Fallen military members honoured in weekend ceremony Dignitaries on hand as special monument is unveiled at Red Deer Airport

ast Saturday a ceremony was held in the parking lot of the Red Deer Airport to dedicate a monument in honour of 44 members of various national air forces and one member of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) who died while training at Central Alberta air bases during and since WWII. Various dignitaries were on hand for the event including Red Deer County councillors and members of the military, among others.

The monument is located underneath the Harvard aircraft that is stationed in the parking lot at the Red Deer Airport.

The various groups raised $7,000 for the monument.

In 1941 air bases were established at Penhold and Bowden (now the federal prison) to train pilots for the war effort.

Both bases were operated by the Royal Air Force and trained mainly British airmen until 1944. Following the war, a fly training case, using Harvard aircraft was established at Penhold (1951-1965) for NATO member countries.

The monument also commemorates a member of the CASARA who died while flying out of the Red Deer Airport.

CASARA is a national voluntary civilian search and rescue organization funded by the Department of National Defence.

The creation of the monument and the dedication ceremony has been a collaborative effort by members of four local aviation groups - the Red Deer Flying Club/ COPA92, CASARA, the Harvard Historical Society and 703 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association.

Jim Thoreson, president of the Red Deer Flying Club, said the monument has been in the works for about a year and a half and was inspired by a fellow pilot who lost his life in a training mission in 2008.

“CASARA works for the military and they have a large monument in Winnipeg at the headquarters and people killed in search and rescue can get their name on it. When our pilot got killed in 2008, Herluf Nielsen, I tried to get his name on it, however, the criteria for getting your name on there is that you have to be killed during actual search and rescue mission - not a training exercise,” said Thoreson. “He didn’t qualify to go on that monument and we were talking about it one day and someone said there’s been a lot of people killed here while they were training for the war and there is nothing here to commemorate them. We thought we would make something here at the airport because this was a training base and that got it all started.”

REMEMBERING - A new memorial was unveiled at the Red Deer Airport this past weekend. The memorial commemorated 44 soldiers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom who died while training at CFB Penhold during the Second World War and the Cold Zachary Cormier/Red Deer Express War. It also bears the name of Herluf Nielsen of the Civil Air Search and Rescue team whose plane crashed in 2008.

Nielsen was killed in 2008 while conducting a night training exercise. After the group finished up around 10 p.m., Nielsen left the Red Deer Airport and headed to Innisfail where he was going to leave his plane.

“He hit some weather and went down,” said Thoreson, who was one of the pilots working with him at the time of his death.

The Nielsen family was also on hand for the unveiling of the monument and Thoreson said they were honoured.

“They are quite pleased to see this going ahead and they were excited to take part in it.”

Thoreson added the unveiling of the monument is of significance to the Central Alberta community.

“I think people need to remember why we are walking around free. We had all of these pilots fighting the Nazis and then in the Cold War we had our people ready to battle as needed. From Herluf’s side of it, when we get someone lost or downed

in a plane, someone has to go find them,” he said.

The land for the air base was purchased by the federal government in 1939 and they had started building runways and the government realized a war was coming so hangars were starting to be built as well in the 1940s. The base started out as a manning depot and later on when the government came into agreement with supporting the war, it turned into an air force base. At that time RAF took it over and it became known as No. 36 Service Flying Training School between 1941-1943.

In 1941, 1,400-plus pilots trained at the base in Penhold during WWII. After the war, the air base became a storage facility. In 1956, it became a NATO training base which was then called No. 4 Flight Training School.

Gary Hillman, owner of Hillman Air, said given the base’s history, the importance of the monument is even greater.

ognize the men who dedicated their lives to the peace of the countries during the war,” said Hillman. “They signed a blank cheque with their life basically to come over here and to take training so that they could go back and fight for the freedom of their countries. Some of them died while they were doing the training and that is who we are recognizing - those who came with the intention of training and who died while they were training. This is something that has been missed so we are trying to pick it up and do something for these men at this time.”

Meanwhile, for Thoreson it has been rewarding to see the monument come to fruition.

“It has been a long, hard task and it took a lot of research - we had to go through the archives to make sure we had all the names right and we didn’t want to miss anybody. We had a real great dedicated bunch of people working with us. It is great to see it all finished.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Local candidates face off in federal election forum

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Issues regarding health care, transparency, the price of oil and gas, job loss and the TransPacific Partnership agreement were among the topics that were prominent at the federal election forum held in Red Deer at the Memorial Centre.

Candidates for the Red DeerMountainview riding and the Red Deer-Lacombe riding were on hand for Monday night’s forum.

The country’s economy, low oil prices and job loss were issues that concerned those attending the forum.

Earl Dreeshen, current MP and Conservative candidate for Red Deer-Mountainview said over the course of his campaign he has heard from constituents that the importance of a strong economy is a high priority.

“It’s often the NDP has said during the campaign that the NDP is not anti-oil, well ladies and gentlemen let’s be perfectly clear, the actions of the NDP speak louder than the words.”

Doug Hart, NDP candidate for Red Deer-Lacombe said Canada does not control the world price of oil. “World prices in oil have dropped 60 per cent in the last year. We don’t control world prices and people aren’t unemployed because the provincial

government raised corporate taxes, they’re unemployed because of the 60 per cent decline in the price of oil per barrel.

What we need to do is find other ways to turn that oil into jobs.”

Chandra Kastern, liberal candidate for Red Deer-Mountainview said she is hearing concern from local constituents.

“In terms of what I have heard from people in my riding is job security and what they’re going to do next because they are still waiting for that call to go back to work. I think this is a threepronged approach. I think there is some triage that needs to happen. There needs to be retraining for people who have not been able to go back to work yet so that they are able to work.”

Paul Harris, NDP candidate for Red Deer-Mountainview, said Canada must support all sectors, oil and gas included.

“One hundred years ago we did not have oil - our economy was not driven by oil. One hundred years from now it will be driven by something else, perhaps oil and gas will be part of that mix. In the in-between stages we need to find ways to support all sectors and how do we gracefully transition from one to another? These are innovation strategies that we have to look at. We need to support all the other industries out there, not just oil and gas.”

Jeff Rock, liberal candidate for Red Deer-Lacombe, said the current government has failed when it comes to oil and gas.

“It is the responsibility of a government to get oil and gas to market and if you use that as a measuring stick, Stephen Harper has failed. We need to take the environment and the economy seriously and not see them as enemies. The oil and gas industry and the environmentalists are not enemies - they have to work together for solutions.”

Blaine Calkins, current MP and Conservative candidate for Red Deer-Lacombe, said ensuring pipelines are built is key.

“I’ve stated that west is best, east is great and Keystone is good as well. We know very well the economic benefits of having a very strong oil and gas sector in Alberta. If I wanted to empower my government here in the province of Alberta to have more money from the resources that we have - the best thing I can do is ensure the pipelines get built from the west coast to the east coast and that the international market price and the North American market price come closer together to ensure Albertans get the fair value for the energy that we have here.”

One audience member asked what the candidates thought of the newly released Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement which

would see a new deal made that would eliminate or reduce tariffs on many goods and services and also open up the dairy and auto markets. Although not fully released, the agreement would have to be ratified by the governments of all 12 countries involved to come into effect.

Harris said the lack of consultation regarding the agreement is a concern for him.

“For me the lack of consultations with the sectors is the thing that I dislike about it the most. I think it’s very important that we always consult the public and the sectors involved before we get into these trade agreements. This to me is the transparency that is lacked by the current government.”

Calkins said if approved, the TPP would open up a lot of opportunities for Canada.

“What I really like about the TPP is that if this is ratified and concluded, Canada will now have access to over 60 per cent of the world’s GDP - 800 million new customers. We have great products and services in Canada.

