A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the Celgar Pavilion at Millennium Park was held August 28.

The opening brings to completion three years of hard work by the partners and contractors involved in the project.

Zellstoff Celgar managing director Kevin Anderson was on hand for the festivities and shared

the company’s enthusiasm for the project, “We are very proud to be able to support this project and very grateful to have the honour and privilege to have it named as our namesake, the Celgar Pavilion,” said Anderson. “We hope the pavilion will be a lasting legacy to demonstrate Celgar’s place in the community, its ongoing commitment to be here and continue to support this community.”

The facility includes the pavilion itself, a commercial kitchen, concession area and storage space for the soccer association. The facility will be avail-

able to be reserved for exclusive use through the Castlegar Community Centre, but the picnic area will be open to the public at all other times.

Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff praised the work and contribution to the city that all involved have made. “It is businesses like Zellstoff Celgar that make our city great by investing directly back into our community. I would also want to acknowledge the Rotary Clubs for all of their hard work in funding and coordinating construction of this new building,” said Chernoff.

A Nelson police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a woman after punching her unconscious in May 2014.

Cst. Drew Turner stood trial in July and Judge Richard Hewson delivered his verdict last week in Nelson Provincial Court.

A date has not yet been set for sentencing.

Turner has been on desk duty at the police station since the charge was laid last year.

Turner was off duty and in plainclothes when he stopped to help a fellow officer trying to arrest Tawny Campbell for being drunk and disorderly.

He admitted to striking Campbell hard enough for her to pass out, but argued it was a justifiable use of force.

Hewson, who accepted the testimony of three other officers, disagreed. He concluded the amount of force wasn’t justified, even making allowances for Campbell’s behaviour.

Coming to Castlegar CHELSEA NOVAK West Kootenay Advertiser

Award-winning R&B and hip hop artist Akon is coming to Castlegar.

He’ll be playing the Element Club on September 15, touring his new, yet-to-be-released album Stadium.

The album should drop next month, but don’t expect a typical release, or a typical album.

“The Stadium album is actually being released on an application next month, and all you have to do is logon to Akon.com, and then you can register to download the app,” explains Akon.

The app will have the first four albums of Stadium. Fans explore the music by choosing the first album they want to listen to, and rack up points every time they listen to unlock the next album.

“The idea was to reward the fans for what they do best, and that’s listen to the music,” says Akon.

While early plans for the album in January listed five albums—Pop, Euro, Island, World, and Urban—there are now just four albums being

released initially on the app—Island, World, Urban and House.

“The [fifth] album is an audience fan participation album where they’ll actually be able to create remixes from the four albums previous,” says Akon. “We’re gonna release that one in early 2016.”

The remixing contest for the fifth album will kick off in December, and the vocals will be released on the app for fans to download, remix, and upload back onto the app. Akon himself will choose the winning remixes.

Stadium is Akon’s only new album in seven years, since he released Freedom in December 2008.

Asked why he chose to release a multi-part album instead of multiple albums over a longer period of time, Akon said, “I’ve always been the kind of artist that was pretty much listening to and was inspired

by every, you could say, genre known to music, you know what I mean?”

“So I never even looked at music in genres up until a particular point where I got signed to a record company and they kind of separated the sound into something that they could market and promote,” he continued.

“For the audience that has never seen me perform or haven’t listened to any of my records in any other genre, they can now explore those different types of sounds that I was known for around the world.”

Akon has also been spreading the word about Akon Light-

ing Africa, a project he started with Thione Niang and Samba Bathily, and launched in February 2014. The goal of the project is to bring electricity to the 600 million Africans who don’t currently have access.

The project uses solar power to setup streets lamps in public places and private household electric systems. The hope is that school children will be able to study and do better in school, that small business will be able to expand, that healthcare will improve, roads will be safer, and there will

be greater access to information through the Internet and other communications systems.

Akon and his partners reached their initial goals for the project within six months, and since then Akon Lighting Africa has continued to expand.

