hile each member of the Tour de Rock team and every Vancouver Island resident who supports Cops for Cancer is united in their fight, each person’s connection to the disease is very personal. That means everyone supports the Tour de Rock for different, but equally meaningful reasons. Here’s why some of the 2015 Tour de Rock members are riding:

“I have been involved with the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock for the last nine years, mainly as part of the motorcycle escort team. I have lost a Grandmother and an uncle to this devastating disease. I have been blessed with two beautiful healthy daughters and want to help families who are dealing with everything involved with having a child with cancer.”

“It was 20 years ago that I lost my younger brother, Steven, to cancer. Steven’s life was extended nearly seven years by the medical treatments. He was a few months away from being declared cancer free before the leukemia returned. To this day, I clearly recall the doctors telling us that there was nothing more they could do. It is the most helpless feeling in the world knowing the end is coming for someone you love, someone younger than you, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.”

“I am married with 5 children; 1 of whom, Sam, watches over us from heaven. My wife, Nikki, and I consider ourselves fortunate. We did not have to endure the pain and struggles faced by so many families as their child, brother, sister, grandchild, niece, or nephew suffers with cancer. I cannot comprehend having to live that struggle daily wondering whether there is a cure in store for us or if each day is possibly the last with that beloved member of my family.”

Dillon Sahota, Central Saanich Police Service

John Belanger, North Vancouver Island Traffic Services

Ian Wetzel-Eden, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP

“Growing up I was always told the same thing over and over again: When someone is in their time of need, no matter who they were, where they were from or what they were going through, it is our responsibility as human beings to at least try and help them.”

“My first introduction to childhood cancer was when I was in 4th grade, a classmate of mine passed away from leukemia. That was the first time in my life I remember experiencing having someone that I know pass away. That memory stuck with me and has impacted me knowing that cancer does not discriminate and it can and does affect anyone regardless of age.”
