A shipment of pine mushrooms heading out of the Williams Lake airport Monday destined for Asian markets was a high point for the First Nations people who pick them.

The Ulkatcho First Nation band of Anahim Lake is enjoying the benefits of an unexpected bumper crop.

“The price is pretty low but you can put food on your table,” band councillor Gertie Capoose said.

“The majority of our people pick. It’s our livelihood. That’s what we survive on in the fall.”

Mushroom picking is a quick season each year and because it was so dry in 2015, the community thought it was going

to be a poor year as it was in 2013 and 2014.

“But then for some reason it just popped like crazy and the mushrooms are coming out where they don’t normally do,” Capoose said.

“I totally believe so badly that our Creator did that.

“I tell people if you pray hard enough God always provides.”

With pine mushrooms going for $10 a pound, there’s an incentive even for children to pick, and people from neighbouring bands have been arriving to pick as well, she added.

The boon also comes at a time when the community is struggling.

“We have had so many deaths this year,” Capoose said, noting the last count

Mayor Cobb opposes environmental bill of rights Tom Fletcher Black Press

Over vocal objections from some representatives, local politicians narrowly endorsed a call for an “environmental bill of rights” for B.C. at their annual convention.

Calling it “an idea whose time has come,” Richmond Coun. Harold Steves

sponsored the motion Wednesday at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver. It calls for recognition of a right to “live in a healthy environment, including the right to clean air, clean water, clean food and vibrant ecosystems.”

Steves reminded delegates of a summer of smoke from forest fires and a drought

that saw his Cache Creek farm run out of water. He noted the bill of rights has been supported by 36 municipalities around B.C., after a tour of local councils by the David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot campaign.

The idea was quickly challenged.

“How is this resolution going to prevent forest fires and cre-

ate clean air?” North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring asked.

“It’s not.”

Williams Lake Mayor Walt Cobb dismissed the bill of rights movement as “David Suzuki propaganda” backed by urban people who don’t understand that mining and forestry provide the lumber, copper and other products that build their homes

and communities.

Mine drilling continues despite TNG opposition Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer

Amarc Resources Ltd. is continuing exploration work in Nemiah Valley despite opposition by the Tshilqot’in National Government.

The company’s vicepresident, Jason Quigley, said drilling will continue even though the TNG issued notice to Amarc last week to cease its “Ike” mineral exploration mining project operations for 2015 within the Dasiqox Tribal Park, Tsilhqot’in territory.

“We are doing some exploration work and have been for about a week now,” Quigley said.

“We expect to be there for another few weeks.”

The company has been in discussions and negotiations with the Tsilhqot’in since the middle of 2014, Quigley added.

“We’ve had community meetings, we’ve gone to Xeni

Gwet’in, we’ve gone to Yunesit’in, we shared draft exploration plans, we shared our draft permit applications and we’ve proposed a new way of doing business.”

However, Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William said when the TNG received a letter from the company a few weeks ago about its plans to proceed with the exploration work, the TNG made it clear they were not giving the company their consent.

“It is a no-go zone,” William said. “Right now we are in negotiations with the B.C. government and each community will be developing its own landuse plans.”

The exploration area is in the headwaters and source of the Dasiqox (Taseko River), which flows into the Chilko, Chilcotin, and Fraser River systems, William added.

“It is as sensitive as Fish Lake if not more.

We have spent 25 years fighting for Fish

Lake and we still don’t know if that fight is even over.”

Yunesit’in Chief Russell Myers Ross said the area is a prime location for grizzlies.

“For a mine to be developed, a road must eventually be carved through the mountain, disturbing the corridor for grizzly habitat — it’s too risky to try to situate a mine in this sensitive area.”

Meanwhile, Amarc confirmed it drilled nine holes in 2014 and plans to drill approximately nine more in 2015.

“It’s a very early stage project in an area above the tree line 50 kilometres from the title area,” Quigley said. “We are looking for copper, molybdenum and silver.”

Drill rigs, about the size of a pickup truck, have been flown in by helicopter to the site, he confirmed, adding the work is very environmentally responsible and everything

is reclaimed after the project is completed.

Drill holes are a few inches in diameter and several hundred metres deep.

William said if Amarc wants to be successful in gaining the consent of First Nations, they need to respect community processes and work with them in a way that suits not only the minimum requirements of the B.C. permitting process, but also their needs.

“At this moment in time, our people will turn down any mining practices in sensitive areas.”

Myers Ross went further saying Amarc ought to consider that from the First Nations’ perspective, the area is an impossible site for a full-scale open-pit mine.

“The company should be honest and stop wasting people’s time and money by pretending there is potential of a future mine,” Myers Ross said.

Questions raised “I have nothing to suggest the data has fallen into the wrong hands.”

That’s what Surrey MLA Amrik Virk, B.C.’s minister of technology, innovation and citizens’ services had to say to reporters this week after it was revealed the government lost an unencrypted back-up hard drive that contains the personal education information of 3.4 million people who attended school in B.C. between 1986 and 2009.

