Fair-ly helpful FALL FAIR: | Exhibitors are being asked to give a hand up to Kuu-us Crisis Society.

The Alberni District Fall Fair is four days of fun and activities highlighting myriad factions of the community. But there is also a fundraising aspect to the fair.

This year, the fair hopes to collect much-needed toiletry items for Kuu-us Crisis Services.

“Kuu-us tells us they are in desperate need of toiletry items in particular, so we

are asking all of our exhibitors to consider donating an item,” Fall Fair administrator Ann Siddall said.

This is the first year they are asking their exhibitors to get in on the fundraising. Siddall said they typically

get 300 people exhibiting everything from livestock to handmade, homemade and homegrown items.

“Even if we get 15 per cent of them, that’s significant.”

Items can be dropped off in the two giant red baskets at the fair office when exhibitors pick up their exhibitor tags.

Their names will then be put into a draw for a $50 gift certificate for Boston Pizza.

The Fall Fair

also collects food for the food bank.

Anyone bringing a non-perishable food donation to the gate for the first hour of the fair on Thursday, Sept. 10 will get in for free. “Last year we raised more than one tonne of nonperishable items,” Siddall said.

Losing their locks for Tour de Rock We have all been affected in one way or another by cancer —a mother, father, aunt, uncle, cousin, or friend. RBC has devoted some of its favourite faces of the Port Alberni branch to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock between Sept. 1–25.

The Tour de Rock is a 1,000-kilometre fundraising bike ride that law enforcement and media riders embark on in September, taking them from Port Alice at the north end of Vancouver Island all the way to Victoria over two weeks.

“Our goal, with your help, is to raise

$5,000,” branch manager Keith Schindler said.

If they raise $5,000 then Schindler, client advisor Sukh Krishan, financial advisor Eric Matheson and banking advisor Brent Williams will shave their heads during the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock in honour of the family members they have lost: mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Boston Pizza is hosting Miles for Mihai, for midIsland rider Mihai Ilioi—an RCMP constable in Nanaimo.

The restaurant is collecting sponsorships for $1 a mile.

By the time Ilioi finishes the ride, he will have cycled 2,479 training miles, and the ride itself is about 620 miles (1,000 kms).

Boston Pizza’s goal is $ 3,100 for 3,100 miles.

The Tour de Rock riders will stop in Port Alberni on Friday, Sept. 25 around lunchtime. That night Boston Pizza will host a Fun Family Night from 5:30–7:30 p.m. where people can have dinner with the riders and enjoy carnival games outside.

Joints make or break woodworking project

I

n last month’s Shop Talk column, we took a look at the proper way to prepare rough lumber for use in a project. If your material is not straight and square any joinery you attempt will likely be less than perfect.

Joinery is the art of fastening two pieces of wood together in a way that allows for the natural movement of the material while providing a strong connection between the two pieces that is able to resist the loads placed on it.

There are several classic methods that have been developed throughout history, have stood the test of time and not fundamentally changed. What has changed are the tools, hardware and adhesives that we use.

Methods such as dovetails, dowels, screws and mortise and tenon joints are almost as old as woodworking itself. In the past, this joinery was laid out by hand and cut with hand tools, requiring a great deal of skill. We now have a wide choice of powered machinery to cut these and that has made the process considerably easier to master.

The trick is to choose the best method of joinery for the project at hand and the most effective way to cut it. There are many tools and jigs out there on the market and some deliver on the promises they make and others fall somewhat short.

The dovetail joint is one of the few joints that will stay together without glue. It relies on wedge shaped pins and tails that create an interlocking joint along the ends of two boards such as the

constructed with manufactured sheet goods. The slot and biscuit provide a

larger glue surface between two pieces of material to be joined.

This system is poor

at providing positive alignment of the faces of the material as the fit is rather loose.

When used to glue up larger panels from individual boards, biscuits do not offer any advantage over a well prepared and glued butt joint.

Pocket screws are fast to install and their advantage is that they are easy to create and assemble on a job site. As the name suggests, a specialized screw is used so there is no waiting for glue to cure.

The downside of this method is that

it leaves behind an ugly elongated hole on the back of the material and without hold down clamps and a table, flush surfaces are difficult to achieve. There are plugs available to fill the holes but this method is best used for built-in casework and architectural details where the back will be hidden.

The Festool Domino is a system that uses a floating tenon.

Dovetails can be cut with hand tools but be sure to invest in quality layout and cutting tools for the purpose or you will likely be frustrated with the results.

A more modern alternative is to use one of the many router jigs on the market. The tradeoff is that router cut dovetails look mechanical because they have to be of a certain size to accommodate the bit that does the cutting.

Dovetail jigs come in a wide price range with the inexpensive models being very basic while the more expensive ones offer features that are well worth the added cost.

For joints with a large long grain glue area that do not have any end grain, a well prepared butt joint is more than sufficient.

Today’s modern wood glue will always be stronger than the wood around it.

When we encounter a joint where there isn’t enough glue surface for a strong joint we must create additional gluing area. Biscuits joinery has been around since the 1950s.

Technology improves age-old methods From / A3

A specialized cutter is used to cut oval holes in the parts to be joined and then a ‘domino’ is used when the joint is glued. This is a well designed system but is relatively complex, relies on proprietary supplies and is the most expensive option.

