Meeting coming up regarding seniors’ housing complex

Youth comic strip contest now on for library card sign-up month

The conceptual plans of the northeast view of the proposed seniors’ lodge to be built in Rimbey.

The public will soon have a chance to have their say regarding a planned 80-room seniors’ housing complex in Rimbey estimated to cost around $17 million.

A public meeting to discuss the design of the 62,000 square-foot building is to be held at 5:30 tomorrow (Wed., Sept.

16) at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

A meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on that same day at Parkland Manor to discuss the plans with the residents.

“We made a promise over a year ago that we would meet with them,” said Mayor Rick Pankiw.

The mayor noted that a great deal of hard work, time and effort has gone into the design of the two-storey building. The building committee from Rimoka Housing Authority and representatives from Alberta Housing hired Berry Architecture from Red Deer to design

“The architects made the building fit perfectly with the shape of the lot,” Pankiw said. “At the end of the day we want to get it built as soon as possible for the residents of Rimbey,” he added.

Ponoka County purchased a land parcel of slightly more than eight acres for the project. Approximately 2.77 acres of land has been set aside as municipal reserve. A wet pond is to be built on this portion of land.

Paul McLauchlin, chairman of Rimoka Housing Board along with the building committee met with Mike Leathwood, assistant deputy minister of the housing division at

the Ministry of Seniors for the provincial government recently to discuss the project.

McLauchlin said the

meeting was positive and the title of the lot to be used for the new lodge will soon be transferred to the Alberta Seniors’ Housing.

He noted the access road to the housing complex is now construction ready.

Construction of the seniors’ facility is to begin this fall and the project is tentatively scheduled for completion in 18 months to two years.

Lacombe (September 4, 2015) – Parkland Regional Library is running a comic strip contest throughout the entire region for Library Card Sign-up Month this September.

The contest is for those aged 10 to 18. Participants can submit their original comic strip from September 4th to 25th for a chance to win a great prize that will help foster further creative projects. The grand prize is a Wacom Intuos Tablet. Also up for grabs is a set of Copic Markers. A panel of judges from the community of Lacombe will choose the top five submissions and public voting will take place on Facebook the week of October 5 to 9, 2015.

What do you get when you toss music, laughter, hugs and even a little dancing together in a crowded basement?

You get strangers becoming friends in the time span of a few minutes. You get that ‘good feeling.’ And, most importantly, you get what you had hoped for.

A really good party!

Well, that’s what happened to me last Saturday when, once again, against all odds, I went ahead with what has become my annual MS party/fundraiser.

It was supposed to be in the backyard. Actually, it’s always been in my backyard because of the vision.

I was getting ready for work one morning when I had ‘said vision.’

Always a cheerful, optimistic sort when sunlight bounces off my walls and my coffee is steamy hot and delicious, I had visualized such a party. There would

MS party/fundraiser because of the necessity of changing the venue, it made no difference.

People came to my front door, shaking off their umbrellas, and bringing their smiles and their energy.

And when my basement became so crowded no one could literally move and the musician had to be relegated to a tiny corner where people wouldn’t keep tripping over his equipment, my heart stood still, not in gratitude, but in terror.

“Oh, no,” I rallied at myself. “What have I done?” I can’t offer people chairs. I

can’t make sure they have a drink. I can’t be a proper hostess at all!

But, people, bless their hearts, obviously didn’t seem to need a proper hostess, but proceeded to do what everyone does best at a party.

Just have fun.

And so I picked up my youngest grandson, Jacob, who, at a year and a half, is still baby enough to let me wrap my arms around him, poured myself a delightful glass of bubbly red, and danced with him to the ageless sounds of rock ‘n roll.

And, finally, I started to

enjoy my own party.

It’s over now.

And, once again, we raised a few dollars for multiple sclerosis, a disease that has touched many of us, with fingers of dread and trepidation.

But mostly, we accomplished something else.

We reminded each other that the threads of friendship may get frayed and torn slightly, but only need a bit of mending now and then, to become as strong as ever.

And a party/fundraiser is an excellent mending tool!

Philosophical meaning attached to Rolex Oyster Standard Time

be laughter, there would be fun, and mostly there would be people filling my backyard with the energy that marks the difference between a really good party and a ‘so/so’ type party.

And because the dark cloud of multiple sclerosis has hovered over my family, not once, but twice, I was determined I would somehow find a silver lining to help not only us, but others who know all about that particular dark cloud.

A fundraiser. I would turn my party into a fundraiser.

One of the lovely blessings in my life is a sister who is quick to pick up my little mustard seeds of faith and help me nurture them into something wonderful.

