Local powerlifter making her mark on the world stage Bernice Fuss has landed several honours for her tremendous skills

L

ong gone are the days of powerlifting being seen as a ‘boys’ club – a new type of powerlifter has swept the international scene over the last 15 years.

While she may not have been the first ever female powerlifter, Bernice Fuss of Red Deer has certainly made waves across the world during the last 15 years of her powerlifting career.

There are few 59-year-old women throughout the world who can say they can bench press raw 248.5 lbs, squat raw 352 lbs, single ply dead lift 418 lbs, and single ply squat 374 lbs. – even fewer yet who can boast multiple Olympia powerlifting medals.

Although some may say power lifters merely pick up heavy things and put them back down, for Fuss there is so much more to the sport.

While she has always considered herself an active woman, Fuss was never serious about fitness until she began body building in the late 80s. During her time as a body builder, she was continuously approached by a number of individuals encouraging her to give powerlifting a try.

“I just kept putting it off, never really thinking it was quite for me – then finally there was a meet in Red Deer and I figured I would humour the individuals who had invited me and go down and watch.”

The rest was history in the making. Fuss explained it wasn’t long after watching the first meet that she would fall in love with both powerlifting as well as her future husband.

“While I was watching that first meet here in Red Deer I remember just being very impressed by this one woman’s size – her structure was unbelievable, and I said to my friend Randy I just wanted a little bit of what she had going on.”

She agreed to meet with Randy and begin training and this is where she would meet a man who had recently gone through a divorce.

“The man said to my friend that if Randy was going to start training me he was going to have to babysit me – this guy was adamant that under no circumstances would he be watching out for me.”

A year later she and the man who refused to ‘babysit’ her were married and by this time she was well on her way to being an international powerlifting sensation.

“Never in a million years would I have ever thought this is something I would be doing, but I have never regretted for a single moment joining the power lifting world,” said Fuss, who one year finished

“You can’t control the judges’ personal decisions - where as powerlifting is black and white, you either lifted the weight or you didn’t.”

by Bruce and Wendy Greig. She explained during her time at the Greigs’ gym she was the only female power lifter from Red Deer competing in power lifting at the time and one of few in Alberta as a whole.

“Southern Alberta had a larger following because of an incredible gym out of Okotoks,” explained Fuss. “There was an incredible degree of professionalism and camaraderie that I will likely never see again in my lifetime clinging to the walls of that gym.”

For years, Fuss and her husband trav-

elled the world and trained together until tragedy struck in 2010 when her husband passed away unexpectedly following a competition in Prague.

“After my husband passed - I went down to the states to compete again and I really felt like that camaraderie wasn’t there anymore,” explained Fuss.

This led Fuss to create a league of her own – a league where no matter where you came from or what background you had, all persons would be equal when they stepped onto the lifting platform.

This led her to the creation of the Canadian Power lifting League (CPL) in 2014, an affiliate of the International Powerlifting League.

“I just got this feeling that I wanted to bring a solid, professional and accountable federation into Canada and provide a way for young lifters to go down south and open up even bigger doors,” she said.

Since the inception of her league, they have hosted the 2014 CPL National Championship as well as the CPL Western Canadian

Bash 2015 both held in Prince George B.C., with this year’s 2015 CPL National Championship taking place over this past weekend in Red Deer at the Body Basics gym.

“After my husband passed away, many of the people we used to train with and knew from the power (lifting) world jumped right up and decided they wanted to help in any way especially with CPL, so it’s been a huge help to have support around.”

She jokingly added it’s been nice to have ‘the old boys’ club of powerlifting” help her out. “People tend to forget it was the old boys who built this sport,” “We’re lucky now because we have the Internet and if we want to know something we can just google it, but these old school lifters learned simply by trial and error.”

Fuss has always been more than a powerlifter - she is a mother, grandmother, friend, coach and mentor.

Council supports RDC’s quest for polytechnic status

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express City council voted unanimously to back a Notice of Motion introduced in July to support Red Deer College in landing polytechnic status.

The Notice of Motion was submitted by Councilor Paul Harris on July 6th and tabled on July 20th, as council wanted more information on the polytechnic university model from RDC officials.

“A polytechnic university is the vehicle that our board of governors has chosen to achieve degree granting status for our institution,” said Joel Ward, RDC president, adding it’s been something RDC officials have been eyeing for about 25 years.

“Your support, as outlined in Councilor Harris’s motion, will go a long way

in supporting this aspiration.” He explained that a polytechnic university is a comprehensive university that offers professional, career-focused programs in the arts, social and behavioural-related sciences, health and wellness, education, engineering and trades and technology.

“We need to be able to offer trades and technology certificates and diplomas and bachelor degrees that make sense for Central Alberta.”

Ward added that it’s a designation that is recognized around the world.

“It’s a progressive, forward-thinking model,” he said. “In simple terms, it’s all the things we currently do plus the ability to grant our own degrees.”

There is currently the granting of some degrees via partnerships with the Universities of Calgary and

He said, for example, that many Students’ Association presidents at RDC have left after they’ve completed their studies there to attend schools elsewhere to finish degrees. “I haven’t seen any of them come back,” he said. “We also did a survey across Central Alberta, and 95 per cent of those who responded are in favour of degree granting status for our institution.”

tion and advanced education outlining how the new university would be governed, complete with the duties, responsibilities, and names of the governing bodies within the newlydesignated institution.

“There may be some negotiation with government officials regarding some of the details but it is important that the provisions in the post-secondary learning act are fulfilled.”

Councilor Ken Johnston said that one of the strengths of Red Deer is, “Our ability to come together as a community around what’s best for the community, and leverage those particular relationships.

“Red Deer College is known for its abilities around research and development as well. This would leverage that particular area – it will keep our students at home and it will continue to provide incredible lifeblood to our businesses and our abili-

ties for research and development.”

Mayor Tara Veer said she thought it was, “Important and essential that City council take a formal position and support Red Deer College in this critical initiative, recognizing that Red Deer College is one of our key community partners.

“If we’re to engage in one of the most strategic initiatives that we could in the community, this would certainly be one of them,” she said, adding while Red Deer is one of the youngest communities in Canada with tremendous potential and possibilities, the risk is also significant when it comes to losing students and citizens who have to finish their studies elsewhere.

“Ultimately, we would be losing not only potential students but also a skilled labour force.”

School districts set to launch new year of studies

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express It’s back to the classroom this week for thousands of local students as Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools welcomed students Sept.

1st and the Red Deer Public School District begins Sept.

3rd.

There is much to look forward to across the region, said Stu Henry, superintendent of schools for the Red Deer Public School Division.

“First of all, I’m very excited to be doing a new job with an amazing school district,” said Henry, who took over from Piet Langstraat who took the post of superintendent of schools for the Greater Victoria School District in B.C. “We have such excited and enthusiastic staff that are raring to go for the year.”

Henry was the associate superintendent – learning services, and has been an administrator with Red Deer Public Schools since he joined the district 10 years ago. He has been a teacher and school administrator for 28 years.

“We also have a newlyassembled team in Central Services,” he said. “So there is a lot of enthusiasm and excitement with the new team.”

On the infrastructure front, he pointed out that it will be terrific to see students returning to the newly-renovated Annie L. Gaetz School this week as well. The renovation and modernization of the school included complete architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical upgrades as well as major reconfigurations of the school’s spaces.

“We are also starting work on our new Inglewood school soon.” The $11 million project is set to be open in September of 2017.

He added that $600,000 from the City of Red Deer will also see some community space incorporated into the design.

“I think that’s an excellent partnership as well.”

Prior to joining district administration, Henry was principal of Eastview Middle School and was a teacher and administrator in Chinook’s Edge School Division.

Henry said it’s an honour for him to serve in this role and he appreciates the confidence the board has

demonstrated in him. “I welcome the opportunity to continue the great work our district has undertaken to best meet the needs of our students. We have an outstanding and committed staff with tremendous support from parents and the community to provide great learning opportunities for students.”

Paul Mason, superintendent of schools for Red Deer Catholic, said he and his staff are very excited about the new school year.

“We are once again projecting an increase in enrolment,” he said. “With the past number of years, our actual enrolments have exceeded our projections.

“It’s absolutely my favourite time of year – it’s a wonderful time to be in the schools. The energy and the vitality in the hallways and classrooms is so invigorating.

“It’s also wonderful to see that parents see a faithbased Catholic education system as an option that’s good for their children – we are excited about that.”

There are space concerns, however, but some capital projects in the works will help with that, he said.

Included in the broadening scope of infrastructure projects is St. Joseph’s High School will be able to accommodate 900 students with a build-out to 1,200 students. The school will be located near 30 Ave. and 67 St. and is on track to open in September of 2017.

“We’ve also got significant renovations at St. Marguerite’s in Innisfail and St. Francis here in Red Deer is looking to begin additions/renovations/modernizations to increase our capacities.”

Several other schools have had modular classes added to them over the summer as well.

Meanwhile, as the new school year begins, staff from the transportation department of Red Deer Catholic, Chinook’s Edge along with Prairie Bus Lines are working on a special bus safety program.

The Stop on Red, Kids Ahead! campaign is meant to remind motorists of the important of following proper bus safety protocols.

