Harvest Share busy with long growing season

With over 15,000 pounds picked so far, Harvest Share is still going strong a few weeks away from finishing for the season.

The Creston Valley Food Action Coalition program harvests fruit and vegetables from homeowners who are unable to pick it, and then gives onethird to the owner, one-third to the volunteers and one-third to food banks, churches, schools and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

“The food bank has been going through lots,” said Harvest Share manager Clayton Fenrick. “All the churches are supportive, and the schools were happy to see us right away. Everybody is really happy to get fruit to share.”

This summer’s warm weather got the program off to an early start, with the first pick on June 29, cherries on the schedule for most of July, and apples and pears ready at the same time.

“Everything was three weeks to a month early, so that kind of squishes the season,” said Fenrick.

The 15,000 pounds collected so far has come from 59 picks, which included 4,500 pounds of pears in three days, and 25 pickers spending over seven hours in one day picking cherries. With potatoes, winter pears, walnut and hazelnuts still to come, there’s a chance that last year’s 33,000 pounds will be matched.

The program has had help transporting all of this season’s fruit and veggies thanks to the donation of a used truck by Kokanee Ford.

“And it’s a great truck,” said Fenrick.

Harvest Share also started a new initiative this season, hosting five workshops to teach canning and jam making, helping ensure that what this season’s 99 volunteers picked doesn’t go to waste — and adding a welcome social

aspect to the program.

“You get to meet so many people,” Fenrick said. “Everyone involved is friendly and personable.”

PCSS gets additional funding for teachers

Funding for two new teaching positions at Prince Charles Secondary School was approved at the Sept. 14 School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board meeting in Kalso.

PCSS and Nelson’s L.V. Rogers Secondary School have been in the news at the start of the school year, with numerous parent and student complaints about scheduling and inability to enroll students in their requested elective courses.

The addition of teaching positions will help “alleviate the pressures on our students and our staff,” Supt. Jeff Jones told the Nelson Star last week.

“This will give us space and time to get clarification and data, to get our actual enrolment numbers figured out.

There appears to be more pressure than normal this year and we thought we needed to attend to that for our students and our staff.”

Jones told CBC Radio last week that L.V. Rogers and PCSS administrators would have to exceed their budgets and “spend their way out” of the problem. But at Tuesday’s school board meeting, trustees voted to provide additional resources.

“I brought forward the motion supporting senior admin in their decision to bring in these new resources, and that got passed,” trustee Curtis Bendig told the Star. “We’re hoping that alleviates the immediate pressure so we can drill down and work on longerterm solutions so this doesn’t become a recurring thing.”

We pulled out of wave one and were put in wave two, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why all these glitches weren’t fixed in wave one.”

“This is certainly going to help,” he said. “Right now we’re working on the large classes, and with the kids who have been on the waiting list.

We’re also working with Grade 9s who don’t have an elective.”

September 14 •The theft of about $360 worth of diesel fuel siphoned from a semi on Helen Street was reported.

•A 14-foot trailer was stolen from a Northwest Boulevard business.

•Crown counsel is considering charges following a domestic dispute in Erickson.

September 15 •When police conducted a well-being check, they discovered the resident had been taken to hospital.

•Creston RCMP investigated two reports of possible sightings in the Amber Alert kidnapping case that started out in Blairmore, Alta.

•A male who was surprised to learn from train workers that he was now in Canada jumped from the train and became the object of an unsuccessful police search.

•A male reported getting a series of hang-up phone calls.

•A grizzly bear was reported in the yard of a Wynndel resident. The bear was attracted by fruit on trees.

•Solar lights were thrown at a neighbour’s house on Ash Street.

September 16 •A wooden patio chair was stolen from 20th Avenue South.

•A vehicle drove into an irrigation district gate on Fourth Street South, causing about $1,000 in damage.

•Police were called to deal with an unwanted male at a Vancouver Street office.

September 17 •When police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 2800 block of Highway 3 the driver fled from the scene. The vehicle turned out to be stolen and police have identified the culprit. Charges are pending.

•Police were unable to confirm a case of possible elder abuse.

•A Cory Road resident complained about a neighbour’s loud music.

September 18 •Police spoke to a person who made Facebook threats.

September 19 •Police are investigating an incident in which a male in Crawford Bay was attacked by three other males wearing masks. The victim was struck by a baseball bat but not seriously injured.

•A cinder block was thrown at a door at the community complex and a nearby vehicle

was also damaged.

•Police were called to a domestic dispute on 24th Avenue North.

•A report was received about youths riding motorcycles without helmets on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road.

•An Alder Street resident complained about receiving a scam phone call purported to be from Microsoft Corporation. Do not provide any information to such callers, Hammond advises.

•A youth reported missing from Kitchener returned home shortly after the report was made.

