Situated behind tidy rows of bagged veggies and herbs, Kelowna’s Curtis Stone looks like any number of the vendors at the Kelowna Farmers’ Market—a source for healthy local food, at a reasonable price.

What his inauspicious Saturday digs don’t indicate, however, is that he’s a man whose time has come.

Stone has been singing the praises of urban farming practices he uses to make a living

for years.

He’s been a fixture with local news organizations looking for an angle on a worldwide phenomenon and a guest speaker on the topic at forums across the globe.

Now he’s adding author to his list of accomplishments, with a book set to be released next month.

“I’ve written a technical manual intended to be a blueprint for what I do on my farm because there’s a lot of interest around the world,” he said Saturday, as people milled

around his stall at the farmers’ market.

“People look at my farm, because it’s profitable for its size, and think, ‘I want to do that.’”

With 1/3 of an acre, Stone takes in $70,000-plus in seasonal returns.

“That’s unheard of in farming, and that’s really what the book is about—production and business methods of urban farming,” he said.

His particular method to urban farming takes a leap from the Spin Farming method he once was an instructor of, going into

deeper detail about how to set up irrigation systems, turn over land and find a steady supply of customers.

It’s a message he believes many will want to hear not only because of its financial returns, but also because of the precarious place western civilization has found itself.

“There has never been a time in history that we know of, where there have been fewer farmers in the world,” he said.

Liberal taunt draws feisty NDP reaction Alistair Waters

Bowman said the NDP will raise much of the money it needs for promised programs, such as more daycare spaces at a maximum of $15 per day by increasing taxes on big corporations to 17 per cent from 15 per cent and working with the provinces.

Cannan touted his party’s plans to fund infrastructure across Canada, calling the program the biggest investment in infrastructure this country has ever seen. In doing so, he cited a long list of local projects that have received federal money.

He said that was part of the reason he ran for MP in the first place, to make sure this community received as many federal dollars for programs as possible.

Fuhr, a retired Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, said growth and jobs are the main issues in this election. He said the Liberals will fund programs aimed at increasing jobs so families have options when it comes to issue like daycare.

Both he and Bowman, a professor at Okanagan College, repeatedly said that under the federal Conservative government, Canada has lost 400,000 jobs since 2006.

The all-candidates’ meeting was originally planned to be a joint meeting for both the Kelowna-Lake Country and Central Okanagan-SimilkameenNicola candidates. But it ended up limited to just the Kelowna-Lake Country candidates after Conservative Dan Albas initially, followed by the other three Central-Okanagan-SimilkameenNicola candidates, choosing to attend a meeting in Summerland instead, said Jeannette Mergens, with the Canadian University Women’s Club, which organized the Kelowna meeting.

In the end, it was at the end that the sparks finally flew.

Two of the three candidates seeking election in Kelowna-Lake Country left it to their wrap-up remarks Monday during an all-candidates meeting to take direct shots at each other.

Liberal Stephen Fuhr started it when, in appealing for support, he told the audience there is no way the NDP will form the next federal government and locally, no way NDP candidate Norah Bowman would attract moderate Conservatives—who he called the “Conservative swing vote”— who are fed up with their party’s leader Stephen Harper.

The remarks brought loud boos from Bowman’s supporters in the crowd of about 100 people at the Kelowna Seniors’ Society Centre.

Not to be outdone, Bowman, when she was given her turn at the microphone, shot back, reminding the audience the NDP had 103 seats in the last Parliament compared to the Liberals 34.

And she didn’t stop there, blasting Liberal leader Justin Trudeau as someone who has not stood up to Harper in the past. “How can he stand up to someone like (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin if he can’t stand up to Harper?,” said Bowman to cheers from her supporters.

Meanwhile, the man Fuhr and Bowman are trying to unseat, Conservative incumbent Ron Cannan, avoided the fray, sticking to listing achievements for the riding since he was first elected MP in 2006.

The exchange between Fuhr and Bowman capped a 90-minute question and answer session that allowed the three candidates to tell the audience what their respective parties would do on a wide range issues including climate change, funding science, help for Canada’s aboriginal people, poverty and even the CBC. All three claimed to love the CBC and their parties would support it. The Conservative government has been criticized in the past for budget cuts to the CBC. Both Bowman and Cannan stressed their party’s plans to balance the budget, while Fuhr defended his party’s plan to run a deficit budget for three more years to fund tax cuts for the middle class that he said, will help in a number of ways.

A home invasion and shooting that rattled a Lake Country neighbourhood Sunday night shouldn’t cause community concern, say the Mounties.

“Home invasions are rarely random. From what I’ve read in this file the (alleged perpetrator) knew who these people were and there was some connection along the way, but (the victims) don’t know who it is,” said Cpl. Joe Duncan, media spokesperson.

“The general public isn’t at any

risk.”

As for the victims, a 61-year-old woman who was tied up during the invasion and a 65-year-old man who sustained a bullet wound during the crime, Cpl. Duncan indicated they were being cared for.

The man had surgery at Kelowna General Hospital and is healing from an injury to his buttocks.

Meanwhile, the investigation is ongoing, although the file will likely be transferred out of the hands of Kelowna RCMP and given to the Southeast District.

The Tyndall Road incident was reported to Lake Country RCMP at

11:33 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4.

A victim indicated that two masked men entered a home with a gun, tied up a woman resident and injured a man.

An RCMP police dog was called in to try and find the men and forensic identification officers were also called to the scene.

FALL IRRIGATION MAINTENANCE

Your irrigation system requires routine maintenance in order to keep working properly. Maintenance checks should be the same as the ones performed in the spring; basically check for leaks, plugged nozzles, replace broken parts and adjust sprinkler heads properly as they may have been knocked out of their proper alignment by animals or other means.

You will want to adjust your run times as the sun is coming up later naturally and is not as strong at this time of the year. The amount of time to decrease will depend on many factors such as sun exposure or soil type for example. A good rule of thumb is to decrease it about 30% and monitor your plants and lawn.

As we happen to live in a northern climate where freezing occurs, now is a good time to plan to have your irrigation system winterized. This is done by draining the lines and valves of water. The most common method to do this is to use a compressor to force air through the lines and valves to flush all the water out of your system. It is wise to use a professional irrigation contractor to perform this maintenance as the use of too much pressure through your lines can damage your system resulting in expensive repairs in the spring when you restart the system.

