After union acceptance in principal of a mediator’s proposal, the Qualicum Beach labour dispute took a big step back this week.

“We have an agreement, but it has to go back to the union,” said town Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Sailland after council met in private to consider a proposal the union voted to accept Friday.

“Qualicum Beach town council has given conditional agreement to the recommendations of the Labour Relations Board (LRB) mediator,” said Sailland in a news release Tuesday afternoon after a return to talks last week. “Only one condition remains: that the union confirms that it will agree (to) the removal of the IT coordinator position from the bargaining unit.”

“We didn’t agree to that, I don’t know why they put that out,” said CUPE Local 401 President Blaine Gurrie, clearly frustrated. “You can’t add something that’s never been mentioned once in the entire time we’ve been bargaining.”

Bryce Casavant, the conservation officer who was suspended after refusing to kill two black bear cubs near Port Hardy, is being transferred out of the Conservation Officer Service.

In July, Casavant made national headlines for saving two cubs, Jordan and Athena, who are now living in Errington under the care of the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC) team. Casavant shot their mother after she repeatedly broke into a meat freezer in a mobile home in the North Island but refused to euthanize the cubs.

The B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) issued a news release Friday confirming they are in the process of filing a grievance over the transfer, after already filing a grievance over Casavant’s suspension earlier this summer.

Arrest in connection to string of thefts

A 25-year-old Parksville man, a suspect in a string of recent thefts from vehicles, was remanded in Nanaimo Provincial Court Monday and will make his next court appearance on Sept. 8.

The man was arrested Saturday afternoon outside Rathtrevor Provincial Park in connection to a rash of theft from vehicles in the past few weeks, including the theft of a passport and a substantial amount of foreign currency including 800 British pounds and 400 Israeli shekels.

According to a news release issued by Oceanside RCMP, shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday the suspect was arrested without incident. Police say a search revealed the man was allegedly in possession of several stolen items linked to recent thefts from vehicles in Rathtrevor Park.

Police said the passport and driver’s licence belonging to tourists were recovered and returned, along with some foreign cash.

“We are very pleased this suspect was apprehended and now will be held to account for his actions,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman in a release. “His (alleged) crime spree ruined the vacation of many who travelled to our community.” Police say they believe the suspect is responsible for the string of recent thefts and Oceanside RCMP recommended 12 charges against the suspect ranging from several counts of possession of stolen property, theft under $5,000 and possession of break in instruments. The suspect made his first court appearance Monday, where he was remanded.

Mounties will be checking for seat belts and car seats this Labour Day weekend as part of a province-wide safety campaign, according to a news release issued by Oceanside RCMP. “Proper car seat use has significantly decreased (the fatality) rate over the last two decades, but we can do better,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Michelle LeBrun.

Karl and Diana Yzerman (nee Miller) met in the logging camp of Port McNeill and married 60 years ago this month.

They were married Sept. 5, 1955, in a tiny church in the village of Alert Bay, reported their daughter Cathleen Hansen who was born there, and they spent years in remote logging camps.

During their time in isolated Mahatta River on the north Island, former prime minister, (Leader of the Opposition at the time) John Diefenbaker visited, ostensibly on a fishing trip.

In reality, he was hiding out from the Gerda Munsinger scandal erupting in Ottawa, Hansen said.

“As camp manager, Karl busied himself keeping Diefenbaker and members of his staff entertained,” she said. They did go fishing, and Diefenbaker enjoyed himself enough to send a warm letter of appreciation when he returned to Ottawa.

Camp life was simple but not always easy, said Hansen. Groceries had to be ordered, via mail, from Woodwards in Vancouver and

shipped by barge. Residents walked to a tiny one-room post office to pick up their mail, and could purchase a few basic items at the camp commissary.

There was plenty of wildlife, including many black bears, sometimes sauntering to within metres of playing children, Hansen remembered.

In their years in remote north-Island camps the family dealt with numerous situations like a homicide among camp workers, accidental deaths, lost people and marital disputes.

The family moved to Duncan in 1973, then in 1987, Karl took early retirement and the couple moved to the Lower Mainland for about 14 years until they moved back to Parksville to be closer to family.

The couple recently purchased a tandem bicycle to continue their pursuit of fun, fitness and adventure, Hansen said, proud of her active parents in their 80s.