September 20 •After a male smashed a window at a residence on 11th Avenue South the homeowner gave chase. The intoxicated culprit made it to the police station before the homeowner caught up and held him until police could make an arrest. Charges are pending.

•A Lower Wynndel Road resident complained that dirt bikes were trespassing on his property.

Carl Erickson, Home Town Thunder Cats Band playing at Sasquatch lose 4-2 to Fernie SUBMITTED

Carl Erickson and the Home Town Band will once again play at the Snoring Sasquatch on Saturday.

“Sad I am to say, this will be our bass-man Gary Snow’s last time around with us,” said Erickson. “He will be heading to Montana. However, not to raise a crop of dental floss but to continue on with his successful business, Tabletree Juice — the finest in the world I might add! In so doing, we in Creston are losing a great friend and wonderful bass player.”

Velle Huscroft-Weitman will be playing violin and singing both lead and harmonies with Erickson, who is honoured to have Donnie Clark playing trumpet, Adam Koenig drumming and Micah Snow (Gary’s son) playing guitar.

“All these folks are professional from top to bottom,” said Erickson. “As for me, I'll be playing rhythm guitar, some tenor saxophone, and mostly singing.

“We have a few new cover tunes we've picked up for you to enjoy, and, of course, my originals. We even have one written by Charlie Chaplin called ‘Smile’.”

How do you think about memory? What are your beliefs about memory lapses, aging? Do you feel powerless towards your memory? Many of us hold unrealistic expectations about memory for what it is and how it works. We seek perfection from it. Our identity is built on our memories: from our favorite foods, our bank account numbers, to remembering what it is like to pet a horse, or be in love. Memory is all encompassing, it represents us in the world, encoded through our senses and beliefs at the time.

Yet under the stress of memory lapses and fears of what it might mean, we tend to overlook the multi dimensions of memory. Take a trip down your lane of pleasant events, calling up memories of smells and sounds, touch and images. Does that experience make forgetting someone’s name seem less important? What would happen if you accepted your memory for all that it is? Next time you beat yourself up for forgetting someone’s name, smile to yourself and know that your memory is full of wonderful memories that have meant so much to you. Practicing your ability to remember special times in your life is a way to build a positive relationship to your way of thinking about yourself. This attitude is good for the memory as well, as adaptive beliefs open up the channels for better reception of

information and the ability to recall information at a later date.

There are many things that affect our ability to remember and countless strategies to maintain or improve it. Two things tend to motivate people: fear and inspiration. Fear can get you going, but it doesn’t make you feel good and is not sustainable. Inspiration, on the other hand, motivates you to move forward, even when obstacles are placed in your way.

Memory Tips: You may have already discovered ways to sidestep the anxiety of memory lapses with creative responses. For example: many of us have figured out that when we can’t recall someone’s name as we’re talking with them, that being honest with them, saying that you can’t recall their name usually leads to “I know what you mean, that happens to me too”, with accompanying laughter.

Another tip: if you can’t remember what you were about to do, stop, go back a few steps, or back to where you first started and wait a few seconds and darn if it more often than not works to recall it. Key to this kind of approach is an inherent belief required that there is nothing wrong, that you just have to give your brain a chance to remember. Thanking your (brain, memory...) or yourself when you do remember seems to be a good reinforcement for trusting your ability to work with yourself.

Another idea is to: ‘distract to remember’, as we cannot feel two conflicting emotions at the same time. If you are feeling frustrated, caught in negative memories or responses, think of something that makes you laugh, as humor goes a long way in enhancing memory function as you relax into another mood. By distracting your stress response you can gently refocus your attention onto what you were attempting to recall. Another approach is to think of a neutral memory (like the colour of your bedroom walls), allowing a defusing of the stressful emotion, and backing out of that part of the brain associated to the anxiety. Recite the alphabet, count to twenty... what tricks work for you to return with a fresh outlook to what you were trying to remember?

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats suffered their first loss of the season Saturday to the visiting Fernie Ghostriders.

Under other circumstances, the 4-2 loss would have been a win, with the Thunder Cats outshooting the Ghostriders 55-25.

“You don’t often lose a game where you outshoot the opponent by thirty,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

But, he added, Fernie goalie Jeff Orser was “excellent.”

“At the other end of the rink, we kind of gift wrapped a couple of opportunities that one of the top players in the league, Cole Keebler, capitalized on,” Dubois said.

Fernie led the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:55 in the first period, and Alec Wilkinson tied the score five minutes later. Carson Cartwright scored Creston’s second on a power play with 3:38 remaining in the second period, but Fernie

tied the score by the period’s end, and added two more in the third.

“We went into the game knowing there were a couple of players we couldn’t let determine the game on Fernie’s end. Ultimately, those two guys were the difference.”

