GALA FUNDRAISER One of the largest fundraisers ever planned for Abbotsford will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3.

It will feature an “out of the world” REMPEL guest speaker — Col. Chris Hadfield, former Canadian astronaut and commander of the International Space Station. Hadfield has become an international celebrity as a result of his stint in space, and is a highly-sought speaker.

He‘ll speak at the first annual gala, subtitled “The Sky is Not the Limit,” in support of Habitat for Humanity Upper Fraser Valley. The event will take place in the spacious Abbotsford Centre on King Road. Organizers are hoping to sell 800 tickets, says Habitat for Humanity UFV CEO Doug Rempel.

Doors for the event open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner, a live and silent auction featuring more than $56,000 worth of art, and dance to the music of Topaz at this formal event. Habitat for Humanity gala organizers are anticipating that he will have an afternoon audience of about 3,000 middle school students, who will be able to hear him by donation, raising money to support the organization. They will also have the chance to win a variety of prizes, including

iPads, mountain bikes and a helicopter ride.

He has told audiences about his Źrst day in space in 1995, and how he climbed awkwardly into the spacecraft, which is sitting on its tail and was strapped into cramped space above what is essentially a giant missile.

The “wild, wild ride” lasted for eight minutes and 42 seconds.

Then the engines shut off, and he was weightless.

“It’s a really cool feeling,” HadŹeld says. “I recommend it.”

He strongly believes in the principles of people working together to take care of each other – principles that guide Habitat for Humanity.

“Earth is a space station and we are not passengers — we’re crew.”

For the past 13 years, humans have been able to live continually in space because of co-operation between nations and their combined goal of exploring the universe, said HadŹeld. The same can apply to nations on Earth.
