Loon Lake now full of rainbow trout FISHERIES: | Alberni Valley’s Loon Lake is one of 30 lakes stocked for anglers province-wide by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.

There’s a lot more under Loon Lake’s calm, greenish waters than meets the eye these days.

“We’re releasing 1,200 rainbow trout,” said Tony Andrychuk, a fish culturist with the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery.

“I’ve got them in two tanks here.”

It’s part of an effort by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC to stock lakes for anglers.

“We’re stocking 30 lakes this fall,” Andrychuk said.

“We raise the fish until they’re about a year old.”

The fish that the society uses for Vancouver Island lakes are hatchery bred; the rest of the

province gets wild stock. The service is fully funded by angler user fees.

“It’s fully funded by anglers now, when you buy a fishing licence it pays for all the stocking.”

The trout released into Loon Lake—a project that happens annually, according to Andrychuk—are mature enough to catch now.

While some lakes get cutthroat as well, lakes that are closer to cities, like Loon Lake, only get trout.

“It’s what the biologist puts in his request,” he said.

“In these urban lakes that are easy access and right around cities, they’re getting catchables. Your lakes that are further away are getting the cutthroat.”

After 49 days and 2,440 kilometres, Curtis Hargrove has reached the end of the Hugginz Highway.

Now all that’s left is gaining an audience with American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres so he can deliver a special Hugginz blanket from Angel Magnussen of Port Alberni, who has invited DeGeneres to come back to her studio to sew blankets for sick kids.

Hargrove and driver Allen Felker arrived in Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Hargrove ran a route on Sunday suggested by the Los Angeles Police Department to DeGeneres’ studio downtown.

When he got there, however, no one was there. He was going to try again Monday, after the News’ press deadline.

The phrase is buried deep in West Coast

author Caroline Woodward’s newest book, but it sums up the past few years of her life quite succinctly.

Light Years: Memoir of a Modern Lighthouse Keeper is a descriptive, well written tome of Woodward’s time as a lighthouse keeper on the West Coast.

She currently lives with her husband, photographer and fellow lightkeeper Jeff

People from the West Coast will recognize

many of the places she writes about.

She has worked at nearly a dozen lightstations since

2008, learning unexpected skills like estimating the altitude and coverage of clouds up to 2,500 feet or learning to give daily weather reports to Coast Guard radio.

She has worked at Nootka, Estevan Point, Pachena Point, Entrance Island, Chrome Island, Chatham Point, Cape Scott and Quatsino/ Kains Island.

through curiosity: she met a relief lighthouse keeper on a ferry on the way to Alert Bay and struck up a conversation with him. Several weeks later her husband received his first assignment, on Egg Island, and their life was transformed.

When she realized she could move to a remote island to devote herself to her true passion, there was no turning back.

“Lennard Island is my favourite because of the many beautiful flower beds, a lily pond and hedges of fuchsia and honeysuckle amidst the salal, planted by lightkeepers decades before us,” she said.

“On reasonably calm days—with no danger of fog—it is possible to kayak around the Clayoquot Sound islands nearby and to see wonderful wildlife like the annual March migration of over 23,000 gray whales to Alaska and many migrating birds as well.”

Childhood obesity is also a mental health issue among those aged two to 17 years increased from 15 per cent to 26 per cent. Increases were highest among youth, aged 12 to 17 years, with the percentage of children who were overweight or obese more than doubling for this age group, from 14 per cent to 29 per cent.

They add that in 2013, 42 million infants and young children were overweight or obese, worldwide and 70 million young children will be overweight or obese by 2025 if current trends continue. Without intervention, overweight infants and young children will likely continue to be overweight during childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

Why is it so hard to keep off the pounds? All people need is a balanced diet, the right calculations, enough exercise and willpower to make it through, right? Perhaps it is the huge restaurant portions and/or all the ‘foodie” focus.

anadians live in an abundant food environment; food is fast, convenient, often highly processed and relatively inexpensive.

As a result, Canada, like many nations, is in the midst of an epidemic of obesity.

According to the Childhood Obesity Foundation, in 2014, one in five Canadians, 18 years of age or older—roughly 5.3 million people—reported height and weight that classified them as obese. They also report overweight children and childhood obesity has been rising steadily in Canada in recent decades.

Between 1978-79 and 2004, the combined prevalence of overweight children and obesity

advertisements and couch potato enjoyment. Somehow, even with researchers having studied obesity/weight loss for generations and computers to do the simple work of tracking exercise and calories, no clearcut preventions for obesity, yet alone management tools have been established.

Now, just hang on a second.

Look out the window and watch the squirrels. Despite feasting on an all-you-can-eat buffet of acorns and with brains the size of a thumbnail, are there any squirrels waddling through the park, stricken with morbid obesity? Lucky squirrels: they have never heard about the need to diet and the importance of fitting into a BMI box.

People, on the other hand, have. And while “weight” is associated with a wide range of serious health complications and an increased risk of premature onset of illnesses, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease, the

psychological toll of dieting is just as serious.

Weight cycling is the repeated loss and regain of body weight.

When weight cycling is the result of dieting, it is often called “yo-yo” dieting. A weight cycle can range from small weight losses and gains (5-10 lbs. per cycle) to large changes in weight (50 lbs. or more per cycle).

In 2012, Michelle May MD and author of the Eat What You Love, Love What you Eat and Am I Hungry book series asked eight expert health psychologists for their opinions on ‘yo-yo’ dieting.

Collectively they stated; ‘it is not just yo-yo dieting, there is a yo-yo of emotions’.

