Those are the signs of what car buffs of all ages always look forward to,yes you guessed … It’s Cruise–In. Welcome to The Langley Good Times Cruise–In 2015 with fresh new faces on the board (and some familiar ones too). We are excited to be part of one of North America’s largest mixed outdoor car show. It was started by a simple idea back in 1997 by some local merchants to draw people to the downtown shops, at the same time raising money for local charities. With 430 registered vehicles in the beginning, has now grown into over to 1,500 registered vehicles. It all starts early Saturday morning September 12 with the sound of rolling thunder and the sweet smell of high octane fuel in the air as the fine cars, trucks and specialty vehicles begin to make their way to be parked in the downtown streets of Langley. While you are watching this eye popping extravaganza, be sure to enjoy a pancake breakfast from one of the local charities. Barnes Harley-Davidson will also be in the casino lot with a huge bike display as well as the Police Motorcycle team. The Value Village lot will house the “New Car Corral”, lowriders and 3 car clubs. Of course street after street are also filled with the finest customs
and specialty vehicles second to none. Take a stroll through Douglas Park to soak in the crème de le crème of the Concourse D’elegance where you will wow your senses. Feeling a bit hungry? Stop in to the many local restaurants and coffee shops to refill your tank. Back again by popular demand with previous years of success In-N-Out Burgers will once again be coming up from California to sell their famous burgers with all net proceeds going to

Cruise-In Benefits Local Charities <<< MONIQUE TAMMINGA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> > > > Not only is the Langley Good Times CruiseIn Western Canada’s best-attended car show run solely by volunteers, it’s also among the most generous. One-hundred per cent of proceeds raised through the Cruise-In go directly to Langley charities. Last year, the Cruise-In board of directors happily handed over a record $60,453 to several local non-profit organizations. This windfall is often a lifeline for smaller scale charities, which rely on the Cruise-In donation to help them offer more to those they serve or to purchase much-needed equipment. Charities benefitting from this year’s Cruise In are: Legacy Water Search and Recovery Society, Langley Community Support Service, Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association. Below are these charities’ stories and how the funds raised at Cruise-In have helped make a difference.
LEGACY WATER SEARCH AND RECOVERY SOCIETY Legacy Water Search and Recovery Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing closure to families of drowning victims. Often victims of drowning are never located, and police are unable to resolve the case successfully because they don’t have the specialized equipment needed. Legacy Society was created after Langley teens Brendan Wilson and Austin Kingsborough drowned while canoeing together on Nicola Lake on April 20, 2013. The RCMP dive team attempted to locate the boys’ bodies but didn’t have the specialized sonar equipment needed. After a week without success, the families contacted an underwater search specialist from Idaho, who uses side-scan sonar equipment. The boys’ bodies were found in less than 30 minutes. But the Idaho pair are busy helping people all over North America. So family and friends in Langley decided they would like to acquire the equipment and training to assist families in finding their loved ones. “We are actively training volunteers in side-scan sonar and ROV operations,” said Legacy director Scott Lebus. “We are excited again to be chosen by the Cruise-In committee to be one of their sponsored groups.” Legacy Society will have a booth at the Cruise-In for anyone wanting to learn more about what the non-profit group is doing. Legacy is raising funds to purchase their own sonar equipment. “The sonar equipment we are using is on loan from Imagenex Technologies Inc in Port Coquitlam,” said LeBus. “We did have our first recovery on Dec. 16, 2014 when we located Keenan Nicodeemus near Saturna Island.” The 21-year-old drowned after a boating accident near Mayne Island.

To learn more go to: legacywatersearch.com LANGLEY COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS SOCIETY Langley Community Support Groups Society has quietly been offering hope after stroke, to dozens of people of all ages in Langley for the past 20 years. Marilyn Piticco has made it her life’s mission to help and offer support for those recovering from stroke or other long-term ailments. She volunteers her time to run a bi-weekly program at Walnut Grove Community Centre. Stroke survivors can meet up with other survivors in a supportive and inspiring atmosphere. Piticco brings in an occupational and speech therapist as well as incorporating other therapies. Young stroke survivors have played Wii games to re-learn motor skills. Piticco is always coming up with fun and innovative ways to help stroke survivors recover. On the average, a donor or sponsor will donate $500 per year to the local service. “This donation (from Cruise-In) is like getting 24 sponsors to donate to us every year, which would be so difďŹ cult for me to ďŹ nd that kind of support,â€? said Piticco.

