NEW NATIONAL INDEX SHOWS . . .

Rent is pricey in Parksville More than half of renters here spend more than 30% of income AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

A new Canadian Rental Housing Index shows more than half of renters in Parksville spend more than 30 per cent of their income on rent. The first ever national index published by a national group of housing and financial organizations including groups like the B.C. NonProfit Housing Association and Vancity credit union breaks down data for more than four million rental households, covering 30 per cent of all housing. “The number one pocketbook issue for Canadians is housing affordability, and that pocketbook is getting squeezed,” said Tony Roy, chief executive officer of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association, calling for more government action. The index breaks Statistics Canada data on 800 communities into an interactive online map which includes Parksville and the Regional District of Nanaimo but not Qualicum Beach. It shows Parksville and the RDN with 51 and 53 per cent respectively, spending more than 30 per cent on accommodation, a threshold Statistics Canada uses to determine housing affordability. Nationally 40 per cent of renters spend more than 30 per cent. Parksville mayor Marc Lefebvre previously said “availability” is the biggest problem with rental accommodations in the city. “Affordable housing is a tough nut to crack,” he said, stopping short of connecting the rental availability and cost to economic opportunity in the city. Urn stolen from cemetery CandaCe Wu

news@pqbnews.com

In what police are calling “a sick crime of opportunity” an urn worth $2,500 was stolen from a Parksville cemetery. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman confirmed it was empty. On July 20 a brass urn decorated with three dolphins was pried out of its concrete housing underneath a memorial bench on the grounds of Yates Funeral Service. As no leads have come forward, Mounties are calling on the public for help. “Police do not feel it is random,” Foreman told The NEWS in an e-mail Tuesday. “It was presumably a sick crime of opportunity due to

the fact that it was expensive metal that was fairly easily removed.” Foreman said the urn was the only item stolen at Yates Funeral Service on July 20 and nothing else was damaged on the grounds. He said the urn is “priceless to the family of the deceased in which it was dedicated.” Oceanside RCMP are seeking public assistance in identifying who is responsible for this crime with the ultimate goal of being able to return the missing urn to the family. Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477.

FEDERAL ELECTION ISSUE: THE NATIONAL DEBT

Is there a fix for $616B debt? Courtenay-Alberni candidates share their views on this growing problem JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

How many water systems could be upgraded, how many more surgeries performed, how many things could a federal government do with an extra $26 billion a year in its coffers? Canada’s national debt sits at roughly $616 billion, according to the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation (CTF). In the year 2000, it was roughly $550 billion. In 1990, it was about $336 billion. While the national debt — and what the parties propose to do about it — isn’t likely to be considered a sexy issue for TV news or Twitter, the CTF says it believes it’s something Canadian voters should consider when they mark their ballot in the federal election on Oct. 19. “It’s important because I don’t think a lot of people realize we spent $26 billion on interest payments on the debt last year,” said CTF federal director Aaron Wudrick. “The sooner we pay off the debt the sooner we will be able to use the interest money on other priorities.” John Duncan is the Conservative candidate in the Courtenay-Alberni riding that includes Parksville Qualicum Beach. He has been an MP in the ruling party for a decade. “Prior to the financial meltdown of 2008, the Conservative government paid down on the debt, we then responded to the greatest financial meltdown since the Great Depression and now we have returned to a balanced budget,” Duncan told The NEWS. “We have come a long way to make sure our economy is protected by a balanced budget so that we are ready to face whatever comes our way. Canada posted a $5 billion surplus for the first three months of this fiscal year, which ensures that we are on track to balance the budget this year.” New Democractic Party candidate Gord Johns said Prime Minister Ste-

