Community Connections announced a major change to its leadership team, opting to appoint an executive leadership team instead of a single executive director.

The organization announced last week that the team of Gorette Imm, Kelly Bateman, Patti Larson and Diana Gadbois will lead the organization going forward.

The move follows the departure of executive director Craig Brown earlier this year.

The decisions to adopt a shared leadership model was made to allow the organization to grow its support staff, said Community Connections in a news release.

"At Community Connections we have a deep belief and practice in supporting people to be experts in

their own lives. This extends to our staff as well," the news release states. "We have a fantastic team from the Executive level throughout the entire organization. We are going to reflect that belief in the implementation of a shared leadership model at the executive level. We will make shared strategic decisions together and bring our individual expertise to continue to support the day to day work of the organization."

The executive duties have been divided amongst the four appointees. Imm will head up family services. She has been with Community Connections for almost eight years and has recently been the director of family services as well as a Registered Clinical Counsellor.

Bateman is in charge of community living services for adults.

Batement has been with the society since 1987 and has managed the community inclusion, customized employment, and residential services for adults with developmental disabilities programs for 25 years.

Larson will lead the community outreach and development team. She has run the food bank since it's founding 15 years ago, and also runs the organization's health and security program.

Gadbois will be in charge of finance and administration. She has worked for community connections since 2010 as director of finance & administration.

In my work with the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc Nations, I have been deeply involved in discussions about renewal of the Columbia River Treaty, focusing on restoring ecosystems and returning salmon to the Upper Columbia and Kootenay River watersheds.

I have spearheaded an initiative to learn how operation of the treaty dams could be improved to benefit ecosystems, fish and wildlife, and local communities. We have proposed establishment of a Columbia Basin International Watershed Board under the auspices of the International Joint Commission.

There is no question about involvement of the federal government in Treaty negotiations.

Ottawa has constitutional responsibility for international treaties, for rivers that cross the 49th parallel, and for fisheries. The federal government must work very closely with the government of B.C., but also with First Nations and local governments in the Columbia Basin to develop negotiating positions and, ultimately, negotiate effectively with the US government.

My focus is on federal funding to improve rail infrastructure, particularly through the critical Rogers Pass transportation bottleneck.

The federal government has to be involved in the negotiations because the treaty is an agreement between the United States and Canada. Canada transferred the rights and obligations under the CRT to the province under the Canada-B.C. Agreement, but substantive treaty changes would require federal government involvement.

For constitutional reasons, the federal government also has to be involved in discussion on water use licenses, possible salmon restoration, and aboriginal rights, but our role would be to work closely with both the province and BC Hydro – the Canadian entity appointed to implement the CRT on behalf of the province. Since Liberal policy to re-engage in an inclusive process with indigenous peoples mirrors provincial goals, the federal partnership would not hinder the treaty process. My former involvement with Columbia Basin Trust also ensures a priority that decisions would always consider the direct impacts on the people who live in the basin.

The Liberal party expects me to speak up on local rural issues and highways are a central concern in this region. Infrastructure in Canada is rapidly decaying and a Sunday drive on Highway 93 shows you the full impact of an old road dealing with new realities. These roads were

The Columbia River Treaty has had significant impacts here in the Canadian portion of the Columbia River Basin. Substantial sacrifices were made by residents during the creation of the dams and reservoirs, and impacts continue as a result of hydro operations.

In 2012, the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments formed a committee to ensure that all area residents had a say in the future of the treaty. As a member of that committee, I participated in extensive public meetings that resulted in a report that contained recommendations to the provincial and federal governments.

I am proud to have played a role in ensuring that the voices of Kootenay-Columbia residents were heard in the potential renewal of the treaty.

The role of the federal government should be to support the collective voices of Basin residents and to seek to ensure that the recommendations are implemented.

The Trans-Canada Highway upgrade requires coordination between federal and provincial governments, and a divided highway from Sicamous to the Alberta border must be a priority.