He praised Thunder Cats forward Lien Miller-Jeannotte for creating offensive opportunities for himself, and said the line with Jack Berger, Liam Plunkett and Dylan Hogue “had a lot of energy and had some really good offensive zone shifts, and came close to scoring.”

This weekend, the Thunder Cats host the 100 Mile House Wranglers on Friday and the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday.

The Wranglers are a “big physical team” that beat the Kimberley Dynamiters on the weekend, said Dubois, and added that Creston is ready for the Rockies to visit.

“They look to be much improved from last year,” he said.

“It looks like they’ve brought in some offensive guys who are having some success.”

“Bye mom. I love you. See you in two weeks.” With a hug and kiss I left my 87-year-old mother sitting in her recliner, feet propped up in an effort to ease the edema that had caused her legs to swell to double their normal size. It didn’t occur to me that those would be my final words to her, that in two days I would be giving my consent for a do not resuscitate order by telephone.

“Isn’t it strange that you mentioned your mom in a column last week,” commented a friend on Monday. The peculiarity was not lost on me, particularly after I had spent some time looking through a box of photos that included early pics of my grandparents, whose emigration history was the subject of my last telephone chat with my mother.

Mary Eckersley was born in Michel at the tail end of the Roaring Twenties, growing up poor in a grubby mining community that divided ethnic groups — Italians, Slavs, Germans, most tended to live in clusters, probably because they spoke little or no English when they arrived. Grandpa Bath came from a family of coal miners in Northumberland, but being English was his only advantage. With no other work skills to draw from, he, like his father before him, spent his working life underground, blasting coal seams and loading tramcars to send the bituminous coal to the Earth’s surface.

Mom, her older brother Ron, sister Ada and little brother Harry, grew up in the Great Depression, when miners were lucky to get a day of work a week. Grandma Bath kept the home together, her great joy coming each Saturday afternoon when she sat by the radio to listen to CBC Radio broadcast Metropolitan

Opera performances. She sat listening and reading along with the libretto summary that she got in the mail. Ron headed off into the great unknown when the Second World War broke out and Mom, a good

Lorne Eckersley student, put her energy into the piano lessons that her family somehow maintained.

She graduated as the war wound down and headed off to study nursing in the Provincial Normal School in Victoria. She was a quick learner and soon realized that a life of dealing with blood and illness was not for her. She stuck out the first year, then transferred over to the education department and graduated as a teacher. She often reminisced about her first job. Billeted with a family in Newgate, just north of Montana in what Elk Valley residents referred to as the South Country, she taught all grades in the one-room school. She started early on winter days, when a wood stove had to be stoked to heat the classroom.

Mom was teaching in Fernie in the early 1950s when she met William James Eckersley, a miner who had moved on to work at a sawmill — the opposite path taken by his dad, who had started out operating a portable sawmill before eventually heading down into the mines, where he would work until retirement. They married in 1953 and gave birth to me a year later. In 1956 they packed up and headed for

Calgary, where a friend helped dad land a job with Alberta Government Telephones. The hours were regular, the pay decent and, most importantly, the work safer than in mines and sawmills.

I think it was to her regret that Mom didn’t get her teaching licence in Alberta. Raising a family in a working class neighborhood ate up Dad’s salary and Mom’s time, but eventually she took a job as a kindergarten teacher and she was exceptionally good at her work.

There was never a time when my sisters and I weren’t her top priority and, when Dad sunk into one of his lengthy bouts of depression, she was steadfast and strong. We grew up knowing we were loved and cared for and her life with dad got better after he retired. I have no doubt that their last years together were their best.

When Dad died, she came to live with us in Creston, then spent some years back in Fernie before returning to Calgary four years ago.

I think the great gift that we received as children was in having a safe, loving home and a mother who always welcomed our friends. Any of them who had problems at home knew the Eckersley residence was a safe place to be, a caring and nonjudgmental respite from some occasionally ugly situations.

We learned our values not from lectures but from her actions. My sisters and I have friends whom to this day think of Mary Eckersley as an angel, a mother figure who was there when they needed her most.

Auntie Ada, when I called with the bad news last week, also used the word angel as she struggled to accept that her older sister was gone. I can think of no better tribute.

Meditation helps penetrate essence

In these columns I’ve been discussing an essay called, “Mountains and Rivers Sutra,” written by Zen master Eihei Dogen in 13th century Japan. Today’s column will be a guided mountain meditation that may help you penetrate the essence of what Dogen means when he says, “The blue mountains are constantly walking.”

This meditation is normally done in a sitting position, and begins by sensing the support you feel from your chair or cushion. Find a position of stability and poise, upper body balanced over your hips, shoulders in a comfortable but alert posture, hands on your lap or knees, arms hanging by their own weight, like heavy curtains, stable and relaxed.

