New artistic director at Tree House set for season Serge Belliveau is excited about theatre possibilities for young actors

T

here’s a whole world of theatrical exploration ahead for young actors joining Tree House Youth Theatre under the leadership of the troupe’s new artistic director Serge Belliveau.

“There’s a lot that I’m really looking forward to,” he explained recently of the new post. “There are personal things, professional things and things for the community – one of the biggest things is actually for the community. I think there is a great amount of growth of awareness for Tree House that they could have. We need to make our name larger than it is.

“First off, I would like to thank the board for choosing me as the next artistic director for Tree House. In many ways I ‘got my start’ in theatre through Tree House Youth Theatre,” he said. “With the experiences learned from this company and my years of training and performances, I intend to pass on my great joy and passion for theatre. I am excited and inspired to be working with the young community of this City, and cannot wait to see what life lessons they to teach me in return.

“I am motivated by Matt Gould’s tenure as artistic director and look forward to see where Tree House Youth Theatre can grow from here.”

Of course, working with the youth is the central draw – “Giving them the opportunity to grow and develop whether they want to pursue it professionally or just for fun.

“There’s a huge relationship between artistic people and successful people. If we can give them an opportunity to figure out who they are just a little bit quicker and build their confidence – there are so many life skills that are developed in a group setting.

“It’s also fantastic to be a part of something in that age group – regardless of what it is. But I know what potential in the arts, drama and performance there is. I feel like I can bring a lot out in them – I’m hoping for that.”

Belliveau, 41, signed on this summer after the departure of long-standing director Gould and his first order of business was the Summer Stock Theatre Camp.

And it’s been a seamless transition thanks again also to plenty of support from the board, he said.

“I totally feel comfortable with these guys also,” he said of the organization.

Interestingly, it was indeed with Tree House Youth Theatre that Belliveau had one of his first major acting opportunities that really proved inspirational in him

choosing stage work in general as his career. He landed the role of the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz back in the early 1990s and something clicked.

“The seed was kind of planted in high school,” he said, adding that it was during the time of his graduation that he was also auditioning for The Wizard of Oz. He was thrilled with the opportunity, especially as he didn’t feel he had a particularly stellar audition.

He attended Red Deer College and performed there as a student in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as Judah, Billy Bigelow in Carousel, and was cast as the clown in A Winter’s Tale.

Moving in this direction wasn’t without its challenges. Even as a professional actor, sometimes the work is plentiful – not so much at other times. “I grew up conservatively and traditionally so I didn’t really know how to pursue an artistic identity,” he said.

He later moved to Toronto, which really brought to the surface his improvisational skills. “I found out that I had a huge affinity for it. It’s ‘limitless’ theatre.”

He moved back to Red Deer and started performing regularly, plus the improv training in Toronto served him well with his passionate involvement with the Red Deer-based Bull Skit.

Meanwhile, Belliveau has taught, written, directed and acted in countless performances.

These days, he’s eager to begin rehearsals on the next Tree House Youth Theatre production for later this fall. “I think I can grow the company through more awareness in the community. I want to help artists and also to pull out of them the talents that are already in them – waiting to come out. I think I can be a big part of that.

“They have great energy, they have great ideas,” he said. “I’m really excited about the potential and the realization of the growth of the company. I’m excited about seeing these kids work and grow and just about building the company. I’m all about building.”

Tree House Youth Theatre was created in 1988 and was the brainchild of Richard O’Brien who was head of the Theatre Arts Program at Red Deer College (RDC).

The aim of the program was to build theatrical interest and foster skills in the young people of Central Alberta. Tree House Productions ran during the College off-season using RDC theatre staff and students to support most elements of the production.

tral Alberta Theatre (CAT). CAT continued to provide guest artists for several years, providing support and encouragement to the young performers.

With the hiring of Gould in 2005, Tree House entered a new era of exploration and creation, building a love of the theatre arts in the youth of Central Alberta.

In 2009, Gould was also instrumental in securing a rehearsal and performance space in the Scott Block in downtown Red Deer.

Over Gould’s 10 years as artistic director he produced, directed (and in some cases wrote) over one dozen productions including Fiddler on the Roof Jr. (2007), Ho, Ho, Oh (2007), The Wind in the Willows (2009), Last Known Position (2011), Sleeping Beauty (2012), Red Deer River Stories (2013) – Red Deer’s official play of the centennial – and Sweeney Todd (2014) to mention a few. editor@reddeerexpress.com

Family shares story for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express If one thing was made clear to Trish and Nick Robichaud since the time their three-year-old daughter Brielle was diagnosed with a brain tumor in early January it would be the importance of blood donors.

With September marking Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Robichauds stepped forward to share their story at the Canadian Blood Services Red Deer clinic last week, encouraging the public to understand the impact blood donation can have to families such as theirs.

A special donating session in honour of Brielle is being held Sept. 23rd at the Red Deer clinic from 3:15 to 7 p.m. Appointments to donate blood can be made by calling 1-888-2-DONATE, online at www.blood.ca or by downloading the Give Blood app.

Their journey began when little Brielle began to complain of headaches. A fever and a signiďŹ cant drop in energy levels followed. The morning the fever started, Trish recalls going into Brielle’s room after hearing her mumble something. “She looked like her back was bothering her - I picked her up and she was kind of arching her back a bit,â€? said Trish during an interview with Express co-editor Mark Weber in February. “I could tell it was stiff. She also said her head hurt, so with the fever, I thought she must have meningitis.â€?

This same day the family journeyed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary where doctors immediately ordered tests.

It was here doctors would diagnose Brielle with pilomyxoid astrocytoma – a benign tumor blocking the drainage of her cerebral spinal uid. The tumor,

located in the centre of her brain, touches the pituitary gland, her hypothalamus and her optic chasm.

Originally doctors planned to operate the same day, with intent to remove the aggressive and fast growing tumor. However, following the initial six-hour surgery it became apparent it would be too risky of an operation. Eventually some of the tumor was removed, leaving 18 months of chemotherapy to follow.

Jhoanna Del Rosario, territory manager for CBS emphasized the importance of blood donation during Trish and Brielle’s visit last Thursday. “On average someone with childhood cancer will require around ďŹ ve units of blood – that’s ďŹ ve donors to save that one patient alone - for leukemia, which is the most common form of childhood cancer, we need around eight units of blood a week to save a patient’s life,â€? explained Del Rosario. “So that is eight donors every week – that’s why we are calling out to the people of Red Deer to rally their friends and family in support of donating blood for those affected by childhood cancer. “Canadian Blood Services is encouraging Canadians to roll up their sleeves and donate blood for the month of September in honour of all the children affected by childhood cancer as well as those who have passed away.â€?

Trish explained because the tumor was largely inoperable and with Brielle being too young for radiation, this left only chemotherapy.

So in Brielle’s case chemotherapy knocks down blood counts - it not only affects the tumor by killing it off, but it also kills off red blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelets – all of those very

Since January, Brielle as had four different surgeries and chemotherapy. The Robichauds have watched as the tumor shrunk more than 60%.