The minister, of course, is incorrect. The data clearly did end up in the wrong hands: Those of the Liberal government.

Only time will tell how this boo-boo of legendary proportions will affect people, and how many, if any, will become victims of identity theft and fraud as a result.

The government thinks that risk is low as the data did not contain banking information, social insurance numbers or drivers license numbers. But some records also contain personal education numbers, birth dates,

home addresses and information concerning “family problems.”

Jim Iker, president of the BC Teachers Federation, notes the lost data contains mental health information, exam marks, special education designations, foundation skills assessments results and very sensitive data on children in care. All this is now at risk.

This breach of security raises the question why the government is collecting all this data in the first place.

Iker rightly asks, “at what point do students get the right to be forgotten? Why is a 35-yearold today worried about her or his privacy being violated from student records collected 25 years ago?”

Iker noted the government wants to expand data collection and access to data through MyEducationBC. “We have huge concerns about that,” he said.

So do we.

Taking back violent nights and days a worthy cause I was not cognizant of domestic violence until I was in my 20s and working for an inner city university program in Winnipeg.

It was the 1980s and movies such as Tess of the D’Urbervilles and songs such as Suzanne Vega’s Luka were highlighting the problem but they seemed remote.

Then one day in the lunch room at work I was speaking with an adult student who started talking about her family.

I learned that growing up her life was pretty horrific.

nently altered because of years of beatings from her father.

She said she and her siblings were all victims of their father’s wrath. She was becoming a social worker and had been helping her siblings heal.

As the blinders came off I heard more and more stories

from women.

Some were fleeing boyfriends and husbands, often to be housed in shelters.

Others were going for counselling to come to terms with abuse they’d had as children.

One night a new friend phoned me in Winnipeg to let me know she had moved to another city in the dead of night.

She had been in an abusive relationship for two years until one night her boyfriend put his hands around her neck and was choking her.

She realized at that point it was time to exit the relationship before he killed her.

We still marvel that she drove 15 hours straight without stopping to buy gas. She thought she had been transported there on angels’ wings.

This Friday the annual Take Back the Night Walk takes place in Williams Lake. Statistics show the RCMP are receiving 50 per cent less reports of domestic violence compared to last year, but Women’s Contact Society executive director Irene Willsie said domestic violence counselling services are very busy.

Three decades later I find the fact we need a Take Back the Night Walk a sobering remind-

er that these things still go on.

Where some of us retreat to our homes to feel safe from what can be a harsh world at times, there are still many people who live in cruel homes.

Willsie said domestic violence is not acceptable and as a community it is something we should be working hard to stop.

In 2014, the Ending Violence Association of B.C. reported that 18 people died from domestic violence, including 12 women and a child.

That’s 18 deaths too many.

Do balanced budgets really matter?

The federal election campaign has produced a jumble of conflicting claims about whether or not Canada has a balanced budget or a deficit, how it was determined, and whether it even matters.

The definitive word on this came out last week, with the release of the Government of Canada Annual Financial Report, signed off by Auditor General Michael Ferguson.

“The government posted a budgetary surplus of $1.9 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, compared to a budgetary deficit of $5.2 billion in 201314,” the report says.

“Revenues increased by $10.7 billion, or 3.9 per cent, from 2013-14, reflecting increases across all major revenue streams.

Program expenses increased by $5.2 billion, reflecting increases in major transfers to persons and other levels of government, offset in part by a decrease in direct program expenses.”

The Conservative government’s pre-election budget calculated that last year was in deficit, and this year would be the first in the black since 2008. Ottawa pundits say this “surprise surplus” was engineered with intentionally pessimistic budget estimates, so Prime Minister Stephen Harper would get a boost right about now.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau claimed last year’s surplus was partly generated by cuts to Veterans’ Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs. Wrong and wrong. Veterans’ Affairs spending was up 13

per cent, and Aboriginal Affairs spending rose nearly 30 per cent.

Trudeau has also insisted Canada is in recession now, which helps his suddenly adopted position that a Liberal government would run deficits for the next three years to build infrastructure.

Harper ran the biggest deficits in Canadian history after the 2009 crash, bailing out auto makers and building lots of “shovel ready” infrastructure, as did the U.S. and other countries. The question raised by Trudeau’s plan is whether it’s a good idea to keep doing that without a financial crisis.

France, for example, has run operating deficits every year since the early 1970s, although the current Socialist government vows to balance the books by 2017.

France’s operating debt is now equal to 91 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product.

Canada’s net debt-to-GDP ratio is currently around 30 per cent, down from frightening levels in the 1990s before the Chré-

tien government finally balanced the budget.

(Fun fact: then-finance minister Paul Martin not only cut transfers to provinces, unlike the current government, he inflicted the largest-ever cuts to the CBC. Harper’s CBC cuts were part of government-wide reductions, again due to that 2009 crisis.)

