for the feint of heart nor those with vertigo However, we were rewarded with spectacular views eastward towards Mount Finalyson and Finlayson inlet. We slowly descended back down to the trailhead with the noise of the highway, now busy with the afternoon commuter trafc, steadily growing louder.

We headed home feeling tired but happy that we had “conquered the Hill” and looking forward to this week’s hike to Bald Mountain.

Walbran Valley one of last old growth forests The Walbran Valley is one of ve areas of predominant oldgrowth rainforest remaining on B.C.’s south coast, says the Sierra Club BC. A recent mapping analysis by Sierra Club examined 155 “landscape units” on Vancouver Island and the south coast, says a press release from the environmental group. Vancouver Island is home to four of the ve remaining old-growth landscape units with more than 70 percent old growth forest still intact. The Walbran Valley is the only one on the southern portion of Vancouver Island.

Located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in the area of Carmanah Pacic Park, about 60 percent of the Walbran Valley is protected under the park boundaries. The other 40 percent is vulnerable to logging, says Jens Wieting of

Sierra Club BC. The B.C. government recently awarded the rst of eight logging permits requested by Teal Jones for this unprotected part of the Walbran Valley adds Wieting, calling for a stop to logging in the area.

“We must protect increasingly rare old-growth and the Walbran Valley in particular—for species diversity, clean air, clean water, as an outdoor destination and as the world’s most efcient carbon sink.

At the same time, we can build a sustainable forest industry around productive second growth,” said Wieting.

Sierra Club BC’s mapping analysis also highlights the percentage of good and medium old-growth forest on the south coast.