“Before this happened I had donated blood only once – I always thought it was kind of inconvenient and it hurts a little bit, but now that I have watched that blood ow into my daughter’s veins and watched it revive her,â€? said Brielle’s mom. “When she needs a transfusion she gets pale, exhausted, feverish and just terrible. “But after we come home from the hospital I have this healthy, rosey, pink-cheeked, pink-lipped kid who has energy and can play again,â€? she said.

“I just remember sitting at the hospital watching as someone’s A+ blood owed down the tube into my daughter and I couldn’t help but wonder who it was who took the time to help revive my little girl.â€?

Liberal candidate named in Red Deer – Mountain View

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Members of the Red Deer – Mountain View Federal Liberal Association recently nominated Chandra Kastern as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate in Red Deer – Mountain View for the upcoming election.

CHANDRA KASTERN Kastern has a background in massage therapy has well as non-profit management. She has served as the president of the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta, and the chair of the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance.

She currently serves as the executive director of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra Association.

“I am excited to begin building the movement for real change in Red Deer – Mountain View. I am happy to be campaigning on Justin Trudeau’s plan for fairness for the middle class, and for putting in place a better, Liberal government in Ottawa this fall,” she said. “I look forward to getting out and meeting as many people in the riding as possible.”

Within her work in massage therapy, Kastern found herself in the work of policy development and advocacy, and she learned through that time that, “If you want to change something, then do. “I know that when I really feel like I can change something I will. A lot of times it starts with some really ‘grassroots’ kind of effort,” she said. “And I really feel like that’s what I’m doing as a candidate. “I care about the riding and I care about the cause in terms of changing government,” she added.

As for the Liberal party, Kastern said that the party’s values best fit with her own.

“I appreciate some parts of the Conservative party and I appreciate some parts of the NDP party, but there is way too much for me to reconcile with in both of

those camps. So I come back to the middle – with (the Liberal party), I don’t really have to reconcile anything,” she said. “It resonates with me more than any other party.

“And very rarely does a leader come across who can capture everyone’s attention,” she said of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.

“I think that is what I really like about Justin Trudeau.

Number two – I can appreciate his plight – he was raised in politics so of course he has an interest in it. But at the same time, he has quite the challenge in front of him in terms of making his own name out of a name that is already a household name. I appreciate that he acknowledges that and is kind of carrying the torch for that interest in politics and that whole ‘get up and stand up’ for what you believe in. I really think that’s what he’s doing. “Number three – he’s authentic,” she said. “He has that air of authenticity about him that I really appreciate.”

Kastern notes that with the new riding configuration, there will be a careful balance between urban and rural issues. “Starting with Red Deer, I think there is a huge issue with homelessness and poverty and the lack of reduction of both – and a lack of an acknowledgement about the reduction in both,” she said. “On the heels of that would be the middle class.

“And this is where the Liberal party resonates with me is that whole idea of fairness for the middle class – that’s where I’m at.

“I think issues of the middle class are totally relevant to Red Deer.”

MPs can also advocate for issues that are of a provincial nature as well. “I think it would be a grievous error to have the same party in charge of both the province and the country.

Hence the need for choice, and the need for a different party. “I really think there is an awakening happening on the federal level.

But it’s one thing to tweet about it and facebook about it, it’s another thing to get out and vote,” she added in terms of past overall voter apathy. That in itself is an issue she’d like to bring attention to as well over the coming weeks, and it stems in part from the perceived

negativity of politics in general, she said.

But with, for example, the shift in Alberta’s political persuasion earlier this year, the October vote is far from a sure bet. “Things in our country are not how I remember them being, and not where I would currently identify with as a Canadian.”

OPINION September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Childhood Cancer Awareness Month marks the month of September, and it’s an ideal time to both reflect on the realities of both incidents of the disease in our kids but also the strides that are being taken in the scientific community to combat it.

The Canadian Cancer Society designates September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the organization describes it also as a time to educate the public about pediatric cancers.

Fifty years ago, almost all children diagnosed with cancer had little hope of survival. Because of research, today about 85% of kids with the most common types of cancer will go on to lead healthy lives.

However, not all forms of cancer are as well understood. Research is therefore the key to discovering more about how cancer behaves and how we can help cure it.

According to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, there are about 10,000 children living with cancer in Canada today. Each

year, about 1,500 cases are diagnosed.

Leukemias, tumors of the brain, nervous/lymphatic system, kidneys, bones and muscles are the most common childhood cancers. In Canada, childhood cancer remains responsible for more deaths from one year through adolescence than any other disease. Leukemia is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in children, comprising some 30% of the total new cases diagnosed each year.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital also points out children are not simply smaller adults. Some cancers almost never strike after the age of five. Others occur most often in teenagers.

Even when kids get cancers that adults get, like lymphoma, they must be treated differently. There are also over a dozen types of childhood cancers, and countless subtypes, making it more challenging for researchers to find cures.

It’s also a different scenario when mak-

ing a diagnosis in a child, officials say.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, as different cancers grow or spread, they cause different signs and symptoms depending on the type of cancer and its size, location and effect on nearby tissues or organs. Cancer can also occur in organs deep within the body. These cancers may not cause signs or symptoms right away and may not become apparent until discovered by a doctor during a routine checkup.

The Society also points out that cancers in children are often difficult to recognize.

Parents are often the first to notice that something is wrong with a child. That comes from largely from those everyday observances in your child - any change from their normal behaviour or health that persists or is not easily explained should be checked by the child’s doctor.

Needless to say, there is still a long ways to go. “Despite advances in research, childhood cancer is still the number one

non-communicable disease killing children today,” said Neal Rourke, a volunteer with Childhood Cancer International and also part of a new Canadian alliance called the Big Book of Care - a nation-wide coalition of 16 children’s cancer groups that have joined forces and pooled resources to raise awareness, funds and support for children affected by cancer. The Big Book of Care is a Canada-wide partnership of organizations that work to eliminate childhood cancer and support the families and children who are affected by it. “Every child battling cancer has a story, and we are here to share those stories,” notes the web site.

In honour of Canadian children with cancer, fundraising and awareness initiatives are being organized across Canada during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. It’s time to remember that it’s far from being just an adult disease.

In the United States, the principal inflation measure tracked by the Federal Reserve sits at barely 1% despite an expanding economy and a tightening labour market. In Japan and the Eurozone, central banks have set policy interest rates at zero and are aggressively pumping money into the economy to avoid deflation – defined as a generalized fall in prices.

In both the UK and Canada, the short-term policy interest rates directly controlled by central banks remain near all-time lows.

Almost everywhere, financial markets seem to be discounting the prospect of higher inflation.

FINLAYSON recently observed, even today, some six years after the bottom of the 2008-09 slump, “There are profound secular and cyclical disinflationary forces at work in the global economy.”

Looking ahead, an argument can be made that we should worry less about the prospect of escalating costs across multiple markets for goods, services, labour, and raw materials.