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has promised to balance the budget every year of his mandate, should he form Canada’s firstever socialist government. He will spend the rest of the campaign trying to reconcile this promise with the grandiose spending plans he has piled up.

Meanwhile in B.C., Finance Minister Mike de Jong may have benefited from Harper’s lowball budget. In his first quarter update last week, de Jong reported that his February budget forecast is on track, with a $277 million surplus.

This is despite a $300 million bill for forest firefighting, thanks to personal and corporate income tax revenue expected to be $374 million higher than budgeted.

B.C. bases its tax revenue figures on federal estimates, and the ones they got early this year were clearly low.

Understated or not, this is a nice problem to have. De Jong says that at the current pace, B.C. will pay off its accumulated operating debt by 2020.

The last time the province was free of operating debt was 1982.

The big debt peak came during the NDP 1990s, with another spike from 2009 to 2013 under the

B.C. Liberals.

Wealth of ranching knowledge ripe for the taking We have been ranching for the past 40 years.

I took time out, a good decade to serve the public full time. No regrets there. While I am still an active citizen, I am volunteering less.

That is because younger others with more energy need to be encouraged to step up to the plate to take their turn.

I really think we should try what they do in Chiapas, Mexico where public service or community leadership is rotated among the adult citizens.

One of my take away messages from my time in intense public service is: You try to fix the problems, but it ain’t so easy if you have to deal with those whose ox is gored by some change.

Elected leadership can help or hinder but they need abiding support from those who want change.

And when change comes, those benefitting must be there to make

it happen and deal with probable unintended consequences.

Back to ranching which is my focus these days. Well into two generations after our start (we lived in a tent and had to boat in at first) at our place, we are still building.

This is mainly because it takes time to steward the land in a way that deals with the consequences of the developments. For exam-

ple, if you clear land for crops the soil needs to adapt to not having a forest cover and you need to nurture the microbes that collect 95 per cent of the inputs from the air: carbon, oxygen, nitrogen.

Soil fertility starts right there with the billions of critters that live in the soil.

This isn’t easy when we don’t understand much about their nature. At least I don’t, and I am sure that very few people working in agriculture know. Without soil we have no sustainable base to our food production.

The record of civilization after civilization is to overuse the fertility provided by nature, and then move on to exploit other fresh soil. This is the long view, but the necessary view we have to take.

So what gets me up in the morning is learning about how soil processes and what grows on it (including animals) contribute to greater soil health.

We believe if our grandchildren can eat healthy (mostly) local food they will be healthier and if they are involved they will respect the productivity of the land for generations to come.

I have been working with others in our industry on how to do our jobs better as farmers: more sustainable methods, and more productive and profitable enterprises. There is a lot of traditional knowledge out there amongst the elders in our business and we need to pass that knowledge on to the next generation of farmers and ranchers.

Of course there is also much new knowledge that should be brought to bear on old farming practices to make them viable for the long run.

Our ranching organization has started working with Thompson Rivers University to bring practitioners and researchers together and make it possible for local

young people to speed up the learning process and to skill up for the challenges ahead as they seek to build and take over ranching/farming businesses and operations. It feels right to be doing this especially since the United Nations has chosen this the Year of the Soil.

“These signs are symbols of the fact we are working with the government on our title lands,” said Xeni Gwet’in (Nemiah) Chief Roger William.

“As I look at the river below I’m reminded of myself as a child on the banks of rivers in the Chilcotin. Our children and future generations will now see these signs in our

own language. That’s exciting.”

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI), working with the Tsilhqot’in National Government,

has created 29 new mileage signs.

It is anticipated the rest of the signs will be going up during the next several weeks, said MOTI area manager Leeah Tappert.

Barbecued fruit a sweet, tasty snack I like the warm fall weather we are now enjoying.

I just picked a nice big fat strawberry from my garden and we have harvested the most tastiest crab apples, some of it will make nice jelly.

This time of the year is great for fruit and of course it is barbecue season as well.

So we can do the fruit on the barbecue, right?

A lot of people have never tried cooking fruit on the barbecue.

For me, I like the taste of fruit done on the barby.

Most fruit does not take long to cook on the barbecue, so it is worthwhile to keep a close eye on your cooking time. Overcooking can make fruit mushy.

Almost any firm fleshed fruit can be cooked on the barbecue, however, it is important to cut it into similar sized pieces,

especially if you are doing fruit kebabs. Barbecue fruit.

Although desserts aren’t often considered a priority, or even a necessity at a barbecue, fruits are often a good choice because they’re fun to cook and, usually, totally unexpected.

Children love barbecued fruit, especially with ice cream, and adults who have never tried it will be more than impressed.

Many grilled fruit recipes can be prepared well in advance and once the main cooking is done, they can be left to slowly cook. Almost any fruit can be grilled;

firm fleshed fruits can be skewered and served in the form of kebabs, softer fruits can be loosely wrapped in tin foil and cooked as little citrus parcels, thick skinned fruit such as bananas can be cooked directly on the grill in their own protective skin!

