Loaves and Fishes prepares for a busy winter season City soup kitchen offers a welcoming and supportive environment

I

t certainly takes a generous community to support City-based mission Loaves and Fishes, where staff members and loyal volunteers are gearing up for the busy fall and winter season.

And in the middle of tough economic times, the needs are growing. Staff say more people are approaching Loaves and Fishes for assistance both with meals and also in finding the support they need within the community.

Covering expenses can be a challenge, particularly the ongoing operational costs of running the organization, said Executive Director Halina Jarvis. Those donated dollars for that purpose - along with the food donations of course - are particularly critical.

“You can’t serve the food or prepare it if you can’t run the facility,” she said. To that end, meetings with local politicians have been held in efforts to help secure some government funding that would be a huge help in helping with the day-today expenses. In the meantime, it’s about reaching more folks out there who might be willing to lend a helping hand.

“For the local agencies, it’s about finding the people who are passionate about what you are passionate about. Everybody has a passion - everybody has something that is close to their heart.”

Meanwhile, this season marks a challenging financial time as funds raised over the last busy Christmas season are essentially running out, and the spike in donations that start flowing with the coming holiday season haven’t really started to kick in yet. “We are doing it - we are meeting our obligations and paying our bills and our staff,” she said.

To that end, staff have planned a chili cook-off on Oct. 17th at 5 p.m. to spur some fundraising.

The competition has welcomed local radio personalities and business leaders in a culinary battle to win ‘The Deadliest Chili Ever’. There will be prizes for participants and door prize draws as well as an exciting silent auction of items donated by local artisans. Judging the competition will be members of Red Deer City council and local politicians as well.

Tickets are $5 at the door and that includes chili and a bun with a beverage.

The gallons of chili made for the event will provide a hot dinner for more than 200 hungry people the very next day at Loaves and Fishes.

“I think there is a great show of support for Loaves and Fishes in the community from individuals, churches, donors and businesses that contribute,” said Claudine Fleury, fundraising coordinator at Loaves and Fishes.

Founded in 1999, the Loaves and Fishes Benevolent Society is an independent charitable organization that offers hot, nutritious meals and food stuffs and an array of community programs and services.

“Our assistance is as diverse as the people who come to us for help,” reads part of their mandate. “We serve the disadvantaged, marginalized and challenged people in our communities in Red Deer and surrounding areas, a population base of more than 100,000 people in Red Deer and over 250,000 in Central Alberta.”

Loaves and Fishes also solely relies on community support - they receive no government funding.

The organization also provides more than 27,000 hot nutritious meals each year, fully prepared and served up by volunteers. They also make, pack and deliver an average of 33,500 school lunches annually for the School Lunch Program.

There is also, as mentioned, the outreach program which helps those in crisis by providing referrals to local agencies.

“We are often a ‘first stop’ for new arrivals in the City and offer friendship and

fellowship to those who are scared, lonely and at a loss for where to begin their new lives. We help teach people skills that can help them create positive forward movement in their lives.”

The level of need is something that can almost be overwhelming at times, but there is a consistent grace to manage.

And while winter may seem a ways off, plans for the Christmas season are of course well underway.

Several companies sign up to sponsor and host Christmas dinners throughout December at Loaves and Fishes. More local businesses are encouraged to host dinners as well. Jarvis said although the companies pay for the food and can opt to prepare it themselves, staff and volunteers at Loaves and Fishes are more than happy to cover the preparations as well.

At the end of the day, it’s about reaching out. As Jarvis pointed out, there are all kinds of reasons why people find themselves in desperate situations. Issues can range from mental health issues to sudden job loss to abrupt family changes.

dle? If you don’t have family or friends’ support, then now what?”

It boils down to an open door policy.

Jarvis said many folks keep in touch after being helped by Loaves and Fishes, and many locals consistently check in for visits now and then. “Our heart is to help people.”

Fleury agreed. “We are helping challenged lives transform into successful and productive ones through mentorship,” she said. “It sometimes means taking someone by the hand who is lonely and afraid and leading them through to a more secure and stable place. “(Being here) reminds you that there is hope for humanity. There is a family feel here at Loaves and Fishes, and I think it’s a place that tears down barriers when it comes to loneliness and isolation.”

Some of the volunteers come onboard to tap into that rich sense of family and security as well. “So the clients and volunteers are helping each other in different ways.”

An announcement was made at the Red Deer Airport this week where Municipal Affairs Minister Deron Bilous revealed a total of $6 million will be given over three years to support the airport’s expansion needs.

A partnership between the City of Red Deer, Red Deer County, the Red Deer Airport Authority and the Government of Alberta has made this expansion project a reality. In July this year, Mayor Veer had announced that a funding application was unsuccessful for the same project.

Each year for three years, $2 million will be provided from the Alberta Government to support the expansion of the Red Deer Airport runway. This project allows for larger commercial planes to access the area, and broaden the service of the airport.

“The funding from the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) program recognizes the long-term economic benefits of the airport expansion and effective collaboration that will strengthen the region,” said Bilous.

“The ACP program is dedicated to enhancing regional services and the airport is integral to the community at large as well as this region’s continued economic development. The expansion will provide the airport with the ability to accommodate larger aircraft and expand passenger and commercial service. This positive economic impact is impressive.

Just one 737 landing daily would generate $600,000 in annual revenue, 16 jobs, and $950,000 in direct annual wages.”

According to Bilous, the Red Deer Airport is one of the fastest expanding airports in Canada. The expansion project will see the major runway expanded in length by nearly 2000 ft., and 150 ft. in width.

“The Province of Alberta is excited to be partnering with the County, City and

Airport Authority for this expansion.

Quite frankly, it will lead to more economic diversification, which is a priority of our government. It will create jobs and strengthen and improve one of the fastest growing airports in Canada,” Bilous said.

“We know the runway will be expanded so the airport could allow for new carriers to come in. We’re expanding the capacity of the airport, for passenger and commercial planes, which will create many jobs and lead to a significant increase in economic development.”

It was an exciting day for CEO of the Red Deer Airport Authority RJ Steenstra, who said he has been looking forward to this milestone announcement.

“Today with the announcement from Minister Bilous, we make another and significant milestone - I might suggest the most significant to date. This runway extension is a key part of the airport and region as it will provide us with the ongoing ability to serve the public, generate jobs and provide enhanced economic prosperity for the citizens and businesses that call Red Deer and Central Alberta home,” Steenstra said.

“I am feeling tremendous excitement. A lot of things had to come before this announcement, so we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to really grow this airport. We really want to serve the needs of Central Alberta citizens and businesses. We’re just thrilled.”

Steenstra said the partnerships are currently engaged in a design process with an engineering firm and will be going to a Public Request for Proposal (RFP) on the construction in February. He said the construction would commence in April.

“This funding is a key that unlocks the airport from limitations. The ability for us to land large aircraft here opens a tremendous amount of possibility for the immediate community and other Central Alberta communities,” he said. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION Canadians are starting to head to the polls With the federal election less than a week away, Canadians have already flocked to the polls as the campaign nears the finish line.

Judging by the advanced polling Canadians are extremely eager to see some sort of a change in Ottawa. Locally, we have heard advanced polling stations have seen long lines and wait times which isn’t typically the case with any election.

According to Elections Canada, it is estimated that 1.6 million Canadians cast their ballots in the first two days of advanced voting - a 34% increase from the 2011 federal election.

Something has seemed to have shifted in the last two weeks - citizens are more engaged than they have ever been in what has been one of the longest campaigns in Canadian history being launched on August long weekend.

In the early days of the campaign, there was little appetite for anything of a polit-

ical nature, but things have now heated up and the election is a hot topic across the country.

As of Monday, the polls showed the Liberal Party ahead at 34.2% with the Conservatives at 31.7%. The NDP lagged behind at 23.4%.

The party leaders have certainly had a busy campaign - they’ve had 11 weeks to spread their messages across the country – an unusually lengthy period of time, considering most campaigns run about 37 days or so.

However not a single leader, which include Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, Green Leader Elizabeth May and Bloq Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe, has dropped into Red Deer during the last two months.

Harper may take for granted that Central Albertans are Tory Blue and maybe the other parties feel it may be somewhat of a loss cause - although with the recent

provincial election which saw the province vote in the NDP - it is odd we would be passed over.

One would think they would campaign quite vigorously in this area. Needless to say, come next Monday, it will be interesting to see how Central Albertans cast their ballots.

For such a lengthy campaign, it has certainly been a dull one. Of course we have seen the usual attack ads, fear-mongering and hundreds of press releases of the party’s hammering away at each other.

But there hasn’t been much meat - especially for those living in the west. Maybe that can’t be said for citizens in Ontario, but for us westerners, many see any federal election as being primarily decided by central Canada - which brings up other issues regarding electoral reform; but it remains to be seen what ultimately will happen with that.