One is an expectation of slower growth in most of the western economies, coupled with a diminution in projected growth for the world economy as a whole.

It is striking that published forecasts from central banks, international agencies, and private sector organizations such as the McKinsey Global Institute all point in the same direction: average economic growth rates, both globally and in the major western economies, will diminish in the coming decades, compared to the 60-year period that ended with the 2008-09 global downturn.

Population aging and declining labour force growth are factors in such assessments. In a sluggish economic environment, aggregate demand is less likely to bump up against supply constraints – the situation that typically leads to higher inflation. This is doubly true given ongoing advances in technology which are adding to supply capacity in some industries.

A second reason why in-

flation is likely to be lower in the future than in the past lies in the burgeoning ranks of retirees.

As people approach and then enter into retirement, many naturally fear outliving their ‘nest eggs.’ This is the case in countries like Canada and the United States, where dwindling proportions of the population have access to guaranteed defined benefit pensions. Inflation is a primary risk to the economic comfort of retired households.

Stated somewhat differently, the political constituency for very low inflation is large, and is set to grow over time. This suggests that a scenario of accelerating inflation is becoming less likely in many countries, because of the political priorities of aging electorates. A third reason why inflation rates have downshifted and may well stay

unusually low is the waning power of labour.

Economists have found that the share of national income accruing to workers has fallen in many countries – particularly since the 1980s. Weaker unions and the greater role that imports play in meeting local demand are part of the explanation.

But more important factors are the impact of technological innovation and the declining real cost of capital – two closely linked trends that are prompting huge numbers of firms to replace labour with machines and technology.

To the extent that workers collectively have less bargaining power, the prospect of ‘cost-push’ inflation driven by broadly rising real wages becomes increasingly remote. Wage pressures have been notably muted in the United

States, even as America’s economy has steadily expanded and the unemployment rate has dropped back to the 5% range.

Financial markets in most countries continue to anticipate lower-for-longer interest rates.

Such a view is consistent with a future in which inflation trends below the levels seen in previous economic cycles.

As we approach the last few months of 2015, the most pressing economic worry for central bankers and finance ministers is not how to contain inflation today or tomorrow, but rather what can be done to achieve even a moderate pace of economic growth over the medium term.

Memorial tennis tournament set to run Sept. 12th

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Honouring the memory of a local woman who had a passion for tennis, the seventh annual Thelma Smith Memorial Tournament runs this Saturday at the Red Deer Tennis Club. This year’s event, which begins at about 10 a.m., is in honour of Les Duffy and Fernando Bustamante who were dedicated members of the Club at one time as well. There will be three draw times and the day wraps up with a potluck supper after the tourney ends around 5 p.m.

Duffy was a member with the seniors for a number of years, and another one of his passions was the old-time hockey club, explained Mary Gardiner, a Club member and also a director on the Club’s board.

“He was a realtor in Red Deer for a number of years, and he had a terrific sense of humour.” Duffy passed away in 2009.

Bustamante, who passed away in 2013, came from Chile a number of years ago and always played tennis. “He was a member for a great number of years, and his two sons played as well. They also still live in Red Deer.”

Ultimately, the tourney is a wonderful time for members young and old to get together, play some tennis and just catch up with each other. There is also a time set apart to honour the ones who the particular tournament is in honour of.

“It’s a very popular tournament,” said Gardiner, who has been a part of the organization for about 40 years herself.

Typically, about 50 players take part. “And

those courts are busy all day.”

The tournament will be held with the same format as previous years, which was started in memory of Thelma Smith, who passed away in June of 2009. Smith was a dedicated supporter of the Red Deer Tennis Club, and it was decided an annual tennis tourney was a fitting way to honour her years of involvement as a fan and a player.

“I remember her well – we won several medals together in the Alberta Summer Games,” said Gardiner. Meanwhile, players are of all levels from advanced to intermediate to beginner. And one need not be a Club member to take part in the tournament, she said. “The cost is $15.”

The Club is a non-profit organization of

volunteers dedicated to promoting tennis and sportsmanship in a club setting. Membership is consistently over 200 adults and juniors. It’s located next to the Recreation Centre, across the street from the Red Deer Curling Club and Farmers Market, and kitty-corner to the Red Deer Lodge.

Its history in the City stretches back more than a century, said Gardiner adding that the first Red Deer Tennis Club members played on courts in the City square.

To be precise, the Club is in its 115th year.

“Tennis is growing so much, and we have so many juniors – some on the international level – that are coming out of this Club because of our coaches. So we are looking to expand.”

All business kilometers used for company vehicles should be recorded in a log book. You can keep it in your vehicle, along with a pen, so it is easy to take a quick second to write down odometer readings. This way you will be able to prove to CRA what amount the vehicle was used for business. By doing this the company cannot claim any further fuel, repairs, insurance, etc. paid in relation to your personal vehicle as this is what the reimbursement is for.

Loaves and Fishes receives new roof thanks to donors

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Aside from preparing approximately 200 meals a day, operating an outreach program and maintaining regular financial obligations, the Loaves and Fishes Benevolent Society recently had to replace the roof of their existing facility.

The organization operates on a tight budget in the best of times, so the roof was an unexpected and large expense, prior to the donations of community members.

Michelle Jacques, Raymond Forget and Marco Gilbert of a local roofing company stepped up with the help of their friend Cindy Mandrusiak, a local business owner, to donate approximately $15,000 worth of materials and labour.

“Cindy (Mandrusiak) saw it in the paper that Loaves and Fishes was in need of a roof. She called me and said, ‘Michelle, if I donated material, would you do the labour?’

“So we came and measured the roof, and came up with a plan and we’re here,” explained Jacques.

The Society’s roof was falling apart after severe water damage due to flooding. Shingles were peeling, water was seeping into offices and the Society had no extra money in the budget to address these issues.

Most of the damage had occurred on the south side of the building’s roof and affected a number of offices and storage areas in the building.

Halina Jarvis, executive director of

Loaves and Fishes, and the rest of the staff and volunteers expressed their thankfulness to the donors for their services. Without them, the organization could have had to fundraise for a number of months before doing the necessary repairs to the roof.

“It’s always a struggle financially and with staffing. It’s a vicious circle because we don’t have enough funds to help the staff, so they are all stretched. We’re all working way over what we should work, and most are working for minimum wage,” Jarvis said.

“It’s hard to get people who can come and work the hours that we need. We really could use double the staff that we have now.”

Jarvis expressed her concern over not having the new roof by winter and her extreme gratitude for the community donations that will bring a new roof before the snow falls.

Loaves and Fishes operates a number of programs including daily dinners, preparing school lunches for various schools, and the Outreach program where they connect clients to community services. To operate these programs, volunteers and donations are always needed at the Society.

“Anything people can volunteer for, anything at all, would be great. Outreach would be great – we need people to come in and answer more phones.

“I could use people to help file some more. I have one gal who files for us, but she can’t be here everyday. These people are giving of themselves in their normal

lives,” Jarvis explained.