Barbecued Fruit Kebabs • 3 nectarines, quartered and stoned • 3 bananas, peeled and thickly sliced • 6 red plums, halved and stoned • 12 large strawberries • 3 kiwi fruit, quartered • 2 mangoes, peeled,

halved and stoned, then cut into chunks • 6 tbsp of Cointreau Ameretto ( I think you can get small bottles in the liquor store) • 2 tbsp of clear honey Put all fruits into a bowl and then mix the honey with the booze until well blended.

Pour the mixture over the fruit and toss, so the fruit is coated. .Cover with Saran wrap and put in fridge for about an hour.

Thread a section of the fruit pieces onto a wooden skewer that has been soaked for at least one-half an hour. Cook the kebabs

over medium heat for about five minutes until lightly caramelized.

Brush the kebabs with the marinade while cooking. You can serve this with a little ice cream. What a treat.

Hope you are enjoying the summer-like fall, now that it’s here.

The only thing that bugs me now is the sunrise and sunset are both at about 7 oclock....getting too close to winter (brrr).

I am a Grade 12 student at Maranatha Christian School.

For years now, our school’s science room has been just that, a science room.

However, all that has recently been changing because of the work of one of our teachers.

Over the summer, Maranatha was able to renovate our science room so it is now a real, functional lab, with lab tables and stools rather than desks and chairs.

It is so wonderful to have a workspace like

this, and it really opens up the options for what we can do during science classes.

Mrs. Pamela Skinner made all of this happen by participating in the Shell Science Lab Competition, a program of the National Science Teachers Association.

For the competition she shared about how she approaches science with such a limited laboratory facility. She won for our competition district which is all of Canada.

Then she competed against the winners from 18 other districts across North America,

and won a place among the top five national finalists.

As a result, Mrs. Skinner won the honour of being a NSTA/ Shell Science Lab Challenge National Finalist.

This included a school banner and trophy plus $3,000 in donated science lab equipment, materials, and gift certificates from Ward’s Science.

It also included a $3,000 Shell Science Lab grant to buy lab equipment and science education books.

An expense-paid trip to Chicago for the 2015 NSTA National Con-

ference on Science Education is also among the prizes. Good job Mrs. Skinner!

We, the students of Maranatha, truly appreciate all the work Mrs. Skinner went through to improve our educational experience.

Of course having a good lab makes her job easier, but it also makes classes such as chemistry a lot more enjoyable and exciting.

Thank you to Mrs. Skinner for all of your work, and to the Shell Science Lab Challenge for the resources to provide our school with a real laboratory!

Marie Sharpe welcomes nature-based Kindergarten Marie Sharpe Elementary School Principal Calvin Dubray is happy to hear the news that his school has been chosen for the district’s new nature-based Kindergarten program.

“It’s nice to see our school grow and I feel it’s due to the hard work of this staff, the programs we have in place and the many opportunities our students get

to experience,” Dubray says. “It’s a ‘big’ school with that ‘small community’ feel to it.”

He says the naturebased Kindergarten program will be another positive addition to the school’s programs.

Marie Sharpe has a Big Brothers and Sisters mentoring program; a Breakfast Club of Canada program; a Zones of Regulation program

that teaches students self-regulation and social-emotional awareness.

The school also has the Families and Schools Together program. Through this program parents are invited to spend time with their children and teachers together doing activities, sharing a meal together and getting to know each other on a different

level. The school also has a new project called Families as Learning Leaders which is initiated through CaribooChilcotin Partners for Literacy.

He said Marie Sharpe enrolment has increased by 40 students, from 122 students last year to 162 students this year.

He said about half or 18 of the students who came to Marie Sharpe

after Wildwood School was closed last spring have stayed on at the school.

“Also, our school has grown into a multicultural ‘melting pot’ with students from as far away as Nigeria and China to our local First Nations families,” Dubray says. “It is a nice mix of cultural learning and understanding for all of our students.”

This year Jason brought along his twoyear-old golden lab retriever Tikka, she was duck hunting for the first time.

By all reports, Tikka did an excellent job retrieving ducks from the lake and the ground.

The group also used opening day as an opportunity to add Dennis Anderson's name to a hunters' memorial sign dedicated to hunters that have participated in opening day with the group over the years but have now passed on.

Dennis started hunting with the group 40 years ago. He passed away on July 24, 2015.

First buck a memorable experience

After bagging a prized four-point buck that any man would be proud of, 12-year-old Aidan Herrling says shooting his first buck last week was thrilling.

"I had to be really quiet," Aidan recalls of stalking the animal to within 30 yards before shooting it.

"It was quite intense."

his dad Dave since he was five, Aidan has previously honed his hunting skills with grouse and, last year, a doe deer.

Last weekend, in between his busy soccer and hockey seasons, Aidan and his dad headed out for an evening hunt to a private property surrounded by hay fields in which they had permission to

hunt.

