Young local woman making a difference globally Zainab Mohamoud overseeing new school project in Somalia

A

local woman recently returned from Boame, Somalia, where she oversaw the construction of a school named Education for Somali Girls and Boys.

Zainab Mohamoud has been working towards this goal for many years and was overwhelmed to finally see the school built with students, teachers and community members all there to celebrate.

“It was amazing, I was really happy. All of the kids were so excited and everyone was happy - it was all just very overwhelming,” she said.

“There was a women’s organization I working with, and they sponsored the food for the grand opening. They organized some heritage dancers - men and women dancing and wearing traditional clothes and everything. The community leader came for the grand opening and we had different speeches. My auntie even came from another city, so that was also very exciting, but it was all very exciting.”

Mohamoud fled Somalia in 1994 during a civil war, eventually making her way to Canada in 1997. At this time in her life, she was not allowed to go to school, which troubled her, as she was eager to learn. Ever since leaving Somalia, she has made it part of her mission to help children, both in Canada and back in Somalia.

Last year, Mohamoud was still in the fundraising process. Earlier this year, she left Canada with approximately $48,000 on a two month trip where she would oversee the construction of the school. She paid her own expenses for the trip to ensure all of that money went to the school.

Sadly, when she arrived, she learned the cost of the construction had raised dramatically.

“In Somalia, I found the foreman and talked to him and asked him for an estimate again, because the last one we got was about a year ago. This estimate was close to $60,000. The money we had was about $48,000 so it seemed impossible. Plus, with

the exchange rate and things like that, we lost about $10,000,” she explained.

Mohamoud said she realized she needed to make a decision and suggested that the school’s library get put on hold, as well as reducing the number of boys’ and girls’ bathrooms each down to one, rather than two.

Luckily, the foreman agreed to work around their budget.

“He was really great and said, ‘I’m not going to leave anything - I’ll make it happen.’ He actually managed it with the money we had to build everything that we planned. That is a library, four classrooms, two girls washrooms and two for boys, and the offices.”

For six weeks, Mohamoud went to the construction site every day to help oversee and organize the build. She was told by the project foreman that projects like these often take up to six months, rather than weeks, but she and the workers made sure it was completed before she returned home for September.

“A good thing about the trip was when we needed more money, we had some family members who sent us almost $5,000. We were short money and some more people donated, so we were able to use that for the work. We ended up with about $52,000 and that included the furniture and finishings and everything,” she said.

The surrounding community near Boame became involved with the school’s construction.

Mohamoud said there are business owners and community members who donated and who have committed to help keep the school running into the future.

“Some of our tribes that live in the area got interested, and paid for six months’ of operations costs for the school,” she said.

“We have six months covered with them, but another organization from Kuwait became interested and they have said that starting in February, they will sponsor 200 kids to come to school. They’re interested in paying each child $50 a month - that gift is like thousands of dollars a month. It would cover feeding and living at the institution.”

She has been working towards this goal for a number of years, and through fundraising and sponsorships was able to complete it this month. At this time there are about 200 students registered to attend the school.

Through the next year, she will continue to fundraise in Central Alberta and beyond. She is even planning to travel to several U.S states, as well as four European countries to further her connections and seek sponsorship.

“Right now we have a lot of people from different small towns who can’t come to the city because they don’t have family where the kids can stay.

We’re also going to accept some

orphan kids, too. We want all of those kids to be able to come to the school,” Mohamoud said.

A major fundraising Gala event will be taking place next February. Additionally, Mohamoud and her group of volunteers will continue to host numerous bake sales and will seek sponsorship from personal connections.

“In part of Somalia, there are some people with businesses, and also people from Kenya and South Africa - who have also said that they would help us too. Everybody is kind of getting interested and they want to help us, so I think we can make it happen,” she said.

“The mayor made an interesting comment. The first time we met, he said he wanted to call the school ‘Open the Door’.

I asked him what was behind that and he said, ‘You’re opening the doors for the kids who are less fortunate and who have less opportunities.When they heard about the school, their morale got higher,’” she explained.

Local race car driver on the road to ending distracted driving A young community member has taken it upon himself to use his rare position as a race car driver to promote the idea of ending distracted driving.

Parker Thompson, 17, is entering his second year of promoting the Drive to Stay Alive campaign, taking the program national this year. He has committed to speaking to peers across the province and country to help students and teachers recognize the growing danger that is distracted driving.

“It’s something that is really close to my heart and I want to put an end to it,” Thompson said while visiting Notre Dame High School last week.

“I wanted to find something to give back to not only Red Deer, but all of Alberta and eventually Canada. This seems to be a growing, emerging problem and I don’t see anybody else really tapping into it. There isn’t another

campaign out there targeting distracted driving, especially in Alberta. This is something close to my heart - I know what crashes can do to the human body, and I’ve been in my fair share of accidents with racing. It’s the same with street cars - if you get into a crash, it’s always possible to be life threatening.”

Thompson said he started the campaign because his family friends had been affected in more ways than one by distracted driving accidents. He said as he began to look into the problem more it bothered him that no one was campaigning against the issue.

“I know how deadly distracted driving is and I started looking into the facts of how the problem is always rising and getting worse, and saw nobody was really doing anything about it. That’s kind of why I took on the initia-

tive myself to end distracted driving,” he said.

Parker Thompson He said he is happy to be working towards ending the issue and feels he is in a unique position in that kids can relate to him.

“I really feel it’s getting through to the kids. Being a peer to them, being a 17 year old in Grade 12 really helps because when I get up on the stage, their not thinking, oh another lecture presentation. We have some fun, and have a good time but also have to get through the facts of how dangerous distracted driving truly is.”

The Drive to Stay Alive campaign is using social

media as a means to engage the youth especially, but also as a tool to spread awareness of the topic in communities that are visited on campaign stops.

“We use social media in every aspect of our day, and I’d rather the kids tweeted productive things to the campaign to help stop distracted driving than just be fooling around on their phones during the presentations,” he said.

“We know they’re going to be on their phones anyway, so we just use our social media to keep them engaged and interactive with the presentations.

Through that use of social media, we can engage the communities we enter.

“Through social media, a lot of people have come forward and said a family member or friend of theirs has been affected by distracted driving and they share what’s done to them. A lot of the public doesn’t know that 80 per cent of our crashes that happen on Alberta roads are related to distracted driving. That’s huge. To really get that through to these students and to have them realize how big of a problem it is in our province is great,” he added.

Thompson and his team have been using the slogan, ‘Five seconds can change your life forever’ to help get their message across.

“I think the biggest thing is that people come forward and realize what a change in their life five seconds can make - that short statement has been our kind of theme to the entire campaign. It’s all about how quickly your life can change writing one text,” he said.

Council approves changes to snow and ice program Red Deer City council has approved changes for the second year of the snow and ice program.

“Last year we established specific service levels that were responsive and ensured residents could move safely through our community,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“Based on a rigorous evaluation of the program, along with feedback from residents, we’ve adopted changes that will further contribute to safety, accessibility and mobility throughout our community.”

When the snow hits the ground this year, residents will notice changes including Green and Grey routes both plowed within 15 days of a 10 cm snowpack, improving operational efficiencies and allowing Green and Grey routes to be completed in each snow zone at the same time. As well, windrows from front driveways

will be cleared by City crews; this snow will be moved to the windrows on the remainder of the street, which may potentially impact the height of the windrows and onstreet parking. Public sidewalks will also be cleared within three days of a snow event. And when it makes sense to do so operationally, Orange routes (industrial and commercial areas) may be plowed sooner than the 15 cm snowpack trigger.

“We significantly transformed snow plowing in our City last year with the new snow and ice program,” said Elaine Vincent, director of development services. “The changes we’ve made for the second year further strengthen the program, and allow us to operate more efficiently while continuing to plow sooner, faster and more often.”

