100-foot trees fall on heritage home in Surrey

Now, she’s just trying to mitigate the stress.

“We’ve had blood pressure complications from week 12,” she said of her pregnancy. “I’m actually off work trying to keep my blood pressure down.

“I’m just trying to wrap my head around everything. It’s just so overwhelming.”

Complicating the matter is that the couple had their home on the market for the past year and just sold it. In fact, they sold it Monday, two days after the storm.

“The buyers knew and they still removed subjects. So it’s sold. The emotional ups and down of this has just been crazy.”

The buyers take ownership in January, but Friday – a day before the storm – the McInnes’ signed a tenancy agreement so they could stay and rent the home for two years.

“Our life has been chaotic for the last four years, so we didn’t want to worry about buying another place. The plan is one of us will stay home with the

because of the other trees. We also know the structure of our house, it’s an old house, (and) if one of those pillars came down, it would take out this half of the house.”

Within 10 minutes, bags were packed and everyone packed into the car.

The family is staying at a nearby hotel, and have had some help from family, but it’s been a whirlwind, said McInnes. The search is on for a temporary rental, and she said she’s accepted that she won’t be bringing her new baby back to the family home. But she’s counting her blessings.

“It couldn’t been a lot worse.

The baby is fine, the kids are fine, and we’ll figure it out. The house could’ve come down when we were sitting in the room there,” she said. “I’ve had my moments, and a lot of tears.

I was at the hospital getting the baby monitor and someone asked if I had power at my house. I just started crying and said, ‘I don’t have a house.’”

CLOVERDALE — Think you had a bad weekend in the aftermath of the wild windstorm?

The McInnes family may have you beat.

Thirty-seven weeks pregnant, with three children, two dogs and a husband, Shannon McInnes said her family’s been left homeless after two 100foot trees fell on their heritage Cloverdale home.

“We were sitting in the den, it was just a regular lazy Saturday morning. I have a high risk pregnancy so the nurses come to our house. We were waiting to hear when they were going to come. Girls in their diapers, me in my pyjamas, my husband just having a coffee and colouring with the kids.”

And then disaster struck. The trees landed near the back of the house close to the pillars that hold the building together. Soon after, a third fell and hit the home again.

“You could feel the jolt. It went over the top of the house all the way to the other side.

These were huge trees. They were sitting on the power line and covered our whole porch area,” she said as she gazed around her yard Tuesday morning, now a sea of branches and cut up tree trunks.

“We threw a bunch of stuff in bags. We needed to get out

The storm caused Surrey Food Bank to be without power from Saturday through to roughly 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“It’s been dreadful, just terrible,” said director Marilyn Herrmann.

“We’ve gone five days without any kind of refrigeration,” she told the Now Wednesday. “We lost everything in the coolers. We had $2,000 to $3,000 of eggs and milk we had to dump.”

Herrmann said their coolers will last 24 to 36 hours and still keep food cold enough, but when Monday hit, she was panicking.

“I knew we’d lose everything.”

But she’s delighted to report that Save-On-Foods, operated by Overwaitea Food Group, has stepped to the plate and will be replacing all the lost product.

She’s taking the storm as a lesson going forward.

“We have to, as an organization, find a backup. We can’t rely on hydro, we’re going to have to get a generator or another emergency plan in place.

Herrmann said during the outage, the food bank helped many people who weren’t considered low-income.

“Anyone who came received food,” she said. “One family, they’d just gone and bought groceries Friday for the next two weeks and they lost everything.

She asked me to please help her, and of course we did.

“It really has made me realize what an essential service we are in the community,” she added.

kids while they’re little, so we said let’s just rent. To be able to stay – we were so happy, we didn’t have to move. Then the next day… We’re a family that’s had so much thrown at us – why wouldn’t our house be smushed the day before we’re supposed to sell?” she continued.

“It is what it is. We lean into the chaos. That’s been our life.

This is just another chapter in the book of things you just can’t write. You just can’t make this stuff up.”

Mere hours before the trees fell, McInnes and her husband talked about needing to be better prepared for an emergency.

After the recent earthquakes in Mission and Abbotsford, they were discussing preparing emergency kits for their home.