Locally, Central Albertans have seen a boundary change that has been tough to

wrap our heads around. The boundary changes see Red Deer split into two constituencies and extensively spread into the rural areas. How will one MP effectively represent such a large and diverse riding? That will certainly be a challenge, no doubt.

Meanwhile, we are certain that once next Monday rolls around, Canadians will be electioned-out.

It’s certainly unusual for campaigns to be this long - according to The Canadian Press, only Canada’s first two election campaigns were longer.

The 1867 campaign lasted 81 days, while the 1872 campaign went for 96 days. At that time, voting was staggered over the country for a period of several months.

The longest race in recent history was a 74-day campaign back in 1926.

This time next week the political landscape of this country could be very different - it is up to citizens to make sure their voices are heard.

A lament for the Canadian political landscape It is supposed to be the easiest thing in the world. You enter the polling booth, make a mark with a pencil and then, a few hours later, a result is announced, a member of parliament is elected and democracy is said to have happened.

The democratic process begins well before elections with the work of informing people about issues, challenges, opportunities, threats and possible policies. For this work we rely on the ‘old’ media, social media as well as networks, families and campaign organizations.

This is not easy work, since complex issues get reduced to slogans and ideas to marketing. Few give time to study issues, relying instead on catch phrases and headlines for their information. One hundred and forty characters is not enough to

MURGATROYD convey the challenges of climate change, population decline, immigration or the challenges faced by our cultural institutions.

Yet the ‘twittersphere’ is becoming as important as newspapers, radio and television as means for conveying ideas. The commentariat – those who write to inform and comment – say less and less but do so more often.

Making sense of the world and seeing what needs to be changed is the essence of politics. Yet the world makes less sense to many and party politics

is just nonsense to some.

In fact, voter turnout over several elections shows the continued neglect of voting by a growing number of people across Canada. They are disengaged, disenfranchised and disgusted by politics.

But it is not just the lack of understanding that is affecting our politics. The cult of personality is also getting in the way. In the current Canadian federal election the media seems preoccupied with the leaders of the main political parties – they cover their every move. The only other concern is the various faux pas of candidates from all parties. The more bizarre the comment, behaviour, facebook entry or past university indiscretion the more space is dedicated to revealing the poor judgment of candidates.

Leaders matter. But so too does their analysis of

the challenges and their strategic intentions. So too does their ability to engage, involve and understand the needs of constituents. So too does the whole team that will have responsibilities in office, not just the leader. So too does policy.

Policy. That elusive thing.

That thing that seems to shift with the wind during an election. That thing that, though there have been many months and years to develop sound and measured detailed policies, seems to be rethought on the fly rather than stuck to because focus groups and polling suggest that it is not popular or is too complicated. We now see policy in terms of being seen to do good rather than doing the right things right.

Take climate change.

Taxing carbon emissions is seen by most to be doing

good and doing what is expected. Yet the right thing may be something quite different – changing the energy strategy of a nation, investing more in public transport and investing heavily in energy efficiency. Policy as a mantra rather than carefully thought through development seems to be the norm.

The economic strategy is an area where all tread carefully. The ‘balanced budget mantra’, which is an epidemic amongst Canadian politicians, makes little sense in a shifting and changing economy which, frankly, is not doing very well.

What is needed is stimulus spending, focused investments in innovation and a reinvestment in specific social programs to stimulate change. Debt should be welcomed, not feared. Only one leader

suggests this and is widely ridiculed by the commentariat for doing so.

The thinking voter seeks to understand such issues, wants to know that the candidates and their leaders understanding the issues and wants to see policies which address the complexity of the issues.

Sound bite policies are not enough. The engaged voter wants to be part of the process of developing policy and needs to see themselves able to participate in making policy happen locally, provincially and regionally. Instead, the parties just seek our vote, not our commitment.

Rather than engage, they seek to canvas and truck voters to the poll to ensure they vote. The electorate is vote-fodder, not engaged citizens.

Soroptimist’s Pyjamas and Pearls set for next month

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS The ladies of Soroptimist International, Central Alberta chapter are busy preparing for their Pyjamas and Pearls event - an annual fundraiser with entertainment, food and many great prizes to be won.

The event takes place on Nov. 7th at the Holiday Inn Suites in Gasoline Alley. Tickets are $80 each or $600 for a table of eight. Cocktails are at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

All proceeds from the event are used in local Soroptimist programs, specifically the annual MotherDaughter Conference, the new ‘Dream It, Be It’ conference and upcoming community awards and scholarship opportunities.

“THERE’S A VARIETY OF AGENCIES WE SUPPORT AND WE WANT TO USE THIS MONEY TO TEAM UP WITH THEM AND DO PROJECTS TOGETHER TO MAKE THE DONATION MORE MEANINGFUL.”

The ‘Dream It, Be It’ conference is a new organization-wide program that aims to encourage young girls to pursue post-secondary education.

“We’re still in the planning stages for it but we we’d like to have some career counselling and we hope to show them a bit about how to overcome adversity. It’s geared towards the girls who might not think they can or should go to school. It gives them a chance to learn about other careers women are in and that kind of thing,” Smith explained.

In order to fund raise for this event a special raffle will take place during the Pyjamas and Pearls event night.

“We’re going to be raising money for that event from one particular raffle where I’ve asked for autographed books by some published authors. We’ve got some really interesting books for that - I’ve got one from Jimmy Carter, one from Jackie Collins before she passed away, Amanda Lindhout, Chris Hadfield - a great selection.”

Another designated raffle will take place the evening of the Pyjamas and Pearls event that will see all proceeds go to the Mother-Daughter conference. As per tradition, the funds raised from the silent auction items of the night will go towards creating the Violet Richardson Scholarship Fund and the Live Your Dream: Education and Training awards program.

“Some of our auction prizes include an electric recliner from The Brick, a camera from McBain and a HarleyDavidson cooler filled with stuff from Candy Bags Sweet Stop. That is ongoing right now - we’re selling tickets for it now. We’re hoping to do really well with that,” said Smith.

The local Soroptimist branch is excited to also announce their partnership with the Community Foundation Fund to create a Soroptimist International of Central Alberta Fund.

“Now, charitable donation receipts can be issued to people who want to donate to Soroptimist. It’s funneled through and managed by the Community Foundation Fund, and they distribute the money where we want it to go. Our mission is pretty broad - to help women and girls - so we have a broad ability to help now,” Smith explained.

“We’re thinking about using that money for projects for domestic violence or human trafficking. There’s a variety of agencies we support and we want to use this money to team up with them and do projects together to make the donation more meaningful.

“The donations will go towards agencies that help women and girls and we’re excited to announce that because it’s not very well-known yet.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Public school district puts forward boundary options

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The announcement of a new elementary school opening in Inglewood in September 2017 means Red Deer Public Schools will make changes to elementary boundaries.

The new school in Inglewood, located on Inglewood Drive and Irving Crescent, will accommodate 500 students with room for up to 600 students through use of relocatable classrooms.

Construction is expected to begin in the late fall.

“We are delighted to be opening a new school in Inglewood to meet district needs. The project is going to tender right away, we expect construction to begin in the late fall and the school opens in September 2017,” said Stu Henry, superintendent of schools for Red Deer Public. “The new school created the opportunity to look at our facility needs for schools as well as programs for not only September 2017, but well into the future. We want to hear what the community has to say to ensure we make the best decision.”

Open houses were recently held in order to gain feedback from the community regarding the changes to elementary school boundaries.

Four scenarios were put forward and include Scenario A as having the Inglewood School serving current Mountview English students.

Mountview School would become a duel-track French Immersion/ Spanish bilingual school.

Christian Alternative students (Grades 9-12) would have a dedicated space at Lindsay Thurber and students in Vanier Woods/ Vanier East would move to the Inglewood School with students in Laredo being placed at Mattie McCullough.

Scenario B would also see the Inglewood School serving current Mountview English students with the Mountview School becoming a duel-track French Immersion/Spanish bilingual school. This scenario would also see Grandview School re-purposed as a Christian Alternative School (Kindergarten to Grade 3) with current Grandview School students relocating to other

schools. As well, Fairview ESL students would be redirected to neighbourhood schools for programming.

Students living in Vanier Woods/Vanier East would move to the Inglewood School with students in Laredo being placed at Mattie McCullough.

Scenario C would see the Inglewood School serving current Mountview English students with Mountview School becoming a single track French Immersion school which would also consolidate Barrie Wilson and Mountview programs. Grandview School would be repurposed as a Spanish Bilingual school (Kindergarten to Grade 8) and current students at Grandview would be relocated to other schools.

The Board is then expected to receive the recommendation and give initial approval on Jan. 13th. Following that, there will be a two week period for further public feedback and review.

A final decision regarding the changes is expected on Jan. 27th. The decision will be made public and implementation plans will be developed between January 2016 and September 2017. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Festival of Trees runs next month

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Officials are in full swing with planning the 22nd annual Festival of Trees. Tickets for various events recently went on sale and officials said tickets for some events have been going fast.