The new snow and ice program was launched

last winter, following exceptional snowfall during the 2013/2014 season. The program, which set out new triggers and targets for snow plowing to be phased in over two years, was approved by council in October 2014.

The snow zone and route system will continue to be used this year to better schedule and communicate snow plowing operations with residents.

“Last year, over 10,000 vehicles were left on the street, which drastically slowed down our operations,” said Vincent. “This year we will be ticketing vehicles left on the street, so we’re asking residents to know their snow zone and route, check the schedule and move their vehicle.”

Calkins is seeking re-election in the new federal riding of Red Deer-Lacombe, which covers a large area including north Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Eckville and Ponoka.

Calkins, who has served as MP for the past nine years in the riding of Wetaskiwin, said he is encouraged by the positive support he has received so far on the campaign trail.

“I’m really impressed with how many young people are getting involved and understanding what the stakes are in this election as far as our economy and as far as our whole country is concerned,” he said.

Calkins said he’s been out to many doorsteps in north Red Deer and has visited all the communities within the riding to meet with voters and hear their concerns.

“It’s a long campaign but the pace is a little bit more tempered, so I get to spend more time which is actually better,” he said. “It’s been a much better campaign from that perspective.”

Calkins said one of the main issues he is hearing at the door is the economy, particularly from those who work in the energy sector and the oil patch.

“We’ve got one hit already with the low oil prices and of course, there’s been some compounding issues from tax hikes at the provincial level that have made it even worse,” he said. “A lot of people are worried about being able to get back to work and being able to feed their families. That’s the focus that we’ve (the Conservatives) had all along. By keeping taxes low at both the corporate and business levels, taxes for individuals and families and even dropping the GST, people have had more resources to look after themselves with, to grow our economy and to grow their businesses.”

He said Prime Minister Stephen Harper has policies already in place and he is doing a great job in responding to those big economic questions. “We’ve (Canada) got the wealthiest middle class in the world, the best net growth record in the G7 since the recession, the best debt to GDP ratio in the G7, the OECD has us on

Blaine Calkins target for the best economic growth, we had a balanced budget last year and we are already poised for a surplus,” he said of Canada’s current economic standing.

“We did have a little dip in growth, but when you compare Canada to what every other country is doing, we are fairing a lot better. That doesn’t mean that everything is great and rosy for everybody, but we sure are fairing a lot better. When you get those economic fundamentals right, then you are in good shape going forward.”

Calkins grew up on a farm just north of Lacombe and still calls the City his home.

With an early background in agriculture, followed by a career in wildlife conservation, he also worked as a computer systems technician at Agriculture Financial Services Corporation in Lacombe and as an instructor at Red Deer College.

“In the background, I was on Lacombe town council and volunteering for the Conservative cause behind the scenes federally for a long time and then eventually, when the previous MP decided he was going to retire, I put my hat in the ring,” said Calkins.

He was first elected as MP in the former riding of Wetaskiwin in 2006 and then was re-elected in 2008 followed by the 2011 federal election. news@lacombeexpress.com

OPINION Raising awareness about breast cancer this month October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and although we hear it often, it’s true – almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way or another whether it be a family member, friend, co-worker or even yourself who has battled the disease.

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation web site, an estimated one in nine Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. In 2015, it is estimated that 25,000 Canadian women and 220 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s also estimated that 5,000 women and 60 men will die of the disease.

Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosis in women in Canada over the age of 20 and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian women, after lung cancer. But thanks to the work of dedicated breast cancer scientists and clinicians we are seeing more targeted and less invasive

treatments, fewer side effects and better outcomes.

The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer also increases with age. In 2015, it is estimated that 82% of new breast cancer cases will would occur in Canadian women over the age of 50 – 52% of breast cancers will be diagnosed in women 50 to 69 years of age and 30 % of breast cancers will be diagnosed in women over the age of 69.

About one in five breast cancers (18%) will be diagnosed in women less than 50 years of age. For women 30 to 49 years of age, the risk of being diagnosed with any type of cancer is 0.2% (or one in 500).

While this risk is very low, about 36% of cancers diagnosed in this age group will be breast cancer.

Fewer women in Canada are dying from breast cancer today than in the past.

Breast cancer deaths have decreased by 43% since they peaked in 1986 due to earlier detection through regular mammography screening, advances in screening

technology, and improved treatments.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation encourages women and men to practice breast awareness – to know how your breasts normally look and feel, and what changes to check for and discuss with a health care provider. Even though many breast changes are normal, some changes are not.

Unusual changes can be caused by a benign (noncancerous) condition, or they may be a sign of cancer. Most breast changes will not be breast cancer, but should be checked by a health care provider.

Meanwhile, this weekend, thousands of supporters will gather for the annual Run for the Cure. Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest single-day event of its kind in Canada. Thousands of Canadians come together in communities across the country to raise funds, awareness and contribute to creating a future without breast cancer.

Set for Oct. 4th, the CIBC Run for the Cure will be held at Bower Ponds. Registration is at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Warm up is at 9:50 a.m. with start of run at 10 a.m. and the start of the walk at 10:15 a.m. There will be an awards celebration at 11 a.m.

The event is a 5 km or 1 km walk or run.

Last year, the CIBC Run for the Cure raised more than $25 million. In Red Deer alone, the local event raised $206,000 with about 900 participants.

Now, that is something Red Deerians can be proud of.

Organization representatives say that support of the event helps fund groundbreaking research, education and advocacy initiatives across Canada.

What politicians must learn from Pope Francis’ leadership style Politicians would love to have the approval ratings of Pope Francis. His popularity crosses party lines and spills over the borders of the tiny state he heads.

The spiritual leader of the Catholic church may be the most influential and galvanizing leader on the world stage. But leadership traits alone cannot fully explain the Francis effect.

Francis is a case study in leadership; he has every attribute that shows up on checklists for good leaders. He is willing to take risks and to effect change.

He delegates and allows people to do their jobs.

He seeks advice from different voices, including dissenting ones. He will act unilaterally if necessary. He puts the good of the organization first. And, while good leaders are accessible, Francis finds novel ways to be present for people. He leads by ex-

Politicians share many of these traits. Yet, as we are seeing during this election campaign, here at home as well as south of the border, few politicians enjoy the same level of popularity as the pope. In my view, this is because leadership cannot be boiled down to a checklist of behaviours.

Leadership requires more than mastery of a set of skills. Outstanding leaders also communicate through words and deeds the type of person they are and the values that inform their life. We might refer to this as the leader’s

spirituality.

Apart from all of his leadership qualities, I think that people are attracted to the spirituality of Francis. His humility and respect for others reflect his understanding of service, and his commitment to placing people, not dogma, at the centre of his papacy.

It would be unfair to make a direct comparison between the leadership style of Francis and those individuals presently seeking the top job in the nation. After all, Francis does not have to worry about getting elected or coming up with a platform that appeals to a majority of voters. But there is one page from his playbook that national party leaders might consider imitating.

Francis inherited a church rife with problems.

He identified one of these problems as clericalism,

the focus on privilege, status and power that separates priests from the people they are supposed to serve. One way to combat the tendency towards clericalism is to take on the smell of sheep. “Priests”, said Francis, “Should be shepherds living with the smell of sheep.”

Our national party leaders say they walk and talk with ordinary Canadians.

They speak eloquently about what the average Canadian thinks. Each of them would have us believe that he alone has the pulse of the nation. But it is obvious from watching the televised coverage of the leaders’ tour that no one is taking on the multitude of smells that permeate the pasture.

The majority of people who attend the campaign events are party faithful.

In fact, some events are by invitation only. Campaign

organizers carefully select the individuals who stand adoringly behind the leader, nodding in agreement as he presents his platform and denigrates the platform of the other guys.

