At 6 a.m., Acacia SpencerHills is out and about, walking through the forest near Pedder Bay Marina in Metchosin. She’s among a group of volunteers checking 15 nets every half hour set up in the area to catch birds. With each check, SpencerHills never knows what she’ll find. “It’s kind of exciting. Every time you go it’s different. Sometimes you’ll walk up to a net and there’s seven birds in it,” said the 28-year-old. “It’s like opening a present almost. You get to see a lot of different birds.” For the last 26 years, the Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) – made up of several volunteers from Victoria – has been capturing and banding birds to track their migrations and learn more about various species. Two monitoring sites in the Pedder Bay area cover an area of about nine square kilometres. The locations have allowed RPBO to monitor more than 60 different species of birds. The banders catch approximately 3,000 birds at each station every year. The next few weeks are expected to be the busiest as birds get ready to head south for the winter. “It’s basically a pre cursor to any sort of study that you want to do,” said Spencer-Hills. “It’s interesting to see the variations in individual birds. You’ll get two fox sparrows, but their face will look different or they’ll have a different eye colour. It’s pretty fascinating.” Once the birds are carefully removed from the net, they are taken to one of the two central banding stations where their age, sex, species, wing length and fat deposits are recorded. The RPBO is made up of several volunteers from Victoria that capture and and band birds to track their migrations and learn more about various species. never knows what she’ll find when she reaches into a cloth bag with a bird inside. “I like to guess, based on the size,” she says, as she pulls out an orangecrowned warbler. Lying still on its back, Clarke-Coates places a tiny band on the bird’s leg and measures the size of its wing. “The warblers are very calm. They don’t struggle. It’s nice,” she says. Once banded, the group tries to capture the bird again to determine how well it’s doing since its previous capture. The data is shared with conservation organizations, students and

researchers. One of the most interesting things for Rick Schortinghuis is learning how long the birds live. On one occasion, a rufous hummingbird was captured eight years after it was banded. “That’s very exciting,” said Schortinghuis. “They go back and forth to Mexico every winter so it comes back to the same house it was banded at.” In order to find out where some birds breed, RPBO conducted a study two years ago with fox sparrows, placing 30 geo locators the size of a nickel in a little backpack over

the bird’s wings to measure longitude. The group recaptured 10 of those birds and found they were breeding in western Alaska. In a regular season, RPBO typically sees three to four species that are rare for the region, such as the grey cheeked thrush found last year – the first the group has ever recorded. This year the group caught a magnolia warbler that managed to fly over the Rocky Mountains even though they weigh 11 to 12 grams. “Having them in your hand is much more interesting than seeing them in the field. I found

that saying – a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush is completely true,” said Spencer-Hills. “You see things with them that you’d never see perching in a tree.” The passerine migration monitoring and banding takes place until Oct. 15. The banding of northern saw-whet owls runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31. Last season, more than 1,110 owls were banded. RPBO is volunteer run and almost entirely volunteer staffed. Helping sex workers no easy task It’s hard not to judge someone when they’re standing on a street corner at night, selling their body for sex. But many of the people involved in the sex trade industry harbour deep wounds that have never healed. Throughout the years working as a journalist, I’ve written a handful of stories about the lives of sex trade workers. Many of them were tossed around by their family as a sex toy before they could even speak. With nowhere to go, they eventually ended up living on the streets, using drugs to block the endless memories of sexual abuse and turning tricks to survive. Their stories are some of the saddest I’ve ever written. When I heard about a local grassroots organization trying to make a difference in the lives of sex trade workers, I couldn’t help but take note. PEERS Victoria Research Society has launched an online fundraising campaign to raise $25,000 to purchase a RV or camper-sized van as a mobile drop-in for sex workers. Seven days a week, the organization currently uses a passenger van to hand out food, harm reduction supplies, clothing and other health and safety-information to 20 of the city’s most marginalized women working the streets. The van, however, is limited to space, restricting the services outreach workers can provide. The society has operated a larger RV in the past, and has seen the impact it has by simply providing a physical space for the sex workers to report things like bad dates or connect with a housing program. After endless years of abuse and kicks to their self esteem, any help sex trade workers can get means the world to them. Someone needs to show they care about that woman standing on the street corner. Readers respond: Fend for yourself during a disaster Re: Urban society slides into helplessness (B.C. Views, Sept. 9) Thanks for the article on the way society cannot handle any small upsets to the status quo. I remember the big windstorm of 2006, which incidentally was in December. I was a 60-plus senior at the time, and my power was out in a residential area of Colwood for five-anda-half days, as our two-house power line was not a high priority in the queue. I watched the hydro trucks go by day after day, waiting my turn for reconnection. Fortunately I have a wood stove that can heat my house, boil water and cook food. It does get tiresome living by candlelight but I had my disaster radio nearby to listen to the local station give updates on how hydro was doing. Most of my freezer contents were moved to friends’ homes, and my garden shed became my refrigerator. Anyone with common sense can understand that the repair crews work tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible, and perhaps the media could help by reminding people that they need to fend for themselves for several days if the major earthquake ever occurs.

