Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC is taking steps to support the fire relief efforts in Rock Creek by rebuilding a home for a family that lost their home in the fire.

The planning of a benefit fashion show and silent auction are now well underway in partnership with Heather Smith’s Yellow Door Boutique in Greenwood.

Giving baby its best chance

Cynthia Garnett from Baby’s Best Chance Program and Jacqueline Malkinson, the new public health nurse from Midway, held the first Quintessence Foundation Breastfeeding Challenge in Rock Creek on Saturday, Oct 3.

Two women, Miranda Holly and Raylene Tyssen, came out to support this annual international event. This event is a fun way for breastfeeding mothers to gain recognition and support for their breastfeeding efforts.

As stated by the Public Health Agency of Canada, “Breast milk is the best food to help babies grow and develop.

Each mother custom makes milk for her baby that contains the perfect amount of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals.”

Public Health, Baby’s Best Chance, and the peer mentors of breastfeeding are continuing to work to improve the breastfeeding education and support for Boundary women. Grand Forks has run a Breastfeeding Café for several years now and

there are plans to start a group in the West Boundary area this month.

The groups are a place where mothers can meet and greet other mothers who are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding, although “natural,” is not always a process that comes naturally.

Breastfeeding, like breast milk, ebbs and flows with ease and success and sometimes with challenges and grief.

When we celebrate these mothers’ successes we are in no way insinuating that we think that mothers who cannot or chose not to breastfeed are bad mothers. We educate women about the benefits of breastfeeding and then support them when they have challenges but some women cannot breastfeed and the causes can be physical, emotional, mental, and social.

We support those mothers to formula feed with good attachment practices.

We want all mothers to feel joy and pride for all that they do with and for their babies. When a mother sets out to breastfeed,

Event organizer Cindy Fairs, a director with HFH, is thrilled that her organization is able to assist some of those affected by the events of Aug. 13.

“Habitat is a humanitarian organization and the board of directors felt compelled to become involved,” Fairs said.

“Many businesses, organizations and individuals have contributed to supporting the families affected.”

She added, “This seemed like a natural fit for our organization—a tragic event has taken place in one of our local communities and building homes

her experience is made easier with positive support from family, friends, professionals and peer mentors.

A breastfeeding peer mentor is someone who has an interest in breastfeeding and has taken breastfeeding education and is able to support other breastfeeding. In September, five peer mentors completed an online breastfeeding course and 21 modules. Two of these are from the West Boundary: Jessi Bryan and Jennifer Mallach.

Bryan took the Breastfeeding Course because she “struggled with breastfeeding recently, so was very motivated to have new knowledge so she that can share it with moms and be helpful,” she said.

In addition to the Nov. 7 fundraising event, Fairs and Smith are also planning a calendar, the proceeds of which will go entirely to the house-building project. The calendar will feature a series of light-hearted portraits of regional firefighters, and the Times’ Andrew Tripp has volunteered his expertise to create the images.

Habitat homes are built by volunteers and community partners and are traditionally

sold at fair market value with an interest-free mortgage, and mortgage payments that do not exceed 25 per cent of the homeowner’s income. To date, Habitat has built 20 homes within southeast B.C. Fairs said, “Unlike the traditional standard of selecting a family based on a screening criteria and then holding the mortgage for families that it supports, Habitat will be raising funds to rebuild on land pre-owned by the homeowner.”

The name of the family has not yet been released but will be announced at a later date once confirmed.

No respect Some ATV riders are giving their fellow quad enthusiasts a bad name by not respecting those whose property they are utilizing for their recreation.

More than ever, landowners and ranchers alike are complaining about riders driving through private property or Crown land to either access existing trails or carve out new ones.

Ranchers that lease Crown land to range their herds are becoming increasingly frustrated by the neglect of some riders to ensure that gates are left closed, often resulting in long, and, potentially, expensive searches for animals that are notorious for wandering.

A recent spate of cattle sightings on major highways may well be the result of gates being left opened or fences cut by insensitive riders. Despite there being no proof of the tragedy being caused by such neglect, the early August death of a motorcyclist who collided with a stray cow on Highway 3 just west of Greenwood certainly magnified the potential harm that careless riders can cause.

There have been numerous complaints aimed at the quadders regarding the cutting of padlocks and fences and even the felling of trees, as some riders seem to have little regard for others’ property or privacy. One elderly couple in Summerland described how a “No Trespassing” sign they had attached near the top of a tree was removed by a group of riders, who matter-of-factly cut down the tree and proceeded to ignore the sign.

