PARKSVILLE QUALICUM BEACH LIFE

Fall Edition

I

t always stirs something in me when I hear stories about our community from back in the day.

Auren’s article on a heritage, converted barn house hearkens back to when large acreages and farms blanketed the area. When a good portion of the residents worked in mills and gathered at a select few places. People drove horse and buggies and delivered milk in glass jars. We are so far from that today. Linda’s story about the Parksville-Qualicum Aero Club begins on some pasture land where the Qualicum Airport now sits. How wonderful it is to see how far that Club has come and it was a real pleasure to attend their very interesting Air Show in July. In my article on the wondrous wood artists Francois and Galen Mongeau, Francois took me back to when the local artists rallied together to keep the Old School House open, now known as TOSH, to create an arts centre for residents and tourists to enjoy. We also have food enthusiast Mandolyn Jonasson from Island SodaWorks who offers a refreshing column on “un-cooking” and Linda Tenney continues her thought provoking “Just Sayin’” column with the importance of staying curious. I also caught up with the incredible local artist MONK for the Q&A and learned some very interesting and inspiring things about her, and enjoyed a few good laughs. I hope you take some joy in reading about the unique people and places in our community this Fall, and let your mind wander with the writers as they take you on a journey to the past and back into the present.

Life in the Barn PRESERVING A FAMILY TREASURE The large barn at the Mant farm in Qualicum Beach was built nearly 100 years ago, back when horse and buggies were the main form of transportation. FALL 2015

10

“There’s a picture of my father-in-law delivering milk in a horse and buggy,” says Richard Stewart, who lives in a giant 10,000 sq. ft converted barn on the Mant farm.

Story by Auren Ruvinsky. Photography by Brian Argyle

The original five acres of the Mant property were purchased for $50, and in 1920 the barn was built by patriarch Henry “Hank” Mant’s parents. Today 99-year-old Henry still lives on the farm in the converted barn with his wife Lynn, daughter Tamara, her husband Richard Stewart their and children Peyton and Molly. >>>

>>> Born on the farm in 1916, Henry’s history is tied with the region. He even personally cleared the route for what became Mant Road, which leads from the farm directly into town. It originally went right through downtown to where the soccer fields are today. “The farm itself used to start at the airport and go right into town and from Rupert (road) to just over the tracks,” says Richard. “My in-laws have been piecing it off for the last 50 years.” “We used to supply all the milk for Parksville and Qualicum Beach,” says Tamara who described the farm as a hive of activity when she was growing up. “I used to watch my mom out there in her Cadillac chasing the mushroom pickers. I didn’t know what she was doing, I thought she was just out for a drive.” As the main dairy in the region in its heyday, the farm was one of the major industries in the much more rural community of the time. “All the local guys my age worked in here when they were young,” says Richard who works at Harris GM in Parksville and frequently runs into people whose first job was at his house. The Mants were one of the first families to buy property from an early realtor named Harry Fullerton, confirmed Netanja Waddell from the Qualicum Beach Museum. The Mant property was also known as a gathering place for young men who worked in the local saw mills, she added, referencing Brad Wylie’s book, Qualicum Beach: a History, available from the museum. The farm originally encompassed 200 acres and the barn was a central feature, with the two upper floors used as hay lofts and the dairy on the ground floor.

A NEW PURPOSE

174 CORFIELD STREET

Today, the family grow and sell flowers on the remaining five acres, but are down to what they describe as a “hobby farm,” a collection of animals including horses, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens.

PARKSVILLE CORFIELD PLAZA

Converted in 1997, the modern house retains the ground floor as a giant storage and work space, with most of the living space on the middle floor. There are a couple of rooms at one end of the >>> top floor, but it is mostly one huge finished, wide open, unused space.

Richard is “putting a new country rock band together right now to play in all the local spots.” >>> Richard says they “want to develop more fun space,” with plans to open up a giant self-contained master suite in the unused space, complete with large private balconies cut into the barn roof. Working with the large space allowed for things like a spacious common area, and an entryway between the two separate living units, which gives the elder Mants privacy and quiet away from the children and grandchildren.

