Ben De Jager reaches into a bin full of Gewürztraminer grapes in search for the pinkest selection.

The bundle passes his visual test before he measures the required balance of acids, sugars, and pH necessary to create a harmonious wine. With that, the winemaker knows the grape variety at Columbia Gardens Vineyard

and Winery is ready for harvesting.

“G e w ü r z t r am i n e r has a rose petal taste when it’s processed as wine,” he explained.

“But right now it has a tropical fruit, lychee or kiwi taste to it.”

He crunches into the grape. There is a time and place to savour his product but now is not it. Harvesting has arrived four weeks early this year due to a hot, dry summer, and he and his wife Tersia have

many varieties to pick, crush, ferment and age before their bottled and enjoyed.

Quality is key and shared by all who take part in the family effort.

His father-in-law Phillip Du Toit travelled all the way from the couple’s former home, South Africa, to lend a hand. While he’s out in the vineyard collecting only the nicest looking clusters by hand, Ben’s son Darin De Jager, 14, crushes the grapes.

Darin drags a rake along a bin full of grapes and drops the ripened fruit through a shoot and into a rotary crusher.

He watches as the grapes are mashed into a mush that is pumped into a presser, where the seeds and skins are removed for the soon to be white wine. The juice is then ready for the fermentation process that can extend for nearly 30 days, depending on the type of wine produced.

After that, the product is placed in a barrel — plastic, oak or stainless steel — to age for upwards of 18 months for a red variety.

“We dictate and control that taste during the ageing process and then put it on the shelf,” said Ben. “You can buy Costco wine for seven bucks a bottle, but that’s wine that hasn’t been put through this ageing process.”

Ben’s stepladder is well worn in from the sampling done straight from the barrel during the fermentation process.

“I made wine for roughly eight years before I bought the winery but it’s only two years now at the winery,” he said.

The couple moved to Canada in 2006 when Ben found work in mining. The man with an educational background in agriculture always wanted to get back to farming, a passion found right after school. But paying the bills led him to other work with a promise to get back to his real passion, eventually.

Owning a winery and a sheep farm are now part of a retirement plan growing on the Trail property.

The vineyard, nestled in the heart of Columbia Gardens, counts itself as the first commercial sized vineyard and winery in the Kootenay Valley. The first grapevines were planted in 1996 and over the years,

The rows of vines are zoned by the grape variety that support nearly all nine products produced. Only the Merlot and Syrah grapes are sourced from the Okanagan because Trail’s growing season isn’t quite long enough for those varieties.

The micro-climate is far different than the neighbouring growers and even further than what Ben experienced in South Africa.

“You have to use what you have,” he explained. “In South Africa, if you want to use cold stabilization you have to put it in a cooling room. Here, I actually take the Gewürztraminer and put it out for three months in the

snow.”

In just a couple short years, the De Jager family has expanded the property by adding additional features such as a guesthouse, conference/small event facility and upgraded their wine tasting room.

The couple has also introduced new products, including a port, and is eager to release their newest creations: a red wine blend for the restaurant market, sparkling wine and semisweet rose. Ben expects these will be available in about a month’s time.

“We want the world, Canada and even Trail to be proud of what we have,” he said. “We want people who live here to say to their visitors, ‘You have to go to the winery.’”

THE ROYAL THEATRE PRESENTS

The Charles Bailey Theatre kicks off this year’s exciting Children’s performance series on Saturday, Oct. 3. North Americans who grew up in the mideighties and early nineties know the man who crawled magically out of that hollow log for 900 episodes in the hit TV show “Fred Penner’s Place.”

The two-time Juno award winner for Best Children’s Album wrote the ever catchy songs ‘The Cat came back’ and ‘Sandwiches.’ With over 55 million fans, Fred Penner will fill the theatre with appreciative new young fans from the region and kick start a very exciting performance season for kids ages 4-10.

Three more shows will be feature at the threatre.

Montreal’s dance company Bouge de La bring five dancers and the story of Bedtime to the stage on Nov 15. With the bed as the very centre of this piece, choreographer Hélène Langevin explores four slices of life drawn from childhood where babies, children and adolescents transform their beds into a territory of multiple possibilities. Here the bed is much more than a piece of furniture; it is a symbolic and transitional object that allows for passage from one phase to another.

On Jan. 17 The Secret Life of Walter Manny will entertain you with energetic physical comedy by Trent Arterberry for both children and adults with agility and humour. Inspired by Trent’s son, the play explores the vivid fantasy life of a child.

Lardeau may owe spelling to French Canadians Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

One-hundred twelfth in a somewhat alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week we began looking at the origin of Lardeau, also spelled Lardo, which has perplexed historians for generations. Nelson old-timer R.G. Joy tried to get some answers for a column published in the Daily News of Aug. 10, 1951.