The joint local safety committee, which works collaboratively on several different transportation projects, received a grant

through Alberta Transportation to offset the costs of the campaign.

The have created public announcements and have designed magnetic decals for use on company vehicles throughout the area.

“It’s a simple message, but it is vitally important,” said Kelli Pickett, safety and training coordinator with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. “The school divisions involved in this

campaign transport over 55,000 everyday.

“Drivers are taking the safety of our students into their hands and it’s paramount that the general public knows how to respond when they’re driving near a school bus.”

Certain communities within the participating divisions have bylaws that prohibit school buses from using red flashing lights and motorists need to be

extra-vigilant when driving safely near a stopped school bus, officials say.

In all cases, driving slowly and with caution near school buses will help ensure the safety of students throughout the region.

The two-week, ‘Stop on Red, Kids Ahead’ campaign launched Aug. 27th and will run again during School Bus Safety Week in October.

“We have also connected

with the RCMP to conduct safety stops during Bus Safety Week, when they will continue to distribute this information to drivers,” said Scott Hucal, general manager of Prairie Bus Lines Ltd. “The entire awareness campaign will help ensure this school bus safety message has a strong presence in all our communities as the new year begins.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION Campaign to bolster awareness of sexual assault Earlier this week, a province-wide campaign called ‘I Believe You’ was launched to help further bolster awareness about the under-reported crime of sexual assault.

The Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS), in affiliation with post-secondary institutions and the Government of Alberta unveiled campaign details in Edmonton on Monday.

According to the AASAS, sexual assault is, as mentioned, a severely under-reported crime - around 97% of incidents go unreported. That is simply unimaginable and heartbreaking.

Those behind the campaign say that primarily, education is the key. The public needs to see a heightened awareness on the issue, which will in turn empower victims to come forward. To think such a campaign is so necessary is a sad truth in society today, where cruelty and abuse of all kinds are frighteningly common and often, as indicated, go on repeatedly behind closed

doors. Officials also point out launching the campaign is a form of prevention because people who receive a positive response are, “Significantly more likely to get help, seek justice, and help stop sexual assault.”

Another aspect of the campaign is to inform citizens on how to respond to hearing a friend or loved one had been assaulted.

According to the AASAS, polling by Leger Research shows only 15% of Albertans ‘strongly agree’ they would know what to say if someone told them that she or he had been sexually assaulted.

Sometimes asking the most helpful questions can be much harder to do than we might think. According to campaign officials, “Responders worry about doing more harm by saying the wrong thing. It’s human to want to give advice, but it’s much better to listen than talk. If you do talk, the best things to say are simple words of support and compassion – ‘I’m sorry that hap-

pened/it’s not your fault/I believe you.’

According to the Association’s web site, more than half of all sexual assaults take place in the victim’s own home, or within 1.6 kms of it. Another 20% of sexual assaults happen in the home of a friend, neighbour or relative.

Meanwhile, there is power in words – if we can be the kind of people that victims feel they can open up to, there is so much progress and healing that can flow from that. It’s about putting others first and letting them talk – even when you are troubled about what you might hear.

As officials point out, it’s indeed the openness and willingness to dialogue that helps victims so much. “We believe that open dialogue is critical—for both parties - to ensure that justice is served. The role of first responders is not to play judge and jury. It’s to listen and empathize.”

It’s tempting to think with the society we live in today, there is little in the way of

issues or sensitive subjects that remain in the shadows. But that simply isn’t the case.

There have been tremendous strides in many areas to be sure. Stigma over many issues has diminished or completely been wiped away.

However, there is much in the way of improvement still needed in many other areas. Silence, in the case of sexual assault for example, is a horrendous roadblock to not only justice but to recovery as well. If people don’t feel free to talk about what has happened to them; if they don’t feel safe to be vulnerable even with a trusted friend or family member, then there is certainly a long road ahead.

But there is hope. As organizers have pointed out, this campaign has already garnered significant support.

“This coordinated response will help us dramatically improve outcomes for survivors of sexual assault.”

Greece is an example of the failure of modern economics Economics is a subject with a long and distinguished pedigree, featuring such towering intellectuals and philosophers as Plato and Aristotle to economists like Sir James Steuart and Francois Quesnay, the Frenchman who gave the study its modern foundations. Unfortunately, the discipline split into two distinctive subject areas in the 20th century – economics and political science.

Each charted a different course of academic inquiry.

I have always maintained that the intellectual divorce between economics and political science was a big mistake. It made economics more abstract, lacking in political context and devoid of real world pragmatism.

The failure to predict the global financial crisis of 2008, our inability to contain the economic contagion that swept around the

PASSARIS world and the ongoing economic recession accompanied with mercilessly high unemployment rates support that observation.

In all of this, Greece stands out as the poster child of what ails modern economics. On Jan. 25th, the political landscape in Greece changed in a profound and radical manner.

The electoral victory of a fledgling left wing political party, Syriza, trounced the two traditional ruling parties – New Democracy and PASOK. Syriza promised to repudiate the austerity mea-

sures that were conditions for the first and second bailouts to Greece by the European Central Bank, the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund.

The young, articulate and charismatic leader of the Syriza party and now Greece’s youngest ever Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, went to Brussels to stare down the trio of international creditors and demand that all austerity measures cease here and now. However, the international creditors would not budge.

Tsipras’s choice for his finance minister was an academic turned politician, Yanis Varoufakis.

About a year ago this month I attended a book launch in Athens where Varoufakis presented the Greek version of his book on anti-austerity. Tsipras

also spoke and lauded the new book as academic confirmation of his party’s stand on anti-austerity for Greece.

Varoufakis has a PhD in economics at the University of Essex in England.

He wrote a textbook on game theory and lectured at the University of Athens, Greece, the University of Sydney, Australia and the University of Texas.

Varoufakis is well-versed in economic theory but lacks the skill-set to navigate the political landscape.

I was not surprised when he resigned as finance minister after only five months in office. I was told that, on his watch, meetings of the Euro group finance ministers turned into graduate seminars.

Varoufakis spoke for two hours on the adverse economic consequences of austerity policies, irri-

tating his political savvy European counterparts so much that even legitimate requests from Greece were denied. It is common knowledge that an implicit condition of a third bailout for Greece was the removal of Varoufakis from the finance portfolio.

Without Varoufakis around the negotiating table, Greece agreed to very harsh austerity measures for a third bailout of 86 billion Euros. This was done out of desperation; Greece was facing the advent of the economic apocalypse in the form of the near collapse of its banking and financial system.

However, the adoption of the foreign imposed austerity measures fomented a rebellion in the Tsipras government. More than 40 of his own members of parliament voted against him and the bailout agreement.

He only managed to push it through with the help of members of the opposition.

Sensing that he would not survive a non-confidence vote in the Greek parliament, Tsipras resigned, only six months after he was called upon to form an anti-austerity government. New elections will be held towards the end of September.

The moral of this story is that contemporary economists should be well-versed in economic theory and the fundamentals of policy making but they should also be able to navigate the political landscape of the 21st century. Without the political dimension, economics lacks potency in a global political context.

Murder trial starts next week

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The trial for a Red Deer man who has been charged with murder in connection to the death of a Calgary woman in 2012 is set to get underway in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench next week.

Nathan Desharnais, 26, has been charged with second degree murder and offering indignity to human remains after the body of Talia Nellie Meguinis, 27, was found at a recycling facility in the Riverside Industrial area on Feb. 22nd, 2012 after police received a complaint at about 9:28 a.m. of a deceased female. Red Deer City RCMP General Investigation Section and Red Deer Forensic Identification Section were called in to assist with the investigation. After further investigation, RCMP said Meguinis was not murdered in the location her body was found.

Desharnais’ arrest is a result of an extensive seven-month investigation that involved the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section, Major Crimes Unit, Forensic Identification Unit, Victims Services and the Police Dog Service. The Calgary MCU, the ‘K’ Division Special Tactical Operations, Polygraph Sections in Calgary and Edmonton, the Calgary Police Service, and the Tsuu T’ina police also assisted.

There were 40 investigators who were dedicated to this case with more than 25,000 man-hours spent on the investigation.

“Talia was a resident of the Calgary area who we believe arrived in Red Deer on approximately Feb. 17th,” said RCMP Const.

Gary Kroeker, at the time of Desharnais’ arrest, adding police will not be releasing the cause of death as the case is now before the courts.

He added police believe Desharnais and Meguinis had just met the weekend she was murdered. She was traveling back home to Calgary from northern Alberta and stopped in Red Deer to visit family.

RCMP Cpl. Ben Scott added no other arrests will be made in the case.

He added there were many challenges

during the investigation.

“Some of the hurdles we encountered from the onset were due to the fact that she was found in a recycling facility and she was unknown to us at the time. Typically when we have a murder investigation we have a starting point and we know who the victim is. We didn’t have that. It took us a few days before we knew her identity so we were playing catch up from the get-go.”

During a press conference after Desharnais’ arrest in 2012, which was held at the RCMP headquarters in Red Deer, Meguinis’ family attended to speak with the media. “The last seven months have been a very sad and difficult time for our family. We loved Talia very much and every day we miss her more,” said Sally Simeon, Meguinis’ mother. “When the police told us that Talia had been murdered, we could not believe the news. Every day since then we have prayed that whoever killed her would be caught. Today, our family is relieved that someone has been charged with Talia’s murder. Our hope is that he will be brought to justice.

