SAIL set for the future Surrey Connect, the district’s online learning program, has been transformed into the Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning (SAIL). SAIL sailacademy.ca, which has its base on the second floor of the district education centre, has launched new Grade 8 SAIL Academies based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM and STEMX for gifted students), Arts (STEAM) and Athletics, Performing Arts and Excellence Academy (APAX). All SAIL programs incorporate Makerspace; a shared space for students to work together while sharing tools, resources and knowledge. Makerspaces promote peer learning and knowledge sharing, as well as creativity, problem solving, innovation and more. The Grade 8 academies feature a blended learning environment; combining home online learning with teacher-directed, face-to-face classes three to four days a week. Under the umbrella of SAIL, Surrey Connect will continue to offer its traditional online courses for grades 10–12 with enhanced curriculum. Surrey Connect offers cross-enrolled (with a mainstream school), as well as fulltime grade 8-12 options. SAIL’s K–7 school, located at

The approach provides parents the opportunity to take a more active role in their child’s education by working with teachers to determine suitable gradeappropriate materials and strategies for online work from home. The academies offer a special focus on creating, inventing and tinkering in the Makerspace environment. Through inquiry and project-based learning in an interdisciplinary program, students explore real world topics that foster independent
learning and critical thought. “Our goal is to engage our students’ inherent passion for learning,” says principal Peter Johnston. “The SAIL programs encourage learning that develops creative thought, independence and critical thinking alongside like-minded students in a blended learning environment.”