On Saturday, the couple celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, inviting friends and family to join them at an open house at 344 Davis Avenue, in Parksville, from 1-4 p.m.

CAMERA DRONE BUZZES YOGA CLUB IN PARKSVILLE COMMUNITY PARK

They have buzzed the skies over forest fires, hampering the efforts of aircraft and drawing the ire of Premier Christy Clark.

They have crept too close to a pod of orcas in the waters near Vancouver Island, earning a hefty fine for the owner from Washington State authorities.

Another episode of annoyance — or perhaps larger safety and privacy issues — came closer to home recently when an unmanned aircraft equipped with a camera, a drone, disrupted a Yoga on the Beach class with more than 40 participants in Parksville on Aug. 12.

The teachers of this yoga class, Dr. Barbara Low and Charlotte Crowley, have asked the City of Parksville for “enforceable safety bylaws” to prohibit the use of drones in public parks.

“Having a cam-drone buzzing over our class of 40 people was not an ideal experience in August while they attempted to relax after an hour of yoga workout,” the women wrote, adding that the incident “put a large group of adults’ well-being and comfort at potential risk.”

The women said when they asked the youth operating the drone to stop buzzing the group, This is not acceptable from he said he thought a safety perspective, nor is he had permission to play with the deit sensible or legal vice in the park.

The city, through its Director of Administrative Services Debbie Comis, provided this answer to the yoga teachers in a letter obtained by The NEWS: “The regulation of what is referred to as unmanned aircraft, including model planes and drones is under the control of Transport Canada,”

wrote Comis. “The city does not regulate this type of activity. Your concerns would be better directed to Transport Canada.”

However, municipalities in B.C. have taken steps to curb the use of these devices in public places.

For example, the City of Richmond banned drones and other remotecontrolled aircraft from parks and school grounds in a bylaw it passed in April.

“Richmond is near YVR and has had all sorts of problems with potential interference with the flight patterns of aircraft,” said Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre. “This is the first type of this complaint we have received. No doubt as the popularity of these devices grows it could become an issue, such as the invasion of privacy. At the present time we need more information on the regulation of these devices before we pass any more bylaws.”

Lefebvre said one of the first questions that comes to mind for him is how any new bylaw could be enforced. The mayor also said he is interested in the use of drones in Parksville “for safety and security for the fire department, police department and search and rescue personnel, not to mention staff who monitor the Englishman River banks and the Arrowsmith Dam.” Lefebvre also said he will be pursuing this matter further because “it could become a problem if not properly regulated with a reasonable means to do so.”

Whomever buzzed the yoga group, it wasn’t likely a member of the PDQ Flyers, the local unmanned aircraft club that has 70 members, three of which own drones, said the Flyers’ publicity director Bruce Berry. The Flyers have their own field in Nanoose Bay and stringent national regulations about where and when they operate their craft.

“If anyone is flying drones in that area (Parksville Community Park), they most certainly don’t belong to our club,” said Berry.

On its website, Transport Canada provides a list of do’s and don’ts in regards to operating unmanned aircraft. You don’t need permission to

fly your unmanned aircraft recreationally if it weighs less than 35 kg (77 pounds), but Transport Canada asks that people read and follow it’s safety guidelines.

The ‘do’ list includes: “Respect the privacy of others – avoid flying over private property or taking photos or videos without permission.”

The ‘don’t fly’ list includes: • Closer than nine km from any airport, heliport, or aerodrome.

• Higher than 90 metres above the ground.

• Closer than 150 metres from people, animals, buildings, structures, or vehicles.

• In populated areas or near large groups of people, including sporting events, concerts, festivals, and firework shows.

• Near moving vehicles, avoid

highways, bridges, busy streets or anywhere you could endanger or distract drivers.

• Within restricted airspace, including near or over military bases, prisons and forest fires.

• Anywhere you may interfere with first responders.

Transport Canada also says it intends to introduce regulatory requirements for unmanned air vehicles that weigh 25 kg or less in 2016.

“The goal of these new proposed regulations is to support the enjoyment and development of this budding sector while keeping people on the ground and in the sky safe,” Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt said on May 28 of this year.

“I look forward to hearing from our stakeholders as I consult them in the coming months.”

Seniors talking, learning Free SOS seniors program expanding to Qualicum Beach Lissa aLexander Special to The NEWS

It started off with one SOS coordinator and a few local seniors, and today the Seniors Are Talking program has grown to more than 100 members and it’s expanding to Qualicum Beach in September.