phen Harper has chosen $60 billion in tax giveaways for big corporations and millions more in tax breaks for CEOs and subsidies to oil companies. Johns said Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has chosen to continue Harper’s tax giveaways. “New Democrats have different priorities — we’re going to make corporations pay their fair share instead of saddling future generations with more debt,” said Johns. “(NDP Leader) Tom Mulcair’s plans to stimulate the economy by investing in $15 a day childcare, breaking up gridlock with major investments in public transit and infrastructure and lifting thousands of seniors out of poverty are fully-costed and do not rely on expanding the national debt.” Duncan said he doesn’t believe that strategy will work. “It makes no sense to propose major new spending, which the NDP and Liberals have proposed to put us back into deficit, raise taxes and add to our national debt,” said Duncan. Green Party candidate Glenn Sollitt said his party is committed to fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets, with an aim to reducing the national debt. “The Green Party Platform is founded upon a five-year, fully-costed and reviewed budget that targets debt reduction of over $30 billion,” said Sollitt. “Specifically, debt reduction will be obtained through measures including elimination of some industrial tax credits and subsidies, closing tax haven loopholes, increasing large corporate taxes and reducing government advertising. I support a disciplined schedule to gradually pay down the debt while maintaining public services and programs that meet immediate social and environmental needs.” Liberal Party candidate Carrie Powell-Davidson said her party’s team has what it takes to tackle the growing national debt. “The Liberal Party has the right team, made up of the right people to take on the vacuum that has been left by the Conservative government,” said Powell-Davidson.

PHOTO SUBMITTED BY THE CANADIAN TAXPAYERS FEDERATION

The national debt now totals more than $616 billion, considerably higher than when this photo of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s debt clock was taken outside the Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

“There is a reason why Canada has a federal government; it is not to be an idle observer of the passing scene but to do something about it when there are problems. This is how a Liberal government will approach the massive debt Canada has accumulated over the years, a problem that requires an immediate, real plan for change.” Barbra Biley is the Marxist-Leninist Party candidate in Courtenay-Alberni and she suggested additional ways to raise revenue and direct the

economy include public control of the wholesale sector and financial institutions. “Government debt exists because it serves the politics of paying the rich,” said Biley. “To suggest government does not have enough revenue to finance its investments and must borrow from private individuals and institutions covers up the reality that government refuses to build a public economic base from which it can realize revenue to meet necessary investments.”

OCEANSIDE WOMEN’S BUSINESS NETWORK

200 women expected to attend Oct. 3 event The Beehive event will have networking, business training and a trade fair

The Oceanside Women’s Business Network (OWBN) is hosting the inaugural Beehive networking event on October 3. According to a news release issued by OWBN, it’s expected to draw around 200 business women from the central Vancouver Island region and beyond. It will be held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. The Beehive event consists of networking, business training, and a trade fair, all in a fun, facilitated format to create a successful environment for lead generation. Attendees will gain the confidence and know-how to get sales leads and turn them into revenue. Sue Clement, of Success Coaching in Vancouver, will facilitate a group-networking activity, and provide valuable training, at the event. She will share her best networking strategies to help women deepen their business relationships. Attendees will learn how to ask for referrals, and follow up on the

sales leads they receive that day. “Women get so disillusioned with networking because they don’t see results,” said Clement. “This Beehive event delivers a proven formula to teach women how to properly ask for referrals, and set them up for future networking success.” Registrants don’t have to be a member of a women’s business network to attend. “Networking groups focus on relationships and referrals at a local level,” explained Barb Ashcroft, OWBN president. “We want to help our members, and other business women, to expand and get exposure in other markets.” OWBN is working with the Nanaimo WBN, and the Comox Valley WBN to promote the event. They have also received some monetary support from the Regional District of Nanaimo, who recognizes the ladies’ attempts to help build economic improvements in the area. For more information about this women’s business event, and to buy tickets, visit the OWBN website at www.OWBN. ca/Beehive. —Submitted By Oceanside Women’s Business Network

Hot off their re-launch of the airshow this summer, The Parksville Qualicum Aero Club is hosting its annual COPA for Kids flights Oct. 3. The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) event offers kids age eight to 17 a free 20-minute flight, along with a talk about the theory of flight and a classic pre-flight aircraft inspection. “A number of the club’s experienced pilots will be on hand to give the kids a memorable day at the airport,” said organizer Paul Connor. Organized by COPA volunteers, last year’s event started amid a bit of a storm, but the weather cleared nicely for the 26 children who got to enjoy a great day and flight around Qualicum Beach. In small groups the young people attended local helicopter pilot Greg Waltz’s ground school and were taken for a flight by pilots Matt St. Arnaud, Jim Hannibal and Connor, followed by hot dogs and stories. More than 150 chapters across the country take part in the annual program, which

He confirmed one of the offenses is alleged to have occurred in the Nahmint River in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. The accused’s first appearance in Port Alberni court is slated for Oct. 14. Under section 49(1) of the Wildlife Act, all angling guides are required to hold a licence which must be renewed annually. “The purpose of this is to aid in monitoring angling,” Bates explained. “They’re required to report the number of angling days and their catches.” Bates said an investigation was launched into the accused’s river fishing behaviour after being tipped off nearly two years ago.