Aidan said he and his dad sat under a tree and watched for some time as a doe and fawn walked within ten feet of them before noticing where the bucks were by the swaying of the trees as the bucks rubbed them with their antlers.

"That's how we knew where they were," he said.

Aidan said he loves hunting because he enjoys being outdoors and also likes to provide meat for himself and his family.

"I like being outside, watching the animals." he said.

The 12-year-old said he still has a tag for a doe deer which he hopes to fill and plans to spend some more time grouse hunting.

By staying put lost hunter made the right choice Search and rescue volunteers are applauding a hunter who stayed put when he became lost east of Likely on Sept. 21.

"He did the right thing," said James Seeley, rescue manager with South Cariboo Search and Rescue (SCSAR) who were called in to aid Central Cariboo Search and

Rescue (CCSAR). "He hunkered down and waited for daylight.

And his hunting party did the right thing by calling it in."

After spending a night in the woods, the 74-year-old Lower Mainland man was found the next morning walking up a deadend road near Spanish Lake.

"He was in good condition, cold and hungry, and happy to be found," Seeley said.

Seeley said they learned the hunter was dropped off at about 7 a.m. in the morning with plans to walk up a road about two to three kilometres and then return to be picked up at noon.

He never showed up

at noon and the other two hunters were concerned.

"What actually happened was he walked up the road onto a ridge in a cut block to scope for moose," Seeley said. "He lost his way and took a wrong turn coming back."

The hunter was located about five kilometres away from the

command centre established by search and rescue.

"He had gone down the mountainside toward Spanish Lake and we had not searched that area yet because it was not the area he supposedly headed to," Seeley said.

The hunter recounted to rescue crews that as he waited through

the night he saw lights from logging trucks on the 1300 Road so once it was daylight he started walking in that direction and was found at 10:30 a.m.

Search manager Grant MacPherson said after the RCMP called CCSAR in to aid locating the hunter, 11 members were deployed and he called in

SCAR for mutual aid.

"It was already dark when we arrived," MacPherson said.

A command centre was established and members began travelling on quads with lights through areas the hunter may have gone.

At 1 a.m. Seeley took over the management of the search.

It is at this time that the various rituals of the rut – from velvet shedding to the act itself - leave behind their telltale signs.

And for hunters who understand what to look for and why, the advantage is theirs when it comes to finding that coveted bull.

1. Velvet shedding Think of this as the official kickoff to the rut. By late August, a bull's antlers become hardened bone, having completed their remarkable annual growth cycle. The velvet tissue that covered and nurtured the antlers as they grew has now dried tight to the rack and is no longer functional. It's time for it to come off. Velvet shedding is usually quick, with even the biggest bulls stripping their racks within a day or two by rubbing and thrashing them on shrubs and ever-

green saplings. Once the velvet is gone, the rut is poised to begin.

2. Thrashing During the pre-rut period – after velvet shedding and before the cows go into heat bulls roam their home ranges, thrashing or rubbing saplings and shrubbery along the way. At this point, the sound of their paddle-shaped antlers

beating against vegetation is thought to signal the bull's dominance to other males, as well as serve to attract females.

Similar to whitetailed deer urinating in their scrapes, moose deposit their personal scent onto their rubs as an invitation to females that happen to wander past. The smell of an appealing bull may cause a cow to stay in the area and start calling for his attention.

By using a shed antler, you can easily imitate a rut-charged bull moose that's thrashing a sapling. This type of calling works best during the prerut period and during the early stages of the rut when bulls are searching for cows.

Start by finding an opening or clearing that a bull has recently visited. Search for fresh tracks or, better

yet, keep an eye out for wallow pits and fresh rubs on evergreen saplings (look for trees that are approximately six feet tall, with trunk diameters between one and three inches). A rubbed tree is easily identified: most of the branches will be broken off or bent down, and much of the bark will be gone from about four feet down to roughly a foot off the ground.

Once you've located some fresh sign, try rubbing a similar, or even the same, sapling with your antler shed.

The sound should be irresistible to any bull within earshot that isn't already preoccupied with a cow.

leading up to the rut. This allows each bull to assess its own strength, stamina, antler size and, therefore, ranking of dominance with respect to the other bulls sharing his range. This familiarity with competing males serves to prevent life-threatening fights during the peak of the rut.

A bull moose will make obvious gestures to an opponent before a sparring match. He will sway his head from side to side, clearly displaying his massive antlers, while walking stiffly and slowly toward his opponent in an attempt to intimidate. This gesturing will continue for a minute or two, giving each bull ample time to determine whether he's confident enough to match his strength and skill against his opponent's.

To spar, two bulls will approach one another slowly and, with some care, place their antlers together.

Once bone-on-bone contact is made, the shoving begins. One step at a time, each bull will push strategically with brute determination. After about a minute, they'll lift their heads, pause and then continue - and so on - until one of the bulls turns away and ends the bout.