Their tireless work has been why we continue to improve our weekly programs.” LANGLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is thankful to be one of Cruise-In’s chosen charities once again and just as excited to be located in the thick of all the action this year. Last spring, its popular Penny Pincher thrift store moved to 20550 Fraser Highway. “We are very happy in our new location in the heart of Downtown Langley,” said LMH Auxiliary president Diane Thornton. “We are looking forward to the Cruise-In on Sept. 12. “We will have our booth/tent up outside our store — which is very exciting for us to be participating right on Fraser Highway.” With help from last year’s Cruise-In contribution and other donation money, the LMH Auxiliary was able to pledge $157,500 to the hospital in June. LMH is now able to purchase a portable ultrasound for $ 70,000 and seven defibrillators for $87,500. An army of volunteers working at the hospital gift shop, lotto booth and Penny Pincher Thrift Store have helped the hospital purchase much-needed equipment for decades. When Penny Pincher thrift store moved to its new bigger location at the former Coast Capital building they bought the building. In celebration of its 65th anniversary in 2013, the LMH auxiliary provided $500,000 towards the expansion of the hospital’s maternity unit, which opened up in 2014. It is all made possible by the countless volunteer hours offered by the people in blue, who dedicate their time to support patient care.
CRUISE-IN FOR A CHANCE TO WIN
VALLEY THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION The Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association (VTEA) has provided therapeutic horseback riding opportunities for children and adults of varying abilities since 1983. The aim of therapeutic riding is to improve balance, co-ordination, mobilization of stiff joints and help weak muscles. It also helps prevent contracture, improves circulation and aids in relaxation of spasticity. It also provides riders with outdoor recreation at the Aldergrove equestrian indoor and outdoor riding rings on 256 Street. In addition to providing a source of exercise and sense of achievement, riding gives participants independence from artificial aids such as crutches and wheelchairs. The Rivision Comes to the ‘Custom Car Showcase’ <<< DAN FERGUSON, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>>
J F Launier is bringing his award-winning “Revision” and several other cool cars to the Langley Cruise-In.
>>> For all its considerable beauty, J.F. Launier’s bright yellow 1964 customized Buick Riveria, “Rivision” is no “show queen”. The car, winner of the prestigious Ridler Award at the 2014 Detroit Autorama, has run quarter-mile drag races and done doughnuts and emerged undamaged. But a recent encounter with a hamhanded video crew looking for the perfect angle was another story. “They wanted a shot of the interior,” Launier says. “They physically bent the door hinges.” Which is why Launier is happy that the new custom car showcase at the Langley Cruise-In features roped-off display areas that will keep people a safe distance from the bodywork. For the first time ever, visitors will be
able to view best-of-the-best cars like the Rivision at the Rokstad Custom Car Showcase and do it without having to pay an admission fee. There will be 30 cars, all viewable up close, but not so close the owners have to worry. Launier, a custom car builder from Osoyoos is bringing the Rivision to the showcase along with three other creations by his company, JF Kustoms: a ‘57 Chevy Red Line, owned by Dan MacDonald; a ‘67 Mustang Kardiac, belonging to Gord Phillips and a ‘57 Chevy convertible, owned by Barry Blomme. The Rivision is the one expected to draw the most attention. When a Canadian car builder takes the Ridler Award, it’s roughly equivalent to the Australians winning the America’s
Cup or the Americans taking hockey at the winter Olympics. The award is named after the first promoter of the Detroit Autorama, and is considered the most coveted prize for custom car builders in North America. The Autorama, billed as “America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show” began in 1953 when the Michigan Hot Rod Association held an exhibition of 50 cool cars at the University of Detroit Field House. In 1957, professional promoter Don Ridler was hired and added music acts like Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Big Bopper and Duane Eddy, to the event. Last year, Launier took the Ridler award with his heavily modified 1964 Buick, a two-seater with a “boattail” back end from a ’71 Buick Riviera.

He invested over $300,000 in parts and materials and more than 20,000 hours of labour over six years. The result is wider and lower than the original, with hand-built fenders, hood and chassis. Every inch of metal was re-fabricated except for the door panels, Launier says. Power is provided by a turbocharged 850-horsepower Chevy 6.2 litre engine with the turbos mounted in the trunk to cool the compressed air and eliminate turbo lag. The turbo location also has the benefit of putting more weight over the car’s rear drive wheels. The “turbine blade” mag wheels are custom-made by Mike Curtis, and so precisely calibrated to each corner of the car that they can’t be rotated.

Naskarz Program Aims to Engage Youth <<< GARY AHUJA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> Eleven years ago, Alex Vasiljevic began to notice a rash of stolen cars in the parking lot where he worked. Vasiljevic, a youth worker at the Ray-Cam Co-operative Centre in the Downtown Eastside — one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the country — sometimes even caught youth from the centre in the act of stealing cars. While some people may believe incarceration is the answer, Vasiljevic felt otherwise. “There is the attitude, lock these kids up for doing something bad, but we as a society have to do something different with these kids,” he said. “After witnessing these kids stealing cars, I realized two things. “One, obviously they loved cars. And second, we offer a lot of good programs, but we are not reaching these kids.” It prompted Vasiljevic to think outside the box, leading to the NasKarz program. Naskarz is an acronym for Never Again Steal Karz. The program is designed to get at-risk youth actively engaged in some sort of productive activity which would hold their interest. “If we can actually create some activities around these
kids who are joyriding, stealing cars, they would be interested,” Vasiljevic said. “The thought came from there, we have to offer something different.” The program expanded in 2008 when it partnered with the Vancouver Police Department — specifically Sgt. Tim Houchen — and Vancouver Community College. Participants learn all aspects of maintaining, repairing and rebuilding vehicles. One of the vehicles they restored was a 1947 Dodge se-
dan, which was used as a Vancouver police detective car back in the day. During the school year, the program runs twice a week, and then during the summer, it is four days a week. Since its inception, Vasiljevic figures more than 300 youth have come through the program. “The best feedback that I get is when kids come back to volunteer in the program or continue in some sort of college program,” he said. Some of them tell you, no matter what program they go into, that NasKarz was their entry point or confidence for college. That is one of the best things we hear.” “Also when they bring their friends, that is the biggest compliment we can get.” Challenges remain for the program, primarily securing the necessary funding to help alleviate some of the costs. “We have been scraping, borrowing, fighting for money,” Vasiljevic said. “That is challenging because I am not a professional fundraiser, none of us are. We manage as a group, but for me, by now I thought we might have two or three years’ funding in the bank, not year-to-year.”

