The school has received $3,500 so far, which is half of the money raised for cancer research through the run. Bluffton School had set a goal of raising $5,000 this year.

Gull Lake couple warn public to be aware of phone calls from persons using false identity

A Gull Lake couple were almost, but not quite fooled by a phone call made by someone pretending to be their grandson who said they need money in a hurry to get out of jail.

Catherine Ford said she got a phone call last Thursday morning from someone impersonating her grandson. The person said he had been in a car accident and had been charged with drunk driving.

“The story was so believable,” she said. “He said he had been drinking at a venue with a buddy who was too drunk to drive. He said he had only had a couple of drinks so he figured he would be fine. But, as it turned out they were in an accident and he had been arrested for drunk driving.”

The person on the phone, pretending to be the Ford’s grandson, said his lawyer would be contacting them.

In an email to the Review, Kirk Ford said a person, pretending to be their grandson’s lawyer, Adam White, said he wanted an Interac card number.

“Since I was unable to give him a number he graciously invited me to use Western Union and make a money transfer of $995 to a Mr. Richard Thomas located in West Westmount, Quebec. I was asked to tell Western Union that it was a personal amount for Mr. Thomas and not a business transaction. Apparently this was very important.”

The attempt to dupe the couple out of the money was thwarted when the Fords, who had become suspicious of these demands, were able to contact their grandson by telephone at work.

“Jesse was at work,” said Catherine Ford. “He was fine.”

The couple warns the public to be wary of phone calls such as the one they received.

“Always phone the person,” said Ford. “If you cannot get a phone number to call back, be suspicious.”

On The Other Side

September is kind of a bossy, flamboyant month.

I’ve noticed that lately, as I try very hard to adhere to the timetable that seems to come along automatically with the new calendar page.

Okay, I admit it. I have been feeling just a tad sorry for myself.

I wasn’t quite ready for September because I hadn’t quite finished with summer.

Summer kind of got away on me because of the book. The book was called The Magic of Organization and it was supposed to change my life.

I bought it because I keep thinking if I read enough of those books something will click and a new organized me that has been hiding inside my body

But, as I purged and cleaned, summer with all its magic, charm and delightful green and blue sun drenched days, disappeared.

Wow! That was fast. Oh well, my efforts have paid off and my house is so neat and organized, I almost feel like someone else lives in it.

I dare not question myself as to how long it will last, but right now am enjoying the satisfaction of opening a closet and staring at neatly folded towel and sheets.

It’s a miracle, actually!

Anyway, now we are on to September. People are saying its time to get back to a routine.

Its time to get back to lessons and classes and getting all fit and self-improving whatever self improvement thing needs work.

Waiting in a line up at the grocery store, I grabbed one of those magazines

whose front cover flaunted something about being all fit and looking at least 20 years younger than your real age.

Once again common sense perched its little voice on my shoulder and said, “you can’t read about it and make it happen, you dummy.”

I guiltily dropped the magazine in my cart anyway, hiding the unhealthy choices like nachos and cookies and smiled sweetly at the check out girl.

But, whatever, I’m ready. I know all about verbs as opposed to nouns.

Action. Take action! It’s the only way to make things happen.

So, I’m back at the gym, working at working out, and being all glad when I’m done. And my wonderful, sweet and very patient piano teacher has agreed to take me on for yet anoth-

er year, coaching and encouraging me as I stumble through yet another book, hopefully one level higher.

And, for some reason, I’m all happy.

Every morning and every night when I drive to and from work September blesses me with a delightful kaleidoscope of colours that takes my breath away.

My little grandson just began Grade 1, leaving the cocoon of mom’s kitchen and chocolate chip cookies for a bigger world. He is somewhat tired, bewildered and missing his brothers, his Lego and his favorite TV shows.

I think about him as I drive through the glorious golden September days.

“It’s just the start of another adventure,” I muse to myself. “For you and for me!”

And it’s good. It’s all good!

Life’s moments watched by a team of people

Common sense tells me you can’t get organized from a book anymore than you can jump into the deep end of the pool just by reading about it, but me and common sense are usually at odds anyway.