“Anybody can come in and do anything – if they have a skill, if they have a heart to come and help, they’re welcome to come.”

The expansion of the online hunting atlas The Wildlife Trust Fund provides natural habitat for hunting and fishing In 1983, the executive of the Alberta Fish and Game Association had the foresight to see that critical habitat was disappearing at a rapid rate in Alberta and they set out to create the Wildlife Trust Fund, the province’s first land trust.

Since those humble beginnings, the Wildlife Trust Fund has grown to include over 80 properties across the province, that encompass over 36,000 acres of important fish and wildlife habitat.

The Wildlife Trust Fund Properties are found from the extreme southern reaches of the province all the way north to Manning. At the heart of the Wildlife Trust Fund are the members, clubs and zones of the Alberta Fish and Game Association and these land acquisitions were only made possible through their generous contributions and tireless fundraising efforts.

POLICE BRIEFS

RCMP CONTAINMENT IN SPRINGBROOK

On Sept. 3rd, Blackfalds RCMP responded to the report of a distraught man in a residential neighbourhood of Springbrook. The matter ended with the apparent self-inflicted death of one male.

Residents were kept at a distance from the incident while police contained the area but were later permitted back to their homes by police. RCMP Sgt. Whitney Benoit said, “The cooperation of the residents of the neighbourhood, and the media, is greatly appreciated by the RCMP during this serious incident.”

No additional details are expected to be released on this matter.

targeting the driving behaviours of young drivers in the city, with special attention on speed, seatbelt infractions and distracted driving.

According to statistics from the Alberta Office of Traffic Safety, drivers aged 14 - 24 are more likely to commit errors such as following too closely, running off the road, making a left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle and crossing the centre line.

Alberta traffic statistics (from the Alberta Office of Traffic Safety) include the following - one in five new drivers are involved in a collision during their first two years of driving.

Over five years, 206 drivers between the ages of 14 to 24 were killed and 12,421 were injured in collisions (2009-2013). More than onehalf of casualty collisions involving a young driver (aged 14 to 24) occurred in the months of May through October. Fatal collisions involving a young driver occurred most often in the month of September (2009-2013).

OFFICERS ARREST PAIR IN STOLEN TRUCK On Aug. 29th, Red Deer RCMP arrested a man and woman after they attempted to evade police in a stolen truck, first by speeding through a residential neighbourhood, then by abandoning the truck and jumping into the Red Deer River.

The incident began at 11:30 a.m. when RCMP located a man driving a stolen truck in the area of Welton Crescent in the West Park neighbourhood. The truck, which had been stolen from a Kentwood residence on Aug. 28th, refused to stop when police activated their emergency equipment, and sped through a playground zone on 57th Ave.; police did not pursue the truck due to public safety concerns, but quickly located the abandoned truck in the Cronquist Business Park parked off the road near the river.

As the male driver and female passenger ran to the river and attempted to swim away, RCMP and Police Dog Services contained both sides of the river and the area under the Taylor Drive bridge. The female suspect was taken into custody as she exited the river, but the male suspect stayed in the river until the City of Red Deer Emergency Services dispatched a rescue boat with police on board to pick

him up. The man was treated at the hospital after being in the cold water for a prolonged period of time, and was then released into police custody.

Rory Richard Forslund, 30, has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, obstructing/resisting a peace officer, driving a motor vehicle while uninsured and driving while unauthorized.

Forslund was also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation, and three other warrants including one for failing to appear in court. He was remanded in custody. The passenger, Amanda Buckingham, 28, of Red Deer, was wanted on eight warrants out of Red Deer and Stettler, predominantly for drug possession, failing to appear in court, and failing to comply with court-ordered conditions.

Buckingham will appear in Alberta Provincial court in Red Deer on Sept. 24th to speak to the Stettler charges, and will appear in court for trial on Nov. 20th at 1:30 p.m. for the Red Deer charges.

paired that police would be out looking for them. And then they found them.

The following drivers face a number of Criminal Code charges, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle over 80 mg%.

They include four men between the ages of 21 – 30, two men between the ages of 31 – 40, two men between the ages of 41 – 46 and three women between the ages of 24 – 46. RCMP encountered five impaired drivers while on patrol, observing erratic driving and other traffic infractions. In five more cases, good citizens reported drivers they believed to be intoxicated and police located them and determined they were impaired.

In yet another case, an RCMP member encountered a car driving the wrong way on Ross Street at 10 p.m. on Aug. 29th. That driver collided with the police cruiser at a low speed and was arrested for impaired driving, and for driving while suspended as a result of a previous impaired driving charge.

RCMP thank the community for continuing to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 with a license plate and description of the vehicle, the driver, and the direction of travel.

CENTRAL ALBERTA MAN FACES CHARGES On Aug. 26th as a result of an ongoing investigation, the Blackfalds RCMP, with the assistance of RCMP members from Innisfail, Ponoka, Sylvan Lake and Calgary ERT, executed a search warrant on a rural property in Red Deer County.

As a result of the search on this property the RCMP recovered a 2011 load trailer, 2011 Polaris ATV side by side, Kubota Land Pride Mower, Kubota Mower and various

prohibited weapons. Investigation is continuing.

Billyjack Williams of Red Deer County was charged with four counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000.

POLICE ARREST MAN WANTED ON 33 WARRANTS RCMP arrested a Red Deer man who was wanted on 33 warrants after locating him in a stolen truck the morning of Aug. 27th.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at 50th Ave. and 28th St. When police arrived, they discovered that the truck in question had been reported stolen the morning of Aug. 26th from the West Park neighbourhood in Red Deer.

RCMP contained the area and took the driver of the truck, Brian Elliott, 28, into custody without incident. Elliott was wanted on 33 warrants out of Red Deer for a variety of Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act offences that stemmed from a number of separate incidents.

Those warrants included charges of drug possession, possession for the purpose of trafficking, impaired driving, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property, theft, credit card theft, fraud, uttering forged documents, a number of failures to appear in court, and failing to comply with numerous courtimposed conditions. As well as facing these 33 charges in court, Elliott faces eight new charges as a result of the events of Aug. 27th.

These charges include six counts of failing to comply with recognizance, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and operating motor vehicle while disqualified from doing so.

Recalling the legacy of the Berkhamsted School September marks the traditional return to school.

Over the past 125 years, there have been many schools in Red Deer, ranging from a tiny log structure on the northwest corner of what is now West Park, to the multi-million dollar edifices on the east

side of the City.

However, one of the most unique places of learning in the community was the Berkhamsted School, which operated from the turn of the last century until the First World War, on what is now the southeastern edge of Red Deer.

Berkhamsted was a unique educational initiative started by Rev. Thomas C. Fry, headmaster of the Berkhamsted School in Hertfordshire, England.

The original Berkhamsted had been founded in 1541.

Over the centuries, it

became well-known as an independent educational institution for both young men and women in Great Britain. In 1900, Rev. Fry made a visit to Red Deer to visit a friend, Frederick Simpson. He was impressed by the tremendous agricultural potential of the area.