The mortise and tenon joint has a long history and is one of the most useful.

It can be cut easily using hand tools or there are a number of powered options as well. My preferred method is to cut them using the Leigh FMT Router Jig. I’ll take a closer look at this joint in an upcoming column.

The dowel joint is

perhaps one of the oldest methods used to join two pieces of wood. This joint is very easy to make: you simply drill a hole in both pieces, apply a little glue, insert a dowel and clamp. What presents more of a challenge is to locate the holes precisely.

I have tested and reviewed several dowel jigs and without a doubt, the best one on the market is the Dowelmax. It provides absolute alignment for perfectly smooth faces and is dead simple to use. It also creates the strongest of the joints we tested.

In 1956 a young 18-year old boy, Tony Vanschie, left his homeland of Holland and traveled to Canada with only two suitcases.

He ended up in the Fraser Valley, Agassiz to be exact and there he worked on a dairy farm, as farming is what he knew about from his homeland.

Vanschie only worked there for a year before he came to the Alberni Valley and went to work at the APD mill for six years.

He then went to work for a local roofer as an apprentice and then worked for Hayes Roong and was with them for 16 years before starting out on his own with Vanschie Roong a company that is still in business.

As Vanschie said, “Once I started my own business I never looked back.”

Pit bull propaganda a deadly proposition A Brighter Note

T

he popular online news site The Huffington Post just published an irresponsible series of articles and images promoting pit bulls as safe family dogs for their second annual “Pit Bull Week.”

During those seven days a 25-year-old woman was killed by her own beloved pit bull of 10 years, a 48-year-old woman was mauled to death by her neighbour’s pit bull on her way to the mailbox, a toddler was rushed to hospital in critical condition because of his family pit bull, and at least 10 other people were savagely attacked in the U.S. by pit bulls. None of these horrifying tragedies were covered by the Huffington Post.

To be fair, many media outlets didn’t publish these gruesome accounts.

Perhaps in part because of the ferocious backlash from the vocal minority every time a news item presents pit bulls as anything but a harmless dog full of waggles and licks.

The reason pit bulls get a bad rap is because they’ve earned it. Contrary to what the well funded pit bull advocacy camp likes to declare, the press is not to blame. They don’t make these wretched stories up.

There are more than 300 dog breeds worldwide and the American Kennel Club recognizes 167 of them, but the ones we hear about most in the media are by far the pit bulls, referring to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and their mixes with predominant pit bull characteristics.

The articles come from opposite ends of the spectrum: propaganda, such as what’s seen

on the Huffington Post regularly, and factual, such as the severe and deadly mauling incidents that have become so disturbingly common you rarely see them circulating on social media.

To clarify, I am a huge animal lover and I don’t blame these dogs for the problem they’ve become.

They are also victims and this was entirely human caused.

Pit bulls were bred to be exceptional fighter dogs, to bite down, clamp and shake, and to hold onto their victim

while they are being inflicted with physical pain themselves. They were never bred to be nanny dogs—that is an absolute myth that was debunked even by the pit bull advocacy group “BADRAP” which admitted promoting this belief was dangerous to children.

That retraction has been highly publicized, yet it is still repeated by pit bull advocates constantly.

Another alarming myth is that it’s all in how you raise them. Pit bulls that were reared from

puppyhood by good, responsible people who trained them to be gentle have still suddenly attacked, unprovoked and without warning after showing no prior signs of aggression.

It is genetics. Border Collies were bred to herd, retrievers to fetch, bloodhounds to be master smellers and pit bulls to be magnificent aggressors.

This is why despicable lowlifes use these powerful animals for their horrendous dog fighting rings. They don’t have to train them. Hundreds of years of inbred dog aggression gives them that instinct, and with their powerful jaws and muscular bodies they’re a force to be reckoned with.

I am not saying all pit bulls are going to attack, most won’t.

And I am not saying they are the only dangerous dog breeds, they aren’t. But the fact is, they only make up six per cent of the

dog population in the US, yet they are responsible for more fatal and disfiguring dog attacks on both humans and animals than all the other breeds combined. In the last seven years these pit bull attacks on people rose 773 per cent with the number of child.

I have written on this subject before, so I know what’s coming: an onslaught of hostility over my ignorance, and demands that I do my research. Believe me, I have. I’ve been reading up on this daily for the last four years and the more I learn, the more I support breed-specific legislation (BSL).

Anyone who truly loves pit bulls should support it as well.

Currently a million of them are euthanized every year in the U.S. If spaying and neutering is made mandatory and backyard breeding is outlawed, far fewer pit bulls would be born in the first place,

leading to far fewer of them dying as a result. And despite the condemnation that BSL’s intent is to kill pit bulls and remove them from their homes to be euthanized, that is simply not true. These pets are grandfathered.

The intention of BSL for pit bulls is to eliminate mauling injuries and deaths by the breed that inflicted the majority of severe and deadly attacks on humans and animals. It will require responsible dog ownership and hold these people accountable if they don’t abide by the reasonable laws implemented to keep the community safe.

More than 40 countries restrict pit bulls, and no countries except Canada and the U.S. even allow their importation. How brutal must the bloodbath get, and how high must the death toll rise before we stop this insanity?
