2015 A-List Welcome to the 2015 edition of the News' A-List. Over the years, this has become one of our most popular features. It gives us a chance to interact with you, our readers, and provides us with the opportunity to learn about your favourite people, places, businesses and activities in the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Many of us have lived in this community for years. Over time, we tend to fall into habits, visiting the same stores and restaurants; attending the same events and activities; meeting with the same people and doing the same things. The A-List presents us with the perspective of our fellow citizens and we hope that it might inspire you to break from your routine and to try something new. It may also provide an entertaining diversion, informing us and helping us to discover local treasures that are found right here in our own backyard. We tend to take for granted what those in other communities may relish; although, our community hosts some of the best community events, we have some of the best golf courses to be found anywhere, we have shopping and dining facilities that are second to none. We have parks, swimming areas, ice rinks, sports
fields, arts centres, theatres, shopping centres, auto dealerships and a host of other amenities at our fingertips. Best of all, we are able to enjoy all of these amenities while surrounded by the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the local mountains, lakes and trails that are a short drive away. We live in a community where people truly care about each other. I have always found Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to be an area that gives back. From the Duck Race to the Founders Cup Charity Golf Classic, the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Community Foundations, the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, the Rotary Clubs, The Lion's Club, the Friends in Need Food Bank, and a host of other charitable organisations. The people in our communities are unfailingly generous. There are myriad reasons why we choose to live here, but we hope that by reading the A-List, you will find many more reasons to stay. Favourite charitable event People love the Terry Fox Run so much that 300 of them turned up in the pouring rain to take part in this year's event. And they raised $14,000 in doing so. The year before drew 427 participants, raising $16,497 for the foundation. This year, the 35th annual, featured a new route, starting and ending at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows. Voters next selected the Canada Day Run in Pitt Meadows. It is put on by Athletes in Kind and benefits the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents Association. Next was the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation Gala. The 27th annual event takes place later this month, and benefits the local hospital through donations leading to better patient care, faster diagnosis and more effective treatment for all.

• Cliff Falls Park The Cliff Falls area of Kanaka Creek in Maple Ridge offers an easy set of hiking trails, from the picnic area near the waterfalls to the Bell-Irving Hatchery. The park is a great location for families to spend a day in the outdoors during the summer.

The Kinsmen spray park is open to the public on a weather permitting, seasonal basis.

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest
Favourite piece of public art work The Beast, the landmark horse clock that has looked over Dewdney Trunk Road in downtown Maple Ridge since 1989, is your Favourite piece of public art work. Don Brayford, a former municipal manager of electro-mechanical operations, originally designed and built the aluminum horse for close to $60,000, but left no wiring diagrams behind. It was constructed from recycled materials with a Commodore 64' operating system, and originally featured a clock that chimed on the hour accompanied with the rearing of The Beast. Brayford envisioned the horse clock would represent local natural beauty and wrote a story called “The Legend of the Beast.” The Beast fell motionless in 2004 – after the Commodore 64 computer which controlled it crashed for good. The district then hired Ray Saunders, who built Gastown's famous steam clock, to fix it, costing the City or Maple Ridge more than $45,000. While the clock and its operating system has been modernized, The Beast no longer rears up. The metal leaves along Dewdney Trunk Road in west Maple Ridge are your second favourite. Beginning at just west of 203rd, seven decorative poles are installed in the median with metal maple leaf sculptures on the top of each. The poles were installed as decorative elements at the entrance to Maple Ridge. The colour of the leaves changes from green to yellow and orange as they move east.
The four mosaic street tiles in downtown Maple Ridge were your third Favourite piece of public art. The Maple Ridge Museum cooperated with the municipal engineering department by providing historically important themes for the mosaics, along with images from the archives. Like mosaics from ancient cultures created from coloured stones, the sidewalk decorations are made from durable ceramic tiles. The images and colours are symbolic, reminding us of our social history. All four of the new mosaics have the same border decorations, with maple leaves symbolizing the city's name. The green trees and mountain outlines represent important features of our geography, with the braided blue and white rope design standing for the Fraser River. One displays the proud military history of Maple Ridge, outside the former Bingoplex on 224th Street. The second one is a tribute to the community building efforts of pioneer Thomas Haney, featuring Haney House, a paddle wheeler on the waterfront, and two buildings that remain from the early days of Port Haney. The third theme, on Lougheed Highway, is the contribution of women’s groups to community life. The Women’s Institute made sure it had a well baby’s clinic, a public library and many other socially important activities.

