KPU SCRAPS PIPELINE DEAL ▶ UNIVERSITY CITES FIRST NATION’S CONCERN OVER AGREEMENT WITH KINDER MORGAN FOR $300K IF PROJECT IS APPROVED JEFF NAGEL

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has pulled out of an agreement with Kinder Morgan that would have seen the institution collect $300,000 in benefits over 20 years if the Trans Mountain pipeline is approved.

The deal announced in June had come under fire from students, environmentalists and the First Nation after which the university is named.

“My decision to withdraw KPU from this agreement was made out of respect for the Kwantlen First Nation’s right to argue its case before the National Energy Board (NEB) regarding this pipeline expansion project,” KPU President and Vice-Chancellor Alan Davis said Friday in an

emailed statement.

The Kwantlen band is an intervener in the NEB hearings, which are to resume this fall.

“Our longstanding relationship with the Kwantlen First Nation is fundamental to the university’s history and identity,” Davis said after an Oct. 2 meeting with aboriginal leaders. “I heard their concerns and I have acted on them as quickly as possible.”

Asked if the university might still renew the benefits agreement in the future – possibly after a final recommendation on the Trans Mountain project by the NEB – a spokesperson only said: “At this point, KPU is focusing on its relationship with the Kwantlen First Nation.”

Trans Mountain has already struck benefits deals totaling $5 million with 18 municipalities along the pipeline route. They’re contingent on final pipeline approval and aim to provide project legacies while also demonstrating local support.

The money for Kwantlen was to consist mainly of scholarships and bursaries for KPU trades and technology students, and to help fund KPU’s Environmental Protection Technology lab, with potential naming rights flowing to the pipeline company.

KPU students had argued the agreement amounted to a tacit endorsement of a pipeline that posed unacceptable risks and would have gone against the university’s sustainability mandate.

Kwantlen Student Association president Allison Gonzalez said she was “thrilled” and “proud” of KPU’s decision to respect Kwantlen First Nation concerns and rescind the agreement.

The hope is that when TransLink finally closes the last gates, so many passengers will already be tapping that it will be more of a baby step than a massive shift.

McLay envisions early next year to complete the switch,.

“How fast that takes off is how quickly we’re going to migrate off the traditional products,” she said.

Even after the last gates close, Compass vending machines will still sell single-use paper tickets that open the gates for infrequent users who don’t want to get a card.

About 225,000 Compass cards have been issued so far, with 110,000 in regular use – most of those are held by West Coast Express passengers and students with U-Passes who were converted over the summer.

But the number of Compass users is expected to rapidly climb towards an eventual 800,000 as the cards become widely available.

The cards will be widely available at 350 retail outlets that are fare dealers by November.

A Surrey man who killed three people in three separate attacks in 2013 has received a mandatory life sentence and can’t apply for parole for at least 18 years.

Sarbjit Bains pleaded guilty in April to killing Delta’s Amritpal Saran, 29, and two woman from New Westminster – Jill Lyons, 45 and Karen Nabors, 48.

On Wednesday (Sept. 30), Bains was handed a life sentence in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. Justice Miriam Maisonville set his parole eligibility at 18 years, meaning he is not allowed to apply for release before 2033. At that time, it would be up to the Parole Board of Canada whether or not to grant any type of release from prison.

The court heard that on the night Saran was killed in February 2013, he, Bains and Bains’ girlfriend, Evelina Urbaniak, were partying together, drinking and doing drugs. While details are limited, lawyers submitted an agreed statement saying Bains and Saran kept partying after Urbaniak went to bed. Bains left to go to the bathroom and when he returned, found Saran naked in Urbaniak’s bedroom and “snapped.” He choked Saran to death and he

and Urbaniak later disposed of the body on Colebrook Road.

It was about six months later, in August 2013, that Lyons was found dead in an apartment complex in New Westminster.

Thirteen days later, the body of Nabors was discovered in the same building.

During sentencing, it was revealed Bains had planned to rob both women – who advertised online as escorts – but ended up killing both. Nabors and Lyons were friends with one another and both had children.

Bains was arrested and charged with all three murders in January 2014. In the spring of this year, he pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Lyons and Nabors and to the lesser charge of manslaughter in Saran’s death.

Second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence. A 10-year sentence for the manslaughter conviction will be served concurrently. Bains’ sentence also includes a lifetime mandatory firearms prohibition.