“Affordable housing is a tough nut to crack,” he said, stopping short of connecting the rental availability and cost to economic opportunity in the city. He said he wants to work with senior levels of government in the future to tackle the issue. The average rent in Parksville is $871 or $900 across the RDN, slightly above the $848 national average. Across the RDN a high 25 per cent of renters also spend more than half their income on rent,

“We’re trying to encourage people who hire (fishing) guides to ask for their licence,” said Bates, advising people to “be leery of paying in cash.” On a first conviction, Bates said a person can be fined up to $100,000 and one year in jail or both for unlicensed guiding. On each subsequent conviction, Bates said a person can be fined a minimum of $2,000 and a maximum of $200,000 and two years in jail or both. He confirmed a person who unknowingly hires an unlicensed guide would not face charges. None of the allegations have been proven in a court of law.

The index calls this “a crisis level of spending.” While the index highlights well known affordability issues in major cities, it points to a problem in many small communities. “The health of all communities is dependent on affordable rental housing, and the Canadian Rental Housing Index underscores the need for new investments,” said Linda Morris, Vancity senior vice-president.

Changing laws

I

t really is a shame how governments get stuck on past practices, seemingly unable to react to new realities. Bylaws, and laws in general, are in place for good reason. However, they can also become outdated, foolish or even downright discriminatory. There was a time when women couldn’t vote. There was a time and place when slavery was legal. These were laws that needed to be changed. It should not have to take street marches or civil war to change outdated bylaws in Vancouver Island communities. And sometimes — imagine this — exceptions should be made to deal with unforeseen circumstances. Reference reporter Candace Wu’s story on page 5 Tuesday. Does anyone believe it’s a good idea that a perfectly good $80,000 Nanoose Bay cottage should be thrown into the dump because of some Regional District of Nanaimo bylaw? This kind of exception-to-the-rule talk makes some bureaucrats nervous. They treat bylaws like Moses brought them down from the mountain. (Actually, considering how often those 10 Commandments are broken every minute of the day, these bylaws are treated with more respect than those stone tablets.) Perhaps more accurately, bureaucrats and the weaker politicians who follow the lead of staff without question, make every move with liability and precedent in mind. Yes, insurance companies and lawyers do rule the world. This kind of logical, practical, thinking-on-your-feet kind of governing is not likely to come from city, town or regional district staff. And perhaps it shouldn’t. There is something to be said for consistency and a black-andwhite approach by bureaucrats. This kind of leadership needs to come from the people elected to lead municipal staff. Sadly, we currently do not have that kind of leadership in municipalities here. Too often, smart, experienced, practical people like RDN chair Joe Stanhope and Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre defer to staff. The voters of this region did not send people to council and board chambers to be yes men and women. They believed in these people, put their X beside the names of candidates they believed would be good leaders, good stewards of the community. It’s time for municipal politicians in these parts to lead, not defer. — Editorial by John Harding

DumbfounDeD by climate change anD water issues A few days back I was reading The NEWS and was dumbfounded by the mayor and council and some other regional director[s] scoffing at climate changes and the steadily decreasing water levels and drought and Level 4 restrictions most of us had to endure and are still enduring. The drought is still on and aquifer levels only receive five per cent of rainfall after a slow trickle-down effect and sometimes takes over 130 years to recharge and/or flush through. Our tax dollars were recently committed to a “water study plan” that could and should be revealed to us to consider the numbers and predicted continuing droughts over the next many years. Some of us have been paying property tax surcharges on the Arrowsmith Dam and not seen a drop of that water. This has certainly been the worst I’ve seen in the backcountry for dryness and nonexistent creek flows over the past few years, each getting incrementally worse. Here is the weird thing to come out of that meeting and today’s current events... people are demanding that we take in more refugees from overseas BUT are unwilling to share water with their neighbours, and they consider that their power-washing and car washing and lawn-watering is a cultural right in Qualicum Beach/Chartwell and turn a blind eye to those in need of clean clear water. Some people on council in Qualicum Beach need to give their heads a shake, they are also continually selling off city owned properties for revenue needs instead of using these properties for affordable housing