Beverley Cattley was the first member of the SOS (Society of Organized Services) program back in 2006. She said she has enjoyed many things about the program over the years including the Wednesday meetings and the information sessions, but she particularly likes the bus trips and annual Christmas dinners. “That means a lot to many of us that don’t have families anymore,” she said.

Patricia Rodgers also joined the program in 2006, at a time when the friendship, camaraderie and support was very welcomed.

“I joined Seniors Are Talking just after my husband died and I don’t know what I would have done without it,” she said. “It really filled a gap.”

Rodgers said the information sessions have proved invaluable. These have included Service Canada seminars, and talks about nutrition and exercise.

“I have learned so many things that I would never have known about,” she said, “I share it with friends who aren’t members.”

Phyllis Maughan joined the group a couple of months ago and said she’s so pleased that her friend told her about the program. She at-

tends every Wednesday, whether it’s a meeting at SOS with a speaker, or an outing.

The SOS bus has picked her up and taken her to a show at the Chemainus Theatre, the movie theatre in Nanaimo and to High Tea at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. She said she also enjoys the monthly tea service at St. Stephen’s Church.

“It gets me out of the house,” she said, “I’m here on my own, so it’s something for me to look forward to every Wednesday.”

Cattley agreed that getting out to see familiar faces is important for seniors.

“Just seeing familiar faces, you may not even know them, but you keep seeing them on Wednesdays and that means a lot.”

Seniors Are Talking coordinator Shelley St. Marie will be hosting one Wednesday meeting a month from Qualicum Commons in Qualicum Beach, to make it more accessible for people who live there and north of town.

“It will be nice for seniors who find Parksville is too far from home, to join us in Qualicum Beach once a month,” said St. Marie.

An open house will be held at the Commons — the former elementary school, 744 Primrose St. — Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

Sailland told The NEWS this request was brought up in response to the union asking “under what conditions council would give the requested two per cent annual increases.”

He said council wanted the IT (information technology) position taken out of the bargaining unit, making it an exempt position, because “there may be challenges under section 12 in terms of them representing employees,” meaning they see it as a management position. At $79,261 on a recent list of town employees, it is also the highest paid non-management position.

“We said we’ll talk to you about this when it’s done, we’re not opposed to it,” said CUPE’s Currie, adding there would be a lot of little details to work out in a separate application process through the LRB. Gurrie said they are “filing a bad faith bargaining complaint” over the town adding the new demand after the union members had voted on it. “The mediator’s recommendations included minor contract language changes and modest two per cent per-year wage increases, We Have Happy advertisers!

He sent a copy of a letter from LRB mediator David Schaub, which Gurrie said was sent to council unsolicited. “For clarification, your correspondence states that there was agreement on August 26, 2015 to remove the IT coordinator position from the bargaining unit. This is incorrect…” He said he reviewed his notes and while it was discussed, “the union would not agree to the removal…”

He suggests that “council should seek advice from legal counsel with respect to the actions undertaken through the resolution.”

The town news release presents it as nearly a done deal, with Mayor Teunis Westbroek saying they’d solved “a real impasse,” and that council “laid out conditions that would help us move to accept the union’s request for two per cent per year.”

Casavant ‘did the right thing’

“Bryce Casavant was following clear procedures when he decided to save these young bears,” said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith in the release.

“We will pursue these issues to an arbitration hearing and ask an independent decision maker to find there was no just cause for the employer’s actions.”

Smith said Casavant shouldn’t have been suspended in the first place — and he shouldn’t be transferred from his position as a CO. “He has a distinguished record of public service in law enforcement,” said Smith. “Bryce Casavant did the right thing when he decided these young bears should be assessed for rehabilitation.”

B.C. Public Service Agency team supervisor Ronda Watson declined to comment on Casavant’s transfer or provide additional information on where he was transferred to and why.

“Due to the confidentiality of all our employees The B.C. Public Service Agency will not be releasing any information,” Watson said in an e-mail to The NEWS on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, NIWRC co-owner Sylvia Campbell said the bears are adjusting “just great” to life at the recovery centre.

