Welcome to the Fair
T
he Saanich Fair is Western Canada’s oldest continuous agricultural Fair and is marking its 148th year in 2015. This year’s theme is “Take a Spin at the Fair” with a focus on llamas and alpacas and how their wool is used in the craft of spinning. The Fair provides a wonderful outing for all ages. Come on out and experience the country farm atmosphere. New this year is the Kidz Zone, a huge tent under which can be found radio controlled farm vehicles, pedal tractors, a colouring wall and much more. Find it behind the main stage. There are food booths on offer. There are many farm animals to see and rides available for the young and faint of heart. Of course, there is a great deal of entertainment to amuse you and get your toes tapping. The Fair also has markets, exhibits and more! This year, there is once again a full lineup of entertainers on stage and wandering around the grounds. There will be cows, llamas, emus, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, pheasants, rabbits, alpacas, donkeys and cavies for all to see. The Midway rides, food booths and vendor stalls are also big attractions all weekend. Having trouble finding your car in the parking lot at the end of your stay? There will be farm signs posted to show you what area you are parked in. May you have a wonderful stay at our event and plan to come back again.

n estimated 45,000 people will walk through the gates of the Saanich Fair over the three days of the 148th agricultural event. The Fair takes place Sept. 5 to 7 at the Saanich Fairgrounds in Central Saanich, and is a highlight event of the year for fans of animals, great food, amusement rides and games and so much more. Linda Dorman, office co-ordinator of the Saanich Fairground says organizers of the Fair start their work getting ready for the masses in January of each year — booking new entertainment acts, confirming the return of popular attractions and events and coming up with new ideas to keep the Fair fresh, year after year. This year is no exception, as the Fair has added its new Kidz Zone — a huge tent next to the main stage with all kinds of farm and agriculture related activi-
ties for children. You can read a little bit about the Kidz Zone later in this program. As this year’s theme is “Take a Spin at the Fair,” Dorman says there will be plenty to see and do when it comes to alpacas, llamas and their wool. She says there will be shearing demonstrations by regional animal owners, as well as information on how that wool is spun by craftspeople. Music is again centre stage at the Saanich Fair. Plenty of acts have returned to entertain the crowds and organizers have brought in two new, exciting acts: Jesse Roper (on stage Saturday at 8 p.m.) and Honeymoon Suite (Sunday at 8:30 p.m.). Pulling everything together behind the scenes are the hundreds of volunteers who put in countless hours to make it all happen smoothly. Dorman says she
estimates they have around 500 people — some regulars and others who are either new or part-time — who volunteer at the Fair each year. They do all the heavy lifting — the gardening, cleaning, painting, equipment moving, setup and take down. They act as convenors at the various displays around the Fair, helping people by offering information about each area. Without volunteers, putting on the Saanich Fair would be a much harder job. Dorman says preparations are looking good and the Fair is ready to open the gates to an appreciative public. Be sure to hold onto this guide for information about what’s happening and what can be found over the three days of the 148th Saanich Fair. By Steven Heywood, News staff

Llamas making a difference Llamas used for pet therapy, hospitals and homes

lamas and alpacas will be this year’s focus at the Saanich Fair and convener of the llama section, Lavinia Stevens of Millstream Llama Farm will be talking llamas used for pet therapy. It was at the Saanich Fair where Stevens developed her interest in Llamas. She had originally wanted a donkey but her husband encouraged her to get a llama and so she purchased Wallace, a pet therapy animal as her first on the farm. Wallace visited many of the old folks homes and hospitals, shedding a positive light on many people- old and young. “He was absolutely amazing,” said Stevens. She recalled one time in particular when they visited the Gorge Rehabilitation Centre. There was a young man sitting in a wheelchair and she headed right for him, Wallace beside her and asked if he wished to give him a pat. The young man said no, because he didn’t want his hands to shake and, in turn, scare Wallace. It was later that the nurse told Stevens that this was the first time the man had spoken in four months. “There’s something about them, they have this kind of calmness and it seems to spread. They give that off. So the people like this young man, they’re not worried they are going to make a mistake when they’re talking, they just have this animal there and it’s quite amazing, the stuff that they can do,” said Stevens. Stevens later added more llamas and then alpacas to

her farm, primarily focussing on the llamas. She has 18 llamas and four alpacas now. This year’s Saanich Fair is particularly exciting for Stevens, as it’s the first time the llamas and alpacas are the feature animal. She has been attending the Fair for 20 years and has been showing the llamas to the people. She has been a convener for 15 years and will be educating the public this year on llamas used for pet therapy. There will also be other farms from around B.C. and the Island that will take on a specific subject relating to llamas and alpacas and what you can do with them, such as showing, education, llamas as a lifestyle, spinning wool and more. Stevens said there are three main questions that people ask about llamas and alpacas and that is: what’s