THE KING AND QUEEN The bright, open, residential space includes 20-foot ceilings in the kitchen-dining area and a large deck the family uses constantly through the summer. While Henry and Lynn still live in the barn-house, Richard and Tamara, who have been married 15 years, moved back into the house from Parksville with their children about a year ago, to help maintain the animals and property.

As a musician, Richard says they also think of their farm as “where rock ‘n roll meets country, with motorcycles and Cadillacs.” And to that end,

“You name the event, whether its one of the galas, or the balls that are going on, the king and queen are there,” he explains. The nickname The king draws on Stewart’s past performances of Elvis songs, continuing his father’s tradition. The queen nickname is also fitting for Tamara. “She was the head cheerleader at Ballenas,” Richard says. “It’s perfect, I played football, we’re the football player and the cheerleader. Everybody refers to us as the king and the queen.” Tamara, who has a BA in psychology and worked as an LPN nurse, also had 10 years in the auto industry, giving the couple lots of common ground. While mom Lynn jokes she’s a newcomer, only being there 43 years, the family is happy to have deep roots, and Tamara says, “We’re never selling, how many families have an opportunity to have something like this in their family?” And so after nearly 100 years, the Mant farm is still very much a family home. “At the end of the day, no matter what else is happening, we cook a big diner and everyone is together,” says Richard. Photos: pages 10&11, from left, Tamara Stewart sits on the step of her family’s historic converted barn. Right, An old photo from when the barn was used for hay and dairy. Page 13, from left, Richard and Tamara Stewart with their children, Molly and Peyton, and Peyton’s girlfriend, Sam Jackson. Inset right, Henry Mant. Bottom, a side view of the house.

FALL 2015

Asked what they most appreciate about farm life, Richard lit up. “My wife loves all the animals here; she’s like Snow White, she walks outside and every creature comes a runnin’,” he says, indicating little birds landing on his shoulders.

The couple is heavily involved in both the Parksville and Qualicum Beach Chambers of Commerce and love to attend big social events.

Share-Cuterie {Charcuterie}

Pronounced "shar-kyoo-ter-ee"

Spagnia

Need some inspiration for assembling the ultimate charcuterie board? Here are some tricks (and a bit of science) to getting it right.

•

Start with a great serving piece – make sure it’s big enough to fit all the ingredients on without looking crowded.

•

Include flavours and textures that compliment each other. You want an assortment from all the flavour groups: salty, sweet, sour, bitter and savoury. The combination of these flavours enhances each bite.

•

Have at least 8 options on the board, and include extras like pickles and dates that act as palate cleansers and sweetness between different meats.

LOCO 4 LOCAL Fermented Zucchini Salsa

Guest Columnist MANDOLYN JONASSON

Grate them giant summer squashes (zucchini, marrow, patty pan, etc) reserving a large one (about the diameter of the jars you’ll be using), and cut that one into “rounds”. Grate some peppers (I like a mix of jalapeno, padrons, and the baby peppers). Grate some onions and garlic. Like cilantro? Add it here. Like carrots? Add them too! Needs something? Add it! Now, mix everything in a bowl and salt it (the type of salt is of utmost importance here, sea salt or Himalayan pink salt only). salt to taste...it should taste salty, but not disgustingly or overly so....just a little saltier than you’d like to eat it at.

Mix the salt and mixture and taste again. Need a dash more salt? Perfect. Now, allow the salsa to “sweat” while you make sure the jars are really clean. Pack the jars with about 2 inches of headspace, and place a zucchini “round” at the top to keep all the floaty bits under the liquid (brine). Weigh the zucchini “round” down with a shot glass or boiled river rock if necessary to keep it under the liquid, and finger tighten the lids on. Write a loving message on every jar and place in an overflow bin on the counter, away from direct heat, out of the sun, and in a fairly temperature stable area. After about 24-48 hours, tap on sides of jar to check for fermentation activity (bubbles). It’s “done” when you like it (see how easy that is!) Usually, anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.