“The bears are great, they’re growing and they are a lot bigger than when they first came in,” Campbell told The NEWS. “They’re adjusting to life well, they’ve mingled with other bears very

Jordan and Athena are now seven months old and may be some of the most famous bears in B.C. Their story went viral in July attracting a myriad of attention on social media, including a tweet from self-proclaimed “animal avenger” British comedian Ricky Gervais who posted “Bryce Casavant, conservation officer, suspended for refusing to kill bear cubs… Reinstate this honourable man.”

dvances in technology can put lawmakers in serious catch-up mode. Common sense, or a lack thereof, has been around for millennia.

Our Spotlight today on page A5 tells the story of a local yoga club that was shaken by the presence of a camera drone when members were doing their thing recently in Parksville’s Community Park. They want the city to develop bylaws again this alleged breach of safety and privacy protocols.

The city isn’t sure what to do about this. Mayor Marc Lefebvre acknowledges the potential dangers, but he also sees a use for drones to enhance the safety and security of city infrastructure and employees.

It’s easy for cities to point uphill at senior governments.

The governance of the skies and aircraft is the mandate of the federal government’s Transport Canada.

Some cities, like Richmond, have developed bylaws regarding drones. We are willing to bet Richmond has more than one bylaw officer — what Parksville has — to enforce such regulations.

Transport Canada will presumably provide small municipalities who can’t develop meaningful legislation on this issue with some teeth when it comes out with new regulations on unmanned aircraft next year.

Another advance in technology — the proliferation of cell phones and their texting/surfing applications — has proven deadly in B.C., where one quarter of traffic fatalities can be attributed to distracted driving.

Ten years ago, distracted driving meant eating or turning around to help a child in the back seat.

Legislation is in place, and enforcement campaigns frequent, in regards to distracted driving in B.C. Thing is, before drones, before cell phones, before electricity for crying out loud, there was that thing called common sense. And don’t even get us going about personal responsibility. If a drone operator employed some common sense, he/she would know it’s not OK to buzz a group of people doing yoga or peep/creep through an apartment window or get in the way of aircraft fighting a forest fire or get too close to a pod of orcas. Everyone who has a cell phone and an ounce of common sense knows it’s dangerous to text while driving.

Such is the state of our world that laws must be put in place because many (most?) humans have lost any tenuous grip they once had on common sense.

It seems the speed of technological advances in our society is only matched by the backwards slide in our ability to employ common sense.

Step up Canada

There is an important warning in this recently called and lengthy election process.

Millions of Canadians are disillusioned about politics. Fewer than half bother to vote, less in municipal elections. People will say they feel betrayed, sold out by a political class of professional electioneers, big donors, lobbyists and even the media.

What happens when so many people drop out of a system they no longer respect and which they think no longer represents them? Democracy loses its legitimacy.

As Canadians we are respected wherever we travel in the world, yet on the international scene we are losing our national voice, we opt out of major decision making and many of us choose to belong to no particular political party because the ideologies of those parties were formed in the mid 1800s and do not apply to today.

So please, pay attention Canadians. Step up to the plate. Ask questions and listen closely and let’s vote for moral and ethical human beings who will attempt to give us the politicians we deserve.

Why? Because politics and democracy are deserving of honour and we are deserving as human beings.

Recent letter writer Robert Rock seems convinced that biblical accounts of Jesus’ life were based on ancient myths and pagan rituals. Such claims are hotly contested and hardly conclusive. For Rock’s sake, let me be as plain as I can be. Attempts to link Bible passages to ancient mythical characters such as Horus (Egypt), Mithras (Roman) or Enki (Sumerian) are so dismal that they are laughable.

Pagan attempts to counter the growing influence of Christianity by imitating it are clearly apparent in measures instituted by Julian the Apostate, Roman emperor from A.D. 361 to 363.

Further claims that Judaic and Christian beliefs came about as a plagiarism of other belief systems sprang up again in 19th century Germany, as part of the German “Religionsgechichtliche schule” or the History of Religions school of thought. As a result

of real research and scholarly review, these claims were dismissed.

Add to that the popular YouTube video “zeitgeist” and Dan Brown’s DaVinci’s Code, and you have a meal made for rabid anti-Christian conspiracy theorists.

The Bible, if nothing else, is the history of human nature — at times selfish, violent and horrifying, like many other historical accounts. The difference lies in its attempt to break this cycle with lessons that focus on an unselfish path, reflected in a transcendent being whose goal for humanity is unconditional love. Getting to this point is an evolution to say the least, or more accurately, a maturation. This is why context is everything. We cannot compare Leviticus to Luke or Judges to James as proof of contradictions.