The couple described some of their encounters with ATV owners during the last several years as “disturbing” and, in some cases, bordering on aggressive.

In the sport’s defence, most recreational riders are respectful of the environment and actively campaign to provide it with a much better profile than that which currently exists with many landowners and ranchers in the Boundary.

As the recent ATV jamboree in Greenwood illustrated, most riders happily comply with government recommendations regarding off-road recreation, and want nothing more than to leave the environment as pristine as it was when they passed through it.

Let’s hope those that are less considerate take a page out of their book and keep riders, landowners and ranchers all happy.

The West Boundary Sustainable Foods and Resources Society (FAR) had a busy week in Midway recently, as it welcomed two experts to the Teddy Bear Farm to discuss and demonstrate the art of seed-saving, and, three days later on Sept. 27, held it’s annual general meeting at the Midway Community Garden.

Host Leda Fair, president of the society, used her own sizeable garden as a source for dried beans, which were then separated by Boundary Farms’ Sheila Dobie using a newly acquired winnower.

The machine uses a crank to create a current of air, which spins the cracked seedpod and separates the seed from the chaff. This makes the process much faster than the manual method and ideal for gardeners in areas without electricity!

The seeds are subsequently separated according to quality and kept for up to five years prior to planting.

Seed-saving expert John Alcock, proprietor of Kelowna’s Sunshine Farm, provided attendees of the event with much insight as to the intricacies of seed saving, including the importance of avoiding bio engineered seed, which could be patented or have proprietary rights. Buying certified organic seed ensures that it is not bio-engineered.

“Seed saving is an ancient tradition practiced by farmers and gardeners alike,” explained Alcock. “It is easy to carry on this tradition and maintain a link to our past, carry it to the future and be connected to the Earth through one of its basic cycles; selecting, saving, planting and savouring.”

Alcock also stressed the importance of selecting the best plants for seed, which are those true to variety. The science of seed saving recommends that a gardener avoid replanting a bean that does not look like the original seed. Those, says Alcock, should be “saved for the soup pot.”

FAR’s inaugural Harvest Home was held at Midway’s community garden, where Fair made a heartfelt statement about the impressive garden the society has established.

“The garden was planned as a demonstration garden to showcase different gardening techniques and explore season extension ideas, ” Fair explained, “while at the same time growing vegetables for all Boundary residents in need of food.”

The garden is 30 metres long and 10 metres wide, which accommodates seven rows, each of which is about a metre in width and separated by approximately 60 centimetres. Each row is irrigated by two buried drip lines, which are activated for two hours each morning and another two in the evening as required.

“This year we began in May and worked three hours each Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” Fair said. “Our efforts were focussed on sifting the soil to remove a lot of the gravel and rocks, and to

Fair estimates volunteers removed over 1,300 kilograms of rock and gravel from each row, which will be used to make a barrier along the outer edge of the garden. Thick layers of cardboard will be laid under the gravel to help keep weeding to a minimum.

Work is nearly complete on all seven rows and the garden looks ready to go next spring.

Fair went on to acknowledge the assistance of many individuals during the construction of the garden, including Dick Dunsdon and the Village of Midway for establishing the community garden and providing FAR with such a sizeable area with which to work, as well as donating irrigation equipment. She personally thanked Dunsdon for his willingness to answer questions and make suggestions throughout the process.

Fair also thanked the likes of John Boltz, Tom Bosovich, Jamie Haynes and John Linquist for delivering components key to the success of the garden, as well as her husband John, brother Laurie, farmhand Don Huggett, Sandy and Mike Fairburn and Gloria Lautard for their untiring willingness to pitch in whenever and however they could.

Fair was also pleased to report that the society currently has over $1,000 in reserve and that they were looking forward to the 2016 season.

Fair hopes that membership will continue to increase and help the FAR Society reach its goal of cultivating a healthy and sustainable local food system.

Committee needs new members, says Goddard Delegate Les Goddard spoke on behalf of the Recreation Committee. He requested that council immediately appoint several new members to the committee, to allow for the commencement of work projects delayed by the departure of several committee members.

Councillor Lang informed Goddard that deputy clerk Wendy Higashi would have to research the bylaw regarding committee appointments and report her findings to council. This would preclude the appointments from being made until the next council meeting on Oct. 13.