Life sentence for Surrey triple killer

A “colossal” intake of alcohol was to blame for an otherwise “gentle, law-abiding” Surrey man fatally stabbing his spouse’s son nearly three years ago, according to a B.C. Supreme Court judge.

William Engebretsen, 56, was sentenced to four years jail after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the November 2012 death of 33-year-old Jeremy McLellan.

Justice Robin Baird’s oral reasons for sentence from July 8 were posted online last week, detailing what happened the night McLellan died.

According to court documents, it was Grey Cup Sunday – Nov. 25, 2012 – and McLellan had dropped by the home of Engebretsen and his common-law partner of 20 years. McLellan was the son of Engebretsen’s longtime spouse. Engebretsen had known him since he was 10.

McLellan and his mom were watching TV in the apartment when Engebretsen emerged from the bedroom, where he had been drinking most of the day and napping. He told the two he wanted to watch the Grey Cup when one of them answered “if you ask nicely, maybe we’ll do it.” Engebretsen went to the kitchen to make a frozen pizza.

Without warning, Engebretsen then went to his bedroom and picked up an “enormous” knife he’d bought at a rummage sale, went back into the living room and stabbed McLellan once in the heart.

He died about an hour later.

Justice Baird said he had no insight into what was going through Engebretsen’s head or what motivated him, but that the “mystery is compounded” by numerous letters from the killer’s family, friends and employers saying he is a gentle, peace-loving man with no history of violence.

Baird did, however, refer to an acrimonious relationship with McLellan that sometimes caused a rift between Engebretsen and his spouse. He did not want McLellan around but his mother did.

That ongoing conflict, fuelled by “extreme” drunkenness, caused McLellan’s mom to not only lose

her son that night, but her best friend and marriage.

Engebretsen’s blood alcohol level was 292 mg/100 ml of blood. A person

with 80 mg/100 ml would be considered too impaired to drive in B.C. His lawyer said a significant portion of the population

would have died from such extreme alcohol over-consumption.

Engebretsen has not had a drink since the stabbing.

The Conservatives will win the election either with a majority or minority government.

The Liberals will become the official Opposition party.

The NDP will become the third party in Parliament.

‘Traffic nightmare’ on SFPR ▼ POOR PLANNING IS TO BLAME Re: Inconvenient, dangerous and wasteful design of the Highway 17 (South Fraser Perimeter Road –SFPR) and 91 Connector intersection.

Being a resident of North Delta, I often experience the inconvenience of the poor design of the diversion of traffic travelling east or west on River Road. For example, if wanting to travel west on River Road, one has to divert to Nordel Way, then to the 91 Connector, then 96 Street, and then finally River Road again.

Now the problem is that the traffic is funnelled to 91 Connector from River Road, Nordel Way (both directions) and Alex Fraser Bridge to proceed west toward the Tsawwassen ferry and Ladner, either via River Road or through SFPR. Problematic is the intersection of 91 Connector and Highway 17. This intersection slows the traffic in all directions. This is a big inconvenience

and a clogging point for motorists travelling in all directions.

I am wondering what the planners were thinking when they drew this project on paper and finalized it.

Another thing which is difficult to understand is why River Road has been closed in the 9924-block, thus

compounding the problem.

If one has to access 9925 River Road, then one has to take a loop of a couple of kilometres and endure five busy intersection lights, including the notorious one of 91 Connector and Highway 17.

Even if you simply want to continue on River Road in either direction, one has to take the above-mentioned loop.

This adds time, inconvenience and frustration.

Here comes the dangerous part of this poor planning. When you are turning right from the 91 Connector to Highway 17 towards Hope, the slope of the road is contrary to accommodate the pull of the centrifugal force, thus causing the vehicle to tip over, especially big trucks. Adding insult to injury is that this right turn is particularly sharp. An almost identical hazard is present if big rigs are making a left turn from 91 Connector to Highway 17 towards Tsawwassen.

This was a massive waste of money in terms of poor planning and lack of knowledge of the needs of the local residents and motorists in general by the Ministry of Transportation. Something needs to be done to address and correct this traffic nightmare.

A brief history of health care spending BC VIEWS ▼ Tom Fletcher

The federal budget document began with an ominous warning about deep cuts. Social programs, justice and corrections would be spared as much as possible, but no department would escape the knife.

The stark truth was revealed in a table of figures. Health care spending, the core of the Canadian state, was cut by 3.8 per cent in just the first year of the fiscal plan, as population and need continued to grow.