And, does this mean that School District 61 is out of compliance with basic education requirements? As the keeper of the public trust for education in School District 61, I am deeply concerned that chair LoringKuhanga and her fellow board members are failing to live up to their basic responsibility -— namely ensuring that our children are getting the full educational experience that they are legally entitled to. We have a huge amount of liquor stores who are selling wine now. Wine has been around for much longer than any other alcohol and it has the ability to be a conversational piece.” Bain said wine is generally becoming more popular, and is now a $2.8-billion industry in B.C. With Victoria’s wine scene expanding, a local festival is catering to the growing number of average wine consumers who enjoy sipping the beverage. The Victoria International Wine Festival kicks off Friday (Sept. 25) and features more than 300 wines from 100 different wineries around the world. Participants can taste wines from Australia, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, the U.S. and France. The event is a traditional wine tasting, with each participant receiving one ounce of wine, descriptors of what they should be tasting and what region it comes from. Seminars will be included as well. Unlike some wine festivals, organizers are trying to cater to the average wine consumer, not just sommeliers. “We’re not trying to have really expensive wine at the festival. While we do have

Thyroid Diseases The thyroid is a small gland located below the Adam’s apple in your neck. Thyroid diseases sometimes result from inappropriate TSH levels, or may be caused by problems in the thyroid gland itself. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Hypothyroidism results in low levels of T4 and T3 in blood. Not having enough T4 and T3 in the blood causes your metabolism to slow down. If hypothyroidism isn’t treated, the symptoms will progress. Hyperthyroidism results in high levels of T4 and T3 circulating in the blood. These hormones speed up your metabolism. Thyroid disease is diagnosed through laboratory tests and a physical exam. The usual treatment for hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with iodine (including radioactive iodine), anti-thyroid medications or surgery.

El Nino, La Nina pose double whammy for B.C. coast Pamela Roth Victoria News

Victoria and Esquimalt residents may have to batten down the hatches this winter as El Nino and La Nina weather systems make their way to the West Coast. Ian Walker, a geology professor at the University of Victoria, is an expert when it comes to coastal erosion and sea level trends. His research has taken him from Haida Gwaii to California, and he recently coauthored a new study on El Nino and La Nina. According to Walker, coastal communities need to prepare for the possibility of extreme flooding, and erosion that comes with both weather systems. Low lying areas in Victoria and Esquimalt or those living close to coastal bluffs could see a greater chance of flooding, erosion or road closures with the arrival of storm season this year. “We won’t really know until December or January, but all indications are that it’s going to be a very extreme one (El Nino),” said Walker. “It can’t help to be prepared and I think that’s the

important take home message.” El Nino is a natural ocean temperature phenomenon that results in warmer than average coastal waters near the equator that move towards South America’s northern coast, then turn as far north as Haida Gwaii and Alaska. Because the waters are warmer, Walker said their levels are higher due to thermal expansion. Some areas up the coast have seen as much as 40 cm to 70 cm of additional water. La Nina is the opposite of El Nino, explained Walker, and usually follows some time after. During La Nina, the storm track that usually sits over Washington and Oregon shifts northwest to Vancouver Island, producing stronger winds and bigger waves, but average ocean levels are lower. A significant La Nina in 2011 and 2012 created lots of wind damage and coastal erosion. Walker said 1997/1998 and 1982/1983 were the most extreme seasons thus far because of the two weather systems, and this year is shaping up to be close to that or even more

More than 3,500 fire chiefs talked shop this week Hundreds of fire chiefs from around the country descended on Victoria earlier this week for the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs annual education conference. This year’s gathering at the Victoria Conference Centre focused on providing education and innovation around issues such as stress injury, mental health, fire ground command and leadership. Transportation of dangerous goods and emergency preparedness were also discussed. “We have a very diverse program because to be fair, we have a very diverse Canada,” said Chief Paul Boissonneault, president of the association. “We’re dealing with the current issues head on and are providing assistance to our chief officers so they can deal with these issues on a local basis as well.” Victoria Fire Chief Paul Bruce said he focused on building relationships with city hall, department members and the public. “A big part is being able to meet and network with your colleagues from across Can-

A new season begins tonight as the Royals take on the Portland Winterhawks at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, with the puck drop at 7:05 p.m.