Food is Love

The secret to un-cooking for Oasis, I was absolutely thrilled. “Finally!” I thought, I have the perfect, attentive audience (that’s you, dear reader), to wax poetically about all the reasons preparing food is the very best way you can ensure your family, friends, and community are all cared for; and really, how can anyone not like something that so often includes wine!

Vintage Veggies In cooking (or un-cooking) there have always been new and difficult-to-procure ingredients: truffles, saffron flowers, goji berries, eye of newt, what-have you that the cookbooks and food gurus say you MUST use for some very good reason that will always escape me….but the way I like to show my love and gratitude for our Earth, (and the wonderful people on it!) is by celebrating lowimpact, high-yield “vintage veggies” and edibles that grow abundantly in season with very little depletion of our soil, or human intervention, and there are few vegetables better suited to sustainable living then the humble (but up-and-coming “it kid” in the vegetable world), Zucchini! Admittedly, the zucchini has a pretty dull history in the Canadian recipe books, associated

most with chocolate cake and as a “filler” vegetable for vegetable stews. It’s popularity has grown as more people are using it to make fast and easy lowcarb noodles and I’m seeing some (p)interest with it as a replacement for potatoes in fritters and chips (both are delicious!) but in all of these recipes, the zucchini must be fresh… so what do you do when you just want a break from eating zucchini, but your garden overflows with it?

Ferment It! Fermenting is the oldest form of food preservation, and actually imbues the food with active and beneficial bacteria, whilst bringing out some incomparably delicious flavours, and, as you’ll see here, it can be really easy once you get the hang of it. As with all fermented recipes, you’re really setting yourself up for failure if you don’t buy local ingredients. The spraying, transport, and cold storage used by most grocers can (and does) upset the balance of a healthy ferment and you’re left behind with wasted mouldy yuckiness. Fermenting imported food CAN be done, (I’d advise higher salinity and a slower ferment) but if you have the option, why risk it?

FALL 2015

By Mandolyn Jonasson I was fortunate enough to have lived in Europe as well as North and West Africa throughout my twenties, and the one thing that connected all of these cultures, these experiences, and made the most impact on me, was this undisputed commonality that “food is love”, and that, Dinners, are Sacred Rituals in Community building…(yes, I did choose that arbitrary capitalization; No, I don’t think I’m J.D. Salinger.) Upon my return, I wanted to bring some of those experiences home into my Canadian life. For me, cooking, (or un-cooking, which seems to be more what I do as a fermenter, “zymurgist”, if you’re talking to the scholarly crowd) became more than a way to get “fuel” for my body, (un) cooking had evolved to encompass sharing with my community, feeding the people you love. I eschewed the potluck for the chance to show my friends and family all the things I could never express in words. My offering, my thank you, my “giving back”, which comes in the form of Food, made with, grown with, prepared with, infused with, love. So, when I was asked to write a guest column

Wings of Flight a tale of the PQAC

Story and photos by Linda Matteson-Reynolds

C

ommunity spirit, volunteer dedication and a bunch of enthusiastic guys who love to fly makes the ParksvilleQualicum Aero Club (PQAC) a haven for local aviators.

(CAT4) as it is today. These ardent aviators and volunteers continue in that role to ensure the airport remains a key asset for the ParksvilleQualicum Beach community.

It all started in the late ‘50s, when founding member Don McMillan and four others, headed out to a roughened airstrip pasture in north Qualicum that had been donated to the town by the local Rotary Club. They were exploring the possibility of forming a local aviation club.

The newly expanded PQAC clubhouse at Unit 9 Ravensbourne Lane adjoins a spacious hangar where they keep their club-owned Cessna 172M.