“I remember meeting one of the pioneers who saw Lardo townsite before it received its name,” he wrote. “‘Why was it called Lardo, oldtimer?” I asked. ‘I think it has something to do with a lardpail,’ he replied. ‘And I think that is one of the reasons that place has been wrongly spelled Lardeau.’

“As years went by I was still searching for the correct spelling and asked a learned couple whom I met there about two decades ago. The word Lardeau is from the French gold in water, I was told.’”

That explanation that it comes from l’ord’eau’ seems highly unlikely. More probable is that Lardeau does have something to do with lard or bacon, although the spelling may well owe something to French.

Other area place names made to sound French include Comaplix and Incomappleux, which are actually derived from a Sinixt word. (Lardeau was sometimes spelled

Lardeaux, but there has never been any suggestion it too was from a Sinixt word.)

Milt Parent wrote in Circle of Silver that “In studying reports by the early explorers … one observes the preponderance of French names already established in the region …

Add to this Geological reports of the Dept. of Mines declared the Lardeau to have been prospected as early as 1865 and the fact that French Canadian trappers probably made early use of this untouched district, one can’t help but deduce the name Lardeau originated from this source.”

Parent added that Lardeau is a rare surname and woman by that name from Quebec who visited the area to learn about its origin wasn’t very successful. Michael Neault also researched the surname and discovered very few people named Lardeau in Canada. There were 317 births in France by that name from 1966 to 1990.

“Whether Lardo is nothing more than a corruption of the word by someone who couldn’t spell is only conjecture,” Parent wrote. “But if Mr. Lardeau was around he would be very proud of the extent to which his name has been used.”

Some have observed a similarity between Kaslo/Kasleau and Lardo/Lardeau, although Kaslo was never actually spelled Kasleau; only much later was it suggested that it might have been named after a Jean Kasleau, whose existence is doubtful.

The town of Lardo at the north end of Kootenay Lake is today known as Lardeau. Although the present spelling received official approval in 1902, the post office didn’t adopt it for another 45 years.

According to the July 1978 issue of Canoma, in 1902 the Geographic Board of Canada approved the spelling of Lardeau, but the railway didn’t start using it until the mid-1910s and the Lardo post office, which opened in 1899, didn’t change its name to Lardeau until Oct. 2, 1947. Officially, the BC Geographic Names database only recognizes the form Lardeau. It’s pronounced LAR-doe.

While the name’s origin may be unclear, its use was contentious, as we’ll see next week.

Teens and stress

By Dr. David Smith As the new school year begins, children and teens will feel more stress and pressure. A certain amount of stress in our lives is normal and helps drive achievement. In fact, learning how to cope with stress and deal effectively with the demands of life are important skills that teens and young adults must develop to have happier, healthier, more productive and resilient adulthoods.

Kids have always experienced stress.

In my practice, however, kids seem more stressed than ever — by academic demands, by parental pressure, by the constant social media presence in their social relationships, and by their own expectations of themselves and their fears for the future.

The 2013 McCreary Adolescent Survey of 60,000 BC youth found that 83% of all youth said they had been stressed in the last month. Girls are more likely than boys at every age to report extreme stress —feeling so stressed that it prevented them from functioning properly. When stress builds with no release, it can lead to anxiety, depression, and despair.

As the school year starts, here are seven proven steps that you and your kids can take to better cope with stress this year.

1.) Have a family routine: The more reliable and regular the routine at your home, the more stable and in control your children will feel. Regular times for getting up, going to bed, doing homework, having dinner, doing chores, and engaging in extracurricular activities all enable children to create a schedule for themselves and know what to expect. Numerous research studies have shown that regular sit down family dinners are associated with increased self-esteem and school success and lower rates of eating disorders, alcohol and substance use, and feelings of depression or thoughts of suicide.

2.) Limit and monitor screen time: Social and peer group issues for many youth cause greater stress than academic pressure. In previous generations home was a refuge from that social stress. Now social media amplifies that stress 24/7. Set limits for time spent online, and monitor what is happening with your youth online.

Talk to your kids about how to be safe and how to conduct themselves with social media.

3.) Ensure enough sleep: Young children need at least 12 hours of sleep a night and teenagers at least nine or ten, but many are getting much less. Adequate sleep reduces stress and increases coping skills. Don’t let kids sleep with their cell phones or laptops as late night

screen time, as well as texts and emails, prevents good quality sleep. Limit caffeinated drinks; make sure you model good sleep habits, too.

4.) Get regular exercise: One of the best ways to manage stress is to move.

Recent studies have found that activity out-of doors, such as walking or running in nature, has great stress reduction power too.