The Columbia River Treaty (CRT) has no expiry date, but has a minimum length of 60 years, which is met in September 2024. One or both countries wishing to terminate the CRT must give at least 10 years notice. September 2014 was the earliest date to announce intent to terminate the CRT by 2024. An alteration of only one clause of the CRT would create a termination, which would result in negotiation of a new treaty. At this time, neither nation has indicated intention to terminate the CRT. The Columbia River Treaty is an important agreement between Canada and the United States, which has helped both countries effectively manage flood control, downstream irrigation and power generation on the trans-boundary Columbia River for the past 50 years. The CRT continues to be an example of the strong and cooperative relationship between Canada and the United States.

We look forward to working with the United States as it completes its own review process of the CRT. As we look to the future of the Columbia River Treaty, the Government of Canada, in close cooperation with British Columbia, will ensure that Canada and BC will continue to benefit from the Treaty.

The Columbia River Treaty was one of the most devastating projects to be undertaken in the region on environment, economy, first nations and private property rights. Within a few years of the treaty, the Sinixt first nations were conveniently declared extinct by the government despite the fact they were and still are a thriving culture.

Salmon runs, sacred sites and fertile lands were flooded. Around 5,000 individuals' private property was violated and flooded, leaving them displaced with a minimal compensation for their homes.

Government should never have the authority to force people out of their homes and off their lands.

Over 100,000 animals' habitat were destroyed from the flooding. Economically, the impact was far more negative then estimated. The revenue from hydroelectric dams did not match the initial costs associated with building the infrastructure. Compensation of the people who were displaced, or the estimated losses, never took into consideration the fertile lands for agriculture and forestry. As a result funds were taken from schools, healthcare and forest services.

That being said, no I do not think Ottawa should have involvement in Columbia River Treaty negotiations.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is building a mountain coaster that will stretch from the mid-mountain lodge to the resort base.

According to a report by RMR that was presented to Revelstoke council last week the single-track coaster would stretch 1.4 kilometres down the lower portion of the resort, from the gondola midstation to the base village.

Just don't call it a roller coaster.

"The experience is really different. It's gliding through natural terrain and almost mirroring a downhill mountain bike, without having the skills," said Peter Neilsen, the vice-president of RMR. "It's that kind of feel, that flow through the woods. It's definitely very different from a roller coaster."

The coaster would reach speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour, and riders would be able to use a braking mechanism to adjust their speed.

Mountain coasters have been installed in Europe but are rare in North America. The report says the ride would be unique to western North America. Similar rides using a double-track exist at Blue Mountain, Ontario, and Mount Saint Sauveur, Quebec.

It would add to the resort’s summer activities, which so far only consist of gondola operations to mid-mountain and brunch at the Revelation Lodge.

Neilsen said the coaster would be a cornerstone of the resort's summer operations.

"We really see an opportunity in summer that

we haven't realized yet or really pursued doggedly," he said. "We really felt that having something that was different would have a lot of attraction to not just an adventure sport market, but the general public as well to draw people to the resort and the community.

"We're seeking out something that was unique," Neilsen added. "Everybody has a zipline, but nobody has one of these."

The cost would be $15 for a single ride, with discounts for multiple rides.

The coaster is being built by the European company Brandauer, who has built them on the other side of the Atlantic. The resort aims to finish construction of the mountain coaster by the start of the 2015-16 ski season, with operations set to begin next year.

City council voted to issue a development permit to the resort to build the coaster on Tuesday.

"I’m excited about this and I’m happy to see it come to the table," said councillor Scott Duke. "It’s more summer development that’s going to draw people into the community.”

RMR is also looking at opening the gondola right to the top next summer. The resort has landscaped the area at the top of the gondola, next to the Mackenzie Outpost, and built an egress trail down Kill the Banker that can be used to evacuate the lift if necessary.

"There's no doubt we're going to, it's just the timeline," said Neilsen. "Whether it's next year or the year after. That's part of the whole plans of summer operations — to expand into our alpine area with a whole variety of different activities from sight-seeing, hiking, and potentially alpine biking."