Despite a shaky and turbulent history, and tense negotiations with the City of Qualicum to improve the conditions at the airport, the Club was at last incorporated in 1968. “This airport and club evolved from a great deal of diplomacy and much cajoling,” states McMillan.

>>>

FALL 2015

As a BC registered non-profit society, the PQAC currently has over 60 active members, many who have stuck it out over the years and have played a pivotal role in the development of the Qualicum Beach Airport

Current President Fred Evoy extends a community welcome to local aviators: “Whether you’re a seasoned pilot, a rookie pilot or someone bitten by all things aviation, PQAC is the place to be in Oceanside. We have members with varied interests and experience in aviation. All are friendly and enjoy the camaraderie of their common interest in airplanes and aviation. Whether hanging out in the Member’s Lounge or flying off to enjoy the scenery of this fantastic Island in the Pacific, what better way to have fun,” states Evoy.

>>> The mission statement of the Club is to promote and encourage general aviation in the Parksville – Qualicum area. Encouraging youth in undertaking aviation as a career or as a recreational activity through education and exposure to aviation is an important part of the Club’s role.

PQAC AND THE AIR SHOW After a respite of three years due to lack of funding and volunteer power, an enthusiastic crowd attended the July 11th Air Show with featured aerobatic performer “Super” Dave Matheson and his Schayden MX2 show plane. Large donations from local business and sponsorship made this year’s event possible. “The objective is to specifically have a great air show of course, but to also highlight the importance of the Qualicum Beach Airport (CAT4)”, said Paul Connor, a member of the Parksville Qualicum Aero Club Executive. The Air Show runs solely on volunteer power. Eighty to 100 well-organized men and women feed, park, control air traffic and organize special events for up to 4,000 guests with the ultimate goal of making the day run in an orderly fashion, while adhering to strict safety procedures.

PQAC’S INVOLVEMENT IN COPA FOR KIDS COPA for Kids Aviation Program provides a free-of-charge motivational aviation experience for young people eight – 17 years of age throughout Canada. Pilots from PQAC go one-on-one with the participants showing them what aviation is all about while allowing them to experience the science of flight right in the cockpit. A short ground-school session precedes the flight and the pilot explains the various parts of an aircraft, provides a safety briefing and conducts an aircraft walk around all before take off. Once in the air, the participants are able to observe all the facets of flight from startup to takeoff, to cruising and landing and finally, the taxiing and proper shutting down of the aircraft. The total experience time averages one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours and the wondrous panoramic views over Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanoose Bay, the kids won’t soon forget. “Judging by the quick response to the flight instructor’s questions, there were budding pilots in our midst,” stated Jim Hannibal – chief instructor and director for the program, after a recent COPA for Kids day.

Begin your coastal journey at the Salish Market, where the powerful stories of the art created with “insight” of the Salish Sea unfold. Discover west coast expression in all mediums: pottery, wood, glass, metal, culinary, fabric, paint, literature, photography, body care and jewellery.

ANGEL FLIGHT GIVING WINGS TO PEOPLE WITH CANCER PQAC pilot Paul Conner is a member of Angel Flight of British Columbia which is a charitable, non-profit organization providing air transportation for cancer patients needing medical services at hospitals and centralized medical care facilities in Vancouver and Victoria. This vital program utilizes a network of volunteer private pilots and aircraft owners, as well as “ground crew” support. Angel Flight works with families, doctors, hospital personnel, and social workers to arrange for flights. Angel Flight is financially supported primarily by local pilots who fly the missions (by donating the use of their airplanes and operating expenses) and by contributions from individuals, service clubs, social and religious groups and corporations. There is never a fee of any kind to the patient and volunteer pilots such as Connor pay the total costs. PQAC is always looking to increase their membership and you don’t have to be a pilot or hold a license to do so. Membership is open to anyone over 16 years of age and the only requirement is that you have a love of aviation and airplanes and a yearning to share your passion with others. President Fred Evoy expresses the club’s point of view best. “We welcome visitors and members alike, with a friendly smile and always a kind word. Drop by and introduce yourself to any of our members. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did.” Information can be obtained from their website www.pqac.ca