So I bought the book, sighed deeply and began reading, waiting, in a most impractical way, for the magic to begin.

It didn’t.

About the same time as I bought the book, a friend who, for some reason, knows about such things told me if I just started with one shelf or one cupboard or one corner, I could have my whole entire house clean and organized.

“When?” I said all meek and compliant.

“One day,” my unhelpful friend said.

And so it began.

One shelf in my pantry.

And then another.

Before I knew it I became obsessed. Clean, clean, clean. Look at me go!

My self-imposed cleaning frenzy lasted throughout the summer. I have to say I went through every closet, every cupboard, every bathroom and even the laundry room for heaven sakes, did not escape my ruthless attack.

I’ve had a lot of excellent experiences this summer. I could likely write a fair amount on all my travels, laughs, and comedic hiccups that I endured throughout the warm days of the June, July, and August.

In and amongst all the motorcycle miles that were accumulated, I found time to venture on a midsummer camping mission.

There were six of us in a conjoined site, just west of Trochu, in the river valley at the Tolman Bridge (east) Campground. My friends shared an important collective realization during that weekend trip in July.

During the first night, once the sun had sufficiently set, our group was a little drunk and a little restless.

It was decided that we all should go check out the river. We stood on the eastern banks of the Red Deer River and looked up at the stars. Our attention was diverted to a car that came to

the boat launch on the west bank.

The couple who came out of the car were oblivious to our presence on the other side of the river — and remained oblivious to us even after we all hooted, howled, growled, and barked like mad dogs on the banks. When our cries went unnoticed, we stopped acting like wild animals.

The couple stood close to one another and seemed to be entranced with the night sky. Someone from my group quietly spoke, “it looks like they are having one of those life moments.”

Our group seemed to know that the couple were in a moment that would become (for them) a cher-

ished memory of an evening spent gazing into the sky. Our group has been a group since the dawn of time: the majority of us have been friends since elementary school. We all have had our share of life’s moments together — the ones that fall under the category of unforgettable instances in life.

Another person in our group spoke while we simply stood on the banks watching the people on the other side: “life moments, watched by a team of people.” It sounded like a slogan. Our group had a collective epiphany. We began to converse over the strange realization that some of our group’s scared moments

may have been silently observed from a distance, just like how we were all witnessing a couple have their own moment. Our group was jarred at the notion that the memories we mutually experienced may share ownership with outsiders.

We left the banks of the river and returned to the campsite. The rest of our evening was spent stringing together fragments of philosophical knowledge.

My group felt like we had been an sideshow audience to the couple on the other side of river — but for all we knew some group could have been watching us while we sat around the fire deliberating and contemplating.

Letter

Combine drivers deserve respect when on roads Dear Editor, Hello, combine driver!

Do you not see the line of traffic behind you? Do you not see the aggravated drivers pulling into the other lane to see if it's safe to pass? Do you not see them tailgating and honking at you because they are in a hurry to get somewhere?

Do you not see that they pass you in frustration even when there is on coming traffic, which puts everyone in danger?

You must have more patience then me, because if I were you, I would have swerved into the vehicles passing me and maybe knock some sense into their empty heads! Actually I know for a fact you have more patience than me because I can barely drive three hours on the highway without almost losing my mind, let alone drive in circles for 12 plus hours.

Do they not realize that you are on the highway to get to work? That you have a tighter deadline then they do? They could have left 15 minutes early today, while you, combine driver, probably didn't get home until 1a.m. and you were probably up by 5 a.m. to get your next field finished. So thank you combine driver, for having the

most patience in the world.

For putting food into the hands of people who can't even give you the time of day to wave as they pass you in a safe manner.

For feeding those who couldn't even follow calmly and safely behind you for an extra three minutes as you pulled into your next field. Thank you for risking the life of your little one who sits in the seat beside you as they learn how to become the next generation farmer. I saw your signal light was on as you wanted to turn left into your field, I saw that you safely looked in your mirror before turning to see that there was a semi who was in too much of a hurry to notice your signal light was on.

