Ever tasted a tomato? A real tomato? Ever wondered how could something this good be related to the tepid fare from the supermarket? Maybe that’s why Steve Horel’s Rockbottom Farm tomatoes are featured on the Return of Luigi pizzas that are flying out the door at Pizzeria Guerrilla in downtown Courtenay? It’s all about the return of flavour. Steve has a sense of humour. He’s been growing tomatoes – noted for their affinity for hot weather – in a “frost pocket with a relatively short growing season” since 1974. Maybe that’s why they taste so good: what doesn’t kill them makes them stronger, more flavourful. Flavour fame wasn’t always the case with Steve. “I started growing vegetables back in ‘74, mainly because I was hungry – and tired of tree-planting!” He starts the spring with lettuce, early turnips, and bedding plants. His tomato starts are prized by gardeners. And though RockBottom Farm is in a chilly bit of Merville, there are times when the almost tropical aromas of ripe melons fill those occasionally frigid fields. “I’ve been growing melons for the extended family for several years.” Some years – like this one – he has enough for the Market.

Cut tomatillos into quarters. Place in blender with remaining ingredients. Pulse until ingredients are finely chopped and well blended 30-60 seconds. Salsa is best served within 1 hour. Enjoy with Abuelo’s tortilla chips*. *available at market vendors
My favourite RockBottom produce, after the tomatoes? The fiery Padron peppers. Steve likes them grilled, with a sprinkle of salt. I like to add a sprinkle of grated cheese. Either way, perfect with beer! And then there are beans and carrots. “Lots of carrots!” Steve exclaims. Growing for the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market RockBottom Farm has been at the Market since it opened. “It’s a God-send for any small grower, especially someone starting out,” Steve says. He’s tried selling to retail, but they need a constant and consistent supply. “You don’t have that pressure at the market. You can sell any quantity, even if you’ve only got half a dozen cabbage, or two dozen cauliflower: you can sell them at the market. It’s a nice way to grow food.
