Land use amendments given third reading

Rimbey town council has unanimously given the nod to land use amendments, which will ultimately see a land parcel in the northwest corner town designated for a senior’s lodge and a wet pond.

Council’s stamp of approval for the bylaw amendments came on the heels of a public hearing held prior to the council meeting held Aug. 24.

The council chambers were packed for the public hearing and several objections were raised regarding the bylaws.

However, council, after some discussion, agreed to comply with a recommendation from administration and proceed with the third reading of both amended bylaws. One of the bylaws was amended so the land could be subdivided and a portion of it re-designated to municipal reserve. The other bylaw was changed so the subdivision could be approved, allowing Rimoka, who owns the entire land parcel, to transfer the municipal reserve portion containing a wet pond back to the town.

In a letter from Rimoka Housing Foundation, board chairman Paul McLauchlin, requested the bylaw amendments.

He said Rimoka Foundation owns the land parcel, but only wants a portion of

it for the planned 80-unit seniors’ lodge. The rest of the parcel, which is 2.74 acres, would be beneficial if it were changed to municiple reserve and contained a wet pond. He noted the wet pond will be an aesthetic and ecological feature of the senior’s lodge.

McLauchlin, who was at the meeting said he is pleased with council’s decision, noting the lodge and wet pond is a “public good project.”

He is pleased the Town of Rimbey, Ponoka County, the Town of Ponoka, Rimoka Housing Foundation and developer SJC are all working together.

“We are using one of the Rimoka Foundation’s facilities in Ponoka as collateral for a $3.5 million dollar bank loan. That is the foundation’s contribution to the project.

The town and SJC are jointly in the process of completing Rimstone Drive which will be the access to the seniors lodge. Ponoka County will assume the responsibility of the design and construction of the wet pond using internal resources,” he said.

Town planner Liz Armitage is in favor of the wet pond.

“It is not just a big hole in the ground. It is a place people will want to be at.

I would be happy to sit on a bench and eat my lunch there.”

Treena Mielke On The Other Side As September begins to flaunt her lovely golden face for all to see, gardeners, all proud and only barely bragging, continue to haul in their bountiful harvests, triumphantly dropping them by the bushel at her feet.

This is the season when the fertile ground, properly watered and warmed by the willing rays of the summer sun, produces all kinds of nice surprises.

Now is the time carrots, their orange stalks often twisted together as if in some kind of curious orgy, potatoes, of all shapes and sizes, beets, tomatoes on the vine and onions all seem to be readily available at one’s very own backyard garden

their grandparents and anyone else who happened to be in the neighborhood.

Under such lavish attention, their garden grew.

And grew!

Last time they showed me their pumpkin, it had turned into a thing possessed, taking over the entire back yard with a frenzy that made the growing power of Jack and the Beanstalk pale by comparison.

The boys were immensely proud, and, if the truth be known, somewhat bewildered by their own gardening skills.

I, too, was amazed and humbled by these little munchkins, who brought their grandma to shame at her own non-existent skills in the garden.

I have always been impressed with vegetable gardens and, even more so, with the people who grew them. Several times,

I have attempted to join those coveted ranks, but never seemed to make it to the harvesting part, due to one unexplained thing or another.

I remember the gardens of my childhood, which, even then, always belonged to someone else. In fact, it was in my neighbor’s garden where my short-lived career as a child thief began and ended.

I was about six or seven years old and my brother a few years older when I committed my heinous crime. It was probably my brother, my partner in crime, who was the mastermind behind the whole thing, but I can’t be sure. Being older, he was, for sure, the leader. I was just hungry.

I don’t remember the how or the why, only that somehow we ended up in our neighbor’s garden.

Stretched before us, beg-

ging to be eaten, were rows and rows of peas, their plump, ready to burst, pods glistening in the sun. With no one around to witness our swift plummet into crime, we quickly began grabbing peas by the handfuls, slinking off with our bounty, finally hiding, like true criminals, in an old abandoned car.