Another safeguard for your system would be that once your water is turned off to your irrigation and your system is blown out, that you put a warning on your on/off valve to ensure that the water is not accidentally turned on again before spring. If the water is accidentally turned on, water will enter your system and can damage the lines and valves which will also result in expensive repairs.

“This year 160 scarecrows were made, with 25 pre-made and the rest built at the festival.

The scarecrows continue to be the highlight event of the community festival, as some people have been coming back

since year one to see if they can out-do what they accomplished the previous year.

“This is a free event for the community,” D’Andrea said.

“Building scarecrows brings companies together, it brings people together and it brings families together.

“We had beautiful weather, exercise is good and it’s a fun way to get people out here to have a good time and experience what Rutland has to offer.”

‘Farmers are dying and there are no people to replace them’ “Fewer than two per cent of people know how to farm, and the average age of a farmer is 60 years old…Farmers are dying and there are no people to replace them.”

The replacement issue comes down to the fact that becoming a farmer is increasingly expensive.

The challenge for new farmers, he explained, is surmounting financial hurdles. Land, especially in B.C., costs a mint and supplies required to farm are also cost-prohibitive.

“So I have shown people that you don’t need to buy land…get that whole thing out of your head, that’s the first barrier we get past,” he said. “Then we look at scaling down the farm and concentrating on profitable crops and crops that grow quickly using small-scale infrastructure.”

With that method, a person can start a farm on $5,000 and turn it into a growing business every year.

It’s a method that would look different in each area it’s applied.

For Stone, the restaurant industry is where he finds the most steady source of income, but in other cities there are other methods.

“It’s not saying there’s a specific blueprint, it’s showing examples of direct consumer revenues because that’s where the farmers get the most returns,” he said.

The book, which took Stone 18 months to write, was published by New Society Publishers and will launch at an event at the Black Box theatre, behind Kelowna’s Community Theatre, on Nov. 6. It is free and features several speakers, starting at 7 p.m.

Forum to discuss how drivers and cyclists can share the road In the wake of two recent cycling fatalities, Urban Systems and the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition will host a community event Oct. 15 in Kelowna called The End of Bikes Vs. Cars.

The gathering has been motivated by polarizing commentary on social media in the aftermath of the cycling fatalities.

One of the cyclists who passed away was Patricia Keenan, an office manager at Urban Systems.

Martin Bell says the online commentary reflects a divide on the issue of how to safely share the road between motorists and cyclists.

“We’ve seen a lot of finger pointing. What we’d like to facilitate is a discussion about how we, as a community, want to share public roads, ensure safety and treat one another,” Bell said.

“It’s not about whether cars or bikes are the problem, it’s about people and how we want to treat one another.”

Bell will be a keynote speaker at the forum along with Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran and Chris Bruntlett, with Modacity in Vancouver.

Tickets are by donation, the full proceeds of which will go to a scholarship fund for Patricia Keenan’s 10-year-old son.

Empty gesture The irony, as they say, is delicious. Last week, the BC Liberals introduced to the legislature Bill 34, which aims to proclaim the first Wednesday in March as “Red Tape Reduction Day.” The goal, one assumes, is a relatively simple one—to eliminate excess paper work, delays and other unnecessary road blocks that only serve to hold up the otherwise good and important work done by the provincial government.

Of course, we are left to make that assumption on our own, as the actual wording of the proclamation itself—just a few short expository paragraphs—provides little in the way of useful information.

What is the end goal of such a day? What exact measures will be taken to achieve said goals? Who, exactly, will benefit? And how?

In the spirit of the bill itself, at least it’s succinct.

However, a few more words would go a long way toward explaining what, exactly, the point of it is, because on the surface it seems to be nothing more than parody—an unnecessary procedure that passes a law celebrating the reduction of unnecessary procedures.

Red-tape reduction was addressed by Premier Christy Clark during a throne speech earlier this year. It was made a priority at that time, and responsibilities dumped on the lap of new minister of small business, Coralee Oakes.

And now here they are, talking about it again without substance. Seems redundant, no?

Critics were quick to jump on the absurdity of it all, making comparisons to everything from Monty Python to The Simpsons, while wondering if it was a story culled from The Onion, the satirical online newspaper.

Had such a bill been passed on a larger stage, by a bigger government, it would likely be the lead item on any number of late-night television monologues.

But potshots aside, the bill itself seems meaningless – nothing more than an empty gesture aimed to make the government appear pro-active and forward thinking, while accomplishing nothing. You know, the usual red tape.

Liberal/NDP battle; PC steady as she goes Finally, the finish line is in sight.

City With just under Confidential two weeks to go in the federal election ALISTAIR campaign, all the WATERS parties—and their candidates—are turning up the heat on each other, given the closeness of the race amongst the three major parties at the national level, according to the pollsters.

For the first time in Canadian politics, three parties are running neck and neck as election day nears, with the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP all vying for enough votes in enough ridings to win a majority of seats in parliament and form the next government.

Locally, in a riding that has historically been a Conservative stronghold, both the Liberal and NDP candidates are running strong campaigns in an attempt to unseat the long-time incumbent Tory.

And while up to now the attacks from Liberal Stephen Fuhr and the NDP’s Norah Bowman have been squarely aimed at Conservative leader Stephen Harper rather than his party’s local candidate Ron Cannan, that is beginning to change.

But Cannan is still not the target that Fuhr and Bowman are publicly talking about. They are now going after each other, accusing each other’s party of not being able to defeat the Tories.

So, for Cannan, who has easily fended off election challengers in the past during his nine years as KelownaLake Country MP, the strategy appears to be ‘stick to the script, don’t attack your opponents, extenuate the positive and let the other two slog it out.’

That was clear Monday night when Fuhr attacked

Passing the microphone to Cannan, the latter ignored comments from the other two, their claims the Conservatives have seen 400,000 jobs wither away in Canada under their watch and their repeated claim the Tories have muzzled scientists and lowered Canada’s image in the rest of the world.

Cannan talked about what has been done locally, the federal money that has, at times, poured into the riding, and his desire to keep it coming.