When you are ready, bring awareness to your breath, the actual physical sensations of breath, feeling each breath as it comes in and goes out.

When the mind stabilizes even a little, allow an image of a mountain you have known to form in your mind. Feel its overall shape, its peaks, its base rooted in the bedrock of the Earth’s crust.

Now, imagine, if you will, that you are that mountain. Let your head become the peak supported by the rest of your body and affording a panoramic view. Let your shoul-

ders and arms become the sides of the mountain. Your buttocks and legs become the solid base. With each breath, become that breathing mountain, alive and vital, yet unwavering in inner stillness,

As you sit, become aware that as the sun walks across the mountain, light and shadows constantly change and move in the mountain’s stillness.

Your surface teems with life and activity — streams flow, snow melts, night follows day and day follows night. Through it all, you, the mountain, sit still, experiencing change in each moment, aware that you are constantly changing, yet always just being yourself.

In any season, you may find yourself enshrouded in clouds, visited by violent storms, buffeted by snow and wind. But through it all, the mountain sits. When snow falls, the moun-

tain is there. Snow melts and there is furious water flowing down, making great gouges out of the mountainsides, but the mountain is still there.

Though blistering summer heat, it is still there. Lightening strikes the top; it is still there. It’s been there for a thousand years. It will be there for the next thousand years.

Dogen says, “Because the blue mountains constantly walk, they are constant.” What is more constant than a mountain? A mountain is the very image of constancy and yet the mountains are constantly walking.

Everything in the mountain is literally changing. We now know that every atom on that mountain is in motion. The mountain is walking, in constant motion, and yet it is constant in its impermanence.

Suggested practice: Take some time to record this meditation and then during the day go to a place where you will not be interrupted, find a comfortable sitting posture and listen to the recording.

Canadians need action SNAP helps with pets

To the Editor: Reluctantly, the Harper government now promises “swift action” regarding the Syrian refugee crisis. But before Canada resettles up to 100,000 refugees, perhaps we should first deal with similar domestic problems, refugees already within our borders.

Over the past nine years this same government has jailed 87,317 migrants, including hundreds of children, without charge. These people are being held in Canadian prisons (is this what the new jail construction was all about?) waiting for decisions on their cases, languishing without due process for too long. This has cost Canadian taxpayers more than $250 million over the past five years. While we hear about swift action for new refugees, how about some swift action for these folks?

How about swift action and social housing for 30,000 homeless people living in Canadian streets and alleyways?

What about swift action for thousands of aboriginals living in slum conditions without clean water and air? Northern Alberta reserves report increasing cancer rates due to pollution, Shoal Lake in Manitoba has been on a boil water advisory for 19 years and the Whitedog and

To the Editor: (Re: “Few Options for Unwanted Animals”, Sept. 3) I share your anger, desperation and frustration with the runaround and passing the buck policies in place regarding abandoned animals. On any given day I like animals better than people too, Darlene.

I was a member/volunteer at the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society for five years. Unfortunately, there are policies and procedures that must be followed, even though common sense isn’t a part of policies at times. I’ve never been able to follow the rules very well. So after some questions, I quit PAWS. I’m a member of the Spay Neuter Animal Program (SNAP, 250-428- 2811).

It is a low-cost spay and neuter program serving the Creston Valley. SNAP was organized seven years ago.

Officially, SNAP has neutered 1,419 pets during this time.

I’m not a spokesperson for SNAP; however I can offer helpful suggestions.

Betty Bourdon Deal Lister Ephesus, to counter Nestorius, then patriarch of Constantinople, who said Mary should be called Christotokos, meaning “Christ bearer”. This restricted her role to being only the mother of “Christ's humanity” and not his divine nature.

Nestorius’s view was condemned by the council as heresy, since it was dividing Jesus into two distinct persons, one who was Son of Mary, and another, the divine nature, who was not. The council concluded although Jesus has two natures, human and divine, these are eternally united in one personhood. So since Jesus is God incarnate, Mary was known as the Mother of God and entitled Theotokos.

This does not suggest Mary was coeternal with God or that she existed prior to God. The title says more about the nature of Christ than it does His mother.

Even so, Mary was the means God chose to enter His creation. God took flesh from a woman and became man.

As the ancient Church hymn states, “He whom the entire universe could not contain was contained within your womb, O Theotokos.”

Mary helps define the church. Mary’s role in God’s plan for salvation refutes complete patriarchal and masculine authority. She is the second Eve, who did not disobey God. She is the first Christian and mother of all Christians. She is one of the first to know of His resurrection and tradition says she was carried into heaven by her Son at her Dormition. She invites all into the love of Christ.

Highlights of summer hiking

It has been a rather unusual summer with hiking into two new mountain areas, with forest fire tragedies and with expeditions into the mountains being curtailed by forest fires and by forest fire “weather”.