5. ) Don’t over schedule: A certain amount of extracurricular activity is good for kids — it teaches them new skills, creates new friends, gives them exercise. But so many young people have so much on their plate they become overwhelmed and exhausted.

Give them unscheduled downtime, too.

6.) Engage in activities that provide personal value and meaning: Studies show that engaging in activities that help youth feel connected to the world and provide personal value and meaning are good for stress reduction.

This can mean something different for everyone and can take the form of religious worship, nature walks, meditation, uplifting art, music, or books or any other spiritual connection that helps provide purpose and perspective to our lives.

7) Learn some key stress-reduction skills: Cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT) like relaxation breathing, visualization, mindfulness meditation, thought stopping, “chunking” big tasks into smaller, doable pieces and other skills can help manage stress. In the next column, I will talk in depth about some key CBT skills that we all should know how to do.

Modelled after CBC’s “The Dragons’ Den”, where qualifying entrepreneurs pitch their business idea to a group of potential investors, Junior Dragons’ Den, which started as a West Kootenay-Boundary wide student business competition two years ago, will expand throughout the Columbia Basin starting in the fall of 2015.

Launched and created by CFDC Greater Trail, the competition is now open to students from Grades 8 - Post Secondary level throughout the Columbia Basin.

In order to enter, students must submit a business concept paper explaining their business idea or exapnsion (in the case of an existing business). Submissions are then short-listed and those students selected, matched with a mentor to refine their idea into a one page business plan and video pitch, before advancing to compete in one of three regional competitions or qualifiers (depending on where they go to school). Seventy is the new 50, according to the Village of Fruitvale.

The community is getting behind its fit seniors and “middlers” with a new free workout facility in the basement of the Fruitvale Memorial Centre.

“A lot of people have one or two pieces of fitness equipment at home, but they don’t have the whole gamut,” said Lila Cresswell, village chief administrative officer.

The Gym went from idea to reality when the village received a $25,000 seniors’ grant from the government this spring and was backed by other local contributors. The funding covered the cost of brand new equipment such as a rowing machine, a couple treadmills and ellipticals, a stationary bike and much more.

“The idea of seniors has changed,” said Cresswell. “There are different stages of seniors, but I really believe that the seniors that are between 55 and 70 are extremely active.”

Castlegar native Jennie Gallo has signed a one season contract to play women’s hockey in Switzerland. Gallo will be playing for Ev Bomo Thun based in the city of Thun. The team is part of the Swiss A League and will travel throughout Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

After graduating from Stanley Humphries Secondary School in 2007, Gallo was offered a full scholarship to play NCAA hockey for the University of Maine Black

Bears.

Since graduation Gallo has spent a few years at home coaching hockey, teaching power skating and playing in men’s leagues while working at Saint Michael’s School.

The team is only allowed to bring in three imports a year, and Gallo is honoured to be one of those chosen. “I am excited to have the opportunity to play the sport I love while having the opportunity for overseas travel,” said Gallo. “It’s like a dream.”

She will be packing up her skates and leaving for Switzerland this week.

Kids attending this year’s Pass Creek Fall Fair will once again have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a life-size Tonka toy at the Dirty Digger for a Day event.

At Dirty Digger for a Day kids can climb aboard either a bobcat or an excavator and drive through an obstacle course with an adult operator who will show them the controls.

“They usually set up different rocks or logs or something, and then the kids are able to pick up a rock with the excavator, and they pick it up in the air and they drop it on the ground,” says Chris Popoff, owner of Dirty Diggers. “Usually whenever I’m in the machine I try to let the kid drive it back.”

Popoff says he started the event four years ago.

“It’s just something that we put on,” he says. “You know you’re always digging on the corner and the kids are coming out to check out the machines and stuff, so a couple of years ago we thought what a great idea to put something like this on out at the Fall Fair.”

It’s a free event, supported by local sponsors including Brandt Tractor, which provides brand new machines for the kids to ride on.

Nelson looks at regulating panhandling The City of Nelson is looking at a bylaw that would ban “obstructive” panhandling.

City council gave first two readings to the bylaw last week, which comes at the request of police and bylaw enforcement officers.

According to a staff report, about half of the city’s panhandlers comply when asked to move along, but the other half are confrontational, use extreme profanity, and refuse to leave.

The proposed penalty would be $25, although obstructing a bylaw enforcement officer could

come with a $500 fine.

Councillor Anna Purcell asked if that’s enforceable.

“Can the panhandlers pay $500 fines for obstruction, or if they cannot, what does that set in motion for them?”

Although council debated some of the particulars, they ultimately unanimously approved the first two readings with the understanding the version for third reading in a month will incorporate some of their suggested changes.