“We’re not as prepared as we should be. I think that’s what everybody is realizing.”

SURREY — Four Surrey hip-hop dancers have been chosen by the Canadian National Dance Team to represent Canada at the World Hip-Hop Championships in Italy.

Skill-sharers sought for Surrey fair this fall SURREY — Have a skill you want to share? Organizers of an event in Surrey need your help.

The second annual Surrey Skill Share Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Surrey Nature Centre, 14225 Green Timbers Way. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

The fair is a place for people to share their skills with others, according to David Dalley, an organizer of the event.

“We’re looking for people who are passionate and knowledgeable about something they know how to do, and can teach it,” he said.

“It could be any number of things – maybe chicken plucking, HTML (computer coding), darning socks. We’re looking for all kinds of skills.”

The fair could also be a place for people to showcase projects they’re working on, Dalley noted.

Participants need not be an expert to present at the Skill Share Fair. Workshops are small and friendly, organizers say, and presenters are encouraged to be

Workshop presenters will receive a thank-you gift and some food at the event.

The inaugural Surrey Skill Share Fair last year included workshops on a range of subjects, including singing in four-part harmony, beekeeping, caring for chickens in your backyard, bicycle repair, “death doula” work, oil painting, knitting and crocheting, podcasting, shiatsu,

yoga and poetry.

The fair, held in partnership by the Village Surrey Transition Initiative and Surrey Nature Centre, is supported through the Oak Avenue Hub’s Neighbourhood Small Grant Program.

Storm hits bottom line hard for businesses in Surrey

S

urrey this year launched a business emergency preparedness program to help businesses consider the types of risks they face and develop a plan to address them.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, about 25 per cent of businesses forced to close for 24 hours or more by a disaster will never reopen.

Risks to consider are loss of services such as water and gas, building damage, inventory or equipment damage, loss of files and critical data, employee or customer injury and disruption to suppliers/service providers, according to the city’s toolkit.

Businesses are encouraged to consider backing up data and documentation, site safety, emergency plans and recovery plans.

Insurance is a key thing to consider, according to the city, as businesses are not eligible for government disaster financial assistance if insurance was available for that loss.

C Hydro estimates that 710,000 - or 50 per cent - of its customers on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland lost power due to Saturday’s storm.

It’s believed to be the single largest outage event in BC Hydro’s history.

Typically, crews respond to about 2,000 trouble calls a month, but from Saturday to Tuesday they dealt with 1,800.

“A small generator unit could have powered our coolers, that would be something to avoid that loss of goods. A good unit certainly would have paid for itself this weekend,” he said.

But he wasn’t sure if that investment would pay off.

“If we lived in an area where this was more frequent, an investment like a generator would make sense.”

‘ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN DO’

Another hard-hit area was Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre in Cloverdale.

Mall manager Jen Temple couldn’t even put into words how frantic her weekend was.

Between constantly trying to get updates from BC Hydro, keeping in contact with tenants and calling in more security, Temple said she barely slept all weekend.

She was helping Save-On get things back on the shelves and business up and running Monday as power was restored.

“The food store tenants are the hardest hit,” she said.

“But then the small guys like the nail place, Nails R Us, they had clients booked all day Saturday and Sunday, manicures, pedicures, they lost all that business.

“It’s devastating for some of the small ones.”

The mall itself is going to have to pay some big bills as a result of the outage.

“The biggest problem is we have no power, so at shopping centres it’s pitch black. We have no alarm systems. So what do you do?

We’ve had security around the clock. And with no notice, so the bill is going to be through the roof.

“It’s crisis management at this point,” she said Monday.

“How do we mitigate the losses and get everybody open as quickly and effectively as we can. The food sources, that’s tough, they’ve lost product and two days of work. The weekend is the busiest time up in Clayton because everybody works.

“It’s working families, so that’s when they do their shopping, that’s when they go out for dinner, that’s when they get their nails done.”

She said residents certainly learned they need to be more prepared for an emergency, but it’s tougher for businesses to do so.

“A lot of the businesses have emergency plans in place, especially the big stores, but you can’t prepare for this unless you have your own generators, and there’s a huge cost to that.

“There’s only so much you can do.”