The political backdrop of faces sends a visual message of diversity and support for the leader. The group is there to make the leader seem like one of us, to humanize him and the party’s policies, and to persuade us to enter their sheepfold.

Our national party leaders are accustomed to the smell of their own sheep pen. That is not necessarily bad, but it limits perspective. Leaders may miss the bleating of dissonant voices with good ideas, voices that could help the country become more prosperous and equitable.

This hanging around at the centre of one’s pen

does not end with the campaign. It makes it way into government in the form of partisanship.

The centre of the sheep pen does not afford a complete view of the farm, or the pastures beyond. As Francis observed while visiting a parish at the edge of Rome shortly after he became pope, “We understand reality better not from the centre, but from the outskirts In an election campaign, party leaders try to convince voters that their party has the best ideas.

After the election, the top dog would do well to seek perspectives and incorporate worthy ideas that come from outside the party fold.

Red Deer transit receives provincial funding The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County will recieve new funding in support of transit services.

The Alberta Government announced GreenTRIP grants to the City and County on Monday in support of the purchase of clean buses and a new rural transit initiative.

The announcement included $9.5 million to purchase 10 new buses using compressed natural gas (CNG), four CNG paratransit buses, new system-wide intelligent location technology and the purchase of a low floor diesel bus for the County for its rural transit initiative.

“Our government is committed to building healthy, sustainable communities by investing in transit in the Red Deer region and throughout Alberta,” said Brian Mason, minister of transportation.

Estimated costs of the new buses includes $3.7 million for 10 new CNG buses and $300,000 for four CNG paratransit buses for the City of Red Deer. Another

$2.5 million will be invested to install CNG infrastructure as well as $2.75 million for intelligent location technology. The County of Red Deer will also see a new low floor diesel bus at a cost of $320,000.

“This GreenTRIP grant will ease congestion by increasing transit options for riders while significantly lowering fuel costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Tara Veer, mayor of Red Deer.

The Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP) is one of the many programs municipalities can access to support local priorities to provide sustainable public transit alternatives. Municipalities can apply for GreenTRIP capital funding to help purchase transit vehicles and technologies, build transit terminals and expand light rail transit services that increase ridership and reduce traffic congestion.

CITY BRIEFS COUNCIL ATTENDS AUMA While attending the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) conference last week, Mayor Tara Veer and members of council took the opportunity to meet with members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to discuss issues that are important to Red Deerians.

“We had several meetings with ministers.

Having the opportunity to sit down with our provincial representatives allows us to build our relationship with the new government and raise issues of importance for our City – Alberta’s third largest municipality. We believe that building strong cities and communities results in a strong Alberta,” said Veer.

Meetings were held with the Ministers of Municipal Affairs, Aboriginal Relations, Justice and Solicitor General, Transportation, Infrastructure, and the Deputy Commissioner for the RCMP K Division.

Some of the items on the agendas included the need for an expanded courthouse, sustainable municipal financing, and the importance of funding for the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) “We will continue to advocate for Red Deer and our citizens on a provincial and national level to ensure our issues are being heard,” Veer said. “In particular, we are happy to know that

by Mark Weber amendments to the Municipal Government Act will all be in place for 2017. This is something to look forward to as we have been told that the amendments will resolve a number of outstanding issues of importance to municipalities.

Each of the meetings held last week will be followed up with a letter to the ministers formally documenting the discussions and ensure follow-up meetings are held on all the items discussed.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE REPLACEMENT The south pedestrian bridge in Coronation Park will close for construction starting Sept.

30th, weather permitting. Crews will be onsite to remove the existing bridge and will be replacing it with a new structure after a 2013 inspection determined it has reached the end of its useful life expectancy.

The new structure will complement the formal and natural surroundings found in Coronation Park and retain the aesthetic appeal associ-

ated with the current structure.

Recognizing the bridge, just north of Ross Street and west of 45th Ave., is commonly used for family and wedding photographs, those interested in capturing the bridge before its removal are encouraged to do so prior to the closure. Residents are reminded to obey posted signage and remain a safe distance away from the area during the construction. Estimated completion time for the project is two weeks.

Anne L. Gaetz celebrates 50 years

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Community members gathered at Annie L. Gaetz last week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school as well as the modernization of the facility that has taken place.

Students, present and former staff and various members of the community were present to celebrate the occasion.

Principal Kevin Robertson, new to the Annie L. Gaetz staff this year, was excited to be a part of the event.

“It’s been electric - the energy that I see and the smile on the faces that I’m seeing. We had some people from the community who have been around the school for 30 years and they are just in awe of the beauty of the school - the openness, the brightness and the warmth of it. It just feels so neat to be part of something so special, and so new,” Robertson said.

“We have an absolutely beautiful building here that supports learning. Being part of this community and this family of Annie L. Gaetz has been so good. The parents have really been supportive, our staff have been amazing and there is excitement and energy about being here, being back home in our school.

“It’s been such an amazing journey for us.”

Robertson explained the school had undergone major renovations that essentially rebuilt the school from the ground up. He said walls and classrooms have been moved, the library was relocated and the school is brighter and more open than before.

He said a tremendous amount of work had gone into the building, and that the

Annie L. Gaetz staff and students appreciated all of the help that brought them a brand new school.

“The first three weeks have just been a whirlwind. We put in so much work just to get ready for the school year, we had a lot to get done and a lot of people pitched into it. We were so excited to have this many people show up to our celebration we weren’t expecting it at all,” Robertson said.

“It’s been just great to see the turnout and the positive energy and thrill about being here. We’re really looking forward to a fantastic year.”

All indoor renovations are complete with a little work remaining on the outside of the facility. An outdoor classroom was designed within a courtyard and this part of the school is still under construction. Robertson said aside from that and some landscaping, the school is completely finished after a lengthy renovation process.

The school celebrated 50 years of being in the community by hosting previous staff members, community members and members of the Red Deer Public School Board in the new gymnasium. Students put together songs and presentations, and then offered the community tours around the new facility.

“With all of the people that came back to us today, everyone feels like they are a part of this and it’s great. Even though they’ve moved onto retirement or other positions, everyone feels that this is a big part of what they are and who they are.

To see so many faces and to talk to them this morning makes us all so proud,” Robertson said. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

THREE ARRESTED Red Deer RCMP arrested a woman and two men on Sept.

21st after receiving numerous reports the trio were driving through the City pointing an imitation firearm at people.

Throughout the afternoon, RCMP received a number of reports of a black Ford Edge driving erratically and of its occupants pointing a firearm at people as they drove by.

Shortly after 5 p.m. police located the suspect vehicle on Gaetz Avenue southbound in downtown Red Deer; when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.

RCMP did not pursue for public safety reasons, but continued to search for the vehicle as further reports came in from citizens regarding its movements.

RCMP located the abandoned vehicle in a parking lot in the Highland Green neighbourhood shortly after 6 p.m.

Police officers contained the area and soon located the three suspects on foot in the area of 57th St. and 60th Ave. They were taken into custody without further incident and police seized a replica firearm.

The black Ford Edge had been reported stolen out of Norglenwold on Sept. 4th.

POLICE WARN ABOUT SCAM A new scam is surfacing in Red Deer, another variation on the usual intrusive phone call from a pushy, quick-talking person who’s trying to part you from your money.

This time, the scammers are claiming to be from Publisher’s Clearing House.

In a recent Red Deer file, the scammer said his intended victim had won $7,000 a month for life, but that he needed to wire $2,000 in order to claim the prize.

Fortunately, a family member intervened and educated the intended victim before it was too late.

Publisher’s Clearing House does legitimately exist, and they do award prizes in a similar manner to what the scammer claimed. The catch, of course, is that no legitimate organization will ever require the ‘winner’ to send money in order to claim a prize.