We have one of the most talented work forces and the best entrepreneurs in the world and we’re at the leading edge when it comes to science, technology and development. What we need is market access. I see this as a positive thing.”

Rock said not enough infor-

mation is known about the TPP at this point. “Ten years ago the Conservative party came to power based on one major promise and that was transparency. And what we have seen with the TPP is just another example in a long list of completely nontransparent negotiations on our behalf. I haven’t got a clue what is in it when it was released at the last minute, two weeks to the day of an election.

I am concerned it will make the rich richer and ship middle class jobs abroad.”

The health care system was also a topic of discussion and candidates were asked how they would protect health care in the country. Hart said there are many things the NDP would do to improve the system.

“We would sign a new health care accord with the provinces, it’s in our platform. We would also create 7,000 positions for new health professionals including doctors and why wouldn’t we fund the education for rural students to be doctors in rural communities rather than hiring people from South Africa and taking away their doctors?

We would plan a national pharmacare program, mental health programs for youth, a national senior’s strategy and affordable housing is an important element as well.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Education minister visits City

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Education Minister David Eggen was in Red Deer this past Monday to visit with local school boards.

Eggen began touring the province about three weeks ago and as of Monday, he had met with 39 different school boards.

“It’s been intense but very productive.

These are the individuals on the ground delivering education to our students and I can learn a tremendous amount from them to help to focus public money to ensure we get the best result for all kids,” he said.

Eggen added with the upcoming provincial budget later this month, the government took the pressure down for school boards in particular.

“We restored the funding that the previous government was taking away on enrolment and then also I found the money to build the schools that were on the capital budget. Reducing the anxiety but certainly with the budget coming up, I’ve let people know that we are focusing on our core services - on education and health care - but certainly everyone is

looking for efficiencies.”

He added schools in the Red Deer region are experiencing tremendous growth.

“This is a real centre of growth throughout the province and certainly we want to make sure that we meet the needs of all students through both funding and capital projects as well,” said Eggen. “Everyone is looking forward to the school year but everyone is keeping a mindful eye on the budget because I need everyone to look for every efficiency that we can.”

In terms of the challenges he is hearing a diversity of needs.

“In terms of Red Deer proper, English as a second language is (more prominent) and also more special needs students at younger ages which I think is important for us to identify at a young age - if students have disabilities or so forth - to focus in on that,” said Eggen. “Everyone also needs money for transportation that’s a big one - busing through the rural areas - some of the adjacent areas can be as big as 400 square kilometres which is like a small European country to provide busing for every day.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION Ensuring our children are always safe and protected October marks Child Abuse Prevention Month.

It is hard to imagine that any child is ever abused, but unfortunately it is a reality.

According to the Province of Alberta, abuse falls into many categories including neglect which is defined as any lack of care that causes serious harm to a child’s development or endangers a child in any way.

Failure to meet the child’s day-to-day physical needs includes not providing adequate nutrition, clothing, shelter or health care; appropriate supervision and protection from harm.

Emotional neglect is not meeting the child’s ongoing emotional needs for affection or sense of belonging.

Emotional abuse is verbal attacks on a sense of self, repeated humiliation or rejection.

Exposure to violence, drugs, alcohol abuse or severe conflict in the home, forced isolation, restraint or causing a child to be afraid much of the time may also cause emotional harm.

Physical abuse is the intentional use of force on any part of a child’s body that results in injuries.

It may be a single incident or a series or pattern of incidents.

Sexual abuse is the exposure of a child to sexual contact, activity or behaviour. It includes any sexual touching, intercourse or exploitation and can be perpetrated by anyone including a parent or guardian, caregiver, extended family, family member, neighbour or stranger.

There are many things that can contribute to child abuse including stress, inadequate parenting skills, lack of positive parent/child involvement, criminal or mental health issues, many children to care for or poverty are all factors that can lead to child abuse.

Family violence, lack of family supports, history of child abuse and alcohol and drug abuse can also be contributors to child abuse.

There are also signs that a child may be neglected or abused.

A child who is continually hungry, dirty or unsuitably dressed for the weather.

A young child who is often left alone or inadequately supervised; a child who is extremely withdrawn or who is usually aggressive to other people; a child who has unexplained bruises or injuries; a child who shows knowledge of sexual matters beyond their age of development or who exhibits sexualized behaviour around adults or other children and a child who runs away from home or who does not want to be at home.

There are a number of steps to take should a child choose to open up about their abusive circumstances.

First of all, listen and allow the child to relay what happened in his or her own words, do not ask leading questions, remain calm and neutral and do not overreact or show horror or anger or any other reaction that would lead the child to believe the abuse was his or her fault.

Support or acknowledge the child’s feelings and reassure the child and tell them that you believe what you have heard.

Also, comfort the child by saying that it was a good thing for him or her to tell you and assure the child that you will do

something to help.

It’s also important to not attempt to intervene on your own but to contact your local child and family services office or call the child abuse hotline at 1-800-387KIDS. Once a report is made, the information provided by the caller will be assessed to determine if the child or the family is truly in need of assistance and what supports might be to address their needs.

The family may be referred to community supports, receive services or supports in their home or the child may need to be placed out of the home while supports are being provided.

It is important to encourage children to be open about any of these kinds of experiences and to never keep them to themselves.

Children are the community’s future and they need to be nurtured and protected.

We as a community have a responsibility to make sure our children are safe and grow up in the best circumstances possible.

Do you have concerns your child will become a pushover?

A mom recently shared her concern with me about her child being a ‘pushover.’

She said that even though she was just seven years old, she was already seeing her daughter as more of a follower than a leader and looking towards the future, worried her daughter might be willing to bend over backwards to please a peer or may even do something against her will just to make someone else happy.

She wanted reassurance that this was not fixed for life and asked me for advice on how to turn things around.

We talked about some of her specific concerns such as her daughter giving special items away to peers and she asked if I

DIMERMAN thought this may be her daughter’s way of winning them over or buying their attention.

She expressed confusion as to why this may be since she and her husband doted on their child and gave her lots of their time and attention.

I suggested a reframe: perhaps, I said, it was because her child was so used to getting their attention and unconditional love that she couldn’t understand why she might

not be getting the same from her peers.

I recommended, of course, that they not withdraw their attention or love, but that this, combined with a child’s desire to belong and feel included in her peer group, along with her generous nature, may be propelling her to behave as she was.

As most parents do, this mom also expressed concern about what might happen when her child grew older - even into teenage hood - and continued to be a ‘pushover’.

What, she asked, might happen when her child was introduced to drugs or alcohol?

What might happen if she followed the cool kids who weren’t the best influence?

I reassured the mom that she had at least the next five or six years to monitor the situation and continue to guide her child towards making wise decisions and choices.

I recommended that she read children’s books that complemented the message she was working to deliver - those that allowed her child to project herself onto the pages that offered stories about one child following another down the wrong path and the consequences of doing so.

In doing my own research, I found it difficult to find a specific title for a seven year old but did come across a book titled Peer Pressure: Deal With it Without Losing Your Cool (Slavens, Shannon) which

I thought would be a good book for the mom to review and parts of which to share with her child.

I also suggested rather than lecturing or admonishing her daughter for behaviour that triggered this mom’s worst fear of her being taken advantage of by others, that she encourage more of the behaviours she hoped to see by making comments such as, “I love how you stood up for what you believed in”.

Finally, I asked the mom about her parenting style and expectations. I shared that despite her best intentions, her parenting style may actually be contrary to what she was trying to instill in her child.

What I mean by this is: if you want your child

to become a leader and think for him or herself, don’t fret that she has “a mind of her own” or that he doesn’t like to be told what to do.