This year’s Festival of Trees runs Nov. 25th-29th at Westerner Park.

Events include the Preview Dinner on Nov. 25th; the Festival Business Lunch, Senior and Volunteer Appreciation and the Taste of Red Deer on Nov. 26th; the Festival of Wines on Nov. 27th; ‘Tis the Season Luncheon and Mistletoe Magic on Nov. 28th and Breakfast with Santa on Nov. 29th.

This year’s Festival will not include Festival Lights the Night and the Festival’s Winter Solstice. The Senior Appreciation and Volunteer Sneak a Peek will be combined as well.

Tickets for Mistletoe Magic and Festival of Wines are both sold out already.

“There is a lot of excitement for the event for sure and everything is going well. There is a little apprehension about our economy but for the most part our donors are sticking with us and coming through,” said Alaine Martin, project officer for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation.

For 21 years the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre has received more than $11.8 million from the Festival of Trees, and their mission is to continue this great event through the ever changing economy, officials said.

Further reductions will be to take the Festival back to two pavilions at Westerner Park by returning the children’s activity area Candy Cane Lane, back to Stockmen’s Pavilion. However, in regards to the Festival Lights the Night, officials are excited to announce that the City of Red Deer, in partnership with

the Downtown Business Association, will host a similar event ‘Red Deer Lights the Night’. This event will be a community celebration that will kick off the winter holiday season.

Fundraising efforts for this year’s Festival of Trees will be directed to enhance client care and services in the Medical Specialty Clinics at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Medical Specialty Clinics provides a multidisciplinary approach to care for clients in Central Alberta living with multiple sclerosis, Hepatitis C, heart failure and anticoagulation therapies as well as specialized geriatric services and stroke prevention complex medical conditions.

Over 2,000 clients per year access ambulatory services in the Medical Specialty Clinics. This number is anticipated to double by 2024.

All Central Alberta residents will benefit from the renovation and expansion of services by improving access to a specialized team and thereby decreasing wait times, officials said.

The renovations will result in an improved physical environment that supports clients with mobility aides, family presence at clinic appointments, and allowing for the creation of new and the expansion of existing services.

Enhancements to the Medical Specialty Clinics space will support individuals with chronic conditions to maintain maximum independence and avoid hospitalization.

BIRDS SHOT AT WILDLIFE CENTRE

On Oct. 9th, staff of the Medicine River Wildlife Centre arrived to a horrific scene. Inside one of the outdoor flight pens, all of the resident and soon-to-be-released crows and ravens were found shot in the head. In total six crows and two ravens were targeted. Two are clinging to life while the others were already dead.

This invasion on our property has left staff and volunteers feeling uncomfortable for their own safety. Police are investigating.

MEN SOUGHT AFTER ASSAULT AND ROBBERY RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify two men who assaulted and robbed a man in downtown Red Deer in the early hours of Oct. 3rd.

The victim was walking home after work at 1:45 a.m. when an older model black Dodge car pulled up beside him in the area of 47th Ave. and 55th St.; two men got out of the car and demanded his money. They assaulted the victim and took his wallet, and were last seen driving southbound on 47th Ave. The victim

by Erin Fawcett was taken to hospital by EMS, treated for minor injuries and later released. He did not know his assailants.

MAN ARRESTED FOR OFFENCES AGAINST GIRL

SUSPECTS The suspects were caught on camera shortly afterward using the victim’s debit card at a Red Deer convenience store. They then used it again in Calgary at 5:30 a.m.

Suspect number one is described as Caucasian, in his late teens with a slim build with a brush cut. He was wearing a white and black hoodie, jeans and running shoes.

Suspect number two is described as being in his late teens with a slim build and short brown hair. He was wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and running shoes.

A 40-year-old Blackfalds man has been charged by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams for online child sexual exploitation offences allegedly committed against a Pennsylvania girl.

Brian Haberman was arrested on Oct. 7th by members of ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit, with assistance from Blackfalds RCMP and Red Deer RCMP. Haberman allegedly travelled to Pennsylvania to have sex with a 16-year-old girl he met online. A search of computers and electronic devices seized from Haberman’s home found evidence of sexually explicit photos of the victim, who was apparently 15-years-old when the relationship began.

Haberman is charged with child luring; making sexually explicit material available to a minor; possessing child pornography; accessing child pornography; and making child pornography.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT WITH GIRL RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify a man who tried to convince an eightyear-old girl to enter his truck on Oct. 7th.

The girl had just gotten off a school bus on Addington Drive at 4 p.m. and begun to walk eastbound when a man in a brown truck driving westbound stopped and attempted to convince her to enter the truck, reversing the truck to get closer to her. When she refused and ran

to her home, the suspect drove away, continuing westbound on Addington Drive.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 18 to 20-years-old with blonde hair, blue eyes, with a black tattoo beside his eye. He was wearing a white shirt over another white shirt and driving a light brown two-door truck.

RCMP ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

RCMP ARREST MAN WITH STOLEN VEHICLE Red Deer RCMP arrested a man in possession of a stolen vehicle on Sept. 23rd after the vehicle’s owner followed the suspect to south Red Deer and called police.

At 9 p.m. on Sept. 23rd, RCMP attended London Drugs in response to a report that a stolen vehicle had stopped there and the driver was in the store. The victim, whose Jeep Wrangler had been stolen on Sept. 21st out of Blackfalds, recognized his stolen vehicle as it drove through Red Deer and followed it until it parked outside of the store. The victim did not attempt to confront the suspect, but waited for RCMP to arrive.

The suspect tried to flee police and then to resist arrest, but was taken into custody without injury to the suspect or officers.

Red Deer RCMP had recovered the license plate that belonged to the stolen Jeep earlier in the day on Sept. 23rd.

Francis Dale McKinnon, 41, has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, two counts resisting/obstructing a peace officer, two counts of breach of recognizance, two counts of disobeying a court order, failing to comply with undertaking and possessing break-in instruments.

WESTERNER PARK SELECTS A CEO

After an extensive search, the board of directors of Westerner Park have announced the selection of a new CEO and general manager, Ben Antifaiff, who will join the organization Jan. 1st.

Antifaiff is a chartered professional accountant and has an MBA from the University of Regina.

He has more than 15 years of leadership experience in a number of organizations, most recently aerospace and the events and entertainment industry.

Since July of 2013, Antifaiff has held the role of VP of finance/administration and chief financial officer with the Regina Exhibition Association Ltd.

CITY RECOGNIZED WITH AWARD The City of Red Deer’s Composting at Home program has been recognized by the Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA) with the 2015 Social Marketing Award. The Rs of Excellence Awards were presented

at the RCA’s Waste Reduction Conference at the Fairmont Banff Springs recently. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation in Alberta.

The Composting at Home Program gives participants the tools and training they need to start backyard composting, in exchange for a commitment to compost for one year.

Since the program launch in 2012, 839 households have committed to composting with approximately 72% of households maintaining their composting practices one year later.

“We are so proud of this accomplishment,” said Lauren Maris, environmental program specialist. “Not just of our team that has helped to promote the composting program, but also of our residents who have embraced composting and are putting in the time and effort to make it an ongoing practice.”

The Composting at Home program has increasingly grown in popularity. In 2014, the 200 spaces available to

“Composting has so many benefits to both the environment and the homeowner,” said Maris. “It can significantly reduce your household garbage, it can be used to add nutrients to your lawn and garden, and it helps in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Those interested in joining the Composting at Home program in 2016 are encouraged to plan ahead by collecting at least two big garbage bags full of fallen leaves to store in a dry place over the winter.

As rainfall runoff (and snow melt) flows across grass, sidewalks, driveways and asphalt, it picks up pollutants and carries those into storm drains, also known as catch basins.

These chemicals and/or bacteria directly enter the storm water collection system and ultimately the river, without any treatment from the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Pollutants in the river can encourage algae growth and lead to decreased oxygen levels, which can kill fish and other aquatic organisms.

The City has undertaken a public education campaign this fall to remind Red Deerians about the changes they can make to avoid polluting the watershed.

Red Deerians are asked to prevent leaves and grass clippings from entering storm drains, as well as scoop up pet poop, pick up litter, avoid pesticides and use fertilizers sparingly. Leaves should be placed in a paper yard waste bag or bin labelled with a yard waste sticker so materials are composted at the Waste Management Facility. Yard waste in plastic bags will be considered garbage.

While leaving grass clippings on one’s lawn is good for the lawn, anything that spills off onto sidewalks or driveways should be swept back onto the lawn. The same goes for fertilizer.

“We ask that people consider organic fertilizers or more environmentally friendly methods for caring for their lawns. If they want to use fertilizer, we ask they spend a couple of minutes sweeping anything that spills onto the sidewalks back onto the lawn,” said Tam.

SPEED CHANGES Starting on Oct. 14th the speed limits on the 67 St./30 Ave. bend and on Riverside Drive will change.