DAWE He decided that the district would be a great place to establish a special agricultural school, primarily for students of the Berkhamsted School back in England. He would use it to teach these young men how to become farmers in the Canadian West. Hence, Rev. Fry purchased Simpson’s farm and also some land belonging to William Cassels, a rather eccentric local naturalist.

Over the next few years, Rev. Fry expanded his land holdings until he had some 1,120 acres. Once back in England, Rev. Fry began to select the students who he thought would be good candidates for the new school at Red Deer.

These students had to have good marks and be capable of strenuous physical labour. They had to agree to cover their passage to Canada out of their own pockets and pay room and board for up to two years.

However, Rev. Fry also agreed to give them a small wage for their work on the farm.

Simpson agreed to act as an interim farm manager.

He was soon replaced by Ben Green, a second cousin to Mrs. Fry. Green did not like the work. He was also discouraged by the low number of students willing to move from England to the farm school. Hence, he decided to quit and persuaded Rev. Fry to replace him with one of the senior students, Alfred Pointer.

The situation deteriorated under Pointer. He did not have the experience to take on the management of

such a large operation.

Moreover, he became embroiled in bitter disputes with several of the students.

With the Berkhamsted School and Farm losing money, and with Pointer being poor with financial accounting, a decision was made to replace him.

Pointer took over a nearby farm that had been homesteaded by John Cowell, editor of the Alberta (Red Deer) Advocate and later the first Clerk of the Alberta Legislature.

Rev. Fry then entered into an agreement with John Eversole, who had been managing Spruce Bluff Farm (current site of the Morrisroe subdivision) for George F. Root, a wealthy rancher.

Fry offered Eversole not only a good salary, but also a share of the profits of the farm, as an incentive to help turn it into a paying operation. Eversole and his wife Gertrude were very capable and hard working. They soon turned Berkhamsted around.

However, the outbreak of the First World War caused the remaining students to leave, mainly to enlist.

The school came to an end. The Eversoles ran the farm until after the Second World War. Among the local alumni of the Red Deer Berkhamsted School were George Pearkes, recipient of the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery in the First World War and later Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Another was Lionel Page, commanding officer of the Lord Strathcona Horse and later Commander in Chief of the Canadian Army’s Atlantic Command during the Second World War. There is an image of the Berkhamsted School on display at the Collicutt Centre.

ENTERTAINMENT Exciting times for local band Boom Chucka Boys

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Local band The Boom Chucka Boys have plenty to celebrate these days heading into the Canadian Country Music Awards with an armload of nominations.

The awards will air from Halifax on CBC Sept. 13th. The guys have been nominated for Group of the Year, Album Design, and Producer of the Year. They also recently were ACMA Award Winners for Group of the Year and Rising Star.

Influenced by artists like Dierks Bentley, Zac Brown Band, Dwight Yoakam, CCR, Bruce Springsteen, and Johnny Cash, the band’s original music leaves its mark on audiences with a unique sound. Front man Ryan Langlois stomps and moves like a classic performer, throwing himself into the music. As for the recent nominations, it’s really quite the dream come true.

“I always tell people that it’s sweet because it’s an acknowledgement from your peers that you are making your way and joining the higher ranks of Canadian Country Music,” he explains, adding he is planning some comments just in case they land the top honours.

“You have to prep for it because if they call your name, you don’t want to look like an idiot up there,” he laughs, noting the show’s organizers have already told them any winners get only 45 seconds to dish out their thank you’s before the music starts playing and they must exit the stage. “It’s a friendly reminder to be prepared.”

Meanwhile, the other band members match his energy with every chord and create an enormous sound. With Joel Rathjen on lead guitar, Teddy Roy Michaylow on bass and Ben Shillabeer on the drums fans can imagine them playing stadiums, even as they enjoy seeing them up close in an intimate venue.

It’s also been a truly break-

through year as they joined forces with Royalty Records, Cache Entertainment and Sony Music Canada for their release Ramble which was produced by fellow Canadian country artist Gord Bamford, who hails from Lacombe.

“It was to kind of build on the first record. Our live shows are what we kind of predicate everything on,” he explained. “Our shows have also grown quite a lot since the first record had come out – they’ve became bigger and more exciting.

“So going into the studio, and going through a lot of the production, we very much kept in mind the live shows. We wanted it to sound ‘bigger’ than the first record.

“The production level of the record is also better and also much bigger sounding. I think the sounds are a little more mainstream than the first record was as well which was also something we wanted to do. There’s definitely more of a rock sound to the record – we are a country band, but when we play live we probably look a lot more like a rock band than a traditional country band,” he said. “I think the record reflects that really well.”

Ramble was recorded in Calgary – something he’s proud of as well, as the entire record was Canadian-made. “That’s something we didn’t necessarily have a whole lot of control over but we are really proud of it because we knew everyone in the studio and the producer and engineer.

We had also been to the studio, so there was a lot of history of people who we look up to who had also recorded there. It was definitely important and became a really cool thing.”

As for Bamford’s production, Langlois couldn’t be happier.

“That was the biggest thing – really knowing how to take our sound and not have us sell out to fit in, but to make little tweaks here and there. For me personally, he was really, really encouraging – and

The show airs this Sunday evening on CBC. for me vocally, he pushed hard but it was really good.”

For Langlois, a love for music came along early but he didn’t actually start with the guitar until his early 20s. “I definitely grew up hearing a variety of music – we grew up listening to everything from western swing to the Tragically Hip to Jethro Tull.

“For me, once I started stepping out and being willing to risk it, it snowballed really fast,” he added of his own musical explorations.

At first, it wasn’t easy to perform for people, but over time, his confidence grew and now the stage is one of his favourite places to be.

“I truly love performing. It’s the thing I love the most.”

Boys have been described as a band that doesn’t play ‘to’ the crowd, but for it. They leave everything on the stage, each and every night. It’s a genuine energy that comes from an authentic place of loving the songs and the joys of performing.

Looking back, the band took shape about five years ago - in July of 2010.

They began honing their musicianship, songwriting and performance at any live venue that would lend them a stage.

“It really all started at The Hideout in Red Deer.”

Then on a chilly night in January of 2011, Bamford happened to walk in on them in the middle of a three-set night. Before long a deal was made and The Boom

The Walkervilles meld classic R&B with modern sensibilities

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Capturing the rich and compelling musical sensibilities of an earlier era, melded with a modern pop sheen, The Walkervilles perform at the International Beer Haus on Sept. 10th.

“The music that inspires us comes from a feel-good standpoint sonically, but it often deals with some pretty heavy lyrics, or lyrics that are ‘real’ – emotional – that make you feel something. I think that’s an important part of soul music,” explains Pat Robitaille of the band’s style.

The inspiration for their name is a fascinating bit of history, too.

In the late 19th century, Detroit-based American industrialist Hiram Walker invested his wealth creating a model town on vacant land near Windsor, Ontario. The community was filled with homes for the employees of his distillery.