More Cars Than He Can Remember <<< DAN FERGUSON, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> When someone asks Bruce Charles how many cars he’s built over the years, he pauses for a moment before he replies. “A dozen at least, maybe more,” Charles says. “I’ve had a lot of hot cars.” He was 15 when he built his first custom car, a Roadster with a 302 Ford motor. He became interested in cars around the age of 11, when he began working at a garage. His family ran a trucking business, so he had a good start on acquiring the gear required to transform an old and neglected vehicle into something shiny and new. “I’ve always had tools,” he says. Now a 57-year-old grandparent, the Abbotsford resident will bring his latest project, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS to the invitation-only “Custom Car Showcase” at the Langley Cruise-In. “I kind of fell into it,” Charles says of the Camaro, a project that he took over and finished after someone else started the job. “He got tired,” Charles says. Cruise-In Participant has been Building Custom Rides for More Than 40 Years tribute to classic Detroit design, sitting on shiny new mag wheels. The car is a “rotisserie restoration,” Charles explains, one where the body comes off the frame and is attached to a metal form that rotates like a gigantic barbecue spit. It makes it easier to do the kind of precise and painstaking work required to win car shows. And the gleaming orange Camaro is a winner. In its first year of exhibitions, it has won first place in its category at the B.C. Classic and Custom car show at the Tradex exhibition centre in Abbotsford and the Peach City Beach Cruise competition in Penticton. Charles likes to raise his car up on stands so viewers can get a good look at the shiny underside as well as the gleaming motor beneath the hood and the restored interior. Around the same time the Camaro was being constructed, Charles also put together a 750-horsepower ‘70 Nova SS. The Nova has also had some good outings, taking a first at the Tradex and a second at the Beach Cruise. For the Langley Cruise-in, Charles is bringing the Camaro to the invitation-only Showcase, a new feature of the annual event that aims to attract the best of the best cars by providing a roped-off and fenced-off area to keep vehicles’ elaborate paint and chrome work a safe distance from uninformed hands.

Breakfast Club Steps Up to Finish Truck After being diagnosed with cancer, John Welsh was helped by Langley breakfast club of car fans <<< DAN FERGUSON, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> Almost every Sunday for the last 20 years or so, John Welsh and some like-minded friends have been getting together at a Langley diner on 200 Street to talk about cars over breakfast. They discuss their latest projects, swapping tips and offers of assistance. “I’ve helped most of these guys on other projects,” says Welsh, a retired Vancouver Police officer who lives in Cloverdale, near the Langley border. “We tell the same stories over and over and over,” laughs Al Ganske, one of several breakfast regulars who live in Langley. “There’s always at least 10 of us,” says Ken Berrecloth, another Langley resident. About three years ago, Welsh was planning to fix up a 1949 Fargo truck that he had just acquired. It was going to need body and engine work, he knew. “It was running at the time, but so-so.”
He was a fan of the Canadian-built one-ton flat deck truck, similar to the ones he used to drive when he was working on the docks in Vancouver prior to becoming a a police officer. Welsh was six months into his new project, when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of bone marrow cancer. His weight plummeted and, with it, his energy. That was when some of the people from the Sunday breakfasts decided to step in. Welsh had been planning a fairly modest restoration, but Ganske, an accomplished body man, had other ideas. Ganske says there was a friendly argument with Welsh which, as the body man, Ganske naturally won. And so Ganske, Berrecloth and 11 other men started working on the truck, restoring it to a state of continued on next page

shiny red perfection, complete with a fresh white oak rear deck, shortening it by a foot to make sure it would fit in Welsh’s garage. As a final touch, they painted a “Welsh Fargo” logo on the door. “That was my wife’s idea,” says Welsh. The volunteers devoted three days a week over 18 months to the project. While the truck was being worked on, Welsh’s health was improving.
He began to gain weight and feel more like himself. And by the time the truck was done, he was well enough to take all his friends out for dinner to say thank you. Lately, he’s been driving the truck with plans to attend this year’s Cruise-In. But only if the weather is good and he doesn’t have to worry about rain mussing the immaculate paint. “I’ve got about 10 miles on it now.”

No Ordinary Hot Rod Langley man transforms 1956 Chevy dragster <<< DAN FERGUSON, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> > > > Harold “Swifty” Swift always wanted a 1956 Chevy. The Langley man, a former president of the British Columbia Hot Rod Association, has been into cars since he was a kid, owning a number of cool rides over the years. But the ride he always wanted was one of the coolest. “I had many cars, but never a ‘56,” says Swift. Swift found his Chevy under a protective cloth in a nearby private garage, where it had been sitting for 18 years. It was “Mission Impossible,” a former race car that once posted 11.1 runs at the old Mission Raceway. That was back in the 1970s, when it had a 425-horsepower 409 stuffed under the
hood. In the 1980s, it had been retired from racing and rebuilt into what one article described as a “mild custom beauty” with a smaller engine. It didn’t get a lot of driving and eventually ended up in storage. When Swift learned about the Chevy, he tried and failed to convince the owner to sell. After three years, he was about to make a trip East in search of a ‘56, when he made one last call to the owner. Swift told the owner that he would be miffed (he used a slightly stronger word) if the car was sold while he was away from home hunting for a Chevy of his own. The owner thought about it and named a price.