Trail native Brandon Gawryletz is making the jump to the NHL as one of four new officials for the 2015-16 season.

The 32-year-old former Trail Smoke Eater along with referee Jake Brenk from Detroit Lakes, Minn. and Ontario linesmen Devin Berg and Ryan Gibbons of Vancouver signed NHL contracts this week and will don the stripes in the pre-season with the hopes of making their NHL debut early in the year.

Gawryletz has spent the past few seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) and also worked in the Central Hockey League, handling their Cup Finals in 2013 and 2014.

The six-foot, 195-pound linesman, played five seasons in the BCHL, with the Smoke Eaters and Langley Hornets. He captained the Smoke Eaters in 2003-04, also his best season, posting career highs with six goals, 27 assists, and 122 penalty minutes in 58 games.

He went on to play college hockey at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks.

Gawryletz also attended the 2014 NHL Exposure Camp, and will wear number 64.

Evgeny Romasko, will also join the NHL ranks.

Romasko spent last season splitting time between the AHL and the KHL. After working five games in the NHL last season, the Russian referee has committed to North America full-time for the upcoming season.

Brenk and Romasko fill the void left by the retirement of 26-year veteran referee Paul Devorski who worked 1,600 NHL games. Linesman Jean Morin also called it a career among the linesmen, retiring after 24 seasons.

According to Scouting the Refs website, there are a total of 48 referees in the NHL and a similar number of linesmen. Many officials under contract ref in the NHL as well as the Minor Leagues.

CPR renamed Hallets Landing as Longbeach GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

One hundred and tenth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Longbeach, on Kootenay Lake’s West Arm, was formerly called 13 Mile and Halletts Landing. The latter name was after Commander Gordon Hallett (1878-1925), one of several British naval officers who settled there beginning in 1905.

According to Kootenay Outlet Reflections, “Hallett developed a fine orchard. However he was recalled to duty during World War I. Seriously injured in naval action, he was thereafter in chronically poor health as he struggled to work his property. After his death his widow, Edith, managed the property successfully for many years.”

Hallett’s ranch is first mentioned in the Nelson Daily News of May 9, 1906, while the earliest mention of his landing is in the Daily News of Sept. 3, 1913: “Mr. Green said that a floating wharf would shortly be put in at Halletts Landing.”

Edith Winifred Smith wrote in 1962 that “Up to 1914 what is now known as Longbeach was known as 13 Mile, but when the first government wharf was built at Halletts Landing, they told us to choose a name [as] all private landings were to be given up.”

The Daily News of Nov. 25, 1913 reported: “On Monday evening last there was a meeting of the local ranchers at the residence of the Stratton brothers … It was decided a name must be found for the settlement (13 Mile) and three were at last decided on to be sent up to the CPR for their choice of one of them. The names selected were Longbeach, Cottonwood Point, and Connaught Bay.” The paper added on Feb. 25, 1914: “The name of Longbeach was the one chosen by the Canadian Pacific Railway for this settlement instead of 13 Mile and when the shed on the new government wharf is built the name will be painted upon it.”

Winifred Smith in fact suggested the winning name. Her husband, Commodore Burrard A. Smith, was another British naval officer who settled there.

Their son Eric, 97, lives in Nelson with Greta, his wife of 71 years.

LABARTHE This stop on the Columbia and Western Railway

west of Castlegar was originally known as Material Yard, and was first mentioned in the Nelson Tribune of March 27, 1900.

Eventually the Canadian Pacific Railway came up with a less generic name, as reported by the Greenwood Ledge on Dec. 10, 1908: “The station heretofore known as Material Yard, being the second station west of Castlegar Junction, on the Boundary run, has been rechristened and will in future be called Labarthe. The new name was bestowed in honor of Jules Labarthe, manager of the Trail smelter.”