NIGHT MARKET CALLS IT A SEASON

The Surrey Night Market was another casualty of the storm.

“Tents were ripped apart, our fence came down, lights, everything, everything was destroyed,” said market director Gary Grewal. “There was massive destruction.”

Staff were at the market site at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds Monday to begin clean up, and Grewal guessed the work would take a few days.

While damage estimates are nowhere near done, Grewal is sure it will be far more than $100,000.

“It will probably be way more than that. There’s nothing left.”

The market was scheduled to run to Sept. 20 this year, Grewal explained.

“It’s a big setback,” he said of the weekend’s devastation, especially considering the market is only in its second year of operation.

While done for 2015, the market isn’t done for good, he stressed. A shorter season is planned for next year from June to mid-August.

Woman left in critical condition after tree falls on her in Surrey SURREY —A woman was in critical condition on Sunday after she was hit by a falling tree on Saturday during the windstorm.

It happened near 148th Street and 100th afternoon shortly after noon.

Police say the woman, in her 40s, was walking with her daughter when she saw tree branches falling. She was apparently trying to warn others

Monday morning BC Hydro reported there were roughly 8,800 homes in Surrey still without power.

While the city’s main operations centre had power on the weekend, just as Costanzo was driving into work Monday morning, he got a call that power was out there.

AUGUST “We still had reserved power so we were able to get the troops out on the road,” he added.

But Costanzo doesn’t think the tree issues are over just yet.

“With this kind of windstorm at this time of year, there’s foliage on the trees and it’s been so dry so there’s dry soil conditions. It’s the perfect recipe for trees to be pushed over by strong winds.”

He said there have been several trees that were compromised Saturday and fell down Sunday or Monday because of winds.

“Hopefully we’ve seen the worst of it.”

The Surrey Fire Department was swamped as well.

Deputy fire chief Karen Fry said the department responded to 299 incidents Saturday, over 126 of which were for wires or hydro poles being down.

On Sunday, another 232 calls came in.

“As power was reenergized throughout the city we saw a lot more hydro pole fires… had wires-down calls, motor vehicle accidents and more alarms ringing.”

MISS: Surrey RCMP say they were inundated with 911 calls from people during the power outage to report that their food was spoiling. Maybe those people need a reminder of what a real emergency is.

Our view

Let’s all be better prepared next time I n the wake of the severe windstorm that hit the Lower Mainland last weekend – and the subsequent power failures that left thousands of BC Hydro customers without electricity – one has to wonder what an honestto-goodness crisis in this region would look like.

Although one can’t minimize the damage the violent gusts wreaked on trees and adjacent powerlines, this was not, after all, a tornado, an earthquake or a tsunami.

It’s sobering that it only takes a strong wind to show us how thin the veneer of civilization is for a society so reliant on electrical devices.

The laugh was on us – and it wasn’t simply a matter of being without lights.

Many realized quickly that all

Computers were down, bigscreen TVs were out. Even such rechargeables as cellphones, iPods,

iPads and laptops were quickly running out of juice – sending people running for places to plug in.

Traffic signals were out, increasing the dangers of travel for those seeking electrical relief.

Garage doors would not open and people were stranded outside of apartment buildings that could not be accessed other than by a key-pad.

Refrigerator and freezers full of food were spoiling within hours after the power went off, and the appeal of using the family barbecue as the only cooking option quickly paled.

Restaurants, if they were fortunate enough to have power, enjoyed an unexpected business bonanza as people went out for meals and lingered in coffee shops.

All these are First World problems, indeed – and would be laughable, if they didn’t point out just how vulnerable, ill-prepared we are for any deviation from our comfortable norms, let alone the kinds of tragic devastation that we have seen visited on other parts of

the world.

When we are suddenly denied the comforts of our technology addicted society, we need to use it as an opportunity to test our self-reliance. We would be foolish indeed if we didn’t let this latest incident serve as a lesson to renew our emergency supplies, and make sure we are equipped with survival basics.

We should make sure we are all equipped with adequate amounts of non-perishable, nutritionally sound food, water, cooking and boiling facilities, first-aid kits and lighting and communication devices capable of working offgrid, to enable us and our families to survive a protracted period – a week, at least – without being a drain on the help of outside agencies.