Whether or not you believe Jesus was more than just a flesh and blood man depends on whether or not you believe his message and his example made him extraordinary, heavenly even.

Prophets were sent; prophets were rejected. So a Son was sent, and although his body was killed, his message lives on and became the cornerstone of our civilization.

To this day the Bible continues to both inspire and infuriate, and we are better for it.

Virgin Birth In his letter Robert T. Rock (The NEWS, Aug. 27) infers that Biblical details are full of contradictions.

For example, he wrote: “It was later Christian writers who substituted virgin for the original word ‘almah’ which means only a young woman.” However, if he had done more thorough research, he would have found that it could only denote a virgin.

The author Tom Harpur, in his book The Pagan Christ, also made a claim questioning the virgin birth of Jesus. Harpur claims that the virgin birth story was adapted from an ancient Egyptian god. His book relies heavily on the work by Alvin Boyd Kuhn whose work on the subject has been fully discredited by prominent Egytologists.

Harpur does not understand that the Hebrew word ‘almah’ means virgin, young woman of marriageable age or a maid or

newly married. Note that there is no instance where it can be proved that this word designates a young woman who is not a virgin. The word ‘almah’ is rare, usually translated as ‘maiden’ and it appears only 10 times in the Hebrew Scriptures.

In the few verses where ‘almah’ appears, the word clearly denotes a young woman who is not married but is of marriageable age. Although ‘almah’ does not implicitly denote virginity, it is never used in the Scriptures to describe a young, presently married woman.

It is important to remember that in the Bible, a young Jewish woman of marriageable age was presumed to be chaste.

rodeo SuCCeSS I am writing in regards to the letter ‘Great to see the rodeo return’ (The NEWS, Aug. 27).

I would like to let you know that this event was not put on by Coombs Hillers Recreation Community Organization (CHRCO), but by Vancouver Island Western Heritage Organization (VIWHO). We are a new organization that is comprised very few people. We worked endless hours in a short period of time to put this show on, with help from volunteers and sponsors. Thank you to everyone that stepped up and made this a great event.

We are glad that everyone had a good time and would like to apologize for the lack of food vendors on site. We had a couple vendors not show up and the ones that were there were overwhelmed. This is something that will be fixed for next year.

We relied on social media and the posters that were posted from Campbell River to Duncan for advertisement. With a limited budget and a small committee, we got the word out to bring enough people through the gate to pay the bills. Next year is going to be bigger and better.

My oldest son came out in August from Alberta with his younger brothers and attended the Gold in the Net goalie camp in Parksville.

On Sunday before day one of the camp, we went to Kidfest and my three sons had a great day. The volunteers at Kidfest, the instructors and arena staff at the camp are true ambassadors for the community.

I refer to Bob Pellow’s recent letter to The NEWS about the importance of strategic voting in the new riding of Courtenay-Alberni, which includes Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

Pellow writes that if voters are hoping to defeat the Conservatives, the three opposition parties should “draw a straw” to see who should be supported.

Pellow is correct that voting for a party which is unlikely to be the first past the post on October 19 could allow the Conservatives

to win the riding. He is not correct that the Conservatives won the last election by a large majority.

In fact, in the last federal election of 2011, the polls that have been re-distributed to our new local riding were very close, according to Elections Canada. The Conservatives received 44.8 per cent of the vote and the NDP received 40.7 per cent. The Liberals and Greens each received less than seven per cent.

It looks to me like the NDP has already drawn the long straw as the most likely party to defeat the Conservatives in what could be a very close race between these two parties in our local riding.

Notwithstanding this, of course, is the fact that every vote should be earned.

It seems to me that if a small dam was put in place at Cameron Lake it could be used to store water during the wet season to be used when there is less in the dry summer months.

The water would travel to Parksville by gravity without the use of pumps. The water main could follow the E&N right of way making good use of it.

TOWN OF QUALICUM BEACH UPDATE ON CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS Qualicum Beach Town Council has given conditional agreement to the recommendations of the Labour Relations Board mediator. Only one condition remains: that the Union confirms that it will agree the removal of the IT Coordinator position from the Bargaining Unit.

This request is consistent with mediated discussions that took place on August 26, 2015 and must be resolved prior to ratification.