The speed limit on 30 Ave. from Timothy Drive to 150m west of Garden Gate on 67 St. will change to 60 km/h, a reduction from 70 km/h.

The speed limit on Riverside Drive from 49 Ave. to the 67 St. westbound ramp will change to 60 km/h.

This is an increase from 50km/h on the western section of Riverside Drive and a decrease from 70 km/h on the eastern section.

The speed limit change comes in response to improving safety on these arterial road sections, and addressing the development needs of new growth areas and intersections.

Drivers are asked to always obey the posted speed limit and to be aware of changes to on-street speed limit signage, which will have flags for the first couple of weeks alerting motorists to the change.

The RCMP and Community Peace Officers will enforce the new speed limit changes.

Murder trial set to begin in Red Deer next week

The charges are in connection to the death of Jenna Cartwright, a young Red Deer mother.

Cartwright, 21, of Red Deer was found in a ditch near Olds in May 2011. She was last seen in Red Deer on March 29th, 2011.

Gaashaan was arrested on June 13th, 2011 in Thunder Bay after what RCMP describe as an exhaustive investigation involving about 30 police investigators and over 4,000 hours. An arrest team of three police officers flew to the Ontario city where Gaashaan was arrested on the warrant and escorted back to Red Deer to answer to the charges. He has been held in custody since his arrest.

Cartwright’s body was discovered at about 7 p.m.

on May 3rd, 2011. The RCMP in Olds were advised about the discovery of a body in a rural location about 4 kms northeast of the town. The discovery had been made by a resident of the area who had been driving at the time.

The body was seen lying adjacent to a roadway.

The scene was examined by the RCMP Forensic identification Section and the Calgary Major Crimes Unit was called in to assist in this investigation.

The remains were removed to the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Officer who conducted an autopsy.

The results of the autopsy concluded that this death should be considered as a murder, but the actual cause of death is not being released. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Wildrose Shadow Minister for Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour Grant Hunter recently stopped in Red Deer to discuss the minimum wage plan and how his party would address moving forward with it.

Hunter kicked off the tour on Oct. 5th, with the intention of stopping in communities to speak to potentially affected persons.

“One of the messages we’re bringing to Red Deer is this: the NDP government has come out with a $15/ hour minimum wage, which is a 50 per cent increase from eight days ago. What we’re trying to say to people is, ‘What are you looking at for cost? how is it going to affect businesses? How’s it going to affect labour? Will we lose jobs?’.

“We want to find out the full picture here,” said Hunter.

“What we’re trying to say to people is that maybe we need to step back from this and look at it a little more carefully.”

Hunter and his team are making stops in Okotoks, Calgary, Airdrie, Innisfail, Red Deer and Lacombe for this leg of the tour. He has chosen to speak to selected business owners and chains about the potentials of change in their industry with the increases.

“This whole process of a tour is about connecting to people. We want to be able to raise awareness - there is a big issue, and that is the NDP saying this is a living wage. We want to make sure that people understand this isn’t about a living wage. We believe that people should have a living wage, but the process of getting there is different,” he said.

He said Albertans may be in favour of the proposed minimum wage, but that it could potentially cause them to later lose jobs due to the pressure on businesses.

On the living wage, Hunter said a number cannot be given as to what would be appropriate because it changes in accordance with where Albertans are located in the province.

“What’s appropriate in Calgary is not appropriate in say, Lethbridge. The numbers (in Central Alberta) I think would probably be more in line with what’s in Edmonton - but what’s the number? In my personal opinion, the number should be dictated by the market. As the market can bear it, people should be paid more. If the market can’t bear it, people will lose their jobs. Remembering local pioneers the Harbison Brothers Pioneer life in western Canadian was a very challenging experience.

Conditions were primitive - at times even brutal and life-threatening.

Among the pioneers in Central Alberta, who were beset by tragedy in the early years, were the Harbisons - Jack, Joseph (Jr.) and Samuel.

Harbisons were originally from Newry, Ireland.

Their mother Annie passed away in 1877 after giving birth to the youngest boy Samuel. In 1885, Joseph Sr. decided to emigrate to Canada with his six children.

They took up residence in Hamilton, Ontario.

One of the older boys, Jack, soon decided to try his luck on the Canadian prairies. He worked his way west on the Canadian Pacific Railway, ultimately ending up in Alberta.

Jack started a ranch near Penhold.

Joe Jr., although he was only 15, went west in 1887 and initially worked in lumber camps near Revelstoke and Golden.

Later, Joe moved to Alberta and joined Jack at his Penhold ranch.

DAWE By the mid-1890s, the Harbison brothers had built up a herd of more than 400 cattle.

They became two of the earliest ranchers to range cattle in the rich grasslands east of the Red Deer River.

Joe eventually acquired land southeast of Stettler, where strong flowing springs ensured a reliable supply of water for the livestock.

The winter of 1896-97 was a harsh one and food ran short.

Joe headed back to the Red Deer/Penhold area for supplies. On the return journey, he became snow blind and was then caught in a terrific blizzard.

He only survived by digging a shelter for himself in a snowdrift. When he made it back to his ranch, he found 20 starving people waiting for him. They had been surviving on a

bit of muskrat meat while he was gone.

In 1900, the youngest brother Samuel came out from Hamilton to join Jack and Joe. He first went to Penhold and then out to Joe’s ranch.

On Sept. 23rd, 1900, Joe decided to go to a nearby ranch belonging to the Whiteside family, who were old friends from Penhold. Samuel set off for another nearby ranch, the Royal, where he hoped to locate some cattle which had strayed.

As the day progressed, one of the worst fall blizzards in Alberta’s history struck. It was such a massive gale that local news reports referred to it as a ‘Texas Storm’.

One of the trains on the rail line between Calgary and Red Deer got stuck for several hours in a massive snow drift. Coulees across Central Alberta were filled with snow.

It soon became apparent that Samuel had been lost in the storm. As soon as they were able, Joe and Ed Whiteside went out, with some other neighbours, to search for Sam. They were unsuccessful.

ally found in January in a clump of willows. He had dismounted from his horse in the storm, taken his saddle off for a pillow and wrapped himself in a blanket. Tragically, he soon froze to death.

The horse had gotten tangled up in its tether, fallen to the ground and frozen to death as well.

Sam was brought back to Penhold and then buried in the Innisfail cemetery.

Jack had married Christina Johnson in April 1894, but she passed away on Aug. 16th, 1902. He then mar-

ried Mary Elizabeth Wilson in August 1903. They lost a baby boy in February 1905 and then Mary died in April at the age of 22.

Jack went into a number of business ventures including a livery barn, a butcher shop in Penhold and then the Royal Hotel in Innisfail.

In 1906, he married Grace Hawkins and went out to Marion Lake (south of Botha) to join Joe. However, 1906-07 was another brutal winter.

Grace passed away in 1969 and is buried by Jack in the Innisfail cemetery.

Meanwhile, Joe married Edna Olive from south of Stettler in 1908. They were successful ranchers and became very active in the community. They had six children - David, Josephine, Mary, Joe, Betty and Jeanne.

Joe passed away in 1939 and Edna in 1959.

Members of the Harbison family still live in Central Alberta.

Library launches ‘Bags of Books’ project Books can work miracles for children who are struggling and displaced due to domestic issues which is the reason behind the volunteer-led Bags of Books Project.

Books provided through the annual project foster bonding and encourage healing for hundreds of children and moms temporarily living in the Central Alberta Women’s Shelter (CAWES), said organizer Maureen Miller.

“Reading can take people of every age to another place where they can experience security and safety,” she said. “A simple story can be a companion, a hope for change and a new beginning when seen through the eyes of another character or place in time.”

For the past seven years, years, Miller and Red Deer Public Library’s Children’s Services Coordinator Laural Grimes have worked with CAWES to solicit donated

books, obtain cloth bags and pack them up to give to children housed at the shelter.

The project has been a huge success, said CAWES Board Chairman Ian Wheeliker.

“We have worked with shelters across Alberta to establish best practices for maternal-child bonding and healthy childhood development and the Bags of Books project is one of the most successful and best practices we have established to help children with their healing journey.”

Miller, along with children from the Red Deer community, happily volunteer their time once a year to pack carefully selected children’s books into bags which are stored at the shelter and given to children who are staying there.

Additional packing will be taking place Oct. 17th.

Organizers gear up for early onset Alzheimer’s event

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Early Onset Dementia Alberta (EODA) in partnership with the Alzheimer Society is hosting the third annual Building Dementia Awareness Conference this month in Red Deer. The event runs Oct. 30th-31st.

Folks are asked to register by Oct. 26th by emailing eodarep@gmail.com. Admission is free.

Highlights of the program include exploring awareness and education for EODA by reviewing home care differences across the province; the lack of services and programming for early onset patients and their caregivers; long-term care for dementia patients who are still physically active; diagnosis and medical supports and awareness and education for dementia.