All five candidates running for election in Kootenay-Columbia have confirmed their attendance at the debate. NDP candidate Wayne Stetski, Liberal Don Johnston, Green candidate Bill Green and Libertarian Christina Yahn, will all make the case why they should take over from Conservative David Wilks, while Wilks will defend his record as MP. The debate is being organized by a coalition of five local media organizations, including the Revelstoke Review, Revelstoke Current, Revelstoke Mountaineer, EZ Rock and Stoke FM. The media coalition was formed after no other organizations stepped up to host the debate locally.

The media coalition is asking people to submit their questions for the candidates in advance.

That way, we can have the opportunity to review the questions, ensure no topics are duplicated, and ensure the most efficient, effective and relevant debate possible. If there is a question you want to ask, please e-mail it to alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com, or to one of the other media outlets of your choice. The deadline to submit questions is Thursday, Sept 17, at 5 p.m.

Former mayor Geoff Battersby will serve as moderator for the debate.

The debate begins at 7 p.m., however we have invited the candidates to arrive early, at 6 p.m., for a chance to meet prospective voters before the forum begins.

Ten other debates are taking place throughout the Kootenay-Columbia riding in advance of the October 19 federal election.

Seniors advocate finds holes in home support TOM FLETCHER Black Press

A third of people caring for a frail senior at home are in distress, and yet some provincial supports such as adult day programs remain under-used, according to a new report from B.C.'s Seniors Advocate.

A survey of health assessments for 30,000 B.C. seniors found that the majority of those who report fatigue and other stresses from caring for a relative or friend aren't using provincial programs.

B.C. offers three kinds of respite services, adult day programs, respite beds in care facilities that offer care for up to 30 days at a time, and home support visits from care aides.

Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie said availability of programs is better in urban areas than rural ones, but in general B.C. offers less respite care than Alberta and has more unpaid caregivers reporting distress.

Mackenzie says increasing availability for adult day programs could reduce emergency visits from complex home care patients by a third, and hospital admissions by half, detecting medication or other health problems before they produce a hospital visit.

One puzzling result from the survey is

that while there are waiting lists for adult day programs in B.C., one out of four spaces is empty each day. Mackenzie said there may be logistical problems with home care patients, such as a need to attend medical appointments at the same time as the day program is offered.

"Caregivers do it all," she said. "Sometimes it is is simple as driving mum to the doctor's office. Other times it is as complicated as insulin injections or changing catheter bags.

"Sometimes it is dropping in on mum and dad at the end of the work day and other times it is living with your wife of 65-plus years as she surrenders to the ravages of dementia, does not know who you are, cannot be left alone and must be fed and toileted."

Health Minister Terry Lake said the province has increased investments in home health services over the past 10 years, and is working with health authorities to shift from hospital to home-care as the population ages.

Mackenzie said the number of adult day program clients and days utilized has declined in the last three years, and the number of respite beds at care facilities also appears to be down.

The survey found that only half of the clients registered for home support reported receiving a home visit in the previous seven days.

Trans-Canada Highway flows through three National Parks (Yoho, Glacier and Mount Revelstoke) and Highway 93 flows through Kootenay National Park.

The federal government has sole responsibility for the highway through the parks.

Since 2011, I have worked closely with the environment minister to secure more than $300 million dollars in funding for projects within the four national parks. Revelstoke Music Instrument Swap Meet Saturday September 19th The Revelstoke Community Foundation in collaboration with the Revelstoke Community Band and Revelstoke Elementary School music program is having a musical instrument/equipment swap meet Saturday Sept 19th from 11am to 3pm at Begbie View Elementary school gym.

It is a fundraising event with profits shared amongst the three groups.

The Revelstoke Community Band has existed in our community for 120 years! In a typical; year there are 15-20 members who participates in many community events throughout the year. John Baker is the band leader and conductor and has done this for many years. The Community Band is hopeful the music swap meet will become an annual event to help redistribute music equipment/instruments into the hands of musicians in the community in an affordable fashion.