this election about important issues

A Sept. 8 letter to editor by Valerie Axford claims citizens are wanting “Change for the sake of change.” I agree voters should think very carefully before voting. Nowhere in Canada’s Constitution does it refer to any political party, rather to Members of Parliament elected to represent their constituents. So what should we vote for? How about an MP who: • Will actively ensure proportional representation is the new way of ensuring all votes count in Canada. • Will represent the wishes of his/her constituents — rather than one who is whipped to support every single word uttered by the party leader. • Will reinstate veterans affairs programs. • Will work to stop the bombing in the Middle East and restore our Canadian role as peacekeepers instead of war mongers. • Will repeal Bill C-51 and abolish omnibus bills altogether. • Will put the wishes of Canadians ahead

of their own egos and join forces to be true opposition to stop Prime Minister Stephen Harper in his decimating of Canada. I refer to decimating Canada because (among other things) Harper signed the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), Canada-China in September 2012 with President Hu of China. It was ratified in 2014, despite the fact the First Nations challenge to the treaty was before the Federal Court of Appeal. Brenda Sayers led the Hupacasath First Nation of 300 people in the only court challenge against the wholesale sellout of Canada’s sovereignty to the People’s Republic of China. I believe this agreement simply means that if Canada amends any municipal, provincial or federal law that the Chinese do not agree with, we Canadians have to compensate the Chinese and for the next 30 years. So please do your homework. This election is far from being about change for the sake of change. It is about defending and restoring our democracy and our role on the world stage. The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association (PGOSA) is one of the city’s “best kept secrets,” according to new vice-president of the organization, Rob Jonas. “One of the best things I did when I moved here was join,” said Jonas, who relocated from Vancouver to Parksville a few years ago. Jonas said through the 1,100-person membership he’s met lots of new people, joined sports teams like slow pitch and integrated into Parksville with ease. “I’m a huge advocate of PGOSA and would highly recommend it,” he said. “When I first moved here I didn’t know a single person, I had no family and no friends — I just came here on a wing and a prayer.” PGOSA is one of the largest seniors sports associations on Vancouver Island offering an array of activities including: RV trips, pickleball, hockey, hiking, bocce and singles groups to name a few. It is open to people age 55 and older. Annual membership fees are just $10. This Tuesday, Sept. 22 PGOSA will be hosting a meet and greet at Oceanside Place from 9-11:30 a.m. in conjunction with the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Active Aging Week. You’ll be able to liaise with existing members, ask questions and see what the organization has to offer (for more on PGOSA visit www.pgosa.org/ index.htm). Active Aging Week Sept. 20-26 is an annual RDN event promoting the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle as you get older. Read more of this story: www.pqbnews.com

SCHOLARSHIP: The timing of a $5,000 scholarship from Oceanside’s Pieter de Reuver Foundation couldn’t have been better for Coombs resident Alicyn Fleischmann, above centre, who began her third year in Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Bachelor of Science in Nursing program on Sept. 8. Fleischmann learned she had won the Pieter de Reuver Foundation Award of Excellence in the early summer, as she struggled with the idea of working full-time while also attending to family issues that were consuming her time. Fleischmann had saved for university studies since she began working at Coomb’s Country Market at age 13. The Pieter de Reuver Foundation Award of Excellence is awarded to a Parksville Qualicum Beach student in recognition of academic achievement and their positive involvement in the community and demonstration of leadership. More than 345 VIU students have benefited from the support of the Pieter de Reuver Foundation since 2009, with more than 100 more expected to receive awards in the coming year. SUNDAY AT TOSH