the difference between a llama and alpaca; what do you do with them, and; do they spit?
The answers being that alpacas are smaller than llamas and have a different ear and tail set and are normally bred strictly for their fibre. In terms of what can be done with each, they have many different roles and they only spit when they are agitated at the other llamas or alpacas. They typically live between 15 to 20 years and Stevens said that they are fairly easy to train. “They’re easy to train if you’re willing to spend the time with them, they’re really quite intelligent.” Stevens said that in terms of what you can do with either animal, more is done with llamas — such as pet therapy, sheep guiding along with the use of their fibre. She said alpacas are now starting to do some pet therapy but tend to be more skittish than the llama. Continued on page 6

or 2015, organizers of the Saanich Fair have signed two great acts to headline the agricultural event. Jesse Roper takes to the main stage on Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Canadian rockers Honeymoon Suite perform Sunday night at 8:30 p.m.
While those are the headliners at this year’s Saanich Fair, there are plenty of other performers on stage and around the fairgrounds all weekend long. Quick profiles of all of the performers begin here, and can be read throughout this program.
Honeymoon Suite Johnnie Dee formed the first incarnation of Honeymoon Suite in Toronto in 1981, with original drummer Mike Lengyell and established the nucleus of the band. They added three other players to roundout the lineup with bass, keyboards and guitar. They worked hard in that first year but the lineup was short lived and changes were already in the air. In 1982, Johnnie was introduced to Derry Grehan by manager Steve Prendergast. Deciding to work together, they re-formed Honeymoon Suite adding Ray Coburn on keys and then Grehan’s former Steve Blimkie and the Reason bandmate Dave Betts on drums. In 1983 they decided to enter the Homegrown Contest put on yearly by Toronto’s Q107-FM radio station so Prendergast approached his friend and producer Tom Treumuth to produce a song for them. Based on the buying public’s response, New Girl Now won the contest and Bob Roper at WEA Canada was so impressed with the song and response that he signed the band right away. Although a session player named Brian Brackstone played bass on the album, the band soon found themselves a permanent bassist in ex-Toronto member Gary Lalonde. Originally scheduled for release on Valentines Day, the milestone first album was released in June of 1984. Throughout 1983 and 1984 Honeymoon Suite toured Canada and the US, consistently headlining club gigs and opening for such acts as Billy Idol, April Wine, Laura Branigan, Jethro Tull, The Kinks, and Bryan Adams. In 1984 the band
Honeymoon Suite performs Sunday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 p.m. at the Saanich Fairgrounds. was nominated for the ‘Most Promising Group’ Juno Award. Propelled by the success of more singles from the album, 1985 saw the band begin to headline gigs throughout Ontario and the rest of Canada. A highlight was the presentation of an award at the 1985 Junos. By this time the first album had achieved platinum sales status. Almost 22 years later the album has now sold close to 400,000 units in Canada alone. Honeymoon Suites second album was released on Valentine’s Day 1986. The Big Prize featured a rare appearance by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson.
It went platinum in Canada almost immediately and started selling steadily in the US. 1986 also saw the band win a gold award for ‘Best Live Act’ at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, the ‘Group Of The Year’ Juno and headline more dates in both Canada and some northern States For album number three, the band went to Los Angeles in the winter of 1987 to record with Ted Templeman (Little Feat, The Doobie Brothers, Van Halen). The result of all the hard work was Racing After Midnight, a slightly harder-edged
more guitar oriented album that spawned a European tour with Status Quo and a headlining tour of Canada. A ‘best of’ album was released on Warner in Canada as part of their Essentials series. A new ‘best of’ Honeymoon Suite DVD featuring all their videos and live concert footage is also in the works. May 2007 saw the return of the original line up (Ray Coburn, Dave Betts and Gary Lalonde). Honeymoon Suite continues to tour and has released Clifton Hill in the summer of 2008. — courtesy Honeymoon Suite

Alpacas shorn head to toe for their wool Continued from page 4
In terms of the use of wool, she said it doesn’t differ much between the two. When alpacas are shorn from head to toe, they give three to four pounds of fibre. When the llamas are shaved, the hair on their legs is of no use and is either left alone or trimmed. Stevens said the body of the animal is rated best from one to three, one being the best place to collect the hair which is the body. The neck follows in second with the legs last. She will have some hats, scarves, socks and ponchos available for sale in her section at the Saanich Fair. When it comes to training the animals for pet therapy, she said that you have to have an animal that is fairly bulletproof as a lot goes on the different facilities (hospitals, old age homes). They are usually trained with a halter and leash, similar to horses. Stevens doesn’t do the pet therapy anymore, as Wallace died, but she may start one of her younger llamas in the training for that in the near future. “People just love it, they relate to them somehow.” By Carlie Connolly/News staff