Woodlea – one of Red Deer’s oldest neighbourhoods This year marks the 110th anniversary of one of Red Deer’s oldest neighborhoods, Woodlea, which lies north of Ross Street and south of 55th St., with Waskasoo Creek on the west and the base of the East (Michener) Hill on the east.

In pre-settlement times, the Red Deer River valley was incredibly fertile.

It was covered with thick grasslands, interspersed with willow bunches and aspen poplar groves. The richness of the area attracted Rev. Leonard Gaetz and his family to settle here in 1884.

In 1890, Rev. Gaetz struck a deal with the CalgaryEdmonton Railway Company to create the townsite of Red Deer.

However, area to the east continued to be part of his farm.

One of the challenges to travel across the valley, for the Gaetz family and others, was Waskasoo Creek.

In the early days, it was not a gentle streamlet. It was so full of water that it was a popular fishing spot.

In the springtime, or during heavy summer rains, the creek could turn into a dangerous raging torrent.

DAWE There were other obstacles.

By the river, there was a heavy swampy area, now part of the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. The township road – now known as 55th St., but at various times known as Douglas Street or the Cemetery Hill - was very steep and difficult to use in icy conditions or wet weather.

The alternative was to head south to what is now Ross Street, and use the deep coulee formed by a creek that drained the large sloughs in the Grandview area.

However, in the years following the turn of the century, Red Deer began to grow very rapidly.

The population jumped from a mere 323 in 1901 to more than 1,500 within four years. Red Deer began to extend beyond the boundaries of the original townsite.

Leonard Gaetz, and his second eldest son Halley, consequently decided to develop the Woodlea area as a new subdivision.

The district was to have larger and longer lots than in other areas of the town.

Also, Woodlea was to be the first subdivision in Red Deer where the streets and avenues varied from the standard rectangular pattern. In particular, there was to be a Woodlea Crescent and a Circle Street.

The new subdivision proved to be very popular.

Sales of lots were brisk.

The first homes were soon built near Waskasoo Creek on Waskasoo (45th) Avenue and Poplar (46th) Avenue.

Later, several more houses were built, by the creek and along Bank Street (44th Ave.) at the foot of the hill.

In 1914, the First World War broke out. Growth in Red Deer came to a screeching halt. Woodlea became a quiet ‘urban fringe’ area, with large open spaces.

In 1923, the Nazarene Church bought a large piece of land in Woodlea and turned it into a church

It soon became one of the largest evangelical revival centres in Alberta. In 1924, group of Chinese businessmen acquired another large piece of land on the eastern side of Woodlea.

This was later taken over the Wah King and Sam Wong and operated as the Sam Wo Market Gardens.

In 1962, the nurseries/ gardens moved farther east into the Balmoral District, along 39th Ave. where it still exists today.

In the years following the Second World War, Red Deer began to grow very rapidly and there was a tremendous demand for new housing.

Waskasoo areas were particularly attractive. The old Chinese market gardens and the Nazarene Camp were consequently subdivided into residential lots in the early 1950s.

Today, Woodlea remains one of the most attractive and popular subdivisions in Red Deer. There is also a strong and vibrant community association in the district.

Heritage Lanes Comedy Zone has been running for two years in Red Deer. Every Thursday in The Heritage Lanes Lounge we convert it into a comedy club where we feature different headliners and up and coming local comics.

The show was started as an open mic to develop the comedy scene in Red Deer. In the past those interested in doing stand up had to drive to Edmonton or Calgary, now Red Deer has more than one open mic for young budding comics to work on their material. The local comedy

RDSO gears up for stellar season Local fans of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra will be excited to see the launch of a brand new season this weekend at the Red Deer College Arts Centre.

The season kicks off with ‘Una Noche en Espana’ on Oct. 3rd on the Arts Centre mainstage featuring the Amadeus Guitar Duo. The audience will enjoy a wonderful evening of musical tapas, featuring Spanish morsels performed by the German/Canadian Amadeus Guitar Duo with Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchhoff. Musical highlights include Falla’s El Corregidor y la Molinera, Rodrigo’s Concerto Madrigal and Montes’ Surama.

Next up in the series is ‘A Celtic Christmas’, which runs Dec. 12th on the Arts Centre mainstage as well.

This performance features the talents of Keri Zwicker (harp and voice).’

Fire Prevention Week kicks off in City next week Local fire department to host annual open house this weekend

Students, clubs and associations are invited to book a tour of any of our stations. During your tour, you’ll be given the opportunity to learn about safety and view department vehicles that are used daily in helping to keep you and the community safe. Please note that tours are available for groups ages five and older, and a minimum of 10 people.

Please adhere to the following guidelines while visiting the firehall: - Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult(s) at all times.

- Tour groups must be prepared to leave the firehall in the event the Emergency Services staff are dispatched to a call. Tour groups will not be allowed to stay in the hall, regardless of weather conditions. For this request we require adequate transportation to remain on-site at all times.

- You must arrive and depart as a group to allow for minimal disruption of on-duty crews.

- Do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your scheduled tour.

- Due to limited space in our stations, we ask your group size to stay below a maximum of 25 people, including supervisors.

- Please call to cancel your tour if you are unable to attend. Phone 403-346-5511.

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Local officials are gearing up for Fire Prevention Week and are looking forward to educating the public on the importance of making sure their smoke alarms are in good working order.

Fire Prevention Week will take place Oct. 4th – 10th and this year’s theme is ‘Hear the beep where you sleep’.

“Fire Prevention Week is an important yearly reminder for fire safety and to get out there and teach kids and remind adults about fire safety,” said Shane Dussault, fire prevention officer with the City of Red Deer.

“THE NEW BUILDING CODE STATES THAT THERE MUST BE SMOKE ALARMS IN ALL HOMES IN A NEW BUILD OR IF THERE IS A MAJOR RENOVATION. WE ARE GLAD TO SEE THE BUILDING CODE STANDARDS CHANGING, BUT THE IMPORTANT PART IS THAT PEOPLE PROPERLY MAINTAIN THEIR SMOKE DETECTORS. IT’S ONLY GOING TO HELP YOU IF YOU HAVE MAINTAINED IT.”

“The new Building Code states that there must be smoke alarms in all homes in a new build or if there is a major renovation. We are glad to see the Building Code standards changing, but the important part is that people properly maintain their smoke detectors. It’s only going to help you if you have maintained it.”

In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, officials encourage the public to attend an open house at the downtown fire hall (4941 46 St.) on Oct. 3rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The family-friendly event will include a free barbeque, tours of the fire hall, fire extinguisher demonstrations and training and also a fire demonstration, among other activities.

“At 1 p.m. we will be doing a live burn

Fire Prevention Week puts focus on putting smoke alarms in the bedrooms to show how fast a fire can go,” said Dussault. “It draws a lot of attention.

People don’t understand how fast things can burn and how flammable the contents of a room can be.”

According to the Home Safety Program 2014 report which was done by the City of Red Deer Emergency Services, there were 39 reportable residential fires which resulted in a loss of more than $3 million. Of those fires, 10 were caused by improperly discarded smokers’ material and seven were are a result of unattended cooking.

As well, of those 39 fires in Red Deer last year, eight of the properties did not have working smoke alarms.

An important tip for homeowners in regards to fire safety is to remember to check that their smoke alarms are working and to remember to change the batteries.

“We suggest changing the batteries once a year,” said Dussault. “We would recommend if homeowners are replacing their smoke alarms to go to the 10-year battery so the battery lasts the life of the smoke alarm, so it’s 10 years that a person doesn’t have to remember to change the batteries.”