So when I told her about my vision, she immediately came up with an idea of a silent auction.

Viola! The party/fundraiser became more than vision.

It became a reality.

However, this year it not only rained on my vision, it poured.

In fact, the weatherman did not predict a 60 per cent or a 70 per cent chance of rain.

He simply said, ‘rain.’

And rain it did.

But, still, in spite of my absolute terror that the rain would dissolve everyone’s desire to be one of the actors in my real life play of

I pack a notebook when I travel. During a few trips I tried bringing a small notebook-sized laptop, however, lugging around a computer proved to be counterproductive. I was quite fond of using a Hilroy notebook during my earlier adven-

tures and reverted back to that practice (I prefer either a red or grey colored cover).

Some of my old Hilroy notebooks that I took traveling, surfaced in my home when I was getting myself organized for a full-time class schedule at RDC. My turbid and forgotten travel thoughts were revisited at the kitchen counter — I was mostly terrified at my own existential ramblings that date back to my travels that I underwent five or more years ago.

In one of my travel logs, I kept mentioning the time of day it was when I began a new entry (the date was always recorded, too). This particular series of entries was written when I was in New York City circa St.

Patrick’s Day in 2010; I was with my friend Hobbes and his younger sister.

While I revisited some old memories through my old notebooks, I could not remember my reasoning for using the phrase ‘Rolex Standard Time’: the time of day always followed this phrase in every entry I made in my notebook about NYC. My notebooks were carefully re-hidden in the closet and it wasn’t until I was looking for a document in my storage locker that I determined the root of the ‘Rolex Standard Time’ phrase. I found a (fake) Rolex Submariner with some of my more precious belongings in storage. My old man had purchased the exquisite fake Swiss watch

in Thailand and gave it to me upon his return almost ten years ago. I had worn the watch during my NYC trip years later.

I suspected I wanted to offset my neck tattoos with some bling out of fear I may run into royalty or a reality television celebrity on Manhattan Island.

Since my storage locker discovery, I started wearing the fake Rolex my dad gave me. The watch has two important features. It looks real and it has a perpetual self-winding function. The inertia from my left arm magically ratchets an offset weight that keeps the mainspring wound up — this proves beneficial when I’m flailing my arms at three in the morning, listening to

Motörhead, and attempting to solve my existential crises that were recorded in my old travel notebooks.

Sun dials, hour glasses, watches, and clocks all may have linear symbolic meaning when compared to an individual’s walk through life on this planet. Much of my own worries were dissolved after I inserted a little personal philosophical meaning into my fake Rolex. There will always be another morning, another midday, and another evening. I find respite in the notion that if I keep in motion, my time will not stop — or at least my watch won’t stop ticking. (This entry was finished at Rolex Standard Time: seven minutes to seven).

The Lacombe County Assessment Review Board (ARB) is comprised of the SDAB members and hears and makes decisions on property assessment complaints. Last Wednesday was a day of packing up and hauling out bags of clothes as volunteers cleaned out the upstairs of the former Helping Hands second hand depot.

It was a sad day for the volunteers who had worked tirelessly for several years to keep the facility operational so those who truly needed helping hands would find assistance.

However, the building has been deemed unsafe by the

Once the inventory from the upstairs has been removed the building will be closed permanently and the utilities will be disconnected when the skateboard park is completed.

Interim CAO Donna Tona said the building where Helping Hands was located, (the former Scout Hall) should have been condemned years ago.

“Helping Hands should have never been put into a building that was unsafe,”

she said.

The building may be slated for demolition, as Tona is not sure what other options there are.

“I don’t think we qualify for a historical grant and, even if we did, I don’t think it (the building) would survive the move to Pas Ka Poo Park.”

Joan Fenwick and Hazel Parker who were hard at work packing clothes Wednesday said they planned to take the bags to the Co-op and contact Value Village to pick them up.

An annual fire and safety inspection of the building was completed on July 28 by public works director Rick Schmidt, municipal interim Michael Fitzsimmons, town foreman Bruce Newbury and Sgt. Kyle Koller from protective services.

The crew found several deficiencies within the building including black mold on the basement walls, non-functioning emergency lights and exits and combustible items surrounding the furnace.

“After completing my inspection of the building, it was my opinion that we needed to vacate all patrons and staff immediately. It is my personal and professional opinion that this building is unsafe for both clients and staff to be in it at any time.

It should be secured and further inspections by health and fire should be ordered,” said Newbury, in his report.

He noted support beams in the basement were either cut or removed.