Goddard stated that work at the rink would not be able to go forward without the committee in place. Council agreed to direct Higashi to examine the bylaw and make a report to council prior to the next council meeting.

Board of Trade applies for signage Board of Trade chair Jim Nathorst stated that the board had made a formal application to the city to mount permanent signage near the McArthur Centre (where the Founder’s Day sign presently sits).

Nathorst presented a mock-up of the signage to council and the gallery, which was generally well received. Nathorst noted that the signage could be utilized by the entire community to advertise events.

Council agreed in principle with the sign’s installation.

UBCM a “great learning experience” Mayor Ed Smith reported on the UBCM convention in Vancouver that kept all participants busy with a number of workshops, forums and group discussions.

The city was actively looking for grants for a generator, and Smith cited MLA Linda Larson’s office assistance in ensuring the Greenwood contingent got to speak to the right people.

Higashi offered her impression of the conference as being extremely busy and a great learning experience for her in her new position as acting CAO. She also suggested that next year the city should consider sending a larger contingent to the UBCM conference.

I know the Boundary country fairly well since my wife came from Grand Forks and we spend a lot of time there, and in the Boundary I see similarities to other interior communities that are having a hard time attracting working families and servicing a large seniors population.

If elected as your MP, I would work hard to assist the local government in the Boundary to access federal government infrastructure funding which provides good jobs while building needed services. The NDP will increase direct transfers to municipalities and make it easier for smaller communities to be eligible for these funds.

Increasingly, people are moving to beautiful parts of the country such as the Kettle Valley because of the outdoors lifestyle.

Many can work out of their own homes, but we must ensure that infrastructure elements such as broadband Internet are available to rural communities.

These small businesses are important job creators in Canada, and the NDP would encourage them to grow by lowering the small business tax rate from 11

to 9 per cent.

Good jobs are key to keeping people in smaller communities, and in B.C. the forest industry is often the primary employer. An NDP government would invest in forest product manufacturing facilities to help maintain or retool for competitiveness, and support research and development for new products, manufacturing methods and new wood biomaterials.

Seniors are also retiring to the Boundary Country in increasing numbers. Many pensioners live near or below the poverty line, so we must ensure that their incomes are sufficient for a comfortable retirement.

The NDP would roll back the age of eligibility for Old Age Security from 67 to 65, add $400 million to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (lifting 200,000 seniors out of poverty), fix the Canada Pension Plan so that people can properly save for retirement, and maintain pension income splitting at tax time.

The frequency and intensity of fires is a concern in the Boundary as is water quality and quantity. Climate change and the need to lower carbon emissions is a serious issue for the NDP as is preparing for community emergencies. The NDP would restore funding to the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program quietly cut by the Conservatives in 2012.

As a biologist, I know that proper standards and funding to maintain clean water and a healthy environment is essential.

Finally, access to good health care is an extremely important issue, and many Canadians are having a difficult time to even

find a family doctor. To alleviate this, a federal NDP government will help the provinces hire 7,000 health professionals and build or expand 200 community clinics across the country.

Health services for seniors are a particular concern; last year the NDP drafted a National Seniors Care Health Strategy that includes funding to expand home care services, help provinces build more nursing home beds and palliative care services. And the NDP will bring in a universal Pharmacare plan for full prescription drug coverage.

We’ve introduced income splitting for families, saving many families up to $2,000 per year. The NDP also voted against family income splitting and have committed to remove this benefit.

The tax savings have been so significant that the average family of four pays $6,600 less in federal tax per year than they did in 2006.

The Conservatives are committed to reducing taxes for small businesses, families, seniors and individuals.

If re-elected, we will raise the annual pension deduction limit per person from $1,000 to $2,000 and all the way to $4,000 for single seniors. This will mean that every senior household (whether you are a couple or single) will be able to have a combined tax saving of $600 per year.

At the same time both the Liberals and NDP want to raise taxes on working Canadians. For a person earning $60,000 annually, the Liberals propose raising payroll taxes by about $1,000 and the NDP propose raising payroll taxes by $1,500. The Conservative Party stands opposed to these proposals and in fact will reduce payroll taxes by about $200 per year by 2017.

The NDP have also proposed raising taxes for businesses by 13 per cent starting next year. This is irresponsible and will affect the economy.

If the NDP plan is enacted, it will cost jobs.

Economists estimate that the NDP plans will cost 250,000 Canadians their jobs.