He exported what would soon be relabeled Canadian Club Whiskey into the U.S., dominating the market because it was cheaper to make his whiskey in Canada.

The town which surrounded the distillery was dubbed ‘Walkerville’.

Decades later, three men living near the heritage district of Walkerville were excited by another export from Detroit – the music of Motown. And eventually,

Robitaille, Michael Hargreaves and Stefan Cvetkovic joined forces to create their own brand of soul and R&B. To commemorate the legacy of Walker and as a nod to their Motown influences, they decided to name their band The Walkervilles back in 2012.

“It seems to connect with people of all ages because everyone is into the feelgood, pop side of things but at the same time, it’s reflective of older rock and roll as well,” he said.

“What I am referring to is that classic stuff from like 1960 to the early 1970s that we grew up hearing,” he said.

Living in such close proximity to Detroit also had had a huge influence on the guys, he added. “It’s coming through with this band – having an outlet that is inspired directly from what we grew up around. Being so close to Detroit has been pretty unique.

“There’s been a lot of power and energy over there.”

Looking at the classic Motown style, he notes that there is a different sensibility to the music from that era.

“It was much more innocent. It was still heavy and emotional but it was also more fun and the songs were shorter, hookier and incredibly well-written,” said Robitaille.

“And everybody dressed sharp. It was what every-

body needed. Times were tough and people wanted entertainment.

Motown was a phenomenal vehicle for all of that.”

Their self-titled debut CD Meet the Walkervilles: Live at Mackenzie Hall came out towards the end of 2012.

And continuing to create a buzz within the local music scene, it was time to record again. The group went into Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studios in Austin, Texas in the spring of 2014 to record tracks for the new record,

aptly named Soul Brothers. Recording in such a musically-rich community was again a blessing, not to mention working in Nelson’s studio. Behind the board for these sessions was Canadian blues-rocker Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Sit down Servant).

Meanwhile, Robitaille had established himself as a solo artist by his early 20s while Hargreaves and Cvetkovic led an acclaimed touring act when their paths crossed.

“When I was 18, I had the opportunity to go to the states,” he recalled. “I went to LA for a bit then to Nashville where I hung

out for a bit. That’s where I was really introduced – even more so than living in Windsor – to soul music and the greats. That’s also when my love for R&B and soul really started as well.”

Ultimately, they were signed to the same agent and would often end up on the road together. “It was inevitable that we were seeing each other,” he recalled.

And there was a connection musically. “There was a need to explore more musically and take a new risk and be inspired,” he recalls of that time in hiw own musical journey.

“The three of us were just hanging out one day

and came up with this idea to start this band that would be inspired by Motown.”

Cvetkovic agreed. “We instantly knew there was chemistry between us. But not wanting to be a cover band, we soon got down to the business of writing our own material. It was way more fitting for us to be playing our own music.”

The Walkervilles have already toured Canada extensively and made inroads into the American market.

Tools for Schools Africa presents annual Shine! event

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express In addition to lovely jewellery, accessories and a visit from Ghanaian Sophia Dauda, the annual Tools for Schools Africa Foundation fundraiser will also feature a variety of artwork this year.

The event will take place on Sept.

“The evening is a fundraiser to support girls’ and young women’s education in northern Ghana. We do what we do because we truly believe that educating women and young girls is so key to helping people in developing nations succeed, and to get out of a cycle of poverty,” explained fundraising co-chair Susan Knopp.

“The last two years it’s been down at Festival Hall but we’ve outgrown that space and we’ve moved onto the Harvest Centre.

We’ve got lots of activities and merchandise for the evening.”

Merchandise including scarves, fine jewellery, handmade jewellery, gently used art and various silent auction items will be available throughout the evening. Each year a guest comes from Ghana to speak with attendees and share stories of their involvement with Tools for Schools Africa.

“We have Sophia Dauda coming from Africa, and I think our guests are always a highlight of the event. We heard that from many people last year when Gabriella Wumnaya (a coordinator in the Ghanaian charity) was here and spoke at the event. Her message at the event was something that I think really made people believers in Tools for Schools Africa, if they weren’t already before,” said Knopp.

Dauda recently graduated from the Catholic University College of Ghana with a Bachelor of Sci-

ence Degree in Economics and Business Administration and Management.

Prior to this, her family struggled and adjusted to bring her an education. Without Tools for Schools Africa, she would not have been able to attend postsecondary.

“It’s very powerful for our event guests to hear the stories and the struggles and the lives of the women we are sponsoring.

They hear about the struggles these women face to get an education,” Knopp added.

Lyn Goertzen, chair of the organization, said that due to the sponsorship of the community for catering and space, the organization

is able to make the most of their donation to the Ghanaian girls.

“A lot of our expenses have actually been donated and covered by people in the community – we have very little overhead because we have such a generous support from the community. We have a lot of people who support us so that our expenses are very minimal for this event, and that way nearly everything we make here goes directly to the girls.”

In June, the girls who have gone through the program in Ghana are invited to re-connect over a weekend at their own Shine! event. Goertzen said that for many girls, this is an exciting part of the program and many

enjoy the mentorship aspect of the weekend.

“Every post-secondary girl attended Shine! this year. They came from far and wide to come for the weekend event. It’s a great venue for conversation about our expectations of the girls and also for their input of what they would like from us, and how the program is working,” she said.

“It’s nice that this is something that the girls look forward to – becoming a mentor to the younger girls. The older girls talk to the girls coming up and give them some hope for the future of what the younger girls could accomplish in their life. They do career counseling and work out a lot of

options for the young ones so the girls are able to see a future for themselves.”

Tools for Schools Africa Foundation provides scholarship programs and sponsors the costs of education for up to 75 girls, from primary school through high school years. Additionally, they are currently supporting/ have supported 17 young women through post-secondary.

The proceeds collected from the Canadian Shine! event go towards these scholarship programs, and help to cover the costs of admission, uniforms, shoes, supplies and sometimes housing for the girls.

Cutting back on drugs Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the response that shocks me most during my many speaking tours? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the huge combination of drugs swallowed by many North Americans. Equally amazing, most people have no idea why theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re taking them. Over-medication is dangerous. It also results in staggering costs for the health care system. So can North Americans cut back on drugs? And what non-medication cured an ailing retired minister?

JONES The ďŹ rst question to ask your doctor is why you are taking so many drugs. This seems so logical it hardly needs mentioning. After all, these same people wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think twice about asking the car mechanic what was done to correct the noise in their carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engine. So never accept a drug without asking why the body needs it.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also vital to ask the doctor how long to take a drug. For instance, one person I met had been taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for 10 years. These drugs are prescribed to ease the symptoms of severe heartburn.

But during that time the patient had never inquired nor been told whether he could stop the medication to see if his symptoms had subsided. A few months would have been an adequate trial period. And drugs such as painkillers should have a short period of consumption due to the risk of drug addiction.

Remember, as you age itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even more vital to ask questions about drugs. Age brings grey hair but also decreased ability of the liver to metabolize medication (get rid of it) and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harder for the liver to excrete it.