Swift has done a lot of work on the drive train since he acquired Mission Impossible, modernizing it with a bigger engine, transmission and rear axle, along with rack-and-pinion steering, disk brakes and slick new wheels. But no body work. “All the work that’s been done on it is underneath,” Swift says. That’s thanks in part to the car’s extended stay in a dry,
weather-protected environment and all the work that was done before it landed there. The bright racing colours Mission Impossible used to sport had been replaced by a two-time mix of robins-egg blue and white, and the interior had been redone. It’s been to every Cruise-In since Swift acquired it.

While a lot of restoration and customization was done before he bought the car it remains a work in progress. This photo was taken about six months ago, before Brown made a number of improvements to make it roadworthy and add some visual touches. Photos by Dan Ferguson.
There is a reason why most triple-carb layouts are nonfunctional, Brown says. They are a pain to set up. Getting the three two-barrel carbs to run, and run properly was a frustrating process, but Brown persevered.
Brown built and antiqued this “shipping crate.” It’s actually the cover for the battery and rear fuel tank.
After finally sorting out his carburetors, Brown said “this thing is a frickin’ hootenanny” now that it runs right. So he had it painted on his door. Axe Graphics in Maple Ridge did the work.

The 1968 Mustang convertible, priced at $25,000, did not shine the way it did in the photos on eBay. Nor was it in “100 per cent excellent condition” with a 302 engine and numbers matching, as was advertised. “I was just stunned at what it looked like,” said Prudhomme, who won the eBay bid before seeing the vehicle in person. “It wasn’t what I was expecting. The pictures that he displayed on eBay were phenomenal. It must have been a perfect day, the pictures were just immaculate. And I go there and I thought, ‘well this isn’t the car.’
“I was really disappointed.” Despite almost being duped out of thousands of dollars, Prudhomme didn’t shy away from eBay quite yet. He really wanted this model of car. Another ‘68 Mustang convertible, this one for a shockingly low price, popped up on the website in Rhode Island. Because of its price, this seemed an even greater risk to bid blindly upon than the previous car in Florida. Prudhomme won this car, too. He had it transported from Rhode Island and picked it up across the border in Bellingham, Wash. “When it came off the trailer, I was in awe,” he said. “She was stunning to see, a bright red continued on next page

Everything was solid.” Prudhomme, a 20-year veteran Township of Langley firefighter and 30-year resident of Langley, has now owned his Mustang for five years. In that time, he has added a centre console, detailed the engine bay and rebuilt the 289 engine with 303 HorsePower and 300-lb torque.

“She moves like a bullet now,” he said. A regular at car shows around the Lower Mainland, Prudhomme and his Mustang will be stationed in the concourse field at the Cruise-In this year. What he loves most about the Cruise-In is the number of people he meets while they marvel at his car, Prudhomme said. “[It’s] the enjoyment of it,” he said. “I just love people when they look at the car and … they ‘oh and ah’ at it.”

In-N-Out Burger Still Sizzles at Cruise-In <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> It’s not just the automotive eye candy that spectators at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In crave. For many of the men, women and children who flock to the annual car show, it’s to fulfill a hankering that only a famous In-N-Out burger can satisfy. The popular California-based chain restaurant, known for its legions of loyal patrons throughout North America, will wheel a cookout trailer to Langley for the sixth year to serve their famed burgers and hand over the proceeds from every sale and sponsorship to the Cruise-In’s official charities. It takes three whole days for the truck to make it across the border, but it’s one unforgettable trek that’s worth every mile, according to Brian Nako, the manager of special foreign events for In-N-Out. “The event is awesome and the people are great,” said the California resident, who has made the trip each of the past three years. “We get welcomed with open arms.” And for the army of famished burger fans, open wallets, too. It’s not uncommon to wait up to two hours in the rain or sweltering heat for a bite to eat, but it’s well worth the wait, says Nako. “Everything is made fresh and cooked to order. We hand-leaf our lettuce in the morning and slice our tomatoes and onions the day of. It’s about as fresh as you
can get it.” While it’s no easy feat serving up such a tall order of fare, it’s a service that In-NOut is happy to provide. The cookout trailer rolls into the marketplace bright and early the morning of the Cruise-In to begin prep for the feeding frenzy. Everyone onboard from the dishwasher and driver to the cooks and cashiers are out washing and polishing the truck. Once they are done making the burgers, word gets out and the line starts to build. “It’s a busy day, but it’s a lot of fun,” said Nako, who works alongside a crew of 11 others. “We sell quite a few burgers — this year, we’ll be making 1,500.” While the truck travels the interstate, Nako’s team travels via airplane, which is a short two-and-a half-hour flight. They’ll spend the night before and after the event here, giving them a brief chance to get a taste for the big show. “We’re usually stuck at the trailer, but I’ll take a walk around and see some of the cars around there. It’s such a great event and we’re happy to be a part of it. We’re really a Southern California, laid-back car kind of company, so I think it works well.