“I would just like people to know that Talia was a beautiful young woman. She was funny and loved to make others laugh. She was a devoted and loving mother and hard worker. She was generous to fault. She is greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. Our family is still grieving a great loss.”

Desharnais’ trial runs from Sept. 8th to Oct. 2nd in Red Deer.

Meanwhile, in June of 2014, Desharnais was found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison after being charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and unlawful confinement and imprisonment as a result of an incident that took place at his Red Deer home in June of 2012.

The charge of unlawful confinement was dropped by the court after the crown stayed the charge.

Arens set to appeal conviction next week

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The Alberta Court of Appeal will hear the case of Rodney Arens on Sept. 9th in Calgary.

Arens, 37, of Red Deer, appealed the nearly sixyear sentence he was given in the spring of 2014 for his role in the death of a 13-year-old Red Deer boy on Canada Day in 2010.

Arens was sentenced to five years and six months in prison. He was given credit for 185 days for time served before and during the trial.

His sentence also included a driving prohibition for 10 years.

In 2010, police said Anouluck ‘Jeffrey’ Chanminaraj, 13, was riding in a Honda Civic with his then 18-year-old brother Jamie and 20-year-old sister Stephanie, who was

driving, at about 11 p.m. on Canada Day when a Dodge Ram pick-up truck crashed into the passenger side of the car.

Their car was turning left through the intersection of Taylor Dr. and Kerry Wood Dr. when it was struck by the pick-up truck. The siblings were on their way to see the Canada Day fireworks. Jeffrey was pronounced dead at the scene.

During sentencing submissions of the case, Crown Prosecutor Wayne Silliker sought six years in prison for Arens with a 10-year driving prohibition. Defense lawyer Donna DerieGillespie said that a fouryear sentence and a five to 10-year driving prohibition would be appropriate.

Before handing down his sentence Justice Kirk Sisson said, “Jeffrey’s loss will never be forgotten.”

He said the sentence would act as a deterrent for Arens and for others in the community who may look at this case and see what could happen to them if they chose the same actions. “It is to promote in you a sense of responsibility for your actions,” Sisson told Arens.

“It appears you went to great lengths to not take responsibility for your actions and that your selfdestructive behaviour continued after you caused the death of a 13-year-old boy on Canada Day in 2010.”

Arens also offered an apology in court before the sentence was handed down.

“I’m very sorry to the family for the loss and that I was involved in such a tragic event. I remember the day like it was yesterday. This has had an impact on me also.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

RDC unveils plans for Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Plans for the Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport were detailed during a major announcement at Red Deer College last week.

The project is slated to be completed in the fall of 2018, and will host a number of events in the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Officials said the Centre will also further increase the capabilities of RDC to expand and enhance programming across many areas.

The estimated project cost of $88 million will be funded through a mix of donations, partnerships and government funding.

To date officials have about $50 million raised. In the fall, they will be moving forward with a fundraising initiative.

“From both a College and community perspective, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities this Centre will create,” said Shelley Ralston, chair of the RDC board of governors. “This facility is essential for RDC to continue to meet the needs of our community including achieving our long-term vision of becoming a polytechnic university,” she said.

“Out of many things that have been on the board’s agenda for a number of years – one is degree granting status, and two, facili-

RDC President Joel Ward added that the new facility is also about ensuring a bold, forward-focused future for the communities of Central Alberta.

“This will be the new building that everyone will see. The one million people that drive up and down this highway every single year will see this facility. It’s an iconic building and a great design,” he said. “It actually complements this beautiful campus.

“Partnering with the City of Red Deer to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games has allowed RDC to realize this facility which has been

in the planning stages for many years.

“It will also be available for public use. Community use and those partnerships are key,” he added.

“But most important, as our board chair mentioned, it’s a pivotal piece for our growth and development.

Great programs delivered in modern facilities strengthen our case for polytechnique university status,” he said. “Achieving this status simply means offering everything we currently do and also lets us grant our own degrees that are relevant and necessary for the learners of Central Alberta.”

It would also go a long way to retaining graduates of RDC as residents to the City and area as well, he

said. “Make no mistake – this is more than being just about a building. It’s about ensuring a bold, forwardfocused future for the College and for the communities of Central Alberta,” he said.

RDC Students’ Association President Maryanne McGrath said the extensive benefits to both current and future students will go beyond just new amenities at the College.

“The Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport will enhance student life and help foster both mental and physical wellness,” she said. “By providing our students with stateof-the-art education and recreation facilities, we encourage them to get their education in Red Deer but to make Central Alberta their home.”

Work is set to begin this fall with major construction due to start early next year.

Meanwhile, several goals for the facility include creating critical components required to further RDC’s vision, as already mentioned of becoming a polytechnic university, supporting students and programs primarily in RDC’s School of Health Sciences and providing new sport spaces to serve a role as classroom and lab learning spaces for students.

Community access is also a key part of the plan via access to venues that meet provincial, national and international sporting standards, providing improved training spaces to support local sports and creating new opportunities to host events and tournaments.

Upgraded facilities will

also provide a new home to RDC athletics teams and additional event space and dry land training during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

There will be 1,200 seat capacity with ability to add an additional 400 seats as well.

Athletic therapy, a high performance training lab and fitness/testing centres will also create new opportunities to support and expand academic programming at the College.

An Olympic-sized ice surface is another feature, and is required for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

The ice surface will also offer new partnership opportunities for the College and various partners including Hockey Alberta and Red Deer Minor Hockey to meet increasing demand for local ice times in the City and region.

Dreeshen gearing up for fall vote

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Red Deer-Mountain View Conservative incumbent Earl Dreeshen’s campaign is well underway as he meets with local constituents and gauges the issues in the community.

It’s a new configuration for the election, set for Oct. 19th, with the old Red Deer riding now divided into two parts – Red DeerLacombe and Red Deer Mountain View.

“I’ve been doing the same sort of thing that I always do,” he said when asked about the lengthy campaign, which was launched on the August long weekend.

“You go out and meet your constituents, and that’s what we’ve been doing,” he said, adding he’s also met with positive response among those living in new areas of representation in the reconfigured riding. “It’s a case of meeting as many people as you can,” he said. “I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback – people have been telling us that we are on the right track federally,” he said, adding issues that rise to the top are concerns over the economy and jobs. “We are trying to make sure we have an environment for economic growth.

“When I’m at the door talking to families, they are interested in the support they are getting – they understand and appreciate the extra dollars that have gone into their pockets because of the benefits that are there through the Universal Childcare benefit or simply the fact that we continue

to reduce taxes so especially a lot of lowincome earners are completely off the tax role. That’s really been one of the key parts.”

Dreeshen was elected in 2008 to represent the Red Deer riding.

Meanwhile, seeing the provincial sweep to NDP in Alberta’s election earlier this year doesn’t concern him on the federal level, he said, pointing out what he sees as the key differences between the parties.

He said federally, the NDP are supportive of keeping Alberta’s natural resources in the ground. “They don’t understand the economy. Basically, they’ve been working against Alberta’s interests.”

Dreeshen said getting the product to tidewater is the part that is going, “To help us build our schools, and help us with our health care. It’s going to help us with all of those social issues and infrastructure issues that we need.”

He added there can be a tendency for some to divert a discussion to a topic that suits them, but, “When you are talking to individuals at the door, they’re concerned about the things that are important to them – jobs, their families and security.”

Those are the critical issues, he said.

As to issues such as the ongoing Duffy trial, Dreeshen said the Prime Minister has spoken about personal accountability.

“That’s what we’ve done. I’m expected to work properly and to meet high standards, and so is everyone else.”

Food forest continues to be developed south of the City

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A 25-acre section of land situated along Piper Creek, south of the City of Red Deer LandďŹ ll, saw a host of volunteers this past weekend as work continued on the land set to host an 11,000 sq. ft. edible cold temperate food forest.

Before the food forest can be planted in the fall of 2016, the planting area needed to be prepped to create suitable conditions for growth of the food producing plants.

Around 15 volunteers gathered at the site over the course of two days and worked to clear vegetation from the two pollinator beds as well as the larger future food forest bed.

Volunteers coordinated efforts to create water harvesting ditches on the food forest bed, as well as covered the two pollinator beds with black plastic mulch over the planting area to prevent weeds from growing over the next season.

The work bee and food forest are part of the Piper Creek Restoration Project, which will see the restoration of a degraded riparian

ecosystem along the Piper Creek through a permaculture design, with perma-culture being described as a system of agricultural and social design principles centered around simulating patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems.

The project has been headed by a local group, ReThink Red Deer – an organization which focuses on renewable energy, recycling and waste, general sustainability, as well as issues related to garden and food supply.

Project Lead for Rethink Red Deer, Rene Michalak, explained work on Saturday was a good start to being able to plant in the fall of 2016. “The area is quite disturbed because it was a former intensive grazing location,� said Michalak. “The impact on the land has caused the typical response of large volumes of invasive and noxious weeds, so we have to come in and repair that land and look at how we approach the management of this land in the future through a different lens. “The two pollinator beds are now effectively covered

ReThink Red Deer have partnered with supporting organizations such as the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance, the Red Deer River Naturalists, the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society, Alberta Food Matters, the Canadian Association for Rainwater Management - Prairie Chapter, Red Deer County and the City of Red Deer as landowner holding observer status.