No, this is not from the Stephen Harper budget of April 2015, or any other in the last decade. It’s from the Jean Chretien budget of 1995, more than 20 years ago. That’s the last time anyone actually cut health care spending.

But wait, you may say. Didn’t I hear that Harper has slashed health care spending by $30 billion? Yes, you probably did hear the biggest, most brazen lie of this election campaign, either from the government unions that advertised it or the politicians who parrot it.

If health care really is everyone’s

high-priority issue, as pollsters have long assured us, voters should at least know the facts.

After cutting provincial health and social services transfers for years to end the string of operating deficits that began under Pierre Trudeau and continued under Brian Mulroney, Liberal finance minister Paul Martin rose briefly to the top job.

In 2004, Martin staged meetings with premiers, emerging with what was billed as “a fix for a generation,” with federal health transfers to rise six per cent each year into the future.

The future for Martin’s government lasted only two years, as his minority was replaced with one led by Harper.

These galloping increases continued until the Conservative majority of 2011, after which then-finance minister Jim Flaherty came to Victoria to inform provincial finance ministers of the new plan. (I was there, and the joke was that this was as far from Ottawa as Flaherty could get without leaving Canada).

The six-per-cent increases, by that

time triple inflation, would continue for another five years. Starting in 2017-18, increases would be tied to economic growth, with a minimum hike of three per cent, still well ahead of today’s inflation. That remains the Conservative plan today.

All provinces east of Saskatchewan pitched a fit. Manitoba’s NDP finance minister termed it “un-Canadian.”

Lefties immediately called it a cut, to which Flaherty replied that transfers to provinces would rise from $30 billion to $38 billion in 2018-19, and continue to grow after that.

In B.C., then-finance minister Kevin Falcon praised the long-term approach, acknowledging that health spending was ballooning to half of the provincial budget and had to be brought under control as baby boomers start to retire. B.C. has largely accomplished that, with spending increases below three per cent and health care outcomes that continue to lead the country.

As the current election campaign turns into the home stretch, Statistics Canada has announced a milestone.

For the first time in history, the number of seniors exceeds number of children. This demographic shift is inexorable, predictable and must be addressed by whoever wins the Oct. 19 federal election.

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair is on record that he will scrap the Conservative formula for growth-based increases that he pretends are cuts, returning to six per cent every year while balancing the budget. Little detail has been provided on how this would be done.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau announced in Surrey last week that he will ante up an extra $3 billion over four years for health care, and “sit down with the provinces immediately” to renegotiate, a rerun of Paul Martin’s political theatre.

▼ FOUND: NEW LAPTOPS FOR SURREY SEARCH AND RESCUE The Cloverdale London Drugs computer department has donated eight HP laptop computers to the Surrey Search and Rescue Society (SSAR).

The laptops will be used to develop and maintain operation plans and exercises, to organize inventory equipment and supplies, to communicate with city and municipal stakeholders and keep track of volunteers’ hours and training certifications.

“The Surrey Search and Rescue team is volunteer-run, and this donation will be a benefit to our team members,” said Larry Kost, Surrey Search and Rescue vice-president, during the presentation.

“Over the years, the number of SSAR operations in the Lower Mainland has increased dramatically and this trend is continuing as the population in the Lower Mainland increases. SSAR has felt the effects of this increase in operations and consequently the team must continually maintain, expand, and upgrade their equipment.”

SSAR is a registered, non-profit society staffed solely by volunteers.

SSAR provides 24-hours a day, 365-days per year emergency response assistance to local communities through the RCMP, municipal police, fire departments, BC Ambulance Service, BC Parks and the Provincial Emergency Program in Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Richmond.

Their calls range from searching for missing children to locating lost persons suffering mental or physical distress.

▶ CYCLING FOR LUNG HEALTH Surrey’s Kristen Spicker joined 300 cyclists and volunteers in the BC Lung Association’s 31st-annual Bicycle Trek for Life and Breath – a two-day, 200-km scenic ride from White Rock to Cultus Lake and back, all in support of lung health. Over three decades, participants have raised more than $6 million for the BC Lung Association – along with close to $200,000 this year.

Baking and biking in the fight against cancer BLACK PRESS

Surrey RCMP Const. Mark Peterse admits not too many people can say they have been on both sides of the donut counter as a bakery owner and police officer.