enough to get his licence, he decided to sell the vehicle. Still, cars would become a hobby for both brothers. Don Penner worked as a mechanic at a dealership, so the brothers would spend quite a bit of time purchasing cars and rebuilding them. Penner’s all-time favourite was a 1962 Impala convertible. “One of (Don’s) co-workers smashed it up and we bought it and rebuilt it,” he said. “My influence of car culture was from my brother — who made cars go faster — and his friends, who customized cars,” Penner added. And it is the effort car lovers put into their vehicles that attracted Penner to car shows. “It doesn’t matter what kind of car because I believe anybody who puts any amount of time or money into a car is passionate,” he said. He has been attending the Langley Good
Times Cruise-In for the past nine or 10 years. “The Langley Cruise-In is about cool cars, friends of like-mind, and the whole car culture experience,” Penner explained. One of his favourite memories of the event is back when the Cruise-In used to hold the Friday night cruise. A friend lived along the route. “We would gather at their place with all our cars, do a potluck and barbecue and watch all the cars go by,” he said. Penner is a member of the Central Fraser Valley Vintage Car Club and his current car is a 1965 T-Bird. He attends about seven or eight car shows a year in the Lower Mainland and the Interior.

In addition to checking out all the automotive eye candy and entertainment, the semi-retiree is certain he’ll come across many familiar faces in the crowd — after all, he is known as the ‘Rod God’ in these parts. “I like that it’s a camaraderie of every type of person that comes out,” he said. “There are young kids, old people — everyone shows up. It’s really an exciting thing.” To say Herrick knows a bit about local car culture would be an understatement. This Langley hot rodder lives and breathes it. cars,’” laughed Herrick. “After that, the name just kind of stuck.” Herrick’s long-time love affair with cars started in high school. “It was just something my friends and I all did together,” he said matter-of-factly of a hobby that has turned into
a life-long passion. “One had a chicken farm out at 32 Avenue in White Rock with a big shop. That’s where all us hot rodders and car guys would hang out. “We’d buy old cars off fields and put them back on the road. It was a lot of fun in comparison to driving your
dad’s car.” Herrick’s first ride wouldn’t turn heads on the road, or at any car show for that matter, but it’s a set of wheels he’ll never forget. “It was a 1947 Chevrolet Aero Sedan that I bought in continued on next page

Rod God’s ’57 Pontiac Safari Wagon Debuts at Cruise-In Blaine, Wash. for $65,” he said of the beater. “It was a fun car, but I didn’t paint it because I couldn’t afford to.” The interior was also worse for wear, so Herrick improvised, using any affordable materials he could get his hands on – even if it meant driving a car that resembled his grandmother’s curtains. “Interior was expensive, even back then. Instead, I bought floral curtains and fit my seats and door panels with the fabric. It was just like getting into a rose garden.” Herrick has driven his share of fixer-uppers over the years, but he no longer has to drive out to his friend’s chicken farm to resurrect the vehicles from the junkyard or field. These days, he can often be found in his own garage/repair shop, working on a 1936 Ford coupe or polishing his 1957 Pontiac Safari wagon — the latter is a car that Herrick is looking forward to showing off at the Cruise-In this year. “This will be the first time it will be viewed anywhere in B.C.,” he said of the ride that was brought up from Georgia. “I haven’t shown it anywhere yet.” The two-door silver iris sport wagon is a car that Herrick has been searching for the past 30 years. “There were only ever 1,292 built, and mine is 444. Out of these, I doubt half are left in existence.” Cruise-In goers can get an eyeful of Herrick’s rare ride in the Ikandy Tattoo parking lot,

where he’ll be alongside his fellow car club members — many of whom are local, too, he notes. “Did you know that Langley has the largest amount of car clubs than anywhere else in B.C?” asked Herrick, who is president of The Westcoasters Car Club. The non-profit group is a diverse car club filled with car buffs of all ages. “People with a wide variety of vehicles, from the oldest wooden wheeled cars to the pro-street and beyond have joined and become members,” noted Herrick. As a club, The Westcoasters, who range in age from 17 to mid 90s, partake in various charity events, including the Morgan Crossing show for the White Rock Hospice, Harrison Hot Springs for the food bank, and one in White Rock for the Semiahmoo First Nation — just to name a few. “Our club doesn’t have a bank account — it’s all for charity. We do it for the love of the vehicles and getting people together,” said Herrick. From the BC Hot Rodders and The Westcoasters to the Road Men, there are many different car clubs out there, and they all support the Cruise-In. With so many cars and big personalities, there’s the potential for conflict. However, Herrick credits the event’s board members, especially past-president Riccardo Sestito for the smooth sailing and undeniable success. “It gets busy because you get people from all over the U.S. and Canada, but it always goes really well. It’s a big hurrah for Riccardo – he has gone over and beyond and doesn’t look for any handshakes. He’s a pretty cool cat.”

