Grizzly incident strikes chord in local hunting community Chad Dueck has surgery in Calgary, recovering after attack

TREVOR CRAWLEY

There is good news coming out of Calgary regarding the grizzly mauling of a local man. Chad Dueck is out of surgery and is expected to be discharged within the next few days where he will return home to Cranbrook. Chad, a local bow hunter who was elk hunting on Tuesday

night, was attacked by a grizzly bear with cubs out near Pritchard Road. Chad was with a friend in separate areas, however, the friend heard the cries for help during the mauling and was able to get him to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. From there, he was airlifted to Calgary.

Police investigate election signs theft C A R O LYN G R A N T

Election signs have been popping up in and around Kimberley since the writ dropped in August. And as surely as every election campaign, whether municipal, provincial or federal, brings out the signs, they often bring vandalism to signs as well. Kimberley RCMP are investigating the theft of several election signs in Kimberley.

Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel reports that signs disappeared from around Kimberley and Marysville last week. And it’s not just a prank — you could be charged. “Police would like to remind persons that the removal of election signs is an offence and charges could be pursued,” Newel said.

No preliminary hearing for Blackmore

Polygamy case heads straight to trial in Cranbrook, no date set CANADIAN PRESS

A lawyer prosecuting the accused polygamist leader of a fundamentalist Mormon commune has opted to forego a preliminary inquiry and head straight to trial. The Ministry of the Attorney General has signed off on special prosecutor Peter Wilson’s request to

proceed with a direct indictment against Winston Blackmore, who allegedly has more than two dozen wives. A preliminary hearing is intended to determine whether there is enough evidence to take a case to trial. But the prosecution can avoid that route if the attor-