When he, in turn, passed the microphone to Bowman, she responded to Fuhr’s attack, leaving Cannan unscathed.

Earlier in the day, the Conservative candidate skipped a radio debate with Fuhr and Bowman in favour of talking to kids at a local private school.

Cannan, now a political veteran, knows his audience and he knows his riding. And while it has changed in terms of demographics a bit over the last four years, he is still quick to point out that there are plenty of seniors here. Typically, people get more conservative in their views as they get older. Seniors also tend to vote in larger numbers. So Cannan sees them as his people.

The local Conservative strategy seems to be ‘keep your head down and don’t engage, that way you can’t screw up the good thing you’ve had going all these years.’

It’s not impossible for a Liberal or NDPer to knock off a Conservative here, but it will be hard, very hard.

Fuhr and Bowman know that, so they may want to change their aim as they head down the home stretch in this election.

Fought for the right to vote–or not vote To the editor: As a young man I put my life on the line in the Canadian military for many reasons, not the least of which was the expectations of truth and justice from the government.

I have earned the right to vote; but also the right not to vote, if no one can be found who I believe is worthy to have power over me.

This is also part of democracy.

Some say: Then vote for the lesser of the evils. But vote to exercise your right.

I say: Putting someone into power who is evil or unworthy merely to exercise a right is an irresponsible act and an affront to every vet who risked and gave their lives for freedom from tyranny and oppression.

Oppression comes in many forms, not just the obvious.

One should be aware that casting a ballot not only supports the candidate but,

moreover, supports the system. Most people in Canada don’t realize that the first act of the elected put into power in Canada by Canadians is to swear an oath of allegiance to a foreign power (England) before they can receive their seat of power in Canada. This act is no less than betrayal with no moral accountability to the electorate.

This was proved in a famous court case in Alberta in 1996—it’s not fiction. As well, this puts into question Canada’s alleged sovereignty.

It’s been argued that Canada’s head of state is Queen Elizabeth II via the Constitution Act 1982 of Canada. I’ll point out that the so-called Constitution Act 1982 is a ridiculous fraud forced on Canadians without their consent. It has no lawful validity and therefore is not a Constitution at all. Its contents have no lawful force and affect,

especially that of head of state.

As well, the Crown of England and her agents in Canada lost their lawful powers over Canada on December 11, 1931 and that condition can’t be lawfully changed by an act of government (Parliament).

At some point Canadians must shed all impediments of foreign power and become truly free, independent and a sovereign nation certified by a lawful Canadian Constitution and flag created by the people and for the people, not by government.

Until this happens I believe it is my patriotic duty not to support or sanction this present vexatious, chaotic system by voting, regardless of the candidates.

Now, really, when people, particularly the young, though they don’t even know how things are really suppose to be conducted, understand and know that something is amiss and wrong, can you actually blame them for having no trust, faith or belief in the system? The Canadian Constitution, if adhered to, is really a marvellous document; however, in their craving for power and control those in positions of authority, claiming they know better twist things to suit their own individual needs and desires.

Just to let you know, I am probably one of the very few Canadians who has ever actually bothered to read any portion of our Constitution—have you? The section on taxation was my particular area of interest and yah, it is a pretty boring read.

Big dogs at Central Green Open letter to Kelowna mayor, council: I have reviewed the new proposed development for Central Green and I’m a bit confused.

Every day we take our beautiful five-yearold, energetic black lab/Great Dane to the Richter St./Rowcliffe big dog park which is now part of Central Green. Here there is room for more than 10 big dogs to run, jump, chase a ball or Frisbee…It’s a great dog park.

On the new plan, the existing big dog park appears to be the same area where the new park is being proposed. I have looked at the design for the new park and can’t figure out where the fenced big dog park will be located within that park.

Along with many big dog owners who use

the park on a daily basis I would like to see the big dog park boundaries marked on the new park plan.

As you know, there is no other big dog park in the central part of the city. The strip of land adjacent to the road up Knox Mountain isn’t sufficient for a big dog to run and chase a Frisbee or ball. The swampy dog park at H2O also doesn’t have enough room for big dogs to run and catch their balls or Frisbees; especially when there are five more other dogs there.

So, please show us, the dog owning taxpayers, on the map of the new Central Green plan, where the space for a big dog park area will be located.

To the editor: Bravo to the open letter to our MP and MLA of Kelowna. (Why Is the Price of Kelowna Gas Among the Highest in the Country?, Oct 2 Kelowna Capital News.) We in Kelowna are being gouged to the extreme when it comes to gasoline prices.

We recently returned from a road trip around central and southern B.C.—the gas prices in Merritt, Kamloops, Barriere, Clearwater, Abbotsford and Vancouver were all less than Kelowna. Prices ranged from $.98 to $1.09 and in Vancouver ($1.14), where they pay a $.13 transit tax, was less than here.

Also the refineries are making more profits than ever (especially from Kelowna drivers), with oil prices down and gas prices soaring.

The gas companies are acting irresponsibly and obviously are in need of government regulation at every level—it is long past time our government should start standing up for the people they represent and end this crime.

I believe our so called leaders and representatives need to hear from more of us.

To the editor: It’s a perennial complaint and on-going dilemma: Why is voter turnout so low and continues to fall?

It’s really not rocket science though you might think so by the matter in which all the politicians, bureaucrats, intelligencia and the usual know-it-alls continuously scratch their heads over the issue. The fact of the matter is the system is broken and it has been broken since Pierre Elliot Trudeau altered the Constitutionally described manner in which bills would be voted on in the house in order to give more power to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

As per the Canadian Constitution, when a bill is presented for a vote, all MPs are allowed to vote on the bill according to their conscience. If it is a governing party presented bill and is defeated, then a vote of confidence or non-confidence is held.

If the MPs of the governing party want to keep their job they vote ‘confidence’ in the governing party.

However, sometime during his eight-year reign, between 1976 and 1984, our darling Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, in a manner that is all too common in our present governing practises—behind closed doors in a secret meeting—made a slight adjustment and alteration to the manner in which bills would be voted on; that being the vote for the bill also became the vote of confidence or

With a season of North American life and major junior hockey under his belt, Tomas Soustal was determined to push his game to a new level in his second tour with the Kelowna Rockets.