Out There Ed McMackin The first high elevation hike was into the Haystack Lakes area, which was marked by my first sighting of a grizzly at close range, a memory with mixed emotions, both scary and entrancing. I like to make my presence known and I do this by occasionally slapping a hiking stick against the shrubbery or on tree trunks or by blowing a horn to saying “I’m here.”

(This has less effect if by a roaring stream.)

Well, I did this all the way into Haystack Lakes and when I entered the open meadows heading towards the lower saddle, because I could see for quite a distance, I quit making noises.

I spent sometime snooping around the meadows looking for and at plants, and then headed along the brookside meadow towards the saddle. Nearing the meadow adjacent to the steep trail going up to the saddle, I stopped and was poking at a plant with my hiking stick when my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a commotion in the open area ahead of me. I looked just in time to see a young mother grizzly whirl around leap over a log and head into the trees to my left. One cub beat her to it and the other cub was at her heels. I watched them go out of sight in the open forest but moments later saw the young mother standing in the woods looking at me, as if to say, “What is that?”

The one-season cubs, with silver hair down the back, were certainly cute. They could certainly move! I don’t recall the young lady even speaking to me. I initially had a hard time understanding why she let me get so close, less than 100 feet. But then I thought, she, being a young grizzly, may never have seen a human before and thus didn’t feel any immediate threat. Also, my sauntering gait certainly wasn’t aggressive. I didn’t

see them again that day and neither a week later when 30 of us went up on Haystack to install a memorial plaque to Ralph Moore. The grizzly encounter, even though a bit scary, was an unexpected summer highlight. Thought of the camera (nor the bear spray) didn’t even cross my mind. But I have a memory!

The first of two hiking highlights of the summer was on the northwest arm of Meadow Mountain where I had never been before. Actually, the expedition was in two trips one week apart. A third trip, if time had allowed, might have more exploration. The expanse of open alpine interrupted by many shallow ponds and clumps of trees, provided panoramic vistas of surrounding mountains, including Mount Cooper, to the west, with all its glaciers.

The many varied habitats on the mountain provide specific requirements for many diverse species of plants and varied types of flowers. One pond-side meadow was white with a large crescent of solid cotton grass seedheads.

Then there were thick clumps of river beauty whose flowers gave a striking pink hue to the landscape.

The second hiking highlight was an exploratory jaunt up unto the northwest ridge of Snowcrest Mountain. The aim of the trip was to check for a good route to some meadows on the other side of the ridge. (This is also a route to Snowcrest Peak.) Camp was made up Redding Creek Forest Service Road and then the next morning the ridge was accessed. We first considered the steep scree slope closer to the main Snowcrest route, but there was still smoke coming from small fires remaining from a forest fire a few weeks earlier. So rather than breath smoke, we chose a route up the wooded ridge that was accessed farther down Redding Creek road and upwind from the smouldering spot fires.

We avoided the smoke but unwittingly, on a portion of the ridge, ended up walking through of blackened forest, affectionately tagged as the “black forest”.

On much of the wooded ridge upward we followed a game trail that lead into open sub-alpine landscape with great views of the Redding Creek valley and surrounding mountains. On the ridge that leads to the final ascent of Snowcrest Mountain, we had lunch in sight of the north bowl of Snowcrest and two small alpine lakes below.

scapes, mountain vistas or just good cardiovascular exercise, hiking on Meadow Mountain and its many reaches or on Snowcrest’s northwest ridge are excellent choices. However, the access to Snowcrest Mountain is far enough from Creston that it is better to camp the night before. The road along Redding Creek is good compared to the final part of the road up to Meadow Mountain, where it gets quite rough and made more difficult by the short steep sections. Four-wheelers go up there quite regularly. For anyone who wants to hike in a new area, there can still be some great hiking weather in October and even early November. Try out a new area!

The leaves on the maple trees are starting to turn shades of red, orange and yellow. These days I am on the road weekends selling my apple harvest out of town. I am always happy to come back to such a spectacular valley at the

end of a sales trip. I notice how much closer to winter the other folks are and how much warmer the weather is here.

The leaves in my peach block are colouring, as well as the maples. As soon as they fall off the trees I will spray

the exposed branches with a copper spray. It as a protective coating that sticks to the wood pretty well, one of the oldest pesticides known to man. If we have a really wet fall, I will reapply around Christmas. This is to prevent peach leaf curl on the trees next spring.

It’s a nasty disease and one that needs to be looked after ahead of time as there is no real cure for it once it is there.

The two-week weather forecast looks great: a couple of days with a 60 per cent chance of rain, and the rest is sunshine.