The event is open to everyone. Drop off your instrument or music related piece of equipment. A $2 per item registration fee will be charged and a 20% commission will be charged on the selling price. All sales are final. We will be accepting debit card, credit card and cash for purchases. Sorry, personal checks are not accepted. It will be a great opportunity to sell or buy a used instrument. A couple of “ advisors” will be on hand to help with the event. Instrument drop off and registration is between 9am and 11am. The sale starts at 11am sharp and will close at 3pm?

When Revelstoke Review editor Alex Cooper approached me to write a short piece on this question, I admit my first impulse was to lob the ball back into his court. I’m not a professional writer, and in relation to an evolving Axis Mundi Festival cycle, it’s a complex query and one that’s difficult to answer in 400 words or less, but here goes: We get asked this alot: What does the name ‘Axis Mundi’ mean?

The term axis mundi derives from the Latin

words "axis" and "mundi" or world, together meaning "pivot point, or line, connecting the earth and the sky/heavens." It’s a concept that’s linked to cosmological ideas like the World Tree or the Naval of the World.

Axis Mundi Festival is a good name for a festival based in Revelstoke, whose mountains make you feel like you really are at the meeting place between heaven and earth. And as a name, it arguably beats out “Naval of the World Fest” although that has a nice ring to it.

The biannual concept of the Axis Mundi Festival offers a two-part festival cycle, starting with Axis Mundi Harvest Festival in September and Axis Mundi Solstice planned for June 17–19, 2016.

While the two events will be themed differently, both are based on the four pillars that form the base of the Axis Mundi mandate: arts & culture, adventure, environment and community.

At any Axis Mundi Festival you can expect to experience arts and live music, expect elements that celebrate an outdoor lifestyle, expect a commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives, and expect all of these within the context of the community of Revelstoke. An ideas festival, Axis Mundi is a meeting place, a rendezous point that celebrates all of the aspects that make mountain culture what it is.

Closing in on my 400 words, I have to say that in order to really understand what Axis Mundi is, people have to come out and experience it for themselves, beginning with the FREE fringe festival on Friday. The fringe is open to everyone, with live music at venues throughout the city. Saturday and Sunday have markets, events, lectures, and music workshops through the daytime. Many of these are also open to everyone.

Capping off each day are the Devil’s Club Challenge Races and mainstage concerts up at Revelation Lodge.

Lots to get stoked about in the city this weekend, so come check it out and enjoy. See you at the festival.

Severn Cullis-Suzuki speaks on importance of taking action IMOGEN WHALE

Special to the Revelstoke Review Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Axis Mudi Harvest festival speaker, has a message. Daughter of one of Canada's most prominent environmentalist and humanitarian activist couples, Tara Cullis and David Suzuki, she has carved her own niche in the same fields.

“I've always been very inspired by my mom,” Cullis-Suzuki explains. “She walks the talk. When I was younger and angry at what was happening in the world, she had me translate that anger and reaction to action by helping me figure out what we could do about it.”

The ability to translate our knowledge of the atrocities going on around the world, be it a frightening environmental future or the horrific plight of refugees, to a sustained reaction and action is something CullisSuzuki hopes to inspire.

“I think we lose people, young people especially, to the idea they can't do anything, when in reality, we can make a difference in the world,” she says. “We can have the conversation. What kind of lifestyle do we want? What kind of society? Then we can focus on alternatives to take us there.”

Recognizing the problems and solutions available to humanity is ultimately freeing and fulfilling, Cullis-Severn argues. She points out, “Humans exist in a paradigm where everything we do is destructive; there is no perfect eco-lifestyle, but there are pieces we can fit together.”

The idea of community and forging relationships is something in which Cullis-

Suzuki believes. “The idea of fostering relationships, having farmers markets and growing herbs is vital. Knowing your neighbours, having a relationship with where your food comes from, even if it's just having a relationship with your grocer,” she says.