So far, so good for the Czech-born forward who has been one of the WHL team’s brightest lights early in the 2015-16 campaign.

Soustal, 18, has been among the Rockets’ most reliable and dangerous forwards, with five goals and 10 points in his team’s first six games.

“He’s a player that seems very driven, he wants to be on the ice, he wants to score goals,” Rockets’ coach Brad Ralph said of Soustal. “He’s very motivated to have a great year and that speaks to the start he’s had.

“He’s a big kid with good hands, a good shot…he’s a power forward who’s been a big part of what we’ve been doing this season.”

Like so many Europeans, Soustal’s first season in Canada was a considerable learning experience, both culturally and on the ice.

A year older and wiser, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward is thriving on the

“For sure, I like my role more this year,” said Soustal, the Rockets’ CHL Import draft pick in 2014.

“I was kind of like a shutdown forward, a third line player last year…but this year I’m getting to play more, be on the power play, a chance to show my skill.

“I like it and hopefully can keep it going and score more points.”

Rockets president and GM Bruce Hamilton has watched Soustal grow both on and off the ice over the last year and is encouraged by his progress.

“I think he’s been our most improved player,” said Hamilton. “I think his biggest challenge is getting his feet working

better, but he’s worked hard and is making good strides at that.

“We’re all pulling for him because he’s such a great kid, and the coach trusts him,” added Hamilton. “He’s come along nicely.”

Over the last several games, Soustal has been playing on a line with fellow European, Swissborn Calvin Thürkauf, who the Rockets chose in this June’s import draft.

Brad Ralph likes the symmetry developing between the two young forwards.

“There has been chemistry between them,” said Ralph.

“Thürkauf has been able to take his game to the next level and Tomas has been a big part of that.

“It’s nice to see both of them develop like they

have.”

A vital part of Soustal’s development last season was the Rockets’ lengthy run to the Memorial Cup and the nearly 100 games the team played in the process.

It’s a scenario Soustal would be all too happy to see repeated in 2016.

“It was a long season, but it was unreal, a great experience for me and all the boys,” Soustal said.

“We lost some pretty good players from last year, but we have a lot of good players still here and good new ones, too.

We think we can go for a long ride again.”

The 2015 edition of the Okanagan Sun is in some rather elite company.

Shane Beatty’s crew is just the fourth Sun team in history—and first in 11 years—to post a 10-0 BCFC regular season mark.

The Sun secured its record of perfection with a 51-38 victory over the Broncos Saturday in Kamloops.

“It’s a testament to the hard work the guys put in during the off-season and all season long,” Sun defensive lineman Jonas Gering said of his team’s record. “We came together as a family and worked hard towards the same goal. It’s a great accomplishment for our team.”

While the Sun will take some time to savour their distinction, the next and most immediate goal will come into focus.

Okanagan, which now sits three wins away from a national championship, will host the Broncos on Oct. 18 in the BCFC semifinal.

“We’ve accomplished our first goal, but now that’s over and it’s time to move on,” he said.

“Each week is a new chapter and we have three more steps to take.

We’re focusing on the next game and nothing more.”

The winner of the BCFC semifinal will move onto the Cullen Cup final the weekend of Oct. 24 and 25 against the winner of the other semifinal between the VI Raiders and Langley Rams.

The UBC Okanagan Heat enjoyed its best weekend of the 2015 Canada West season, earning four points over two games in men’s soccer action.

On Friday, the Heat knocked off the previously unbeaten Fraser Valley Cascades 3-0 in Abbotsford.

Forward Luke Warkentin notched two goals in the first half and midfielder Enzo Paal added one more after the break to secure the victory for UBC Okanagan, as the Heat posted its first clean sheet of the season.

On Saturday in Langley, despite being outshot 19-1, UBCO earned a 1-1 draw with the Trinity Western Spartans.

Trinity Western’s Elijah Adekugbe scored the Spartans lone goal late in the second half to salvage

the tie after the Heat’s second-year forward, Cole Kingzett had opened the scoring earlier in the half with UBCO’s only shot of the game.

Tait Cuthill, making his eighth straight start in net for UBC Okanagan was busy all night, turning away four of the five shots on goal by the Spartans. With the fourpoint weekend, the Heat remains in fifth place in the conference at 2-4-2.

The Heat returns to action next weekend,as they play a home-andhome series with interior rival Thompson Rivers.

Friday night’s game will be at Nonis Field in Kelowna, with Saturday’s going in Kamloops.

The WolfPack (sixth in the conference) will both be making a final push for the playoffs in the heated rivalry.

Heat women post 6-0 preseason mark The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball squad looks to be in fine form heading into the 2015-16 Canada West season.

The Heat, who have made a pair of Final Four appearances in each of the last two years, posted a perfect 6-0 record in the preseason.

Steve Manuel’s team closed out its exhibition schedule at home on the weekend, taking backto-back matches from the University of Alberta Pandas, the runners-up at nationals in 2015.

On Friday night at the Kelowna campus, UBCO needed four sets to dispose of the Pandas, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23, and 25-18.

Fourth-year outside hitter Megan Festival dominated proceedings with 22 kills in 51 attempts for the Heat, while teammate Brianna

Beamish led the defense with 15 digs.

On Saturday, UBCO needed all five sets before prevailing 17-25, 2521, 25-13, 21-25, and 15-13, with Kaitlynn Given making the kill for the final point. Beamish and Given set the pace with 14 kills apiece, while fifth-year setter Chandler Proch finished the night with a total of 44 assists and a service ace.

Manuel put a mixture of veteran players and underclassman on the court for the majority of Saturday’s match. Erin Drew, getting a start in the preseason, was a valuable presence at the net as she led the Heat with five blocks.

The Heat will serve up the new Canada West season Friday, Oct. 16 when they host the Regina Cougars in a 6 p.m. start at UBCO.

Two games into the B.C. high school football season, the KSS Owls have served notice they intend to be a force in B.C. high school football’s Eastern Conference.

Thanks to Friday’s convincing win over the rival Mt. Boucherie Bears, the Owls (2-0) are tied for top spot with perennial powerhouse, the St. Thomas More Knights.