Next week’s nighttime temperatures will be getting quite cool. If you can water in all your trees and shrubs for the fall and winter, they will appreciate it. Excessive summertime drought has surely stressed many of them out. I’ve noticed some well established trees and shrubs practically dead from this summer’s drought. A major indicator of this would be premature fall colour and leaf drop in late summer. Rehydrating their

cells now will give them their best chance at reducing winter damage and looking good next spring. Why not protect your investment?

Now is a good time to reseed your lawn. If rain fails to materialize this weekend, you can always set up a sprinkler to help germinate the lawn seed.

I like planting this time of year too (in between harvesting my apple orchard).

The days are cooler but the ground is at its warmest time of year. Plants are naturally sending their energy into the earth, growing roots. One can water them in well and then check the plants for moisture once in a while instead of constantly, as through the heat of summer.

I’ll try to have the nursery open in the afternoons on weekdays. In any case, this is great time of year to get out and enjoy what the valley has to offer.

YKRS raising funds for ICU

EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH It’s been three years since Yahk, the little town that could, did in fact fundraise over $8,000 from its Breast Fest event to support the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH) and the digital stereotactic mammography campaign.

This year the board of the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society has decided to once again get behind EKFH and the $1,000,000 intensive care unit redevelopment project with another fundraiser appropriately entitled Carefest. The cause is an important one for the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society as some of the members have found themselves or a family member requiring the use of the regional hospital’s intensive care unit.

“We hope the community will get behind us and either donate to and/or attend Carefest,” said YKRS president Judy Dickson. “By doing so it makes sure the hospital has the best trauma equipment possible for patients.”

Carefest takes place Oct. 3 at the Yahk Kingsgate Community Hall and features a dinner, dance, silent and live auctions.

The Creston Community Band will be providing the musical entertainment.

There will be many other fundraising options with a raffle and the always fun money tree organized by Jeff and Theresa Vandergeest (to help sell tickets call them at 250-424-5118).

The Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society would also appreciate any donations to the cause (to donate or have an item picked up, call Lin Gracewood at 250-4246949 or Brian and Marcia Eddy at 250-424-

5597). Some additional hands and help are also needed for the dinner (to volunteer, contact Judy Dickson at 250-424-5580 ).

The East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s new ICU is to be commissioned in the spring of 2016 and will have six beds versus the present four beds. The current ICU is 94 square meters in size; the new facility is 796 square meters. This means that the care area per patient will be six times than it is now.

New skills through KES work program

Customized employment expands business community

I am 19 years old. I am an employee at Gin’s on Canyon.

Though I have Down syndrome, I was able to find employment through Kootenay Employment Services with its job coach program. When the boss of Gin’s on Canyon, Virginia Bergman, met me during our short interview, she hired me straight away.

Working at Gin’s means I have to be on my feet a lot, while working at a fast pace. I love working at Gin’s.

People there are very kind and respectful towards me. The hardest part is lifting heavy trays of plates and cups. I am working at it, though.

I have improved a lot from when I started in April. I work at least three hours a day. I start my shift at 11 a.m. and finish at 2 p.m.

I had two different job coaches.

One was my best friend Bree Olsen and my new one is Emily Caldwell. They have helped me at

work. KES has a program for people with disabilities to have a job coach and wage subsidy while they are learning the new skills of the job.

Working at Gin’s has taught me many new skills, like washing windows, clearing and cleaning tables, doing the bathrooms, polishing cutlery and even taking the drink orders. Soon I will be working all by myself. My hard work will pay off by being able to buy things I want, like a convertible! My work at Gin’s has brought me tips and being noticed for my hard work.

I hope to learn new skills like working with money and being a full waitress, but for now I am very happy and enjoy my days at Gin’s. I thank Gin and KES for this opportunity to work in my community. Being employed, to me, means gaining skills for future jobs and this makes my life more successful. Hard work always pays off in the end!

KOOTENAY EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

When Eileen Watt, a single grandmother from Creston, came to Kootenay Employment Services (KES) in June 2014, she was determined to become more financially self-reliant. She wanted to feel empowered and equipped to bring her dream of an art-based business to life.

Watt knew that she was taking on a challenge.

“Because of my disabilities, things are more difficult for me to comprehend,” she said.

“Things take longer for me to do and learn than the average person.”

Her hope was that self-employment would give her the freedom and flexibility to customize her work to suit her needs and talents. But trying to get her business started on her own hadn’t been working for Watt.

“It was really overwhelming by myself,” she said. “I needed the help to be able to do it.”

KES was eager to work with Watt. Developing customized employment and self-employment solutions is at the heart of a new approach to serving clients with disabilities. It is an approach that matches people’s unique strengths, interests and conditions with opportunities for meaningful work.

In some cases, KES teams up with local employers to create or customize a position. In other cases, KES works with entrepreneurial clients, like Watt, on self-employment strategies.

No matter the client or the job, the focus is on helping people to recognize and develop their knowledge, skills and confidence.