Jules Labarthe (1874-1951) was born in Peoria, Ill. and studied metallurgy and chemistry at the University of Utah. According to a 1925 profile in the Engineering and Mining Journal, he came to Trail in 1897 to work as an assayer and draftsman at the smelter, where he prepared plans for the lead blast furnace.

He was promoted to assistant superintendent, then superintendent of the smelter and refinery, and finally in 1906 became general manager.

He left in 1910 to take a similar position with Mason Valley Mines Co. in Nevada and later worked in Kellogg, Idaho, Chewelah, Wash., and Superior, Ariz.

Some sources claim Labarthe was also a construction engineer on the railway that later used his name for a siding, but his biography didn’t mention it.

LAFFERTY This is another stop on the Columbia and Western Railway, a few kilometers east of Christina Lake.

According to Roger Burrows in Railway Mileposts Vol. II, it was “originally named Wade and renamed for a Rossland bank manager.”

That would be Guy Alexander Lafferty (1879-1934), who in 1912 succeeded J.S.C. Fraser at manager of the Bank of Montreal in Rossland. He did a turn as president of the Winter Carnival and owned some mining claims prior to departing about 1920.

How did his name get attached to a railway siding? Lafferty’s father, Dr. James Delamare Lafferty (1849-1920), was the Canadian Pacific Railway’s chief western surgeon and mayor of Calgary in 1890-91.

The name probably honoured the doctor more than his son.

The name survives in Lafferty Pit Road.

The earlier name might have been after CPR roadmaster Philip Wade (1865-1931), who came to Nelson from Ontario in 1902.

Cuddle Party in the Kootenays Chelsea Novak West Kootenay Advertiser

Castlegar resident Erica Scott is training to be a Cuddle Party facilitator, and has two upcoming parties. The first is in Nelson on Sept. 26, and the second is in Castlegar on Oct. 17.

At a cuddle party, a group of people get together to cuddle, but before the cuddling comes, the workshop and the ground rules.

“It’s very important that everyone involved be part of the welcome circle,” says Scott.

The welcome circle gives participants a chance to get to know each other, and it’s where the facilitator leads consent and communication exercises like, “practicing saying no, practicing hearing no, practicing asking for what you want and how to do that, and verbal consent, what that looks like and what it doesn’t look like.”

The facilitator also goes through the rules.

“Some people come to Cuddle Party just to practice saying no, because they’ve never been able to do that before, or they struggle with it in their daily lives and they just want to practice,” says Scott.

Scott started her training at a workshop in Chicago, but to complete her certification she needs to host three review parties, each with a minimum of eight participants.

She hopes that the parties in Nelson and Castlegar will have enough participants to count as her first two review parties.

The men’s 60-64 gold-medal hockey game was one such casualty of the storm. The Kootenay Glacier Kings advanced to the final after a 3-2 victory over Victoria, and were on the ice playing the Surrey Schooners for gold when the power went out and ended the game.

“We’re into the game 10-minutes and the power goes because of the storm,” said Glacier Kings forward Wayne Florko. “So the storm hit, the lights went and our game got cancelled, we couldn’t play.”

After originally being handed the silver medals by virtue of a loss to the Schooners in the round robin, the Games society changed its tune and awarded both the Glacier Kings and the Schooners gold medals due to the unavoidable and unprecedented circumstances. Their counterparts, the 55-59 Glacier Kings, also made the final, but were beaten by another tough Vancouver squad 6-3 in another arena, and would take home silver.

The Glacier King teams were especially representative of the West Kootenay-Boundary with a mix of players from Nelson, Bonnington, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland, Fruitvale, Montrose, Grand Forks, and a pair of imports from Cranbrook.

Many played with or against each other in the Western International Hockey League back in the ‘70s. Darrell St. Denis, Terry Thomas, Don Soroke, Ken Stroud, Brent Mason, and Mike Grace played with the Nelson Leafs, Florko and Dave Elliott, a Chicago Blackhawks draft pick, with the Trail Smoke Eaters, and Jim Stuart laced them up with the Spokane Flyers.

