Grizzly comes out of ‘Shadow’ after storm By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

“Shadow” the grizzly bear returned to her enclosure at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove on Saturday morning. She had been temporarily relocated to a safe enclosure after last weekend’s windstorm caused severe damage to her larger space and a tree had knocked down her fence. Shadow, who was brought to the zoo as an orphaned cub by conservation officers, had not been a danger to anyone while her fence was down and instead had been frightened by the crashing trees and had tried to hide. “We have done an extensive amount of work in her enclosure, cleaning up shrubbery and such, so she should be extremely excited and it will be like coming out to a new home for her,” said general manager Jody Henderson. Special food treats were laid out by zoo staff in her enclosure for her to enjoy, and portions of the fallen trees were also left for her to climb on.

Storm cleanup continues here By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Wondering what to do with all the branches, tree trunks and stumps left behind by Saturday’s wind storm? Residents in the Township’s collection zone are asked to put leaves and twigs into their Green Can. Smaller branches must be bundled with string. Large piles of branches, tree trunks and stumps piled on boulevards throughout the Township will be collected by municipal crews over the coming weeks. All residents within the Township may call 604-532-7300 to arrange for pick up if storm-related debris has not been cleared by Sept. 14. If there are any large branches, trees, or hanging debris on or above a roadway, call the Township. Crews are still out in full force clearing downed trees all over Langley, with Allard Crescent being among the hardest hit areas. The Township is also asking people to put their spoiled food into organic waste containers for pick up. Meat should be taken out of its packaging before it is discarded. More than 750,000 BC Hydro customers were left without power on Saturday, making it the largest outage in this province’s history. The float homes in Fort Langley were the last to have power restored, leaving residents without potable water for four days. Many homes in the rural areas were also without Telus and Shaw services for more than a week.

“Shadow” the grizzly bear found all sorts of food treats laid out for her in her reconstructed enclosure and pond on Saturday. A tree which was blown across her fenced area by last Saturday’s windstorm was removed and the fence rebuilt.

Police teach drivers the ‘ABCs’ Aldergrove Star

RCMP will be out in full force, ready to teach a lesson to drivers who don’t follow the ABCs of back to school. RCMP want drivers to remember their ABCs, now that school is back in session as of Tuesday, Sept. 8. “A” is for attention; “B” is for ‘Be’ patient and “C” is for children. Lessons will include: fines, demerit points, driving prohibitions, jail, or — in the worst case scenario — the injury or

death of a child, said Cpl. Ronda Rempel of the BC RCMP traffic services. In B.C., 78 children aged five to 18 are injured in crashes in school or playground zones every year. September’s arrival means more children will be on or near roadways and drivers need to get out of ‘summer mode’ quickly, said Rempel. During the first week, school times vary across the province, so drivers are warned to be alert and to prepare for kids

arriving and leaving school at all times of the day. Drivers who are distracted, might fail to see a child running across the street or a stopped school bus. Tragedy can happen in the blink of an eye or in many cases, a glance at a text. “Put the coffee and breakfast sandwich down. Lipstick and mascara can wait. Keep both of your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road,” said Rempel. Police will be enforcing the 30 km/h school zones this month.
