Tragedy, trauma in a small town The weekend following a double homicide, Blairmore hosts a WHL tournament. What to expect?
I

got into my truck, pulled out of the Townsman parking lot just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon and made my way east. I knew where I was heading but I wasn’t sure what to expect. Just two days earlier, the small mountain town of Blairmore rocked by the tragic reality of a double-murder. Two-year-old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and her 27-year-old father Terry Blanchette — gone. It’s the type of reality no community should ever be challenged with. So, what should have been a normal “day at the office” for me as the Kootenay Ice met the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Crowsnest Pass for Western Hockey League pre-season play, was going to be anything but that.

Candidates debate on aboriginal issues set for Wednesday All 5 Kootenay-Columbia candidates confirmed for Cranbrook event BARRY COULTE R
For the first time, an election candidates forum focussing on aboriginal issues has been organized for Cranbrook this week, and is going ahead with the confirmed attendance of all five Kootenay-Columbia candidates. The first All Candidates Debate on Aboriginal Issues is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at the Ktunaxa Nation Gymnasium in Cranbrook, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is being organized by two individuals, Rosemary Phillips and Joyce Green. “[Aboriginal and First Nations] issues are quite distinct issues from the mainstream,” Phillips said. “So there is a real need for the candidates to address that.”

A candlelight vigil was organized in Cranbrook’s Rotary Park Saturday, Sept. 19, in honour of Terry Blanchette and his daughter Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette, who were both killed in the Crowsnest Pass community of Blairmore, Alberta, last week. The event was organized by Deanna Louis, who was born and raised in Vancouver’s downtown east side, and who herself is the mother of a murdered child. Louis, speaking to those assembled, said she is doing this because there needs to be more support for families who have ex-

perienced tragedies like this. Louis has organized a petition calling for more support for the families of victims, as well as life sentences and stiffer penalties for the perpetrators, in order to help protect children and families. Fellow organizer Arlene McCrory’s mother was murdered when she was just three months old, and her aunt was one of the victims of the Robert Pickton murders. She said the vigil was organized to honor Hailey and other children who lost their lives, and to offer the community a chance to grieve in a healthy way.