An environmentalist, Cullis-Suzuki says people are often surprised to learn she loves to fish and that her husband hunts.

“There is an urban, sanitized vision of what it means to be an environmentalist, where I should be a vegetarian” Cullis-Suzuki explains. “Do I think we need to limit consumption of mass produced meats? Yes. But we need to know where are food comes from, understand and respect the process.

Animals and plants have to die for us to live."

Cullis-Suzuki has lived in Haida Gwaii for the past eight years and works with First Nations Elders to revitalize their languages. “Ethnoecology is about understanding the plant and animal worlds and how they relate to indigenous world views,” she explains.

Indigenous languages speak of the natural world in a way that simply doesn't translate. The loss of languages that offer more diversity for human understanding of what it means to be human is a ludicrous way of limiting our thinking, especially as we live in a world going through massive changes, believes Cullis-Suzuki. “Talk about making your box smaller, when we should be thinking outside of it,” she says.

“Our children will likely live in a time of food shortages and mass migrations,” she

It's unrealistic, she believes, to pretend it won't affect Canada. “We have a lot here and we need to make some hard decisions and start sharing,” she says. “We need to

engage in this issue that will affect our children.”

The first Axis Mundi Harvest festival hits Revelstoke this weekend, and for those looking to take it all in, decisions will be made. Do you go to the Banff Mountain Film Festival on Friday, or enjoy the beer gardens and live music in Grizzly Plaza? What about the Last Drop vs. the River City Pub? Do you spend Saturday in town, catching some of the workshops and speakers on hand, or do you head to the Adventure Market in Grizzly Plaza and look for something else to do in the mountains?

The good news for those that are on the fence is that several events are free. so you can get a taste of things before committing financially. Everything on Friday is open to the public, as is the adventure market and Sunday's 100 Mile food market. All events in Grizzly Plaza and at the United Church are free. Your festival pass, which costs $100, gets you access to the various guest speakers, the music workshops and the main stage shows at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. There's also a free shuttle bus running to shepherd you to the resort from downtown.

This is my schedule for the weekend. You might want to do something else, so I've presented alternatives where they exist.

It's time to leave the office. I'll be grabbing a burrito at the Taco Club, then enjoying it at Grizzly Plaza where blues singer and harmonic virtuoso Sherman TANK Doucette will be playing with his band. The Rotary Club is hosting a beer garden from 4–10 p.m., so I'll grab a beer while I'm at it.

7 p.m.

It's off to the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre for the Banff Mountain Film Festival: Radical Reels show. It's a collection of the best action-sport films from the film festival. ntrance is not included with an Axis Mundi pass, so you'll have to pay $20 to get in.

Alternativately, there's a whole bunch of free shows taking place. Go check out the Nyundo School Roadshow in Grizzly Plaza. This group of Rwandan music students are led by Jacques Murigande, a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide who settled in Ottawa before returning to his homeland to lead the music program. They will be followed by Buckman Coe, who will be playing his brand of soulful, gospel-tinged, psychedelic folk music.

Alternative: Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra is performing at the River City Pub. This acoustic ensemble draws on all sorts of global roots music, from Spanish flamenco music to African percussion to bluegrass. For a more mellow affair, singersongwriter Aspen Switzer is at Chubby Funsters, while Rachelle van Zanten will be serenading patrons at the Village Idiot.

11 p.m.

Let's see — do I want to drink and party, or drink and drown my sorrows. If the former, I'll stay at the Last Drop for pop-rockers The Walkervilles. If the latter, it's off to the River City Pub for the soulful acoustic tunes of the Rodney Decroo Trio. Alternatively, blues guitarist Les Copeland will be playing at Chubby Funsters, while roots artist Dominique Fraissard is at the Village Idiot.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

That didn't stop him from pursuing his passion, and he's continued his adventures around the world since then, raising money for charity through his efforts.

