Welcome to the 44th annual Salmon Festival F

or my 16th year as Salmon Festival Society President, I would like to welcome friends from near and far to our 44th annual festival. This weekend would not be possible without the generous support of the business community and the thousands of hours put in by hundreds of various service club volunteers.

Year after year we try to improve on the previous years’ event with new ideas and more and more local talent.

This year will be no exception and should prove to be a successful and entertaining festival.

On the derby side, we have had many questions about salmon retention.

Please refer to all Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations at http:// www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca, as any violation of these regulations will result in immediate disqualification. Fishers have an obligation to educate themselves as to the most current rules and to properly identify their catch.

In past years, we have had the benefit

of a sponsor for our post-derby draw of $1,000, however, in recent years this draw has been more and more difficult to make happen.

Fortunately, a new sponsor for the Salmon Festival has stepped forward this year – BERKS’ INTERTRUCK! Exactly one month after the derby concludes, we will be drawing one winning derby ticket for this $1,000.

Regardless of whether you fished, caught a fish or won the grand prize of $15,000, you will be entered. So please feel free to purchase a derby ticket just to enter the draw! A one in 1,200 to 2,000 chance to win is pretty good odds!

This event celebrates our strong angling culture and brings together family and friends to enjoy a wonderful weekend on our rich coastal waters. This year’s festival will once again feature the famous Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue, the always popular Sunday morning Bullhead Derby as well as music and entertainment.

Chinook derby makes this ‘a real Home Partner Draw Salmon fest’ for the 44th event WIN KRISTI DOBSON ALBERNI VALLEY TIMES

The winning catch might be smaller this year, but there is still a big jackpot up for grabs at the 44th annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival.

The warm weather means lower returns of large salmon coming home to spawn, which has affected the chinook fishery.

In 2013, festival organizers were forced to hold a coho-only derby, which brought about its own challenges. Weights of winning fish varied little, being only ounces apart, and the number of entrants was lower. Last year saw a return of chinook, as well as a boost in participation. This year expects to be no different, according to Dan Washington, Salmon Festival president.

“It will definitely be a salmon fes-

tival,” Washington said.

Within the derby boundaries from Cape Beale to Amphitrite Point, derby entrants can weigh in chinook measuring 77 cm or less.

“That could be a 15-pound fish,” Washington said.

Combine that with the coho available, it could be a contending competition. In the 2013, coho-only derby, the top two winners hit the scales at 17.10 pounds. and 15.45 pounds.

“It is better when it is open for everyone,” Washington said.

He said the method of fishing for each species and the gear used is different, so it draws in greater participation.

With a $15,000 prize purse for the largest fish, Washington said it is definitely worth the $40 entry fee. A further incentive for all entrants is an additional draw of $1,000 follow-

ing the derby.

“Everyone has a chance to win despite how they performed in the derby,” Washington said.

Washington expects registrations to be on par with last year at about 1,500.

“The days of 3,000 is long gone when there were the elusive 60-pounders back then,” he said.

The Kiwanis Club is gearing up for the popular salmon barbecue and have secured 4,000 lbs. of fish. Washington expects it to sell out before closing on Labour Day. The festivities kick off on Friday, Sept. 4 and continues through the long weekend with entertainment, raffles, food and activities for children.

he Salmon Festival is Port Alberni’s community event that historically wraps up summer vacation for many families. While the fishing competitors are on the water, the grounds are the place for landlubbers of all ages to take in some entertainment, good food and opportunities to support local charities.

Once again, this year is complete with around the clock activities throughout the weekend.

Musicians Shea and Jacob will kick things off on the stage Friday night at 6 p.m. followed by the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. Cruise Control will play until 10 p.m. in between the fireworks show at dusk.

On Saturday there will be something for the kids all day. The Bounce Around will be onsite from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from noon, entertainer Heather’s Balloon Magic will roam the grounds. The stage line-up includes Bipolar Band with Lance Lapointe at 12:30 p.m., Brett Myrfield at 1:15 p.m., Bipolar Band and Lapointe again at 2 p.m., the first round of karaoke competitions from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tara Lightnin’ and Ballistic Pig at 5 p.m.

and wrapping things up at 7 p.m. is the Paul Black Band.

Sunday morning is the annual Lions Bullhead Derby for the kids beginning at 9 a.m., with the Bounce Around and Kids Corner returning at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Taking to the stage are Bluegrass Fever at 1:30 p.m., the karaoke finals at 3 p.m., Chevy Metal Band at 5 p.m. and Backstage Whiskey at 7 p.m.

For the final day, Heather’s Balloon Magic will return from noon to 4 p.m. and the entertainment lineup consists of Ray Materick Band at noon, Annie Handley and Company at 3 p.m. with the closing ceremony and winners announced at 4 p.m.

There will be the usual treats to eat including the Fisherman’s Breakfast each morning, the Kiwanis Bus featuring burgers and fries, various vendors and the popular Kiwanis salmon barbecue.

Try your luck by making the rounds to enter raffles, including those held by the Rotary Club, Alberni Valley Rescue Club and Kuu-Us Crisis Line Society.

You can always keep track of the largest fish coming in by checking out the display case near the stage. Good luck to all of the derby participants.

The cadets are taking over the kitchen at this year’s Salmon Festival.

