Federal debate attract good crowd at Rimbey community centre

BY TREENA MIELKE As the federal election looms closer, politicians are gathering at community forums to express their views, encourage people to get out and vote and, above all, sway the public opinion in their favour.

A forum held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre last Tuesday attracted a good crowd, sparked lively conversation and gave politicians a chance to interact with the public.

Jeff Rock from the Liberal Party, Blaine Calkins, MP for the Conservatives and Doug Hart from the NDP who are running in the Red Deer Lacombe Constituency were front row and centre at the debate as they fielded questions from the audience and offered comments at the beginning and the end of the forum.

Reg Kreil started the questioning by inquiring about public transit and the lack of buses coming to Rimbey.

Hart said addressing infrastructure issues was open of the planks of the NDP platform, Calkins said a portion of the gas rebate refund goes into programs related to public transportation.

“I’m delighted to hear about public transportation in rural Alberta,” said Rock. He said the Liberals plan to increase funding for public transport.

He went on to say central Alberta is at a 7.5 unemployment rate and now is the time to kick start the economy and invest in jobs.

Calkins defended the government’s announcement in April that G3, which is partly owned

by Saudi Arabia, would buy 50.1 per cent of the Canadian Wheat Board for $250 million. The rest is to be kept in trust for grain farmers, but in seven years G3 has the option to buy back the units from farmers at market value.

Calkins said grain is now directly to market places from the field, the price of beef has never been better and pork prices are coming back.

But Hart said the wheat

board was sold for egg money and there are many more assets than have been listed.

“Farmers are still getting the same prices as what their grandfathers got,” he said.

Rock said rail systems are tied up with oil and gas and the rail system is failing the farmers.

“Selling our wheat board means the ultra rich are getting ultra richer,’ he said.

“I think Canada has to change our business model from a strip and ship, create value added jobs, not just in oil and gas, but in agricultural as well.”

Tax invasion is a problem that is being addressed, said Calkins, but noted there is more work that needs to be done.

“Multi billionaires are walking away scott free,” said Rock.

“The government must tighten loopholes and there needs to be greater accountability,” added Hart.

Calkins defended his government’s position on research noting that billions of dollars has been spent on scientific research.

But the other politicians disagreed.

“The Harper government has muzzled scientists.

Lacombe Research Station could be next on the chopping block,” said Rock.

“Research is the pursuit of truth and cutting funds for research has not benefited the country, added Hart.

Irene Lovell questioned Calkins about cuts to the CBC. “I have been listening to CBC for 60 years and feel that I have learned enough to have a virtual university degree,” she said.

However Calkins said CBC has internal financial issues and the government has not cut funding.

“CBC is a real asset for us as Canadians,” said Rock.

In his closing comments Rock said he considered Calkins and Hart to be his colleagues, not his opponents.

“We are all trying to earn your votes,” he said. “We are all investing in the future and I still believe better is possible. I fully believe we can do better together.

“We are the envy of our peer nations,” said Calkins. What are the big questions? Steven Harper will get those questions right.”

“I want to make the best decisions for the citizens,” said Hart. “I don’t want to be a white crayon on a white page and not make any difference.”

The sun-drenched days of autumn have been even more achingly beautiful and sun-drenched than usual this year.

It’s like living in the middle of a picture perfect postcard.

Of course, in the midst of these crisp days where colours like old gold and tangerine and blood red flaunt themselves shamelessly beneath a sky so blue it hurts your eyes, some of us are confined to the indoors.

How fair is that?

I was having coffee with my daughters the other day, enjoying the little oasis in a day where the hours seem to disappear quicker than a genie in the bottle. I smiled at them, just happy, but they scowled back at me because they were not, apparently, in the same frame of mind.

Summer is over, they moaned. School’s back in, it’s almost Halloween and we are missing this beau-

share a moment of delicious laughter enjoying the fact that we are all here together and the sun is streaming through the window, warming our bodies and our souls, and life is once again, simple and good.

As I drove home later, squinting my eyes against the sun that had apparently moved west right along with me, I contemplated the facts of life we had manage to figure out during our little coffee break.

The rules of the school yard always seem to remain intact in some form or another, whether you are competing in a blood sport like hockey or politics or simply an every day Joe public type person.

Play nice. Share. Be kind.

Remember the golden rule.

