Community rallies to help mourning family Family and friends are raising funds to cover a teen’s funeral costs.

On top of mourning the death of her 19-year-old son, a Pitt Meadows mom is also having to deal with funeral fees.

At around 7 a.m. on Aug. 12, Lorynda Parker found her first-born son, Nick, lying on his bedroom floor.

She tried to perform CPR on Nick but to no avail.

Nick’s body was cold and Lorynda believes her son passed away at roughly 4 a.m.

Nick had suffered from a lifetime of seizures and while the cause of his death isn’t yet known, it is believed he had an aneurysm.

Wiebe & Jeske Funeral Services in Abbotsford absorbed the costs of Nick’s burial and service on Aug. 20, and the family must pay back the fee.

“If it wasn’t for Wiebe & Jeske we wouldn’t have been able to bury him,” said Lorynda, an apartment manager in Pitt Meadows. “The City [of Abbotsford] demands payment before they dig the hole. If I wasn’t there on the Wednesday with just shy of $5,000 then they weren’t burying him.”

A gofundme page has been set up to help the family pay for the funeral costs. The page can be found at http://www.gofundme.com/ sgssx69s.

As of Wednesday, $3,640 towards the $10,000 goal had been raised in 20 days since the page went up.

As well, a fundraiser is being planned for Oct. 17 at the Jolly

Coachman Pub and details are still being ironed out.

As the fundraising efforts continue, Lorynda is left to mourn her son who she described as a “good kid” who was close to passing a culinary course.

“He never got into any trouble,” she said, her voice shaking with emotion. “He stayed home. He didn’t go out and get into any trouble.”

Lorynda said Nick loved to play his PS3 and still had his headphones on when he died.

“I gave him 200 bucks once to go shopping for clothes and he came back with this three-piece suit, so then I gave him $100 to go get shoes and he came back with a top hat,” she reminisced. “He was eccentric.

He was all his own.”

Moving forward, Lorynda is trying to stay strong for her other son Nathaniel, 17.

“I just have to remember that I have to get out of bed for Nathaniel,” she said.

Harris Road crash claims life of Abbotsford man

A pickup truck went into a ditch early in the morning Tuesday, claiming one life.

A 35-year-old Abbotsford man died in a single-vehicle crash in north Pitt Meadows early Tuesday morning.

Just after 7 a.m., a pickup truck was turning right from McNeil Road onto Harris Road, when it went into the

water-filled ditch, said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop Ridge Meadows RCMP. While firefighters and paramedics joined police on the scene, Dunlop explained that the truck had to be towed out from the water before the deceased could be removed.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said the corporal.

“The coroner attended… and now has conduct of the investigation. The name of the man is being withheld at this time.”

Harris Road north of Old Dewdney Trunk Road was closed for several hours after the accident.

Crash injures

Several Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows musicians have been named as semifinalists for the B.C. Country Music Association’s annual industry awards, including Madeline Merlo, One More Girl, and Chris Rolin.

A overnight, single-vehicle crash left a 29-year old Maple Ridge man in serious condition. The crash took place around 1 a.m. Wednesday, in the 23300 block of Dagwood Avenue, after the man’s car ended up upside down in a water-filled ditch.

A couple months ago, Mirko Gelsc had seen enough.

The 72-year-old Croatian man had moved to rural 224th Street, north of Abernethy Way, in 2006.

At that time, Gelsc’s property didn’t look very different from his neighbours, he said.

But while Gelsc spent the last nine years tending to his property, clearing trees and repairing his barn, he watched as his often-absent neighbour allowed more and more people to set up camp behind his empty house.

theft, and revolving door of street-entrenched people coming and going from the property pushed Gelsc to put his house up for sale.

When Ridge Meadows RCMP – flanked by City bylaw enforcement officers, firefighters and other City support staff – arrived at his neighbours’ house Tuesday, ready to break up the long-standing squatters’ camp, Gelsc was relieved.

“People come to look at my property,

and they are interested until they see what’s going on next door,” he explained.

“As we became aware about the situation, we gave the homeowners notice,” said Liz Holitzki, director of licences, permits and bylaws with the City of Maple Ridge.

The situation had spiralled out of control because the owners lived in Vancouver, and were holding the property as an investment, explained Holitzki.

“As soon as they saw the situation, they were absolutely appalled,” Holitzki added.