Of course, there need to be parental limits and boundaries set, but as much as possible, encouraging independent thought, asking questions that allow your child to learn from his experience and the behaviour of others may be some ways in which to encourage a child to feel capable of making good decisions and not following others blindly or becoming a pushover.

POLICE BRIEFS YOUTH ARRESTED AFTER FIREARMS COMPLAINT At 11:20 a.m. on Sept.

30th Red Deer RCMP received a report of five male youth in a small car, pointing a firearm at

people as they drove by. Red Deer City RCMP responded quickly and located the suspect vehicle a short time later.

After conducting a traffic stop RCMP located a replica firearm. The five male youth are

TRIAL SET FOR OFFICER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT Const. Eric Pomerleau, who was charged with four assault-related offenses, has had two trial dates set for next year.

Pomerleau was charged in relation to an incident in 2012 in which he was allegedly seen on a video throwing a teen to the floor in the cellblock at the Red Deer Detachment. He has been charged with assault with a weapon (pepper spray), assault causing bodily harm

and common assault.

A trial has been set for May 10th and 11th on these charges.

Pomerleau has also been charged with assault after an incident more than two years ago.

Pomerleau was allegedly caught on video punching and throwing a man to the floor after the man was arrested for allegedly drinking and driving.

A trial has been set for June 1st and 2nd on these matters.

Pomerleau is currently on administrative duties with the RCMP.

MAN CHARGED AFTER FLEEING FROM POLICE On Sept. 30th at 3:30 p.m., plain clothes members of the Red Deer RCMP were attempting to affect an arrest of an adult male who was travelling in a vehicle withing the City limits. Once the vehicle was stopped and during the arrest, the two occupants of the vehicle resisted police attempts to affect the arrest and attempted

to get away from police. In the interests of public safety to prevent the suspects from putting the public at risk, the RCMP disabled the suspect vehicle by using a firearm to flatten a tire.

This was successful and the two suspects were taken into custody. Two RCMP members sustained mild non-life threatening injury during the arrest, not related to the discharge of the firearm, and have been treated at hospital. No other persons

were injured during this event, and the public was not placed at any risk throughout.

Mark Gommerud, 33, of Red Deer, has been charged with seven counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, proceeds of crime under $5,000, evading policing, dangerous driving, obstruction, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (a Tazer flash light) and breach of a recognizance.

Region partners together for tourism vision

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS A comprehensive and in-depth Destination Management Plan (DMP) was introduced to nearly 80 various community stakeholders last week as the proposed foundation for a regional tourism plan in Central Alberta.

Realizing Our Potential - Central Alberta’s Tourism Destination Management Plan could be adopted as the official 10-year plan to boost tourism in Central Alberta. It was broken down into a number of categories that included planning strategies, a destination analysis and a plan to begin moving forward in this industry.

The presentation was carried by Justin Ellis, a consultant with Stantec and Dr. Eugene Thomilson, a senior advisor with Left Coast Insights - Tourism Development Consulting and assistant professor, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Royal Roads University.

“We need to understand how everything fits together for things to work properly.

We weren’t going to just go in and develop a marketing plan - we needed to have something that would work for all of the stakeholders - something that everyone could be a part of,” Thomilson said.

“We want collaboration, cooperation and participation by all of the stakeholders in the process.”

The DMP covers a region from Clearwater County west of Rocky Mountain House, east into Lacombe County near Buffalo Lake. The plan extends from the Olds region north to Ponoka.

The main goal of the plan is to develop a unified, adaptable and branded image of Central Alberta where tourism could thrive. The plan explored the possibilities of tourism that come from natural geography, historical resources, utilizing tourism hubs to connect surrounding municipalities and more.

According to the DMP, the region provides access to six main categories of tourism: nature, adventure and ecotourism, agriculture and culinary tourism, festivals, events and sport tourism, Aboriginal tourism, cultural, heritage and arts tourism and business events.

“There is a lot of potential for our visitors. We discovered that there are 88 different provincial parks and protected areas in the region. We want to look at potential barriers to tourism development or expansion, as well as how some of how our environmentally significant areas can also be an attraction,” explained Ellis.

“Almost 30 per cent of the region is what’s called an environmentally significant area, of different classes from internationally to provincially significant.

That’s a good news story, in terms of being able to market, sell and develop experiences. It’s also something we need to be very mindful of as a tourism industry when we are going forward in developing new opportunities.”

Ellis said there is a high focus on sustainability in tourism, so the region would be careful to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area without sacrificing the integrity of the area.

The environmentally significant areas in the region would be protected and pre-

served, while allowing a place for people to explore Alberta’s beauty.

“Though it has many of the similar assets as Banff, southern Alberta and more, we believe that this region itself has the potential to differentiate its image by being uncomplicated, uncrowded and unspoiled,” Ellis said.

“In terms of tourism there can be challenges. We want to ensure that the region and tourism in the region is positively embraced by its host communities. We hope that it becomes a major driver and diversification tool in our economy,” he said.

“IN TERMS OF TOURISM THERE CAN BE CHALLENGES. WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT THE REGION AND TOURISM IN THE REGION IS POSITIVELY EMBRACED BY ITS HOST COMMUNITIES. WE HOPE THAT IT BECOMES A MAJOR DRIVER AND DIVERSIFICATION TOOL IN OUR ECONOMY.” JUSTIN ELLIS

“In terms of how it is delivered, we want the industry players to become champions of this plan and its implementation and that they move forward in a unified, innovative and collaborative way.”

In developing a unified brand for regional tourism, Ellis explained each municipality has a role to play. A recommendation was made to utilize the 11 partner communities under the categories of gateways (Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House and Olds), hubs (Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Sundre, Nordegg, Innisfail) and

tourism service centres (Blackfalds and Ponoka). These designations would help communities identify their role in regional tourism, and plan for future development that accents their role in the DMP. A proposed idea to drive tourism through lesser-travelled areas uses what are known as ‘themed touring routes’.

These routes utilize existing roads to drive people through a particular area of tourism interest. For example, a tour of the West Country through Forestry Trunk Road or an Artisan and Rodeo tour utilizing Hwys. 2, 53, 20, 11 and 22.

These themed tourism routes would be promoted regionally to promote a wider exploration of Central Alberta by visitors.

The themes utilize the major tourism categories as previously mentioned and are customized to recognize the individuality of the municipalities and what they have to offer.

“By 2025, we will have transformed Central Alberta into a must-experience destination that is authentic, memorable and sustainable. In terms of growth and diversification, by 2025, we will have increased year-round visitation from our markets, both short-haul and long-haul, we will have increased direct and indirect economic contributions to our regional and local economies, and we will have attracted an increase in private sector investment and encouraged local and public investment,” said Ellis.

“Central Alberta brings together all of the diverse and authentic experiences for which Alberta is known, within a region that is uncrowded, unspoiled, welcoming and ready to be explored.”

The document explored strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats regarding the region’s tourism, with suggestions for each category. It has been introduced to major community leaders and stakeholders in hopes of receiving feedback, being adapted and then adopted. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

CIBC RUN FOR THE CURE A SUCCESS Last Sunday, the 24th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure took place in 10 communities across the prairies and based on the results, raised an estimated $4.48 million for breast cancer research and to help support the 25,200 Canadian women and men who will be diagnosed in 2015 as well as their families.

An estimated $242,321 was raised by the 972 participants in Red Deer alone.

BLOCK HEATER TIMER PROGRAM The City is giving out a limited supply of free outdoor multiuse timers in exchange for participants’ commitment to use the timer for energy conservation. Participants are encouraged to use the timer with their vehicle’s block heater or with outdoor and landscape lighting.