The Owls will look to make it three straight on Saturday afternoon when they host Abbotsford’s WJ Mouat Hawks. Kick off at the CNC turf field is 2 p.m.

On Friday night at 6:30 at the Apple Bowl, Boucherie will take on STMC. Prior to that at 4 p.m., the Rutland Voodoos kick off their regular season against the West Vancouver Highlanders.

Fourth-year guard Mitch Goodwin led the way for UBCO, scoring 11 of his 31 points in the first quarter.

Randall Mosca, in his first game with UBC Okanagan, provided the Heat with 19 points and four rebounds.

On Saturday, Lethbridge got even with a convincing 89-55 win over the Heat.

UBCO had just two players finish in double figures, with Aldrich Berrios scoring 15 points and adding two assists, while Goodwin had 11 points.

The Heat will take on theNorthern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks on Friday, 8 p.m., at Immaculata Regional High School.

The UBCO women tipped off their first season under new coach Claire Meadows with a pair of close exhibition losses on the road.

On Friday at War Memorial Gymnasium in Vancouver, the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Heat 57-45.

Jordan Korol got the start as a freshman and made the most of the opportunity, she led the team with 11 points and had six rebounds.

Fourth-year guard Jessica Jazdarehee was the only other member of UBC Okanagan in double digits, finishing with 10 points.

On Saturday in Langley, the Heat fell 72-67 to the Trinity Western Spartans.

UBC Okanagan trailed 62-53 in the fourth quarter when the visiting Kelowna squad went on a 11-2 run and drew even at 64 in just a twominute span. The Heat were unable to continue that run as the Spartans countered with six straight points and never again trailed.

A special community engagement game is up next for UBC Okanagan in its preseason schedule.

The Heat will host the NAIT Ooks at Immaculata Regional High this Friday night at 6 p.m.

Following this weekend’s game UBC Okanagan will play a three-game series in Ontario.

A planned new shopping development slated for the corner of Glenmore Road and Summit Drive in Kelowna has received an enthusiastic thumbs up from city council.

The 22,000-square-foot development, to consist of five one-storey buildings and parking along an internal road, with several pedestrian access points and an “inviting” main entrance/plaza on the busy corner, will be built on land adjacent to the Conservatory residential building.

Coun. Luke Stack said while the original plans for the corner did not include such a prominent commercial space, he welcomed the change, describing the plaza as “lovely” and calling the entire development a “complement to the Glenmore Valley.”

His comments were echoed by Coun.

Charlie Hodge, who noted the long history of inactivity on the Conservatory site prior to the residential building finally being built a few years ago.

They are an amazing team—one-time marathoners dealing with having ICD’s (implantable cardioverter defibrillators) and both still choose to walk long distances.

They are Jim Lawrence, 77, who suffered a cardiac arrest nine years ago during the Friendship Run at the BMO Okanagan Marathon; and Corrine Gable, a 51-year old nurse whose life changed two years ago when she was found to have ARVC (arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy), leaving her unable to run or take part in intense endurance exercise.

Together they will walk/ jog the 10 km circuit at this weekend’s BMO Okanagan Marathon and in doing so will inspire others to keep going.

Jim started running at the age of 59 and it’s been a big part of his life. “It’s hard not to be able to run anymore, you go through a grieving process, but my motto is: It’s great to be alive.

“After my near death experience I value life everyday. I’m privileged to be able to walk, and I’m still fast.”

Both Jim and Corrine had been enthusiastic runners, doing iconic runs like the Boston Marathon before their health setbacks, and both still walk half marathons.

Corrine says it’s hard when the thing you are passionate about gets pulled out from underneath you. “It is still a struggle at times, but I try and look at my cup half full and not half empty. My husband is my rock of support, pulling me up on tough days.

Heart patients to pace marathon walk/run

Jim Lawrence and Corrine Gable will pace run/ walkers through the 10 km portion of the BMO Okanagan Marathon this Sunday in Kelowna. she adds, “we share our feelings and thoughts and provide each other with incentive to keep moving on. He’s a pretty amazing guy, who has a love for life.”

Both Jim and Corrine will be pace bunnies in the 10 km this weekend, helping others finish the race with, as Jim points out, “no specific time but just to finish.”

The BMO Okanagan Marathon gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Running Room Friendship Run takes place at 9 a.m.

The 5 km event starts at 10 a.m., and at noon children and families can participate in the BMO ABC Kids Activities followed by a 1 km Fun Run. The DDT Drumline Group, which performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, will warm up the crowds.

On Sunday, the BMO Okanagan Marathon’s main event, the 42.2 km Marathon Run/Walk, takes place at 7:40 a.m., followed by the 21.1 km

Half Marathon Run/ Walk at 8:10 a.m.

The 24th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure held at City Park in Kelowna on Sunday featured 970 participants who together raised $150,704.

Run for the Cure is a fundraiser for breast cancer research, and support for those battling the disease.

Last year, the event saw 1,350 participants raise $213,137.

“Breast cancer affects so many people, there are so many people who either have overcome breast cancer themselves or know

somebody who has been affected by it,” Run For the Cure director of fundraising Louise Richardson said, describing why so many people take part in the event.

“It’s a cancer that, although it’s typically in women, it does affect men as well.

Cancer fundraiser tops $150,000

“I don’t think there’s anybody in the community who doesn’t know somebody who’s had to deal with breast cancer.”

The walk/run kicks off by having the parade of survivors every year.

“We all get very emotional, we’re handing them carnations and there isn’t a dry eye up there,” she said.

“There’s not a dry eye in the line-up, everyone knows somebody up there, some of us know three or four people in the survivor lineup. And every year the survivor lineup gets bigger, because people are surviving and that’s good.

“As long as people keep surviving, we’ll keep giving them carnations.”

Healthy body weight study launched The Interprofessional Clinic at UBC Okanagan, a place where faculty experts from social work and psychology combine their expertise, will launch a healthy weight service and is looking for participants.

The healthy weight service includes individual and/or group assessment and treatment for a number of health and weightrelated issues including weight loss, obesity and diabetes, binge-eating and emotional eating disorders, weight gain prevention, nutrition, and physical activity changes.

The program will be led by

clinical faculty, who are registered psychologists.”