The Editor, Since the horrendous home intrusion and assault of my neighbour in South Surrey, coupled with my own break-in last November, I have pondered for many hours on just what is behind this chaos we find ourselves living in today.

Some of my neighbours have spoken out time and again for the need for more police. I do not believe that is the answer. The police did not create the chaos we live in and they cannot correct it.

If I were to rely upon police to make me feel truly safe, that would require my own policeman 24/7 outside my door accompanied by his German shepherd. If he is cruising down my street, the bad guys can be executing a break-and-enter on the other side of my immediate neighbourhood, and be gone in five minutes.

The answer lies much deeper.

Our quiet, gentler time has been replaced by a fast-growing society and an economy driven by unbridled greed. Our population in Canada is growing so fast that a new equivalent population of Toronto is born every 10 years.

Are we helping these people of diverse cultures settle in and become part of the Canadian fabric as we used to?

Our social safety nets, which have made Canada truly special and so different from our neighbours to the south, have been slowly dismantled over the past 10 years, with most of us not noticing.

In short, Canada has lost her virtue.

The answer to huge problems that have been growing for many years, is never short and simple, such as hiring an army of police to control the “bad guys.” We have created them with our blind complacency.

I believe we need to wake up, start restoring the fabric of the wonderful Canada we used to be and start caring more for one another.

ICBC may hike basic insurance rate 6.7 per cent

The Insurance Corp. of B.C. is warning motorists they’ll soon pay more for basic auto insurance.

Because of a rate smoothing policy introduced by the province in 2013, this year’s rate hike must be between 3.7 and 6.7 per cent – within 1.5 per cent of last year’s 5.2 per cent increase on basic rates.

ICBC president and CEO Mark Blucher said the initial calculations suggest the maximum 6.7 per cent basic rate hike is required, but pledged to work with the government to find ways to reduce that number by Oct. 30, when the formal rate application is to be filed with the B.C. Utilities Commission.

SURREY — Taran Ghatrora was sitting in a library in the U.K. studying for law school when she heard about a man who quit his job as a lawyer.

Get this, for bacon.

Her interest was piqued. This man had set up a “bacon of the month” company, sending a new type of gourmet bacon to his subscribers every 30 days.

It’s a similar concept to the Men’s Shave Club, which sends men personalized razor orders every month.

“Neat idea,” she thought to herself. Then it hit her: What about tampons?

She called her friend Jessica Bilmer and excitedly shared her idea.

Bilmer jumped on board, as did Ghatrora’s sister Bunny.

And with that, tampons have entered

the world of monthly subscription services, as perhaps the most appropriate monthly care package out there.

The three Surrey women have created ElleBox, offering a personalized monthly subscription so feminine hygiene products arrive at the door every month.

They offer a basic care package with pads, tampons and chocolate, and more luxurious options that can include things like face wash and candles. They even offer organic and chemicalfree options.

Debut event this fall

Tapping into Surrey’s dance diversity Holiday dance parade in Surrey’s downtown is inspired by an event in New York City

CITY CENTRE — From bhangra to ballet, a holiday event in Surrey’s downtown aims to tap into the dance diversity in the city.

While the Downtown Surrey BIA is behind the event, dubbed Spirit of the Season, special projects intern Amanda Rachmat was the one tasked with creating a signature holiday event.

And they didn’t want the typical Santa Claus parade.

As a dancer herself, Rachmat knew just how much talent Surrey is home to and said it seemed natural to harness it for the event.

“I think a lot of people don’t know that there are dance groups based in Surrey – teenagers and kids who grew up in Surrey – that are now internationally known.

I’m hoping this will show them off,” she told the Now. “And I really hope people understand it’s a multicultural event, it’s not just about Christmas. It’s about everything that’s celebrated during the colder months of the year.”

Rachmat said the parade could probably filled with high school students alone, considering the quality and size of dance programs in the district.

“When I was training at Queen Elizabeth (Secondary), each dance class would always have multiple genres we are taught. It would always be at least ballet, contemporary, hip-hop and some sort of cultural dance.

I remember doing African one year and my school had a bhangra team.”

Showing off that diversity is the goal, she continued.