We ate our fill that afternoon, and I don’t ever remember being reprimanded, but only how delicious those stolen peas tasted.

Years later I still smile when I think back to that long ago summer’s day when my brother and I were up to no good in the pea patch.

But, as delicious as those stolen peas tasted, I am most grateful my grandchildren are learning at a young age an ageless truth!

Thoughts on the explosion of the Ashley Madison hack scandal

“It is true, you do reap what you sow,” I’m thinking, as I get to sample all this out of the garden goodness.

No doubt, the next best thing to being a gardener is being a friend of a gardener, or, in my case the grandma of gardeners.

They started out helping their mom, these two little gardener gnomes, ages four and six. They brought their spades, a watering can, a handful of seeds and smiles as bright as the sun itself, and went to work.

As for the potatoes, they just kind of threw in a great many seed potatoes, covered them up, and went off to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of milk.

But every day they took time out of their serious play to water their garden, their little bodies bent over their tasks with all the seriousness of a farmer tending his crops.

And every day they watched. And waited.

And when the tiny seeds took form and sprouted, they marveled and showed them off to their playmates,

I read a few articles, columns, and social media posts on the Ashley Madison hack scandal—and I’m captivated by every word. I feel that the scandal has currently exploded beyond anyone’s complete understanding. The alleged statistics, the reports, and the sheer volume of cheat-

ers is astounding. The lists of government, university, political, and personal email accounts associated with the data hack is sweltering. There seems to be a lot of raw data that link many professionals, educators, and normal people to the infidelity website.

I believe that people too easily feel that they can hide behind his or her four digit screen passwords, online aliases, fake profiles, and hidden email accounts.

Any safe can be opened with the right tools. A slice of a person’s personality, desires, and needs cannot be hidden in the corners of the internet—we carry ourselves where ever we stroll.

The hack and data theft from the website that adver-

tises “Life is short. Have an Affair.” was illegal—a lot of the reporting is based off of information obtained criminally. The true nature of user traffic, emails attached to infidelity accounts, and the names of Ashley Madison users may never correctly surface. Listening to the hackers is like listening to the testimony of a thief—while he holds a stolen loaf of bread.

I understand that the infidelity website is a vessel for the poison of distrust and it’s the users the stir the caldron. Adultery is mentioned in the Ten Commandments and that sin is nothing new to mankind.

What I feel is really happening, as a result of the hack scandal, is that people

are reawakened to the fact that there are a lot of unhappily married people.

It is to be reaffirmed that cheating can happen without the use of an extramarital website. Any social media account can be used to assemble an affair. And affairs aren’t solely brewed through the internet: the can start at social functions, the workplace, and over a coffee at a local restaurant.

Ashley Madison is not going away; and if it does another will pop up in its place. As long as a committed person has unfulfilled needs and a credit card number, the profits will still continue to flow into the hands of the website’s owners. The psychology of adulterers needs to be ad-

dressed.

In the wake of the hack scandal, now is opportune time for the married and committed folk to look inward at his or her relationship. Adultery is a silent curse upon a couple. Only through communication can doubt, distrust, and the infidelity disease be cured.

Talking to your significant other about the relationship (whether durable or not) is a good method to avoid the disaster brewing within the profile networks of Ashley Madison or otherwise.

Affairs don’t just affect the couples involved.

Friends, coworkers, students, constituents, and family members all feel inhale the vapours of a poisoned relationship.

Boys and Girls Club introduces two new programs starting in September

We are proud to present the Sportball Multi-Sport program for grades 1 to 6 free of charge this fall!

Running Wednesdays 3:30 to 5 p.m. from September 23 to December 16 (except November 11th) at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Sportball is a non-competitive program designed to encourage lifelong physical activity and build self-confidence with a focus on fun.

All 12 sessions will be taught by certified coaches who know that kids learn best when they are enjoying themselves and have more fun when they are at the top of their game. They focus on sport fundamentals and get creative when it comes to keeping kids engaged at every level.