The Healthy Weight Specialty Service includes a 10-week cognitive-behavioural group therapy program for weight loss which will be co-facilitated by two clinicians. Group sessions will take place Monday or Thursday evenings from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m.

Senior encouraged to find strength to walk again

West Kelowna’s Pierre LaChance, a wood craftsman and artist, with one of his wood sculptures that are currently on display at the Okanagan Regional Library branch in Westbank. LaChance has a similar display at the Westbank museum as well. He started carving at a young age while recovering in the hospital after being hit by a car when riding his bike. Carving has become his lifelong passion, one that he enthusiastically is willing to share with local organizations to help draw attention to their cause or to assist in fundraising. His fascination with motor vehicles has led LaChance to create an array of wooden car, trucks and motorcycles. He has done a 1996 Molson Indy replica car and Evel Knievel’s XR750 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. One of his current projects is a two-meter long Spanish galleon replica.

Healthy Schools initiative helps students reach potential E Valerie Pitman Contributor

Any gardener will tell you that watching plants flourish through the summer is a rewarding experience and gives a great sense of accomplishment.

Healthy plants require a good foundation, strong roots, and regular

tending. Children are very similar. For them to flourish, they need healthy environments, strong connections to family, and adults in their lives who show they care.

Classrooms and school grounds, where students spend at least 25 hours a week, are a great environment for nourishing our children.

Along with learning the basics like reading and mathematics, schools provide lessons about respecting the differences in others, acting in a responsible and caring fashion, and they teach strategies to help children thrive in our everchanging world.

Schools that promote a sense of belonging see

both positive academic and health-related outcomes. The good news is presently the majority of B.C. students are happy to be at school and feel safe there.

According to the BC Adolescent Health Survey, students who reported feeling connected at school were more likely to describe their mental

Thanksgiving Next weekend is Thanksgiving weekend. Families and friends all over Canada will gather together for a feast. At many of those meals, someone will ask, “What are you thankful for today?” Many will recite a list of including family, friends, job and the other benefits we enjoy in Canada.” However, there are two other questions we must also ask: Who do you thank for all that you enjoy? How do you thank the source of your blessings?” Luke’s gospel reminds me what I am thankful for, who I am grateful to, and how I express my thanks.

“And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed.

Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:12-19) Our great nation was founded by immigrants. Many immigrated to escape persecution for their beliefs, most notably, their religious beliefs. Like many other people in Kelowna, I can claim that my parents were immigrants to Canada. Like thousands of other new Canadians, they were people of German descent who were born in the Ukraine. They lived under the repressive Stalinist regime. Like the lepers, they were outsiders who were rejected and

oppressed by their fellow citizens because of their ethnicity and faith. Many of them prayed to Jesus for deliverance. God used the winds of WW II to move hundreds of thousands of them to Germany. At the end of the war, when resources were scarce, many felt pushed to the edge of society and cried out to God once again for help and healing. Many experienced a call to immigrate to Canada.

They came to Canada full of hope. They learned English, worked incredibly hard, saved and sacrificed in order to achieve the Canadian dream of home ownership and economic success. They had found freedom from political tyranny and the unbearable hardship of war. Many experienced a profound sense of healing. The emotional scars and burdens they brought with them disappeared. Many simply continued on their way to health and wholeness in the new land.

My parents, like the tenth leper, in Luke’s gospel, turned back to praise, worship and thank Jesus.

Weekly worship was a priority for my parents.

I praise and thank God for answering the prayers of my parents and their peers with freedom, healing and material blessing. I thank and praise the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all the blessings bestowed upon me and my family. Even more importantly, I praise and thank God for Jesus and his amazing grace. Jesus cleansed the lepers, not because they deserved it or as payment of a bargain whereby, they promised to do something in return for their healing. Jesus, the all-knowing Son of God, healed them knowing that 90% would not return to thank him. Jesus’ action was a pure act of grace with no

expectation of receiving thanks. What made the 10th leper return? It was the God given realization that he had been touched by the hand and grace of God in Christ Jesus. He knew that there was no way to repay Jesus for what he had done.

All he could do was bow down and worship Jesus. The act of bowing down and worshiping, opened up a door to so much more: the promise of faith in and a relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the forgiveness of sin; a life with Jesus; and in the end, eternal life. Are you like that leper, do you need healing? Can you experience the hand of God in the blessings of your life? Exercise can Variety of programs help combat arthritis seniors to stay healthy

World Arthritis Awareness Day will take place Oct. 12.

While most people are aware of arthritis, many do not know of the disabling and

life-changing effects it has.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the oldest and most common forms of arthritis,a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage.

Cartilage is the part of the joint that cushions the ends of the bones and allows easy movement of joints.

The breakdown of cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint. It is most common in the weight-bearing joints of the hips, knees and lower back.

Statistics show: • more than 10 per cent of Canadian adults are affected by arthritis • joint damage caused by OA accounts for more than 80 per cent of hip replacement surgery and over 90 per cent of knee replacements • in Canada. 4.6 million, or one in six, Canadians report having arthritis • by 2031, approximately seven million Canadians (one in five) are expected to have arthritis • arthritis costs the Canadian economy more than $33 billion annually • more than six per cent of total hospitalizations in Canada are associated with arthritis.

Despite the frequency of the disease, its cause is still not completely known and there is no cure.

Many factors may play a role in whether you get OA, including age, obesity, injury or overuse and genetics.

If there were a perfect excuse not to exercise, arthritis pain would be it. After all, who feels motivated to exercise when they are in pain?

Pushing yourself to exercise when your body hurts isn’t easy, but research shows that exercise will not only improve your mood increase flexibility and range of motion but over time decrease the pain associated with arthritis.

Did you know you are ’feeding your joints when you exercise? Your cartilage (the gristle that protects the end of your bones) relies on movement to absorb nutrients and remove waste. What more reason to get moving? Be cautious though, as exercising with cold muscles can cause pain and possibly injury. If you have arthritis, you will need to do a longer warm up or you may want to consider a warm bath or apply heat packs to joints before exercising. It gets the synovial fluid flowing, which lubricates the joint.

Many doctors will recommend an exercise program in a warm pool for these reasons and also because of the low impact. Fibrofit is such a program held at Hawthorn Park and is available for those suffering with arthritis, fibromyalgia and other inflammatory diseases.