Also partnered with ReThink is Cows and Fish (Alberta Riparian Habitat Management Society) – who will complete three ‘Riparian Health Inventories’ (RHI) over the course of the ďŹ ve-year project to collect comprehensive information about the structure and function of the vegetation, soil and hydrology within the project area. “We need to ensure that what we are doing is sustainable,â€? said Michalak. “We spent the ďŹ rst year of the project observing, taking soil samples, water analysis, looking at the creek itself and what kind of plants were already present on the site. “We need to know that whatever changes we make to this land are going to be

was the City of Red Deer itself following a 2010 spill which released 160 litres of Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) at an electrical substation along the Red Deer River.

The contaminated oil came from a metal drum at the substation according to a Jan. 14th, 2013 news release from Environment Canada.

The City pled guilty to one count under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and as a result was ďŹ ned $50,000 as well as ordered to create policies to ensure proper care for PCBs, create a training program for staff who handle PCBs, and introduce internal auditing to prevent future spills. Funding from the EDF is given to projects hoping to restore the natural environment and conserve wildlife in the

geographic region where the original incident occurred, making the Piper Creek Restoration Project an ideal candidate.

The Piper Creek Restoration Project’s planting beds are also home to a unique pollinator hotel, the ďŹ rst of its kind in the City.

The pollinator hotel is a habitat structure made of natural and recycled material, which aims to provide nesting spaces for indigenous bees. With pollinator health being a concern worldwide the City opted to help address this issue on a local level with a $3,000 grant also coming from the Alberta Conservation Association in order to make the hotel possible.

Hardships faced during the summer of 1915 As the summer of 2015 draws to a close, almost everyone will be reflecting back over the past few months and reminiscing about the kind of summer they have had. It is also interesting to look back 100 years and see what the summer of 1915 was like.

One of the biggest events of the summer of 1915 was the province-wide vote on Prohibition. This measure was one of the most momentous pieces of social legislation ever attempted in North America. Prohibition had been the goal of temperance and social reform groups for at least two generations. Now it was to become a reality in Alberta.

The outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 had provided a major boost to the temperance movement. With young men sacrificing so much to serve King and Country overseas, people felt that they should make sacrifices at home as well. Refraining from the consumption of alcohol seemed one way to do that.

Support for Prohibition in the provincial plebiscite was decisive across almost all of Alberta.

Nearly two-thirds of Albertans voted for the measure. In Red Deer and across Central Alberta, support was even more massive.

The ‘Dry’ vote exceeded 80%.

DAWE Despite this very strong endorsement by the electorate, implementing such a far-reaching measure to change and control human behavior was complicated. Hence, the legal implementation of Prohibition was delayed until July 1st, 1916.

Meanwhile, the Great War overseas raged on. The Second Battle of Ypres was devastating. Canadians entered that terrible struggle in Flanders in the spring of 1915, shortly before the Germans used poison gas for the first time as a weapon of mass destruction.

The first victims were largely French soldiers in the Territorial, Moroccan and Algerian units.

The men had never faced poison gas before. Most of those who survived the initial attack fled for their lives.

The soldiers of the First Canadian Division, who were seeing active combat for the first time, were given the job of holding the line and closing the gap in the Allied defenses. They took the extreme emergency mea-

sure of using cloths drenched in urine to counter the effects of the gas. Nevertheless, the Canadians suffered a horrific casualty rate of 75% from the gas and the intense combat that followed.

Another cloud of chlorine gas was then released on the Canadians who were trying to defend the village of St. Julien. Despite horrific casualties, the Canadians once again managed to stop the expected German breakthrough.

Consequently, the Canadians earned a reputation of some of the very best frontline combat troops on the Western Front.

Like the rest of the country, Red Deer and Central Alberta were struck hard by the consequences of this unbelievably savage fighting.

The local newspapers were soon filled with the names of the dead and wounded. Of the 11 men who had enlisted in the summer of 1914 from the Pine Lake district southeast of Red Deer, half were reported as being killed.

In early August, services of commemoration were held on the first anniversary of the outbreak of the War. However, unlike the great patriotic glee which had greeted the word of War in 1914, now there was great sadness at the public gatherings. People

were proud of what the Canadians had accomplished in their first major battles. That was now heavily tempered by the realization of the terrible costs which came with those victories.

Still, day-to-day life went on.

The usual summer events were held. The annual Sylvan Lake regatta on July 28th was a huge success with more than 700 people, more than twice the population

However, attendance at the annual Red Deer Fair, from Aug. 17th to 19th, was noticeably down.

Nevertheless, this reduced attendance was still better than what the Fair Board had feared. Most importantly, the exhibition and accompanying horse races made a tidy profit, no small feat in the increasingly cash-strapped wartime economy.

Kindness campaign in Red Deer this week

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Toby the spokes-pup and his Million Acts of Kindness Tour, which marks September’s back to school and October’s National Bully Prevention Month, is stopping in Red Deer tomorrow for several different community events.

The campaign is spreading its message by wagging tails across North America to inspire schools, workplaces, communities and individuals with messages of kindness, workplace respect and community resilience, said Charmaine Hammond, Team Toby founder and professional speaker and author.

“We will be coming to Red Deer in the Kindness-mobile. We’re going to be having some contests like spot the Kindness-mobile to win,” said Hammond.

She added a family outdoor movie night will also take place at Bower Ponds on the evening of Sept. 3rd and residents are encouraged to participate. The event begins

at 6 p.m. with the park clean up and the movie at 8 p.m.

“The event will be for families – furrylegged included,” said Hammond. “Prior to the movie starting, we are going to a park clean up as part of our acts of kindness. After the movie, we will do a 30-minute park clean up so that we can leave it cleaner than when we arrived.”

With statistics showing one in three teens have admitted to recent bullying, and 30% of employees reporting workplace bullying and harassment, the tour’s lovable spokes-pup ‘Toby’ the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and Toby’s side-kick, Hammond, are set to reach over 10,000 employees, 25,000 students, engage 100 communities across North America, and cover more than 10,000 miles in the process.

“This tour is our mission to build a kinder world - one paw, one person at a time.

We have seen firsthand how Toby’s story and message, and his presence in school presentations, has provided a powerful and memorable learning experience for

students. Dogs are great examples of what unconditional acceptance looks like, and how kindness to animals in fact encourages kindness to people,” said Hammond.

The tour was inspired by Hammond and Toby’s 2015 PAWS Across Canada tour which covered four provinces and reached more than seven million through media, traveled 15,000 km, visited 60 communities, impacted more than 3,000 students through presentations, provided 60 schools and 18 libraries with Toby’s books and kindness curriculum and was supported by 30 partners. Now Hammond and Toby prepare to set out on an adventure of kindness.

This six-week road trip in an RV is then followed by a three-month virtual tour, visiting communities through Skype presentations, webinars, live-streamed events and a media tour. Each of Team Toby’s favourite attractions and stops along the tour will awarded the ‘Toby Tested Toby Approved award’.

Toby will capture all these adventures on his very own GoPro pup-cam, to be used

in the official Million Acts of Kindness tour DOGumentary. An original Team Toby PAWSitive Radio web cast airs live daily from stops along the way. Hammond and Toby will also be making stops to participate in acts of kindness along the way.

Throughout the tour, Hammond and Toby will present workshops in workplaces, schools and classrooms, and community events and donate Team Toby anti-bullying and kindness books for curriculum use. Team Toby will also be raising money for school programs, shelters and animal rescue operations in communities they visit, with the support of local businesses.

“We will be visiting local schools in the Kindness-mobile and dropping off some of Toby’s kindness books and curriculum.

We will be surprising some of the schools,” said Hammond. “We are excited about this tour, and the range of activities that will be happening in the communities we visit.”

WATERSHED ALLIANCE TO HOST WORKSHOPS

Volunteer Central has announced that Tammy Oliver-McCurdie has joined the organization as executive director.

“On behalf of the Volunteer Central board of directors, I’m thrilled to welcome Tammy to our organization,” said Jennifer Blair, board chair. “Her wealth of knowledge and proven leadership will be instrumental in helping Volunteer Central fulfill its mandate to promote and encourage volunteerism across Central Alberta.”

Along with nearly 10 years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector, she brings extensive fund development, strategic planning, human resources, and financial management experience to the role — skills that are critical to ensuring Volunteer Central remains a sustainable organization, said Blair.

Volunteer Central promotes and encourages volunteerism in Red Deer and beyond by connecting volunteers, non-profit organizations and businesses.

More than 60 projects in communities across the province will receive almost $1.5 million in funding through the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program.

This includes a grant of $36,500 to support the replacement of the cedar shingles on the roof of old Red Deer Armoury (now the downtown children’s department of the Red Deer Public Library).

The two-and-a-half storey building in the Edwardian Free Style was built as an armoury in 1913 and used as a recruiting centre for both the First and Second World Wars. The building served as Red Deer’s Fire Hall No. 1 from 1961 to 1992 as well.

“By documenting and recording the history of our communities and through the conservation local historic places, Albertans are bringing the story of Alberta’s past to life.