Interested parents can find out more about this Canadian program at www.sportball.ca and register their children for the 12 week session starting on September 3rd from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at mass registration at the Community Centre.

There will be a maximum of 20 in this program and if any spots remain after September 3 you may register through the Rimbey Recreation Department at 403-8433151. The kids will gather first in the upper auditorium for snack, stations and warm-ups and will go to the main auditorium at 4 p.m. to spend a full hour with the Sportball leaders.

This allows all students to participate, even if they need a bit of extra travel time to get there by 4. The Rimbey Early Childhood Development Coalition will also be offering free Sportball sessions for younger children 16 months to 6 years September 16th to November 4th and registration has already begun at 403-843-2030.

Fridays are about to become Funtastic as we are offering a new full-day program on Fridays when there is no scheduled school. This program is also for grades 1 to 6 and runs September 25th to December 4th (except November 13) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With a different theme each day, kids will have fun in the upper and lower auditoriums and nearby playgrounds with a unique variety of games, activities, crafts and surprises! We welcome parents to sign up their children for individual days at mass registration on September 3rd from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at a cost of $10 per day. Residents not happy with proposed wet pond and land deal for seniors’ lodge TREENA MIELKE

Rimbey and District Horticulture is joining with the Market in the Park to celebrate Apple Day in Rimbey on Sept. 5.

Like so many other great ideas, Apple Day has grown from a small thought. That thought was “ can apples grow here “? One person tried to grow an apple tree, was successful and then tried another. Soon others acknowledged the possibility and now there are many, many apple trees in this area.

A couple of years ago, the Market in the Park invested in an apple juice maker. When a representative attended an R.D.H. meeting and spoke to the group about apples in the area we found this idea fit with the R.D. H. objectives.

Now the two community groups have come together to offer apple-growers the opportunity to make those apples into apple juice. Just bring containers and apples to Pas Ka Poo Park on Sept 5, between 9 and 11am.

One good idea generates another. Some years ago, the Rimbey and District Horticulture, successfully launched a rhubarb cookbook and are now planning an apple cookbook. This is where the community gets involved as we gather those favorite apple recipes.

Just bring a recipe to the apple-juice table so that it can become part of the cookbook.

Now that the drainage issue has been looked at in detail, Rimoka (the current owner of the senior housing complex lot) is gifting back 2.744 acres, almost one third of the land purchased at a price of $36,300.00 per acre, to be used as a drainage pond. “ Johnson also questioned council’s motions at a meeting held April 29 of last year in which council forgave the developer an acre of municipal reserve and allowed the cash in lieu payment to be based on a value of $7,500.00 per acre.

“The town was entitled to that acre pursuant to a deferred caveat registration,” she said.

“Where did the value of

$7,500 come from?” Johnson questioned. “It doesn’t appear to be market value given that Ponoka County was willing to pay $36,300 per acre?”

Mayor Rick Pankiw said council’s decision was based on information provided by the administration at the time.

“As a council we rely heavily on research done by administration,” he said.

Johnson said council’s decisions demonstrate lack of forethought and planning.

“Had they just carved out the drainage pond to begin with and made the developer dedicate the land for the drainage pond instead of incorporating it into the initial lot it would have saved the taxpayers’ money and handled municipal reserve in a fair manner.”

In their written submission Don and Jeannet Hoornaert said more thought needs to be put into the plans.

“There seems to be an

awful rush to get this done.”

Earl Giebelhaus agreed.

“It is my opinion that the request to subdivide the identified property to provide a municipal reserve is premature and has not been well thought out by our Rimbey council.”

Giebelhaus appeared frustrated when he spoke at the meeting, finally throwing up his hands and walking out.

“I’m wasting my time,” he said.

Janet Boyarzin, in her letter, expressed concern about the location and size of the wet pond. She also wanted to know about safety measures.

Boyarzin who lives on 45 Ave. wanted to know how close the pond would be to her property.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said council is hearing a lot of negatives, but the primary purpose of the public hearing was to approve the amended bylaws so the lodge could

move one step closer to completion.