Again, sparring allows bulls to learn about their own physical abilities and limitations, and how to react to one another if they cross paths during the peak of the rut. If one bull was clearly the superior during the shoving match, the lesser bull will always back down if they have a confrontation over a female in the weeks ahead. If they were closely matched in their sparring bouts, however, neither animal will likely back down and an impressive fight will ensue.

Similar to the calling technique used to mimic rubbing or thrashing, it's also possible to reproduce the sound of two feisty bulls sparring.

By taking two antlers and pushing and rubbing them together, you can make it sound like two bulls are jousting for dominance.

4. Fighting How to describe the image of two mature bulls fighting? Incredibly impressive raw power. With as much as 1,500 pounds of infuriated beast on either side, two combating bull moose make for one of the most awesome displays of strength in nature.

Most fights start with each bull stiffly gesturing to his opponent. With a threatening stare, ears laid back and the hair on his back standing on end, each bull will approach the other at a slow, quartering walk while tipping his antlers from side to side.

This is an attempt to intimidate and scare off the other bull, all the while allowing enough time to size up his challenger.

If neither animal backs down and their antlers smash together, each bull becomes enraged in battle. Injury is common; sometimes antlers are broken and hides are cut open.

In rare instances, the antlers can become locked, dooming both animals to starvation or the mercy of predators. Fights between breeding bulls are usually brief and intense, with the victor chasing the fleeing loser for a short distance.

Tip: Finding two mature bull moose fighting, or about to

fight, is a rare occurrence; consider yourself lucky to witness this ancient test of dominance. What happens next depends on whether you're holding a bull tag.

5. Tending There are essentially four subspecies of moose in Canada, and the members of the largest group (northern Canada's Alces gigas) behave quite differently from the other three subspecies during tending time.

Ducks have two basic feeding behaviours - dabbling or diving. Once you know the difference, it's easy to tell which is which.

Dabblers are buoyant, legs more centrally placed, feed on the surface or just below, can take flight off water almost vertically.

Bulls inhabiting this northernmost moose habitat grow larger, wider and whiter antlers than their somewhat smaller relatives to the south and east.

Those with the widest (up to 77 inches), most reflective racks catch the eyes of the most cows at a greater distance. This allows most fit bulls to have a collective, or harem, of up to a dozen or so cows in close company, all vying for his attention. In fact, if more than one of those cows come into heat at the same time, they'll stand on their hind legs and fight each other with their front hooves. The winner gets first dibs on the bull.

With all other moose in Canada, though, the bull will track through the woods – with his narrower, more manoeuvrable rack – and search out an individual cow in estrus. The pair will mate several times before the cow's heat has finished and the bull heads off looking for another receptive female. (This pairing approach is the same with most other members of the deer family, except for elk, which have true harems.)

days that the cow is in heat, the tending bull will stay very close to her and chase off all other males. If an even bigger bull shows up, the tending bull will either head for the hills or remain and fight.

Hunting the tending time can be challenging. Calling isn't likely to work with mature bulls, as they're probably already with a cow in heat. And if you're hunting in an area that may have other hunters, it's not a good idea to stalk in after a call you heard-it just might be coming from one of those other hunters. In such cases your best bet is to set up your watch and start calling in a location with active moose sign. Any lone bulls in the area

6. Mating Moose lovin'. The experience of my first sighting of the act itself - a 1,500-pound bull mounting a cow just 20 yards in front of me - will stick with me for the rest of my days. And this when it was so shockingly brief. Unlike dogs or wolves, where a male can sometimes tie to a female for up to half an hour, with moose it's up and down.

There are no acrobatics or neck nibbling, but the job gets done.

If you have the rare opportunity to observe moose mating, sit back and be a silent spectator. Few people have seen such wonders in wild places.

of all, the colours are so brilliant and beautiful and warm. It seems to be such a peaceful time of the year as everything is getting ready for winter. We still have time to enjoy some warm days with cooler evenings. I hope you will enjoy the rest of fall as much as me!

This past month there have been lots of activities in Horsefly. The children are settling back into the routine of school.

We had an amazing traditional pow wow on September 12th and 13th, fun was had by all that visited and participated!

We are having our Salmon Festival this weekend September 26th and 27th. This years Horsefly River Salmon Festival is a collaborative event hosted by the Horsefly River Roundtable with support from Fraser Basin Council, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

The festival takes place across the bridge in downtown Horsefly on the T’exelc (Williams Lake Indian Band) and Xatsull (Soda Creek/ Deep Creek Band) traditional territory.

This free to all ages celebration will take place from 10am until 4pm on both days. Activities include, kids crafts with Maureen Chappell’s creative hands, painting a salmon for the stream of dreams project, Gyotaku (Japanese fish printing), DFO Salmon education booth and demonstrations, salmon dissection, Bannock from Cody William, Scout Islands Kids interactive activities, and games about river invertebrates, and on Saturday only, Horsefly River riparian trail interpretive walks. Mount Polley representatives will also be participating to provide information on the Hazeltine rehabilitation work undertaken since the tailings dam breach a year ago.