If you hadn't looked to see if someone was passing you before you turned, that semi would have hit you. It would have hit your little one first. It's harvest season, people.

For only a few more weeks there's going to be farmers driving their equipment on the roads to get to work. Give them the respect they deserve, and a little extra space on the roads so everyone can get to where they are going safely.

Letter

History of old Scout Hall dates back to early ‘20s Dear Editor, Re: Helping Hands Building Reading in the Rimbey Review I noticed that the building, which the Helping Hands were using, has also been referred to as the Old Scout Hall.

There was also reference to not having any historical funds to preserve this old building.

However, would it not be better to spend two dollars of taxpayers’ money to retain a community asset rather than one dollar of taxpayers’ money to dispose of that asset?

The history of this building dates back to before 1924. In 1924 there is a record of this building being used as an intermediate schoolroom in Rimbey.

In 1924 the Rimbey School Board of Trustees having raised by means of debentures the sum of $20,000 started the building of a much-needed new school making this building available for other uses.

Kitchener Lodge #95 which is the Masonic Lodge located in Rimbey, inquired of the School Trustees the opportunity to purchase this building for a Rimbey Masonic Lodge.

The Masonic Lodge in Rimbey purchased this building for the $350.00.

Brother Francis Robert Symonds gifted to the Lodge Lot 5 Block A, Plan 1962C.J which is located at the south west corner of the Lions Park where the skate park is now being built.

Several of the contractors from Edmonton who were in Rimbey building the new School were Masons and agreed to assist the local Masons in building a foundation of first class brick and tile upon which to place this new lodge hall.

The old school building, now a new Masonic Lodge Hall was successfully moved to this lot November 29, 1924.

The building was made ready and the first Masonic meeting in this new lodge was April 06, 1925. This was to be the Rimbey Masonic Lodge Hall until December 10, 1963 when the Masons moved into the Legion Hall.

During the time that

the Masons retained this building and a Chapter of the Eastern Star used it and the Anglican Church used it as a Sunday School for the children.

On October 13, 1964 the building was leased to the Union College. On June 14, 1966 the building was sold to The Boy Scouts for $300.00 to be moved and the lot cleaned up.

The building was subsequently moved to the northwest corner of the same property, a basement put under it, and it has become the old Scout hall and most recently, the building that housed Helping Hands.

In short, records show the building was built prior to 1924 and went from an intermediate schoolroom to Masonic Lodge Hall to a Scout Hall and to a Helping Hands facility. At all times it served Rimbey residents within the Rimbey village and town.

Former Premier Ralph Klein once spoke of an Alberta so fundamentally strong, with such a prosperous economy, that it often appeared government was on autopilot.

These words were often used to ridicule the four-term premier, citing a perceived lack of vision for Alberta. I believe history will give Premier Klein the benefit of the doubt. His government eliminated a $3.2 billion deficit and paid down $23 billion in debt, making Alberta the most prosperous jurisdiction in North America.

but it is not meant to replace a pilot altogether; certainly not when there are storm clouds on the horizon.

If the Alberta Government’s 1st Quarter Fiscal Update is any indication, a full-blown hurricane has arrived.

According to the update, the government’s consolidated deficit is poised to reach $9.1 billion. The NDP is increasing total spending to a record $50.2 billion, and increasing our province’s debt by 50 per cent to $18.3 billion.

With this crisis reaching a boiling point, one would expect the government to be taking clear steps to address the situation.

Unfortunately, all indications are this government remains on autopilot. A firm date for the introduction of the provincial budget has not been set. Rather, members of the government have opted to take the summer off, allowing them to campaign with their federal NDP counterparts.

For instance, Jobs Minister Lori Sigurdson was in BC campaigning for Tom Mulcair at a time when mass layoffs have spiked Alberta’s unemployment.

It’s not just this gov-

ernment’s disregard for the economy that is worrisome.

While the NDP siesta continues, important day-to-day business is being ignored.

In August, the government nearly blew off a delegation of leading U.S. policy makers, who travelled to Alberta to tour oilsands operations near Fort McMurray. Only after the Official Opposition offered to host the delegation did the government send Environment Minister Shannon Phillips.