Seniors in the Okanagan can access fitness assessments, take yoga and AquaFit classes, have breathing problems addressed, or work on their heart or hip health— all at the Kelowna Y. For a lot of seniors, getting out and staying fit can be a challenge. And as seniors age, it becomes more and more important to get regular exercise in order to maintain mobility, muscle mass, and overall health.

That’s why the Kelowna Family YMCA offers a broad range of programs to help seniors stay in great shape.

“We’ve offered options for seniors pretty much since the day we opened our doors,” said Adriane Long, health promotion and active living director for the Kelowna YMCA. “Getting seniors active is very much about quality of life. Assisted membership applications are available at all YMCA locations, and assisted membership dues are calculated based on total household income and the number of people living in the house.

“There’s so much more to YMCA programs than is written out on paper.

The members who have been coming here for years and years feel like they’re part of a family,” Long said.

New laws for allowing liquor sales in grocery stores Katy Williams Contributor

The B.C. government’s 2013 Liquor Policy Review lead to a number of recommendations for change; perhaps the most talked about being the introduction of liquor sales in grocery stores.

Although this recommendation took the industry by a bit of surprise, it was the government’s response to public demand for more convenience.

Consumers expressed their desire to be more like the American model of one-stop shopping where you can pick up your bottle of wine in the same store as your bottle of ketchup.

However, the government has now passed the enabling legislation for these grocery store sales of liquor and things are, of course, not as straight-

forward as they originally seemed.

As with any new venture into liquor consumption, the policymakers have taken note that moderation and caution are key to avoiding a splitting headache.

The main reason you won’t see ‘wine and beer’ aisles popping up in every neighbourhood grocery is that the government is not issuing any new liquor licenses…and won’t be until 2022.

So, if a grocery store wants to start selling liquor, it needs to partner

up with an existing liquor-license holder and convince them that a location change is worth their while.

The government has made this more tenable by lifting the relocation restrictions it previously had on license holders that did not allow them to relocate more than five kilometres from their original business location.

For those lucky grocers who are able to score a liquor retail license from an existing holder, the new laws allow for two different models of liquor sales.

The first is a storewithin-a-store model where the liquor sales must be in a separate area with restricted access and separate tills.

This model allows for sale of a broad range of wine and liquor in accordance with the specific terms of the liquor license. Essentially,

The B.C. government has expressed its hope that this change, along with the other updates to the province’s liquor laws, will provide more convenience and choice for customers and drive the economy forward

Some people, in their quest to save time, try to drink their supply of water in a couple of marathon drinking binges.

This doesn’t work because the body will simply flush out what it doesn’t need at that time.

The only benefit here is the exercise you get walking to and from the washroom.

I still remember the words of an eminent exercise physiologist in school saying: “You should spend half your life drinking water and the other half urinating.”

I can’t imagine he had much of a social life.

Mission Group Homes Ltd. celebrated its 1,000th homeowner Monday by giving back to the community.

Company CEO Jonathan Friesen said Mission Group reached the milestone in the spring, and decided to mark that occasion with a $10,000 donation to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter.

“It’s about housing, housing is about families, communities and about buildings,” Friesen said in describing why his company made the donation

to the women’s shelter.

“The women’s shelter is all of the above, in an area that we consider to be meaningful and of need. So we consider it to be a pretty obvious connection.”

Kelowna Women’s Shelter executive director Karen Mason stated the shelter is incredibly blessed by the continuous generosity of their community, and the donation will help real people change their lives.

“This $10,000 is critical in allowing us to continue to offer the services and programs we offer to women

and children in this community,” she explained.

“A lot of our programs don’t receive any targeted funding, so when we get a donation like this it can be a real cash infusion to a program that otherwise isn’t being funded.”

Last year, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter housed more than 200 women and children, provided 15,500 meals and delivered more than 1,000 individual and group counseling sessions.

Gardening much better without the insecticides When I was growing up, my family’s greenhouse and garden centre operation offered a myriad of materials available for controlling insects and diseases.

Some of the products we used in the greenhouses were downright obnoxious when I look back at them.

For instance, I remember my dad and I using a product called Cyano-gas, a trade name for calcium cyanide.

The way we would apply it was to wet down the pathways with water, then walk backwards starting at the back end of the greenhouse,

The granules immediately reacted with the moisture sending up a poisonous gas that controlled many problematic insects, in particular white fly and spider mite.

At the time, we weren’t aware it was one of the most harmful products ever used

in the industry.

Just how stupid were we? I suppose we just didn’t know any better.

Fortunately, over a period of time these harsh chemicals used in the greenhouse and nursery trade were removed and replaced with less toxic materials.

A similar transformation has taken place in the in the home and garden industry.

About 30 years ago, we started to see many of the products we had been using in the garden for years being

removed from the market place.

At the time, I was concerned that having our tools removed would make it very difficult to deal with these problems. Insecticides had been used for decades to control insects in the home, farm and garden.

From the late 1800s to the 1960s, development of insecticides had focused on stronger, broad spectrum (non-selective) products with little attention paid to product safety or environmental impact.

Many safer environmental-

ly friendly products have been developed and when used in conjunction with some traditional materials, good cultural practices and predaceous insects, we called it Integrated Pest Management. There are many natural predators that are vulnerable to most insecticides. In the past, these predators were killed off by the recommended cover sprays, which were applied to the entire yard at scheduled dates on the calendar.

The target insects gradually became resistant to the insecticides and populations

get out of hand without the predators. It is amazing how I have changed my thinking on this subject over the years.

The methods we have been using to control garden pests are going the way of the spittoon and the ashtray.

One of the experiences that initiated this change happened years ago when I spotted a huge infestation of aphids on my peach tree.

I went straight to my garden shed for the diazinon and mixed up a sprayer full.

As I was about to pull the trigger, I spotted a ladybug in a cluster of aphids, so I took the time to remove it and place it in a safe place.

Then I decided to put the sprayer away and just clip off the branch tips loaded with the aphids and get rid of them that way and much to my surprise it worked.

While I didn’t get rid of all the aphids, still doing this brought the population down to a level that made it easy for the ladybugs, lace wings and hover flies to handle it.