In addition, during Fire Prevention Week, fire officials will give local schools an opportunity to bring students in Grade 2-4 to the Memorial Centre to hear a presentation on fire safety. “We used to go around to the schools but we found that bringing the kids in is easier. It’s great to interact with the students - especially with our Fire Chief for a Day contest that we have in the schools right now. The student who is named Fire Chief for a Day gets a pizza party with their class, they get a tour of the fire station and they get

Statistics from the United States show that at least one half of all home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., the time when most people are asleep. Canadian experts are certain the same trend exists here. To emphasize the importance of being awakened during an overnight fire emergency, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is placing increasing focus on having a working fire alarm in every home bedroom with their theme - ‘Hear The Beep Where You Sleep.’

“We know that smoke alarms double your family’s chance of a safe escape. But to provide that critical early warning, they need to be installed in all the required locations and they need to be working,” said Carol Heller, a home safety specialist with Kidde Canada, the country’s leading smoke and carbon monoxide alarm manufacturer.

Canada’s National Building Code calls for the installation of hardwired smoke alarms in all bedrooms for newly constructed homes. But for existing and older homes, it is largely up to individuals to make the right safety decisions. At a minimum, smoke or combination smoke/CO alarms should be installed outside every sleeping area.

Across North America, from Oct. 4th-10th, fire departments will be reinforcing the basics of home fire safety.

school visits by firefighters and a myriad other special community events to educate and promote awareness for fire safety.

“Fire Prevention Week is a great time to remind people that if you’ve taken down a smoke alarm after burning the toast and forgotten to put it back up, or removed batteries and left an alarm unpowered, you are placing your family at serious risk,” said Heller. “This is not a trivial issue. In almost two-thirds of fatal house fires, investigators find that smoke alarms were either not present or were missing batteries.”

Heller’s other cautionary advice centres on aging smoke alarms. She is quick to point out that even if an alarm sounds when you push its test button, that only means circuits are working and power is getting to the unit. It does not mean the alarm’s sensors are operating at full sensitivity.

After being exposed to years of dust, cooking grime, pet fur and other airborne contaminants Heller warned sensors can lose responsiveness, possibly slowing the alarm’s reaction time and reducing escape time. That’s why the NFPA recommends that if your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old or you can’t remembers its age, whether it is hardwired or battery powered, replace it immediately.

ENTERTAINMENT Dean Brody brings co-headlining tour to Red Deer

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Country artist Dean Brody is set to hit the stage in Red Deer next week alongside Paul Brandt for their co-headline tour, The Road Trip Tour.

The duo plays the Centrium Oct. 6th.

“So far, so good - what a blast,” said Brody of the tour so far. “It’s been awesome.”

Brody recently released his fifth CD Gypsy Road. The record features the top 10 single Upside Down which also recently landed CMT Video of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards.

Gypsy Road has been described as his most winning and original collection of songs, a fact confirmed by the first single Upside Down. It’s fitting for a guy already possessed of a boatload of CCMA and JUNO Awards including twin 2014 Country Album of the Year prizes for his fourth disc, Crop Circles.

“It was really cool - we had never won in that category before,” he said of the clip which was shot in California and directed by Margaret Malandruccolo.

“I’ve worked with some amazing directors, and Margaret is one of them. It was really cool to share this with her, and see her win as well because she really is an amazing director and visionary.

“You just never know - sometimes you do a video that is a little bit less involved and it gets nominated, and then there might be something you spend more time on and it doesn’t get nominated.”

The link throughout Gyspy Road is Brody’s ability to tell stories that resonate emotionally as well as musically, creating characters that scan as real people.

“It’s funny but I can’t really write for more than an hour at a time,” he said. “After that I start to lose perspective,” he said.

“A lot of my songwriting comes out of editing. I’ll write something, then walk away from it

“I have instruments scattered all over the place and I like noodling on things. I learned three chords on the ukulele and wanted to try and write something,” he said. “I think it really helped take Upside Down into a more playful, summery place. You can’t write a ballad on a ukulele,” he laughs. “I try and do something different - I don’t want to put out songs like a cookie cutter or in a template kind of process.

“I don’t really consider myself as good a songwriter as an editor. I have friends who can sit down and write a song in three hours and they can have perspective on it. For me, I need to step back from it.

“I might come back to it the next day and think where it needs to go. The editor in me says I need to change this part of it, or make it go in this direction.

I have friends who can get that bird’s eye view of a song in a mo-

ment; for me, it takes me time to get that bird’s eye view.

“It’s like brainstorming - there aren’t really bad ideas - you just kind of throw them out there and put together a skeleton of a song. It’s like framing a house.

You get get the melody down which is the framing and then you finish the house and that’s the lyrics.

“It’s really magical how it starts out as something you do off in a corner somewhere, and you have no idea whether it’s going to resonate or not. Then you go into the studio, the musicians put their hands to it and their art, and the song builds into something that everybody hears and recognizes. It’s exciting being a songwriter, because you can see it go from zero to 100.”

Early influences in Brody’s musical journey run the gamut from Dwight Yoakam to Johnny Cash.

He came across a book called Remember Me, Rescue Me written by English writer Matt Roper who journeyed to Brazil to learn about that country’s horrif-

Roper was all set to sign up for journalism school in London when he abruptly left the office, hopped a jetliner to Brazil and launched his search for contacts to help tell the story. He’d already grown quite familiar with the country after doing research for an earlier book called Street Girls.

That harrowing tale told the story of what it meant to, “Create a new prospect of hope and life for young girls” who would otherwise have little or nothing to look forward to.

Ben Kunder featured Oct. 3rd at The Hideout

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Ben Kunder was introduced to the arts at a young age, so it was kind of a given he would pursue some sort of artistic expression. For Kunder, it was music. Fans will get a chance to hear tunes from his latest CD Golden on Oct. 3rd at The Hideout.

Golden was recorded in Toronto and was co-produced by John Dinsmore.

From start to finish, there is an authenticity to virtually every song. It’s all powered by Kunder’s vocal abilities which shine with an accomplished versatility as well.

“Both of my parents were in the arts - my mother was an actor and my father was an actor and director, and later became a drama teacher,” he explains during a recent chat. “I grew up being surrounded by it - it was a creative household and we were encouraged to explore our imaginations and creativity.

Kunder’s father was also a huge music lover and a collector, so it wasn’t long before Kunder found a growing interest in music being sparked in his own life. “When it came to music, I was brought up from a very young age to

respect and appreciate music. Not just to listen to it, but also to take something from it - try to understand and empathize.”

As kids, his dad would also take Kunder and his siblings to concerts featuring artists as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and the Chieftains just to name a few. “Then we would get together - being even just six or seven years old and we would hang out after at a coffee shop. He would ask us what we thought about it, or how the concert made us feel,” he said. “So I was brought up to have an opinion and to have that be respected as well.”

Kunder did take piano lessons for a time, but it didn’t really click. Later on, he discovered his dad’s guitar from his university days in the basement.

“Along with it were all of his old music books from the 60s and 70s - Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, for example. So I just taught myself from those books.”

When it came time for post-secondary education, Kunder opted to study theatre at Sheraton College.

So trained as an actor and musical theatre performer, he has a way of breaking down the fourth wall and connecting with people.

His folks encouraged him

to try his hand at theatre as well, so it seemed like the natural course to take.

“I was deciding whether to go to college for music or for theatre. I felt like with music, I was finding my own voice but that with theatre, I could be trained and it might be helpful with performance in general.”

There is no question that choice has enriched his abilities, plus he worked as an actor for years as well. It was a fascinating journey as he would land acting gigs in shows clear across the country, spending months in the middle of scenic B.C. or a few weeks on beautiful Prince Edward Island, he said. “It certainly fed my inspiration for writing about traveling and exploring the country,” he said. “That was something that was always important to me.”