I see in my mind’s eye the schoolrooms and chalkboards of my school days, all black and white and orderly, with no delete button to erase or change the rules according to race, religion or finances.

The rules were just as black and white as the chalkboard!

We all knew, the children of the ‘50s and ‘60s, the days before iPhones and iPads and cell phones and laptops and white boards and smart boards, what the rules were.

You started the day by saying The Lord’s prayer. You listened to your teacher. The strap was not only visible in the classroom. It was used.

Parents sided with the teacher, and there wasn’t

really any youth justice type committees to turn to if you felt justice was not being doled out appropriately and you were on your own to suffer the consequences of your actions.

Despite all those rules that existed in the black and white chalkboard school days that etched out my childhood, it was fun being a kid.

I smile as I remember and then my mind comes back to the present and the dazzling colours of fall. For the millionth time I wish I could paint enough word pictures to describe such beauty.

I settle for awesome which is kind of lame, but, sadly, I’m already home and I have to make supper!

Acts of kindness may not define what makes a good person

My girls carry on relentlessly, enjoying their own misery immensely while they sip their skinny lattes and discreetly sneak little pieces of my cookie until there is nothing left but crumbs.

“I hope the kids follow the rules and don’t pick on us,” they whined. “I hope we get a little longer for lunch. I hope there are lots of adults on supervision at recess.”

“I’m sure they will, girls,” I say, soothingly. “After all, you are the teachers.”

We look at each other and

Over the last couple of weeks I performed three separate acts of kindness.

Though, it wasn’t like I was a bad person every other instance outside of those isolated good deeds.

I suspect I am becoming more conscience of my everyday actions because of

the philosophy class lectures, on society and values that I attend at Red Deer College.

The first good act of kindness I performed was helping a student boost their vehicle. I was approaching the RDC west parking lot and noticed that someone had the hood up on their car and struggled to find the spot to secure the hood prop rod. I also noticed it was a Ford car. Prior to leaving a career as an automotive technician, I amassed an abundance of experience fixing Fords. I didn’t have booster cables in my truck, but I managed to flag down a tow truck driver (that was towing away a different vehicle). The tow truck driver lent me his boost-

er pack; I rushed back to the stranded student and boosted the car.

In the second situation I assisted a student find the book store on campus. As I was leaving the RDC library and overheard a librarian try to explain to a student that the library didn’t sell textbooks—the bookstore did. I approached the student and asked him to follow me; I was going to walk by the bookstore.

The student was grateful— despite being lead to the (overpriced) bookstore.

In my third good deed I assisted a pair of students locate the place to purchase a bus pass. The halls at RDC were relatively quiet at the time; and the pair (that looked young enough to just have grad-

uated high school) caught me in the hall. I’ve owned more vehicles than I have bus passes in my life; and I suspect this youthful pair thought I was the janitor or something. I led the pair to a posting that explained where bus passes could be bought and further guided them to the appropriate offices. My third act of kindness was completed and I felt like a good person.

However, my philosophy lectures lead me to second guess my intentions and start analyzing my actions.

I started to think that in all of the three instances I was simply exerting my knowledge (no matter how quaint) over another person: my knowledge of cars, the location of the

bookstore, and the location of the office to buy a bus pass.

So one morning before attending class I decided to do something selfless—I brought a box of donuts to the security desk for all the campus watchmen. I figured I was actually accomplishing a legitimate good deed; and I didn’t feel like I was displaying any superior knowledge over anyone. Then I realized that I may playing up the age old stereotype that police like donuts. Thanks to my philosophy class I’m no longer sure I’m a good person; but at least a couple people made it home, some books found their way into some eager hands, and a few people didn’t go hungry.

But, even as the winds of change continue to blow, each and every graduate from Rimbey Junior High School came back to attend the graduation ceremonies held Sept.

26 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, a true testament to their strong values of education and community.

During the ceremonies several guest speakers took a few moments to offer their congratulations and a brief message.

Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw also congratulated the grads.

MLA Jason Nixon jokingly told the students it was time to address the elephant in the room.

On a more sober note, he encouraged the grads to enjoy their night, stay safe and celebrate their accomplishments.

Dr. Larry Jacobs, superintendent of Wolf Creek Public Schools also offered his congratulations, noting he was a former grad of Rimbey High School.