Meanwhile, the government is ignoring basic transparency rules. Under a Treasury Board directive issue last fall, the government must disclose details regarding certain sole-source contracts on a quarterly basis.

The NDP has yet to comply with this directive, which is particularly concerning to me in my role as Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Democracy and Accountability.

When it comes to addressing the economic crisis, as well as the day-to-day business of government, our Official Opposition stands ready to help.

It’s time to get to work for all Albertans.

Step one: Turn off the autopilot.

He noted the forecast for jobs is good, noting that a re-elected Conservative government will aim to create 1.3 million new jobs by 2020.

He said a balanced budget, low taxes across the board and a single seniors tax credit to be introduced by the Conservatives clearly show the Party has a handle on the country’s financial picture.

“The numbers should speak for themselves,” he said. “We are the envy of our peer countries.”

Calkins noted the situation in the Middle East is cause for concern not only among his constituents, but for all Canadians.

“It is a sensitive issue,” he said.

Keeping Canadians safe from the threat of terrorism and protecting vulnerable minorities overseas are a priority of the Harper government, he said.

Ongoing efforts of the Party include creating banned travel zones in terrorist-controlled parts of the world to stop foreign fighters who return to Canada after launching terrorist attacks. Assisting victims of ISIS in Iraq and Syria by providing humanitarian aid and refugee assistance is also part of the government’s plan, he said.

In keeping with police and peace officers national memorial day the town of Rimbey flew its flags at half mast on Sept. 27.

On the last Sunday in September, police and peace officers national memorial day, flags on the Legislature Building, McDougla Centre and all Provincial court houses and correctional institutions are lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset in honour of fallen Canadian police and peace officers.

Acting CAO Donna Tona said Sept. 27 is a day which has been set aside provincially to honor peace officers and RCMP in such a way.

“It is out of respect for our relationships with the RCMP and our peace officers,” she said. “It is the right thing to do and it is important we honour them in such a way.”

Peace officers in Rimbey are Sgt. Kyle Koller and resident community peace officer Jay Klause.

New teachers on board at Rimbey Christian School

Rimbey Christian School has two new faces on staff this year.

Leesha Tiemstra is the homeroom teacher for grades eight and nine.

Tiemstra, who graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Social Science and a Bachelor of Education taught for six months in Lethbridge previously.

The new teacher graduated from Central Alberta Christian High School in Lacombe and is presently commuting from Lacombe to Rimbey.

She is pleased to be teaching at the Christian School.

“I am enjoying teaching junior high,”

she said.

Also new to the staff this year is Fiona Doige who is teaching the Kindergarten and Grade 1 class.

Prior to becoming a teacher Doige worked with children with special needs.

“My work with these children affirmed that I should pursue teaching as a career,” she said.

Doige enjoys spending time outdoors.

She also loves to read, play the piano and paint and would like to illustrate children’s’ storybooks in the future. She also wants to continue to learn American Sign Language.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the people of Rimbey,” she said.

Request denied by council

Rimbey town council has turned down a local musician/songwriter’s request for funding to pay for costs associated with recording a song for the Innocence Lost Foundation.

Debbie Bergeron wrote the song When Innocence is Lost and has been asked to debut the piece at an event entitled Trading a Gun for a Guitar in Vancouver on Oct. 10.

The cost of recording and flight ticket prices is $1,276.

Council agreed to encourage Bergeron to go through an online organization such as GoFundMe to raise funds.

They also agreed to invite the musician to showcase her talents at a town-sponsored event such as the Christmas party.

Mayor Pankiw noted that financially supporting the singer would be setting precedence for other similar funding requests.

In a letter to council, Bergeron said the Innocence Lost Foundation is building a community centre in Kabala, Sierra Leone, West Africa. One of the founders of the foundation was a child soldier during the country’s civil war and knows the healing needed from such an experience.