With Golden, “I tried to create an album that had fluidity and was really a cohesive project. I wanted it to also reflect my life of travelling within this country and how that has affected me over the past few years,” he said.

Teaming up with Dinsmore was an absolute gift as well. “He had a home studio, he seemed like a great guy and he has a great resume himself

“His place had a warm nostalgia to it,” he said.

“When we started out, he was not co-producing - he was engineering the record. But after a couple of weeks I started to notice that we were communicating really well and

that he was sharing his thoughts - and they were all great. So I asked him if he wanted to co-produce.”

As said, the results speak for themselves. The project has a polished feel, but there is that compelling sense of ‘realness’ to it, too. The songs never lose their sense of accessibility.

“Once in a while I sit down and it’s like a sudden sun shower,” he explained of the inspiration to write songs. “I’m fully inspired and write a song and know the melody. Usually, I have a bunch of guitar melodies

or I feel inspired to write some poetry and they sort of come together.”

Meanwhile, thanks in part to his background in the arts, being on stage feels like home.

“Because of my acting and performance background I feel really natural in front of people and on stage,” he said. “The difference is I’m sharing something really personal when it comes to music. I try to make a point of being open and connecting.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

The Stanfields launch national tour in support of new CD

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS On the heels of the release of a new CD, Halifax-based The Stanfields have launched a nation-wide tour with a City stop Oct. 2nd at The Vat. There are few bands today who come up with the kind of raw, fiery and truly original tunes these guys do, as heard on their latest project, Modem Operandi, which was released Sept. 18th.

The tour kicked off in Toronto last week at The Horseshoe Tavern.

Modem Operandi, the follow-up to the 2013 acoustic release For King and Country, is the band’s fourth studio album. Earlier releases include Vanguard of the Young and Reckless (2010) and 2012’s Death & Taxes.

As mentioned, the energy and melding of traditional Celtic sensibilities with unabashed rock works wonderfully and its energy doesn’t let up for a second.

The project focuses on themes of political and social dissatisfaction that are brought to light through front man/guitarist Jon Landry’s lyrics, in which he questions ‘democratic rights, issues of

privacy, freedom of speech and the current political climate.’ Rounding out the band are Calen Kinney (fiddle/bouzouki/ vox); Jason MacIsaac (guitar/vox); Dillan Tate (bass/vox) and Mark Murphy (drums/ vox).

“We definitely have our fair share of classic rock in there, but we put our a folk album last year - a ‘live off the floor’ kind of deal,” said Landry. “Basically, we are trying to keep things as interesting for ourselves as we can and hopefully paying it forward that way, too.

“I think we are staying true to what it is that we are wanting to do,” said. “This is our fourth record, and for better or for worse, I’d say that we upset the apple cart in terms of expectations. That’s the most important thing to me - the songs have to move me in some way. If you don’t love something that you have made, how can you make other people love it?”

Hailing from a hamlet in Nova Scotia, Landry was raised in a richly musical family and community.

“We were making up albums when we were seven,” he recalled of his childhood projects with a cousin. “His father was a music teacher and he taught us both how to play.” That love for music continued to evolve through his growing up years even though he got a bit tired of the Celtic thing and ventured over to the ‘NirvanaSeattle-angsty’ scene for a time.

“Especially in my 20s, we kind of ignored the whole traditional element thing,” he

admitted, noting that those tunes, however, did eventually find their way back into his heart. Albeit not in the fashion that folks might expect.

There even came a time when he was asked to play in a country band which introduced him to a whole new world of styles and sounds - including the relative timelessness of classic country.

“I really grew to love it. We would usually play for older folks, and I really enjoyed how much they would enjoy it. Then I came back around to more of the Celtic music.” So essentially, there was something of a convergence of genres once he met up with the guys in the band and they set their own artistic course. “It was all pretty organic,” he added of how they initially joined forces back in 2007.

He recalls an early show when the band was playing for a private party, and the party-goers formed a Conga line and wound up tossing $20 bills at the guys.

“We’re like, this is cool!” The band was pretty much born. “We didn’t think we’d last more than six months - bands are so transient. But here we are eight years later,” he said with a laugh.

Looking ahead, the guys will tour Canada till about the middle of October.

Next spring, they jet off to Europe for shows in Germany, the U.K. and Finland among others. It’s onstage that they truly feel at home. “We are a ‘live’ band that happens to record.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Determining what your workout personality is The answer to this question could help you stick with exercise.

Could the reason you give up on exercise so easily be because you just haven’t tried the right kind? Maybe the few times you’ve gone running it was so hard you swore you’d never do it again.

Perhaps you dread the monotony of the treadmill. Or maybe you have a social personality and feel out of your element exercising alone. Whatever the case, research shows that physical activity, like other parts of your lifestyle, is just another way you express your personality and preferences.

When you understand this theory, it makes sense why you love your Zumba class, love lifting weights, hate cardio and dislike hiking alone in the woods.

So you may be wondering what your workout personality is.

Fly solo versus social butterfly - this is kind of like the introvert/ extrovert question. Do you like spending time alone with your thoughts while you exercise or enjoy the company of a friend or team? If you’re around people all day at home or at work, you may like a few minutes to yourself while you work out. Or

maybe you like to move at your own pace and focus on the task at hand rather than get caught up in a conversation. For those who like to fly solo during their work out, good options include walking, weight lifting, running, swimming, or cycling.

Social butterflies find exercise more enjoyable when they have someone to talk to, keep them accountable, and cheer them on when they feel like quitting. This kind of exercise personality may prefer to walk or run with a buddy, play tennis, team sports, or take a class at the local gym.

Morning versus night person - forcing yourself to get out of bed before the sun to exercise when you’re not a usual morning person is setting yourself up for failure. Yes, you may discover you like the quiet morning hours

more than you thought, but it’s not likely. While the morning is an ideal time for many people to work out, it’s not for everyone.

If getting out of bed is already a challenge for you, then plan to exercise in the afternoon or evening. You’ll be much more likely to stick with it.

High strung versus laid back - consider your personality. Are you always on the go, looking for the next new adventure, and spontaneous? Then you may prefer an exercise routine that keeps you on the move like running to reach a goal, hiking to see what’s over the next hill, kickboxing, or an impromptu basketball game with friends.

This type of exercise personality does well with someone else to keep accountable.

Maybe your personality is

more laid back. Your life is slow paced, planned out, and you take time to reflect. Workouts that may appeal more to you include yoga, Pilates, or Tai chi. You’ll be more likely to stick with exercise if it’s a scheduled part of your everyday routine.

Leader versus follower - a forth aspect of your personality that may affect your exercise preferences is your propensity to lead or follow. Someone who’s used to calling the shots and making decisions may find fulfillment in leading others to exercise or doing his or her own thing. A follower likes to be told what to do and how to do it and will be more content to take a class or work out to an exercise video.

Wrong site, wrong procedure, wrong patient surgery Are you scheduled for surgery? If so, there are ways to circumvent horrendous surgical errors.

We’ve all heard stories about surgeons amputating the wrong leg. Or fixing a hernia on the side that didn’t need it. If you think this is past history, you had better think again as it happens every year in North America.

During a 10-year period in Canada, wrong-site surgery happened 106 times.

Each year, 6.3 cases involved a lower extremity and in 4.3 cases, an upper limb. The most common error was the use of ar-

But operating room nurses placed her on her left side exposing her to surgery on her right leg. It was only after the surgeon made the incision and found no fracture that he realized the error.

Reports from the U.S. show that wrong side or wrong person surgery happens once in every 100,000 cases. But if a patient is having an operation for a lazy eye, the risk of surgery being performed on the wrong eye is one in 10,000!