Now he can add spandex to his list of uniforms, after he completed his 800-kilometre bike ride for the 2015 Cops for Cancer – Tour de Valley on Oct. 2.

Peterse is well acquainted with the preparation and training involved for the tour, having trained to do the ride as an auxiliary constable with the Langley RCMP in 2013.

But a phone call from Depot in Regina one week before the ride changed his plans.

Fast forward two years, and he is getting his chance to ride as a member of the Surrey RCMP. Growing up, Peterse lost his best friend to cancer. Ever since, he has been committed to raising funds for cancer research and support programs.

Juggling the shift work of general duty policing, family life, and bike training isn’t always easy. He credits his fellow riders, support crew, colleagues, and family and most importantly, the kids undergoing cancer treatments, with helping him keep it all in perspective.

“When I am struggling with those early mornings or pushing up a big hill on the bike, I remember the kids undergoing chemo and radiation who don’t complain,” he said before the ride. “Seeing their bravery, their resilience – I know I can do this ride to support treatment and a week at Camp Goodtimes to allow them to be kids again.”

Peterse has also baked his way into riders’ hearts and stomachs by providing sandwiches and snacks from his Langley bakery (his maple bacon donuts are said to be a rider favourite.)

Peterse is joined by Surrey RCMP Aux. Const. Zoe Johnston and 20 other riders from the law enforcement and emergency personnel community for the ride, which began on Sept. 24.

“The funds they raise go towards childhood cancer research and Camp Goodtimes, a place kids and families go to smile and connect with others facing the same struggles.”

“Under Prime Minister (Stephen) Harper we will continue to address threats to our national security and help protect the innocent people from the violence and brutality of ISIS.”

The fourth of a series: Over the coming weeks, The Leader will continue to shine a spotlight on candidates in each of this area’s six federal ridings: Surrey-Newton, Fleetwood-Port Kells, Surrey-Centre, Cloverdale-Langley City, South Surrey-White Rock and Delta. The stories can also be read online at surreyleader.com South Surrey-White Rock is a new riding consisting of the Semiahmoo Peninsula portion of the previous South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale riding, thanks to reorganization of boundaries in 2013.

Although the boundaries have been redrawn numerous times, the Peninsula has long been considered a stronghold for representatives of Canada’s conservative parties (including the former Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance).

Former MP Russ Hiebert – who declined to run again after being area representative since 2004 – successfully weathered storms over being “parachuted” into the riding, a scandal over high personal expenses in 20082009 (highest that year for a B.C. MP and the second-highest in Canada), and discontent among long-time Conservatives in the area which came to a head in early 2011.

But it appears that a majority of voters in the area have also, latterly, voted for the party and the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper – for whom Hiebert was a staunch supporter, although never chosen for a cabinet post.

The big question in the riding for the 2015 election is whether the charisma of Conservative candidate Dianne Watts will bolster the party’s appeal to local voters, or whether opponents will successfully exploit anti-Harper sentiment in the community – particularly over perceptions of federal inaction on environmental concerns – or simply split the non-Conservative vote.

Watts is running against Judy Higginbotham (Liberal), Pixie Hobby (NDP), Larry Colero (Green party), Brian Marlatt (Progressive Canadian party) and Bonnie Hu (Libertarian).

Watts, a popular former Surrey mayor, is a 23-year resident of South Surrey.

Liberal candidate Judy Higginbotham is a 40-year resident of the Semiahmoo Peninsula area, and was a member of Surrey council for 25 years.

Also a past provincial candidate, she bowed out of municipal politics for runs at federal office in 1988, 2004 and 2008, but returned for a run as an independent candidate for Surrey councillor in 2011.

She believes her experience gives her a strong sense of issues that resonate with local voters.

“We really are seeing some local issues emerge in this campaign,” she says. “One is seniors’ care, and there are also a lot of young families who want to move into the area but find it difficult to afford.

“It’s how to deal with middle-class families – to shift the (tax) burden from people who really need help to the top one per cent.”

She also says that providing transportation is very important to people in South Surrey and White Rock.

The Liberals are promising $125 billion for transportation over the next 10 years, with $20 billion of that earmarked specifically for public transit.

“We need to provide appropriate transportation so that people can get around; so children can get to school and seniors can get to where they need to go.”

Higginbotham says that White Rock priorities such as railroad relocation could also be included in a Liberal federal infrastructure program.

But Higginbotham says she has found that local voters have been antagonized by what she describes as Conservative “fear-mongering.”