JUST SAYIN’

Column and photo by Linda Tenney

Stay curious. And why is the ocean salty? I’ve always been curious. My mother tells stories of non-stop questions as soon as I could ask them. “What’s that?” “What’s this?” And the everannoying, “Why?” Kids are like that. Natural sponges sopping up every bit of information they can; filling their young brains with knowledge and experience. To this day, my mind is still filled with a flurry of questions. New ones, and those I revisit if still unanswered. Questions I sometimes voice, but more often quietly think to myself. A friend recently asked, “What are you thinking about? You’ve drifted.” “I was just wondering ... why is the ocean salty?”

I’m not sure how many times I tried tying my laces before achieving success. Likely countless! But success is like that. There’s generally a ‘backstory’ of hard work and determination that leads to the end result, and the ultimate achievement is pure magic. Albert Einstein once said, “I know quite certainly that I myself have no special talent; curiosity, obsession and dogged endurance, combined with self-criticism, have brought me to my ideas.”

enriched and fulfilled life. Curiosity keeps our minds active. It opens up a world of opportunity and possibility. It adds excitement and adventure to our lives. It’s just plain fun, and never boring! An active mind, is a young mind, no matter what your age. And who knows, your next question could lead to the next great invention! And why is the ocean salty? I know you’re curious! It’s the magic of chemistry. The most accepted version is that rainwater mixes with airborne particles of carbon dioxide, making it slightly acidic. As the rain falls, rocks are eroded and minerals dissolved releasing sodium and chloride ions into rivers and streams. The ions eventually reach our oceans, mingle and become sodium chloride ... otherwise known as salt. Chemicals released from hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, and submarine volcanoes contribute to the salinity in a similar way, but it’s primarily the interaction between rainfall and rocks that has made the ocean salty over thousands and thousands of years.

I remember asking how to tie my shoes when I was three or four. I asked the same question for weeks. Asking, observing, trying it myself. Then one morning, with the early light filtering through the sheer curtains of our living room, I sat cross-legged under a tent of sheets draped over an ironing board and carefully made a series of loops in the lace of one shoe. I DID IT! One red PF Flyer running shoe was tied! I laughed ‘til it hurt. Individually, staying curious is important to an

In sequence, it’s curiosity, questions and answers that propel ideas from first inklings to final invention, or re-invention. It’s a powerful evolutionary trio that has lead us through centuries of technological, socioeconomic and cultural shift. The Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and early 19th century, and our more recent Digital Revolution, are explosive periods of development that took us from Samuel Morse’s telegraph machine in 1836 to Apple’s first iPhone in 2007, to name only two inventions. And our curiosity is behind it all. A life filled with curiosity is pure magic! ~

WOMEN WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Michelle Stilwell MLA Parksville Qualicum

It’s a Great Time to be an Entrepreneurial Woman in B.C.! I would like to recognize and honour the achievements of our incredible, and numerous, local business women. I am consistently impressed with women who tap into their entrepreneurial spirit and make a difference in their communities. Further, these inspiring women take time to empower, support and facilitate success for other women! In 2014, B.C. women accounted for almost 37 per cent of all business owners, placing us above the national average. We want to continue to be leaders in the country when it comes to supporting women in business. With this in mind, Premier Clark created the Premier’s Women’s Economic Council. The council is a group of exceptional women who are leaders from a variety of economic sectors and regions. They offer advice on strategies and potential actions to create economic opportunities for women which helps create jobs and strengthen B.C.’s economy. Women of the Oceanside Hospice

Hospice Serves People of All Ages Oceanside Hospice Society is celebrating 25 years of providing hospice, palliative care and bereavement support in the communities of Oceanside. Executive Director, Lynn Wood says “Our hospice team is blessed to have some amazing, compassionate and wonderfully caring women who have made a long term commitment to providing excellence in hospice care and service.”