Royals ready to return to the ice for a new season Winterhawks in Victoria to usher in start of a new WHL season As the end of September nears, our nation begins to settle in for the months that lay ahead, and this is where we, as Canadians, do some of our best work. It’s the time for holiday meals with families, walks among the coloured leaves and (in some places) snowflakes fall to create a blanket of white across

our country. The last few months of the year also means it’s time for one of the truest forms of Canadiana; that’s right, it is officially time for hockey season to begin! The Victoria Royals are ready to go for their fifth season in the Western Hockey League and the prospects for another great season filled with exciting hockey lay in front of us. Head coach Dave Lowry returns for his fourth season behind the Royals bench to lead a team with a solid mix of veterans and rookies as they look to make their mark in competitive Western

Conference. Team Captain Joe Hicketts returns for his 19-year-old season and will anchor the blueline for Victoria. Hicketts will play alongside two talented 16-year-old blueliners in Scott Walford and Brayden Pachal who will look to make their mark in the league. Coleman Vollrath returns between the pipes for Victoria. The 20-year-old netminder is back for his fourth year with the club and second as the team’s starting goaltender. Up front, Tyler Soy and Jack Walker will look to build upon last year’s offensive success, and a brigade of fresh

faces will suit up for Victoria including former Portland Winterhawks’ forward Ethan Price and highly touted rookie centreman Matthew “Bubba” Phillips. The first four years have brought many unforgettable nights at the SaveOn-Foods Memorial Centre, and this season will add to that total. So load the kids into the car or grab a couple of buddies and head down to the Barn on Blanshard. There is no better time to make some new memories, relive some old ones and remember why going to the rink and cheering on the home team is the Canadian way.

The Victoria Royals will begin their 201516 WHL regular season with a pair of games against the Portland Winterhawks on Friday and Saturday night. Friday’s game is the home opener while Saturday’s contest is presented by Save-On-Foods. Puck drop for both contests is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Royals are excited to welcome back Canadian sports entertainer Cameron Hughes for Friday night’s game. The Ottawa native has ignited crowds at over 1,125 sporting events across North America and will bring his unique method to pump up fans and cheer on the Royals. The first 2,500 fans at Friday’s game will receive a Marty the Marmot tumbler cup. The Investors Group will be on hand at Gate 1 for a food drive supporting the Mustard Seed Food Bank. Fans are

encouraged to bring their non-perishable food donation to the game to receive a discount offer for a future Royals’ game. The Zone will be giving away $100 to 10 lucky fans prior to puck drop. Fire damages building on Pembroke Street An early morning fire caused $50,000 in damage to a building on Pembroke Street Wednesday morning. The Victoria Fire Department was called to 1260 Pembroke St. around 3:30 a.m. When crews arrived heavy acrid smoke was coming from the front of the building. The fire was located in the building’s storage locker area. It also damaged laundry facilities. The cause is still under investigation. editor@vicnews.com

Victoria artist heads to international chalk art festival Ian Morris started his art with $2 in his pocket

Ian Morris remembers what happened on February 14, 2004, not because it was Valentine’s Day, but because he had less than $2 left in his pocket to survive. The Victoria resident decided he had to do something to earn himself money to buy dinner and get through the rest of the day. With his last few dollars, Morris bought a box of white crayola chalk, grabbed a chunk of burnt wood and started to draw. In black and white, he reproduced a portrait by Rogier van der Weyden, the Renaissance dutch painter. “I made enough (money) to get through the day, so that was encouraging,” said Morris. He’s come a long way since then. Morris has participated in chalk art festivals in Edmonton, Port Angeles, Medicine Hat and Victoria. His work has earned him a world-wide reputation as an anamorphic (or 3D as it is most commonlyknown) chalk artist. He’s also been invited to the 2015 Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida, the largest chalk art festival in North