Once the lecture is out I'll walk down the block to the Last Drop where acoustic musician Buckman Coe will be playing a show with electro-DJ Adam Shaikh. Shaikh produced Coe's latest album, so I'm sure there will be a great dynamic there.

The rest of the afternoon I'll be taking a break to save up energy for the show at Revelstoke Mountain Resort that night. As a result I'll be missing a lecture by Olympic gold-medallist Chandra Crawford (3 p.m. at the C3 Church) and another musical team-up, this time between The Walkervilles and TANK Doucette. I will try to make my way to the United Church for the Stone Soup Community Meal before heading to RMR. 6 p.m.

It's time for the main event at the RMR midstation. Saturday night's show kicks off at 6 p.m. with Highs, an emerging indie-pop from Ontario.

They're followed by Baskery, a trio of Swedish sisters who will make you swoon with their alt-folk harmonies. At 9:15 p.m., headliners Walk Off the Earth will take the stage. The Toronto quintet have been making a name for themselves with their quirky covers, upbeat pop originals and creative music videos. This might be your best chance to see them before they blow up huge. Once they're done, Adam Shaikh & the Otherworld Orchestra will take the party late into the night

10 a.m.

Time to wake up and head downtown, where I'll grab a coffee at the Modern and check out the Six String Nation guitar, which will be on display during the day. The guitar is made from 63 items out of Canadian history including wood, bone, metal and stone representing different cultures from across the country. After, I'll mosey on down to Grizzly Plaza to browse the Adventure Market. I may or may not hang around for Stone Soup, an interactive children's play by Bev Peacock of the Caravan Farm Theatre, which starts at 11:30 a.m.

I can't help it.

The movie starts and I'm automatically playing “Spot the Revelstoke Landmark”, along with “Name that Revelstoke Movie Extra.” I'm also hoping Mountain Men is at least decent, since I'm there watching it on opening night at the Roxy Theatre specifically for the purpose of writing this review.

Oh, not to mention half the town – or at least a good chunk of the population – were involved in the film in some capacity, and it turns out producer Jason James is the son of Mayor Mark McKee, and well... it's kind of like playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, only with people and places I know.

Turns out the movie is good. Like really good.

As in, you should go see Mountain Men while you can, and not just because your neighbour's cousin's husband (or whoever) was an extra during the wedding scene filmed at the United Church.

While the movie definitely has a prominent comedic element, mainly carried by actor Tyler Labine, the film is also largely a drama, telling the story of two estranged brothers, Toph (Labine) and Cooper (Chace Crawford). Cooper flies in for a visit from Manhattan to attend their mother's second marriage (we learn that their father is dead).

Cooper, it seems, is having a difficult time accepting their father has passed on, given that no body has ever been found.

If you've seen the trailer, you will already know that the two brothers head up to the family cabin, and that after an overnight stay the truck won't start, which results in the rather idiotic idea to start a fire to try and unthaw the frozen battery.

You'll also know that along with the truck, the entire cabin happens to burn down.

That scene acts as the catalyst for the rest of the movie, where Cooper and Toph must find their way out of the woods, figure out their relationship, and struggle with their inner demons (you know the old Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Himself bit). If it wasn't for the comedic relief (Crawford does a pretty convincing job of acting high after eating a few of Toph's organic pot cookies), I'm not convinced the dramatic element would work. It's almost the coupling of the comedy and drama that pulls the film together.

The only disappointment I have in the film is that a large part of the plot is centred around Cooper's developing mental illness, which we discover the brothers' father also suffered from.

While there is some effort to include this element as part of the storyline, it's never referred to as being a mental health disorder (instead using words like “crazy”).

Overall, however, the film is enjoyable. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll recognize the scenery and the people in Revelstoke. Oh, and you can brag that you've seen the movie that was filmed in Revelstoke, featuring Revelstoke locations, and using people who live here as extras.

Did I mention they didn't try to turn Revelstoke into another town? It's actually Revelstoke. That might be my favourite part.