Memorabilia <<< GARY AHUJA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> The evidence is on the walls. A quick look inside the garage of Mike Herrick’s South Langley home shows his passion. The walls are lined with posters and signs. Old-school gas pumps are also prominently on display. The appeal of memorabilia is that people like to think back to their younger days. “(It’s) all that stuff that pertains to their childhood, all that nostalgic stuff that brings back memories from when you were young,” said Herrick. The 59-year-old has been collecting memorabilia for the past 15 or 20 years, and while some do it for its value, he does so for the sake of nostalgia. “I grew up in the ’50s and ’60s and remember all that stuff,” he explained, rattling off types of pop he used to drink or a certain brand of tobacco.
Herrick, the president of the Westcoasters Car Club — a 480-member club from around the Lower Mainland — says memorabilia collection is a popular hobby. And while some use the internet as a way to track down items for their collection, Herrick prefers the old-school ways: searching and word-of-mouth. “You are always on the search. A lot of hunting (around), or yard sales and swap meets,” he explained. “Or you hear about someone who has got a bunch of stuff they have to get rid of. “There are still diehards like myself who find stuff through word or mouth or someone phones you or you go to help someone with their car and you see they have a bunch of stuff they want to get rid of and you are lucky enough to be continued on next page

“I like the ones that are a bit tattered and scratched, whereas some guys want them perfect,” he admitted. “Sometimes the perfect ones to me just don’t have the character of where they have been, like half the old cars out there.”

Searching junk yards for original parts, welding and painting everything themselves, members of the Roadmen Car Club are keeping the hotrod tradition alive. Open only to models from 1964 and earlier, the cars in this club are not to be confused with rat rods, said Vancouver chapter vice president Jay Peterson. “It’s the traditional look,” he said. “Some people look at our cars as rat rods, but that’s not the angle we are trying to get at. “We call ourselves traditional hotrodders.” Instead of going to the store and buying “a bunch of bling off the walls,” their
cars are built the same way their fathers and grandfathers would have done it. “We’re just trying to keep the old-time part of it alive,” Peterson said. “We make most of our stuff. We’ll take parts out of a ‘40 Ford and weld it into a 1930s coup. “We do stuff like that. We try to use what’s in the wreckers and what’s in other cars.” They’re returning to Cruise-In again this year, and car fanatics can check out the traditional treasures at the Roadmen Roundup in the parking lot behind Frosting Cupcakery on Fraser Highway. To match their traditional style, they are also hosting a pin-up girl contest from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. along with live rock ‘n roll music from Willy and the Wannabees.

This model of car had a sleeker styling, which gave the car a distinctively bulletlike appearance. “I never saw (this car) at a car show but I saw one at the Cruise-In,” he explained. “Ever since then, I have been on a quest that if I ever had the opportunity, I was going to get one of those cars. “I just loved the design of it.” About seven years ago, Rokstad found a Craigslist post advertising the car he was looking for. So Rokstad and his friend, Riccardo Sestito, made the trip to Burlington, Wash. They found a barn filled with vintage vehicles.
“It was absolutely full of cars,” Rokstad said. “When we went in there, it was such a mess. “This farmer had a love for Thunderbirds and convertibles.” Sestito wound up buying three vehicles, and Rokstad — on his second trip to the barn — settled on a rangoon red 1962 T-Bird convertible. Having sat in a barn with dirt floors and dust falling from up above, the car required some work. Rokstad has enjoyed not only restoring the vehicle, but also rebuilding parts of it over the years, including rebuilding the transmission, or as he describes it with a laugh,”the start of the insanity.”