A high dose may therefore cause unintended consequences. Doctors usually start with a low dose prescription and increase it slowly. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always wise to ask the doctor after a period of time if the dose can be safely decreased or eliminated.

Parkinson â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Step â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n Strideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; event

A major problem today is that, due to the increasing number of drugs available, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more likely that adverse drug interactions will occur. In some cases this will decrease the effectiveness of one drug or increase the risk of a serious side effect. For example, common painkillers such a ibuprofen (Advil) used with warfarin (Coumadin), blood thinners, may increase the risk of bleeding. Â Herbal remedies can also react with prescription drugs. For instance, the publication Consumer Reports on Health says that black cohosh used to treat menopausal symptoms can increase the risk of side effects from antidepressants, blood pressure drugs and cholesterol lowering- drugs (CLDs).

Remember that any new symptom after starting a drug can be a drug side effect.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing that many people I talk to have no idea that their muscle pain and fatigue could be the result of their medication.

And what is more tragic is that some people on CLDs do not realize they may have developed Type 2 diabetes because of this medication. A Danish study of 120,000 people showed that from 25 to 50% of those taking CLDs developed this disease.

Many years ago a patient told me her father, a retired minister, was ailing. He had little desire to eat, was losing weight and sat idly in his chair day after day. His doctor had died and she could ďŹ nd no one to care for him. So I visited him in his home.

I discovered he was taking a large combination of drugs such as antidepressants and blood pressure medication, which can cause fatigue. It was possible to pitch out several of his unneeded and outdated medications. And much to his surprise, I substituted an old and tried remedy. I suggested a few ounces of wine before lunch and the evening meal. A short time later his daughter called to say he was now taking walks, had regained his appetite and was back to his normal self.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recommend this remedy for everyone. But Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m convinced in selected cases a sip of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;vinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; has a greater impact on the health of seniors than the universal tendency to over-prescribe antidepressants.

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Staff and volunteers with Parkinson Alberta are getting ready for the annual Step â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n Stride event, which takes place Sept. 12th at the Golden Circle in Red Deer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The event has been running for at least 10 years,â&#x20AC;? said Moira Cairns, client services coordinator with Parkinson Albertaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Central Alberta region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Across the province in 2014 we raised approximately $350,000. We have seven regions across the province as well.â&#x20AC;?

Registration is at 9 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will be a free family picnic, prizes for top fundraisers, door prizes and a silent auction. Folks are encouraged to sign up as teams, or just on their own as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Any funds we raise also stay in Alberta for support services, education, resources and support groups.â&#x20AC;?

According to Parkinson Alberta, Parkinson disease (PD) is a slowly progressive and chronic process.

It mainly affects parts of the brain controlling how a person moves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is the second most common neurological disorder besides Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease. We estimate well over 10,000 people in Alberta have Parkinson disease.â&#x20AC;?

Many people have symptoms between the ages of 50 and 60 years, but some have symptoms at a much younger age, others at a much older age. Over time, symptoms will get worse and may change to include more/different symptoms than when a person is ďŹ rst diagnosed. This usually happens slowly, over years, according to Parkinson Alberta. There are misconceptions about PD. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There really is no diagnosis

for Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease. There are no blood tests or lab tests. What they do is they eliminate other disorders ďŹ rst that might be related,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have to eliminate everything but Parkinson disease and that includes a medical review of the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. People may also have PD long before they receive a diagnosis.â&#x20AC;?

To date, no one knows exactly how and why PD starts. Initially, most people will notice changes on one side of the body. It may be a tremor when an arm or leg is just resting, it might be handwriting getting smaller, it may be a feeling of slowing down, a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face may lose some of its expression so they look bored or depressed, even if they are not.

Cairns said people may also notice a loss of their sense of smell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We now know that many people with PD also experience depression and anxiety. Those are called non-motor symptoms. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well over 40 per cent of people that have Parkinson disease also have depression and anxiety,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Cairns also said there are four main (motor) symptoms that a doctor will look for in making a diagnosis.

These include a tremor which is described as a trembling or shaking that is involuntary and usually seen in the hands or the legs when they are just resting.

But as Cairns pointed out, not everyone with tremor has Parkinson disease and not everyone who has Parkinson disease has a tremor.

Also, there can be slow movements, rigidity and difďŹ culties with walking and balance. Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footsteps can tend to get smaller. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They shufďŹ&#x201A;e, which can be quite dangerous actually,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But not everyone has the same symptoms. And there are over 32 non-motor symptoms.â&#x20AC;?

Winter Games means changes for speed skating club

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express With Red Deer being chosen as the host community for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, the Red Deer Speed Skating Club is looking at landing a new home.

Currently located at the outdoor speed skating oval behind the Golden Circle Senior Centre in Rotary Recreation Park, the Club would see a new facility being built at Great Chief Park where they would skate long track as well as a new facility to skate short track on at the new Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport being built near Red Deer College. The Club currently skates short track at the Kinex Arena, an aging facility built in 1967.

Having been coach of the Club for the past 14 years, Pearman explained she has watched as membership numbers went down slightly over time.

Pearman’s owner daughters Brooke, Maddison and Tess have been leaders on the national level, continuously placing well over the last 10 years at Canadian championships including landing a number of gold medals.

This past February, Tess competed at the Zone 4 Alberta Winter Games where she brought home an individual gold medal in the T2T 12/14 girls division as well as a group gold meal in the T2T Girls Relay alongside teammates Bryndell MacDougall, Kieren Gray and Stefanie Spicer.

“It’s just a great individual sport that you can do for life,” she said. “You can watch your kids go out on the ice and be racing, trying to beat the person skating next to them, then as the race finishes watch those two kids just in competition against one another get off the ice and sit and chat with one another.

“It’s just a great way for kids to make friends and stay active in the winter.”

Midget ‘AAA’ Optimist Chiefs hold try-outs last week

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express When it comes to a legacy team like the Red Deer Midget ‘AAA’ Optimist Chiefs, expectations were high for the 150 athletes who tried for the team over the last week.

This past weekend the 2012 and 2013 National ‘AAA’ champions began their try-outs at the Red Deer Arena. Over the course of the past six days, head coach Brandin Cote and his assistant coaches whittled down the massive amount of hopefuls in hopes of finding the top talent for their team.

The top 30 players will take to the ice Sept. 10th for their chance to play in the team’s annual Black & White Game. From there coaching staff will select a final 28 players to go to the Strathmore Exhibition Tournament, with the final roster being set around the third week of September.

Cote, who is now in his second season coaching the team following the retirement of long-time coach Doug Quinn, said it’s not just a player’s skill coaches are looking at. Attitude, determination, willingness to learn and a team spirit all play a part as well. “At any level a player’s attitude can be the most important part of their game,” said Cote. “You have to want to be the best, want to be successful, and you have to want and understand what it takes to win.

“At the end of the day, hockey is a game you’re supposed to enjoy - when you enjoy it and bring a positive attitude to the rink every day great things happen.”