Dr. Philip Stahel, a researcher and surgeon at Denver Health Medical Center, remarked, “The surgical blunders reported are in all probability just the tip of the iceberg and mix-ups are likely higher.�

In fact, one patient died of lung complications when a doctor inserted a chest tube into the wrong lung.

All of these errors are tragic and some cata-

strophic. In another case, two patients had prostate biopsies. The result showed that one had cancer and the other did not.

But the biopsies got mixed up and the patient without the cancer had a radical prostatectomy performed, which is extensive surgery, and removal of an organ, for no reason. The other patient was still walking around unaware he had a malignancy.

The U.S. report showed that one-third of the mistakes lead to long-term negative consequences. In Canada, wrong site, wrong procedure and wrong patient surgery left 10% of patients with poor outcomes, depression or death. But all patients either required prolonged surgical time or additional surgery.

One would wonder how these errors can happen.

It is primarily a failure of common sense. In some instances the patient was anesthetized, the extrem-

ity prepared and draped before the patient was even seen by the surgeon.

In other situations the extremity that supposedly required surgery was marked by someone other than the operating surgeon. Or medical records and X-rays were not available in the operating room.

In effect, hospital policy was rarely followed, or not at all.

To help prevent this problem some hospitals have initiated a ‘timeout’ before the incision is made. This gives everyone a moment to reflect on whether all the I’s have been dotted and all the T’s crossed before proceeding.

But what can patients do to prevent wrong-site surgery and make errors as fool proof as possible.

Some surgeons initial the part of the body scheduled for surgery. But this is not always done. So if there’s no initial on your operative site before you’re wheeled

to the operating room, ask the surgeon to place his initial on the right extremity while you’re still awake.

Alexander Pope wrote over 300 years ago, “To err is human� so it may be a long time before there’s 100% protection against surgical errors. It can be so easy to err. For example, a plastic surgeon was about to operate on a patient’s fourth finger. But a colleague entered the operating room to ask a question about another patient.

This distraction resulted in the surgeon operating on the third finger!

I went Saskatoon berry picking at my brother Ed’s place near Rocky Mountain House. My sister-in-law, Colleen was so helpful she even helped us pick the berries. My mom has passed on a few years ago but she loved being there and helping out with pruning and production.

SPORTS Red Deer Rebels start season off strong

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Rebels got their Memorial Cup hosting season off to an explosive start this past weekend.

The Rebels swept the Edmonton Oil Kings in a two game home-and-home series, winning their season opener by a score of 4-1 in front of a crowd of 6,399 at the ENMAX Centrium last Saturday before heading north on the QEII Hwy. to spoil the Oil Kings’ home opener in a 3-2 overtime thriller, despite being without three of their top players due to ongoing NHL camps.

Saturday’s game got off to a shaky start when, just 40 seconds in, Brett Pollock of the Oil Kings intercepted a pass across the blue line and fired a shot past Rebels goaltender Rylan Toth to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The Oil Kings would outshoot the Rebels 10-5 in the first period.

“I don’t know if we really expected much more in the first,” said Rebels Head Coach Brent Sutter after the game. Sutter added that because the team had had only one practice together and one game with their lines, he expected them to take a little while to settle in.

But settle in they did, as that was the only goal the Rebels would give up that night.

“I think we were not nervous. I think we were just too ready. We’ve been thinking about it for the past five days and I think we just over thought about it,” said newcomer Ivan Nikolishin, who picked up an assist and earned himself the second star of the game.

Michael Spacek, who the Rebels acquired in the 2015 Import Draft, knotted the game up at the 6:57 mark of the first with his first of three goals on the weekend. Centreman Presten Kopeck picked up the assist on the goal.

The home team came flying out of the gates in the second, outshooting the Oil Kings 13-7.

The Rebels took the lead at 3:57 of the second frame thanks to Spacek’s second of the night, which he scored on the power play, with assists going to Nikolishin and veteran Adam Musil.

From that point onwards the Rebels were absolutely dominant, adding two more tallies thanks to goals from Grayson Pawlenchuck and Jeff de Witt. Goalie Rylan Toth was solid, stopping 23 out of the 24 shots he faced.

“I thought our work ethic, I thought our game as we went on we did a lot of things better and our details were better,” Sutter said.

The second game of the weekend was a much closer affair.

The Rebels came out with the same drive they showed in Saturday’s matchup, peppering Oil Kings’ starter Patrick Dea with 19 shots in the opening frame while allowing only four on their own goaltender.

Dea, however, was outstanding, turning aside every single puck he faced, including a late period penalty shot, to keep the score tied 0-0 after one.

It took the Rebels until the 3:59 mark of the second to finally solve Dea thanks to a goal by Red Deerian Colton Bobyk.

Nikolishin and Spacek picked up the assists.

The lead wouldn’t last long, however.

Edmonton responded just three minutes later with a goal from Lane Bauer to tie the game up at one going into the third, although the tie wouldn’t last long either.

Nine minutes after the start of the third period, Tyler Robertson fired a shot past Toth to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead.

The Rebels managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, though, thanks to some late-game heroics by none other than Spacek and Nikolishin. With just 29 seconds left in the game, Toth on the bench for an extra attacker and the Rebels on the power play, Bobyk fired a one-timer, which Dea turned aside. Spacek scooped up the rebound right in front and fired a quick pass over to Nikolishin, who made no mistake, wiring the puck over the stick of a sprawling Dea and into the wide open net to score his first goal as a Rebel and tying the game at two with no time to spare.

That set the stage for Spacek to become the overtime hero. Just 54 seconds into the extra frame, Spacek picked up the puck behind the net, and skated it up the ice with a two on one opportunity. Spacek skated over the blue line, looked to pass, then fired the puck past Dea to cement the victory with his fifth point in just two games.

The Rebels play two games this weekend.

First up, on Friday, the Swift Current Broncos will pay a visit to the ENMAX Centrium.

Exploring the NHL’s possible moves to Quebec City and Las Vegas On Tuesday, the groups that are bidding to bring NHL franchises to Quebec City and Las Vegas made presentations to an executive committee as part of the third and final stage of the NHL’s planned expansion.

The two cities were selected as finalists from a pool of 16 expansion applicants and I find that now is a good time to ask the question - why Las Vegas?

Quebec City makes sense. It’s a Canadian city with a long, rich history that is steeped in hockey culture. They’ve got an already-rabid fan base to build off of thanks to all of the people who were around when the Quebec Nordiques were still in the league. And there is a precedent for returning professional hockey to a city that used to have a team. When the Winnipeg Jets returned to the league in the 2011-2012 season the outpouring of support was instantaneous and over-

Las Vegas, on the other hand, is a different story all together.

The city has no previous affiliation with hockey beyond the modern era when, in 2009, the NHL moved their annual awards show, which was traditionally held at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, to Sin City. Since then the NHL has had what can only be described as a fixation on the city.

An NHL franchise in Vegas would be the first for any of the major sports leagues.

Think about that. The MLB, NFL and the

NBA have all stayed away from the bright lights of Sin City, and those are sports that have huge markets south of the border.

Hockey, on the other hand, is just starting to gain a foothold in the southern United States. Teams in States such as Arizona and Florida have struggled to build solid fan bases and to sell season tickets, and have struggled financially as a result. This has resulted in a smaller payroll for the team and therefore lack of success. Now the NHL has decided that the time is right to put another team in the middle of the desert where ice is the thing that keeps your rum and Coke cold and has never existed in great enough quantities to skate on.

The NHL seems ignorant to the fact that their principal market is still firmly set north of the 49th Parallel. When Jim Balsilie made a bid to buy and relocate

the (then) Phoenix Coyotes to his hometown of Hamilton, Ont. the NHL went to great lengths to block the transaction.

The major problem is that out of the 16 potential applicants, only Quebec and Vegas were willing to ante up the $10 million down payment required by the league to even submit an application.