“Their efforts are helping to create new opportunities while strengthening pride in our communities and our province,” said David Eggen, minister of culture and tourism.

A recent report by the World Wildlife Foundation rated current water quality in the Red Deer River Watershed as ‘good’ yet also ranked future threats to water quality in the watershed as ‘very high’. Despite a strong history of stewardship within the watershed, as population grows and development increases in the region, even maintaining surface water and groundwater quality will be a challenge.

There is an opportunity for community members to come together and address shared water quality challenges. As part of the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance’s (RDRWA) efforts to develop an Integrated Watershed Management Plan, the RDRWA will be hosting two workshops focused on water quality in mid-September. Dubbed Ripples in our Watershed: From Plan to Action, these workshops are an opportunity for anyone who lives, works, and plays in the Red Deer River watershed to contribute to a future of healthy water.

The Alliance will also share a draft of an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for public input. The plan will be a decision-support tool for people across the watershed to use as they work to maintain and improve water quality conditions.

Local MADD chapter seeks more volunteer support

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express The local chapter of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is calling on the community for further support in terms of volunteer help.

Currently, there just aren’t enough volunteers onboard to help promote and plan various events and activities throughout the year.

There are lots of ways people can help out as well, said Joan McIntyre, co-president of the local chapter of MADD, which was formed in 1993. “We need people to sit on our executive board, we need people to be victim advocates, we need people to do public awareness, and to train people to do court monitoring.

“There are different things volunteers can do – and we are struggling right now,” she said. “The more, the better.

Just like any not-for-profit organization, it’s run by volunteers.

“We usually have volunteers that are trained to deal with people who phone in and have been affected by an impaired driving crash,” she added. “So we have volunteers who are trained through MADD Canada so that when people phone in and they are reaching out for some help, we can give them that help.”

With groups in more than 100 communities across the country, MADD Canada works to offer grief and bereavement support, support through the criminal justice system, assistance with victim impact statements, help with understanding victims’ rights, a lending library, brochures, community referrals and trained victim service volunteers.

There are a number of events that run year-round that rely on volunteer planning and execution, such as presentations, fundraising events and awareness activities as well.

Another way volunteers could really lend a hand on the local front would be during the Project Red Ribbon Campaign, a major and annual awareness event which runs from mid-November through to the beginning of January.

During that time, MADD Canada chapters, volunteers

and community leaders distribute millions of red ribbons for Canadians to tie on their vehicles, key chains, purses, briefcases and backpacks.

According to the MADD Canada web site, “The red ribbon is a small but powerful symbol of the wearers’ commitment to sober driving, and reminds us all that the deaths and injuries resulting from impairment-related crashes are needless and preventable.

“Project Red Ribbon also targets the Christmas and New Year holiday season because it is the busiest time of year on most social calendars.” With lots of holiday parties and events on the go, the risk for impaired driving is

Officials say it’s a good reminder to never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, to plan ahead if you’re going to be drinking and to take a cab or bus, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over. Also, the Red Ribbon Campaign is a reminder to call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired.

As for McIntyre, working with MADD has provided her with a fulfilling means of serving the community. “I’ve been involved with MADD for about 18 years and I started as a concerned citizen,” she said, recalling she had spotted an article in the paper at the time that stressed the need for volunteers. “It’s something I really believe in. There is no reason to have impaired drivers on the road. It’s simple – if you drink, you don’t drive.”

Of course, more awareness and education is essential but there is still clearly a long ways to go in terms of affecting some people’s behaviour with alcohol. “It’s still a battle – I can’t believe that some people will drink and drive,” she said.

hear of people getting killed, and you hear of injuries – but people still do it,” she said, adding that stiffer penalties and having judges impose the maximum penalties possible would likely help as a deterrent.

“And it’s often repeat offenders, too.”

According to MADD Canada, on average, four Canadians are killed and 175 are injured every day in Canada by impaired drivers annually. Young people are at particular risk.

Approximately 45% of youth crash deaths are alcoholrelated, and statistics indicate that one in every three people who dies in an alcohol-related crash is under the age of 25.

As the web site also points out, “Despite federal and provincial/territorial laws and penalties, police enforcement and awareness efforts and despite the obvious risk of crash, death and injury, Canadians are still getting behind the wheel impaired. The estimated number of impaired driving trips taken in Canada each year is 12.5 million.”

People are also killed on boats, ATVs and snowmobiles because the operators and/or riders are impaired.

Meanwhile, looking ahead this fall, the annual Candlelight Vigil runs in November, and is a powerful time for friends and family to gather and honour the memory of loved ones lost because of impaired drivers.

Agencies observe International Overdose Awareness Day

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Members of the community gathered alongside staff of the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society (CAANS) and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) on Monday in support of International Overdose Awareness Day. The global event is held annually to raise awareness around accidental drugrelated overdoses and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths while acknowledging the effects an overdose related death of a loved one can have on family, friends and communities.

During the local event staff from CAANS and the CMHA heard from around 14 individuals during a ‘sharing circle’ about their personal stories surrounding overdoses, including those who overdosed

themselves and survived or those who lost loved ones due to an accidental drug-related overdose.

“One of the reoccurring themes among the sharing circle today was the lack of common knowledge around the fact that if you stop taking drugs for a period time, your tolerance will become lower,” explained Jennifer Vanderschaeghe, executive director of CAANS. “When people then begin taking drugs again they will take what they’ve always taken and we will see higher rates of overdose.”

“We encourage people to never use alone and to know their limits.”

In the first six months of 2015 the Alberta Health Services Central Zone saw 19 overdose deaths related to Fentanyl, a drug 80 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 40 to 50 times more potent than pharmaceutical grade heroin. Of those deaths,

10 were in Red Deer.

In a means to address the rising Fentanyl-related overdose deaths across the province, Alberta Health Services, in collaboration with the Alberta Community Council on HIV, funded a take home Naloxone kit program.

Naloxone is a drug that can reverse overdose from Fentanyl and other opiates if administered right away via a syringe into muscle.

The overdose prevention drug acts as a rapid blockade of opiate brain receptors in the central nervous system, allowing the individual overdosing more time to make it to an emergency care facility. In order to receive a prescription for Naloxone, opiate users must visit the Street Clinic before receiving take home kits.

Since CAANS began administering the take home Naloxone to opiate users in Red

Deer in early July, 48 kits have been handed out with a total of nine kits being used to prevent users from overdosing.

“We did hear from the one person today who used her kit over the weekend,” said Denelle Williams, registered nurse for the Women’s Program at CAANS who assists in training people to use their Naloxone kits.

“Her friend who was with her today was there when she overdosed and was blown away - it made her realize she also likely needed a kit.”

Vanderschaege added the fact they have seen the recorded use of eights kits thus far in Red Deer means there are potentially eight lives saved from accidental drug overdoses.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP ARREST MAN IN STOLEN TRUCK Red Deer RCMP arrested a man in a stolen truck this past Saturday, after the suspect drove through the Oriole Park neighbourhood at dangerous speeds, crashed into a power pole, then attempted to flee police on foot.

RCMP first located the man driving a stolen truck in the Riverside Meadows neighbourhood at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Aug. 29th.

The truck, which had been reported stolen out of Airdrie earlier the same day, did not stop for police but fled northbound on Taylor Drive and entered the Oriole Park neighbourhood.

Police did not pursue the vehicle due to public safety concerns, but continued to monitor its movements and

moved ahead to intercept it with a tire deflation device.

As the stolen truck attempted to avoid the device, it struck a light pole at the intersection of Overdown Drive and Olsen Street. The truck drove away and the driver abandoned it a short time later on Onslow Square, fleeing on foot. RCMP contained the area and located him on Kerry Wood Drive where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Dustin Eugene Weiss, 22, of Red Deer has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, operate motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, fail to remain at scene, fail to comply with undertaking and fail to comply with probation order.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in Alberta Provincial Court in Red

Deer on Sept. 8th.

ARRESTS MADE AFTER CHASE Red Deer RCMP arrested a man and woman this past Saturday after they attempted to evade police in a stolen truck, first by speeding through a residential neighbourhood, then by abandoning the truck and jumping into the Red Deer River.

The incident began at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 29th when RCMP located a man driving a stolen truck in the area of Welton Crescent in the West Park neighbourhood.

The truck, which had been stolen from a Kentwood residence on Aug. 28th, refused to stop when police activated their emergency equipment, and sped through a playground zone on 57 Ave. Police did not pursue the truck due to public safety

concerns, but quickly located the abandoned truck in the Cronquist Business Park parked off the road near the river.

As the male driver and female passenger ran to the river and attempted to swim away, RCMP and Police Dog Services contained both sides of the river and the area under the Taylor Drive bridge.

The female suspect was taken into custody as she exited the river, but the male suspect stayed in the river until the City of Red Deer Emergency Services dispatched a rescue boat with police on board to pick him up. The man was treated at the hospital after being in the cold water for a prolonged period of time, and was then released into police custody.

Both were wanted on outstanding warrants; RCMP will release an update once the charges are sworn before the courts.

ing for public assistance to identify a number of men who robbed and assaulted a man in the Normandeau neighbourhood on Aug. 22nd. At about 5 p.m. on Aug. 22nd, a 25-year-old Red Deer man was walking in the area of Nordegg Crescent and Nolan Street when he was attacked from behind. The unknown assailants kicked and punched the victim repeatedly before taking his cell phone and a small amount of cash.