Today Watt’s business, Joyfilled Pix, is up and running. She takes spectacular photos of nature, skyscapes, flowers and energy orbs, and produces cards, calendars and prints that are for sale. Her work can be viewed and purchased at www.joyfilledpix.com, and Joyfilled Pix can also be found on Facebook.

Getting Joyfilled Pix off the ground has been a labour of love. Along the way, KES connected Watt with a wide range of supports. KES staff helped Watt to refine her business concept and gave training in business management, marketing and networking. Funding was accessed to purchase special glasses that lessen the impact of Watt’s disabilities. When possible, Watt was referred to nonKES resources, such as local Columbia Basin Alliance for Computer Literacy programming.

KES also provided Watt with a supportive job coach. Job coaches offer one-on-one help to make employment and self-employment work. For Watt, this meant finding a coach who could help with the IT aspects of the business.

“It has been huge because she has helped me learn about the technology,” Watt said.

The personalized assistance has made a real difference.

“It’s been nice to have someone support me step by step,” said Watt. “She is so positive and upbeat and gets all excited for me when I learn something new.”

So far, Watt’s self-employment strategy is working for her. She feels that she has realized her goal of starting a business that she can operate on her own terms.

“It feels amazing,” she said, “because I can see it getting as big as I want it to be, or as little as I want it to be.”

Joyfilled Pix is working for the community as well. Not only are customers loving Watt’s products, but the local economy is gaining something, too. Watt believes in shopping local and has made a point of partnering with other local businesses.

“I think it’s important to support local business, especially if I want local business to support me,” she said. “I used Imagine Ink for my calendars. For my sign we went to All Signs and they did really well. For my greeting cards, I have worked with Creston Card and Stationery.”

From her perspective, when people with disabilities have more disposable income, the local economy really wins.

“For people with disability, it can be hard to shop elsewhere or online,” she said.

Watt is just one of many KES clients with disabilities who have found their way to rewarding self-employment. She is full of encouragement for other valley residents with business ideas.

“Just believe in yourself enough to go and do it. I’ve done a lot and I’m having fun.”

It is a great pleasure for Creston Concert Society to again present the highly entertaining Quartetto Gelato as its 2015-2016 season opener on Sept. 29 at the New Life Christian Church. Its return performance is sure to be as energetic and engaging as when it first appeared over a decade ago.

For nearly two decades, this dazzling ensemble has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide with its exotic blend of musical

QG established itself as a dominant force on the music scene early in its career by winning the coveted title of NPR Performance Today’s debut artist of the year. The selection panel concluded the quartet was “an amazing ensemble that achieves the nearly impossible: they play salon music with real style and classical music with real precision; great chops and a commitment in all that they play.” In addition to being regularly heard on CBC and NPR radio, featured on the Hollywood soundtrack Only You and its 2007 Concert in Wine Country DVD being shown regularly on PBS, two CDs have literally been heard around the world, since they accompanied Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk during his NASA flight on board the space shuttle Columbia.

The quartet features Peter De Sotto, founding member of QG and a remarkable talent whose chameleon-like abilities allow him to perform on the violin not only as a seasoned classical violinist but also as a dazzling gypsy virtuoso. If that is not enough, the real surprise is his fabulous tenor voice, which ranges from South America to authentic Irish folk to the great romantic Italian songs and arias, including Turandot’s “Nessun Dorma”. A member of the Toronto Symphony for 11 years, De Sotto was voted musician of the year in 1999 by the Toronto Musicians’ Association.

Also on stage will be Alex Sevastian. Born in Minsk, Belarus, Sevastian began his studies on the accordion at the age of seven. He began his professional career in Moscow in 1996, performing with the Russian Radio Orchestra, with

Cellist Greg Gallagher is the fourth member of the quartet, replacing Liza McLellan on this tour. Gallagher made his professional debut as a soloist with the New Brunswick Symphony in 2005. Gallagher has his bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Western Ontario and is currently working as a teacher for the Sistema Toronto music program, as well as freelancing as a professional cellist in Toronto.

Quartetto Gelato performs 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the New Life Christian Church (1821 Elm Street), an alternate location is for this performance only, while new seats are being installed at the Prince Charles Theatre. Tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for students, avaialbe in advance at Creative Fix, Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Books, or $25/$12 at the door.

BILL GREEN 5. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program was established to address short-term problems, but there is no quick fix to most of our labour shortages.

The Green Party’s labour market strategy focuses on long-term solutions: education and skills training, a guaranteed livable income to provide everyone with an income above the poverty line, and bringing in foreign workers as future Canadians — not as temporary, vulnerable employees.

We will remove financial barriers to education, apprenticeships and skills training by eliminating tuition fees and capping student debt.