Especially since $2 million of that is non-refundable.

Both cities have built or are in the process of building state-of-the-art arenas to host their prospective franchises. Both cities have had independent market evaluations done by the league and both cities have held season ticket drives to prove that there is interest in an NHL franchise.

The big question here is when Las Vegas’ team starts to struggle, and it will, will those people continue to support the team and buy tickets? My money says no. zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

VIPERS GO 0-1-1 TO START SEASON The Red Deer Vipers had a tough start to their Heritage Junior B Hockey League season, falling in back-to-back games. The Vipers kicked off their season, last Saturday, on the road against the Okotoks Bisons at the Murray Arena in Okotoks. Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Brett Hoppus, the Vipers just couldn’t contain the Bison’s power play, giving up two goals on five opportuni-

ties and eventually falling to the Bisons 5-2. Last Sunday it was back to the old Red Deer Arena for a matchup against the Three Hills Thrashers. The game was a see-saw affair that saw the Vipers fall behind 5-3 going into the third period. But they managed to battle back and tie the game at five to force a shootout. It took five shooters to break the deadlock but, unfortunately, the Vipers couldn’t pull off the comeback and fell to their Northern Division rivals in a 6-5 nail-biter. Exploring home options in a challenging economy The economy in Alberta is uncertain and people have gone into survival mode when it comes to living conditions. More and more folks are considering adding roommates and extra business income to their homes as they hunker down and try to weather this economical storm. My group of friends and I often joke about living communally on an acreage somewhere to help reduce the cost of living while we grow our own vegetables.

Fortunately, housing options are vast in our divine province and there are a greater number of builders constructing multi-family condominiums and duplexes which can considerably cut the cost of housing. Existing homes with legal or non-conforming basement suites are also available in our market which can offset the mortgage you carry on your home.

The benefit of purchasing a condo or duplex is always the cost savings. My shared neighbour has two little boys and when the indoor hockey gets started it can be loud but they are happy sounds and I truly don’t mind the occasional noises I hear from them playing.

Years ago I had purchased a sweet condo which was ideal for my price point and for commuting to work.

It started out well until the condo board was established! It is important to be involved with the condo board (especially if it is a new one) to keep abreast of what is

happening in the world you live in. New condo projects are going to be establishing budgets and rules and trust me, you want to be a part of those decisions!

The perks of an existing condominium project is often years of established boards and healthy reserve funds to fix things which can need repair. What starts out as a nominal monthly fee can quickly escalate in a new neighbourhood so be sure to do your homework and read the documents of any condominium you are considering buying.

If you are looking to reduce your monthly output and are personable then condominium options are definitely one you should consider purchasing.

Frozen pipes can cause more than a mess Plumbing issues are part of being a homeowner.

Over time you are bound to experience a problem with your drains, toilets, or showers. However, one potential plumbing issue that most Canadians don’t think about is the possibility of the pipes freezing during the winter.

Once the temperature outside goes below zero, be aware that the pipes could freeze. This could happen for a number of different reasons, however, it commonly occurs when the heat is turned

down when a homeowner is away for winter trips, or when someone neglects to shut off the water leading to external faucets.

“Don’t turn down your heat too much and make sure that you have either a remote system that monitors the temperature inside, or that you have a reliable person to inspect your home regularly when you are away,” said Wayne Ross, an insurance expert with Aviva Canada. “The pipes could freeze if the temperature inside your home drops or the furnace

stops working when you are away.”

Ross added, “If you open a tap and no water comes out, don’t take any chances and call a plumber right away.”

When water freezes it expands and this is a serious issue if it happens in your pipes. If a pipe bursts when you are at home, turn off your water at the main valve right away. Wait for a plumber to inspect to determine the damage, if any. If you do have water damage as a result of a burst pipe, call

your insurance company.

They will be able to assist you with your claim.

Tips for preventing pipes from freezing, include: • Get them inspected to ensure they are properly insulated.

• Get all seals checked.

Seal leaks can lead to cold air getting in and freezing the water.

• Turn off outside taps

and disconnect outdoor hoses as part of your fall chores.

• Install frost-free faucets (hose bibbs) for supplying water to the front and back yards. If installed correctly they can prevent pipes from freezing and also prevent water damage.

• Install water shut-off alarms to close the supply if a leak is detected.

TRAVEL Azamara Club Cruises – ‘you’ll love where we take you’ Azamara Club Cruises offers a spectacular, elegant yet, casual cruise with the most overnight stays than any other cruise line. Azamara Club Cruises are a division of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line family.

We experienced a beautiful 12-day Baltic Cruise departing from Stockholm, Sweden and disembarking in Southampton, England.

Our ports included Stockholm Sweden (an overnight stay), Helsinki Finland, St. Petersburg Russia (overnight stay), Tallin Estonia, Copenhagen, Denmark, Amsterdam, Netherlands (overnight stay), Brugge Belgium, and finally Southampton.

The sights we experienced were a once in a lifetime adventures, from historical 14th Century buildings and churches, museums, wonderful food, Belgium chocolate and you can’t forget the warm, friendly people we met in each country.

On our recent Azamara Club Baltic cruise aboard Azamara Quest, we docked in the heart of Copenhagen (beside the little mermaid statue). In Russia we were a five-minute walk to the Hermitage Museum. Azamara offers complimentary shuttles in most ports.

Azamara offers many dining options.

The main dining room with open seating, the buffet serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and a number of casual venues.

Leave your formal dinner attire at home, as the dress code is cruise casual. When dining in the main dining room you can choose to dine by yourself or join other cruisers, it is your choice. They offer two specialty restaurants - Aqualina which serves fine Italian cuisine, and PrimeC the exquisite steakhouse.

Azamara offers a White Night Dinner on their cruises, where the pool deck is transformed into a white elegant yet casual dining venue. Guests are encouraged to wear white for this special evening, but it is optional. The evening starts with a buffet where the choices are endless and continues with entertainment well into the night.

Tea is offered daily to guests and is delivered to your stateroom. The gym is well equipped and one should indulge with a massage in the spa.

Azamara offers a number of included amenities which makes the price very attractive, you can disembark with little or no account to settle. Gratuities are included, the mini fridge is stocked daily with selection of soda and water. The alcohol

The two specialty restaurants have a minimal charge unless you are booked into a suite category where it is complimentary. There is an additional charge for Internet packages.

The entertainment offered nightly is good. It is not the Broadway production on some of the larger ships but very enjoyable and entertaining. We were treated to excellent variety shows, a comedian and Celtic entertainment on our cruise.

Azamara offers a complimentary evening on select cruises which they call their ‘AzAmazing Evening’. For our AzAmazing

Evening we were shuttled to a beautiful 14th Century church in the neighbouring town of Monnickendam, Netherlands and treated to a beautiful organ concert.

Azamara also offers ‘Nights in Cool Places’ on selected voyages. This allows guests to experience a destination after hours. Imagine an after hours museum visit, a guided walk around landmarks and live performances. This is a perfect ending to a day filled with adventure.

Insider access allows you to visit venues on selected voyages such as a visit to a family villa, a Monastery, or have a culinary arts lesson in Italy. The list is endless.

Azamara’s ships size allow them to call at smaller, more offbeat ports and allows them to dock closer to the centre of most

cities. In many cases larger ships are required to dock in outlying ports.

Azamara Club Cruises cater to clients who are active and are looking for port intensive itineraries. Azamara does not repeat many of their itineraries and the cruises sell out quickly. A number of passengers I spoke with were first time cruisers, they all agreed it would not be their last cruise and Azamara would be their first choice. Azamara’s pricing is similar to other cruise lines that advertise lower prices but do not include the amenities.

We bid a sad farewell to the amazing crew and newfound friends after our amazing cruise with Azamara Club Cruises.