“It makes our position a lot stronger,” he said.

“Are we rushing this?

No!” Pankiw said all Rimoka and council were accused of dragging their feet.

“Now we’re told we’re going too fast,” he said.

An open house will be held on Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at The Peter Lougheed Centre to discuss the size and location of the wet pond.

Safety measures will also be discussed at that time.

Community members received an inside look at what it takes to safely chase severe storms last Thursday at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

Everything from where storms generally occur to the equipment the chasers use was discussed by Prairie Storm Chaser Matt Johnson during a presentation in the evening.

He said that the storms he chases are primarily in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and chasers are often a meteorologist’s eyes and ears on the ground.

His presentation included photos of severe storms in action, the armoured chase vehicles, special gear and highdefinition cameras they use to capture images and videos of the storms, and infographics of how storms form.

Johnson went over the difference between a weather watch and a warning, because he said people can confused the two concepts.

“A watch is indicating that all aspects of severe weather are there in the atmosphere, it just doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” Johnson said. “A warning means it’s imminent or occurring at that time. Watch is a heads up that something might happen, a warning is it is happening.”

The ingredients for severe storms are wind shear, moisture and heat energy and a trigger, which can be troughs or cold or warm fronts.

Johnson said what surprises people the most about storms is how quickly they can form, as he said they can be anywhere from 15 to 90 kilometres per hour.

“People are surprised by how quickly they come out, because they see blue sky and the next thing they know there’s a severe thunderstorm right above them.”

The most common storm chased after is the supercell, with the least chased after being the pulse storms, because they are unpredictable and not very strong.

As severe weather can act very unpredictably, he advises people to check the weather forecast in the morning, as forewarnings of severe weather will typically be posted by 10:30 a.m. by Environment Canada.

“Plan your day,” he said. “In the late afternoon, you want to be somewhere where you can get to shelter, if need be.”

He also encourages people to use their phones, and weather applications such as ‘Degrees.’

The application gives weather updates so people can be prepared to take action, if need be.

“It will give you a banner of either a watch or a warning, and you can be prepared that way.”

Doug Hart, a resident of the Ponoka area, was voted Red Deer-Lacombe’s federal NDP candidate on Monday.

Hart was up against Katherine Swampy of Maskwacis.

Of the 63 votes cast, it’s now known how many he defeated her by.

Hart ran under the NDP banner for the provincial Lacombe-Ponoka riding earlier this year, where he was defeated by Ron Orr of the Wildrose Party.

Now running federally, Hart will be up against incumbent Blaine Calkins of the Conservatives, and Jeff Rock of the Liberals.

The vote takes place Oct. 19.

Pas Ka Poo Park celebrates 50 years

The sun shone brightly on Pas Ka Poo Park as neighbors and friends gathered together to celebrate the park’s 50th anniversary and give recognition to individuals who have played a role in its history.

The anniversary, held Sat., Sept. 22, attracted a good crowd including MP Blaine Calkins, Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin, county councillor Nancy Hartford and town councillors Jack Webb and Brian Godlongton. Several volunteers from the park and the truck museum were also in attendance.

President of the Rimbey Historical Society Larry Varty gave credit to park administrator Cheryl Jones for a job well done.

“She is the glue that keeps our park together,” he said.

Fred Schutz, a former columnist for the Rimbey Record who spearheaded the project 50 years ago, recalled the early days of the park.

“It was an old farmsite,” he said. “It was a complete mess. There was junk all over the place.”

He is pleased with the way the park has developed in the last half a century.

“It’s come a long way in 50 years. This park was built by volunteers, not just a few, but many, many volunteers, maybe in the hundreds.”

MP Calkins said the park is amazing and a wonderful asset to the community. He noted it is an impressive historical snapshot of the area and one that even big cities would envy.

“It makes me miss my grandpa,” he said. “I haven’t seen a sawmill for eight or ten years.”

McLauchlin said the park and the way it has progressed shows what can happen when a community works together.