The City launched the Block Heater Timer program last year to educate drivers about wasteful energy consumption when plugging in block heaters overnight. An engine only needs two to three hours of plug in time to warm up and the timers help to conserve those extra hours of energy each night.

This year, the City is expanding the program for participants to use the timers with any outdoor electrical device, as long as it is working to conserve energy.

“We hope to create a ripple effect with this program,” said Matthew Chambers, environmental program specialist. “Most residents simply aren’t aware of how much energy they consume on a daily basis, and by introducing one simple tool, we can conserve energy and help reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that enter our air.”

A look at past celebrations of Thanksgiving Another Thanksgiving holiday will soon be upon us. It is one of the most popular annual family holidays – in some cases, second only to Christmas and New Year’s.

The roots of Thanksgiving go back centuries.

The celebration of the end of harvest, and hopefully the security of having enough food for the coming winter, is deeply rooted in agricultural societies. The famous Pilgrim Thanksgiving feast in Massachusetts in 1621 is often cited as the origin of many of the traditions of Thanksgiving celebrations.

There are records of Thanksgivings in Nova Scotia going back to the mid-1700s. After the end of the American Revolution, Loyalist refugees, who flooded across the border into Canada, brought with them many of the American traditions such as turkey, pumpkins and squash.

The dates of Canadian Thanksgiving fluctuated over the years, often being held between mid-October and early November.

In 1879, the Canadian

A tradition of setting the date of Thanksgiving by annual proclamation, by the Governor General, continued for many decades. However, local celebrations continued to be determined by the state of local harvests.

Also, Thanksgiving generally had a strong religious component and was often marked on a Sunday with special church services.

One of the first recorded Thanksgiving celebrations in Red Deer took place on Oct. 11th, 1892 at the conclusion of the first fall fair.

A large harvest home supper was held behind the Brumpton Store, on the south side of Ross Street, just west of Gaetz Avenue.

benches were set out for the serving of the meal.

Afterwards, the crowd moved to the Methodist Church on Blowers (51) St. for an evening’s entertainment consisting of humorous readings, instrumental music and hearty singing of hymns and popular songs.

The official Thanksgiving Day in 1892 was on Thursday Nov. 10th. For several years before that, and several years after, Thanksgiving was on a Thursday, although the dates ranged from mid-October to mid-November. In 1907, Thanksgiving Day fell on the same day as Halloween (i.e. Oct. 31st).

The following year (1908), Thanksgiving was changed to a Monday (Nov. 9th). It was felt that by setting the holiday on a Monday instead of a Thursday, families would have a greater opportunity to travel and visit family and friends.

The Canadian Pacific Railway encouraged this idea by offering special fare reductions, if a round– trip ticket was purchased.

The First World War was a searing experience across

Canada. Consequently, as the War finally began to draw to a close, there was a widespread movement to have a national day of thanksgiving to celebrate the end of hostilities and the return of peace.

Thus, while the official Thanksgiving Day in 1918 was set as Monday, Oct. 14th, another Thanksgiving Day was set for the first Sunday after the War came to an official end on Nov. 11th. However, because of the terrible Spanish influenza epidemic that was sweeping the country, this day of thanksgiving for peace was postponed to Dec. 1st as a public health measure.

In 1921, the government decided to combine the traditional Thanksgiving Day and the new Armistice (Remembrance) Day. Hence, Monday, Nov. 7th was designated as the combined national holiday. That tradition was continued until 1931, when the Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day holidays were separated again.

Thereafter, Thanksgiving Day was generally pro-

claimed as being the second Monday in October.

An exception occurred in 1935, when Thanksgiving was shifted from Monday, Oct. 14th, to Thursday, Oct. 24th, because of the federal election. Remembrance Day was commemorated on Nov. 11th, regardless

of what day of the week that was.

After 1957, Thanksgiving Day was permanently set by national legislation as the second Monday in October. The annual proclamations by the Federal Government became a thing of the past.

Local charities receive support through 100 Men/Women Who Care groups

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS The 100 Women Who Care and 100 Men Red Deer groups successfully raised over $10,000 each at their recent meetings with proceeds benefiting the Red Deer Hospice Society and the local branch of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB).

Each of the groups met for their third of four annual meetings, where the idea is to raise $10,000 or more within an hour.

This year was the inaugural year of the programs within the City.

The groups meet for an hour at a time with each attendee bringing a blank cheque for $100. Local organizations, charities and not-for-profit groups are nominated to receive the total donations. For both the local 100 Men and 100 Women groups, three nominees are chosen at random and short presentations are given on the groups before members vote for the recipients.

After a moving presentation to the 100 Women Group by Red Deer Hospice Society member Val Hilario, the organization was chosen to receive a minimum of $15,300, with more cheques rolling in.

These funds will be used to purchase three new beds for residents of the facility.

“I think Val did a really good job of presenting what hospice is all about.

It’s about caring for people in the end stages of their lives, and about supporting the families who are trying to be around their

loved one,” said co-0rganizer Cindy Jefferies.

“Many of us have had family or friends or know people who have loved ones that have benefited from the hospice services in our community. I think it just struck a chord with the people who were there.”

Similar to the 100 Women group, 100 Men Red Deer also was able to support more than one organization with their latest meeting.

The CNIB was chosen to receive the initial donation of just about $10,000 but two other groups were able to gain support through awareness of the meetings.

“It’s always been a close call for us - usually between two and four votes between the top two organizations. This time, it was four votes from the top two, with the CNIB taking home the money. However, there was a cool spin-off of this meeting. The lady representing Art Moves, a brand-new charity, came to me and said four or

five guys had committed to helping her out,” said organizer Jest Sidloski.

“Even though they didn’t receive the money, Art Moves got the awareness out about their brand new charity - 100 guys heard about it - and some people ended up getting involved. As well, we did a little spin-off for Line of Hope - Red Deer with Tom Raba coming out to talk to us about it a bit.”

Sidloski had asked the men of the group to bring warm winter socks for Line of Hope and invited Raba to explain that the socks would be given to Red Deer’s less fortunate through Line of Hope.

Through the meeting, Veteran’s Voices organizer Al Cameron was able to gain support for this year’s flag campaign as well.

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Members of the community gathered last week at Kerry Wood Nature Centre to celebrate the opening of the City’s first music park - a unique, inclusive accomplishment that is accessible to all members of the community.

The Kiwanis Harmony Garden is designed to allow for inclusive play for children with mobility issues who require wheelchairs or walking aids.

The space is filled with a variety of tuned and untuned instruments such as drums and xylophones that are integrated into a natural environment.

The Kiwanis Harmony Garden project was made possible by the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer, the Red Deer Homes Foundation and by federal monetary donations through the Enabling Accessibility Fund.

“We are very proud of this music park because it brings together all of the children of the entire community, even those with mobility issues, to come and partake in the outdoors,” said Cynthia de Boer of the Waskasoo Environmental Education

Society (WEES).

“We’re so incredibly proud. There aren’t a lot of these parks in the world so we feel very fortunate to have had the Kiwanis Club come together with the Homes Foundation, WEES and other community members to make this happen. It’s a very exciting place for us.”

An official opening ceremony took place with Mayor Tara Veer, members of City council and various community members on Oct 2nd. Students from the Lindsay Thurber High School band came out to test the instruments for the public, and even a few members of the Parkland Special Education Community School tried out the grounds.

“Connecting children with special needs to the great outdoors, along with the rest of the community’s children, will create great opportunities for fresh air, education and musical fun,” de Boer said during the celebration. ”Music researchers have found correlations between music making and some of the deepest workings of the human brain.

It’s a fun way to teach children, including those with

special learning needs.

Musical experiences can be an effective way to stimulate speech development, provide cognitive and motor development and create a meaningful environment for socialization.” de Boer said there are few parks like this one in North America, but the existing structures have been well received by the respective communities.