“I’ve heard from more people who are appalled by the drop-off of (Watts’) brochure and the way it was targeted at seniors to (frighten) them, as though her party was the only one who would deal with this issue.

NDP candidate Pixie Hobby has been a Crescent Beach resident for 16 years.

A lawyer and passionate environmentalist, she worked on the writing and implementation of Canada’s Environmental Assessment Act during a 32-year career with the Department of Justice.

Hobby says she has been made aware that a lot of South Surrey and White Rock voters have concerns about providing proper services for seniors and veterans.

“Particularly those who are having a lot of trouble coping,” she says.

She, too, has heard a lot of negative reaction to Watts ant-terrorist campaign leaflets among visitors coming to her campaign office.

“The overriding issue is a very strong ‘anyone but Harper’ sentiment – and it’s significant that Watts is now attending a number of all-candidates meetings that she had earlier indicated she would not attend,” she says.

“We’ve heard from a lot of people, including those who previously voted Conservative, that they are looking at voting strategically this time around and that we stand the best chance of defeating the Conservatives.”

Hobby says she took the opportunity to campaign for the NDP because she has been dismayed at

the “dismantling” of environmental safeguards by the Harper government.

She says the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon have refused to build coal shipping facilities with the result that “dirt coal” for Wyoming is now being transported through B.C. for shipment to China.

She says the use of such fuels must be of local as well as national concern, and that NDP proposals to “cap and trade” emissions by the worst polluters stand the best chance of discouraging such use in the long term.

“Greenhouse gases don’t respect geographical boundaries,” she says.

The environment is naturally a concern to Green party candidate Larry Colero, who describes himself as a “semi-retired business ethics consultant and long-time social justice and peace advocate.”

But he also says that the Green party – long described as a “one issue party” – does have one overriding issue – restoring democracy in Canada.

He has likened Conservative legislation to the “double-speak” created

by George Orwell in the dystopian novel 1984, in which laws have the opposite purpose to their ostensible reason.

Colero, who ran for the Green party in the 2011 federal election,

has also adopted a “contrarian” approach to his current campaigning – choosing not to place lawn signs, distribute flyers, or “interrupt dinners with door-to-door visits.”

Colero says he chose to run again for the Greens because he doesn’t trust any of the other parties to do what they say they will once in power.

“Only the Green party publishes a detailed and comprehensive policy platform between elections,” he says.

For Brian Marlatt, a freelance writer on science and public policy issues, this election campaign is his fourth run for the Progressive Canadian party (the others were in 2006, 2008 and 2011).

Like other party members, he is a former Progressive Conservative who feels that Stephen Harper and the current Conservative party have taken “Tory” politics far from the principles espoused by nation-builder Sir John A. Mac-

donald. (Marlatt’s conservative roots include being a member of the Progressive Conservative Policy Advisory Committee to the Tory BC Executive Council, focused on parliamentary and democratic reform from 1998 to 2003).

He says the Progressive Canadian party is a “party of nation-building, national vision and national unity,” and among national campaign platform issues are sustainable universal health care; affordable education; removing partisanship from Parliament and the senate; hightech, green infrastructure renewal; and fair treatment of veterans.

As a writer of academic articles on historical natural disaster research and mitigation, Marlatt says that top local issues include the preservation of the environment.

“I believe the English Bay oil spill was a wake-up call for us on the West Coast including us, here on the Peninsula, where a coal-train spill into Boundary Bay is a real concern.”

He has also written about what he terms the “genuine threat” of human-induced global warming causing climate change, contrasting the scientific consensus and past Progressive Conservative action on the issue with what he characterizes as “Harper denials” and “the frustration of Kyoto initiatives, rather than building on them.”

“I believe the top campaign issues in South Surrey-White Rock are the environment, property rights, and international trade,” she says.

“Specifically, there has been public concern about the expansion of coal exports to foreign countries from British Columbia’s ports – trains and ships travelling through and around Surrey and White Rock will be used in the transport of coal.”

Hu says that while the Libertarian party stands for free trade and private property rights, “a balance needs to be found between the economic benefits and job creation generated by the coal industry, and the environmental and health impacts feared by residents.”

“I believe harm and property damage as a result of pollution would be more efficiently eviscerated through the judicial system instead of government regulation,” she says.

Solving crime isn’t as easy as simply throwing more police on the streets, according to the Conservative candidate for Surrey-Centre.