“This is what our community is all about,” he said.

A sawmill demonstration with Cummings sawmill was an interesting highlight of the celebration.

The sawmill was donated to the museum by Ken Smithson, who had purchased it from Wille Makotka and rebuilt it.

In 1997 the first farm and forest days at the museum were held and the working mill was one of the star attractions.

Meridian Beach canal races fun for all

The canal day festivities held at Meridian Beach, a small community on the northeast side of Gull Lake, were packed with lots of good old-fashioned fun for young and old alike.

The sun shone benevolently on the crowd who spilled out onto the shores of the canal as they cheered on the participants of the paddleboard, kayak and canoe races.

The decorated rafts that floated down the canal were truly a sight to behold and most participants were dressed the part.

‘It seems the rafts get bigger and better every year,” said Tonya McKechnie, who headed the organizing committee.

She said this is the third annual year for the event and it is proving to be very popular.

“It is a great community builder and helps get everybody together. And I think everybody had a great time.”

As well as the canal races, Travis Young from Alberta Flyboard gave a demonstration, a barbecue was held and the classic rock band, When Pigs Fly, based out of Calgary performed.

Sylvan Lake not affected by blue-green algae JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Health advisories recently issued for Pine Lake and Pigeon Lake have warned lake users that blue-green algae blooms have been found in parts of those lakes, and to avoid contact and consumption of the affected waters.

But no such advisory has been issued for Sylvan Lake, said Deena Hinshaw of Alberta Health Services, describing the conditions needed for algae blooms to form in the lake.

“Lakes at higher risk are those that have high nutrient levels,” she said.

“Where there are fertilizers going into the lake or animals or human waste going into the lake, and combined with the depth and warmth of the water, all of those things together bring up the risk.”

She added there’s a “whole series of things to happen for algae blooms to occur ... you need to have the high nutrient levels, the warm enough temperatures for growth, and a storm followed by calm is the final

“The concern is that, with a lot of increased development, it will dump stuff from the land into the lake,” he said.

Blue-green algae isn’t an imminent problem for Sylvan Lake, he added; rather, it depends on nutrient levels in the lake.

“You never know what the lake will do next,” he said. “It depends on the weather and the precipitation, and how much runoff there is, and a whole bunch of other things.”

The advisories issued for Pigeon Lake and Pine Lake strongly suggest that lake users avoid the parts of those lakes with the algae blooms due to the toxins in the water, because direct contact will likely cause symptoms such as skin irritation, runny nose and sore throat and eyes.

If ingested, lake users can experience flu-like symptoms such as headaches, diarrhea, weakness, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, abdominal cramps and — depending on how much of the toxic water is consumed — even liver damage that can result in death.

In addition, people are advised to keep pets and animal livestock away from the lake areas containing the blooms, and it is advised to limit whole fish or fish trimming consumption with fish fillets deemed safe to eat.

County looks at sewage odor issues at Bluffton

Planners with Ponoka County are looking at ways to mitigate issues of sewage odors in Bluffton homes.

Companies that collect sewage from county residents have been dumping effluent into a manhole, which sends the waste to be treated in the Bluffton sewage treatment facility. However, nearby owners have been complaining of a strong smell in their homes.

To help look at solutions the county hired ROHI Engineering to provide a cursory review and make recommendations to solve the issue.

After looking at the potential options, two of which involved installing a new manhole, Reeve Paul McLauchlin suggested companies may have to restrict the times they dump the waste.

The cost of installing a new manhole, including supplies, could be approximately $15,000 according to Randall Trites of ROHI Engineering..

CAO Charlie Cutforth added if that doesn’t work, the county may have to look into creating a permanent arrange-

ment with the Town of Rimbey to dump the waste.

Coun. Mark Matejka questioned why the county should be paying for the service when it is something from residents.

Cutforth replied he feels it is a service that will be expected of the county by residents.

County to meet with Town of Ponoka on fire services agreement A meeting between Ponoka County and the Town of Ponoka is set for Monday, Sept. 14 to negotiate a new fire services agreement.

