Aquatic centre seeks grant for family events TRE VOR CR AWLEY

The RDEK is considering a grant to provide special events for the Cranbrook Aquatic Centre aimed at boosting family attendance from local and regional residents. The fee structure for the events at the Aquatic Centre and Western Financial Place were formerly under a two-tier system was abolished in March by Cranbrook city council. Staff with the aquatic

centre are now hoping to raise awareness about the new single-fee system by offering four free public swimming events through a $6490.40 grant. The proposal would be four free public swimming events, one free swim-in movie night, one two-day free aquatic fitness event, and one New Year’s event with organized games and activities.

Man on trial for firearm incident TOWNSMAN STAFF

A trial is getting underway in Cranbrook Supreme Court this week. A man is facing a charge of careless use or storage of a

firearm stemming from a police incident two years ago in Cranbrook. Jury selection began on Monday morning, before crown and defence counsels

presented arguments on the admissibility of evidence afterwards in front of Justice Trevor Armstrong. The man was charged in April, 2013, following a po-

lice incident in October, 2012 where a firearm was discharged near the outskirts of city limits. The trial will resume on Tuesday.

There will be a new offleash dog park in Cranbrook. The new park will be located on the former grounds of Muriel Baxter Elementary School off 2nd Street South and Victoria Avenue. Maryse Leroux, director of Corporate Services, said the City of Cranbrook and School District 5 have come to an agreement, which will allow the city to operate and maintain an off-leash dog use area at the location. Leroux said the details are still being finalized, but city staff has already started developing the implementation plan, which will include installing fencing, garbage containers, signage and gates. Coun. Norma Blissett asked when the dog park

will be completed. Leroux replied that Leisure Services expects the park to be finished early next year. Coun. Danielle Cardozo asked about the state of the water system the school district was originally planning to put in at the site. “When that discussion came up and we knew the school district was putting in a new water system, we kind of talked about how it might be money saving, because we were going to put in a water tap or two,” Cardozo asked. “Did that end up happening?” City staff said they weren’t sure what had happened to the request for information on the water system that went to the school board.