As to where the squatters would end up, Holitzki said the City aimed to connect the homeless with ser-

vice providers as they vacated the property.

“By the time we’re finished cleaning it up, we’ll have a better sense of how many people were there,” said Holitzki.

Meanwhile, the City continues to work towards opening a new, 40-bed shelter at the former Sleep Shop on Lougheed Highway.

The temporary shelter is due to open in October, and will run for six months under a low barrier model, which would allow the City to break up the camp on Cliff Avenue.

Until the shelter opens, the Cliff Avenue camp is considered a protest, and would require a legal injunction to shut down, said City officials.

One man is recovering in hospital after being rescued from the banks of the Alouette River on Monday afternoon.

The man might owe his life to a group of quick-thinking students, who discovered him while they were floating down the river, said Mark Smitton, Maple Ridge’s assistant fire chief.

He was lying unresponsive on the bank of the river when the group from Trinity Western University checked on him, prompting a quick decision to call 911.

After enlisting aid from some nearby homeowners on 127th Avenue, near where the man was found, emergency personnel arrived on scene to complete the rescue.

It wasn’t clear what events led to the situation, but firefighters treated the man in case of hypothermia, said Smitton.

A medical helicopter was called, but ultimately was not used.

Saturday’s wicked windstorm – that cut power to more than half a million residents in the Lower Mainland – was a chance to break out the camp stove, barbecue, and candles, play games, go for a bike ride, and enjoy “uninterrupted family time,” said Maple Ridge resident Carla Smith Sulina.

Sulina was one of many residents who found creative ways to hunker down, while BC Hydro crews feverishly worked non-stop to restore power.

And depending on where people lived, that wait lasted as long as four days for some area residents.

As late as Tuesday night, and into Wednesday morning, a few hundred customers still remained without power, tweeted BC Hydro.

The storm is believed to be the single largest outage event in the utility company’s history.

Jobs: Only important stat

T

here’s really only one statistic that matters when it comes to the economy, to our personal economic well-being.

Does the amount of money coming in cover the amount that I need to keep my head above water?

Whether it’s from Old Age Security and CPP, a full-time or part-time job (or two jobs, or three) from EI or savings, what every Canadian fears is being personally in the red, unable to afford a better life, or even the basics.

We’re officially in a recession now, and while we’re assured it’s likely to be short lived, in the short term, it means we’re going to be drowned in statistics and analysis – all of which will be simplified by the politicians who are hustling for your vote.

It’s often hard to take either very cheerful or very alarming economic news seriously unless it includes the word “jobs.”

Over the past few years, we’ve been told that we needed to spend more to get rid of the recession, but that we have too much personal debt and not enough savings. It’s the best time to buy a house because of low interest rates, but the housing market is also becoming dangerously unaffordable. We’ve been told that our resource-based economy is robust or fragile, that things are looking up or that they’re about to tank.

We do hear about the unemployment rate, but in our 24-hour news cycle, which has been increasingly infiltrated by business news that was once of interest only to a tiny segment of the population, that single stat can be lost in a sea of other numbers.

What we need in Canada is a long-term, stable reduction in unemployment, coupled with a strong social safety net to support those who can’t find work.

We hope that each of the political parties currently scrambling to either heap up blame or justify a recession can keep their eye on that prize.

By the way, the current unemployment rate is 6.8 per cent. It’s not the highest it’s been this year, or the lowest. But that’s the number that matters right now.

is far more cynicism about the value of that responsibility, especially among young people. It’s something I don’t fully understand, because practically all my friends were Liberals or Progressive Conservatives or New Democrats or Social Crediters (that was a significant federal party in the 1960s, in fact holding the balance of power in the Lester Pearson minority before Pierre Trudeau led the Liberals to a majority while we were all in our teens).

We couldn’t wait for the opportunity – the responsibility – to fill out our ballots and add them to the nation’s voice.

After 19 came 20. Well, then you’re not a teenager anymore, are you? Once you clock that 20th birthday, you’re a fullblown adult.

At 21, it became legal to cross the border and take in the dirty movies in Blaine. You’ll have to refer to a previous column to see how that turned out!

Then came the void of 22. It was my first birthday with no significance.

No voting. No dirty movies. No adult-

hood landmarks. Its only significance was its lack of significance.

Other than the cost of insuring a car dropping dramatically on every young driver’s 25th birthday, there was nothing significant left.