Pianist praised on four continents She appears regularly as soloist with many of the world’s prominent orchestras

Pianist Sara Davis Buechner brings a lifetime of international awards and touring experience when she performs Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at The Old School House (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach. According to a news release from TOSH, Buechner has been praised on four continents as a musician of “intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess” (New York Times), “fascinating and astounding virtuosity” (Philippine Star), and “thoughtful artistry in the full service of music” (Washington Post). In her 20s, she was the winner of a bouquet of prizes at the world’s great piano competitions — Reine Elisabeth of Belgium, Leeds, Salzburg, Sydney and Vienna; the gold medal of the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and as a bronze medal at the 1986 Tschaikowsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Buechner enjoys a vibrant international performance and recording career. With an active repertoire of

over 100 piano concertos, she appears regularly as soloist with many of the world’s prominent orchestras: New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Saint Louis, San Francisco, Montréal, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria and numerous others. Buechner’s performs in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl; and she enjoys wide success throughout Asia where she tours annually. Buechner continues to record prolifically, including new music and commissions from prominent composers of our time such as Larry Bell, Dorothy Chang, Dick Hyman, Henry Martin, Jared Miller and Yukiko Nishimura. She is one of the few concert pianists to actively perform piano scores to silent movies such as Ben-Hur and Battleship Potemkin. Buechner has toured extensively with the Mark Morris Dance Group, and collaborates often with Vancouver dancemime artist Yayoi Hirano. Appearances on radio include several U.S. profiles, as well as CBC’s Westcoast Performance and Richardson’s Roundup. Sara Davis Buechner is a former faculty member of New York University, and has presented lectures and masterclasses worldwide, notably at the Royal

SEPT. 30 IN QUALICUM BEACH

Open house at the Commons PHOTO SUBMITTED BY SOS

On Sept. 30 the Qualicum Commons will be holding an open house celebration which will provide the public with an opportunity to see what services the centre has to offer.

The former Qualicum Beach Elementary School is being put to good use. There will be an open house event called the Qualicum Commons Celebration on Sept. 30 from 3-5 p.m. Lissa Alexander, marketing coordinator for the Society of Organized Services, said the SOS

was one of the first groups to sign onto using the old school building to provide services in Qualicum Beach, and she’s thrilled that there are now a number of other service providers in the building. The SOS has been open in Parksville since 1968, providing programs and services for families, adults, seniors and children.

The non-profit society started offering some of its programs from Qualicum Commons in February, and continues to expand programming to that location. In September. the SOS’s Seniors Are Talking Program will be expanding to Qualicum Beach. See THINGS, page A20

Things are happening at the Commons

continued from page a17

During the Qualicum Commons Celebration the SOS will be providing snacks, and kids can play with bubbles, a water table and get temporary tattoos. There will also be information available about the adult and seniors programs, Alexander said. When the elementary school closed, people were concerned with what would happen to the building, she said. “I think it’s great that there are a number of things now happening (in the building).” The SOS had a grand opening in April celebrating their expansion, but this celebration will include everyone in the building. Cathy MacKenzie, recreation programmer for the RDN, said the Children’s Discovery Centre will be offering Munchkinland for the children and other services will be offered: dancing demonstrations, first aid and defibrillator demonstrations, and much more. “It’s a great opportunity for people to see what’s happening in the building,” she said. The Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs Society trains dogs at the building, MacKenzie said. The RDN, SOS, School District 69 Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP), Building Learning Together, Children’s Discovery Centre, Qualicum Beach School of Dance, Pacific Care Child and Family Enrichment Society, Charlotte Crowley and the Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs Society will be sharing information and demonstrations at the open house. Qualicum Commons is located at 744 Primrose St.

Learn more about our biosphere

It’s finally here — the first community course that tells all about the UNESCO biosphere region in your backyard. Developed by the research team at the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI), this engaging course will be launched on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Milner Gardens. MABRRI staff and student researchers will guide participants through a workshop that includes mini lectures, fun activities, a ‘world café’ style discussion and stunning visuals. Established in 2000, Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region is part of an international network of 651 UNESCO biosphere reserves worldwide. The biosphere stretches from Nanoose Bay to Qualicum and extends from Mount Arrowsmith into the Salish Sea. “Our goal is to help build a sustainable future in the region by connecting people and nature through research and education,” explains Dr. Pam Shaw, Director of Research at MABRRI. To register for the course, please call 1-866-734-6252 and provide the course number: MGWM 010. Cost is $5 for Milner members and $15 for non-members. Space is limited. — Submitted by MABRRI

Don’t know 14%

• A kiosk in town would be good.