With high expectations from the com-

munity following past team successes, Cote said it can be intimidating for players to join the team – however, it also makes the pride of playing for such a high level team much greater and adds to the team’s continuous winning culture.

“The community really embraces this team and this program - the kids take a lot of pride in the institution that is the Red Deer Midget ‘AAA’ Optimist Chiefs and so do we as coaches,” he said.

“Team success is the most important thing, teaching a team to work together and not just work toward their individual goals is huge and if you can do that with a team, then winning tends to fall right into place and take care of itself.

“To coach a winning team, and be a winning team, it means the having the consistency to come down to the rink everyday and have the willingness to put in the work and prepare for what it’s going to take.”

While Coach Cote and the Chiefs didn’t have the season he had hoped for last year, he is encouraged by their goaltending situation this year. He hopes to see the defense with more depth than it had last year adding the team has a solid group of forwards making their way up.

“Skill-wise we are there, so now we need to bring it all together and focus on who wants to be a team player and commit to getting better.”

Cote himself is no stranger to the national stage.

during his minor pro career. Following his days as on the ice as a player he spent time as an assistant coach for the Red Deer College Kings and Queens before taking over the Senior ‘A’ Bentley Generals where he rallied the team to become the 2012 Allan Cup champions.

The young coach, 34, said last season was a bit of an eye opener for him as he transitioned from coaching men to men in the making. With an age range of 15- to 18-yearolds on his team, the coach found he was going to be playing a slightly different role.

“The teaching aspect of being a coach

plays a much larger role at this level – you really have to be there for your players and be there to hold them accountable while at the same time being there for them when they need it,” said Cote who can be found off ice as a teacher at St. Patrick’s Community School.

“At this age it’s a big thing for them to be playing for a team like this and it can land them with a lot of pressure on their shoulders at a young age and as a coach part of your job is also to help alleviate some of that for them.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Take pride in the smallest of home improvements Have you ever had that feeling right after cutting your lawn – you know that puffy chest sort of pride where you look at the neighbours on either side and realize that your lawn looks the best!

This feeling may only last for a day until your neighbour realizes that your lawn is shorter than his.

He will soon scurry out to trim his blades as well but for that fleeting moment you were the king of your yard and were convinced that everyone within a few block radius could feel your superiority and bowed down to your above average horticultural skills.

We all have pride of ownership whether it is in our newly painted bedroom or in our lovely flower beds that we have nurtured all summer – this is a good thing!

It shouldn’t be confused with ego but a little bit of pride in our caretaking of our homes is something to be cherished, even

That small kernel of accomplishment sits within us and I think that we all deserve to feel a huge sense of pride in the things we can make happen in our homes.

When I bought my home the mailbox and the numbers on the house were a faded, dingy brass which was obviously a kind of throwback from 1982 when someone bought these items to put on the property.

A few weeks back I painted them in a gloss black and hung them back on the house – was I proud!

The next time the pizza guy came to visit I was certain that he must have recognized

the effort and the paint fumes I had endured to make this dramatic change on the exterior of my home.

It didn’t matter one bit to him even though he may have had an easier time reading the numbers from the street but it made me feel pretty good about making this small improvement.

Your source of pride can be anything from a recently scrubbed bathroom to a beautifully created meal for your family; we all have those areas in our hearts which make us smile inside.

Even if we never share these moments of back patting with anyone, we know that we have done a good thing and recognize that our love for our homes is reflected in our accomplishments.

It is perfectly acceptable to allow even the small things to impact our sense of well-being as it reinforces in us that we are doing good things and may even spur us

on to do even greater and more generous things for our community.

Go ahead, let it wash over you and allow yourself a moment of pride in your latest accomplishments.

Even if you never tell a soul, you will be uplifted within yourself if you give yourself a well-deserved high five.

It is okay to love your home and it is even ‘okay-er’ to spruce things up every now and then which will help you appreciate the lovely place you are allowed to inhabit.

Nobody else may even recognize what you have accomplished and the pizza guy may not show up at your door with balloons for a job well done.

But you know and you can cherish yourself – it is often the small things we allow ourselves that can bloom into bigger and bigger endeavours.

Navigating your way through shifts in home pricing There is no end of headlines citing reports by economists, think tanks, etc., quoting statistics galore about what is happening and will happen with real estate values.

All of the endless speculation does little to quell the fears of first-time homebuyers, or in many cases, current homeowners.

It is worth keeping in mind that the best predictor of what will happen tomorrow is often what happened yesterday. Certainly, the real estate market movements tend to be far less erratic than the stock market.

Although real estate transactions are also driven on emotion, the ability for the real estate market to react to short-term emotional swings does not exist in comparison to the stock market.

The process of selling a home is tedious, taking days or weeks to get to market from the time a decision is made to sell. The process of selling shares on the stock market takes seconds and thus market sentiment, rumour and whim

A recent story in the Globe and Mail traces back the story of a local Vancouver buyer currently shopping for a $3 million home.

There is a valuable lesson in this story. More than once the message conveyed by the subject, Patricia Houlihan, is, “Buy as soon as you can buy, and buy whatever you can afford to buy.”

Sage advice that just about any current homeowner would echo, along with the comment that they wish they had bought sooner.

It should be noted that it is her eighth home over a span of decades, not her very first purchase.

Although many buyers historically bought one house, maybe moving once,

and then stayed put for decades, today’s urban buyers, since the 1990s onward, have often started out with something smaller, older or perhaps even a condo and made the best of it.

As Ms. Houlihan points out, for the past few decades the typical homebuyer’s ability to save has not kept pace with property appreciation. Here’s some numbers: Five per cent down on a $200,000 purchase requires $10,000.

Even a 1% annual appreciation on the property ($2,000) represents an effective 20% gain on the cash invested.

Factor in current mortgage reduction (50% of the monthly payment) and you have another $450 per month building in equity.

Based on today’s fiveyear fixed rate of 2.64%, an income of $36,000 per year qualifies a buyer in the above scenario.

It is unlikely this person will be able to save $7,500 per year while paying rent as well.

A toehold in the market is how many of us began

since the 1990s if not the 1980s.

It is not about buying your ‘forever home’ the first time around, it is about getting a start.

Few who bought in the 80s and 90s expected granite counters and stainless appliances. It was carpet and linoleum, hardwood

and tile. The expectations of today’s first-time buyers have shifted and that has played a role in increasing prices as well.

The bottom line is that you have to start somewhere, and you have to live somewhere while working towards the dream home.

Buying less-than-desirable

homes to start with, as Ms. Houlihan did, is work to be sure.

That is okay as few of us will ever save our way to our dream home. But we can work our way there.

Here are some tips to help you put your lawn to bed for the winter: 1. Review your fertilizer options at a lawn and garden centre by reading the bag.

2. Use a quality spreader or handheld model to ensure even feeding.

3. Don’t apply if heavy rain is expected, and ensure the last application is on before the ground is frozen.

4. Fertilizer can only do its job if it’s on your lawn or garden.