Donna Milner launches new book at Discovery Centre Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Cariboo author Donna Milner is hoping the launch of her latest book, A Place Called Sorry, will be a community event.

“This town has been so great in supporting my books and I want this party to be like an old fashioned coffee house atmosphere where people feel they can join in,” Milner said.

She invites everyone to the launch taking place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Tourism Discovery Centre.

“We are going to

have an open mic where people can sing and read some poetry or prose.”

Describing A Place Called Sorry as a family story, Milner said it intersects two eras.

It is hard to pinpoint what inspires her to write her books, she chuckled.

“You don’t even know. You just sit down, you have a character and you follow him or her and they take you somewhere. That’s basically what happened with this one.”

She worked on the book for at least two years she said, noting it is historical fiction involving an event in B.C.’s history.

Milner will share the limelight at the launch with her son, Aaron Cully Drake, who will read from

his literary debut, Do You Think This is Strange?

The story follows the journey of Freddy, an autistic teenager.

When Freddy was seven years old his mother walked him to the train, sat him on a bench, kissed his forehead and disappeared from his life.

Ten years later Freddy is struggling to get through his last year of high school.

Drake has written for newspapers and magazines and is a former reporter and editor.

He lives in Vancouver with his wife, son, and autistic daughter.

Auditions next week for Making God Laugh The Williams Lake Studio Theatre is holding open auditions on Oct. 4 and 5 for the play Making God Laugh by Sean Grennan and directed

by Chris Armstrong.

Auditions will take place at the Central

Fall leaf litter collection returns The Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society’s Leaf Litter Pick Up Project is back.

With fall colours beginning to show, Brianna van de Wijngaard says it’s time for the Waste Wise program’s third year of free leaf litter pick up to begin once again.

“In 2014, we collected 137 bags of leaf litter, up almost 20 per cent from 2013,” says van de Wijngaard, the

program co-ordinator.

She says this valuable resource is donated to the Potato House Society’s composting program at the corner of First Avenue and Borland Street, to the Williams Lake Food Policy Council’s community garden project on Carson Drive, as well as to other local farm and garden locations.

She says people can drop off their clean

leaf litter at the Potato House location or at the Memory Garden on Carson Drive next to the community garden compost bins.

The leaf litter and lawn clippings donated should not be from roads or parking lots and should not contain chemical sprays.

The litter must be pre-bagged.

Rainfall during the day created a perfect storm of carnage for the annual hit to pass as Gordon Bettles repeated as champion for the second straight year, edging his father, Brian Bettles, to claim the title.

Third place went to a newcomer to the scene, Ken Waslen of Hanceville.

TMS treasurer Lynn Dunford said the hands down crowd pleaser was Quesnel’s Jason Howlett.

“Drivers then had the opportunity to spin the motorhome, driven

by Marius Dunford, to earn an extra $100 prize,” she said.

Two boats and two trailers were pulled behind cars in the main event, and while the rainfall continued, destruction followed in its path, before the sun peaked out just in time for the final car to cross the finish line.

During the smoke show competition the hit to pass car of Howlett’s slightly beat out a truck driven by Cody Swan and co-piloted by Sydney Pye. “Darren Pye [was a] longtime racer at TMS but passed away a few years ago,” Lynn said.

“Guarantee papa was proud of Sydney and Cody for this great tribute.”

On Saturday, the season’s Points Championship Race took place, however, results will be released during the TMS Awards Banquet on Oct. 24.

Third annual ranch rodeo showcases skills Linda-Lou Howarth

Special to Tribune/Advisor Ten ranch rodeo teams entered the ranch challenge during the Williams Lake Harvest Fair to vie for the title of top ranch rodeo team.

Each team consisted of three riders from various ranches throughout the province.

Events included team doctoring where a calf is roped, headed and heeled, before the third rider jumps off his or her horse, throws it down, removes the head rope and applies it to the front feet and ‘doctors’ the animal.

Next, they run to the head and then run back to the horse and climb back on before a time is scored.

Team sorting consists of the riders sorting out numbered cows that are called out to them as they cross the line. They then must sort out cows by the proper number and herd them across the line.

If a wrong cow crosses the line during the sorting the team is disqualified.

Next, the teams are to rope a cow and herd it across the line and into the stock trailer at the end of the arena.

Team branding has a rider rope two different calves by the head while the other rider heels it.

The third member, who is on foot, grabs a brand and races to the calf and does the branding.

Pairing out consists of the three riders entering the arena.

Two numbers are called out as the team rides to the end of the arena where the cows are, and proceeds to pair out two cow/calf pairs across the line.

All of these events represent every day skills the cowboys use in ranch work, in a

corral or on the range.

Horsemanship skills and cattle sense will help in having a smooth run every time.