Cruise-In Entertainment >>> Anyone who frequents cars shows knows, it’s not really a car show without rock ‘n roll music and plenty of live entertainment. This year the Cruise-In has several music acts to gets the crowds moving almost as much as the classic cars do. Urban Tribe Trio Where: Douglas Park When: 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. Heidi McCurdy, lead vocalist of the Urban Tribe Trio, is a singer and songwriter with a global-soul-jazz sound. Known for her sultry voice, she brings soulful passion in her music to match the passion of the hotrods on display at Douglas Park. She has been in the professional music industry for more than 20 years, founding the bands Maisha and Yellow Belly in the 1990s. McCurdy has performed and toured with various bands in Canada, the United States and Europe, and has released an award-
winning full-length CD, Fickle Mind, and a recent acoustic EP, Sand and Stars. Live Rust Where: Casino Parking Lot When: 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. No, that’s not Neil Young playing. But the soulful, distinctive sound of the Live Rust tribute band makes it difficult to tell the difference. Playing four sets at Cruise-In this year, Live Rust is brining the best from every decade of Neil Young to thousands of car fanatics. Made up of band members Roger Potter (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Joe Backus (vocals, drums), John Haynes (vocals, bass), and Phil Derksen (vocals, guitar), the band’s songs are authentic in sound, appearance, instruments and props. Six Gun Romeo Where: Fraser Highway and 203 Street When: 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. Six Gun Romeo, a Langley-based rockabilly band, will be thrilling crowds at the 203 Street and Fraser Highway stage at this
year’s Cruise-In. This is the second year the five-piece band gets to be a part of the entertainment lineup. Fronted by John Dykstra, Six Gun Romeo puts out high energy rock ‘n roll and is a perfect fit to belt out the tunes among rat rods and classic cars. The band has released two albums and have played more than 100 shows across Canada and the United States, sharing stages with Bad Company, Lonestar and Sawyer Brown. Elvis Elite Where: Mainstage at Fraser Highway and 56 Avenue When: 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. Back for the 10th year in a row, Elvis Elite is as much a part of Cruise-In as the classic cars. In true Elvis style, every year his swooning voice and swinging hips attract a throng of women to the Mainstage, located at the intersection of Fraser Highway and
56 Avenue. With a background in political cartooning, Steve Elliot, aka Elvis Elite, fell into the tribute world by accident one night at a karaoke bar. A natural as Elvis, he quickly became a popular performer at shows across the country and was named the Top Canadian Tribute Champion at the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival in 2004. But it isn’t just Elvis that he mimics. Over the years, Elliott has discovered that he has an uncanny knack for many impressions. Roy Orbison, Nat King Cole, and Arnold Schwarzenegger are all likely to make an appearance or two during his shows. Each performance promises to be a new experience with costume changes and fresh songs throughout the day. First Chance to Look at 2016 Harleys <<< MONIQUE TAMMINGA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> > > > Visitors to the Langley Good Times Cruise-In won’t just have fourwheeled beauties to look at this year. The two-wheeled variety will be strutting their stuff, too. North America’s oldest and most powerful motorcycle, Harley-Davidson will be part of the show in downtown Langley on Saturday, Sept. 12. Barnes Harley-Davidson will be taking over the northeast corner of the Cascades Casino parking lot with bikes, clothing, an ice cream truck, biker games and even on-site tattoos. “We are really excited to be there,” said Barnes Harley-Davidson marketing manager Kevin Chow. “Rain or shine, it’s going to be a great time.” Barnes is bringing the newly released 2016 Harley-Davidsons to CruiseIn. The new models will only have been released two weeks prior to the show, so bike enthusiasts at Cruise-In will get some of the first looks at this year’s bikes. There will also be a tattoo artist from Last Call who will be doing tattoos right at the show. A DJ will spin tunes while bike games take place. Barnes will be selling Harley-Davidson’s signature MotorClothes apparel as well. Lords of Gastown will be in the house and will have their wears available for purchase as well. Swap Meet and Car Corral <<< MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> If you’re feeling inspired after a long Saturday of drooling over classic cars, why not head to the Cruise-In swap meet and car corral on Sunday to find parts to build your own? With more than 100 vendors selling elusive parts in the swap meet and more than 100 vintage cars for sale in the car corral, thousands of car enthusiasts flock to this event each year. Last year saw nearly 8,000 people attend, and this year organizers are expecting similar crowds. “It’s gets bigger and bigger each year,” said Lori Watts, Cruise-In secretary and treasurer. “It’s just a part of the car culture … because of the difficulties in finding old parts for the vehicles,” she said. “It’s a good place where these guys can
go and find something for their car. “It’s not like new cars, where you can go into Ford and order (parts).” The meet not only offers good deals for buyers and sellers, but also is a great benefactor to local charities. The proceeds from the event are split 50/50 between the Cruise-In charities and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation. The swap meet and car corral are being held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13 in the Kwantlen Polytechnic University parking lot, at the corner of the Langley Bypass and Glover Road. Parking at the university is free for the event. Admission is $2 for the public and $20 for vendors. Pre-registration is not required.

Visitors are invited to head to the Value Village parking for the new car corral, a showcase of the latest vehicles on the market. Not to be confused with the swap meet and car corral on Sunday, the new car corral runs all day during the Cruise-In on Saturday, Sept. 12.
This is the third year the Cruise-In is incorporating this event. It will feature Spyder three-wheel motorcycles from Greater Vancouver Powersports and new cars from the OpenRoad Auto Group (Audi, BMW, Mini, Infiniti, Lexus, Porsche, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Scion, Toyota and Volkswagen). Rare Cat Will Prowl Cruise-In <<< MONIQUE TAMMINGA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> A rare cat can be spotted at this year’s Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Langley Township firefighter Paul Tekatch will be proudly showing his 1970 competition orange Cougar Eliminator. After only two years in production, skyrocketing gas prices spelled the end of the Cougar Eliminator, making this “gentleman’s muscle car” a rare cat, indeed. In fact, there are only 592 Cougar Eliminators registered with the Cougar Club of America. There were only 2,267 like his made. And just 11 Eliminators with 428-4V Cobra jet engines, like Tekatch’s, were sold in B.C. Two of those were ordered by George Black Motors in Burnaby where his dad worked. That’s where Tekatch first spotted this beauty in the showroom at the age of 12. “I want to have one of those when I’m older,” he told his twin brother, 40 years ago. It wasn’t until 2009, that his dream came true and he purchased what may be the exact Cougar Eliminator he’d seen Paul Tekatch with his prize-winning Cougar.

Car Spent 18 Years in Storage as a boy. The original owner’s name is Elaine, from Fort Langley. The car was last insured and on the road in 1986 with 31,276 miles. It was stored in a warehouse for 18 years, and needed of a lot of work. The car’s last year was spent under a commercial canopy. “After buying this car on Feb. 11, 2009 and cruising around town, I can now understand why the name, ‘The Gentleman’s Muscle Car,’ was chosen for the Cougar Eliminator. (It’s) a striking and strong muscle car, but also, an extremely beautiful luxury car,” said Tekatch. Tekatch is proud to be showing his car at “the best car show in B.C.” As a “car guy,” he thinks Langley is where it’s at to have a classic car. “My personal opinion is I think Langley has the most collector cars in the Lower
Mainland,” he said. “There are tons here — some hidden, some being driven around town. There are private collections that only certain people get to see.” “I’m proud to be living to Langley and proud as a town to host this great car show,” he said. “Last year I had to work, but I’ve been coming out to the Cruise-In since it started. This year I’ll be there, kicking the tires and talking to all my buddies.”