Until 29.

I can’t explain it, but I went into a yearlong funk, thinking about the imminent arrival of my 30th birthday. The starting point of the inescapable downhill slide.

The beginning of the end.

I imagined looking into a mirror and catching only fleeting glimpses of my life fading into an ever-darkening background.

And when I woke up on my 30th birthday, the depression was over. It was simply all gone.

There wasn’t any rejoicing or anything, just an easy and comfortable acknowledgment that life wasn’t over, and there was plenty left ahead.

And all birthdays became unimportant.

Letters Homelessness: Volunteer finds truth Dear Editor,

City council members have obviously never dealt with the homeless population in any way.

These citizens are adults, not naughty children.

How do you think you are going to see a difference?

I have worked with these people, and I have had a brother and his wife who were homeless.

“Why don’t they just get a job,” you say.

Well, my brother has a leg missing, is 60 and after working for most of his life without benefits (which happens without full-time work because businesses don’t want to pay benefits), is left with nothing.

His wife, after two brain tumors, also worked most of her life, is now losing her memory so is unemployable.

You would think that the government disability would help them.

However, the gov-

ernment has so many hoops and rules that many do not qualify, or the process takes years.

I get the feeling that the mayor thinks if she builds a new shelter (in a community where the residents will resist) the homeless will flock to it.

What if they don’t?

Because, they won’t.

The Caring Place provides as much support as they can afford to.

They offer showers and laundry for those who need to clean up

for job interviews.

How many of these people are not employable because of health issues or age?

By removing a support that needs more funding and volunteers to work with these people, what do you think is going to be different?

Before you judge people, find out the truth by volunteering.

The true homeless have left the area because the “junkie thieves” have taken over Cliff Avenue.

They were supplied with porta potties but they are crapping on the sidewalks.

Facebook feedback When intersection lights in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows went dark from Saturday’s windstorm, it was up to drivers to observe four-way stop procedures. Most did, but a few didn’t.

“It was nuts. My husband and I saw someone fly around us while we were stopped at an intersection with no lights. Almost an accident there and then my brother was t-boned because some lady didn’t stop at the intersection.”

this issue has made me very disappointed with them.

There is no compassion or real understanding for the workers who have the heartbreaking job of trying to make the homeless lives bearable.

These workers and organizations are overwhelmed with the growing number of homeless.

Blame and punishment is a cruel way to govern.

The City is looking at the eyesore, responding to media, but has no real understanding of the real cause of this widespread issue.

The other thing the Caring Place does is feed some of the community’s many hungry children.

These issues are not going to go away with a new building or putting blame on the Caring Place.

Shame on you all!

Signs evade City rules Political signage is popping up around town.

Election season often gives homeowners and businesses a chance to temporarily redecorate – with the popular colours this season being green, blue, red, and orange.

But while Maple Ridge’s sign bylaw from 1992 covers some prohibitions for electoral signage, enforcement is limited to signs for municipal elections, explained Liz Holitzki, director of licenses, permits and bylaws with the City of Maple Ridge.

“Certainly, if a sign is a safety hazard, we would take steps to move it,” said Holitzki.

But the most the City can do is forward complaints onto Elections Canada, which would then handle the offending sign.

There are usually far fewer candidates in a federal race than a municipal election,

A series of signs in Maple Ridge survived the windstorm on the last weekend of August. pointed out Holitzki, which would mean less signs overall across the two Cities.

Holitzki added that an update to the current bylaw would be reviewed by council in the coming weeks.

However, a newer sign bylaw in Pitt Meadows explicitly outlines rules for provincial and federal campaign signs in the City.

In Pitt, signs are not permitted in the following locations: on any bridge or overpass structure, on any City Building, in any park, in any highway median, median or boulevard garden, or in the internal median of the Lougheed Highway.

The City also requires signs to come down within five days of the election ending.

Elections Canada’s website has a guide for those still thirsty for more sign rules.

Property owners and condominium operators are not allowed to restrict their tenants’ election signs, provided those signs are placed in reasonable locations, with a reasonable limit on size.

The website (www. elections.ca) offers a reminder that tampering with political signs is illegal under the Canada Elections Act. The federal election is set for Oct. 19.