• Staffing info services for members on the beach allows parking and spectacular location.

Regardless of what you do:

• You need to be open all year round at the beach. This is a more high profile location with parking.

• Maybe at the entrance from highway to Qualicum as well as at the beachfront.

• Visitors will shop more uptown if there is a presence in the downtown core.

Given the realities of the Qualicum Beach Chamber and VIC the ideal situation would be:

• Yes, as long as the VIC can be maintained at the beach.

• The functions of the two offices are very different. Is it time to give up the tourism function if it is costing too much and concentrate on business functions.

• Downtown is totally inconvenient for tourism information.

• Reviewing things is always a good decision.

Do you think it is a good leadership decision for the Board to consider consolidating operations to one physical venue?

The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce also received numerous comments to our 2015 survey. Here are a few of the more salient suggestions. If you would like a copy of the verbatim responses or have any questions or concerns about this member survey, contact chamber@qualicum.bc.ca.

• Be fiscally responsible.

• Personally I think the chamber should have a more direct contact with all businesses, touching base directly may prompt more to participate. Sell the virtues and strength of a group being beneficial to all businesses that seems to be missing in my mind.

• Having a pull-out where new billboard signs are, would be more noticeable and more facilitated.

• Thank you for helping promote our community and its businesses. We appreciate all you do.

Is there anything more you would like to communicate to the Chamber of Commerce at this time?

• A very visible well signed office in town would be beneficial as it ensures the visitors actually have an opportunity to shop our town.

• Downtown does not work for hotels/motels etc. VIC affords a marketing showcase opportunity for all.

• 20 surveyed commented, “None.”

What (if any) impact would this move have on your business? Please explain:

• Avoiding financial drain is important to any organization and will only support sustainability of the organization.

• Because we are a small community with vast areas outside it is imperative to promote every business - not just those in town.

Do you think that such a change would be a positive change for the organization as a whole?

ECHO PLAYERS PRESENTS – “MERRY CHRISTMAS, GEORGE BAILEY” December 17th – December 31st The 1946 movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of the most popular films in American cinema – particularly during the Christmas Season. In 1949 Lux Radio Theater created a wonderful radio play of this story, which, like the movie, starred James Stewart and Donna Reed. In 2002, this heartwarming story was adapted into a staged version of the radio play. Entitled “Merry Christmas, George Bailey”, this production takes the audience into the recording studio of Lux Radio Theater as the cast bring this timeless classic to life for their radio audiences. It is complete with all the sound effects and commercial breaks, and is a Christmas event not to be missed. For more information www.echoplayers.ca, call 250.752.3522, or email info@echoplayers.ca

ECHO PLAYERS PRESENTS – “MERRY CHRISTMAS, GEORGE BAILEY” December 17th – December 31st The 1946 movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of the most popular films in American cinema – particularly during the Christmas Season.

Knox Church hosts fair 11th annual community event draws big crowds

Knox United Church hosts its 11th annual Fall Fair this Saturday, Sept. 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the church grounds at 345 Pym St. in Parksville. The community event, which has brought together thousands of people in its decade-plus run, is the largest fundraiser each year for Knox United, which provides facilities and support to a wide range of service providers in the local community. The day will feature a kids zone, live entertainment, shopping and, of course, food — beginning the popular early-riser pancake breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m. Homemade shortcake and tea will be served beginning at 10 a.m, and the lunch concession of burgers, hot dogs and vegetarian options will fire up at 10:30 a.m. More than 200 volunteers have been working diligently

to get everything ready for the event. The sales booths, inside and out, will open at 8 a.m. Friends, neighbours, families and members of the Knox congregation have been gathering and donating a multitude of intriguing items to be sold at the Fair in the huge garage sale. Offerings include a multitude of household collectibles and treasures, small furniture, sports equipment, kids’ and women’s clothing, jewellery and accessories, linens, books, toys, Christmas decorations and crafts; all at incredible bargain prices. The silent auction, quality corner, plant sale, home baking, Cookie Walk and farmfresh produce are all back by popular demand. Enjoy free admission and free parking at nearby Ballenas Secondary School, plus a free shuttle service from the school to the church. Free on-site parking is available for those with handicapped parking signs and parents with children requiring car seats. Knox strives to be an envi-