The victim was treated for numerous injuries to his face.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDERS Red Deer RCMP would like to remind drivers, parents and students of a few important tips to make the return to school safe and successful

for everyone.

All school zones in Red Deer are again in effect. The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/hr and is in effect from 8 to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. on school days.

The fine for going 50 km/hr in a school zone is $167 and that fine amount increases as the speed increases.

While school buses within the City do not use a flashing light system, RCMP urge drivers to slow down and use caution when passing a stopped bus.

Students are reminded to only cross the street at marked crosswalks and intersections and to always be alert for danger. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic, staying as far away from the vehicles as possible.

Never run after the school bus to try to catch up. And remember, if you can’t see the driver, the driver can’t see you either. If you bike, roller blade or skateboard to school, don’t forget your safety gear.

Red Deer Scouts back from Japan World Jamboree

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Scouts Canada Venture members have recently returned from a trip to Japan, where they partook in the Scouts World Jamboree and explored the region.

In addition to meeting hundreds of Scouts from across the world, the group decided to stay a little longer and explore some of Japan’s wonders.

“JAPAN IS VERY DIFFERENT AND I LIKED IT A LOT, BUT I THINK WHAT I LEARNED IS TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND WHEN YOU’RE TRYING NEW THINGS.” EVAN SCHOLLIE “It was very good. I liked it a lot. What we did was spend four days in Hong Kong with all the Canadians, and then we went to the Jamboree for 10 days. Then my group spent a week touring around Japan – we even climbed Mount Fuji,” said Evan Schollie, 17.

“It was very cool going to the Jamboree because they put you into a group with people from the other countries so I was able to meet some scouts from Norway and the United Kingdom, and it was very interesting to learn about their countries and what they do.”

Schollie was one of over 350 Canadian Scouts and Venturers to attend the World Jamboree, and one of nine from Red Deer.

He is currently in his last year of scouting and said he would miss the experiences that come as part of the group.

The group of participants from Red Deer toured

around Japan and were able to partake in a variety of interesting activities.

“We had lots of free time, but went off site a couple times.

“We went to the Hiroshima Memorial, and to some limestone caves nearby.

“We had lots of activities where we learned about the different cultures through the cultural centre that was set up there,” Schollie said.

“I think my favourite part was climbing Mount Fuji. It takes two days to climb, so we spent a night in the mid-mountain hut and then got up early the next day to climb and see the sunrise. It was very nice and I liked it a lot.”

Jocelyn Mosset, 15, also took part in the trip and said she very much enjoyed getting a chance to explore other cultures.

“I had such a blast just getting to see the different cultures. It was very ‘wow’ – lots of culture shock. We went to Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial.

“That was interesting and very shocking. We went into the caves in Japan, as well,” Mosset said of some of her favourite experiences.

The World Jamboree events happen every four years, and bring together more than 30,000 scouts from across the world to experience each other’s cultures. This year marked the 23rd World Jamboree.

“I’d say the biggest thing for me about this jamboree was the culture shock – I’ve never been anywhere before, and this was my first trip.

“Japanese people were very kind and polite.

“They were constantly making sure we had everything we needed and that everything was okay,” Mos-

In order to attend the event, participants worked to fundraise for two years.

“We had to do a lot of bottle drives, and doing ticket sales as well for paintings.

We had somebody paint replicas of photos we’d taken, so we sold tickets for those and did raffles,” explained Mosset.

Both Schollie and Mosset said they enjoyed the cul-

ture and new experiences that came from attending the World Jamboree.

“Japan is very different and I liked it a lot, but I think what I learned is to keep an open mind when

ENTERTAINMENT Paul Brandt brings co-headlining tour to Red Deer

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Alberta-born country star Paul Brandt is bringing his co-headlining tour to Red Deer this fall.

Brandt is teaming up with country singer Dean Brody for the Road Trip Tour, which will make stops in 22 cities across the country beginning Sept. 24th. The duo plays the Centrium on Oct. 6th.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s kind of a once in a lifetime thing. We have never done a co-headlining tour before and to get to go and do this with Dean is really exciting. I think he is a great artist and we’ve had a lot of fun getting to know each other already in the promotions,” said Brandt.

“I think we are going to have a blast out there.”

Brandt added there is nothing like being on the road.

“The road is just a lot of fun. We get comments from people backstage or get a chance to chat with people in autograph lines – the comment that we get almost all the time is, ‘Boy, you guys look like you have a lot of fun out there.’

“For me, that’s very rewarding but it’s also pretty easy. I just go out and do what I love to do. When you get on the road and you feel the hum of the tires and you’re hitting a different city every single night, there is just an adrenaline rush that comes with that. It’s a lot of fun.”

He added another highlight of being on tour is getting to play for a different audience every night.

“Every audience in my experience has a bit of a different personality,” said Brandt.

“You take the time to listen and to observe and what is moving them and what they are enjoying. There is almost a little subtlety in each town and it ends up almost like a conversation.”

Brandt recalls when he was just getting started in his music career, before he had a record deal, he took a trip to Nashville with his dad. They ate at the BlueBird Café.

“People knew about the BlueBird but there was still something that was not shiny about it. It was very real feeling.

This lady got up on stage – a songwriter I had never seen before or since – and she just communicated to us through her music,” he said. “It was such an amazing feeling and a transcendent feeling for me. It

really impacted me and it made me look at songwriting and performing in a very different way.”

Growing up, Brandt said he was told that his great grandfather, who he had never met, was an opera singer in Russia and traveled around singing and opening up for some of the bigger names at the time.

“I’ll never forget the first time I sang in front of my grandfather – he just started to weep. He said that I had the same voice as his dad,” he said. “That was a real moment for me.”

A passion for music came early for Brandt starting at six-years-old where he sang at his church in Calgary.

“I got a guitar at age 13 and I was writing poetry, so I put the two together and they sounded like songs,” he said. “I just kept going. I was sort of obsessed with it. It was something that I loved to do and my family was so supportive.”

Shortly after, Brandt began entering talent contests, one of which was at the Calgary Stampede.

After three years of entering that particular contest, he won. “I won it singing Garth Brooks tunes and got a prize to go record some music in a studio. One of those songs ended up making its way to Nashville and that is when the fateful call came. I got a call from the label and they asked if they could come and see my band play, and I called them right back and said sure. I called my friend right away and said, ‘Dude, you have to help me put a band together’,” he added with a laugh. “I love it and I never take it for granted because a lot of people never get that shot. But it happened in an unusual way.”

As for inspiration for new material, Brandt said it comes from daily life.

“I’ve heard from people that the best approach in songwriting is just to be a great observer of life. That is what I try and do,” he said. “I’m always filtering and jotting down ideas or singing into my phone to remember stuff.”

As for what keeps Brandt going – he said it is his love of music.

“I told myself early on that I was only going to do this as long as it was fun, and it never stopped. There are always challenges to anything that is worth anything.

“There is always stuff that you have to overcome,” he said. “I absolutely love what I get to do. There are days where you are

Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra in City Sept. 9th

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express On the heels of a new release, the Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra performs at Fratters Sept. 9th.

The group is a collection of musicians, linked by what are described as “common sonic journeys and familial ties.”

After the release of Love last month, the band embarked on a 25-date western Canadian tour. What makes The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra’s nine new songs unique is that they collect differing experiences into one harmonized narrative, teasing apart the layers and revealing how hard good people work to be good to each other, said singer/guitarist Kurt Loewen.

It’s an album that speaks to the consequences of love in its many forms, seeing it as both sugar and lemons, suggesting that to have one without the other would make the recipe incomplete, he said.

“The creation of Love was a family affair, which is a feeling our group has always embraced,” he said.

“Our dear friends not only provided the space for the making of the record, designed the set for the front cover and had a hand in the naming of the album but Emily, my wife, produced it and was the graphic designer.”

Rounding out the band are Ian Griffiths (vocals/ a c c o rd i o n / ke ys / s h r u t i box), Paul Wolda (percussion/vocals), Mack Shiels

TMO have spent years weaving their stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from their wanderings.

Their beginnings stretch back to their years together at the University of Victoria. “We started playing music in and around the

Victoria music scene,” he recalled.

“We were a seven piece at the group’s inception and then after that first year we ended up as a five-piece for about five years.”

In about 2012, a couple guys left who were replaced, so they remain today a solid band of five who have continued to break new ground over the years – particularly seen in the new CD Love.

Loewen pointed out that the project is different from past ones. “This one, and the one before – Follow My Lead – are probably the two that we have sunk the most production time into,” he said.

As mentioned, Loewen’s wife produced the project and there were less outside engineers and other recording staff brought in along the way.

“This process was unique in that we did it all ourselves,” he said, adding the tracks were recording in a friend’s home studio on Quadra Island which added to the home-like, intimate feel of the project.

“My hope is that it would be a really organic, intensive and really immersive experience – which for us it really was.

“We really got down to business – and we were writing as we were recording which is unusual,” he added. “So we were doing a lot of the pre-production during the production which is really unusual, too. But I really liked the process, and all in all, I really feel like there’s a uniqueness to it in comparison to our previous offerings.