“I am realizing that the world is not so big,” said Bergeron. “I never imagined that I’d meet a former child soldier and learn the devastation that such a cruel childhood would bring

Evacuation Procedures: In the unlikely event of a release from the pipeline, it may be necessary to evacuate you to ensure your safety. Hart ready to defend NDP banner

The economy and jobs are on the minds of Albertans as the federal election looms closer, says NDP candidate Doug Hart.

Hart said it is unfortunate that 70 per cent of Alberta’s exports are from the oil and gas industry.

“Alberta is hitching its economic wagon to a single source economy,” he said.

“Agriculture has been forgotten about.”

Hart said other countries have no confidence in Canada’s economy thanks to the Conservative government which has experienced one scandal after another.

“Our dollar has dropped to 75 cents, the biggest single drop ever,” he said.

Hart suggests diplomatic solutions to dealing with issues in the Middle East as opposed to using guns and missiles.

Hart said Albertans are

still recovering from the provincial election and not enthused about the federal race.

“It’s slow, but it has picked up momentum.”

Hart has an extensive background in professional and civic activities. He has represented the Civil Service Association of Alberta, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, the United Nurses of Alberta, the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta, and Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes.

He has also served on many provincial and federal governance boards including The Yellowhead Regional Educational Consortium, The Alberta Council on Admissions and Transfers, Alberta North, Red Deer College, and Grande Prairie Regional College.

Hart was a recipient of the Premier’s Centennial Medal of Excellence in 2005.

26 days --- but whose counting?

This is what Liberal candidate Jeff Rock said last Wednesday in a telephone interview from his Red Deer office.

Rock, who is on leave from his job as minister of a church in the city, said he is having a lot of fun.

“It’s going really well,” he said. “The response has been great.”

Overall, the first time Liberal candidate said people are worried about their jobs and want to see a new direction in government.

“They are pretty worried about the economy,” he said.

“I know it’s a long shot to be a Liberal candidate in Alberta, but I am cautiously optimistic.”

Rock has served as the board chair of the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society and has been a member of the City of Red Deer's Downtown Redevelopment Plan Committee. He is the founding chair of the Red Deer Interfaith Network.

Rock holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s of Divinity from McGill University in Montreal. He is an Ordained Minister in The United Church of Canada.

Rock will be in Rimbey on Oct. 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Empress Theatre Emporium for coffee and conversation. He will be at the Cross Eyed Giraffe Cafe in Bentley from 3 to 4 p.m.

Douglas Alan McLeod passed away September 19, 2015 at the age of 86 years. He was predeceased by his wife Yvonne McLeod (September 6, 2014), parents Prudence and Edward McLeod, and brothers Donald and Maurice McLeod.

Doug is survived by his sister Beverly Fleury, his children Paula Madu, Debbie Clutton (Dennis), Doug McLeod, and Barbara McLeod (Stephen); grandchildren Alyson Shore (Collin), Sydney Madu, Tori Madu, Rebecca McLeod, Clare McLeod Smith, Malcolm Knutsen, Ronan Clutton, Ben Clutton, great grandchildren Hannah and Hailey Shore, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doug was born in Calgary February 16, 1929 and spent his early years on the family farm south of Okotoks, and a farm west of Rimbey for a short period of time as well.

He began riding steers as a boy and continued on to ride broncs and bulls. Doug has a passion for riding and was a lifelong horseman, a skill he passed along to all of his children.

Doug served in the navy out of Victoria, B.C. in the early 1950’s. During that time he married Yvonne Fleury and in 1960 they ventured from Calgary to their home in the Crestomere area. He worked as a stationery engineer, farmed, and operated gas wells until his retirement in 1989. In 2014 he moved to the Parkland Manor in Rimbey.

Doug was an active member of the Ponoka Fish & Game Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. In honor of his memory donations to the Ponoka Fish & Game Association and the Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre will be gratefully accepted.

The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Christine Ellis, the nurses and staff at the Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre, the staff at Parkland Manor, and Wayne Clark of Wilson’s Funeral Chapel for his professional guidance.

A Memorial Gathering of Doug’s friends and family was held from the Rimbey Royal Canadian Legion on Friday September 25, 2015 at 1:00 pm.