Valedictorian Trevor Weenink gave an inspirational speech, spiked with humour and sprinkled with lots of ‘remember whens.’

After thanking his parents, he stressed that his friends helped him get through high school.

“Having friends made school easier,” he said. “It was fun.”

He also thanked his teachers for their encouragement and support throughout his high school years.

He said looking back on high school should not be a sad thing, calling again on the words of Dr. Seuss for inspiration.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

“It’s just one more episode of Netflex,” he said.

“Keep your friends close, keep smiles on your faces.”

working for eight weeks at the pharmacy at the Rimbey Hospital. They will graduate from university in June of next year and the time spent in Rimbey is part of their practicum.

Both Van De Walle and LeBeau have completed other practicums, but the time spent at the pharmacy at the Rimbey Hospital has provided the most responsibility, they said.

While working at the hospital, the students are living with Ron and Donna Hansen on their farm near Bentley. They are enjoying farm life and are grateful for the kindness extended to them by the Hansens.

“It’s awesome,” said LeBeau. “It’s been a great experience,” added Van De Walle.

Roper said he enjoys doing House Tours and is looking forward to coming to Rimbey.

“I really have a good time, and I hope they (the audience) does too,” he said.

“I have lots of energy and I write all kinds of stuff.

I like playing outside the box,” he said.

The proceeds from a ninetrack solo CD he will have on hand in Rimbey will go to the Our Place Charity, a charity in Victoria for the homeless. He is selling the CD for $6.17 which is what he says is the cost of feeding the homeless for a day.

Before coming to Rimbey he will be spending time in Whitehorse, Yukon. His song Yukon Girl will, no doubt, be a hit on that tour.

Council endorses new logo for Town of Rimbey

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey council has given the green light to a new logo for the town.

At its regular meeting, Monday councilors briefly discussed changes to the logo before giving it their stamp of approval.

The final design shows the word ‘Rimbey’ written in flowing blue letters.

Before the word Rimbey, there is a design depicting a highway curving towards the name which is to suggest all roads lead to Rimbey. A green curve indicates agriculture is strong in the area.

Council approved a suggestion made by Melvin Durand to change the oil drop above the second letter in the word Rimbey to the color black was given

the nod by council.

Council also agreed to have Craig Oliver from amazing ideas (the company who is designing the town’s website) to change the letter ‘b’ so it wouldn’t be mistaken for a ‘6’.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said a new logo is needed.

“What we’re trying to tell people is that Rimbey is open for business,” said Pankiw.

Interim CAO Donna Tona said the logo should convey a message.

“What do we want to attract?” she said. “Right now we’re attracting nothing.” Why would people want to come here?”

She noted during discussions regarding the town’s new website it has become apparent the first thing the public sees in the

town logo.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said changing the town’s logo is a big decision.

“It shows how we are going to present Rimbey,” he said.

Council agreed to present Pas Ka Poo Park with the previous town logo.

Rimbey town council has endorsed a new logo for the town. The previous logo will be donated to Pas Ka Poo Park.

Family organizes blood drive to honour life of Ponoka student

The untimely death of Ponoka student Taylor Leverick in a motor vehicle accident in March has his family looking to honour his life through a blood drive.

The event is called Taylor’s Drive, named by Leverick’s brother Thomas, and is meant to highlight his love of driving.

Leverick’s Aunt Shelley McFadden said he was given several pints of blood before his passing on March 15 and the family had valuable time to say their farewells.

To remember Leverick, and to recognize the importance of that donated blood, the family is working with Canadian Blood Services in Ponoka and Rimbey with 100 spots available for blood donours.

“What people gave him, we want to give to others,” said McFadden. Ponoka’s community blood drive is set for Monday, Sept. 28 and for Rimbey the date is set for Monday, Oct. 26.

McFadden said it gives the family a goal to focus on while they continue to deal with his loss. “He was 16 but he had lived such a full life.

He was such a kind, caring soul,” said McFadden.

Eventually, the family would like to create a special blood donour day specifically in memory of Leverick but working with Canadian Blood Services scheduled dates gave the family a chance to start honouring his life.

Bentley school gains younger students

BY JUNE NORVILA The first meeting of the Bentley School Parent Council for this school term was held on September 21. There was some good news to share.