“Surrey’s multiculturalism is outstanding,” said Rachmat, “and it just so happens that with such a large Indian population, so much of their culture is dance and fine arts, so that’s just a bonus.”

The event is open to amateurs and professional alike, whether it’s a high

just a group of kids who like to dance.

“To be a good dancer,

you don’t have to start at five,” she said. “You can start at 17, you can start

in your 20s, and still excel in dance. That’s why I’m hoping there’s amateurs of all ages.”

The event is inspired by the dance parade held every May in New York City, which showcases more than 75 styles of dance. While 75 may be too ambitious for Surrey’s first iteration, Rachat hopes the event can grow into one is just as grand as New York’s.

But it’s not all about dance.

Naturally, the BIA plans to incorporate and showcase area businesses.

They’re creating “Spirit Spots” where visitors and locals can pop by businesses to take in activities like face painting or crafts.

Right now, the three-night event is set for Nov 26, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12. Stay tuned to Downtownsurreybia. com for updates closer to the event.

SURREY — Imagine getting into Harvard and paying less than you would to go to UBC. Welcome to Matthew Li’s reality.

At the end of the school year, the two-year Fraser Heights Integrated Math Science Academy had its first batch of graduates, and Li is just one of 29.

He’s not the only local student at an Ivy League university this month.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Western Canada, the academy is a joint venture with SFU in which students are enrolled in university chemistry courses while still in high school.

The program was created after the Ministry of Education asked schools to think outside the box and come up with ideas on how to be innovative.

“Initially, we thought it wouldn’t really be possible because it would involve curriculum compacting,” said Sheila Morissette, principal at Fraser Heights Secondary.

“Also, because we would want to be working with a university, and because we would want to become and academy and charge a small fee.

But we discovered that the things we thought would be barriers weren’t barriers.”

With the first set of students now finished, Morissette said, “we’ve set the bar pretty high.”

The students didn’t just pass their university classes, they aced them.

“This year, actually, they’ve ended up with a higher class average than SFU students,” Morissette said.

The classes weren’t easy but it was all worth it, said Li. “It was busy and there was a lot of work involved. It was a big jump.”

SURREY — You might recognize Josh Bogert from the TV commercial in which he plays one of two prom-bound teens in the back of a Volkswagen Tiguan, driven by a dad who steers hard left, then right, in order to get the nervous young couple to hold hands in the back seat. In the ad’s punchline, the dad honks the car’s horn when the boy’s hand gets a little too close to his daughter’s tush as they walk up the school stairs to the party.

The commercial, filmed last spring, was Josh’s first acting gig, which he landed after his very first audition.

More recently, he spent the summer in Toronto filming “Backstage,” a new Family Channel show that has him playing a singer-songwriter at a performing-arts school.

It’s a role close to the South Surrey resident’s heart, as Josh

also has a passion for writing and playing music.

“I really enjoy doing both (music and acting), and want to continue doing both,” said Josh, who just turned 15 and goes to school at Elgin Park Secondary.

In June, he won the 2015 Roadhouse Live youth talent contest (formerly known as

Diamond in the Rock) at Blue Frog Studios in White Rock.

One of his music gigs this month is Surrey Youth Fest, on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre. He’ll cap an afternoon of 20-minute performances by 11 solo artists and bands, including Ava Carich, She Dreams in Colour, Ministry of Misfits, Curtis Heimburger, Switch to Black and others.

The festival also features a teen dance from 8 to 11 p.m. and activities such as airbrush tattoos, caricature art, breakdance showcases, skateboard and BMX demos, “sumo” wrestling, a rock climbing wall and more.

A free “hop-on” shuttle bus will motor to the festival site from other rec centres in Surrey.

father of electricity, and Turing is the father of the computer. If nothing else, last weekend’s wind storm and resulting power outages showed us just how reliant we are on electricity and Internet services.

So what did you do when the lights were out?

It sure wasn’t watching a movie, or surfing the ’net.

You probably couldn’t get gas for your car (even

if it didn’t get squashed by a tree), coffee for your breakfast or travel on roads kept in order with traffic lights. Some people also did not have water, as they are on a pump. I had flushing facilities, thank you.