McLauchlin said he requested the meeting to be open to the public and to allow recording secretaries to be present. At the time of publication it was not known if those requests were answered.

No show for tax penalty complaint Councillors with Ponoka County took no action on a complaint over a tax penalty after a no-show from the resident.

Residents Corrine and Kevin Gross were scheduled to speak with county council Tuesday, Aug. 25 during a regular meeting to discuss the tax penalty of $183.57.

CAO Charlie Cutforth said for the most part there are few tax penalties in the county and there are usually extenuating circumstances why taxes aren’t paid.

“As a new purchaser, under normal circumstances I would take care of that,” said Cutforth.

He said there were some issues with this account, which is why it was brought to council for decision. Initially the taxes of $1,835.65 were unpaid as the municipal address the county received from the family’s purchase of the home was incorrect, said Cutforth.

Once the correct address was found, the Gross family did pay the taxes but protested the penalty. The tax penalty remains unchanged.

Menaik Road paving The county received a $1.5 million grant to pave five and a half miles of Menaik Road.

Cutforth told council that amount will provide funding for approximately one to one and a half miles of the full project.

“We need to come up with $4 million to $4.5 million.”

A deadline is set for 2017 to use the grant money and Cutforth recommended the county start widening the road in the sprint to help prepare for the paving.

Testing out new dust suppression County planners will be testing out a new dust abatement chemical called MG 30, which is also supposed to help stabilize soil, on Wooddale Road (seven miles) and Baker Road (five miles).

Public works superintendent Herb Schwingel told council that the product is approximately five cents per litre more than the calcium product currently in use.

Schwingel added it costs approximately $8,000 per mile to use.

A review by Alberta Transportation suggested the MG 30 also helps keep aggregate in place, added Reeve Paul McLauchlin.

Cutforth said the county will test the product in the spring of 2016.

Road allowance request passes first step Council passed first reading of a road use allowance after hearing no opposition to a request by Dwayne Robins.

The request is to close half a mile of Range Road 275 south of Township Road 445. Closing and leasing that area of undeveloped road requires approval from Alberta Transportation, which is why council only approved first reading.

Cutforth expects an answer in the next few months.

Bentley Revmasters Car Club holds biggest show ever tiansen from Blackfalds (1935 Chev Truck), Barry Cunningham from Gull Lake (1929 Model A), Murray Ebeling from Lacombe (1979 Ford F-150), Barry Hanier from Red Willow (1953 Chev convertible), Merv Pidherny from Rocky (1960 Chrysler 300), Randy Screpnek from Bentley (1956 Dodge Mayfair), Alan Tomaszewsky from Camrose (1946 Chev Truck), and Ken Wigmore from Gull Lake (1956 Chev Truck).

Almost 100 donated and purchased door prizes were drawn for.

Along with the Koozin’ West Show & Shine, the Revmasters have also been coordinating the fair’s annual fireworks display on the Saturday evening. This year $16,000 donated by the usual sponsors, as well as several new ones, along with the generous donations made by local citizens, was used

to put on an extra special display in honor of Bentley’s centennial. Funds included $3,000 that the Revmasters had set aside from last year’s profits.

Rick and Donna Park and Lorne Greaves have very successfully been spearheading the show for a number of years. A new committee will be taking over the organizing of the show next year.

“We want to thank everybody who donated their time, money and / or expertise to help make this show such a huge success,” says Park. “We were humbled by it all, Thanks.”

Augmenting the car show that is staged alongside Railway Avenue is the mid-day food concession BBQ of the Bentley District volunteer fire department. It continues to be well supported.

“This was our biggest show ever with exactly 200 vehicles entered,” stated Revmasters coordinator Rick Park . “We had cars from literally all over the province, as well as the N.W.T. and Montana.”

This year Bentley Centennial pins were mounted on the trophies in honor of Bentley’s 100th anniversary and there was also a $100 bill for the100th entry. It was won

by Wayne Jacques from Bentley who had a 1984 Camaro Z-28.