Letters had been received from both Premier Notley and Mr. David Eggen, Minister of Education, stating that there is no viability study being done of the Bentley high school and that the Bentley School was in no danger of closing. Both letters thanked people who had written letters of concern about the possible closure of the Bentley High School.

Because at present there is no need to worry about losing the local high school, the letter writing campaign started last year defending

the school has been suspended for now.

Enrollment increased in elementary and junior high grades but dropped in high school.

This term so far there are 329 students enrolled in Kindergarten to grade 12 with 54 more in Pre-Kindergarten. There are 33 in Kindergarten, one 162 in grades 1-6, 81 in grades 7-9, and 53 in grades 10-12. Numbers can fluctuate.

Breakfast and lunch programs continue for those students that need it, but because of the tight budget, fundraising ideas are being explored to help fund field trips.

On September 18 the Welcome Back Breakfast raised almost $920.

On the same day almost $5,000 was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Six staff from last year left: Brenda Von Kuster, Michael Sonnenberg, Pam Stephenson, Scott Maetche, Kaylee Sage, and Joe Hackett.

Three new enthusiastic members have joined the staff including Kyle Brown, Lauren Charanduk and Jackie Shukin who will all mainly teach grade 9-12.

There are now as many educational assistants as teachers in the school.

New courses being offered include French and Spanish.

Flute/recorder lessons are being offered by Marla Kolybaba.

Some other options offered at the high school level on Tuesday afternoons include fine arts, musical theatre, guitar lessons, and building construction.

Bentley minor hockey icing four teams

BY JUNE NORVILA It was considered “the best turnout in a long time” at the Bentley Minor Hockey (BMH) fall Annual General Meeting and Registration Night on September 8.

The season should start earlier than usual this year as the ice is scheduled to be going in a few weeks earlier than usual under the direction of a new ice maker Graham Parsons from Sylvan Lake.

This season Bentley Minor Hockey will be icing four teams: one Initiation team for 5-6 year olds, two Novice Teams for the 7-8 year olds, and a PeeWee team for 11-12 year olds

Most Bentley Atom/Bantam players will be playing in either Rimbey or Sylvan Lake and one on a Red Deer AAA Bantam team.

BMH will be hosting a fundraising event December 5 with a dinner, live auction and entertainment.

Fire rodeo and movie to be held in AGRIM

BY TREENA MIELKE The Rimbey Fire Department and The Agricultural Society are combining their efforts to provide the community with some great family fun.

The Minions and fire rodeo is to begin on Oct. 8 at the Rimbey Ag Centre and will include activities for the entire family.

The fun is to begin at 4 p.m. The younger set might want to take their chances mutton busting or do their best to try their hand at sinking someone sitting on a dunk tank which will be set up.

And, of course, there will be opportunities to sit in the fire trucks, meet the firefighters and enjoy hotdog or a hamburger from the concession. Popcorn will be available as well.

At 7 p.m. the movie Minions will be shown.

Deputy fire chief Bonnie Grundy said the fire department wanted to host

a family event during fire prevention week and teaming up with the ag society was a great way to do so.

“We encourage everyone to come out and support us and the ag society,” she said.

Treasurer of the ag society, Shirley Ingram said the society plans to use their share of the proceeds to purchase a defibrillator for the new ag centre.

Ingram also encouraged everyone to come out and have a good time at the family fun event.

Rimbey Junior/Senior High School’s graduation and awards night was held Sept. 26 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

Principal Tim Lekas who was the master of ceremonies for the award ceremonies began the presentations by thanking the sponsors for supporting the students and recognizing their academic and personal successes.

The first award of the evening was the Grade 9 Award presented to the student with the highest average of all Grade 9 subjects, and is sponsored by the Rimbey Junior High School Student’s Association. The award was presented by Mr. Froehlick to Triana Hohn.

The Grade 10 award presented to the student with the highest average of English 10-1, Social Studies 10-1, Science 10 and one other Grade 10 subject is sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion Auxillary The award was presented by Grace Engelsen and went Courtney Holtkamp.

The Grade 11 award presented to the student with the highest average of English 20-1 and four of the following courses: Social Studies 20-1, Math 20 Pure, Chemistry 20, Biology 20, Physics 20 and French 20 is sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. The award was presented by Eric Hornsey and went to Ben Trenson.