Discussion will also revolve around how families and caregivers can continue to advocate for their concerns.

Guest speakers on Oct. 30th at Red Deer College’s Margaret Parsons Theatre include Mollie Cole on Appropriate Use of Anti-Psychotics in the Care of Persons with Dementia; Dr. Duncan Robertson - a

specialist in internal and geriatric medicine from Victoria; Donna Durand, executive director with the Alberta Council on Aging and Red Deer’s own Larry Quintillio, the local representative with EODA. In attendance on Oct. 31st at the Sheraton Hotel will be Dr. David Westaway, director of the Alberta Centre for Prions and Prion Folding Disease, and board president of ASANT. Also speaking on various topics will be Laurie Grande, ASANT’s client services and programs; Brande Terashita (children of EODA), Betty Payne (financial support); Kim White and Maggie (companion dog allowing independence); the Red Deer RCMP PACT division (support for independent living at home) and the Alberta Caregivers Association.

Meanwhile, Quintilio wants to reach out to those who are dealing with an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

His wife June passed away from the disease in her 60s – considerably younger than the age most people likely believe most folks are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. But June had been struggling with symptoms for many years prior to her death as well.

Larry recalls knowing by 2005 or 2006 that something was wrong.

June was resistant to talking about the possibility, so actually nailing down a diagnosis took time. She passed away after spending three and a half years in the Centennial Centre in Ponoka. Larry’s growing concern over his wife’s symptoms prompted him to move his office to their basement for a year. He later retired so he could care for June full-time.

These days, Larry has helped to spearhead Early Onset Dementia Alberta, a group committed to spreading the word that this disease affects younger people as well – people who are still, in some cases, paying mortgages or even raising families and have all kinds of financial responsibilities.

He said this month’s conference is an excellent opportunity for people to come and hear experts discuss the latest about early onset dementia. He also pointed out that he’s formed many strong friendships with other conference attendees over the past few years, as they have much in common and can share their experiences. “I’ve met a lot of really good people through this.”

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive,

degenerative disease of the brain, which causes thinking and memory to become seriously impaired. It is the most common form of dementia. Quintilio also pointed out that 72% of those diagnosed with early onset dementia are women.

In the meantime, Larry says a strong, supportive network of family and friends is crucial to coping. He’s also interested in helping others who are facing similar circumstances.

“I’m the biggest advocate of support groups,” he said, adding that support groups are ideal places to help educate others about ways you have found are helpful to cope. “People that have gone through this disease are coming back and sharing things that they have learned.”

Red Deer College releases online tool to assist students Program helps prospective students to explore more facets of the facility As Red Deer College is now accepting applications for students wishing to start classes in September, 2016, the organization is excited to release a new tool to assist prospective students in learning more about the College’s Schools, programs and services.

The Custom Viewbook is a new online tool that allows students interested in attending RDC to build tailored information specific to their potential areas of interest.

Dr. Paulette Hanna, vice president, academic at RDC, thinks this is an important evolution in assisting potential students in getting the information that is most valuable to them.

“With an increasing number of post-secondary institutions for students to choose from, it is important for us to provide innovative tools for prospective students to use as they consider RDC as their choice for post-secondary education.”

The Custom Viewbook allows for RDC to share more unique and detailed information than in traditional printed publications about each of the College’s Schools, programs and

services with prospective students.

The online version is targeted at prospective students and the people in their lives who help them make decisions about post-secondary education including parents, siblings, high school counsellors and teachers.

With just a few simple steps, prospective students can choose the variety of information they wish to receive.

Trent Rix, director of student services at RDC, was involved in the implementation of the tool and believes it helps showcase the diversity of programs offered at RDC. “We know our student population is diverse, so it was important that we have a tool that helps students get the information they need to make decisions in a quick and easy to use way.

“We know that students may have a variety of programs that pique their interests.

“Using the tool to create their Custom Viewbook, they can choose as many programs and services as they want to receive information about,” shared Rix. The information is shared via email, provid-

ing each prospective student a unique web site address that allows a student to go back to view or modify their Custom Viewbook whenever they wish, email it to others or choose to print the very most important information.

Individuals who create a Custom Viewbook through to Dec. 15th will be entered into a draw to win an Apple iPad mini (16 GB).

There is also more opportunities to include studying at RDC even closer in the future.

ENTERTAINMENT Claire Lynch Band including City on current tour

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Singer Claire Lynch has been spreading the joys of bluegrass music for many years now, and fans will be able to witness her tremendous skills firsthand Oct. 22nd at the Elks Lodge. The show is being presented by the Central Music Festival Society.

Lynch, a multi-award winning American bluegrass musician, is heading out on her first tour through the prairies this month.

She’s made a few stops throughout Canada from time to time, but this marks the first organized and extensive tour of western Canada. ”I imagine we will meet up with friends and acquaintances from Alberta and Manitoba, but I’ve never been to Saskatchewan or Calgary,” said Lynch. “I’m really looking forward to exploring more of such a vast and beautiful place.”

Her latest albums Dear Sister and Holiday! have been described as musical offerings of love, celebration and heartfelt connection.

For her tour, Lynch will be backed by Bryan McDowell (fiddle-mandolin), Jarrod Walker (mandolin-guitar) and Mark Schatz (bass-banjo).

Lynch is a pioneer who continually pushes the boundaries of bluegrass . She was the 2013 Female Vocalist of the Year for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and a 2012 recipient of the United States Artists Walker Fellowship.

Her career has been decorated with many other accolades including two Grammy nominations and three International Bluegrass Music Association Female Vocalist awards in 2010 and 1997.

Recently, at the 2014 IBMA Awards, she received two trophies: ‘Song of the Year’ for Dear Sister, a co-write with Louisa Branscomb and title cut of her latest Compass Records release

and ‘Recorded Event of the Year’ for a guest vocal appearance with Special Consensus on Country Boy; A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver.

Blazing her own trail in the mid 70s when there were few role models for a young woman in the genre, Lynch made history when she led the Front Porch String Band, which evolved in the 80s and 90s into “one of the sharpest and most exciting post-modern bluegrass bands on the circuit.” She formed her own Claire Lynch Band in 2005.

Lynch grew up in Kingston, New York until the age of 12 when the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama.

“My family is musical, so growing up there was a lot of singing around the dinner table, or in the car,” she recalls during a recent interview from Raleigh, North Carolina. “My mother played piano, and my father had a beautiful tenor voice.

“I also had two sisters who would sing harmony with me and we would do trios in church - there was a lot of church music growing up,” she said. “We also had a saying - there’s a song for every occasion.

“I had also spent afternoons during high school over at my girlfriend’s house - in her garage - with guitars and tape recorders, writing songs. That love for music was just inbred.”

In Alabama, she discovered the charms of bluegrass on a college campus in Huntsville, Alabama.

“A friend of mine from high school showed up playing in a bluegrass band,” she said. “The more I got into it, the more I saw that three-part harmony was just a huge part of it. I thought, well, I can do that,” she added with a laugh.

She also perfected her guitar playing - learning how to ‘flat pick’ rhythm guitars as well.

During those years, bluegrass and folk were styles that were soaring in popularity.

“My generation gravitated to bluegrass at the tale-end of the folk era. You could take an entire

There was no electricity needed.” The style suited the nature of her voice to a ‘T’ as well. “I think if you put me in a pop band, well, I don’t know how well I would do,” she laughed.

She eventually joined a band called Hickory Wind. Later, the band changed its name to the Front Porch String Band with Lynch’s vocals as its centerpiece.

In 1981, the group retired from the road and Lynch pursued dual careers in addition to raising a family.

As a songwriter, her tunes have been recorded by such luminaries as Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, The Whites and Stephanie Davis. In 1991, the Front Porch String Band was resurrected with the album Lines and Traces, a move that led to the launching of Lynch’s solo career in earnest.

The band wrapped up the 20th century with the album Love Light in 2000. At that time Lynch took what she thought would be a

break from music. Little by little, the lure of music worked its way back. She sang harmony on The Grass is Blue and Little Sparrow which led to promotional touring as backup vocalist for Dolly Parton. It proved to be an utterly magical experience. She describes Parton as ever gracious, kind, generous and fun to be with.

“She grew up in the mountains of Tennessee, so she knows all about mountain music and bluegrass,” said Lynch. “In about 1999 to about 2001, she decided to do those bluegrass albums - she did a series of three, and on two of them I was asked to sing harmony. She was also at a stage in her career where she didn’t want to do full-time touring so she did a couple of years of promotional touring for the albums.”

Lynch found herself backing Parton on some pretty exciting gigs including the Grammys, Letterman and Leno. “We did all of the really cool gigs. “I had the privilege and honour of being with her at band practice. She’s

really really generous with her time. She also talks to everyone in the room - it doesn’t matter if you are the guy filling the water cooler.” It’s that kind of connection with people that has fueled Parton’s impact over the years.