You can see Mountain Men at the Roxy Theatre at 6:30 p.m. until Thursday, Sept. 17.

Time to get out of bed and head downtown to find breakfast and do some shopping at the 100 Mile Harvest — a celebration of local food culture in Grizzly Plaza.

1 p.m.

Remember that Six String Nation guitar you saw on display at the Modern?

The creators will be at the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre to tell the story of the guitar, from its conception in 1995, to its official debut on Canada Day 2006, to the many adventures its been on since. If that's not your thing, Revelstoke's Greg Hill will be giving a lecture at the C3 Church on his various ski mountaineering exploits and close calls in the backcountry.

1:30 p.m.

I'm hoping to make it see A Million Dollars in Pennies on the Last Drop patio. This Shuswap folk duo have played Revelstoke many times and their shows are always enjoyable.

2 p.m.

It's back to the performing arts centre for a lecture by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a cultural and environmental activist and writer. See page 11 for more on her.

3 p.m.

The bike will come in handy as I zip back to the Last Drop for the Trad to Rad workshop featuring Canadian fiddler Ashley MacIsaac and Swedish folktrio Baskery. The workshop will look at how these artists weave traditional folk music into contemporary compositions.

6 p.m.

It's time to head back to Revelstoke Mountain Resort for what promises to be a fun night. Little Hurricane, a bluesy rock duo, will kick things off and have you thinking of bands like the White Stripes and the Black Keys. They are followed by Sticky Fingers, an Australian rock group known for their rowdy and wild shows. Canadian fiddler Ashley MacIsaac headlines the evening, while electro duo The Floozies will keep the party going late into the night.

On the podium

Two Revelstokians reached the podium in the summer Future West Motocross Series overall standings. Skyller Archer finished second overall in the Intermediate MX2 class, and second overall in the Intermediate MX3 class. Seth Chevrier finished second overall in the Junior B class and third overall in the Schoolboy class. Devin Archer also took part in the series, racing in the beginner class in Kelowna. The race series, which featured the top dirt bikers in the province, finished last weekend at the Future West BC Championships at the Bear Creek track in Kelowna. ~ Contributed by Joel Chevrier

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com Geoff Battersby is the recipient of the newly named Revelstoke Community Forestry Pioneer Award.

The award, formerly known as the Pioneer Logger Award, was so named "To recognize that the well being of our forests and our community are very interwoven," said Brian Sumner, the president of the BC Interior Forestry Museum.

Battersby was honoured for his role in the founding of the Revelstoke Community Forestry Corporation in 1993. "RCFC keeps the economic benefits from TFL 56 in our community and attends carefully to the environmental issues in the forests on our doorsteps," said Sumner.

Battersby was also recognized for his role as chair of the Revelstoke Community Energy Corporation. "RCEC sends 70,000 tons of so-called wood waste every year into heat for city buildings," said Sumner. "The new frontier in forest pioneering is about collaboration and seeing bigger and bigger interconnections."

Battersby received the award during Timber Day activities on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Grizzlies falter in KIJHL season opener ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com A strong opponent, stellar goaltending, lack of finish, a few mental mistakes and perhaps a little over-confidence all contributed to the Revelstoke Grizzlies opening night loss to the Sicamous Eagles on Friday, says coach Ryan Parent.

Revelstoke fell 3-2 to the Eagles in Sicamous to open the KIJHL season on Friday, Sept. 11. It was the team's only game of the league's opening weekend.

"We ran into some pretty good goaltending and I think we did not execute around the net," said coach Ryan Parent. "You have to be hungrier and pay the price, and we didn't do that."

Danny O'Donnell opened the scoring, putting Sicamous up 1-0 two minutes into the game. Kaden Black evened the score for the Grizzlies with 97 seconds left in the period but Nathan Plessis restored Sicamous' lead a minute later.