The 10-year-old’s drawing of a hot rod was chosen by the Cruise-In’s board of directors to appear on the official children’s souvenir T-shirts at this year’s event. “I just like that they’re cool and they do wheelies and stuff,” said a nonchalant Menard about the muse for his artistic creation — a design that will be worn by hundreds of young car fans from all over North America. half an hour to complete from start-tofinish. “I draw cars a lot, so I’ve had lots of practice,” he noted. The Grade 6 student from Surrey has been head-over-wheels about cars since the age of three, according to his mother, Bree Veldhuizen, who works with Cruise-In past-president Riccardo Sestito. Veldhuizen said she was so impressed by her son’s automotive artwork that she submitted it on his behalf back in the spring. “I’m very proud and pleased for him. He does really good work and lots of people will see what’s he’s capable of… I wish I could draw as well as he could.” Menard may not have inherited his artistic gene from his mother, but it’s a trait that flows in the family bloodline. “His aunt on my side is very artistic,” said Veldhuizen. “She went to Emily Carr and has done murals around town, including the one

His dad is artistic as well.” What Menard does get from his mother is plenty of hot rods, classic cars, trucks, etc. — all on a micro level. “He has always had a real love of cars… for his allowance he would get Hot Wheels for doing his chores. I think he’s up to 650 now!” Every September, Menard looks forward to seeing some of his favourite models on a bigger scale throughout downtown Langley. “I just really like all cars and the CruiseIn is really cool. It usually falls around my birthday.” “We try to go every year,” said Veldhuizen. “It’s a family event for all of us.” When it comes to offering tips and tricks for fellow budding artists, Menard is happy to share his recipe for success. “You just have to practice over and over again — take your time and go slow,” he said.

Back in Time
<<< JIM MCGREGOR, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> Dan pulled the last cinch tight and doubled the strap back through the buckle. That should hold it. God, it was a thing of beauty. Sitting there on the trailer — rusted, moss covered, dented and scratched, it looked like a candidate for the crusher. But to Dan, it was the 1949 midnight blue Ford Club coupe that Uncle Bob had driven into their driveway so many years ago. The ďŹ rst car he had fallen in love with. He took one more step back to get a full view of his treasure, remembering the chain of events that had pulled him here today. One of the guys at work had said casually that his brother lived beside an old farm that was littered with wrecks and parts and pieces. Dan had asked him if there were any old Fords there. Three weeks later, at coffee on a Monday morning, his buddy dropped three pictures of old Fords in front of him: a 1956 sedan, a 1949 pick-up and the car right out of his dreams, the ’49 coupe. He knew he had bought it the minute he saw the photo but the next weekend, when he made the two-hour trip out into the valley, he played the ‘barter game’ with the farmer. Dan knew he wanted it, but pretended he didn’t. The farmer knew Dan wanted it, but pretended he didn’t really care if he sold it or not. A guy thing. No one was surprised that Dan had a wad of hundreds and ďŹ fties in his wallet, just in case. Today, he pulled a rag from his pocket to wipe the grease
off his hands. They smelled of stale gas, tired oil, must and mould, pure aphrodisiac. He bent down and picked up a piece of chrome trim, lying in the fender-high grass, and threw in the back seat. He absently wiped off a cracked headlight as he walked around the trailer and watched the car transform in front of his eyes. Dan could remember that day Uncle Bob had shown up as if it was yesterday. Even though he had only been seven years old, he remembered the smell of the seats, the shine of the paint, and the deep idling sound of the athead V-8. He could hear the country music on the radio, yes, in the car, a radio! The fender skirts made it appear as if the back end was oating on air and there was a chrome spotlight through the door post on the driver’s side, just like a police car. “Who wants to go for a ride?â€? the big man had said. Dan and his brothers wrestled each other to get the best spots and off they went. The windows were down, the wind whistled in, mixing with Hank Williams, which was turned up full volume, and Uncle Bob passed everything in sight. That little coupe might just as well have had wings. People looked and pointed. He had sat up straight in the seat so his friends could see who was in the car — the brand new car, with the radio. He could remember pulling into the gas station and Uncle Bob saying â€œďŹ ll ‘er up and get the windows will ya!â€? Then he came out of the garage with four stubby Cokes and a couple of Oh Henry
bars. What a perfect day. “Dad, can we go now?� Dan’s son yelled from the truck and broke the spell. To his son, the car was just a rusted piece of junk that had dragged him away from his Xbox. Did his dad really think this was going to be a father-andson project car? But there his father stood, off in some other world. Mom was right when she said Dad would be living in the garage the next couple of years. Dan couldn’t get the smile off his face. His work plan was scribbled out on a white board in his shop back home. Frame off, sand blast, engine tear down, brakes and steering, upholstery and paint. Piece of cake. What he couldn’t do, he knew others that could, and there would be plenty of monkey wrenchers coming and going from his yard for the next little while. Dave was the electrical wizard, Bob the brake guy, and Steve was the master painter. Dennis would take the seats out, rid them of the mouse nests and return them looking like new. Dan knew a guy who had a brother who knew a guy that ran a chrome plating business and Dan’s wife had a long lost cousin who owned a tire shop. Yes sir, Dan would have this puppy passing everything in sight in no time. He pulled out of the farmyard, waved goodbye to the farmer and started home, the long way. Yes sir, sun glasses on, arm out the window, nodding and smiling at all the guys that honked or waved. They knew. They knew he had just bought a time machine.