“I think guys that have always played like the competition and the real steep competition and that’s what makes it fun,” said Florko. “But what makes it even more fun is that a lot of us use to play against each other and now were playing together as a team and that is really neat. Lots of good stories and a lot of good players too.”

Zone 6 swimmers led the team accounting for one-third of West-Kootenay Boundary hardware with a total of 24 medals, including 11 gold, eight silver, and five bronze.

Marylee Banyard of Nelson led the way swimming to five gold medals in the pool and one silver, while Rossland’s Barb Roberts claimed two gold, one silver, and three bronze. Don Caskey of Grand Forks took home three gold, two silver, and a bronze, while Joan Hooper of Christina

Lake captured a gold and two silver medals, and Nelson’s June Johnston won a pair of silver medals.

Cycling: Castlegar cyclists Brian Marsh won three gold medals, David Leffelaar captured a silver and two bronze in 55-59, and Nelson’s Chris Desjardins claimed one gold and two silver in 6064.

Trail’s Rino DeBiasio, 80-84, pedaled to three silver medals, while Sharisse Kyle of Nelson won three silver medals in women’s 55-59, and Trail’s Karen Lees won gold in the hill climb and bronze in 60-64 cycling time trials. Joan Thompson from Christina Lake also won bronze.

Curling: Fruitvale curlers Paul and Marnie Devlin captured gold along with Castlegar’s Jim Swanson and Verna Chernoff in the 65+ mixed curling.

Golf: Salmo’s Terry Hearne was golden in men’s 75-79 golf, carding low net, while Doreen Barlow from Christina Lake won silver in 80+ low gross, and Nelson’s Howie Ridge took bronze in men’s 70-74.

Horseshoes: Trail’s Dorothy Harrold captured gold in 33’ Horseshoes, and Jim Harrold took silver in 40’ horseshoes.

Tennis: Ron Cameron of Trail captured gold in Men’s 80+ singles, while Monique Pellerin won silver in both the 65-69 and 70-74 singles.

The tandem of Clarke and Lambert won silver in Men’s 80-84 doubles.

Track: Donald Currie from the Slocan Valley won three gold and three silver in Track and Field, and Cheryl Closkey of Castlegar captured two silver and a bronze medal.

Archery: Grand Forks archer Larry Podmoroff took aim at two gold medals in 70-74 Recurve, while Keith Stetsko of Crescent Valley won silver in 70-74 compound bow.

Close to 4,000 participants competed in 26 sports and activities at the annual event with the Lower Mainland running away with 565 medals, 254 gold, 180 silver, 131 bronze, to finish on top.

The 55-plus Games goes in Coquitlam next year from Sept. 20-24, 2016.

At the Pass Creek Fall Fair, one of the most popular attractions is the Dirty Diggers. Young children get a chance to sit with an adult operator on a mini-excavator or a bobcat and help the operator pick up rocks, push logs, and move earth around.

“It is a huge success,” says the fall fair organizer Donna Smith. “Kids just love it.”

But there are lots of more traditional attractions at the fall fair too, including competitions and prizes for flowers, wine, vegetables, baking, and photography.

“The one that has dropped off over the years is handiwork,” Smith says, “things like needlework and knitting. But there are still lots of lovely entries for quilts.”

“Canning is huge,” she says. “And people are getting into backyard chickens, so there

are chicken and other poultry competitions, and a backyard farm livestock display. Kids love that. They usually don’t get to see those sorts of things.”

Smith says the agricultural part of the fair has grown in the event’s 22 years because more and more people are taking up gardening. And the fair tries to give children a taste of farming lifestyle “We have ‘farmer for a day’ where kids can pick apples and dig potatoes and find eggs, and connect with where their food comes from,” Smith says.

Horse shows are an important part of the fall fair too, with a variety of both English and western events. Smith says the competitors tend to be teenagers or retired people getting back into horses.