Organizers encourage visitors to bring their own shopping bags whenever possible and consider maintaining a scent-free zone. Funds raised at this Annual Fall Fair help Knox respond to the needs of the local and global community; by offering low cost or free rental of its facility to community groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Rainbows; by providing services to the whole community with programs such as Care Home Worship Services, Grief Support Group and Healing Ministry, and by donating goods and funds to Oceanside groups and beyond including First United Church (Vancouver), Manna Homeless Society, Salvation Army and SOS. More than a thousand motorcycles of every make, model, size, and colour are expected to gather at Little Qualicum Falls Saturday morning for the 31st Annual Port Alberni Toy Run. Riders will depart Little Qualicum Falls beginning at noon and blast into the Alberni Valley, bringing thousands of toys for needy children at Christmas, and tens of thousands of dollars for children’s programs and family events throughout the year.

After a ceremony at Little Qualicum Falls to remember fallen riders, the Alberni Black Powder Club will fire its cannon at noon to start Vancouver Island’s largest motorcycle event. Motorcycles will travel westbound along Highway 4, past Cameron Lake and through Cathedral Grove into Port Alberni, ending at Glenwood Centre around 1 p.m. “What makes this Toy Run unique are the thousands of people who line the route to cheer the riders, holding up signs thanking them for helping T:5” the children in the Alberni Valley and west

coast communities,” Port Alberni Toy Run chairman David Wiwchar said. “Since 1984, the Toy Run has raised almost $2 million for local children’s charities, and the people of Port Alberni really appreciate that.” Once at Glenwood Centre, there are games and events for children and families, as well as events for the hundreds of riders who come from throughout B.C., Alberta, and the Pacific Northwest to attend the popular annual event. — Submitted by Alberni Toy Run committee

His heart had said “enough and he was ready to go with his Lord. Predeceased by his wife, Joyce, in 2009, his survivors include his sister, Ailene, his daughters, Marion, Victoria (Will), Janine (Dave), sons Glenn (Rita) and James (Debbie), grandchildren, Alissa, Michael, Nikki, Bryan, Landon, Vanessa, Christina, Tammy and Leanne, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ted was born in Winnipeg, met Joyce when he was only 13 and they were married at 19. Ted took on many roles in his life, from mechanic to carpenter, and even hair stylist, becoming President of the Manitoba Hairdressers. Whatever Ted took on, he always jumped in with both feet and he could always be counted on whenever family and friends needed anything renovated or repaired. Ted was a founding member of the Dashwood Fire Dept., was involved with Echo Players/Village Theatre, was past President of the Craig Heritage Park & Museum, and a volunteer at SOS. Ted had a wry sense of humor and was often referred to as a “character. He ‘lived’ to sing and dance and he and Joyce enjoyed many wonderful years square dancing. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at St. Stephen’s United Church, at the top of Village Way in Qualicum Beach, on Friday, October 2nd, at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to express our deep gratitude for the wonderful staff at The Gardens for their loving, compassionate ways in which they cared for Ted.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that anyone wishing to pay tribute to Ted’s memory, please give to a charity of your own choosing, and may God bless you.

The SepTember ClaSSiC is in the final day of the three-day event at Oceanside Place. Early Wednesday morning, the Parksville Panters took on the Vancouver Masters in the 75+ division.

