Comox firefighters save Alberni homes

Specialized training, equipment and the efforts of a firefighting crew prevented all but one Dog Mountain home from going up in flames KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

While close to 450 hectares of forest on Dog Mountain have gone up in flames, only one cabin was destroyed thanks to the efforts of six Comox firefighters.

Considering the 21 cabins located within those 450 hectares, Comox Valley fire Chief Gord Schreiner is calling his crew’s mission a success.

“We got here Sunday (July 5) afternoon,” said Schreiner.

His crew is a six-man team from the Comox Valley Fire Department that spent a week installing sprinkler units on homes at risk of burning in the Dog Mountain blaze.

“The Comox Fire Department started one of the first structural protection teams on the Island,” said Schreiner.

While he’s the fire chief for the town of Comox, he was in the Alberni Valley last month on behalf of the provincial office of the fire commissioner.

While Schreiner’s working with his own crew this time, he’s worked with different fire departments across the province.

call the office of the fire commissioner who will then send someone like me to the area,” Schreiner said.

“There are a dozen of us in the province who have been trained to do the assessments.”

Working together with the Wildfire Service, the decision will be made as to what structures need protection.

Dog Mountain turned out to be a more challenging case than usual, said Schreiner.

“It’s one of the more challenging ones

I’ve seen because of the topography here and because it’s only accessible by water,” said Schreiner.

“When I showed up on Sunday it looked fairly serious. The first day was hectic, (July 7) was a much easier day.”

A mix of municipal fire fighting and water works, the crew sets up a structural protection unit at the homes that needed protection.

“The guys are all structural firefighters.

They have an FPA 1001 training, which is a couple years of training,” said

The Raise-a-Reader Campaign is to raise funds for Literacy programs in Port Alberni.

Schreiner. At this level, they’re trained or typical municipal fire fighting.

“On top of that, they take a specialty course called structural fire protection,” said Schreiner.

“That’s all dealing with these small pumps.”

The crew’s equipment consists largely of small sprinkler pipes and long lengths of hose.

“We end up with a very small pump and miles and miles of hose with all these different fittings and plumbing,” said

“The guys are trained in how to put all of that together and basically how to operate the systems.”

The equipment doesn’t come cheap: it’s $70,000-80,000 and that doesn’t include the $50,000 truck that carts it all around.

“There’s easily thousands of feet of hose in several different sizes,” said Schreiner.

With the easy availability of water, the crew poured thousands of gallons of water per cabin.

water so thousands and thousands of gallons were poured on those houses.”

Houses have to be wet down thoroughly to ensure that they can’t catch fire.

“We’ll have water pouring off the roof,” said Schreiner.

“We’d have a hose wrapped – Gord around a hose and at least one sprinkler per side and then a couple more around.”

Fuel for the pumps is more of an issue.

“If this was a bigger situation for forestry they’d have a campsite with a fuel truck set up,” said Schreiner.

Instead, the crew

had to buy fuel at local gas stations.

“That means we’re putting fuel in five gallon buckets and carrying it over to our sites.”

They also suspended their lives to help fight the Dog Mountain blaze.

Five of the six are Schreiner volunteers and were on leave from their day jobs.

“They’re putting their lives on hold.”

Six structures were protected with Comox crew’s equipment on July 6 and two more were protected throughout the next few days.

That one simple find inspired her to look through the cluttered assortment on the racks and see what other treasures she could discover. She collected a few more items that put a smile on her face and that had me grinning as well. Second-hand shopping is enjoyable when you have the time and you’re in the mood.

It’s certainly not efficient or all that productive because you don’t always see anything you want or need. But if you think of it more like a leisure activity that may or may not result in stumbling upon a bargain that you love,

it can be a delightful way to spend time together.

The stigma that used to accompany this activity appears to have vanished.

People from all walks of life and income levels buy from thrift shops, consignment stores, flea markets, auctions, yard sales or off the internet and not necessarily for the bargains.

Sometimes they’re looking for a unique item or retro piece that’s not available new. Other times the eco-friendly aspect of buying recycled items is the appeal.