It’s all surreal. To receive this kind of recogni-

just a super nice guy. As everybody knows he has been applying his trade on the side-

walk outside of Eddie Bauer,” Vickers said. “He’s a world-calibre guy here on our sidewalk downtown and we just don’t know it.” In Victoria, Morris has established a specific sidewalk on Government and Yates streets that he decorates with his 3D paintings several times a week. For Morris, his work is about creating a connection between artist and audience. “To me, it’s not the picture itself or the art-making, that’s merely a tool to create a common ground,” he said. “People walking along are enclosed in their own spaces and have a fear of interacting with people they don’t already know. I create a common space and it’s amazing what can happen.” The Sarasota Chalk Art Festival runs from Nov. 9 to 16 in Venice, Florida and features more than 50 artists. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Royals kick off season

The Victoria Royals will officially kick off their season this weekend with a pair of games against the Portland Winterhawks. The home opener on Friday will be graced by Canadian sports entertainer Cameron Hughes. The Ottawa-native has ignited crowds at more than 1,125 sporting events across North America, and will pump up fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Marty the Marmot tumbler

cup, and a food drive supporting the Mustard Seed will take place at Gate 1. Fans are encouraged to bring their non perishable food donations to receive a discount on future games. The zone will also be giving away $100 to 10 lucky fans prior to puck drop. Prior to Saturday’s game, Save-On-Foods will be outside Gate 1 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with hot dogs and refreshments available by donation to the B.C. Children’s Hospital. The first 2,000 fans

will receive the official 2015/2016 Victoria Royals Save-On-Foods calendar. The puck drops for both games at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available, but fans are encouraged to buy them in advance at selectyourtickets.com or call 250-220-7777. St. Andrew’s Local diver develops new diving system school site decision delayed Kendra Wong Victoria News

Due to overwhelming attendance during a public hearing last week, Victoria city council’s decision to approve or reject a proposed development on the St. Andrew’s school site has been deferred to October. The development at 1012 Pandora Ave. in the North Park neighbourhood calls for 209 rental units amongst two buildings — one six storeys and the other four. There has been much controversy surrounding the project from residents against the development, citing concerns with traffic volumes, the height of the tower overshadowing the Mason Street Farm and a lack of green space. Residents in favour believe it could revitalize the area. During the first public hearing in late August, roughly 40 names were on the list of people wanting to speak about the development, while last Thursday’s continuation drew dozens more. The decision has been deferred until Thursday, Oct. 8. The meeting will be held in council chambers at 7 p.m. editor@vicnews.com

A local saturation diver has developed a new system to allow divers to do their work more quickly, efficiently and safely. Orion Foster, Victoria resident and owner of Soliton Underwater Construction, recently took to the waters off James Bay to test out his new mobile surface supplied nitrox/mixed gas system. Foster is a saturation diver by trade. He builds and maintains oil and gas structures up to 198 metres below the surface, spending the bulk of his career working offshore in south east Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. He spends most of his days roaming the ocean floor, encased in a baggy diving suit and steel helmet. Hot water

The new system that Foster built includes lights, cameras and communication box that allows divers to get from point A underwater to point B, while staying in constant communication with supervisors on the surface. It is a system that Foster said is a first on the West Coa st. “It gives me a huge amount of capability. So I can dive for a week straight and I don’t run out of air,” he said. “It’s a critical system that gets a diver to and from work safely and the ability to convey information back and forth to the surface so that you can do things efficiently.” kendra.wong@vicnews.com

There has been a boom in the number of condos and apartments popping up in downtown Victoria that are catering to a different type of homebuyer, according to the Vancouver Island Construction Association. “The residential marketplace is driving the construction sector on Vancouver Island, especially in the capital region,” said Greg Baynton, CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association. Of the association’s 500 members, roughly half are busy keeping up with the demand in construction of condos and apartments. According to Certified Victoria, there are more than 18 projects or 1,200 high density homes, not including townhomes, that are currently in various stages of construction in the City of Victoria. The Janion development includes the restoration of the historic Janion Hotel on Store Street at Pandora Avenue and will include 122 condo units; the Legato development in the 900-block of Yates Street will be 17-storeys and include 88 condo units; while the 10-storey Escher development on Broughton Street will include 84 condo units. According to Baynton, there are a number of factors driving the boom in condos and apartments, including low interest rates. He said much of the market is being created by first-time homebuyers looking for innovative housing solutions as well. “We’re seeing very small footprint condos and houses to create an entry point for first-time homeowners. ton said. “There’s been two or three constructed in the past few years and the low interest rates make that possible.” Excavation recently began on a surface parking lot behind the former Capital Six Theatre on Yates Street for a 15-storey, 209-rental unit building. Phase one of Hudson Walk on Caledonia Street, a 16-storey development with 166 units, is well underway, while a 13-storey, 138-rental unit development on