More has to be done tackling associated problems such as mental illness, addictions and homelessness, which have to be addressed at

all levels of government, says resident Sucha Thind.

Thind, a 59-year-old retired businessman who lives in South Surrey, says crime is the paramount issue in Surrey-Centre.

He says he’s knocked on “every door in the riding” and says many people are afraid to answer until the candidate shows identification.

He’s witnessed elected officials blaming other levels of government, which accomplishes nothing, he says.

“All levels of government have to work

together,” Thind says, adding “the community really needs to get involved.”

In addition, stricter laws need to be passed by the federal government so when people commit serious crimes, they will serve serious time, he says.

“We need tougher penalties and tougher laws.”

Thind also believes transportation is a huge issue in the riding.

People are concerned about the state of the Pattullo Bridge and the lack of effective transit.

He recognizes the

Pattullo Bridge is TransLink’s responsibility, but believes all levels of government can encourage faster action on its upgrade.

He also points to the federal Conservatives’ promise to invest $700 million toward the construction of Light Rail Transit in Surrey.

Thind says the third most important issue in the riding is education.

He says more facilities and teachers are needed.

Though education is a provincial issue, Thind says the federal government can play an important role in advocat-

“At least you can raise the issue and say ‘these are the concerns that my constituents have’,” Thind says.

He stresses in all instances, governments need to work together to solve problems.

Thind was invited to be part of The Leader’s riding coverage for Surrey-Centre in the Oct. 2 edition of the newspaper, but did not return calls by press time.

Thind is running against NDP MP Jasbir Sandhu, the Liberals’ Randeep Sarai, the Greens’ Jeremiah Deneault, Christian Heritage Party’s Kevin Pielak and the Communists’ Iqbal Kahlon.

Moderator Frank Bucholtz made it clear an audience member’s question at the conclusion of last Tuesday’s all-candidates meeting at Crescent United Church didn’t require an answer.

But it was audibly appreciated by an audience who had spent two hours listening to South Surrey-White Rock federal candidates Larry Colero (Green Party), Pixie Hobby (NDP) and Judy Higginbotham (Liberal) give their views on climate change and end-of-life choices. “Will the three of you get together to pick only one to run in this election?� he asked, to general laughter and applause.

The more than 200 people attending the forum, organized by the South Fraser Unitarian Congregation and Crescent United, heard more agreement than debate among candidates.

While they differed on for whom voters should cast their ballots, they were unified in their belief that the route to

what they see as necessary change in Canada is the removal of Prime Minister Stephen Harper from the helm. “This isn’t much of a debate is it?� Colero quipped at one point, going on later to say he was unsure whether to call the other candidates “colleagues,� “opponents� or “friends.�

Conservative candidate Dianne Watts and Libertarian Bonnie Hu did not attend the meeting, which did, however, receive a brief visit from just-announced Progressive Canadian Party candidate Brian Marlatt, who read a statement in which he, too, left no doubt that his party seeks change in Ottawa.

Colero told the audience in introductory remarks that while the Green Party is focused on environmental issues such as opposing the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the shipping of “oily sludge� along B.C.’s coast and the transportation of thermal coal through communities, it is also committed to “never have a party whip, and never insist that MPs

Later, noting that the Green Party has been accused of being a “one issue party� – Colero said the party’s one overriding issue was “returning democracy to Canada.�

The other candidates were also not slow to take shots at the Conservative government.

Higginbotham said the Conservatives had “forgotten� the importance of climate change.

In discussing the need for investment in infrastructure to improve transportation and remove gridlock, she said that a Liberal government will not only invest millions in building transportation corridors, but will also improve communication

Hobby said the NDP will end the “subsidies Harper has been giving to the fossil fuel industry� in favour of investing money in stimulating a green economy, adding that the NDP is proposing to deliver $1.3 billion “directly to municipalities for transportation.�

In other discussion, the three candidates on the dais spoke almost as one on the need for environmental protection and investing in innovation and the development of green technologies both locally and globally.

Hobby said the challenges of protecting the environment should be seen as “an opportunity to review our economic stance� and find new and better ways of doing business. “We don’t have to choose between a strong economy and a clean environment,� she said. “The two go hand in hand.�

All three candidates expressed support for the Supreme Court decision to allow individuals to choose physician-assisted suicide in cases where pain and suffering are intolerable and the wishes of a competent terminally ill patient have been made clear.