Also, because of the light available during the day, I could spend time reading, and relaxing.

this fall is “The Grove: A Spatial Narrative.”

This multi-channel soundscape and visual narrative explores the community uses of a transient forest that abuts the Newton bus loop and Newton Recreation Centre in Surrey. The Grove has witnessed the extremes of human activity, from illicit transactions and tragedies to community connections over Sunday afternoon lunches and art interventions by a group of Newton neighbours who call themselves “Friends of the Grove.”

You must already know that I am a fan of Friends of the Grove.

This handful of locals reclaimed this public space and keep on adding to the events and happenings in The Grove.

This spatial narrative gives us a glimpse of The Grove. Presented as part of “Open Sound 2015: Polyphonic Cartograph,” a three-part exhibition featuring sound art as forms of mapping and counter-mapping. I have no idea what that actually means, but then I am not technically skilled as some others.

Last note comes via Facebook from the president of Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society: “The tub is in the yard, the toilet’s on the deck, the sink is in the kitchen and we’re showering at the neighbour’s. Must be bathroom reno time!”

And gee, at first I thought he was talking about wind damage. Ah well, at least we will all have tales to tell about the great summer storm of 2015. Gotta feeling that the artists are already creating a new exhibition.

Hosting BC funding for three Surrey tourneys SURREY — Three tournaments in Surrey will benefit from Hosting BC grant money distributed by the provincial government.

Funding in the amount of $5,500 will go to the Cerebral Palsy Sports Association of B.C. to host the Pacific Coast Sledge Hockey Invitational, the Boccia Provincials and Powerchair Soccer Provincials in Surrey next year.

In total, $129,500 will go to various sports organizations in their efforts to

host 39 events in B.C. in 2016. Twentyone communities, including Surrey, will receive funding from Hosting BC, through grants ranging between $500 and $10,000.

The money is provided by the provincial government and administered

by ViaSport, an organization that promotes sport and physical activity.

Since 2004, Hosting BC has invested $5 million in funding for communitybased sporting events.

“These grants provide assistance to smaller sporting organizations that would otherwise not be in a position to host major events on their own,” said Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Applications will reopen again in early September for the next round of Hosting BC funds. For more information, visit Viasport.ca/grants.

Surrey-based athlete Christabel Nettey finished fourth in the women’s long jump final at the IAAF World Championships track meet in Beijing last Friday (Aug. 28).

Her best jump was 6.95 metres, just off her personal best of 6.99 metres, a Canadian record she set earlier this year.

“I was feeling really well and confident,” Nettey, 24, told Athletics Canada. “The fact that I couldn’t respond and move with the girls is really disappointing.

Fourth is really hard. I took a chance on my last jump; felt right away that it was a foul.

“I had a really good first jump (6.95m), hoping to build off of it, but I let some technical stuff get away. My goals were bigger than fourth place.”

In qualifying on Aug. 26, Nettey recorded a best leap of 6.79 metres on her third attempt, going over the auto-qualifying

“A little nerves after the second jump, but I’ve been closing on my last jumps all

season, took the tips from my coach and make the adjustments,” Nettey told Athletics Canada after the qualifying round.

“I’m going to go out there (in the final), keep executing like I have all season and have fun.”

The previous best finish by a Canadian at the World Championships in the women’s long jump was by Ruky Abdulai in 2009.

At the Pan Am Games in Toronto last month, Nettey won gold in the women’s long jump with a distance of 6.90 metres.

Earlier this season, Nettey took gold with a 6.99-metre jump at Stockholm’s XL Galan track and field meet. Not only did she break her own Canadian indoor long jump record, the University of Arizona grad set the bar for the longest jump in the 25-year history of XL Galan’s women’s competition.

This week, Nettey was due to be in Zurich, Switzerland for a Diamond League competition.

Strong, united and dynamic communities full of people who care for one another.

The fact is, nobody has yet devised a workable formula for determining wage increases that would be considered reasonable by the workers, by their employer, by the public, by the press and by the government. One group or another will always be unhappy.

Besides, most employers – except occasionally when in genuine financial distress – still refuse to open their books to union negotiators.

Unions are thus denied access to the data on profits, productivity and labour costs that they must have in order to formulate “reasonable” demands.