Also: live music all day, mini-golf, a dog show, clowns, a blacksmith demo (“kids are enthralled with this”), a

$5 entry fee, and a free bus from the Castlegar museum or the rec complex.

“I like seeing the families here with so many smiles,” says Smith. “We like to bring everything in except the commercialism. It’s a good old fashioned fall fair.”

The fair runs September 26 and 27 at the Pass Creek Fair Grounds.

Pass Creek is not the only fall fair with unique attractions. The Kootenay Lake Fall Fair in Crawford Bay on Sept. 12 features goat races, in which children lead pygmy goats around a track. The goats don’t necessarily go in the direction the kids want them to, or as quickly.

And then there’s chicken bingo. A tarp is turned into a huge bingo card with coloured duct tape. Spectators buy one or several numbers. Two chickens (well-fed beforehand) are released onto the bingo card.

“The number on which a chicken poops first is the winning number,” says Nancy Galloway, one of the organizers of the fair.

“And we have an iron chef competition,” she says, in which the chefs may only use locally produced donated food.

“The only thing we buy for them is butter, oil, salt, and pepper. The winner gets the Spoon of Destiny, a carved wooden spoon with a brass plate on it.”

There are competi-

tions and exhibits in needlework, baking, preserves, spirits, plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and photography.

Last year’s baking competition was won by a 12-year-old, Galloway says.

And let’s not forget the no-hands pie-eating contest, raffles, a tugof-war, and live music throughout.

The Kootenay Lake Fall Fair runs September 12 from noon to 5:00 p.m at the Crawford Bay Hall.

Kootenay Book Weekend The 12th annual Kootenay Book Weekend is fast approaching, and time is running out to read the four books being discussed by September 18: Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharrat, The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King, Local Customs by Audrey Thomas and The Oil Man and the Sea by Arno Kopecky.

This year two of the titles are non-fiction, which is a change for the annual event. It begins on Friday at the Best Western Inn at 6 p.m., where there will be a discussion of King’s book as well as a social, cash bar, games and prizes.

It will be followed on Saturday by a 9:45 a.m. discussion of Sharratt’s work, followed by a lunch. Then it will pick up again for a discussion of Thomas’ book at 7 p.m.

On Sunday there will be an information meet-

ing at 9 a.m., followed by Kopecky’s talk and a wind-up lunch.

“He’s a wonderful journalist and I think anyone interested in these issues will find his talk fascinating,” said Kootenay Book Weekend’s secretary Susan Faye.

She said the weekend has been growing in popularity, something they’d like to see continue.

“Last year we had about 48 attendees, and we’ve had as many as 60 in the past,” said Faye, who urged participants to register early so they know how many to expect.

Attendees can also bring gently used books to donate to the toonie table.

They still got their happily ever after The Boundary Museum was the setting on Saturday, Aug. 29 for the Liddie Sorensen-Lawrence and Andrew Pedley wedding that had been in the planning since January 2015.

With the wildfire situation escalating, smoke filling the valley and evacuation alerts in position, the bride and groom decided to go ahead and hold their outdoor wedding as planned.

With the addition of three beautiful white circus canopies and outdoor patio gas lanterns, the wedding planners decorated the museum grounds for two days. It looked spectacular—that is, until the horrific winds arrived on Saturday at 11:35 a.m. With tents flying through the air, everyone ran to grab table settings, decorations and furnishings.

Since the fall fair was cancelled, the curling club was free and the wedding was moved. With vehicles loaded, the family and volunteers headed out with only 2-1/2 hours to countdown.

Upon arrival at the curling club, the parking lot was filled with firefighters and several fire trucks with a scheduled meeting to take place. Firefighting groups were occupying the lower level of the building and it looked like a war zone. Miraculously, by 2:30 p.m. the upper curling club facility looked amazing and this young couple had their wedding day despite mother nature’s interruption.