I hate to bring up the subject, but it will soon be time for a new school term, and opportunities for quality time with family and friends will require a little more planning. For this reason, it’s good to have some options that offer a great quality experience for a small investment of time. Newcastle Island is definitely an outing to consider in this respect. A single afternoon, or even a quick getaway on a summer evening, can include a boat ride, a walk or bike ride through beautiful forest trails, spectacular coastal views, some fascinating examples of cultural and industrial history and, if your timing is right, even the reward of snacks and ice cream before your ferry ride home.

Unless you’re using your own watercraft to make the short journey across Nanaimo harbour, your trip will start from the quay at Maffeo Sutton Park. Protection Island Ferries advertises a regular service into September, but trips are possible into October by hitching a ride on the Dinghy Dock Pub Ferry to Protection Island.

It’s best to contact the operators and confirm schedule or booking opportunities in advance if you’re planning an out of season trip.

Bikes are an ideal way to explore much of the island, and the ferry has a bike rack to make this easier, although you’ll have to pay extra to take them across.

Around half of Newcastle Island’s trail network is closed to bikes, but the remainder is well surfaced dirt and gravel, mostly of easy grades, and through beautiful terrain. Bikes allow much easier access to the start of the hiking trails on the north side of the island, so adding a bike lock will allow an ideal mix of cycling and walking on this motor traffic free destination.

As this was a first trip visit for me, I filled my time exploring all of the trails and points of interest accessible by bike. It proved to be an ideal outing that filled an afternoon perfectly for the group of 10 to 12 year olds I took over. Following the advice of the ferry skipper, we headed off through the campground and onto the trails in an anti clockwise direction. This immediately gave some amazing opportunities to stop and explore the rocky coastline. The views here are pretty well worth the price of the ferry ride, even without exploring any further. Continuing on, however, soon took us inland, through perfect second growth forest interspersed with garry oak and arbutus. Maps are positioned at pretty much every one of the trail junctions, and orientation was fairly straightforward.

A full loop of the outer bike trail returned us to the campsite with plenty of energy left, so we headed back into the trees on the trail that cuts through the middle of the island to check out the mine air shaft marked on the maps. Money will go to the Salmon River area south of Sayward The Parksville Qualicum Fish and Game Association recently donated $1,000 to the Nature Trust Land Acquisition project for the Salmon River area south of Sayward on the north Island.

“The Nature Trust is working to acquire an exceptional 165 acres of private land along the lower Salmon River and estuary,” said PQFG board member Beth Hurst by e-mail.

“This strategic opportunity will enhance critical habitat for numerous species of fish and wildlife including great blue heron, marbled murrelet, northern pygmy owl, Roosevelt

Elk and all species of Pacific salmon: coho, chinook, chum, pink and sockeye.

“The area is also home to sea run cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden char and it boasts the largest steelhead in B.C.” “The Nature Trust has firm funding commitments from the B.C. Hydro Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and several generous donors,” Hurst said.

World class music coming to Parksville Four concerts by prominent Canadian artists will celebrate artistic excellence

Oceanside Classical Concerts is looking forward with great anticipation to the start of a second season of bringing a classical music concert series to the Parksville Qualicum Beach area.

According to a news release issued by the McMillan Arts Centre, the exciting 2015-2016 season features four concerts by prominent Canadian artists of international stature namely, the Borealis String Quartet, pianist Jane Coop O.C., the Couloir Duo and, The Elmer Iseler Singers.

This concert season continues with more live performances, celebrating artistic excellence.

Artistic director David Douglas has based this series on the very successful concert model developed by distinguished Canadian musician and Impresario George Zukerman, who is the artistic advisor to Oceanside Classical Concerts.

“Classical music has the extraordinary power to communicate, inspire, uplift and entertain,” said Douglas in the release.

The concerts are “subscription only”, though the cards can be transferable.

All four concerts are included in the $95 subscription fee ($23.75 per concert).

The first concert of the season will be on September 26 featuring the Borealis String Quartet. The second concert on October 28 will feature pianist Jane Coop. The third concert is the cello and harp duo, Couloir, on February 9, 2016 and the final concert is the Elmer Iseler Singers on April 23, 2016.

This concert series will be held at Knox United Church in Parksville.

Many of the artists featured last season and those performing in the upcoming season have performed on some of the world’s greatest concert stages.