Best in Show was the 1960 Chrysler 300 of Merv Pidherny from Rocky Moun-

tain House.

The Mayor’s Choice trophy went to Tom Christiansen from Blackfalds and his 1935 Chev Truck.

People’s Choice was the 1970 Chev belonging to Brad Boist from Winfield.

Heather Riviere from Yellowknife, a former Bentley resident who drove here just for the celebration and show and shine, took the Furthest Travelled Award. She had a 1995 Firebird.

The Ural Motorcycle of Melissa Fox from Bentley won the “What Else Ya’ Got” trophy.

Enid Liona Karlstrom of Hoadley, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the age of 92 years.

Enid was born on August 30, 1922 on the family farm at Bashaw, Alberta. She was united in marriage to Evert Karlstrom on July 24, 1948.

Enid was an avid gardener and quilter, and was also a very talented lady that possessed amazing handiwork with various crafts and sewing projects.

Enid will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three sons: Larry (Helen); Lorne (Lynn); and Dean, all of Hoadley; as well as five cherished grandchildren: Barb (George) Spencer, Carolyn, Leanne, Kristina, and Stewart; and one very special great granddaughter, Athena. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two brothers, Ross (Doris) Albers of Bashaw; and Lorne (Eva) Albers of Ponoka; and her sister-in-law, Eda Satre of Winfield; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Enid was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Evert in February, 2015; her parents, Emil and Emma Albers; and two sisters, Joyce and Joan.

A Gathering of Family and Friends in Celebration of Enid’s Life was held at the Liberty Hall on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. with Mr. Walter Loov, hosting.

Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. The Central Alberta Buccaneers entered the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, August 22nd, when they kicked off against the Edmonton Stallions. During the regular season, the Bucs edged the Stallions in a close 20-14 battle; this game would be no different.

During the week’s practices leading up to the game, the Bucs knew they would face adversity. Three team captains were unable to attend the game and the team faced the departure of other key personnel. Despite these setbacks, the Bucs were determined.

“I’m proud of the way we handle adversity on this team. No matter what curveball gets thrown in the way, we have rallied when needed,” said quarterback Jarrett Bursuk.

Bursuk stepped into the starting role when the original starter became unavailable for the game, another moment that tested the Bucs resilience. But, Bursuk rose to the occasion. He made key, drive extending plays, including a creative bootleg-pass that found Axsivier Lawrence deep down field. Lawrence praised the gutsy performance of Bursuk, saying that he “followed the game plan to a tee and only had one incomplete pass.”

In the first half of the game, the Bucs and Stallions traded touchdowns back and forth. While the Bucs defense brought pressure on the pony quarter back, his receivers made opportunistic catches. Despite a few goal line stops, the pirate D gave up two touchdowns and a field goal. The Bucs offense responded however, utilizing both

The second half was a game of defensive attrition. The ball was punted often by both teams, causing a battle for field position. Eventually, the Bucs would drive close enough to the Stallion end zone for the field goal unit to take formation. They tied the game in the third at 17-17. With a minute left, Tylor Johnson would split the uprights for the game winning field goal, making the score 20-17 and, as a result, earning the Bucs a semi-finals berth.

The Bucs got a helping hand from the audience during the game. Lead by Bucsannouncer, Kelly McCheyne, the bleachers were often chanting and cheering, urging the Bucs to victory. “Our fans always give us a little bit of an edge when it comes down to close games; they’re always cheering us on and giving us full support,” said Lawrence. “We have the whole community backing us and that’s relieving to know as we move forward in the playoffs,” said Bursuk.

The Bucs are on the road in order to take on the number two seeded Fort McMurray Monarchs. During regular season, the Monarchs handed the Bucs one of their two losses for the season. Defensive lineman Tony Dawson predicts the game will be a “dog fight. They are a great team. But if we come together as a unit, I like our chances.”

If the Bucs are able to top the Monarchs, it will be the first time in franchise history for the pirates to advance to finals.