“It’s a lot different – a lot more introspective. A lot of the songs are really quite sad actually,” he adds with a chuckling. “There are a

lot of songs pretty much about the ending of relationships in all the capacities of your life.”

Still, regardless of the tone for the CD, performing it live – in the midst of their past hits – is going over extremely well.

“We are bringing the new record into our set and it’s cool. I’m really proud of the songs, but I was a bit tentative with how they were going to come across live.

Now that we’ve been playing them it’s been working well – it’s been really fun.”

And speaking of performing live, it’s really where the magic happens. Loewen loves how hitting the stage can bring a wealth of new ways to interpret the same song – time and again.

“When I listen back to some of our older songs, we don’t play some of those songs even remotely close to how we play them now. And I like the way we play them now even more because there can be better arrangements and better playing.

Maybe even smarter playing - we are older and maybe a little bit wiser too!”

For Loewen, his experiences in music began largely with years in formal piano training.

“I was in my early 20s by the time I realized I wanted to play with a hard working band and pay my rent with

it,” he recalled. “But I grew up with music, education and sports being heavily enforced into my household.

“So I played classical piano until I was about 12 and then I discovered the guitar, which I really loved.

And I found all of these really great rock bands from yesteryear which I love.”

His dad was also a pastor until Loewen was about 16, so there was plenty of singing in church to hone the vocal chords, too – including choir singing. “Church choirs, school choirs and community choirs were a big part of my life,” he recalled. “Even when I moved to Victoria, I joined a community choir and really learned to sing – it really opened up my voice.

“There was always a piano in our home and grandpa always played and the cousins would always sing.

It’s funny, because when you are a kid you don’t realize why your parents are showing you not just the love and the gift of music, but also encouraging you and pushing you in that direction. It’s so special – whether you are the one playing it or the one listening to it.

“Other than maybe being desperately in love with a person, nothing else can really touch that feeling.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Dieters have to beware when eating out It’s true that restaurants are making an effort to include healthier, low-calorie options on their menus these days, giving dieters more choices.

WHEELER But the high-calorie, high-fat dishes are still there to tempt you, sometimes disguised to appear healthy. Can you tell the difference? And are you able to spot the menu items that can easily wreck your dieting intentions for the day?

The small strides towards healthier menus are progress, but there’s still much room for improvement. If you need help distinguishing what’s good and bad for you on a restaurant menu, here are a few hints.

As you start your order, don’t forget about liquid calories.

Choosing soda, alcohol, or sweet tea may not be that big of a deal until you realize the waiter refilled your cup at least three times.

Be smart and choose a drink that won’t add extra, empty calories to your meal.

Water, unsweetened tea, and low-fat milk are your best options for beverages without added sugars. If you’re in the mood for an alcoholic beverage, check the calorie count. A single beer can range from 100 to more than 400 calories.

As you wait for your meal, you may consider ordering an appetizer to stave off the hunger. Is this a smart choice?

It can be if you choose a healthy option.

Eating a small appetizer can help you avoid binging on an oversized entree.

A fresh veggie salad with dressing on the side, a broth-based soup, fruit, steamed seafood or a few chips and salsa are dietfriendly appetizer options. Just say ‘no’ to the bread and butter, anything breaded or fried and cheese dips.

The main dish is usually the calorie trap.

Oversized portions, bottomless buffets and methods of food preparation can be the reasons behind your weight control problem in the first place, so beware of the dangers.

As you peruse a restaurant menu and make your selections, choose an entree

that includes vegetables. If possible, ask for a small or medium serving rather than a large.

The way your food is prepared makes a big difference in its calorie count. Order your meal grilled, steamed, baked, blackened, stewed, roasted, or broiled rather than sautéed, scalloped or fried.

Menu descriptions that include sauces, creams, gravies or that include foods that are battered, buttered or breaded are clear indications of high-calorie foods.

Some types of meat are lean, others are fatty. Pork is generally okay, except for bacon, ribs, and sausage. Fish gets two giant thumbs up.

The white meat of chicken, turkey, or

duck, without the skin, is also a healthy option. When it comes to beef, steaks and ribs are higher in fat, while ground round and roasts are leaner.

Salads can be a wise choice when eating out but can easily become loaded with calories if you pick the wrong toppings.

Avoid creamy dressings, croutons, cheese, fried onions and bacon and stick to fresh vegetables, nuts, beans, fruit and seeds.

Don’t let your dieting intentions go down the drain with poor side dish choices.

A plate full of French fries, a loaded baked potato, chips, or even coleslaw can quickly add on the calories. Your best bet for a healthy side dish are steamed or boiled vegetables without butter or cheese.

If you go with a baked potato, ask for it without toppings or toppings on the side.

Fruit can also be a great side dish option.

You’ve made it this far without compromising your diet, so watch out for the dessert menu.

Your healthy meal shouldn’t be an excuse to indulge in a dessert.

When others at your table order a dessert, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. The times you feel deprived or crave something sweet, order fruit, angel food cake, frozen yogurt or sorbet. An indulgence every now and then may just mean a longer treadmill workout the next day.

A pink pill for female sexual equality?

George Carlin, the American comedian, when referring to God, once remarked, “He, and if there is a God, I am convinced he is a he, because no woman could or would screw things up this badly.”

JONES I agree if more women were in charge, this world would be a safer planet. But a recent medical announcement about female sexuality makes me wonder if women should be careful of what they wish for, like the pink pill, Addyi (flibanserin). It’s just been approved in the U.S. but not yet in Canada.

We know the blue pill has had a major impact on male sexuality. It’s been 17 years since Viagra was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Since then 25 drugs have been approved to treat male sexual problems and zero for women. But before women went on the war path and demanded sexual equality, it would have been prudent to remember Maurice Chevalier’s

remark, ‘Vive la Difference!’.

Male ED was an easier problem to solve. It was simply a deficiency of blood flow. All researchers had to do was increase blood flow TO-YOU-KNOW-What and ‘Eureka’, the problem was solved.

So when women’s equal rights groups scream scientists ignore women’s issues, they forget that mechanical problems are one thing but the complex issues of female anatomy another. ‘La Difference’ creates a huge obstacle.

In 1999 a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association stated that 40% of U.S. women suffered from some type of sexual dysfunction.

Now Sprout Pharmaceutical claims its pink pill can even the score and rescue women from this predicament. I’m sure they will use prime time TV to spread the merits of Addyi.

So why has it taken so long for approval? FDA officials claim that the drug does not have ‘very robust effectiveness.’

For instance, women reported only one extra sexually satisfying event a month.

In addition, there are side-effects such as nausea, dizziness, insomnia, drug interactions and combining the pill with alcohol can cause a dangerous drop in

blood pressure.

At this point feminists might justifiably counter, “What about the side-effects of Viagra such as visual changes, sudden loss of vision, nausea, sweating, irregular heart rate, chest pain, shortness of breath and swelling of YOUKNOW-WHAT if it lasts more than four hours? So how come the FDA approved Viagra?”

Female criticism appears to be justifiable. But again, let’s not forget ‘Vive la Difference.’ The big difference is the pink pill is supposed to provide an increase in women’s libido, not by action on pelvic organs, but by changing brain activity.

Addyi was developed as an antidepressant but never approved.

Sprout now claims it involves three neurotransmitters, dopamine, noreprinephrine and serotonin, all of which affect sexual desire. But Barbara Mintzes, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, claims there is no evidence women with low sexual desire exhibit abnormal brain function.

If I were a woman I’d worry that a pill, developed as an antidepressant, is now to be used as a sexual stimulus. Moreover, Viagra is prescribed when partners desire sex. The pink pill is to be

used every day. Good sense tells me altering brain function day after day is a questionable move.

So I believe history will show women may get more than they expected with this issue. And

that Aristotle was right when he wrote, “The worst form of inequality is the attempt to make unequal things equal.”

Dressing - make the dressing in a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, mustard, honey and a few twists of pepper. Set the dressing aside.

Toast the almonds and make the salad! Combine the spinach, strawberries, quinoa and almonds. Crumble the goat cheese over the salad. Drizzle in just enough dressing to lightly coat the spinach.

Cook the quinoa: in a small saucepan, combine the quinoa and water. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to a simmer.

SPORTS Rebels wind up annual training camp

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express It has been 14 years since the Red Deer Rebels last hoisted the MasterCard Memorial Cup high above their heads.

The year was 2001 and the Red Deer WHL team had just defeated the QJHL league champions, the Val-d’Or Foreurs in 6-5 overtime battle at the 2011 Memorial Cup held in Regina.

The Rebels will once again have their chance for a championship title as they host the 2016 Memorial Cup. With the hosting, the Rebels will become the first Alberta team to take on the event since Calgary Hitmen did so in 1974.

While May is still many months away, the local team’s headquarters at the Enmax Centrium has already been shined and spiffed in preparation for the event with new boards, glass and benches being added to the complex.

The Centrium wasn’t the only thing to see change over the summer months, as head coach and general manager for the Rebels, Brent Sutter explained his team has come back in tip top physical shape this August.