She said there are many benefits to having an outdoor music park because of the connections it can create between various community members.

“Music serves to bridge barriers between languages, allowing children of varying cultural backgrounds to find a common . Music is experienced by people of all cognitive and physical abilities - it has no barriers to access.

Music is cross-generational and children of all ages and adults can all listen to music together,” de Boer said.

“Outside of the research that has been done on the value of music therapy and music play, we have seen parks like this get extensive use. Rotary Music Park in Moab, Utah, has

African Children’s Choir in Central Alberta this week

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS The African Children’s Choir will be making a stop in Lacombe this week as part of their North American tour.

The group consisting of 18 children, ages seven to 11 from Uganda, will entertain audiences with a lively and vibrant showon Oct. 9th.

The performance will feature African songs, dances and drumming along with traditional spiritual and gospel favourites.

North American Choir Operations Manager Sarah Lidstone said the group began their tour in March in the United States andhave been working their way from the east coast.

“We were in the Maritimes and now we are working our way west,” she said. “We will end our tour in Vancouver.”

The traveling show is offered as free of charge, with funds raised going towards children’s choir programs including education, healthcare and de-

velopment programs.

The African Children’s Choir is operated by Music for Life (MFL), a humanitarian organization that operates in seven African countries including Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

Through their mission to create leaders of tomorrow through education, MFL has educated over an approximate 52,000 children and impacted over 100,000 people through development programs.

“Our mission is to work with children that are vulnerable or are in needy situations,” said Lidstone.

“We will go into a community and we partner with a social worker or a community leader. We try to seek out the children that are in need of an education and whose families cannot provide them with reliable education or meet their basic needs.”

The children will audition for the choir, and if chosen, they will tour with the choir program for a year and then return to

Uganda to receive an education.

“Really it’s just the beginning with their relationship with the choir,” said Lidstone. “Their education will be provided bysponsorship and through our organization, on to college and university.”

This particular show features a tight blend of traditional African music.

“The children drum, they dance and they have beautiful costumes that are from Africa,” explained Lidstone. “They also do English music that will include some gospel favourites like This Light of Mine and He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands that people will recognize.”

Throughout the concert there will be an opportunity to make donations. A few tables will also be set up with handmade items made by former choir members, along with CDs, DVDs and t-shirts.

“This is more than just a concert and these children’s lives are going to be changed,” said Lidstone.

“When they return to Africa and as they continue to grow, they will become educated.”

CAT set to hit the stage with Wild Dust

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The folks behind Central Alberta Theatre are excited about launching a brand new season with Wild Dust, penned by Flip Kobler and directed by Craig Scott.

Performances run Oct. 16th-18th, 23rd25th, 30th-31st and Nov. 1st, 5th-6th at the Quality Inn North Hill.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and curtain at 7:30 p.m.

The plot can be summed up like this - a massive dust storm is about to hit town back in the old west of the 1880s.

The men have gone to take care of the cattle leaving their women to take shelter in the solidly built saloon. But it’s a tad more complicated than that. “Tensions flare and sparks fly when society ladies are forced to take refuge with fallen women in the only safe building in town, the saloon. Now a lone cowboy stumbles in - a mysterious stranger who may or may not have a secret of his own,” reads the synopsis.

Scott, an experienced and gifted actor in his own right, has relished tackling the directing duties for this superb cast of eight women and one man. In perusing scripts, he felt it was time for a western.

“We went through about seven different scripts - a lot of them were depressing,” he explains. “They weren’t happy stories - they weren’t very fun. Western stories when I used to watch them as a kid, were fun. My dad was the one who really liked

with, and many onstage at once demands a certain balancing act of keeping actors - who aren’t speaking in a given moment - moving and interacting with the others in a natural way. “Every night during rehearsals, I would pick something that someone had done that was subtle - that I hadn’t noticed before - and I’d say that’s what I want you (all) to do and to build into your characters - find those subtleties and make the characters your own.”

Ultimately, everything has come together beautifully, and Scott is eager to showcase the production to local audiences.

the spaghetti westerns, Clint Eastwood type of shows and so did I.” But Wild Dust was more appealing - it had the fun, light-hearted nature to it that Scott was looking for but still had a few dramatic punches here and there for good measure as well.

“There are lots of funny lines and lots of zingers,” he said. Also a draw was that fact there are eight women in the play.

“I said that’s got to be a challenge, and it should be fun,” he chuckles.

Daniel Huss stars as Cooper, the fellow who is on the run and finds ‘refuge’ in the saloon with the ladies.

“Unlike Eastwood who would stay and challenge his (pursuers), this guy is running like crazy,” he said. “But as the play goes on, he falls in love with one of the ladies and realizes that he needs to become a man.”

Rounding out the cast are Laura Grinde as Marion, Muriah Willis as Belle, Carla Falk as Sally, Alex Taylor as Denise, Cynthia Edwards as Louise, Myra Ouellette as Gertie, Kathryn Huedepohl as ‘Hard’ Cora and Roxzane Armstrong as Rebecca.

From the start, it’s been a hoot bringing it all together. For one thing, the mix of levels of experience has been a treat there are several new faces plus some CAT veterans which Scott has enjoyed.

There have been challenges, including finding exactly the right costumes (but they did thanks to Red Deer College) and the fact that the characters are pretty much all on stage throughout the course of the entire play. It’s a large cast to begin

Scott also pointed out that the CAT board has voted to give one dollar of every ticket sold for the dinner theatres to a local charity. “We want to give back to the community, because they’ve given so much to us.” Funds collected from the Wild Dust will go to support the Women’s Shelter. Funds from the second show will support the Red Deer Christmas Bureau and the Red Deer Food Bank will benefit from the first show of 2016.

ENTERTAINMENT Singer John Wort Hannam brings artistry to City Oct. 14th

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Singer/songwriter John Wort Hannam has an amazingly honest, authetic approach to crafting tunes - a welcome and rare things in today’s musical landscape.

He performs Oct. 14th at Fratters where folks will be able to get a listen to the fabulous new collection of songs from his latest CD Love Lives On. He’s excited to chat about the disc, which continues to find the gifted artist breaking new ground while maintaining his distinct singer/ songwriter approach which has landed him a growing list of accolades including a Juno nod, a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Galaxie Rising Star Award and a Kerrville New Folk title.

Whatever it is, Wort Hannam is making music with a new-found confidence these days as is clearly reflected on the cuts from Love Lives On, which was produced

by Leeroy Stagger. He’s drawing more than ever from personal experience in his writing, resulting in an album that is part love songs, part road songs, and occasionally, both at the same time. He’s also a new dad, so that enormous life event has impacted him in terms of his vision as well.

He seamlessly incorporates everything from bluegrass and old-time to country rock and Americana – all with an contemporary folk feel. Stagger keeps things fresh with flourishes of originality such as the horns on Molly and Me and the Celtic fiddle on Goodnight Nova Scotia.

“I feel like I’ve grown as a person and as a songwriter over the past few years,” said Wort Hannam. “My life has changed and the process of writing has changed.

“I’m way more comfortable as a songwriter and I’m more comfortable writing from the heart. When you first start doing anything, no matter what it is, for the first time, I think you sort of look to people who are way more experienced than you are and sort of watch what they do.

“But these days I’m feeling more comfortable in my own skin and writing pretty much whatever I want,” he noted, adding that he noticed there were a number of love songs on this album. “When I first realized that, I thought do I want to be that guy?” he laughed. “But then I thought these songs have come from where I’m at at a particular time.

“So I just think, grab it and run with it.”