The experts also agreed that the effect of yo-yo dieting has widespread implications. They believe the vicious cycle erodes a person’s belief in their own abilities, suffocates their sense of peace about their character, causes them to question their values as a person and sadly diminishes what they believe

they deserve in life. This trickle-down effect damages almost every area of their life: work, home and relationships.

Every human being born is unique. This means how each person “digests” life both physically and mentally, is unique. It seems then, there is no such thing as an easy blanket solution and there is only compassionate support on the journey of learning about what is best for oneself.

The cornerstone in the journey is not to lose hope that being well being exists and is within reach.

NIC instructor speaks PTSD with top RCMP officers North Island College instructor Dr. Michael Catchpole addressed 190 of B.C.’s top RCMP officers to speak on post-traumatic stress disorder at E Division Headquarters in

Surrey, BC earlier this month.

Catchpole is a widely recognized expert specializing in anxiety, obsessivecompulsive, and trauma- and stressor-

related disorders, as well as distance education.

“The RCMP recognizes the value of effective evidence based treatment and it’s an honour to be

invited to speak at this conference,” said Catchpole.

“They understand these are very good people who are sometimes exposed to horrible

consequences of crime during the life of their career.”

Catchpole has been teaching firstand second-year psychology courses at NIC‘s Port Alberni

Catchpole is also the winner of four awards for pioneering work in psychology education and educational technology, including two awards from the BC Psychological Association.

He loves sharing his knowledge with students at NIC. “When I walked into class this September, I had the same buzz I did 37 years ago,” Catchpole said.

“At NIC, instructors are what we teach.

Our carpentry instructors are carpenters, our fine arts instructors are artists.

“As instructors we get to share our passion and professional knowledge with students and it makes teaching that much more exciting.”

His work can be seen through 13 publicly available interviews and three one-hour educational DVDs produced and hosted with AnxietyBC on obsessive-compulsive disorder and separation anxiety in children as well as panic disorders in adults.

There will be a monthly meeting at 6:00 p.m. followed by the film and any discussion people would like to add on.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family announces the passing of Beverley Jean Cooke on the evening of Oct. 11, 2015 at the age of 74. Beverley passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with family by her side.

Beverley was predeceased by her parents, Edna and Bill; and brother Larry. Beverley is survived by loving husband Trevor; daughters Terri (Doug) and Lorie (Jeff ); stepchildren Tyler (Tammy), Bryce (Tanya), and Travis; grandchildren Kristin, Amber, Taiya, Talon, Jayden, and Branden; great grandchild Aiden; sister in law Rose (Clark); as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Beverley was born in Port Alberni, B.C. in 1941. She worked at the Government office for 35 years before her retirement in 2001. She was known for having the most vibrant smile and laugh that touched everyone. Beverley loved to travel, fish, and go boating to her favourite place; Beauty Island on Great Central Lake. Beverley will be deeply missed by all and whoever had the privilege of knowing her.

It was Beverley’s wish that no formal service to take place. Instead, a private family gathering will be held at a future date.

The family would like to thank Dr. Smit and the staff at West Coast General Hospital and Nanaimo General Hospital for all of the care they provided to our beloved Beverley.

May she rest in peace.

Michael PEARSON July 31, 1957 – October 9, 2015 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mike, an incredible husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Our sweet man passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, October 9th, 2015 at Ty Watson House in Port Alberni. He left us too soon after a courageous ten-year struggle against cancer.

He lived a loving, colourful and musical life, bringing joy and encouragement to all who knew him. How blessed we are to have had him in our lives. We will miss his strong, warm hugs and his gorgeous smile. He was the definition of patience, kindness and love, and we will all carry that love with us in our hearts forever.

Mike was born July 31st, 1957 in Nanaimo, B.C. to Mabel Eileen Pearson and Clifford Albert Pearson. He graduated from NDSS in 1975, and in 1979 he moved to Port Alberni with his soulmate and soon-to-be wife Louise. Here he began to work for Canada Safeway and was an invaluable support to Louise and Carolyn as they established Finishing Touches together in the Alberni Valley.

An avid artist, Mike played guitar and sang in many bands throughout his youth and early adult life, including Nullis Secundus, Sassy, Main Street and Rekless. Since then he played guitar with Harbour City Big Band and also sang in Timbre! for several years which he absolutely adored.

Attending the Hornby Island Blues Workshop every May was the highlight of Mike’s year. He was also well known for his photography, design and drawing skills including his Caricatures, highly-sought in the Valley and beyond for years.

On August 21st, 1982, Mike married the love of his life, Louise.

Together they shared a radiant love that will never cease.

They went on to have three beautiful daughters who were his entire world.

Mike is survived by wife, Louise; daughters, Larissa (Peter) Richards, Bryanna and Diana; parents, Mabel and Cliff; siblings, Neale (Denise) , and Heather (Don); brothers-in-law Bob (Cora) and Chris (Janet) and sister-in-law June; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and devoted friends, all of whom have been a tremendous help and comfort in his last months of life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 7th, 2015 at Jericho Road Church, 5100 Tebo Ave, Port Alberni, with Pastor John Cox officiating.

Everyone is welcome. Mike has requested a tie dye dress code, so please wear it if you have it (or something bright as an alternative).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ty Watson House Wish List at 2649 2nd Ave., Port Alberni, V9Y 1Z8.

Many thanks to oncologist Dr. Jason Hart without whom Mike may not have had ten extra years of health with his family. Also to Royal Jubilee Hospital and West Coast General Hospital. A heartfelt thank you goes also to the staff and volunteers of Ty Watson House, including Dr. Wendy Johnson, for their support and loving care of Mike and family in his final weeks.