“It appears that they were removed to make room for more items such as counters, toys, lamps and dishes. In my opinion, this is compromising the integrity of the structure in itself, which is a serious and dangerous situation for the clients and staff entering the basement at any given time.”

Newbury said the smell inside the building was also cause for concern.

In his draft report, Koller noted the building did not appear structurally sound with a cracked foundation.

The Scout Hall which housed Helping Hands is a town owned building. The town pays the utilities and is responsible for upkeep and maintenance.

Bentley 2015 horticulture show entries down

A colorful exhibit and the wonderful aroma of sweet peas greeted those who entered the horticulture bench show area inside the Bentley curling rink during Bentley fair week. The display was available thanks to some exhibitors who went out of their way to enter a number of entries.

A severe hailstorm that hit Bentley and part of the area just two weeks before the annual Bentley fair, and rain the morning the horticulture bench show entries were being accepted, may have been why entries were down this year.

Results of the major prizewinners are as follows: Best Rose (sponsored

by Marg Martin) and Best Flower of Show (Judge's Choice) were won by Penny Seiling from Eckville.

Floral Table Centerpiece (sponsored by Wilson's Funeral Chapel) winner was Merlyn and Eileen Wilson form Bentley.

Theme Floral Arrangement (sponsored by Drost Seed Potatoes - Jan and

Grada Drost) was won by Faye Poffenroth from Bentley.

There was no basket arrangements entered this year.

Best Rhubarb (sponsored by Gayle & Leonard Skjonsberg) was won by Cathy Pike from Bentley.

“We watched a film of the game at lunch on Thursday and it was pretty quiet in the room.”

The two teams had been running close throughout the game, with the Spartans in the lead for much of the time. However, Breton closed the gap and then pulled ahead for a dramatic close finish of 61 – 58.

The score in the game, held Sept. 9 in Breton, came somewhat as a surprise to some of the Spartans who had never experienced a loss.

“We watched a film of the game at lunch on Thursday and it was pretty quiet in the room,” said head coach Bill Bramfield.

“But, we can’t dwell on it.

Sometimes you can learn a lot from a loss. We are fairly refocused.”

He said Breton was excited to win against the Spartans because of the winning streak they have experienced the last few years.

“I take that as a compliment,” he said.

The Spartans go up against Holy Redeemer School from Edson next Thursday in Rimbey at 4:30 p.m.

“They are a strong team,” said Bramfield. “It should be a good game.”

Skateboard park almost done

Skateboarders in and around Rimbey taken heart.

The skateboard park is almost done.

Ian Butler from Newline Skateparks said work is going well and he expects the park to be completed by Sept. 25.

“It has taken a bit longer than planned, but we are still on schedule,” he said. “It is going to be a really, really fun park.”

Presently workers from Newline Skateparks are busy completing shot Crete and transitions which involves curved features, he said.

“Next week we will be starting on

flats,” he noted, adding that all the dots are being connected.

The park, which is a Kinsmen project, is estimated to cost $458,000.

The Town of Rimbey and Ponoka County has each donated $40,000 for the park and $50,000 has come from the Lions Club. Canline-Gazelle’s Group of Companies donated $3,000 and the town contributed the land. The Kinsmen has also received smaller donations and gifts in kind for the project.

The Kinsmen Club borrowed the remainder of the funding so the project could begin this year.

Central Alberta Buccaneers lose against Monarchs in semi-finals The Central Alberta Buccaneers entered the semi-finals on August 29 in a match against the Monarchs in Fort McMurray (the #2 seeded team in the AFL).

The Monarchs had handed the Bucs one of their two regular season losses, with a score of 33-9.

While the two teams went toe-to-toe for much of the first quarter, the pirates eventually struggled to hold the line against the high-powered Monarchs. The Buccaneer defense (one of the strongest in the AFL) had its hands full trying to contain the power running of the McMurray running backs.

When on the offensive side of the ball, Buc quarterbacks had little time in the pocket; as a result, running and passing plays were slow to develop. The ball was punted often, which lead to poor field position, which lead to Monarch scoring. The final score was 43-7. Despite playing from behind for the majority of the game, the Bucs “showed a lot of character and stuck together no matter what,” said team captain, Mark Fay. The Monarchs travel to Calgary, September 12, to battle the Gators for the AFL championship.

