My city-centre is full of life; let’s keep it alive!
My city-centre is so beautiful, with its town hall, big library, charming churches, little parks, and attractive shops! There is a lot of life in my downtown: the small cafés that open their friendly terraces, the bookstore that features the most recent best-sellers and offers original stationery items, the expert who shares her passion and knowledge of photography…the art gallery, the corner store, the hardware store, the health food store. My city-centre is full of life; let’s keep it alive! Whether I am looking for a specific item or just enjoying a pleasant walk with a friend on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the business centre in my area offers me a lot more than attractive store windows. Like me, the other pedestrians who are attracted by the relaxing and cheerful atmosphere of our city-centre will find everything they want or need. During our walks, we often run into friends and family who also came downtown to lift their spirits. A city-centre is a lively gathering place. Its life comes from the local merchants and their visitors. Our city-centre cannot survive without local businesses and our local purchases. We all love our city-centre and everyone wants to keep it alive. By shopping locally, by supporting our local merchants, and by showing our loyalty to our city-centre, we keep its heart pumping!

I work my local economy! My local economy needs to work! My neighbour needs to work, my cousin needs to work, and so does my best friend. By shopping in my town and in my community, I work my local economy. By becoming a “local” customer, I exploit my local economy. By shopping at home, I help create jobs in local businesses. I support my neighbourhood business owners. In the end, I benefit abundantly! It is a win-win situation, for me and everyone else. My purchases represent revenue for the merchants. The more I buy at home, the more my local merchants are able to offer stable employment. In turn, the employees have the necessary financial resources to work the local economy. A local economy that works well stays healthy and everybody benefits. I also spread the word to my friends and family. If, every week, I encourage one person to work the local economy, who, in turn, invites one other person to do the same, just imagine the contribution we can make to our region! An economically strong region always ends up reinvesting part of its profits into the community that works it. In addition to jobs, a strong economy also creates parks and children’s playgrounds, water fountains and landscaping along commercial streets, a flourishing community where it is pleasant to live. In fact, working can be fun!

Buy locally-grown seasonal produce Eating local produce is not only good for your health but it is also good for the environment and the local economy. They are harvested when fully-grown and at the peak of their flavour.
2-MORE NUTRITION Fruits and vegetables cultivated in greenhouses are not as rich in nutritional elements as those produced in the traditional way. During transportation, fruits and vegetables harvested prematurely are very sensitive to air and heat and thus lose some of their nutritional value. They start deteriorating the moment they are harvested... So you can imagine what state they are in after a long trip on a ship, plane or truck. By choosing to eat local fruits and vegetables we are building better, long-term health for ourselves and our families. 3-LESS POLLUTION The various forms of transportation used to import fruits and vegetables are responsible for the production of large amounts of greenhouse gases. The cost per kilo is proportionally higher as well as the environmental cost... Consumption of local produce also cuts down on the use of pesticides.
Over the last two generations, consumption of locally grown fruits and vegetables has greatly diminished. It’s time to reverse the trend!

Local delights for the fall As Canada hunkers down for the cooling weather, plenty of regional food producers will be selling their delicious autumn products at roadside stands, farmers markets, and grocery store chains. Local Food Plus, Canada’s local sustainable food system organization, asserts that 100,000 people are eating “certified local sustainable” food every day — that means they are eating food grown within their province and not trucked or flown in from faraway places. If you’d like to have your own local food experience, a drive to the country and a visit to a local producers’ market is a great idea for a crisp fall day. Wine, cheese, apples, cider, farm-fresh eggs, and locally raised natural meat can all be bought when one is in the know about where to find them. If you would like to plug in to the network of local producers in your area, the best place to go for information is to a local food producers’ association. Or, once on site, you could go to the local tourism office or
natural food store. These people will be able to tell you where to get the buttery, mild goat cheese you’ve been craving, or the season’s freshest pressing of apple cider. Ask, too, about butchers who work locally, as well as jam-makers, microbreweries, organic vegetable growers, and livestock farmers. If you can’t get to the country, take heart; more and more mainstream restaurants are beginning to feature menu items made from local products. The trendiest places make a splash of highlighting their dishes made with local cheeses, meats, wines, and fresh produce — they sometimes even name the dish after the farm that produced its main ingredients!