Says Julie: “By recently travelling the intimate end of life journey with a close friend and the support of Oceanside Hospice, I gained a deeper life experience. What I know is that we can all make a difference in someone else’s life — the physical, spiritual and emotional passage is a “path that we’ll all walk someday” —there is no need to walk this path alone!

Pat Trozzo, has taken on many different volunteer roles over a 20 year period. “Hospice has taught me that the greatest gift you can give anyone is to truly listen.”

Diane notes the importance of hospice helping people better understand the complexities and even richness around dying, death and grief. We at hospice are here to help and we encourage you to reach out to us at any time. A good way to start that process of normalizing end of life, is to engage in life planning. Hospice offers Advanced Care Planning for all ages.

Shirley Wray, a valued hospice volunteer since 2000 feels. “There is no better exercise for the heart than reaching down and lifting someone up.” Heather Fraser brings great insight and wisdom to her role as a Volunteer and Resources Coordinator. She manages a volunteer complement of over 60 and is often the first point of contact for clients approaching hospice for a palliative equipment loan. Working as a team member with Nicole Dudek, Client Services Coordinator and Counsellors Diane Hancox and Debbie Ribeyre, Heather ensures clients receive continuity of support at one of life’s most difficult times.

Story and photography by Lissa Alexander

OUR BEAUTIFUL, DURABLE, HIGH PERFORMANCE POLYSPARTIC CONCRETE COATINGS

ometimes we need to put all practicality aside and follow our hearts.

No matter what your age, people will find themselves in a place where they feel they can no longer subsist. They need to go in a different direction. Some decide it’s too much work to pick up their life and take a new path. And it’s never easy. But for celebrated wood carver Francois Mongeau, it was certainly the right decision. That was in Errington in 1985; The destination was Quebec.

add value and curb appeal to your home and transform your garage or home workshop into a great looking seamless work surface.

“I had a school bus in those days so we packed up the kids and we headed across the country.”

AN ARTFUL JOURNEY Mongeau is originally from Montreal. He lived there until 1970, when he left his life as a commercial photographer and moved to B.C. He ended up in Tsawwassen looking to work on sailboats when he was introduced to Robert Davidson, a Haida artist who is now considered one of Canada’s most respected contemporary visual artists.

SEAL IT ONCE

He remembers working with Davidson on art projects: carving, printmaking and working with jewelry.

Protect it For A Lifetime

“Davidson was apprenticing at the time with Bill Reid,” Mongeau remembers. Davidson told Mongeau to help himself to the wood. Mongeau still has a piece of that wood from 1970 in his shop that he shares with his son in Errington. Mongeau lived on Lasqueti Island where he met his former wife and had three children. The family moved to Errington and Mongeau was part of a collective of artists based out of The Loft in French Creek. He made and sold kid’s furniture with woven seats, but in order to make ends meet, he also worked as a tree planter and spacer seasonally while he built his house and workshop. When he was 39 he decided enough was enough — it was time to follow his dream of becoming a professional wood carver.

Mongeau, his former wife Diana, and their three boys Doban, Galen and Beau, headed for Quebec, where Francois was enrolled in a renowned wood carving school in a little town called Saint-Jean-PortJoli. Galen was 10 years old and he remembers the move well. “It was sink or swim,” he says, referencing the fact that no English was spoken in the town. Galen also remembers borrowing his fathers tools and making two small carvings. That was his first sale. “Someone thought they were really cute,” he recalls with a smile.