Favourite local singers Madeline Merlo always knew she wanted to be a country music star and her dream is quickly becoming reality. After being signed to Open Road Recordings in 2013,
nominations for Female Artist of the Year and the Ray McCauley Horizon award at the 2014 BCCMAs. Fresh off her Rising Star award nomination from Canadian Country Music Association, Merlo is now touring Canada with Dean Brody and Paul Brandt. You’ll also find Merlo featured in Sparkle: An inspirational Handbook for Young Girls and can watch for her in the upcoming musical movie ‘Country Crush,’ due out later this year. Merlo has always had an eclectic taste in music, but her sound and style are grounded in the music she grew up on, the classic country of artists like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, R&B greats Etta James and Billy Holiday and modern superstars such as Miranda Lambert.

Favourite music teacher • Dana Cole-Luder Cole-Luder has performed leading roles in many musical theatre productions throughout Vancouver. “Dorothy” in The Wizard of Oz, “Maisie” in The Boyfriend, and “Tuptim” in The King and I are a few of her favourites. She earned a Best Actress Award for her role as Maisie. Cole-Luder is a graduate of the Douglas College classical music program and the Vancouver College jazz and musical theatre program. She is a professional voice instructor and teaches musical theatre and voice to dancers at performing arts schools in the Vancouver area including the Pulse Dance Centre and Peggy Peats in Maple Ridge.
• Keith Rogalsky Keith Rogalsky is a teacher at Harry Hooge Elementary who has been teaching kids music for about 20 years. Harry Hooge is fortunate to have an abundance of instruments, thanks to an active parent group, and that including ukuleles which he teachers to Grades four and five, and acoustic guitars that the students
graduate to as they reach grades six and seven. Then there are some electric guitars, bass guitars, a drum set and keyboards that help the kids put on a performance. Rogalsky has done ambitious projects like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and a variety of Christmas musicals like Surfin' Santa and Snow Biz. Rogalsky prefers the guitar as an instrument for children, because they play and sing. "The instrument you carry is your voice," he likes to tell them.

He has also been a guest conductor and trumpet coach at music camps, retreats, and concerts throughout the province. Ed Dumas has been voted “Maple Ridge’s Favourite Music Teacher” in
2008, 2009, and in 2010. Dumas has completed a Masters of Education project showing a relationship between small group playing and sight reading skills. His MRSS Senior Jazz Band scored a Gold rating at Con Brio Whistler Music Festival in 2014. He is also the musical director of the Maple Ridge Concert Band.
• Ed Dumas Ed Dumas’ teaching skills and love of music have made him a familiar face to thousands of young music students and adult musicians around British Columbia. Based in Maple Ridge, Dumas has been a secondary school music teacher and band conductor for more than 30 years. His bands have received numerous gold and silver awards at festivals around B.C. He currently conducts concert bands and jazz bands at Maple Ridge Secondary School as well as two

The Ridge Meadows Flames junior B hockey team was second on the voting list. The Flames formed at North Shore Winter Club in 1972, and moved to Maple Ridge in 1993. They won the PIJHL title in 1998, and the provincial championship, as well as gold at the Keystone Cup western Canadian championships.
Burrards were eliminated in the first round of the WLA playoffs this season, but the year before advanced to the league final. It was the first time in 23 years the club, which moved to Maple Ridge from Surrey in 1996, had advanced past the first round. The Burrards first formed in Vancouver in 1937 in the Inter-City Lacrosse League.
The Flames came second as host of the westerns in 2001. They just started the 2015-16 season and play home games Friday at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. The Maple Ridge

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest Doug Bing, MLA Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge One of my favourite places in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows is Golden Ears Provincial Park. As one of the largest parks in the province, Golden Ears Provincial Park is prized for its recreational opportunities. Whenever I go there I can feel the stress melt away as the green forests come into view and our busy urban environment starts to fade. It is a great place for families and there is something there for everyone to enjoy regardless of age or vigor. The extensive system of trails within the park provides an excellent
opportunity for short walks, easy or strenuous backcountry hikes, and even horseback riding. Water activities are very popular and Alouette Lake is an in-demand spot for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing. The park also has three large campgrounds, which are very popular, and often filled to capacity on summer weekends. The mountainous backcountry is extremely rugged and a photographer’s delight. For the more adventurous, there are challenging trails that take you to the summit of the Golden Ears massif. Views from the top are panoramic and spectacular, overlooking the Fraser Valley to the south and surrounding peaks.