ictoria, B.C.’s Jesse Roper is magnetic. With an explosive live show, the genuine quality and charisma of his versatile blues rooted soul, rock and country funk is as approachable as his charm. Quickly gaining momentum, the wheels on Roper’s faithful van keep turning, chronicling a year of extensive touring and success of becoming a major festival draw. The nostalgic may appreciate his throw back vibe akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan and vintage Texas blues, however, Roper’s music remains current, the organic rawness of his vocals and guitar over shadowing any preconceived stereotypes made of blues musicians. His youthful energy captivates audiences while his knock out live performance blows them away. With a critically acclaimed full length album (Son of John) under his belt, Roper is releasing his highly anticipated sophomore, Red Bird, in 2015 with Blue Heron/Warner. Without losing the sentimental and vintage authenticity of blues, the new album is blazing its own path in the music scene not unlike modern yet retro influenced musicians such as the Black Keys and Jack White. An exporting artist with a solid team, a major radio campaign and a non-stop touring itinerary, Roper’s career is rapidly gaining strength, quickly becoming a staple on modern rock radio. Starting the guitar at six years old, Roper soon mastered songs of heroes like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin by ear. Battling with stage fright, he was thrown out onto the stage with sweaty palms and a queasy stomach which was quickly overshadowed by the audience’s overwhelmingly positive reaction. Incapable of holding back, Roper always delivers the show of his life whether it be headlining at major festivals in front of thousands of fans such as

Since I came to live on the Peninsula, one of the annual events which I have most enjoyed is the three day Saanich Fair. My children looked forward to it every year, loving the animal events and the exhibits. I think it is the emphasis on agriculture and community involvement that makes it so special. The variety of activities, the competitions and the way the event represents the end of summer calls visitors from all over the region. Many North Saanich residents participate in the baking, preserving, food, and flower growing competitions. Children ride horses and show livestock. I very much look forward to seeing the crowds again this year, enjoying the local harvest and greeting one another during the wonderful days.

Doctor Bones Blues Project
Doctor Bones is a Victoria blues/gospel blues band with a mission to bring uplifting music to people who live and love the blues. The band’s repertoire includes blues funk, jazzy blues and blues rock for greater appeal. They have played B.C. fairs and festivals and local bars but mostly give back to the community by playing at various
fundraisers, downtown service agencies and prisons. Returning to the Fair, the band features Dale Manason (guitar, vocals), Jack Funk (drums), Anthony Reynolds (bass, vocals), John Bones (harp, vocals), David Nicol (keyboard) and Gail Bones (vocals, percussion). Find information and music at doctorbonesblues.com.
Dan the One Man Band Fairs, exhibitions, schools, sporting events, grand openings, private parties, corporate events and festivals, Dan the One Man Band’s career has spanned more than two decades and five continents. Dan Duguay credits his success with the fact that he is passionate about music and he loves to see people laugh and have fun. Dan caught the performance bug in his early teen years when he discovered his singing voice. For the next few years he could often be found singing and playing for anyone who would listen. Once he decided to get other parts of his body in on the orchestration his destiny was sealed. Even though he has been fortunate enough to play music for a living and has performed literally thousands of shows and travelled to every habitable continent, he still gets the biggest thrill from the spontaneity and interaction with the audience. The ability to roll with the punches and leave the audience with music in their hearts may explain why Dan the One Man Band is invited back time and again to festivals and events.

Rukus
Rukus has been performing Golden Oldies for more than 25 years. Since 1981 they have played to enthusiastic audiences of all ages playing in almost every venue in and around Victoria. Highlights through the years include opening for Buddy Knox’s 60th birthday party bash in 1993, winning the 1999 ‘Battle Of The Bands’ competition out of 16 bands, working with Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame disc jockey Red Robinson on three different occasions and setting the attendance record for the Government House
“Music On The Lawn” outdoor concert series in 2006. Rukus has also played on shows with Tommy Sands, Bobby Curtola, The Coasters, Susan Jacks, Randy Bachman, as well as Buddy Knox. With five members they are able to re-create a wide variety of the sights and sounds of the Golden Age of Rock ‘N’ Roll, from Elvis to the Beatles and everything in-between. Boasting an almost unbelievable 200 years of combined stage experience, they promise a fun night of dancing and entertainment.
Boogaloo En Orbit Boogaloo En Orbit is an original Latin Jazz, Twist, Boogaloo sixpiece band that’s just made for dancing. Based in Victoria, Boogaloo En Orbit keeps ‘em dancing and keeps ‘em laughing with original conga line music with a Chicano Aztlanian edge from urban Southern California. Their songs are new, entertaining, funny, at times profound and always danceable.

Craig Henderson Trio Craig Henderson is a 20 year-old singer/pianist from Victoria, B.C. He fronts his jazz trio, accompanied by his first jazz piano teacher, Bill Kent, on the bass, and his father, Gordon Henderson, on the guitar. They are currently a regular fixture at the Bengal Lounge at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

Tight Hair Disco Tight Hair is a power house line up of stellar musicians that bring classic disco to your ears, heart and brain with the hope that it translates to some serious moves on the dance floor. The current lineup is: Jaclyn Hull, vocals; Bonehoof, guitar and vocals; Brendan Pye, drums and vocals; Evert Pater, bass, and; Jungle Cat, piano, synths and Rhodes. Their band likes include: dancing. Cuban heels, good times and no bad vibes. Tight Hair encourages the ridiculous as much as they encourage the audience to wear 70’s attire and big hair. Get dressed up. Come to their shows. Have a real good time!