>>> extensive renovations, they opened the doors to the gallery. Francois taught carving lessons from his studio at TOSH and created a series of incredibly life-like sculptures including work boots, a clothing line, and fiddler’s hat. “One of my favourites was the paper bag,” recalls Galen, “he used to walk around the gallery and offer people cookies,” he laughs. Francois also created stone sculptures at his studio. Today those pieces are in collections around the world. Galen continued to work and play in his dad’s shop during his teen years and he also became interested in music. When he was 16 he started making and selling drums and then assisting his dad with his wooden kayak business. From there Galen got swept away with romantic ideas of a music career, but after perusing that dream for a while, reality sunk in. “A couple of years out of music school, having met several starving musicians who were even worse off than carvers and furniture-makers, I thought, this will be a great hobby,” he chuckles. So Galen busied himself doing odd jobs until he heard that a friend of a friend was looking for a custom desk to be made. “I said, sure, I could do that, and that was essentially the beginning of my career.”

COMPLEMENTARY GIFTS Galen began researching his new profession, talking to other craftsman, and of course, learning from his father. He joined Chris Raines and his custom furniture and cabinets company in Parksville for two years where he says he gained valuable experience learning about casework and small scale production. Francois started working with log home companies, carving murals, doors, spiral staircases, curved railings, elliptical windows and whatever else would enhance the rustic and beautiful homes. For a few years he was doing work exclusively for a company in Japan. A project for one of the Japanese homes took three years to build and 14 containers to ship. Galen assisted with some of that work, including carving bamboo leaves into 200 feet of fascia boards. “It was leaf after leaf after leaf…” Galen recalls. “Francois said, Galen you could do this!” they both laugh. “And it was great, I really enjoyed it,” Galen adds. Galen began to realize that his passion was in the precision of joinery, and enhancing wood’s natural beauty. Plus his warm and easy-going nature was very customer-pleasing. Francois’ talents on the other hand were in his artistic capabilities; his quick ability to visualize a design, and his relief carving, which involves masterfully carving, etching, burning and staining to create the illusion of a 3-dimensional image. They realized it was a match made in heaven. “We’re so fortunate that we have complementary gifts, and that’s why our collaborations work as smoothly as they do,” Galen explains. Over the years Francois has become well known for his stunning hand-carved doors and mantles. He also took up bronze casting, incorporating that into some of his wooden pieces. Galen enjoys working with heavily figured woods where he embellishes what nature has created. He likes working with local woods, particularly on projects with lots of curves and exposed joinery. His work is high quality and distinctive, with clean lines and interesting edges. He adores live edge, which leaves the natural edge of the wood exposed.

that he has,” he says. “I respect how accurate and thorough he is every time.” Francois says Galen’s patience for joinery is also something to admire.

“They had an open house recently, when they did a carving of a door, and you walked into the shop and you’d swear this moose was staring right back at you,” he explains. “Their work has progressed over the years and it’s just fascinating.”

The two have now been collaborating in the wood shop for 22 years. Galen lives with his family in the home in Errington where he grew up, and Francois, now semi-retired at 69, comes to the shop to work half-days.

THE TREE OF LIFE

I said, sure, I could do that, and that was essentially the beginning of my career.

That project was a set of carved double doors for a client in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was made from Fir and features an elaborate moose carving with etched glass in the top section. They created it so that there was no knob or visible hardware on the door, instead a European lock was incorporated that uses a wall-mounted thumb (biometric) scanner for entry.

Francois was quick to point out that Galen also has great strengths. “I don’t have the precision

Until then, they are both happy with the path they have chosen; working as a father-son team, and surrounded by family, wood and trees. “I feel extremely fortunate,” says Galen. “I know very few people that get to work with their fathers and to be able to create and collaborate on all sorts of things...the sky’s the limit.” “We have surrounded ourselves with trees,” says Francois. “And it’s an honour to be giving reverence to them.”

Galen said it’s that type of work that sets his father apart from other carvers. “Just the way he created the rolls in the neck of the moose and the way the shoulders would come down, that sense of proportion, I’m certainly not seeing much in that level of carving in North America.”

Galen says he would like to get into teaching in the next couple of years, something his dad started doing when he was Galen’s age. Together they could teach joinery, carving, bronze casting, etching stonework and more.