When the Bucs began their 2015 season, they did so with one goal in mind: win the AFL title. While they did fall short of that goal, there were many positives to take away from 2015. “The level of accountability and competition was a lot higher this year. We have gone away from the mentality of being a second tier team and began fostering a championship mindset,” said #21 Brett Lapointe. In addition to establish-

ing a new, winning attitude, the Buccaneers have expanded their roster in terms of numbers and talent; these new Bucs will add to the team’s core, establishing a strong foundation to build upon in 2016. Buccaneer veteran cornerback, Tylor Johnson, said, “I feel very optimistic going into next season.

Our mistakes will be addressed and I know most of us have already started to hit the gym. We didn’t achieve what we wanted, but I know that will fuel the fire.” Additionally, the Bucs will be building off one of its most successful seasons in franchise history. A regular season record of 6-2 and a semi-final berth can hopefully be a launch pad for success in 2016.

The offseason for 2016 began immediately after the final whistle in Fort McMurray – the Buccaneer coaching staff and executive are in the process of recruiting new players as well as new team sponsors and partnerships.

The Bucs would like to thank the numerous people and organizations that made 2015 possible. Volunteers donated their time and energy so that game days ran smoothly; sponsorship support and investment covered many of the team’s expenses.

The Whisker Rescue Society and the Line of Hope were fantastic partners and co-organizers of key community events; the Lacombe Athletic Park Association was a huge help all season and ensured we had a place to call home; and, most importantly, the fans showed outstanding support and Buccaneer pride.

Ila was born in Mantario, Saskatchewan in 1935. As a young girl, the family moved to a farm at Harmattan, Alberta. Ila began her schooling there, riding a horse to the school. She finished her high school at the Canadian Nazarene College in Red Deer. After her schooling, Ila worked at the Alberta Treasury Branch in Red Deer where she met Jack Steeves. They were united in marriage in 1956 and began their married life at a farm north of Rimbey, eventually settling in the Hoadley area where together they raised four sons and one daughter. Ila enjoyed keeping busy at many farm activities. She grew a big garden where weeds were not tolerated. She enjoyed quilting and other needlework. She loved spending time surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Ila was a volunteer cook at Wilderness Camp and earned the nickname, “Cooky”. Summers were spent camping and trail riding. In later years, the horses were replaced by ATV’s. She was thrilled when she got her own. Everyone was always welcome in their home, and Ila would often feed a houseful of people at a moment’s notice. Her grandchildren loved to spend time at grandma’s house. She was a great daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandma, great grandma…and a wonderful example to all!

Ila will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her beloved husband, Jack; her three sons: Merv (Karen) Steeves of Hoadley; Gene (Lynn) Steeves of Lacombe; and Laverne (Deb) Steeves also of Hoadley; her daughter, Sheila (Reg) McIlwain of Lacombe; and her daughter-in-law, Sue (Dave) Stankevich of Bluffton; as well as numerous cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two brothers, Bob (Neva) Strand of Keremeos, B.C.; and Elvin (Wilma) Strand of Creston, B.C.; and three sisters: Ruth Munro of Olds; Gladys Eckenswiller of Red Deer; and Clara (Roy) Mitchell also of Olds; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many close friends.

Ila was predeceased by her parents, Emma Louise and George Strand; her son, Darrell in 2008; and one brother, Don Strand.

A Public Funeral Service in Celebration of Ila’s Life was held at the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church, Hoadley on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Budd and Pastor Barry Klassen officiating. A Family Interment Service preceded the funeral in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley at 11:00 a.m. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Ila’s Memory may be made directly to the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church ~ Building and Expansion Fund, Box 1, Site 7, R.R. 2, Bluffton, Alberta T0C 0M0; or to the charity of one’s choice. Luceille Elaine Andersen was born at the Wainwright Hospital on June 26, 1932 to Richard and Lula Deyell.

She was the fourth child born of five and grew up on the farm five miles from town.

Luceille passed away at the age of 83 at the Rimbey Long Term Care Hospital on Friday September 04, 2015 with family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ole Andersen, her brothers Edwin and Cliff, her sister Jean, her son Barry and her grandson Trevor Smith. She leaves behind sons Victor Taylor, Randy Taylor (Lori), daughters Linda Brunsdale, Dawn (Kevin Dalton) and Diane Howorko (Rick Angel). Also left to mourn is her sister Eula Hicox, sister-in-law Betty Deyell and thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and former son-in-law, Emmett Reed. The family wishes to make special mention of the staff at Rimbey Longterm Care Centre for their exceptional care for our Mom and Grandmother over the last three years. A funeral service for the late Luceille Andersen will be conducted on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM from the Grace United Church, Wainwright with Reverend Pamela Milton officiating. Interment will follow in the Wainwright Cemetery. If so desired the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta.