The only spray I use in my yard now is the dormant oil lime sulphur combination in spring to control over-wintering insects and diseases.

For those who have only been in the housing market for a few years and have to take out a mortgage to purchase a first, second or third home, consider some of the modern realities today about mortgage interest rates.

With our years of mortgage lending experience, we have seen it all from interest rates of 21.75 per cent to when a five-year mortgage rate locked in at 12 per cent was seen as a good deal.

However, with today’s low interest rates, that wouldn’t be such a positive financial move today.

When rates were historically at their highest, the 20+ per cent range, many people were in dire straits and a lot of them lost their homes as their payments increased substantially and their monthly income wasn’t enough to make their mortgage and other personal debt payments.

Eventually, the federal government had to step in to subsidize those with high mortgage payments to make those rates affordable to more people.

In most instances, many homeowners were able to keep their mortgage payments current and be able to live in their homes. At the outset of the 1980s in Kelowna, home prices were low compared to today’s average price, but remember that mortgage amounts and wages also remain low today.

Five year fixed, closed mortgage rates are around 2.69% per cent (there are some lenders with lower rates for the same term) and closed variable rates are around the 2.10 per cent rate.

Seven and ten year mortgage rates are 3.69 and 4.29 per cent rates respectively.

When you look at the mortgage interest rate scenario in the 1980s, you can see the huge difference from then and now.

Yes, home prices are substantially higher than way back in the older days but interest rates are such that you can guarantee in interest rate for a fairly long period of time.

The one unknown remains how long our historically low interest rates will last, but low rates have now been a constant for a long period of time, bringing some stability to the real estate market.

We do not discourage variable rate mortgages but we do caution in what happens if there are increases in lender’s prime rates which will increase what your monthly mortgage costs will be and affect how your household budget may be affected.

He and his wife Lydia have traveled to a number of countries to view and photograph the flora of those areas.

He will be showing slides and speaking about the flowers of southwest Turkey, a country whose climate is not unlike ours and who have taken the planting of living walls to an art form.

LUTZ, JOHN ADAM Passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus at the age of 95 at Brookhaven Care Centre on Sept 29, 2015. John was predeceased by his loving wife Monica of 57 years and his eldest son, Patrick.

Survived by his daughters, Geri (Gary) Gleerup and Karen Lutz (Destry); sons, Dale (Sherrill), Rob (Wendy) and Barry (Lisa); 18 grandchildren; 6 great grandsons and many extended family and friends. John was Trades Foreman for the City of Kelowna for 27 years where he was respected and admired. He was a kind and gentle man, who was always willing to lend a hand. He touched the lives of many.

John had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to the staff in Sumac West at Brookhaven Care Centre for their attention and care to dad.

PACHOLUK, EMILY

A Social Justice Champion With the Canadian Federal Election just weeks away, Emily Pacholuk, a politically active woman is the choice resident to profile this month.

Emily grew up as a part of a large loving family in Manitoba. These were happy days for her, but her truest happiness and fulfillment came when she was fighting for the rights of people. Although she did not graduate as a teenager, she was hired by the B.C. Government to run the Ministry of Social Development in the Fraser Lake area of northern British Columbia. As an adult, while filling a social work role full time, she also studied to finish her grade 12 education, being the first adult to attend public school there, paving the way for others.

Meanwhile, in her “spare” time, Emily was busy planning events and lining up guest speakers as part of her campaign to draw awareness to the need for Women’s Rights to be granted, respected and guarded. This was her passion.

She was held in very high esteem by women throughout the province. Once, while at a social work conference in Vancouver, each attendee had to introduce him or herself.

When she said her name, a person on the other side of the room call out Emily Pacholuk ... “THE Emily Pacholuk”?

She then was called to the stage so everyone could see, applaud and honour her.

Another one of her accomplishments was being in charge of Crisis Line for the northern part of the province of B.C. sometimes more. With all of Emily’s involvement in bringing light to the injustices towards women and others in need, it was not surprising that she had strong political ties. Emily extended hospitality to Dave Barrett, the B.C. Premier in the 1970’s, whenever he travelled up north where she lived.

Also, in the 1970’s Emily was nominated as 1 of 20 Canadians to be flown to China in the time of tearing down the wall. These Canadians were chosen because of their dedication to social justice and freedom for all people, and were honoured there for 10 days.

Emily was an avid bridge player, enjoyed the Casino, she played a mean game of Texas Hold’em. Her fruit pies from wild berries (huckleberry, strawberry) and especially apple were “amazing.”

In her younger days Emily would be seen riding on the back of a motorcycle up the coast of California, she loved James Dean and at the time, wanted to have a peek at the Rebel.

Was Emily a Rebel? Hell yes ... she was a Rebel WITH a cause!! (Written by Jenny Reink) Emily passed away on September 30, 2015 at the age of 80. She is survived by her daughter Barbarah, sons Michael, Daniel; grandchildren Allison, David, Whitney, Matthew; great grandchild Lily, her sister Margaret Malowski and many beautiful relatives and friends Emily, you are an amazing strong, inspiring lady and we are honoured to have known you, We will miss you.

BROWN, RICHARD GLEN

January 31, 1938 ~ October 2, 2015 Glen passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC after a two year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and best friend Patricia (Ball) of 52 years; his three children, Ross of Vancouver, Sandra (Stan) Solski and Catherine (Kevin) McAvoy of Kelowna; four grandchildren, Amber, Kayle Johnston, Aaron Solski and Andrew McAvoy.

He also has his one adorable great granddaughter Shy-Anne Johnston. Besides his family in Kelowna, he is survived by his sister Diane Trovato of Vancouver and extended family in Ontario, Manitoba and B.C. Glen was predeceased by his parents Winnifred and Harry (Bud) in 1969. Glen was born in Kenora, Ontario and spent his early life there. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1951. Glen attended Laura Second School and Gordon Bell High School. After High School Glen went to work for MTS. He remained at MTS from 1957 until 1975 when he re-located to Kelowna, BC. He was employed by OK Tel and the BC Tel until he retired in 1996.

After retiring, Glen enjoyed travelling with Pat to various points in the U.S. and Canada. Many thanks to Dr. G. Chamberlain and the staff of KGH and Hospice House.