TÊTE-À-TÊTE OASIS

MONK Renowned artist and collaborator

W

hen acclaimed artist MONK goes to bed at night she feels totally and completely fulfilled. And when she wakes up in the morning she is inspired to get out of bed, because she can’t wait to get to the easel. She’s been enjoying painting since she was a small child and she has painted in 90 countries around the world. She’s known for her collaborations, allowing anyone of any age to come and paint with her on her masterpieces, and somehow it adds a special element and each one still ends up looking unbelievably stunning. That collaborating and sharing her easels started back when she was a child, and today it’s more important to her than ever that she continue doing it. Q: Where are you from? A: Originally I was born in Edmonton, and my parents brought me out to the Island when I was six years old for my birthday and I fell madly in love and so I always wanted to be on the Island. Approximately 25 years ago I started to come to Rathtrevor beach, and came every summer for the full summer. And then 20 years ago I bought a place on Rathtrevor and that’s my beach studio. Q: Tell me about your name? A: My name is a nick name. And it was given to me when I was very young. I think from birth on my name was Monk. So my parents had a friendship with a Tibetan Monk, and they felt it wasn’t just that I was a Monk in terms of religion, it was more that I was a monkey and I was all over the place. That’s how I got my name. Q: When did you decided you wanted to be a professional artist?

FALL 2015

46

A: April 25 when I was six years old. My parents wanted to keep me quiet in church so they gave me this little watercolour set. But you weren’t able to bring water into church. They gave me

just a thimble full of water. So I painted myself a picture and of course I spilled the water very quickly, so my father said “spit.” And so I would spit into the paint. And that’s how my paintings became known as spit paintings. So I put this painting up with bubblegum on the pew, and this little old lady came along and she said, “Huh, that’s really nice. Would you like to sell it?” And my eyes grew large and I couldn’t believe my luck, you could get money for something you love to do! So I said how much? And she said one cent. I said, one cent! Fantastic! You could buy a lot of things back then with one cent. That started my painting career and I was determined to be an artist after that. She rallied all the other old ladies and they would buy whatever I would turn out. So I was very adept at turning out paintings very quickly. The little old ladies never disappointed me. In fact some of these little old ladies have over 2,000 of my paintings. Q: How long did that go on for? A: I remember when I was 16, I stopped selling my paintings for one cent to these ladies in church. And I said, now I’m turning professional, I’ve got to get a little bit more for my paintings. And today of course I love—totally and completely—elderly people. And I got that love from that point, and I used to go over and vacuum their places right into my thirties, and go grocery shopping for them. I just had such a fantastic experience with seniors. And I crave it. Because they can give you such an incredible time. Focused time on you, and total and complete unconditional love. And of course what kid wouldn’t love that? And today I do an over 80 painting class, not because they need to learn, but because I need to be with them, and to hug and hold older ladies. My Mom and Dad are in their eighties.

PHOTO: Lissa Alexander

Q: Tell me when you decided to start letting people collaborate with you. A: Right from the very beginning. This little old lady said to me, you need to share your talent. So to me that meant share my paints, share my crayons, share whatever I had. So that’s what I did. So I would let people paint with me and colour with me, I would let them do whatever. Q: Why is collaborating important to you today? A: I believe that it is a sharing thing but it is also extremely important for me to spread the word to people that they can be creative and they actually need to be creative in order to be happy. I believe that we’re created to create. And so if we’re not creating there is a huge part that we’re missing. A lot of times people look at something and say, I couldn’t possibly do that. Well yes, you could, you can! I don’t believe that I’m an all-gifted individual or that I somehow was blessed and hit on the head with some sort of artistic talent wand. I believe very strongly that everyone can learn to paint; And can learn to do whatever it is that they want and it’s just a matter of practice. It’s just like walking. If you took your first step when you were a baby and you fell over and you said, oh, walking’s not for me, I can’t do it. That would be ludicrous. I think there’s many Rembrandts, many Picassos walking on the earth today and their talent is just waiting.