Volunteers prepared lunches at The Salvation Army Caring Place. The bagged lunches go to students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows during the school year.

taff and volunteers at The Salvation Army Caring Place are soldiering on, once again providing free lunches for underprivileged students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows once the school year gets underway next week.

Through a program operated

by The Salvation Army and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, the Caring Place provided more than 28,000 bagged lunches to students in need this past school year.

The program returns Sept. 8, with 175 bagged lunches being prepared for school children in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows every school day.

The lunches are handed out by each school’s staff to preserve student anonymity, and provided to children who are identified as not receiving adequate nutrition from home.

Arrest ends lengthy investigation

Ridge Meadows Mounties wrapped up a six-month-long dial-a-dope investigation with the arrest of a 39-year-old Vancouver man last week.

Police allege the suspect was trafficking in controlled substances in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows during their investigation.

His arrest resulted in a seizure of illegal drugs that were destined for local distribution, insisted RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. www.

“This has been a long,

extensive investigation involving a ‘dial-a-dope’ operation that was in business between Vancouver and our communities,” Dunlop said.

On Aug. 26, investigators allege the suspect made several drug transactions before he was arrested and a large quantity of what police believe to be heroin and crack cocaine were seized.

The arrest and subsequent seizure of the illegal drugs provided police with grounds for a search.com warrant of his

That search – early the following morning – netted more items “pertaining to the illegal distribution of drugs being seized,” Dunlop explained.

A total of 345 individual packages of both heroin and crack were seized along with a “very substantial” amount of cash.

Several Maple Ridge children could be trying out for Cirque du Soleil in the not to distant future... Vancouver Circus School lead a one-week circus camp at The ACT, that culminated in a student show on the theatre’s main stage recently. The program – offered through the parks and rec department – involved about 20 students ranging in age from six to 16, learning a variety of skills such as aerial silk, trampoline, swinging trapeze, juggling, and acrobalance. Among the students in attendance was seven-year-old Christina Jones, a Grade 3 student at Albion Elementary.

Before heading back to school next week, the Pitt family of Maple Ridge took a summer vacation down to Cannon Beach, in Oregon. Eight-yearold Carter Pitt and his younger brother Brady, six, had a picture taken with a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES.

Darla George of Pitt River 4-H Swine Club raised both the champion carcass hog and the grand champion fe d hog. Both animals were auctioned off last week at the 4-H Festival at the PNE. The local club members won top places in all categories. Of the 12 hogs called into the fed hog market championship round, nine of them were from Pitt River 4-H Swine Club.

With the proceeds of their hog sale, 4-H members can reinvest in new hogs for next year.

A vibrant theatre community in Maple Ridge is about to get a little bit bigger, as the new Cast and Crew Theatre Arts Academy gets set to open its doors this September.

The organization is the result of months of planning from longtime theatre-moms Heather Beckett and Shelley Boe, who have worked with a variety of Maple Ridge theatre production companies.

The goal of the new academy is to offer youth the chance to hone their theatre skills across all Riley Dougan areas of Theatre a producInstructor tion.

“This is something for all kids, regardless of their skill level,” said Madelaine Beckett, the marketing coordinator with Cast and Crew.

The company will operate out of the North Fraser Centre, which was formerly Whonnock Elementary.

The space allows the company to be flexible with its programming, said Beckett.

“We can expand to fill the space if we have the numbers,” she said.

Beckett said “a neat thing” about Cast and Crew is that the program will also train members on the production side of theatre – all students will be instructed on every role.

The company’s lead instructor, Riley Dougan, performed with Xtreme Theatre, and has danced with Dance Barn Studios.

Ridge Canoe and Kayak club competes in Ottawa Local paddlers took part in nationals.

More than 1, 200 paddlers converged on Ottawa at the Rideau Canoe Club last week, during national championships.

And the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club was well-represented.

The team had a solid start to the week, as Mathew Koehler pulled away from the crowd in the mass-start 6 k.m. race to win gold. His teammates Justin Won and Tyler Demidoff took 14th, and 20th place, respectively.

Koehler and Won also combined for silver in the U17 K2 1,000m.

The canoe duo of Keffer Hohnson and Sean McBeath had a strong week, winning silver in the junior mens C2 1,000m, and placing fifth in the 200m.

Just a month after returning from the junior world championships in Portugal, Alex Brent picked up a silver with Brian Malfesi in the junior K2 1,000.