The Bayside Racquets Club is about to open up another season of Squash at the Quality Inn Bayside Resort on September 22. Once they kick off another year of league play, the Bayside Racquets Club will host an open house on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. for anyone interested in coming to check out the game of squash. “We just want to get the word out there,” club member Stuart Kirk said. “We had our AGM not that long ago and we’ve decided that it’d be a great idea to try and let the pubic know where we are and all the fun we’re having here.” There are two indoor squash courts inside the Quality Inn Bayside Resort on Dogwood Street in Parksville. With the Bayside Racquets Club having been around for the better part of 20 years, the game of squash has been a staple at the Bayside and the club is always excited to welcome new members. “There might not be a lot of people who know we’re here,” Kirk said. “Both young and old, it doesn’t really matter what your age. If you’ve got a racket and a pair of gym shoes, you could come on out and give it a go.” “Not only do we have a league that we play in but there’s two courts here that can be used for anyone who wants to play.” Membership in the league goes for $60, most of which goes towards insurance through the B.C. Squash Association, where in the event of an injury, a participant can make a claim through B.C. Squash thanks to the league fee. See SquaSh, page A38

Generals have another chance at Buccaneers T yson Taylor

sports@pqbnews.com

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals head to the Nanaimo Ice Centre looking for their first win of the season tonight against the Nanaimo Buccaneers. Playing their second straight game against the Bucs, the Generals will look to put a win on the board after they played to a 3-3 tie this past weekend in front of 800-plus fans at Oceanside Place in Parksville. “We were very pleased with the turnout we had,” general manager Rob Gaudreault said. “We’ve got great fans here in the Oceanside area and it real-

ly showed how excited the fans were to see this team in action last weekend. Hopefully we can give them something to be excited about every time we step on the ice and it will keep them coming back every home game we have.” In their first game last weekend against the Buccaneers, it was the Generals outshooting 49-27. The Generals also played a disciplined game, heading to the penalty kill only once the entire game. The power play was a different story, where the Generals had five chances with the man advantage, managing to cash in once out of those five times. But

it was two short-handed goals from the Bucs’ Trent Bell that sent the Gens reeling early on.

“Yeah that was tough,” Generals captain Chandler Bruyckere said. “Giving up those two short-

handed goals was something you don’t hope to see when you’re on the power play but it was great to see us keep our heads through it. We managed to put it aside and kept on grinding away and we kept the pressure on for the rest of the game. There were definitely some nerves out there for us but we settled it down and found the game we wanted to play. We just wanted that win and couldn’t quite get it.” There has been a noticeable improvement through the pre-season and the first two regular season games from the first year players suiting up for the Generals. “It’s a nice thing to have,” Kirk said. “We have about 35 players in our league right now and we go from September through to March. It’s great because you can get some exercise and enjoy yourself without having to battle the elements outdoors.” Along with membership, there’s a discounted price to the Quality Inn fitness facilities, which include a gym, hot tub and swimming pool. “It’s really a great option,” Kirk said. “It gives you the chance to use the great facility they’ve got there and have the squash courts there to use if you feel like it as well.” “We’ve been fortunate to have the facility to use for our league for years and it’s nice to see the numbers coming back year after year.” If you’re interested in checking it out, or being a part of the league, come on down to the Bayside Resort on Thursday, Sept. 24. The VIU Mariners golf team got off to a good start with their season, finishing fourth in the UBC Okanagan Invitational tournament this past week, thanks in large part to local golfer Kyler Bourgeault. Bourgeault, from Qualicum Beach, was Vancouver Island University’s top golf-

In a season where the Mariners could potentially earn a berth in the 2016 Canadian University/College Championships at Morningstar Golf Course, there’s plenty on the line for Bourgeault and the team, having the chance to finish the season with a tournament in their backyard. “It’s a big motivator,”

Bourgeault said. “We just have to take it one tournament at a time and not try to get too far ahead of ourselves.” “We know that we’re a good team and we’re going to be competitive in every tournament we’re in but we just need to keep building and getting better every time we get out there.”

The air conditioning worked over time as we tucked into a warm salad – well, it was by the time it was served! Respect for fellow campers, prompted a click of the AC off switch after lights out. Day Three: Lillooet to Vernon features open highway and the chance to open up the throttle. A further reminder holding your iPhone in outstretched hand to get a signal from the camp Wi-Fi! We also had mobile Wi-Fi aboard, which worked well on the road.