RESTA July 26, 1934 - September 20, 2015 Silvio James Angelo Resta of Red Deer, Alberta, formerly of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Villa Marie Covenant Care Centre, Red Deer on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the age of 81 years. He was predeceased by the love of his life of 56 years, Rilda Resta (nee Dewalt) on September 27, 2014.

Silvio was born and raised in Rimbey where he attended the Fuller District School to Grade 8. He lived and worked on the family farm, which was eight miles northwest of Rimbey, until he went to work around the Edson area in the oil patch for several years. This is where he met Rilda DeWalt, and together they came home to the family farm where they started their life-long career farming and raising their children. Silvio loved to farm as he loved the land. He worked many winters truck hauling for Jordan’s Equipment in Rimbey to help supplement the farm income as well. Silvio also loved the outdoors; where one could always find him working the land, tending the animals, seeding the crops, fencing, or fixing machinery.

He worked hard, but always had time to help his children and grandchildren with their math (Dad was great at math), teach them how to play crib, and he always helped his neighbours. In the winters, Silvio would clear the snow off the dugouts so family and friends could skate and play ice hockey; and in the summers, he would help his children learn how to swim in the dugouts. Silvio believed that a man’s handshake was as good as his word. He was extremely neat and took a lot of pride in everything he did. Silvio also cherished the tractor rides he gave his grandchildren…complete with vanilla ice cream treats to follow which was Dad’s favorite!

Silvio will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his children: JoAnne (Wilfred) Curtis of Red Deer; Silvio Jr. (Laurie) Resta of Red Deer; Jordan (Mary) Resta of Red Deer; Judy (John) Ring of Hinton; Jacquie Sullivan of Red Deer; and Karen (Ed) Yetter of Blackfalds; as well as 14 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister, Gloria Valette of Edmonton; and his two brothers, Adrian (Thelma) Resta of Rimbey; and Bruno (Phyllis) Resta of Carstairs; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Silvio was also predeceased by his parents, Felix and Silvia Resta.

A Celebration of Silvio’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Hennig and Pastor Peter Van Katwyk officiating. Interment followed in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. Bentley skating club set to go

The Bentley Skating Club is gearing up for another season.

They will again be offering lessons for "Steppers" with little to no experience, "Gliders" who can get themselves up off the ice, and "Striders", skaters that can get themselves up off the ice and have some basic skills. There were about 30 skaters last year.

Starting at the beginning of October, all the half hour lessons this year will be on Wednesday afternoons at

the Bentley Arena. They will start at 3:45 p.m. for the Steppers, 4:15 p.m. for the Gliders, and at 4:45 p.m. for the Striders.

Joslyn Snow, who has been helping with skate club since 2009 and figure skated and played hockey as a youth, is the instructor.

She can accommodate up to 15 students per class.

A child must be at last three years of age, have their own proper fitting skates, and wear a CSA certified hockey helmet (cage not mandatory).

is the president. Jamie Wilkins is the vice president. Pam Stephenson is the secretary, and Pat Madden is the Casino chairman.

A registration night was held September 29 at the elementary school but late registrations will be accepted as long as the appropriate class is not full.

Bentley fair bench show baking and sewing results

September 18 was a cool morning but some Bentley school students were busy cooking up a storm outside on big barbeques.

For the second year, the school's welcome back breakfast was ham-and-eggers with hash browns prepared by leadership team students from grades six and up who want to be part of the team.

The cooking was done outside in the elementary school parking lot, and people ate inside the elementary gym where coffee and juice was supplied and students had set up tables and chairs.

About 300 plates were served, compar-

ative to last year's numbers, with almost $920 raised to go towards school field trips.

Students later watched a Terry Fox movie.

At noon a complimentary hotdog and chips lunch was offered by the parent council before students set out just after 1 p.m. on a designated route around town for the Terry Fox Run. Back at the school after completing the course there were games and more "special races".

Many had collected pledges for the Terry Fox Foundation.

About 320 people, including some kindergarten, staff, and parents, took part in the day.