And then there are the people who take great pleasure in the creativity and imagination it evokes.

If or when you find a cache you can also visit the website afterwards and write a little note on the page for the cache. You can write whatever you like about whatever you like, saying things like where you are from or anything else that occurs to you.

To use the Geocaching website, you need to sign up.

But membership is free. In signing up you give your name and email address and choose a handle you will be known as.

Stats are kept on each member. If you visit another part of the world and find geocaches it will be recorded in your stats too.

Geocaching is worldwide in scope, from Sri Lanka to Bolivia.

It is a wonderful way to explore the Alberni Valley and anywhere you go on holiday.

If you are like me, geocaching is a pastime that is kind of off the radar. But it can be a fun and engaging hobby and it is easy to get started.

If you have a handheld GPS unit you can do it. They aren’t that expensive compared to what you can spend on some other hobbies. You can get one for around $200.

Dewayne Parfitt has been a fan for quite a number of years. He says that the local geocachers are a quiet bunch that does their thing behind the scenes. They are not easily recognized because each has their own “handle” and don’t use their own names. However, in the past there have been events where the local enthusiasts have met. For those who may never have heard of geocaching, it’s basically a high tech scavenger hunt.

One geocacher goes out somewhere and hides a small parcel somewhere and then registers it on the Geocaching.com website.

“These parcels are anywhere from the size of a fingernail to size of a truck,” Parfitt says.

If you want to find a cache, you would to Geocaching.com and pick it. You would either print out the latitude and longitude or download the info to your GPS unit. Then you’d use your unit to get close to the cache and start looking.

Around the Port Alberni area Parfitt estimates that there are 400 or so caches.

Each one of them is rated in two ways from one to five on the Geocaching website.

It is it easy to find and easy to get to, it is rated one and one. If it is very hard to find and very hard to get to, it is rated five and five. And then there is every combination in between. When you find a cache, you can open it and see what is in it. Generally it

I agreed. It was overwhelming.

We stayed though, and I helped her browse through a rack of children’s clothes from which we found a brand name denim jacket that looked identical to the one she had her eye on at the mall a few months earlier. She was impressed.

“This is only $3.99,” she said excitedly.

“It’s supposed to be 50 bucks.”

“See what I mean?” I asked. “Someone paid full price for this and didn’t want it anymore and donated it to the store. You could buy this and a dozen other things in here for what

My idea of shopping is making a list, going to a store that has everything I need, purchasing the items and then rushing home. My 12 year old daughter’s idea of shopping is going to a ton of different stores for hours on end and trying on clothes she neither needs nor has enough money to buy. Fortunately she has some good friends who love to participate in that allday activity with her.

They call it window shopping.

The first time I heard that phrase I was probably about the same age Daisy is now and it was from an episode of my favourite TV show Mary Tyler Moore, in which Mary took her landlord’s young daughter out for a funfilled day of looking at things while not spending a dime.

That’s kind of what Daisy and her friends do as well, but they also try on clothes, take chelfies and text them to me.

What are chelfies?

They’re selfies from change rooms.

“Do you love it?” she titled a recent picture of herself wearing an adorable dress I actually did love.

“Yes,” I texted back, knowing she had some birthday money in her purse. “How much?”

“Too much,” she said. “I’m not in the market to buy today anyway. We’re just looking and getting ideas.”

Getting ideas for what I wasn’t sure, but Daisy’s always had a thing for fashion and has expressed her own sense of style since she was a toddler. For that reason I introduced her to thrift and consignment store shopping years ago.

She wasn’t keen on the idea initially.

CHOICES DL: Returning CHOICES families will be contacted by their teacher-advisor during the week of September 8 regarding startup procedures. New applicants should contact Mr. Sean Petersen at 723-3744. It is possible for students in grades 8-12 at ADSS to take more courses by distance or online through CHOICES while still attending ADSS. These students should contact their school counselor or Mr. Peterson directly TRANSPORTATION: On Tuesday, September 8, bus transportation will be provided on all routes with pick-up approximately one hour later than regularly scheduled in the morning.