The history of Labour Day

A

ccording to many history books, Labour Day began in the United States when the Knights of Labor organized a parade on Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City.

As is often the case, the history books got one thing right and another wrong. The Knights did hold a parade in 1882, but the history of Labour Day began 10 years earlier, and in a place much closer to home.

On April 15, 1872, when Canada was just five years old, the Toronto Trades Assembly organized a “workingman’s demonstration” to call for the freedom of 24 imprisoned leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union.

The demonstration, which was attended by 10,000 people, included a parade and speeches that called for the repeal of a law criminalizing membership in trade unions.

Buoyed by the success of the demonstration, members of seven Ottawa trade unions organized a mile-long parade on Sept. 3, 1872, once again to protest laws that made union membership illegal.

But this wasn’t your average parade; marchers stopped at the home of thenprime minister John A. Macdonald, literally picked up the PM and took him to Ottawa city hall by torchlight.

The prime minister was well aware of workers’ discontent

Peter J. McGuire, the general secretary of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, spoke at the demonstration. He was duly impressed with the event and, when he returned home, he proposed that America celebrate a day in John A. MacDonald honour of workers. What was your worst job ever?

‘Now’ staffer Tom Zillich asked some notable, high-profile people in Surrey about horrible employment experiences from their past. Here are their responses.

Elizabeth Model, CEO of Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association: “My worst job ever was a summer job during my university years, when I was hired to work on a thoroughbred horse ranch in the interior of B.C. As a young woman, I was very excited when I thought I was going to working with horses and learning some new skills! My hopes were completely dashed when my chores and duties consisted of preparing a new paddock with picking thousands of rocks and slashing (with a sickle) burdock, a weed that horses can’t eat. My skills gained for the summer were zero, and I came away muscular arms and a farmer’s tan. I sure was happy to get back to my books and education!”

Staff Sgt. Dale Carr, Surrey RCMP: “I grew up in the Fraser Valley community of Chilliwack. During the late-’70s, I worked for a company named Fraser Valley Coal and Feed. I worked in the coal division. My job was to bag coal into 80-pound bags that would eventually be delivered to homes throughout the Lower Mainland. Some of the homes in Vancouver required us to take the bags into the basement and others had a chute into the basement which we would have to open each bag and dump it into the chute. The job was very physical and dirty work; it was either very cold in the building during winter or very hot in the building and ventilation was poor. We were paid very little. In fact, I was paid by the ton to bag it. I received $2 per ton. The best day my buddy and I did (we worked in pairs) was 32 tons in 15 hours. That was a record day!”

Smelling like rotten yogurt at the end of an eight-hour shift was bad enough but, even worse, the conveyor belt was waist height, so it wasn’t a great look if I had to make any stops on the way home with yogurt all over the front of my pants.”

Wayne Ferguson, owner and operator of Taphouse bar and restaurant in Guildford: “My worst job ever was really not that nice.

It was doing janitorial work at the pub in the Cobalt Hotel in Vancouver. There was a period when my wife and I cleaned the pub at the Cobalt. You could not imagine how awful a job that was. Do I have to elaborate?”

Michael Kim, director of operations, Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino: “I was 17 years old and just starting senior year in high school. Of course, I had to work on Labour Day at the infamous Buns Master bakery near the Production Way SkyTrain station in Burnaby. I still needed to purchase a ton of items for school the next day, including new shoes, books, binders, papers, pens, etc. All I could think my entire shift was, ‘This is the biggest year of my life, tomorrow is the start of senior year, the year where we own our school,’ and I was stuck packing buns and cleaning bins. You’d have to be in my shoes to know the amount of ridicule I got from friends for working at Buns Master. Having said that, that was my first and last Labour Day at Buns Master, and I’ve been happily employed with Great Canadian Casinos Inc., ever since, and the future looks promising!” see › page 31

The strangest (and probably the worst) was to walk around the Easthampstead Rural District (in Berkshire, England) with a bucket of glue, a wire brush and a box of plastic signs. What’s Old is New Again

The new Mustang is entering a market filled with tough competition. Both the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger offer modern interpretations of retro-inspired designs and are already making an impact so this isn’t the easiest time for Mustang to come back.