“I’ve seen her walk by fans and they just break into tears.”

As mentioned, in 2005, Lynch struck out on her own, releasing the New Day CD. It was a hit on the charts and earned her IBMA nominations for ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Female Vocalist of the Year.’

In early 2013, Lynch signed a recording deal with Nashville roots label Compass Records.

With their co-founder Garry West producing, she released the ninth solo recording of her career titled Dear Sister.

The band’s newest release, just last year, was a seasonal project titled Holiday! on Lynch’s own label Thrill Hill Records.

Lorne Elliott brings music and comedy to City

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS You’re not going to find a nicer, more easy-going comedian than Canada’s own Lorne Elliott, who is including Red Deer on his current tour with a show at the Welikoklad Centre on Oct. 24th.

Performance time is 8 p.m.

Elliott has been perfecting his comedic performances for about 40 years, so there is no question he’s a pro. But he’s also a charming, warm and extremely affable man - whether it’s during an interview or in front of hundreds. And those are the qualities that have fueled his popularity across the nation and abroad these many years now.

“A sense of humour is common sense,” he said during a recent chat, pointing out how important it is to laugh - a key to keeping a healthy perspective in life.

Enjoying a laugh within an audience is that much more fun. “There’s a place in our culture for that.”

His concert performance is a selection of monologues and songs dealing with life experience, so there’s an immediate universality. “It’s about those little things that happen - the stories that come out of those situations.

“Also, with a stand-up show, you can throw things in and take stuff out on the fly - that’s kind of the excitement of it.

But it does take 40 years before you get comfortable with doing that,” he added with a laugh.

And along with his wacky style, it is the timelessness of his material melded with observations of trends that propel his shows to the forefront.

“I started going on stage at a time when hair like mine was fashionable, and I hung a guitar hung around my neck to complete the look. Somewhere around that time people started laughing at me, and I saw no reason why I shouldn’t join them.”

That’s pretty much how it all started, and it’s been a journey of writing, performing, sharing and keeping close tabs on the culture’s pulse that has provided reams of inspiration for his shows ever since. But he’s not restricted to his oneman shows - Elliott is also a prolific playwright as well.

One of his plays, The Night The Racoons Went Berserk, won the Best New Play Award at the Quebec Drama Festival 1983 and it was produced at the Charlottetown Theatre Festival in 1986 along with Culture Shock, another comedy of his which has been produced across Canada since 1981: it was filmed by CBC TV in 1989. It was also produced in Red Deer just a few years ago with tremendous results. Other highlights include Tourist Trap which premiered in August 2000 at Theatre On The Grand in Fergus (Ontario) and it has had several productions across Canada since then, the latest in Newfoundland in 2012.

His play How I Broke Into Showbiz was produced in Charlottetown in 2005 and Culture Shock – The Musical premiered in July 2009 at the Stephenville Theatre festival.

He has also written screenplays and TV comedies, skits and revues. For CBC he did TV Comedy Variety shows, among others What Else is On and Lorne Elliott’s Really Rather Quite Half-Decent TV Special.

But back to his one-man shows - his presentation, much loved by audiences around the world, is delightfully foolish, witty and thought-provoking.

FUNNY GUY - Canadian comedian Lorne Elliott brings his multi-layered stream of antics to the Welikoklad Centre on Oct. 24th. in theatres across Canada, the U.S. and Australia.

Clearly, Elliott is multi-talented. He enjoys applying his raw creativity to a number of genres, adding that each in turn fuels the others. “One thing nourishes the other,” he said. “It’s all about keeping that creative side of you alive.”

Being funny just comes naturally to Elliott. And he gets lots of ideas and inspiration from regular funny folks wherever

he runs into them - it hasn’t been necessarily the big shot celebrities that have provided the most influence.

“People who I just run into and have a good time with - and they make me laugh.”

And although he comments on serious situations, the bright side always shines through. Coming up with material used to come in sudden creative jolts. And sure, there may be those nights where he feels a bit tired, or maybe even isn’t feeling well at all. But once he hears that first laugh, something magical tends to happen.

“Where you get the energy from is the audience - people laugh - they feel good and then you feel good. That’s what it’s all about - making a roomful of strangers happier then when they first came in. You really feel honoured.”

Jesse Roper heads to Red Deer on Oct. 17th With the incredible year he has had since the release of his album Red Bird, Victoria-based singer Jesse Roper has performed at some of the west coast’s greatest festivals this summer, including Rifflandia.

He is now embarking on a house concert tour to give back to the support his fans have shown this year, with a stop in Red Deer Oct. 17th.

Project, Roper recently released his latest (and free) single, Cupid. Along with the single release, he will be launching a charity initiative through October to support Victoria’s local charity Our Place Society.

fans may appreciate his throw back vibe which is reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Texas blues, however, Roper’s tunes are unmistakably modern.

There isn’t a ‘run of the mill’ song in the bunch everything breathes with a refreshing authenticity.

This is music that reaches out and grabs the listener, essentially demanding a response.

There is no room for indifference.

Roper released Red Bird early this year with Blue Heron Music. Without losing the sentimental and vintage authenticity of blues, the album is blazing its own path in the music scene not unlike modern yet retro influenced musicians such as the Black Keys and Jack White.

The disc’s energy is unrestrained, and there is no doubt that Roper is having the time of his life every step of the way.

A love for music came early. Starting the guitar at six years old, Roper soon mastered songs of heroes like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin by ear.

Battling with stage fright, he was thrown out onto the stage with sweaty palms and a queasy stomach, which was quickly overshadowed by the audience’s overwhelmingly positive reaction. With an engaging set of recordings there is no doubt a live

performance would be that much more compelling.

Roper has also shared the stage with many great artists over the years while also landing a number of accolades.

RDC theatre studies opens new season with Almost, Maine

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer College theatre students are off to a wonderfully creative start this fall with their first production of the season Almost, Maine by John Cariani.

Directed by Calgary-based Kevin McKendrick who is also an accomplished performer, producer, teacher and arts administrator, performances run Oct. 15th-17th and Oct. 20th-24th in Studio A. Curtain is 7:30 p.m. There are also a matinees set for Oct. 17th and 24th at 1 p.m.

The story revolves around a few folks from the community of Almost, Maine.

As the synopsis reads, one cold, clear, “Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways.

McKendrick said Almost, Maine is the most-produced play in North America.

“I think that’s because it’s nine stories about love that concern young people. I don’t think there is a character over 35 or 40 in the play,” he explained. “Each character also has an equal amount to say which is hard to find, to find that balance for scene study.”

As to the plot, some of those love stories aren’t immediately successful - or successful at all.

“Some are unrequited, others are love stories that have been going on for a decade or so,” he said, adding that the play’s sensibilities remind him of the 90s TV series Northern Exposure. “There are similar types of relationships. It’s also a commu-

nity where everybody knows everybody else. And everybody knows everybody else’s business.

“So on this one Friday night, deep in the middle of winter when the Northern Lights are dancing, nine stories of love happen.

“Another thing that is charming about it is that every one of the nine stories has an episode of a kind of ‘magic realism’, where something totally illogical, something that you might believe could not possibly happen in real life - actual happens.

“And it’s completely part of the characters’ lives at that moment,” he said.

“It’s whimsical and magical - every scene has a little whimsical, magical moment that the audience doesn’t see coming.”

McKendrick said that playwright Cariani’s script is powered by his exemplary way with words, in a time when, “Young people in particular and society in general don’t value the spoken word to the same extent that we once did. The way scenes are constructed, and the use of figures of speech - it’s a great teaching tool for actors but it’s also a very evocative way to bring a play to life.”

Meanwhile, the cast numbers 11, and McKendrick has enjoyed the experience of guiding the young, talented troupe as they explore the nuances of Almost, Maine. Studio A, with its more intimate, smaller setting, lends itself nicely to the nature of Almost, Maine as well.

“It’s a kind of spot I would prefer to work in - a lot of my work in Calgary is done with smaller companies so we aren’t in large venues that seat 500 to 700 people.”

As the play has taken shape, McKendrick

also noted that he enjoys the collaborative process. “I don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, but I have to recognize the smartest ideas.

“So I like to foster that idea of ‘let’s create stuff collaboratively, but I’m going to be the final filter taking it towards performance.

“To be a director, you have to be a curious person - you have to be curious about what makes the world work. And one of the joyful parts of this job is that every time you take on a play, you learn a little bit about another world,” he said.

This particular production will also be set up with audience members seated on three sides of the unfolding drama.

“So they can see each other across the stage which is also part of this idea of ‘this community is part of our community’,” he explained.

“The challenge is, can we get the audience to forget that they are in a theatre, and to get them lost in the story. When that happens, that’s the magic of theatre - where the audience’s imagination takes over rather than us, you know, bombarding them with scenic elements and special effects, etc.”