Born in Jersey, Channel Islands and raised in southern Alberta, Wort Hannam

REAL DEAL - Singer John Wort Hannam brings his striking collection of tunes to Fratters Speakeasy on Oct. 14th. earned degrees in Native American Studies and Native Education and taught Grade 9 on reserves for five years. He decided he wanted to pursue a career in music after hearing Loudon Wainwright III in 1997. Since quitting his teaching job in 2002, he’s released five CDs and written official songs for the 2011 Alberta Winter Games and for the 2012 100th anniversary of the Empress Theatre in Fort McLeod.

He won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award in 2007. He’s been nominated for three Western Canadian Music Awards, a North American Folk Alliance Award, and three Canadian Folk Music Awards – winning in 2010 for Contemporary Album of the Year. He also earned a 2010 Juno nod for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year – Solo, and he has three times won the Grand Prize in the Calgary Folk Festival Song Competition.

Interestingly, he didn’t grow up in a distinctly musical home. “My dad had a record player but no one played an instrument or sang in my house. My dad had maybe 20 records - sort of a bizarre mix of old

country, Charley Pride, Willy Nelson, Elvis and others like The Carpenters and The Platters,” he recalled. But as a kid, he heard the Calgary Boys Choir sing at his school and decided he wanted to sign up. “I went up to the conductor and said I want to join.

So I auditioned and sang for three years with them.” It was a wonderful training opportunity, not to mention a means of getting used to being in front of audiences.

“I really discovered the joy of singing.”

Unfortunately, when he approached his teens, he figured it wasn’t really the cool thing to do, so he quit. But it wasn’t long before he found the guitar. A musical identity was increasingly taking shape, but it wasn’t till about 16 years ago that he started thinking about getting into the biz.

“I started singing covers here and there - but I guess the aha! moment came about in around 2000 when I went to an open stage in Lethbridge and I sang three songs. When it was done, the club director said we are having a finale night next Saturday, so if you come back and sing those three songs I’ll give you $50!

“That honestly really helped get things going.”

Really, there hasn’t been much in the way of looking back. “I had dreams of being a working musician, of paying my bills and my mortgage by playing music.

And I remember thinking, if you are going to give this a go, you better hurry. Chop chop kind of thing.”

He didn’t have doubts on leaving his teaching careers, “Because I’ve never been afraid to fall on my face,” he chuckles. “I’ve never been afraid of not being good at something, because I just think I’ll move onto something else.”

In fact, his teaching helped him adjust to performing. “There is no difference to being onstage and being in front of a classroom. I can’t tell you how close it is you have to hold people’s attention, things have to be planned out. Honestly, I feel like my teaching and the choir experience - but more so it was me having to stand in front of a room and having to be in control of 30 kids - made the difference.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

The Northern Beauties gearing up for City show

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS There’s so much to be said about sticking to your guns when it comes to holding onto your own artistic vision. That’s what has guided the men of Calgary-based band The Northern Beauties to the place they are today, and local fans can tap into their extraordinary tunes when they play Fratters Oct. 8th.

Todd Stewart is the driving creative force behind the popular bluegrass-inspired, roots/folks quintet.

A veteran of the western Canadian music scene, Stewart is originally from Edmonton but moved south more than a decade ago to live closer to the mountains and explore Calgary’s music community.

After trying to position himself as more of a pop/rock artist, Stewart found that he had come to a crossroads – a position that compelled him to re-assess who he wanted to be as a musician and a songwriter. “I had a band called Brocade that was doing pretty well but we hit some snags and it just unravelled. And me being the guy doing everything, I was left holding the debt bag,” he said.

“My wife was a little hesitant with me doing another Brocade album because of that experience. She asked that if I was to do another album that it sound more like my songs when I first write them – like what she would hear while I was singing on the living room couch. So that was the deal. Previously, I would write everything in a western folk vein, but then go into the studio and re-arrange it to be more pop/rock because that’s the genre where all my industry contacts and avenues seemed to be and it’s what I had been

doing forever by default.”

As soon as he decided to follow his heart and make the shift, Stewart realized he would need collaborators.

“I was writing for the next Brocade album at the time, but I was writing what I always write - western, folky stuff. That was why I felt that I just couldn’t change it again this time around. The idea that had carried the Brocade name forward just seemed redundant. So I just kind of re-imagined it.”

He knew what he wanted moving forward, and eventually teamed up with vocalist Craig Aikman, drummer Erik Allen, bassist Aaron Schlopp and Charlie Hase who is on pedal steel. In terms of ultimately laying down tracks for the band’s EP, which was released nearly a year ago, Stewart really couldn’t have found a tighter, more cohesive set to work with.

And finding the right producer proved a natural step as well.

Back in 2010, Stewart had worked with west coast producer Shawn Cole on the Brocade CD. He had told Stewart at the time that he wanted to produce a bluegrass-type project. When it came time to bring the Northern Beauties tunes to life, Stewart knew immediately who to contact. “We had just hit it off - he’s such a true music fan and we have a lot of common loves when it comes to music,” he said.

“So it took a few years to bring him back into the fold for this one, but there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to work with Shawn on this,” he said. “Our relationship is really creative - it was a no-brainer to have him in there. he came in and did such an awesome job.”

Looking back to his own influences, Stewart recalls hearing his dad’s love for traditional country and western music.

His mom loved the Beatles, The Judds and classic artists like Patsy Cline. “I’ve always seen music as such a defining characteristic of a person,” he explained.

In Grade 11, a band visited his school featuring musician Stew Kirkwood and Stewart was simply mesmerized by what he heard. “It was intoxicating - it just hit me so hard.”

He asked his folks for a guitar for Christmas, and something of a musical journey was born.

But a pivotal moment came when he saw Blue Rodeo’s video Love and Understanding on MuchMusic.

“It wasn’t what was dominating the pop charts at the time but I loved it and it showed me that I could be a kid from Edmonton and wear old cowboy shirts and it was okay,” he said. “When I saw that video it was like I was finding my tribe!

So you’re injured - now what do you do?

Injuries! At some point, nearly everyone faces them, and I have yet to meet anyone happy about it. As a trainer and an athlete I work very hard at making sure people (including me) train smart and avoid injuries, but once in a while, something odd happens, and there you are. Busted up and frustrated.

So now what? First off, get the injury properly assessed immediately! Don’t walk it off, assume it’s fine, trust it will settle or whatever.

Find out what you are dealing with! I have met people that have injuries that are months or years old, and by then, so much harder to help with. Permanent scar tissue sets in and coming back is way harder than it needs to be.

Choose a practitioner that is appropriate for the injury: a medical doctor, physiotherapist, chiropractor etc.

If you don’t know who to call, ask around, people will recommend who to see and who to avoid.

We have a list of specialists we trust with our clients and use them all the time to help people get back to optimal health!

Once you have the injury assessed and a plan starts to form as to what to do, then there are other things you can put in place as well.

First off, just because you injured your ankle, or wrist or whatever, that is NOT permission to drop all exercise and sit on the couch for three months - please don’t do that.

A few days off, for sure, and keep it light to let your body heal, but stay consistent with your workout times and do what you can, obviously avoiding the injured area.

If you hurt your back, well, that is a little more sensitive and requires special consideration, but even then there are things you can do. A trainer can really help with that!

I used to have a disc that bulged out all the time and I discovered, through my chiropractor, a device called a ‘Spine Power Belt’ and it held my hips in place while my back healed. It cut my recovery time down from a month or so to a week.

Ask questions - people are inventing stuff all the time! Next, you need to take care of your nutrition. It is so easy when injured to just feel bad, sit on the couch and over indulge in junk food, but that is the last thing you need to do.

The first stage of injury is inflammation: the body responds to the injury and causes swelling, pain, heat and such.