Forest Fantasies infiltrate Milner Project specifically tied to plant material CARLI BERRY

A forest fantasy will be showcased by the Mid Island Floral Arts Club at Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach.

Come join the woodland critters as the arts club shows seven pieces designed from plant material.

Margaret Leeuw, of the floral arts club, is creating three of the pieces for the Forest Fantasies project.

One of them is a collection of small balls made of sticks strung through the trees at varying lengths. These balls are headed towards “The Mothership,” a large ball made of sticks that is approximately three feet wide that, as the balls pass through the ship, allows them to become brightly coloured and perfectly circular. At least that is how Leeuw described it.

Leeuw said she likes to use rainbow colours in her work. Her last piece “Over the Rainbow” was showcased at the last Art in the Gardens. “Over the Rainbow” utilized the garden’s reflecting pool, which made the colours pop.

Another piece she is currently working on is the “You Are My Sunshine” which uses plant materials to make flowers, making flowers from flowers, she said.

She said she started working on the projects in February.

She said this collection is specifically tied to plant materials, the creations must be “predominately plant materials,” but can contain other items, like certain scarecrows will have clothing which is not made from plants.

“It’s natural in the garden,” she said.

The project started in 2011 when the group created forest faces along the Milner trails.

Forest Fantasies will be available for viewing from Sept. 10 to Oct. 11 from 10 photo submitted by milner Gardens a.m. to 5 p.m. Tea is available from noon to 4 p.m. Entry is free for members, VIU Milner Gardens will be showcasing the Mid Island Floral Arts Club’ Forest Fantasies starting on Sept. 10. VERNA LOUISE PEARSON (Edwards)

Our artistic and independent Verna Louise Pearson (Edwards) set sail on her last journey Thursday, August 27, one day shy of her 86th birthday.

She spent her last week at home, compassionately cared for by her loving son Stuart and his partner Brian, aided greatly by health professionals from Vancouver Island Health and We Care Health Services.

Verna was born in London, Ontario and spent many years in Southern Ontario raising her family, before venturing on an extended voyage through the Caribbean on her Nauticat 33.

She returned to Ontario in the early 1990s, packed up, and drove solo across the country to settle in her beloved home in Nanoose Bay, where she took an in-charge approach to home maintenance and landscaping. Her two plus decades on Vancouver Island were marked by a dedication to community service, from a lengthy stint volunteering for the Nanoose Public Library and many years at the SOS, where she also greatly enjoyed shopping for bargains, and Citizens on Patrol/Community Policing.

An avid amateur archivist, she set the same meticulous standards regardless of the task at hand: whether documenting the price of a loaf of bread in 1967 or for tracing and recording the family history. Her perseverance and make-themost-of-life attitude were an inspiration to many.

She was predeceased by a dear son (Scott) and is survived by former husband Milt (Marianne), three sisters, Myrtle, Sylvia (Wilf), and Shirley, and many nieces and nephews. Service and cremation will be private. In honour of her love of a bargain, Stuart and Brian are scouring the SOS for an appropriate urn.

Parksville Taekwondo’s Seth Fleming-Alho has returned from the Pacific Northwest Historical European Martial Arts tournament on Whidbey Island in Washington State with a bronze medal for his efforts.

Fleming-Alho, a 16-year-

old with a third dan black belt, earned his bronze medal in the long sword competition at the tournament, which took place at the end of August.

With 50 competitors coming from across North America and as far away as Scotland, Fleming-Alho competed in three events, the long sword, single

stick and cutting, attending the event with his club, Blood and Iron Martial Arts.

“I was hoping to compete in grappling too,” Fleming-Alho said.

“I had to withdraw from that event though because I broke my toe in training.”

The single stick event is a

form of one-handed sword fighting using a rattan stick.

In the cutting event, competitors try to cut rolled tatami mats, being scored on precision and speed.

In the long sword competition, fully armoured fighters earn points when they strike their opponent.

Fleming-Alho reached the second round of the cutting event, the semi-finals of the single stick event and won bronze in the long sword event, becoming the youngest person to receive a medal at the tournament.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Parkinson Super Walk, set to take place in more than 20 communities across B.C. On Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Parksville Community Park, participants will utilize their superpowers to generate awareness of the disease and raise funds for education, resources and support services. Proceeds will also be invested in vital research, including into exercise for symptom management.