About 20 young sea and army cadets will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, pop and chips for the 44th Salmon Festival this weekend, said Capt. John Cloke, commanding officer of the Port Alberni cadets.

“It’s something that we’ve progressing towards for about the last three years,” said Cloke, adding that was about the time he got

At the time, the cadets were in need of personal funding, Cloke said, but instead of simply asking for

money, he wanted to give back to the community.

So Capt. Cloke joined the Kiwanis Club and brought the cadets on board for the Salmon Fest.

The number of cadets volunteering this year is nearly double last year’s commitment, said Cloke, allowing the group to take full control of kitchen duties.

“They enjoy it, they get a sense of accomplishment out of it,” said Cloke.

“They certainly get some skills and they get a sense of being involved in the community.“

Historic anglers 2014 Ray Ursel of Port Alberni landed the winning fish, a 37.7-pound salmon caught near Bamfield. Second place went to Dennis Granneman’s 27-pounder.

2013 Sterling Robinson’s 17.10-pounder landed him the grand prize at the 2013 coho-only Salmon Festival. Second place was won with Rick West’s 15.45-pound coho.

2012 Alice Kempton landed a 34.2-pounder at the 2012 Port Alberni Salmon Festival. The local woman caught the “big one� across from Polly’s Point. She is one of only three women to ever win the derby.

2011 A 35.9-pound salmon landed Port Alberni resident Guy Desbien $10,000. The tyee, which Desbien caught by the Boy Scout Camp on a purple hoochie, was his first fish over 22 pounds.

Festival derby, John Robertson of Parksville caught the biggest fish of his life, which landed him the grand prize of $10,000 at the 2010 festival. Robertson’s fish weighed in at 40.3 pounds.

2009 Cory Jones reeled in the largest fish in 2009. It weighed in at 43.4 pounds. He caught the big chinook while fishing with three friends off Nanat Island. It was his first time winning the derby, even though he has fished in it for more than 20 years.

2007 Bait was best in 2007. The top three derby fish were all landed on Sunday, with Tomi Uusikartano’s 41-pounder hooked at Effingham Island in Barkley Sound. Cassie Judson’s 37-pounder was hooked at Pill Point, at the mouth of Alberni Inlet.

2006 Dave Boxrud of Nanaimo took home some serious cash when he caught the largest fish of the day on Sunday, weighing in at 44.60 pounds.

2004 Husband and wife, Jim and Karen Irvine, netted some nice cash. His 39.10-pound salmon earned $2,000 and her 44.85-pound fish wasn’t the big winner, but reeled in $3,000.

2005 The 2005 festival, a rainy one, was Ed Van Ingen’s year. As one of 2,700 entrants, he planted a kiss on the mug of his $10,000 winning fish once the prizes were awarded.

2002 There were nine big winners; three top fish for each day of the derby with the largest overall winning extra cash for a total of $10,000. Four of the nine were from Alberni.

Official rules for the 1. Each person who completes a registration form is a Salmon Festival entrant and may complete more than one form. Each entrant must fish only within the prescribed boundaries from the beacon in the Somass River mouth to a line drawn from Cape Beale to Amphitrite Point, trolling only when fishing north of Lone Tree Point (or according to Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations).

2. All contending salmon must be weighed in at Clutesi Haven Marina. Other weigh-in stations qualify for hidden weight only.

Weigh-in deadlines are 9 p.m.

Saturday, 9 p.m. Sunday and 3 p.m.

Monday. Fishing shall begin at 6 a.m. each day – no night fishing is allowed. Please remember to allow yourself enough time to get to the

official weigh-in station BEFORE closing time. Salmon must be weighed in on day caught. Each entrant must accompany their salmon to the weigh-in station with derby ticket.

3. Each entrant must use only one rod and reel for each registration form completed. DOWN RIGGERS WITH QUICK RELEASE MAY BE USED. HAND LINES AND WIRE LINE GURDIES MAY NOT BE USED. 4. Persons not registered in the Salmon Festival may accompany entrants, BUT MUST NOT FISH. 5. The top three contending salmon per day become the sole property of the Salmon Festival Society.

6. Only one prize will be awarded for each registration form completed. In the event of a tie, the

7. Stickers must be visible to Patrol Boats.

8. Prize contending salmon in the Salmon Festival are subject to testing and inspection by Federal Fisheries department officials.

9. Official weigh-in personnel will determine weight to the nearest ounce.

10. No eviscerated (gutted) salmon will be eligible for entry. All salmon must be eviscerated or marked by weigh-in officials.

11. To qualify, salmon must be caught and brought to the boat by the entrant, although he or she may receive help in netting or gaffing the catch.

12. Entrants who bring a salmon to the official weigh-in station must provide acceptable evidence of a

legal catch acceptable to Salmon Festival officials.

13. Each entrant agrees to abide by these rules, accept prizes awarded and to accept all decisions and interpretation of these rules by the Salmon Festival pres-ident as final. FAILURE TO OBSERVE ANY RULE WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF ALL ENTRANTS IN THE BOAT. 14. Any fish in a major prizewinning category will be disqualified if found to be foul hooked. Official weigh-in personnel will have final decision.

Prize-winning fish must be weighed in at Clutesi Haven Marina “Official” weigh-in station.

Hidden weigh-in stations are at China Creek Marina, in Bamfield at McKay Bay Lodge and Poett Nook Marina.