McDERMOTT That’s good, that is the natural response and will bring the cavalry to start working on the problem.

During stage one, you need to eat healthy oils and fats like avocado, fish oil, fish (salmon, mackerel etc) and mixed nuts and seeds.

Avoid stuff like foods with trans fats (which you should always avoid), things like chips, cookies, candies, processed food and processed meats etc.

Add in things like garlic, pineapple and curry or turmeric.

Those all help with this process and extra

antioxidants are also great at this time – like really colorful fruits and veggies.

Get adequate rest too, 7.5 to eight hours a night and try to make it consistent. Set your bedtime and waking time to be as similar day to day as possible.

The next stage of injury is called proliferation and that is when old damaged tissue is removed by the body, new tissue is constructed, as well as new blood flow pathways to help the healing process.

At this time you need to be eating a little more than usual to help your metabolism with the extra work.

Definitely a solid supply of protein from healthy sources like meat, fish, eggs etc.

Keep things in balance with around a 30% protein, 40% carbs (yes, carbs) and 30% fats but choose good fats as above.

Keep those fruits and veggies in the rainbow – colour is good. A great multi vi-

tamin is always on my list, but even more so now, and with perhaps a little extra Vitamin A, C and minerals like copper and zinc as well as glutamine.

These help the healing process big time!

(Of course consult with your doctor on this.)

The final and third stage of an injury process is remodeling. Permanent tissue replaces temporary scar tissue and the injury begins to get stronger and stronger.

Keep on those healthy food choices of course, and slowly, when cleared to do so, begin strength training for the injured site.

Above all, do not sit around and wait for things to heal on their own. Check in with a professional and get help right away in order to minimize the time you are injured and get back in the game.

Faced with a medical decision, patients normally allow their doctor to decide on treatment, assuming he or she, “Always knows best”.

But Consumer Report on Health claims this approach rarely works. Doctors simply are unable to keep up with the flood of new information.

Consequently, some decisions must be based on the patient’s priorities, not just the doctor’s. This process might even decrease the cost of medical care.

Of course you must always ask your doctor, “What happens if I decide against treatment?” For instance, an 80 year old man with early prostate cancer may live another 15 years without treatment.

In the interim he may die of something else. He may also decide that he does not want to take the risk of surgery and end up in diapers.

For women with early breast cancer a ‘lumpectomy’ may be an option rather than complete removal of the breast. Some however, feel more assured if the entire breast is removed.

The main point is to be an informed patient so there are no surprises.

Chiefs see mixed results in weekend games

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs started the season with a win and a loss over the weekend.

Red Deer’s Midget AAA hockey team started the season off strong with a win over the Calgary Buffaloes on Friday night at home before jumping on the QEII Hwy. for an afternoon matchup against the Lethbridge Midget AAA Hurricanes.

Despite a strong showing in the first game, the team couldn’t quite best the Hurricanes, falling 4-1.

“I think it was a positive step forward for sure,” said Head Coach Brandin Cote.

The first period of Friday’s game saw a fairly even matchup. Neither side scored, although the Optimist Chiefs ended up with a 12-9 lead in shots.

“Anytime you’re early in the season, I mean, there’s lots of things you still need to work on. But I really liked their energy level right from the start of the game,” Cote said, adding that the Buffaloes are a really quick and skilled team.

“We had weathered their storm early on. They kind of took it to us at the start.”

Cote said the first game at home for any team can be a bit of an emotionally charged moment, especially for younger players.

“Everyone’s kind of a little bit jacked up and nervous. I think once the boys settled their nerves a little bit and we settled in we were fine,” he said.

It took until halfway through the second period for someone to break the deadlock. At 11:15 of the second, the Chiefs drew first blood thanks to a goal by Landon Mackenzie. Dayton Playford and Josh Tarzwell picked up the assists.

“For the most part we controlled the play and we capitalized on some key opportunities,” Cote said.

The Chiefs would add another goal four minutes later on a shot by Landon Zetner to take a 2-0 lead going into the third period.

The home team kept the pressure on early in the third. Just four and a half minutes into the final frame, with the Chiefs on the power play, Landon Siegle picked up his first goal of the season to give his team a 3-0 lead.

Parker Smyth and Tyler Graber picked up the assists on the play.

Things started to look like they might fall apart late in the period, however, when Ayden Roche-Setoguchi and Kyle

Harrison connected with Cooper Johnson on the power play to bring the Buffaloes within two.

“They had a push at the end where they scored one on the power play and then they pulled the goalie with 30 seconds left and they scored one,” Cote said. He added he thought the Chiefs did a really good job of not panicking and sticking to the game plan to come away with the win.

The Buffaloes’ second goal came with just six seconds remaining in the game.

Calgary ended up out-shooting Red Deer 33-27. Red Deer goaltender Justin Travis turned aside 31 shots while allowing only two goals and picking up an assist on the Zetner goal.

“At this point of the season, there’s not really one or two things. I think that it’s just the body of work that needs to continue to grow. We’re still trying to implement our team’s structure in terms of our special teams and our forecheck, so that’s going to take some time to imple-

ment,” the coach said.

Saturday turned out to be a much tougher challenge. The Chiefs headed south to Lethbridge for an afternoon matchup against the Hurricanes.

“That was a tough one. I mean we had a tough turnaround, I mean we played a late game on Friday and we were up early on Saturday for a mid-afternoon game,” Cote said, adding the quick turnarounds can be difficult for players to adjust to, especially when travel is involved.

“Not necessarily an excuse but that played a part in it I think.”

According to the coach, the Buffaloes came out flat-footed early in the game.

“The game was fairly even, kind of a feeling-out process.”

The Chiefs did manage to score the first goal of the game, as Siegle picked up his second of the weekend halfway through the first period.

The ‘Canes answered back the very next shift, though, taking some wind out of Red Deer’s sails.

“I think that kind of deflated us a little bit,” Cote said.

Lethbridge would add two more goals in the second and one in the third to claim a 4-1 victory.

“As the game went on, I didn’t necessarily think we were outplayed. They got a few breaks on a few goals where we had guys laying down to block shots and instead of them getting out of the zone, they stayed in,” Cote said.

“When you’re battling and things like that happen, it kind of takes the wind out of the sails a little bit.”

Cote said while the loss was unfortunate, he wasn’t disappointed with the team’s effort.

Next up for the Chiefs will be a couple of tough road games against the CAC Gregg Distributors and the Leduc Chrysler Oil Kings. Their next home game will be Oct. 17th when they face off against the Distributors at Red Deer Arena. The puck drops on that one at 4:45 p.m.

Red Deer Rebels continue to dominate in undefeated season ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Rebels continued to roll over the weekend, earning two big homeice wins to stay undefeated on the season.

The Rebels improved their record to 4-0-0 last week with a 5-1 rout of the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night before getting a huge 7-4 victory over the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday.

Things started off strong in the first game when Rebels forward Grayson Pawlenchuck picked up the puck behind Swift Current’s net, stepped out in front and buried his second of the season just a minute and a half into the game to give the Rebels an early first period lead.

After that it was all downhill for the Rebels, who out shot the Broncos 48-25 in the game.

“I thought we did a really good job with puck possession, controlling plays. We were obviously really good in the offensive zone,” said Rebels’ Head Coach and General Manager Brent Sutter after the game.

The team was sharp all game long, going 2/6 on the power play and not taking a single minor penalty all game.

“We wanted to be disciplined but, you know, when you have the puck you’re not chasing either,” Sutter said.

Newcomers Ivan Nikolishin and Michael Spacek also shone in the game, combining for five points and three goals.

Nikolishin scored twice and earned himself a first-star selection.

Rebels’ Captain Conner Bleackley scored his first of the season in his first game back from NHL camp.