If elected, I will not only work for a stronger economy and lower taxes, but I will fight against Thomas Mulcair’s plans to bring back the failed long-gun registry.

It was just last December that Mulcair said he would register every gun in Canada if he was ever elected. A registry of long-guns only targets law abiding gun owners and does nothing to reduce crime.

I will work closely with our local mayors to identify their top infrastructure requirements and then advocate for federal resources.

We need to help local ranchers better manage our water resources and also provide tools which would facilitate processing our food animals regionally. We need to address transportation, educational opportunities and access to health care resources.

The health of our democracy depends on electing MPs who are accountable to their constituents. Green MPs will seek constructive solutions to issues in our local communities, striving to create dialogue and solve problems when they arise.

Fire Prevention Week is this week, Oct. 4 10.

Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep?

Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half! That’s why, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme aims to keep your family safe with working smoke alarms in

every bedroom. The official theme is “Hear the Beep where you Sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.”

We hope everyone will install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.

National Fire Protection Assoication (NFPA) is excited to share this important information so everyone better understands the life-saving value of home smoke alarms. Visit NFPA’s “Smoke

Alarm Central” and Fire Prevention Week website for more information, resources, messages, videos and a fun, interactive quiz to test your knowledge.

Be prepared for wildfires too Provincial wildfire personnel faced an unusually busy fire season this year. The 2015 season started earlier than normal, with unseasonably hot temperatures and a higher than normal amount of lightning activity driving an increase in fire starts throughout the province.

Despite aggressive wildfire activity that challenged their efforts, provincial crews responded to over 1,800 fires and kept the vast majority of them small.

The province worked closely with our neighbours in the United States, as many fires were burning near our shared border.

When fires threatened to cross the international boundary, close working relationships between jurisdictions ensured that there was solid communication and coordination in place.

During this season, as of Oct. 5, 1,823 fires burned a total of 304,649 hectares and $277,908,183 were spent on fire suppression. Of these fires, 573 were human-caused

and therefore preventable. They burned an estimated total of 57,003 hectares.

Responding to these wildfires required a major team effort. The crews on the ground, the air crews fighting the fires from above, the support and ad-

ministrative personnel and everyone else who assisted were all instrumental in keeping B.C. communities safe.

I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to the structure firefighters from Greenwood, Grand Forks, Christina Lake, Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire in Trail and Big White Fire Dept who came to assist Midway Fire during the devastating Rock Creek Wildfire. Your hard work and bravery was the product of many human as well as material saves during that event. In addition my sincere thanks are extended to Chief Dale Heriot, Grand Forks Fire Rescue; Chief Terry Martin, Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire; and Chief Roy Terashita, Greenwood Fire, for their incredible support and assistance to us during the fire.

And to the members of the Midway Volunteer Fire Deptartment, I can only say that I couldn’t be prouder of the tireless hard work and effort each of you provided during most difficult circumstances. I’m hopeful all communities share the pride and appreciation for the work fire fighters do. Again, well done and thank you!

The start of the school year always marks a spike in the number of enquiries to Child and Youth Mental Health agencies across the Kootenay Boundary. With one in five children and youth affected by mental health challenges, it’s a problem that is more widespread than many people realize.

To help bring a public face to the issue and provide a place for families, caregivers, children and youth to interact with each other, the volunteer led Kootenay Boundary Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use local action team has launched a new Facebook page.

The Boundary C 4-H club capped a busy the 2nd and 4th Sundays (twice a month for the year) month of September with its annual visit to the

Members competed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in judging, weight classes, showmanship and more. Sewing members also had a fashion show on Saturday evening.

Those placing at Rally Day with their educational displays were judged again at PWF, with Juniors Savanna Elliot and Analia van Kuik taking first and Marijka van Kuik placing third for Intermediate.

Marijka, the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only photography member, placed well in her classes, including taking first in showmanship.

On Sunday evening there was an awards banquet and dance.

The beef division earned top group of five members with the highest aggregate score, Ranch Horse got first in stall competition and Beef got runner-up in their division.

A stall competition is a competition in which competitors are judged on the cleanliness and tidiness of their stalls. Judges would come around the display area to check stalls and members would have to answer any questions they had.

In the Fred Nichol event, Dawson Harpur won $700 towards next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beef project and in the Tremlow event, Alec Elliot won $250 for next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sheep project.

Sheep members represented the club well, especially considering this was their first year.