McKendrick directed Lend Me a Tenor for RDC several years ago, and has shared his experiences and talents via many teaching opportunities and events locally as well. He’s long had a desire to work with RDC’s theatre studies again.

“I also love working with this age group because they aren’t set in their ways and they certainly aren’t jaded.”

Exercise helps keep your body’s rhythms in check There’s no doubt that getting your heart pumping and blood moving through exercise has a long list of health benefits.

It controls weight, combats health conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep and more.

But many people don’t realize that lack of exercise can disrupt the body’s rhythms.

Each of our bodies has circadian rhythms – physical, mental and behavioural changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness. It’s why we naturally fall asleep during the night and rise during the daylight.

But our heartbeats, hormones, hunger, alertness, digestion, fatigue and other bodily functions are also influenced by our circadian rhythms.

According to a 2009 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, exercise may affect how and when we move, even when we aren’t exercising. The findings suggest exercise may help our bodies recognize the optimal times to move and be still.

Dr. Frank Scheer, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Medical Chronobiology Program at Brigham, oversaw the study along with colleagues.

They had a range of people from young adults to older people wear activity monitors for a week and tracked their movements as the volunteers stuck to their normal daily activities.

Results showed that when young people were still for a long time, they would then start moving, or if someone exerted themselves physically through exercise, they would take time to settle.

As noted in a New York Times article, “The young people’s bodies seemed to be somehow remembering and responding to what that body had just been doing, whether sitting or moving and then calculating a new, appropriate response – moving or sitting. In doing so, the re-

WHEELER searchers felt, the body created a healthy, dynamic circadian pattern.”

But the results weren’t the same for the older people in the study.

Their memory patterns were reduced drastically with age and their movements were more random with less movement during the day and more movement at night.

However, the researchers wanted to determine if these changes were caused solely by aging. Scheer and his colleagues, Kun Hu of Harvard University and Johanna Meijer of Leiden University, performed a new study this year. They monitored the movement patterns of mice ranging from six months to two years in age, which is equiva-

lent to human young adults and aging seniors.

For one month, they left a running wheel in the mice’s cage and found that the young mice often ran and developed patterns of peaks and valleys in their activity levels.

The older mice had similar peaks and valleys, but they were more random.

However, when the researchers removed the running wheel, all of the mice started showing more random patterns of movement, and the young mice had activity levels similar to the older mice. Once the researchers put the wheel back into the cage, all of the mice began exercising again and returned to healthy patterns of movements.

According to Scheer, the finding suggests that exercise affects daily movement patterns more than age does.

Although the researchers don’t know how exercise might affect the body’s internal clocks, the study does suggest that exercise

improves rhythms.

Experts also note that there’s an ideal time of day to exercise based on our circadian rhythms, but many disagree on exactly when that is.

Dr. Phyllis Zee of Northwestern University believes that the best time to work out is in the late afternoon because the body temperature is between one and two degrees warmer than in the morning, making muscles in the body more supple and lowering the risk of injury.

Working out when the body temperature is at its peak, which is usually about 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., can help people have optimal endurance, maximum flexibility and heightened injury resistance.

However, some health experts argue that working out in the morning will jump start burning calories for the day and help you sustain a higher metabolic rate later in the day. Research has also shown that morning exercisers have a greater degree of

consistency since afternoon and evening workouts are more likely to conflict with other responsibilities as the day progresses.

But everyone’s circadian rhythm is different, and although there may be an ideal time to prevent injury and achieve peak performance, the most important thing is to exercise consistently.

Whether you need that 6am morning workout to clear your head and get ready for your day, or you prefer to wait until the afternoon because you feel most awake, just make sure you get your workout in.

If you do prefer to exercise in the morning, make sure to warm up muscles that might be cool and tight from sleep to reduce the risk of injury.

Try exercising at different times of day and use your body clock as a guide to determine what works best for you.

Martin Luther King had a great dream: what’s mine on my 40th?

To dream of what might be is a good thing. Martin Luther King had a great dream but only some of his dream has been realized. The U.S. now has a black President, Jackie Robinson became a great baseball star and a friend of mine became Professor of Medicine at The Harvard Medical School. So, this week marks the 40th year I’ve written this column and I too have a dream.

But it’s far from reality.

For 40 years I’ve hoped that by passing along medical information I’ve helped people live a healthier lifestyle and longer life. I believe one of my most important messages is that high doses of Vitamin C and lysine can prevent and reverse atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries).

Like King, I’ve encountered major opposition.

But I’m convinced that several thousand milligrams (mg) of Vitamin C

JONES and lysine has kept me alive following a severe heart attack 17 years ago.

Cardiologists thought at that time, and still do, that I was a damn fool to deny cholesterol-lowering drugs (CLDs). Initially, I worried they might be right, as I had no definite proof that Vitamin C would work.

So why take such a gamble? Primarily my decision was due to my interview of Dr. Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize winner. He warned that, due to a genetic mutation, humans, unlike animals, lost the ability to manufacture Vitamin C. Pauling said we consumed enough Vitamin C,

one sixth of an orange, to prevent scurvy, but not enough to prevent heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. He knew that Vitamin C is needed in quantity to manufacture collagen, the glue that holds cells together. The lack of large amounts sets the stage for atherosclerosis.

At the time I was also seeing patients on CLDs complaining of several side-effects. And I believed that interfering with cholesterol metabolism was a dangerous decision.

Besides, pharmaceutical companies were making billions of dollars promoting CLDs and I believe they had seduced cardiologists with questionable science.

reverse hardening of arteries. His research convinced me that I made the right decision. Besides, C is a natural remedy that is safe, less expensive and effective. See the photos at www.docgiff.com Will the medical establishment ever look at this research? Highly unlikely.

During the past three years I’ve tried to get medical journals, university health publications and Deans of major medical schools to publish this information without success. Yet, no cardiologist has ever explained why this research is wrong.

So I continue to believe that history will prove that the use of CLDs is an unethical and dangerous medical experiment conducted by Big Pharma and the medical profession on

millions of unsuspecting people. And that ignoring new research will result in the needless death of untold numbers of people.

But why should I be right and all cardiologists wrong? My answer is, don’t just believe me.

Rather, research the internet and look for complications of CLDs. This shows increased risk of emotional problems, amnesia, cataracts, muscle pain, liver and kidney troubles. But what should get everyone’s attention, particularly cardiologists, is that those on CLDs have a 25 to 50% risk of Type 2 diabetes. And patients with diabetes have a 50% chance of dying of heart attack. So, in effect, CLDs are causing the very disease they’re supposed to prevent!

I know of no contraindication that prevents high doses of Vitamin C (4,000 – 6,000 mg and lysine (3,000 -4,000 milligrams) along with CLDs. These high doses in powder or capsules are available in Health Food Stores. But remember, I am not your doctor who must make such medical decisions for you.

So, like Martin Luther King I too can dream that good sense will eventually prevail. But so far the medical establishment maintains a closed mind on this research.

1 tbsp. olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 lb. extra lean ground beef 1/4 cup finely chopped Italian leaf parsley 1/4 cup fine bread crumbs 1 large egg, beaten 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. fresh ground pepper 1/2 cup orzo 8 cups chicken broth 1 cup, frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry In a small sauté pan over medium high heat, heat oil and sauté onion for four minutes. Add garlic and cook for two minutes more. Let cool slightly.

While meatballs are chilling, cook pasta according to package instructions in a small pot. In a large pot, bring broth to a boil and gently lower meatballs one at a time into broth.

Reduce heat to simmer and cook, uncovered for 20 minutes, add spinach for the last five minutes. You may need to simmer longer as the spinach can cool down the water temperature. Add pasta and adjust salt and pepper as needed.

SPORTS Quidditch Club gains momentum in Red Deer

You may know it as a fictional sport from J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular Harry Potter books. You may even be familiar with the rules of the game. But did you know it’s an actual sport that people actually play?

“The best way I can describe Quidditch is it’s rugby mixed with dodgeball mixed with handball,” said Jillian Staniec, the president of the Central Alberta Quidditch Club.

For those who may not know, the game of Quidditch is a sport that is played in the wizarding world of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. The game features two teams of players who fly around on broomsticks and attempt to score points by putting a ball through one of three giant golden hoops on either side of the field.

The rules of real-life Quidditch are adapted from that game, although with a few minor variations due to the obvious limitation that people can’t actually fly on broomsticks.

Each team is made up of three chasers, two beaters, a keeper and a seeker.

There are two ways to score points in Quidditch. The first is for the chasers to get the main ball, called the Quaffle, and put it through one of the opposing team’s hoops. The keeper’s job is to defend the hoops. Each time a chaser manages to put the Quaffle through one of the hoops, their team scores 10 points.

There are also two players on each team called beaters. Their job is to use dodgeballs (called bludgers) to hit opposing players. If a player is hit with a dodgeball, they are out of play until they go and touch one of their own hoops.