A guaranteed income will allow people to live and work in their home communities, even on minimum-wage jobs, which will ease staff shortages in tourism and service sectors.

Finally, Canada needs immigrants and their families who become permanent, valued contributors to Canadian society. The immigration process must be tailored to meet our labour needs.

6. The best way to address the uncertainties of climate change is to avoid causing more climate change. Canadian governments have so far failed to meet this challenge.

The Green Party’s bold climate action plan starts with goals informed by science. To avoid catastrophic climate change, we must begin to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dramatically, starting now.

Our plan to achieve this is built around carbon pricing — a predictable carbon price levied on industry at the point of extraction. All carbon fee revenue will be redistributed as a dividend, rewarding those who strive toward a low-carbon footprint.

Leading international energy companies are urging governments to establish carbon pricing systems. The Globe and Mail ranked the Green plan as the most economically efficient.

We are experiencing the effects of climate change even now and more severe effects are unavoidable. We must be prepared. The Green Party will invest $6.4 billion per year in green municipal infrastructure to support community resilience in the face of extreme weather events.

Liberals believe those who want to work in Canada should have a pathway to citizenship.

We will return the TFWP to its original purpose: filling jobs when qualified Canadians cannot be found and then complement it with employment programs.

More than half a million British Columbians face significant challenges because of limited literacy skills, whether it’s an inability to read the newspaper or a lack of understanding of important financial or health documents.

Literacy skills are vital to all British Columbians because they are a necessary part of everyday life and impact everything from healthcare to employment and economic status. Literacy is no longer just the ability to read or write, but encompasses a much wider scope of daily activities — including using technology, doing calculations, communicating verbally and in writing, and problem-solving.

This month, Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) are joining forces to raise funds and awareness about the importance of literacy with the fifth annual Reach a Reader campaign. The campaign will culminate with community leaders and volunteers hitting the streets across the Columbia Basin and Boundary to distribute special editions of local papers and collect donations in support of community-based literacy programs.

“Literacy skills are essential for a vibrant B.C. economy, so

addressing limited levels benefits everyone,” said CBAL executive director Ali Wassing. “We would encourage anyone who is affected by literacy issues to tap into the many resources and lit-

eracy programs available in their community.”

We will increase the labour market development agreement by $500 million annually to support regional job retention, waive employers’ EI premiums when they hire 18-24 year olds, support college co-op jobs, expand pre-apprenticeship training and create a three-year $300 million youth employment strategy aimed at creating 40,000 jobs each year.

Combining TFWP benefits with other employment strategies has longer-term value.

If you’re asking what I can do locally to mitigate problems, it could range from water level negotiations for the Columbia Basin Treaty, reinstating the federal Kootenay Lake fishery office or supporting wildfire programs. WAYNE STETSKI 5. In typical Harper fashion, the Conservative “fix” to the problem with the Temporary Foreign Worker Program did little to address the real issue. While we experienced serious issues with abuses of some foreign workers right here in the Kootenays, overall, the “solution” to the problem has made it very difficult for businesses in the area to get the workers they need and didn’t actually protect the foreign workers that are here.

I have spoken with numerous small business owners who are now struggling to get enough workers to keep their businesses open. We clearly need a new approach that meets the needs of both those seeking employment in Canada and the businesses that want to hire them.

6. As the former regional manager for the Kootenays responsible for fish and wildlife, ecosystems and BC Parks, I know the importance of healthy lakes and rivers to our environment, and our quality of life. The Harper Conservatives have gutted environmental legislation, 50 years in the making, and that is why internationally recognized environmental scientists like Dr. David Schindler are speaking out, asking voters to vote together to protect the environment.

Tom Mulcair is a recognized leader in the development of environmental legislation. As minister of environment in Quebec, he brought in the most progressive environmental legislation anywhere in North America. That’s the kind of environmental record I am happy to support.

DAVID WILKS 5. New measures under the low skilled worker program were imple-

mented in 2014 after abuses to the system were identified. These new rules are meant to ensure that Canadians have jobs first. These changes did, however, have a significant effect on communities in Kootenay-Columbia that are tourism based and cannot find enough local workers to fill the jobs. I will continue to meet with the minister to express the concerns of local businesses and work toward a solution.

6. Our government will continue to work with other countries from around the world to establish a fair and effective international climate agreement that includes meaningful and transparent commitments from all major emitters. Within Canada we have implemented a sector-by-sector approach and to date have regulated the transportation and electricity sectors. We have taken action to limit the growth of emissions on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

We have implemented strict new rules on emissions for coal-fired electricity plants and are the first country in the world to ban construction of traditional coal plants. I will work with local and regional partners such as the Columbia Basin Trust and support their Environment Strategic Plan, which includes five goals: water, ecosystems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental education and stewardship, and environmental capacity building to strengthen communities.
