Colour leader reveals colour trends for 2016 Submitted
Benjamin Moore, North America’s paint, colour and coatings brand, recently announced its highly anticipated 2016 Colour of the Year – Simply White OC-117. The company also unveiled Colour Trends 2016, a corresponding palette of 23 colours to illustrate how white works within the colour spectrum. “The colour white is transcendent, powerful and polarizing — it is either taken for granted or obsessed over,” said Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore creative director. “White is not just a design trend, it is a design essential. The popularity of white, the necessity of white, the mystique of white is quantifiable in our industry. Of the top 10 best-selling Benjamin Moore colours, variants of white occupy five spots. It was inevitable that we would ultimately recognize white as our Colour of the Year.” The Benjamin Moore Colour Studio forecasts colour trends after a year of research attending major industry shows around the world, while also taking cues from standouts in architecture, fashion, textiles, home furnishings and the arts. White transcends style, and is seen in traditional, transitional and modern interiors. The colour also presents attractive exterior looks for the home, from colonial to contemporary and virtually everything in between. The Colour Studio arrived at Simply White OC-117 after careful review of the company’s more than 250 white selections. According to the Colour Studio, it was the most neutral, level and constant in the various light sources used in today’s design environments. Creative ways to recycle your leaves Submitted
Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colourful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. • Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.

Winter is just around the corner, so they say. Have you got your seat belts fastened? Reading material organized? Comfy clothes ready? Who knows, this ride could be a long and cold one! This is a great time for gardeners. We still have six to eight weeks to work outdoors on our lawns and gardens, and when it is over we get six months (or so) off to reflect on the results of the past season and dream about the one ahead.
This is the best time of year to sow grass seed and lay sod. If your lawn was damaged due to the drought and heat of summer, now is the time to spread a three centimetre layer of Mark’s Choice Weed Free Lawn Soil over the brown and bald patches, then broadcast Home Gardener All-Purpose Premium Grass Seed Mix, and water it well. Fall, particularly late fall, is also the most important time to apply lawn fertilizer. When you grow plants for fruit and vegetable production, it is important to keep picking as the fruit becomes ripe to encourage the plant to keep producing. Feed the Birds. In the autumn, your perennial plants produce seeds, which birds eat. When the snow starts to fly these feeding sources are covered and inaccessible to birds looking for a meal. Unlike squirrels, birds generally do not hoard food: they search for it when they are hungry, which is most of the day. That is why it is important to feed the birds now. Let them get used to coming to your place for a meal so that when the snow arrives they are preconditioned to head in the direction of your yard. process by applying a low-nitrogen, highpotash fertilizer. A strong lawn in the fall results in hardier grass plants that bounce back in spring. You can also expect less snow mould, a faster green-up, and fewer weeds. Plan to NOT rake leaves from gardens The green living tissue under the bark of every tree is busy transporting moisture and nutrition to its roots. As this occurs, the true colour of leaves is revealed. This miracle of nature gives us the vibrant autumn colour that Canada is so famous for around the world. It is also a sign that the leaves will soon fall. This season, do yourself a favour and do not rake your leaves off of your garden. Instead, just leave them there to decay and become an integral part of the soil. On the surface of the soil, your leaves will provide valuable protection for perennial plants. Next spring, earthworms will come to the surface of the soil, gobble them up, and pull them down into the topsoil, converting them into nitrogen-rich earthworm castings. As a result, everything that grows will benefit. Let me be clear: you must rake the leaves off of your lawn or you will get brown patches come spring. I use a Mark’s Choice Flexible Spring Rake to ‘throw’ the leaves off of the lawn and into the garden. Or, you can add the leaves to a compost bin. Dig and divide. This is the best time of year to dig up many perennial plants and divide them into clumps that you can replant in other parts of your garden or give away to friends and neighbours. Hostas, monarda, veronica, daylilies, and a host of other ‘fleshy rooted’ perennial specimens lend themselves to division this time of year. Most are spring or summer flowering species. I use a clean, sharp Mark’s Choice Folding Gardening Knife to make an easy job of dividing perennial clumps. The permanent plants in your garden that die down to the ground each fall (herbaceous perennials) require a very simple strategy. For the most part, I do not do a thing. I let them stand upright in the garden all winter long, providing a modicum of winter interest. Seed heads attract a variety of songbirds, especially after the first snowfall when food foraging becomes difficult. However, I do use a pair of hand pruners to cut back the soft leaved plants like hostas, daylilies, and peonies. I make it a point to leave all of my ornamental grasses standing through the winter, and the flowers on my hydrangeas also. Again, there is winter interest in this stuff. When the ground is covered in a blanket of snow, it doesn’t take much to entertain a Canadian gardener. A few birds on my Miscanthus are better than nothing! Harvest. As you pick tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, and the like, you encourage the

The importance of clean gutters Submitted
Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure. The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners. Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in ad-
vance of the winter. Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur. • Leaks: Water will take the path of least resistance. When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground. It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth. It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests. • Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely. • Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests. Furthermore,
birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked. • Ice-damming: Left untreated, pooled water and leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process. • Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water from the hose afterward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This routine maintenance can save homeowners many headaches and prevent some very expensive repairs.

All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.
4. Backyard Care
Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems.

Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.