Miles Kingdon judged the events, with Bryan Poffenroth announcing throughout the two-day event Sept.

12-13 at the Trail Riders Arena. Brandy Grier and Connie Redl were the timers.

With apparent disregard for the conditions, 69 participants in the 7 Summits Challenge persevered over the peaks as if it was a typical day in the Cariboo.

The event starts on the streets of Barkerville Historic Town in the North Cariboo Mountains, near Quesnel.

Participants finally end their day, as much as 12 self-propelled hours later, in the picturesque town of Wells, to celebrate their accomplishment. Between Barkerville and Wells they have hiked and cycled on seven mountains, in seven stages and accumulated 7,000 feet in elevation gain.

This mountain event is widely heralded as an achievable but epic adventure, and receives popular support throughout the province.

It’s goal is to get people into the mountains, challenge their abilities, raise awareness about our fragile alpine environment and raise money to support the Friends of Barkerville, who have been instrumental in preserving and protecting many of the trails used.

Quesnel and Prince George dominated the registrations this year and Tom Skinner of Prince George achieved the fastest time of five hours and 37 minutes.

He was followed closely by former Quesnel resident, Matt Hewitt, now of Vernon, and Mark Isaacs of

Williams Lake’s Ivor McMahen was the top local finisher in the Seven Summits Bike and Hike Challenge.

In the women’s division Bonnie Hooge and Kristen Erickson, both of Prince George, placed first and second with Williams Lake’s Ann Carter posting third in eight hours, 24 minutes and 27 seconds.

The 7 Summits celebrates participation above all else, and so the grand prize goes to the person who best exemplifies the spirit of the event, which is to enjoy a long and fruitful experience in the mountains.

They are immortalized on the only annual trophy, awarded to the “Most Average Time.”

This year this prize is awarded to Bridget Nowakowski, of Quesnel, for her time of nine hours and 24 minutes.

But it’s not the event, it’s the mountains that really provide the magic.

This year it was the weather that defined how fickle a fall day in the Cariboo can be. The high winds at alpine really tested the mettle of the participants, but the cheerful faces and high degree of satisfaction show that the accomplishment was its own reward.

The Seven Summits Bike and Hike Challenge was created at the Bear’s Paw Café in Wells, and is sponsored by a variety of local businesses, and supported by a cadre of dedicated volunteers.

The entry fee includes a hot lunch, prizes, unique pottery partici-

pant awards and more.

This event is the recipient of an ‘Environmental Stewardship Award’ from the Wilderness Tourism Association.

All the profits from entry fees go to support the Friends of Barkerville and the Cariboo Goldfields, whose hard work has helped to preserve the many historic trails on which we are privileged to travel.

Cross country ski club seeking new volunteers for season Following the loss of several executive members this season, the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club is looking for new volunteers to step up

to fill vacant positions.

“We are really hoping that some new faces step up,” said WLCCSC communications manager Kirsty Gartshore. “Every

little thing people can help with makes our ski area the place that it is.”

The following is a list of needs and positions the WLCCSC is looking to

fill this season: • Two to three directors at large to help with decision making and miscellaneous tasks • Assistant coaches to

help on Sundays between 1 and 3 p.m. and Wednesday evening for up to 16 weeks from December through to the middle of March

FACILITATOR, WILLIAMS LAKE Families as Learning Leaders JOB POSTING Background Families as Learning Leaders is a collaborative project of Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL), Cariboo Friendship Society, and School District 27, and has broad based community support. The goal of the project is to increase vulnerable parents/caregivers involvement and participation in their children’s life learning and education. The facilitator will work with Little Moccasins Learning Centre in Williams Lake, and two elementary schools (Marie Sharpe and Nesika) to design and deliver a new model for engaging vulnerable families in their child’s learning. The Facilitator will help create and support the work of a project team comprising parents and practitioners. The project is funded by the Community Action Initiative, and the work is guided by a Collaborative Leadership Team.

The Facilitator is contracted by CCPL and reports to the Project Manager. This is a new position, 15-20 hours a week.

• Safe and efficient day to day operations of the mill during 12 hour shifts.

• Assists the process technicians in maintaining board quality from the stranders the finishing end.

• Reviews all finished products in the warehouse and ensures it is up to company standards.

• Maintains full communication with the mill at all times through radio and log books.

• Keeps accurate records of time books, log books, production reports, down-time and equipment breakdown. Makes necessary reports in a timely manner.

• Ensures all team members are aware of the location of fire equipment and is familiar with the proper fire fighting procedures to fight various types of fires.

• Ensures all new employees are trained in the safe operation of plant equipment based on company standards.

• Responsible for ensuring that company and WCB rules and guidelines are adhered to, and provides direction and discipline if required.

As the ideal candidate, you have a minimum of 5 years of recent work experience in the forest industry, preferably within an oriented strand board mill. Advanced communication skills (both verbal and written) are a requirement. A dedication to a professional team environment with an emphasis on safety is essential.