In the second, Tyler Collens increase Sicamous' lead to 3-1. Josh Pilon made it 3-2 with a power play goal near the mid-way point of the third, but Revelstoke was unable to capitalize on any more of its 19 third period shots, skating to a 3-2 loss.

Keyon Bittner made 36 saves in nets for the Grizzlies.

The loss followed a pre-season in which the Grizzlies went undefeated, winning four games easily and tying another. When asked if the team might have been overconfident going into the season opener, Parent said it was a possibility, but he also

praised the team's leadership.

"We have a good, solid leadership core.

They know what it takes to win in that league," he said. "We're going to have to be more mentally focused and ready."

Parent credited Black for another strong game, while also mentioning the play of rookie defenseman Michael Lenoury and

Californian import Aaron Eragon.

Parent's main theme in the post-game interview was the team's inability to put the puck in the net, despite directing 47 shots on the Sicamous net.

"We have to be more hungry around the net and execute if we're going to do more damage," he said.

Parent said the game presented a reality check for the team. While there are many returnees, about half the team is new to the KIJHL. "To get your two points every night, you have to work at it," he said. "You can't take shifts off or have mental lapses because they cost you."

Parent said they will work on execution around the goal, as well as defensive zone breakouts this week.

The Revelstoke Grizzlies play twice next weekend. On Friday, they're in Kamloops to play the Storm and on Saturday they head to Invermere to play the Columbia Valley Rockies.

Parent said he expects a tough game against Kamloops, who are regularly one of the league's top teams.

"We have to give ourselves a chance to win in Kamloops by working extremely hard," he said. "They're well coached. You have to respect that opponent every time you play them. That goes for every team in our division."

Obituaries Myriam Helene Knoll (Tetlock) July 15, 1947 - Sept. 4, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Myriam Knoll (Tetlock) of Regina, SK., announce her passing at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Myriam was born and raised in Revelstoke. She was predeceased by her father, Mervyn (Smokey) Tetlock, in 1992. Michael David Camara Michael David (Mike) Camara passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of Queen Victoria Hospital Revelstoke on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 at the age of 42 years. A Funeral Service was held at the Revelstoke Community Centre on Monday morning, September 14th, 2015 with Mr. Gary Sulz officiating. Pallbearers were Marc Chabot, Calvin Kohurt, Leonard Bedard, George Amaral, Nelson Mendonca and Troy Thibert. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 202 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1835 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 3H5, in memory of Mike.

Mike was born in Revelstoke, B.C. on November 1, 1972 and had been a resident of Revelstoke for most of his life. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, baseball, playing his guitar, and was also an avid Canucks fan.

Mike was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his spouse ReneĂŠ Astra of Revelstoke; three children: Devin, Landon and Gavin, all of Revelstoke; brother Mark (Tanya) Camara of Calgary; sister Rosemary (Kevin) Keates of Victoria; mother Gabriela Camara of Salmon Arm; nephews Burkley and Cameron of Calgary; niece Cora of Victoria; aunt Aurora Armas of Salmon Arm; parents-in-law Joan and Olympe Astra of Revelstoke as well as numerous cousins and other relatives.

New Family Centre opens

Community Connections Society Community Connections is pleased to announce the opening of the Family Centre located at the Alliance Church (1550 Illecillewaet Rd.) which will be offering child care services for

children aged 30 months to five years in the community of Revelstoke starting this month.

Community Connections has a long history of providing services to children and their families. There are currently more than 100 families attending weekly parent and child support drop-in programs offered both on site at CommuThe new Family Centre is located at the Allance Church on Illecillewaet Road. ~ Photo Contributed nity Connections, as well as off site in the community to ensure accessibility.

With the opening of the Family Centre we have listened to parents in the community who have expressed a desire for a child care service which reflects the needs of their children and families. The intent of the Family Centre is to respond to what is important for children and families and become a place where they feel welcomed and supported.

The planning and development of the Family Centre has been a team effort from the Family Services staff at Community Connections who have long envisioned offering accessible and affordable child care services and a place where children and parents can gather.