Showstoppers Academy is a performing arts school in Maple Ridge, dedicated to training students in the art of musical theatre. With a positive and constructive environment, students are encouraged to develop and grow as performers. The school trains its students in dance, voice and acting to make them a “triple threat” and, more importantly, gain self confidence and the skills needed to work with a team.
This year, Showstoppers staged Annie Jr. and Disney's High School Musical. Its 2015 lineup includes Beauty and The Beast, which will play at the ACT April 23 to April 25 and Hairspray, which also plays the ACT May 8 and May 9.

Favourite place to walk, run, jog, hike, or walk your dog. The Dykes are your Favourite place to do all of the above. Since the first settlers arrived in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Dykes have been an important topic locally. Much of the area’s land couldn’t be settled without them due to the risk of flooding and the marshy ground. The first significant group to try and reclaim the lower ground in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows was the British Columbia Drainage and Dyking Company. The company was formed in 1888 by three wellknown businessmen and politicians and purchased 17,000 acres of Pitt Meadows land. It wasn’t able to raise sufficient capital to dyke the entire area, so it focused on two 1,000-acre parcels that became known as the Pitt Meadows Number One and Number Two Dyking Districts. Construction on those Dykes started in 1891. The early dyking efforts had substantial impacts on local affairs, though. Pitt Meadows landowners were largely in favour of early dyking efforts and wanted financial help from the municipality of Maple Ridge, which Pitt Meadows was part of at that time. Aid was initially promised, then later revoked, angering the Pitt Meadows residents. They separated from Maple Ridge in 1896 and incorporated their own municipality in 1914.
The Maple Ridge Dyking District was formed in 1892. Most of the land it encompassed was actually in Pitt Meadows, but the name was used to differentiate it from the existing Pitt Meadows Dyking Districts. It resulted in the construction of a 14.3 mile dyke in 1893 at an original cost of $85,000. But the dyke had similar problems to the earlier ones in the Pitt Meadows districts and was inundated during floods. Repair and improvement costs spiraled, and the district was $220,000 in debt by 1904. Several additional dyking attempts were made over the years, including a 1909 effort by William Rannie and a 1923 attempt by the Seattle firm of Cameron and MacDougall, but little progress occurred until the arrival of Dr. Jan Blom in 1949. Blom, a Dutchman, was in Canada to oversee the sale of lands held by the Holland-based Transatlantic Mortgage Company, and he was invited to tour the Pitt Meadows area. He saw the potential of the land and bought nearly 7,000 acres for $40,000 in 1950. Originally, he estimated that the land could be reclaimed for around $300,000, but his company wound up having to invest nearly $3 million. By the end of the 1960s, though, they completed their extensive dyking projects. Today, there are several popular walking trails on the Dykes, and the diversity of wildlife in the area makes it important for trail users to be careful.

Shantz, a notable lawyer in Maple Ridge, passed away in August after complications following surgery for an aneurism. Shantz was the organizer of the annual Rotary Duck Race, which raises thousands of dollars for youth sports projects in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Shantz was also the founding member of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, and former president of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society, as well as a past director of the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. visited, adding to the things I like about our communities. Notwithstanding the many other favoured features of our communities, Pitt Lake is my personal favourite place in the world. While parts of the lake are accessible only by water, there are many trails and other features surrounding the lake which draw me back as though caught in its mysterious and magical spell. The ferocity of winter around Pitt Lake belies its normal gentleness in summer, but the best time to visit the lake is fall when the autumn colours paint a scene like only Mother Nature can and the migrating flocks of waterfowl fill the sky with their raucous honking and quacking.

One of my Favourite spots for that is along Neaves Road, at the south end of the North Alouette River Bridge. Driving north towards Pitt Lake, you’d pull over on the east side, turn off the engine, and look out the passenger window at a pond the river fills and empties with the tides.

The Sampo Hall will be 100 years old soon and one can still find the odd sauna in the older residential areas.

I love Whonnock for its spirited defense of its identity – refusing to give up the postal address that will be 130 years old in 2015. The general store and post office are little changed from the 1930s.

I love Hammond for its exuberant sense of community and pulling together. Always seen as somewhat the poor cousin of the other neighbourhoods, its people have always acted like a community, centred around a mill, school and baseball. I love Port Haney for its mighty struggle to retain some sense of itself amidst the onslaught of modern times and development pressure. The old brick church, the Billy Miner Pub and Haney House all stand as reminders of a more coherent past.