“I felt okay. I think it’s a little bit different with the systems and stuff. I thought our line played pretty well,” Bleackley said.

Saturday night was a tougher test as the Rebels played host to the defending WHL champions - the Kelowna Rockets.

The Rebels had a slower start to the second game of the weekend. They surrendered the first goal of the game on the penalty kill eight minutes into the first period.

The Rebels would answer back quickly, though. At 14:57 of the first, Brandon Hagel carried the puck over the Rockets’ blue line. He quickly dropped the puck back to Kayle Doetzel, who fired a shot on goal which deflected off of veteran forward Evan Polei and past Kelowna’s Michael Herringer to tie the game at one.

Polei would add his second goal of the night just 18 seconds later to put the home team in front 2-1 going into the second frame.

Red Deer came out guns blazing in the second period. Rookie sensation Spacek ripped one past Herringer just 1:52 into the period for his fifth goal in just four games.

He would add an assist later to bring his league-leading point total to nine.

They would add three more goals off the sticks of Pawlenchuck, Austin Pratt, and Colton Bobyk before the end of the period. Kelowna scored just once in the second frame when Kole Lind shovelled a rebound over Regan Toth at 7:14.

The performance didn’t hold up, though. The Rebs looked flat coming out of the gates in the third period, which has been Kelowna’s strongest in the last couple of years, and the Rockets made

Just 13 seconds into the final frame, Jeff DeWit turned the puck over to Calvin Thurkauf in front of the Rebels net.

Thurkauf made no mistake and fired the puck past Toth.

Kelowna added another later in the frame to cut the Rebels lead to two with four minutes left.

Red Deer managed to add an empty net goal late in the game but it was a much

closer contest than the score would suggest.

“I wasn’t particularly pleased with the way we played. I think we made a lot of soft plays tonight,” Sutter said.

The Rebels had a night time game in Lethbridge on Tuesday night and will follow that up with a home and home set against their provincial and divisional rivals, the Calgary Hitmen, this weekend. zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

Enhancing your home with those warm personal touches I recently watched a charming movie called Toast which is the life story of celebrity chef Nigel Slater. It is a charming account of his youth and the circumstances which created the soft spoken chef I watch on TV on a regular basis. As is my way I was enthralled with the set design showing 1960s kitchen designs and hideous wallpaper but the endearing way it was filmed and narrated kept my interest throughout the entire film.

Nigel’s stepmum came onto the scene after his mother passed away and basically cooked and baked her way into his father’s heart which created the need for Nigel to try to out cook her to regain his fathers’ attention.

The lemon meringue pie, which is a pivotal point in the movie, defies gravity and it’s hard to tell if it is real or a stage prop! The old school recipes made me

It is certainly part of what makes a house into a home.

The smell of fresh coffee when you come in from outside on a cold day or the aroma of freshly baked anything. These are sights and sounds of heart and home and I’m certain that getting back to a few rustic basics would enrich all of our lives.

We may not have the most modern or hippest house on the block but we can

make it our home and take time for the special touches. I’m positive that no matter how outdated the kitchen is, if you have guests in your home and you pull a homemade apple pie out of the oven that will be the only thing they see!

What could be prettier than glistening jars of copper and merlot coloured jam on your counter, twinkling in the sunlight or a pot of homemade soup bubbling away on your stovetop creating a delicious scent and a cheerful sound?

Do you remember the feeling of satisfaction you had last time you spent a day in your kitchen or do you worry too much about the fact that you don’t have granite countertops or new stainless steel appliances? Sometimes we can decorate our homes simply by creating that homey feel and even if the wallpaper or paint colour is ugly, it will truly feel like home.

Last weekend my daughter brought home collard greens from a visit to Steel Pony Farms and cooked me supper with this leafy monstrosity.

I had never tried them but they always seemed to be the epitome of homey hearty fare and as I sat in the living room enjoying the delicious aromas she was creating I felt very peaceful and infinitely satisfied in everything about my home. The countertops in my kitchen didn’t matter and for once I wasn’t obsessing about the foyer light that I want to change.

All was right in the world and in my home from a simple, giant leaf and the willingness of someone who wanted to cook for me. It was a delightful experience and it made me grateful for everything I do have, even if I am just making toast.

The ideal mortgage qualifying client There are a million variables that determine how one can qualify for a mortgage.

TURCOTTE The banks, mortgage lenders and credit unions all have different guidelines to be able to qualify under their programs, and then we have the mortgage insurers and multiple other regulatory bodies that affect decisions as well.

Variables such as income type (employee, self employed, pension, etc.), affordability ratios, down payment/gift/equity, credit quality, property type and the list go on.

The rules for each one of these criteria can differ from one credit score, income type, etc. to the next and unraveling them all is like peeling an onion – there are a lot of layers.

Income - from the lenders’ perspective, the most stable income type for a consumer (based on historical data) is the ‘Employee’.

The ‘Employer’ essentially holds the risk of their employees’ personal income taxes, so the employee is the favoured choice.

Ideally, they prefer to see the client with the same employer for two years, changing positions isn’t usually a bad thing within that employer, pending on how that new income is generated.

For example, salaried positions are least risky as they are most stable. Getting into salaried plus over time (OT)/bonus/commissions is an entirely new set of criteria.

type of incomes, the rules now state that you have to qualify on your most recent two years of income and preferably at the same employer.

In either case, the banks are looking for the least risk when providing any sort of loan. So, it’s easy to presume, longevity and consistency rule. Remember, that’s the perfect scenario, there are always exceptions based on the quality of the other variables.

Down Payment - the strongest types of down payment/equity are those where they are earned yourself - it shows character.

To prove the ‘earned’ down payment/ equity, we need to show them verification of the funds over a 90-day period whether it’s coming from your saved up bank accounts, RRSPs, GIC’s or investment statements.

They are looking for the anomalies in the deposit amounts and any large irregular looking deposits that need to be accounted for and usually explained.

Equity is confirmed via mortgage statements and the sale contract or appraised value.

There are other types of down payment as well, for example, gifts from immediate family members, sale of existing assets or borrowed from your existing home or line of credit(unsecured borrowings have tighter qualifying guidelines).

Credit - credit scores range between 300-900, the higher the better.

In Canada, to qualify for the best products and rates that the banks and lenders offer, they want to see your credit score above 680, and preferably over 720 plus.

The score isn’t the end all be all either these days, they want to see longevity and differing types of credit. The rule of thumb is two years of credit, over $2,000

on two different loans and both loans open today (whether it be two credit cards at $2,000 with zero to low balances or car loan and a credit card or other variations as well) - again longevity and consistency here rules.

Affordability Ratios - in the mortgage world this is called your Debt Service Ratios.

Total Debt Service Ratio (TDSR) and Gross Debt Service (GDSR) are the ones used on the residential side of mortgage applications.

The lenders are using your qualifying income vs all of your monthly obligations to come up with the ratios.

Just like your golf score, the lower the ratios, the better your chances of qualifying for a mortgage. The better credit quality clients can have TDSR ratios as high as 44% and 39% for GDSR, but usually 40% is used as a historical rule of thumb.

Property Type - we all know there are a

lot of variables here, especially in Alberta.

Anything outside of a regular home zoned as a ‘single family residence’ will likely be scrutinized further and may come with additional qualifying factors.

These are just some of the basics that the lenders look at to aid in qualifying you for a mortgage.

To put it simply, the least risky client is a two year tenured salaried employee, has saved up their own down payment or has equity in their own home, has low TDS/GDS ratios and is buying a single family ‘re-marketable’ home in a densely populated area and their credit score is over 750 and has well over two years of credit on more than two loans. In a perfect world, the banks want everyone to look like this, but we all know that isn’t so.