“They’ve been much better with their conditioning and it’s something we continue to push throughout the summer so that players can come back in better shape than they were when they stepped off the ice last spring,” said Sutter. “We are a team that takes a lot of pride in making sure our athletes are well-conditioned – we really stress the importance of proper nutrition and eating right.

Over the past weekend, Sutter gathered his team under the bright new lights of the Centrium for the team’s annual training camp.

The camp itinerary saw returning, newly-signed and prospective Rebels skating together in practices, pro skates, scrimmages and on Sept. 2nd, the annual Black & White Game takes place.

While Sutter is excited to see how his new younger players do in the preseason he is apprehensive to see many of his starters not on the bench for these first five games as eight of his players will be attending pro camps across North America.

Local boxing club hosts grand opening

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express After opening their doors only six short months ago the Red Deer & District Boxing Club has experienced a growing rate of membership.

This past Saturday, the Club hosted an official grand opening in which they saw around 150 Club members, members of the community and professional boxers alike come by to view the new facility.

With the grand opening of the Red Deer and District Boxing Club, the City now boasts two top-notch boxing facilities alongside the long-standing Red Deer Boxing Club.

During Saturday’s grand opening, 25 youth members who had never boxed prior to joining the Club had the chance to take part in their first ever boxing match, as the card for the evening saw 13 bouts for visitors to admire.

“The bouts on Saturday helped kids who have never had a real match before to prepare for their first match,” explained head coach Dennis Ejack. “They were in a real boxing ring with the crowd cheering and a referee in there with them.

“When kids go to their first boxing match they can feel really intimidated because they have never been in a large scale ring before – so this was a great experience to get them ready for our upcoming season.”

Also in attendance at the event was Canadian wel-

terweight champion Steve ‘The Dragon’ Claggett of Calgary as well as Stuart McLellan out of Williams Lake, B.C. where they officially announced their Sept. 18th national title bout.

The pair was onhand at the grand opening to not only announce their title fight being held at Calgary’s Deerfoot Inn Casino, but were also signing autographs and taking photos with members of the Club.

Ejack, who recently retired from a position as vice president of Boxing Alberta, has been involved in the boxing industry since the late 80s when his son began training at the age of eight.

While he never expected to one day be running his own club during those early years, he said the desire to start his own came from his and fellow coaches’ love of boxing.

“We wanted our Club to be affordable and a place where kids from any background can learn to box and especially for lowincome families with kids - we want to make sure everyone is included,” said Ejack, adding other sports like hockey and soccer can be extremely expensive.

He explained the new Club also has sponsorship programs for low-income families to alleviate the costs so that, “No child gets left behind.”

Currently the Club hosts a membership of 40, with participants ranging in age from five to 55.

record checks and minimum level 1 coaching certification. Ejack explained the Club has no paid employees, only volunteers with a love for boxing.

He added the necessity for criminal record checks came from the Club wanting to ensure parents had a guaranteed safe environment to leave their kids in.

He explained good coaching is what gets the kids to where they are.

“When someone comes to our gym they are going to be working with a variety of different coaches every night,” he said. “There’s always a minimum of three coaches at the gym every night – they’re there for boxers to ask questions like, How is my footwork?, Am I hitting the bag as best

I can? or Am I keeping my hands up?”

While some clubs will say you need to work on two things to be a good boxer – power and speed, Ejack said the Red Deer & District Boxing Club goes further in depth.

“We go beyond that and we teach not only power and speed, but also focus so they are focused in the ring, commitment so they want to become better at the sport at their own rate, and the fifth thing is stamina/cardio.

“We start off like building a house – the foundation is a boxer’s footwork and work our way up to the stance and various other aspects,” he said.

“The foundation to any good boxer is their foot-

work, I always tell the kids you wouldn’t build a million dollar house on a $2,000 foundation.”

He added coaching is the only way kids will ever be able to develop their own unique styles of boxing.

“Pacquiao doesn’t fight like Mayweather – so that’s what we are looking for is these kids to get into a comfort zone where they can decided if they want to be a counter puncher or a lead off puncher and that will take them a long way.”

Making sure your home is ready for autumn The past few dreary hazy days have made me realize what is ahead after summer breathes its last breath and I’m very sad to see it come to an end!

There is nothing like long lazy summer days where you go with the flow and let the sun warm you as it travels across the sky.

Inside projects are put aside because we don’t want to let one day go to waste and that to-do list will always be waiting for you when the weather turns colder.

The flower beds need to be pruned and the fall fertilizer needs to be put on the lawn as we prepare for a quiet winter sleep. Your home should be looked after in similar ways as we brush off summer and get ready for fall.

Window tracks and screens should be washed and wiped to remove dust and debris from summer storms (we have had quite a few!)

This is a good time to change your furnace filter and have your ducts cleaned before that first cold spell has you rushing to turn up the heat.

Maintenance now will help you avoid a furnace that may not work when you need it to so a call to your trusted furnace guy is prudent and you can beat the rush of other unprepared homeowners.

Elements in your furnace can become dusty and it is a good idea to give it a little

maintenance in preparation.

Nobody likes that first firing of the furnace when the whole house smells like burnt dust for the first little while.

While it is still warm, pull apart your dryer vent hose and give all those parts and pieces a good vacuuming. Make sure the hose to the outside is secure and has no space for little critters to invade, when the weather starts chilling out, the mice and spiders will look for any chance to get into your home.

I am scheduled for my yearly maintenance on my washer and dryer this fall and it is a good reminder for me to make sure all things are in good working order as the option to dry things outside is soon going to not be an option!

Shake out the scatter rugs and the curtains.

Put your entry mats outside and give them a quick hose down after spritzing

them with a light cleaner. I use thieves cleaner in a spray bottle as it deodorizes without a great deal of suds. A coat of cleaner and then a quick blast of water helps to get rid of the debris from the summer and deodorizes the mats to give you a fresh entry into fall.

It is much easier to do this now on a warm sidewalk then to try and accomplish this indoors.

Of course many of these tasks are no fun and can be better accomplished by a professional cleaning service while you sip your last few mojitos on a patio with friends.

Either way you will have a fresh start to your fall and your home will welcome you back indoors with open arms. Nothing makes us appreciate our homes like a chilly fall day.

Is it tougher to get a mortgage these days?

If it seems like it is harder to get a mortgage that’s only because it is.

Scallywags and scoundrels have committed fraud on a massive scale and so the lenders all have to ask for a pile of paperwork to prevent fraud.

The government is looking to make sure that we don’t get in over our heads and so they have implemented changes to all things mortgage. And finally, the whole dang global economy seems unable to get its bearings so everyone has to be even more diligent about everything so that don’t get stuck with a pile of foreclosures.

Now that you know the reasons, let’s take a look at just how you may be affected personally.

Paperwork - the sad truth of the matter is this. Mortgage fraud happens all the time. People present false letters of employment, bank statements and all matter of things. You should know that lenders check companies online, cross check documents, assess viability of income and call employers. Here are the most common documents a lender is looking for: • Letter of Employment on company letterhead. It will outline the basics of your employment including income, if you are

PIKKERT on probation, how long you have been with them and a contact person to verify the whole thing.

• Recent paystub where the numbers match what the letter says.

• Notice of Assessment for the last two years from the CRA to confirm income sustainability and that you do not owe any taxes.

• If you are self-employed or own rental properties –Last two year’s complete T1 Generals (accountant prepared is best) and likely your business financials as well.

• Ninety day history on all accounts making up any part of the down payment. This is not us trying to be intrusive, it is actually part of the anti-terrorism initiative to make sure all funds are legally sourced. I swear we do not care how much you spend at Starbucks.

They will ask for your property tax bill, mortgage statement, T4s, lease agreements

and anything else they need to ensure they have met all of the documentation requirements of their investors and the mortgage insurers.

Affordability ratios - there have been some government imposed changes over the last few years as to how we have to calculate things. Let’s look at the ones which will likely affect you the most.

• 3% rule – If you have a line of credit with a balance of $20,000 you are likely only required to repay 1% or $200 a month. That is not the way of the mortgage universe. In our world, we are required to use a payment of 3% of the balance of all lines of credit and credit cards when qualifying a mortgage. The same $20,000 now has a minimum payment of $600 a month which can greatly decrease your overall affordability.

• Maximum amortization – if you have less than 20% to put down, your maximum amortization just became 25 years. If you have more, you can still opt for a 30- or 35year amortization.

• 80% refinance – you are only able to refinance your home to 80% of its appraised value.

• Allowable income – not all income is created equal. A non-taxable truck allow-

ance, tips, cash under the table will not be used to help you qualify. Lenders want a two-year average if you are commissioned, receive hefty bonuses, or self-employed.

If you are trying to avoid taxes by claiming little income then you may be in for a shock come mortgage time. The lenders need to see you can afford the home you are asking for. And I will tell you that anyone in the oilfield and its related industries are being scrutinized very carefully as far as income sustainability.

• Qualifying rate – if you are choosing any term but a five-year fixed, then you have to qualify for the mortgage based on the bank of Canada posted rate. This is to ensure you can survive a rate increase when your mortgage is up for renewal.

So now you know that getting a mortgage is considerably much harder than it used to be. Please don’t take this personally! The truth of the matter is that if I were lending someone $300,000 to purchase a home I will be honest and say I sure as heck would want to make sure I was going to be paid back.