All-new for 2015, the Mustang is available as a fastback or convertible. Later this year, the Shelby GT350 will be offered.

The 2015 Mustang is the first to be designed for international markets - that fact is evident in some of the styling and engine choices.

Design

Thoroughly modern, this new pony car is unmistakably a Mustang. The familiar profile is more muscular and seductive.

Ford started the design process with a clean sheet. Key Mustang elements are obviously present - like the long, sculpted hood and short rear deck - but, this model has a lower, wider stance and a lower roof. Wider rear fenders are necessary to house the bigger track as well.

The signature blunt nose and trapezoidal grille has been tweaked to reflect Ford’s contemporary styling.

High-intensity discharge headlamps are standard, and have LED accents.

At the rear, there is certainly a more European feel, especially when looking at the lower diffuser. The 3-bar taillights return but are now LED and 3-dimensional thankfully the turn signals are still sequential.

Standard models come with 17-inch wheels. EcoBoost Premium models wear 18’s, while GT’s are equipped with 19’s. Performance versions come with Brembo brakes, among many other features.

And, while it is more eager to corner fast, the updated suspension also soaks up bumps, making long distance drives a joy.

The interior compliments the exterior with a classic appearance. Material quality has been improved and comfort and space has increased due to clever packaging.

Environment

Ford raised the level of refinement inside the cabin to a whole new level. However, while the new Mustang has more interior space than before, it is still a sports coupe and therefore the space is limited.

Performance

Mirroring the styling, the engine bay offers a mix of classic and contemporary design cues.

The Mustang is available with three different engines.

The base model comes with a traditional V6 layout; this unit is a 3.7-litre unit producing an even 300 hp.

If you prefer something different and something more “European”, you can opt for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo inline-4. Using a twin-scroll turbo, this engine produces 310 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque - although you can argue that it doesn’t sound like a Mustang engine in a traditional sense.

The double hump dash brings some nostalgia, and the high tech centre stack design and electronic aids provide a better overall driving experience. The slimmer lower dash creates more knee room, even with the added passenger side knee airbags.

The stock front seats are good, but the optional Recaro seats are highly recommended as they are excellent for spirited driving. The steering wheel is now smaller, but has several controls added to it.

The GT models come with the classic Mustang 5.0-litre V8. Thanks to tuned cylinder heads and valvetrain, it boasts an amazing level of muscle pumping out 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

The rear seats are small and only meant for short drives especially considering the limited headroom on fastback models. Convertible Mustangs remove that issue and use a 1-hand release latch for the power-operated soft top.

A 6-speed manual transmission is standard fitment on all engines. A 6-speed automatic is an option on all models as well.

Cargo space is quite accommodating on the other hand.

The opening is now larger and reveals 13.5 cubic feet in coupes and 11.4 in convertibles.

One feature old Mustangs didn’t have that this new one does is selective drive modes. Switching modes adjusts steering effort, and engine and transmission response.

Also, the stability control can be optimized for snow/ wet, sport and track conditions.

Ford’s SYNC communication and entertainment system, which is still awkward to use, is standard. In base models, music comes out a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input.

Speaking of track conditions, Track Apps are standard and accessible through the information screen between the instrument gauges. Launch Control helps you get off the line and GT models have line-lock for burnouts.

The Ford Mustang is available in eight trim levels with starting prices ranging from $24,068 to $43,591

The new Mustang also handles curves and roads much better than its predecessors. Independent rear suspension is now standard and makes the rear end a lot more stable.

Features

Standard equipment includes a rearview camera, auto headlights and wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, and push-button start.

Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include heated and cooled front leather seats, memory driver seat, remote start, dual-zone climate control, heated exterior mirrors, ambient lighting, illuminated door sills, reversing sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, and a universal garage door opener.

While the Mustang looks traditional, it boasts all the modern technologies found in any other cutting-edge car. The car drives beautifully and with increased comfort.

Thumbs Down

If big horsepower is what you crave, the Mustang simply can’t compete with the outrageous Challenger Hellcat’s 707 hp. The biggest question is…. does this Mustang provide enough distinction to make a dent in this marketplace?