The last piece of the puzzle are the seekers, who are tasked with catching a ball called the Golden Snitch. This part of the game is a tricky one to describe. In the books, the Snitch is a small ball made of gold that flies around the field on its own wings. In reality, the role of the Snitch is played by a person. This person wears yellow and has a tennis ball in a sock dangling out of the back of their pants.

The seeker’s job is to chase this person down and grab the tennis ball. Whichever team’s seeker accomplishes this scores 30 points for their team.

There are a number of opportunities in Central Alberta for people to get involved in the sport. The Central Alberta Quidditch Club offers programs for athletes of all ages.

“For our kids’ program we go eight to 15 right now. In the spring we’d like to split that into eight to13 and 13-18 so that we can do no contact Kidditch and low contact youth Quidditch. Our adult program right now is 18 plus,” Staniec said, adding the Club does want to get a high school program started in the near future.

The Club’s season runs through spring and fall for the younger age groups. The adult program runs year-round.

“We generally do eight-week programs for the kids in fall and spring.”

They also have some space at the Collicutt Centre that they have been using to run adult drop-in programs, so anyone wishing to join in can pay the regular drop-in rate to participate.

There are also currently two competitive travel teams in the province. The Alberta Clippers, who compete out of Edmonton and Red Deer and the Calgary Muggles.

The Clippers recently won a tournament in Calgary. “We won a giant bear.

It was kind of awesome. It was the Octobear,” Staniec laughed.

“There’s a lot of nice, fun, silly things like that but at the same time, again, that was a full contact, serious tournament,” she added.

Reflecting on the new overtime changes in hockey Four months ago, the NHL’s Board of Governors approved a couple of changes to the league’s rules.

The first change was the expansion of the league’s video replay rules to include a coach’s challenge.

The other was a change in the overtime format.

Since the 2005 lockout, the overtime format has been a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime period followed by a continuous shootout.

This season, both the NHL and the Western Hockey League have changed the five-minute 4-on-4 to a five-minute 3-0n-3 period.

After witnessing a 3-0n-3 overtime period for the first time at last Saturday’s Red Deer Rebels game against the Calgary Hitmen, I have to say that it is easily one of the best ideas the hockey world has seen in the last 10 years.

The fact that only six players (plus two goalies) are on the ice at once gives those players a lot more room in which to maneuver. They have more time to make a play and more space in which to do it, leading to a much quicker style of play.

CORMIER The fact that teams have to choose between having two forwards and one defenseman or vice-versa, leads to more odd-man rushes, which, during a sudden-death overtime, can be the among the most exciting plays in the game.

I seriously don’t know if I’ve ever heard a WHL arena louder than the ENMAX Centrium was on Saturday night. It was an incredibly exciting five minutes that featured odd-man rushes going both ways and some beautiful saves on both sides.

So with all of this quick back-and-forth play, it begs the question - why do we still have shootouts at all?

Saturday’s game was awesome because of the overtime period.

Unfortunately, though, the game wasn’t decided

during that overtime period.

Although it looked like it would have been decided within the next two or three minutes, the action, which had been so pulse-poundingly exciting up until that point, ground to a halt as the teams retreated to their benches.

Then the teams started sending out player after

player to take their penalty shots and I swear that the noise level died right down.

Now don’t get me wrong the shootout is a very exciting part of the modern game, I just think that it has been overshadowed by this new 3-on-3 showdown, which keeps the pace up while doing basically the same job.

So, that being said, I

would like to see one of two things happen - either get rid of the shootout altogether and play 3-on-3 continuously until somebody scores or move to a 10-minute 3-on-3 frame before going to the shootout. This way, more games would be decided by a dramatic overtime goal as opposed to being decided in the shootout.

In my opinion, games

are always more exciting when they are decided in overtime anyways. When they end thanks to a puck crossing the goal line rather than on a save, as so many shootouts are.

After all, how memorable would the 2010 men’s hockey gold medal game had been if it had been decided during a shootout instead of the way it did? zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

Designing the perfect kitchen for style and functionality Many clients seek my advice on how to make their homes more beautiful and up to date.

Most people are focused on the aesthetics of a design project when functionality is often the issue that needs to be dealt with. I won’t discount aesthetics for even a second but often a different issue is presented and it is important for clients to realize that a renovation or building project may need to include a change of function of the property.

I have designed so many kitchens that I’m convinced I could do it in my sleep!

We spend the majority of our lives in our kitchens and they need to be functional and laid out in a convenient manner. New or old, poorly designed kitchens will cause frustration and dissatisfaction with your home on a daily basis. It is so important to make sure your kitchen is well laid out and represents what you need as a family to create harmony and a peaceful

WYSE existence, well before the pretty is chosen.

Families with small children will benefit from an open concept design where the kitchen and family spaces are combined and visible to one another.

I also prefer a kitchen facing the back yard of a home to allow diligent moms the opportunity to watch their kids at play even if they have to be in the kitchen for a certain amount of time.

A kitchen that is open with space for everyone allows full family participation in the meal preparation and clean up and allows those who aren’t involved in prep to be involved in other activities at the same time.

Consider the activities you might be performing simultaneously and make sure that the function of these activities can be carried out easily.

The appliances should be arranged in an easily accessed work triangle with enough room between them to still use each one without interruption from the other.

The dishwasher should be located in an area away from the prep space to allow both activities to occur at the same time which increases the efficiency of the kitchen. The items that you frequently access, whether it is pots and pans or pantry items, should be located conveniently to allow others to ‘grab and go’ and not constantly be under foot.

Counter space is extremely important but I have seen overkill on so many kitchen projects.

Islands which are too large and extended lengths of countertop designed

to give more space but laid out in such a way that the length of runway can never possibly be used! If your kitchen island is multi use (stove top/sink/eating bar) but you constantly have to walk around to access all areas you may find the function frustrating and time consuming. It is a wonderful item to have in a kitchen unless it inhibits the flow to a dining area or family space and if its space and storage isn’t usable without a considerable trek around a giant structure.

As the concept of kitchen design can be intimidating for many, I definitely recommend conferring with a qualified designer to help you create a successful road map to your dream kitchen. Once the functionality has been expertly created then the fun begins as you continue on to choose beautiful colours, tile finishes, granite and appliances.

Do you have a chocolate covered mortgage?

I have something shocking to tell you.

Ready? Canadian banks are a business like any other. Gasp and shock! This is nothing less than the truth.

They are mandated to produce profits and provide their shareholders with a dividend at the end of the year. This is accomplished by charging us service fees and interest on loans and in a wide variety of other ways. Given that the Canadian banking system is one of the strongest in the world which in turn benefits our economy as a whole, I certainly do not begrudge them their right to a profit. So why am I drawing attention to this you may ask? Well I will tell you.

As a mortgage professional I am often told that people would rather stay with their bank because their bank has been so good to them or because the family has been with that particular bank for generations and I am genuinely baffled by the prevalence of this attitude.

Of course your bank is good to you! You are a good person who pays your bills on time, has an account, or several, which generate a monthly service fee, and when you have borrowing needs you go to them and they lend you the funds at a reasonable rate. When it comes to a mortgage though the loyalty you feel to your bank and the assumption that they will take care of your best interests can come with a high cost if you don’t understand the fine print.

Let’s look at some of the things you need to be aware of shall we?

1. Best rates – I see this so often. Clients

PIKKERT come in with their bank’s best offer which is considerably higher than the going market rate only to be told the bank is able to match after they spend a pile of time rate shopping. Your mortgage rate determines your payment and affects your family’s budget. Make sure you get the best rate you can.

2. Prepayment penalties – in Canada there is no set standard as to how the banks and other mortgage providers have to calculate the penalty if you break your mortgage.

A mortgage is a contract after all. The banks have a right to expect a certain rate of return on the loan they have made to you but life happens and a major event can cause you to need to break your mortgage so make sure your penalty will be calculated reasonably. I have seen this amount vary from $4,200 to over $10,000 given the policy of the lender involved on the exact same mortgage amount and time remaining in the term.

Lenders are required to disclose the calculation to you but you need to be aware that some banks will calculate your penalty in a way that is most lucrative to them.

3. Collateral mortgages – many of the banks now register your mortgage dif-

ferently. Say your mortgage is $250,000 but your home is worth $300,000. In this instance the bank would register a charge on the title of the home for the higher amount.

The reason is so that if down the road you wish to get a home equity line of credit that you do not have to pay the legal fees again to do so. That can be a useful tool. The flip side is that this type of a mortgage is trickier to switch to a new lender at renewal. You may not be able to take advantage of today’s crazy low rates in a fee free switch if you have

this type of a mortgage.

Placing your mortgage with your own bank does not all of a sudden turn it into a chocolate covered treat or make it any more prestigious.

It can actually be very costly in the long run to choose one lender over another without educating yourself on their policies. Make sure you are choosing the best overall mortgage so that you are ready for anything life hits you with.
