Saturday’s fierce windstorm left its mark in Mission, with downed trees and power lines, and widespread power outages which were still being sorted days later.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, there were 28 separate outages in Mission remaining to be fixed. They affected about 1,000 BC Hydro customers.

Many of the outages were in rural areas of the District of Mission, and there were a few scattered small outages in areas in Fraser Valley Regional District to the east. According to BC Hydro’s website, most Mission customers were not expected to get power back until late Monday night.

The largest number of customers affected were east of Powell and west of Dewdney Trunk in northern Mission.

Countless trees and branches came down in the windstorm, taking down power lines.

By Tuesday morning, there were just six outages left to repair in Mission.

The largest was in the area north of Galliford Street, east of Barrett Street, south of Townshipline Avenue and west of Vickery Street.

Hydro said that at the peak on Saturday, 13,446 Mission customers were without power. That number was down to 4,932 by Sunday and 1,432 by Monday.

Crews were able to restore power to over half of customers by Sunday afternoon.

They had to be careful in areas where trees brought down live power lines, preventing them from doing immediate clean-ups in some cases.

quickly by switching those affected on to an undamaged circuit while a damaged one is repaired. But the infrastructure damage this time was so widespread that this wasn’t an option.

Crews instead prioritized the highest-volume circuits first, restoring service as they could.

Extra workers were brought in from all over B.C., from Terrace to Prince George, Kamloops to Vancouver Island.

“There was extensive damage in Abbotsford — a lot of trees down on lines,” said Heer.

“We’re having to rebuild and repair a lot of infrastructure.”

Lisa Coldwells, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, said this storm was unusual in both when it came and how it progressed.

“It wasn’t just one hour worth of wind, it was six hours worth of strong wind.”

with students already at Rick Hansen progressing through established programs while younger cohorts will enter the new science- and business-focused classes. The program will also see the school working with science and business partners, along with the Rick Hansen Foundation.

Godden said the school has also attracted interest from parents outside of its normal catchment area, although the number who have elected to send their kids to Rick Hansen is still modest.

But the key will be ensuring

students in the school’s local area don’t feel like they need to send their kids elsewhere.

“More than anything else, I want to make sure that we serve the kids who live in the catchment and want to attend that school,” Godden said. ❑❑❑ It’s not just at Rick Hansen where students and parents can expect to see changes.

With classes slated to begin next week, Godden said teachers will be laying the groundwork this year for the new curriculum’s province-wide introduction in 2016.

The Abbotsford school district’s annual leadership conference in Vancouver for its trustees, managers, principals, vice-principals and other executives is expected to cost taxpayers around $65,000.

Despite a budget crunch that required increased bus fees for this year, superintendent Kevin Godden said the conference is necessary for the district to fulfill its goal of “excellence in leadership.”

The three-day-conference for some 125 high-level district staff at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Vancouver began last Wednesday with registration, and ran through Thursday and Friday, with meetings, seminars and speakers.

While the total cost for this year’s event isn’t yet known, the district be-

lieves it will likely be in line with that of last year’s conference. That conference cost the district about $65,000, with the Abbotsford Principals’ and VicePrincipals’ Association also contributing a similar amount out of dues paid by its members.

The conference is an annual event focused on the professional development of the district’s leadership.

“We want to recruit, hire and train and prepare the best leaders, because we know it’s going to make a difference in the lives of our students,” Godden said. “In my view, it’s part of the reason we have the high success rate and variety of programs we have in the district.

“We are a high-achieving, high-aiming school district … and you don’t get that without some sort of investment in leadership.”

School district communications manager Dave Stephen said having the conference outside the city is also needed to remove the distractions that accompany the preparation for the upcoming school year.

“We’ve tried doing it in Abbotsford, but because we’re there, the leaders get pulled into their schools to deal with the day-today,” he said.

“When you have an organization our size, which is over 200 employees and a budget of $180 million, and you’re trying to deliver the best educational services you can, you need a chance to pull your leaders into a place where they’re not dealing with the day-today and give them a chance to look at the bigger picture.”

School board chair Cindy Schafer said the conference is “a good opportunity to have the different levels sharing information and getting on the same page.”

As parents, students and teachers prepare for a new school year, big changes are afoot at Rick Hansen secondary school, where a new cohort of Grade 9 students will be the first to take part in programs that focus on science and business learning.

The change of Rick Hansen to a “school of science and business” was announced in February and aims to prepare students for both university and a life in professional careers in business, science and medicine. The programs will be run with a focus on “problem-based learning,” an approach emphasized in a new province-wide curriculum that will be introduced in 2016.

At Rick Hansen, the hope is that the shift in focus will reverse declining enrolment numbers. School district superintendent Kevin Godden said there have already been indications that it’s working.

Godden said teachers and administrators have spent months preparing for the new focus, with teachers attending workshops and developing programs over the summer. The programs will be introduced gradually,

That curriculum aims to shift the focus of education from learning facts to building problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, while retaining an emphasis on fundamentals like reading and math.

“This will allow teachers to get kids to work on problem-based learning. They will do a lot more problem solving and critical thinking – the kinds of things that will allow them to be more successful in the world,” Godden said.

“The teachers’ role is going to change somewhat, because the teacher is not going to hold the answers to all the questions. The kids are going to learn how to ask the questions and learn how to find the answers to real-life problems.” ❑❑❑ September will also see the opening of a new “Early Years Centre” at the Sweeney Neighbourhood Learning Centre. The program will pair StrongStart programs for pre-kindergarten children with resources and referrals to connect families with health, well-being and development assistance.

“It will be a one-stop-shop experience,” Godden said.

Incident on Eagle Mountain Drive Crews were called out Monday morning in Abbotsford to reports of a car balancing on the edge of a cliff.

When they arrived to the incident at about 9:30 a.m., they found that a Volkswagen Beetle had gone off the road and through a fence on Eagle Mountain Drive just off Old Yale Road.

The vehicle was in danger of going off the embankment, but crews were able to tow it to safety.

Everyone got out of the vehicle safely and without injuries.

Police say wet roads and debris were factors in the incident.

Not getting the message Despite daily news coverage of wildfires burning in B.C.’s interior, where residents have lost homes, and in nearby Washington state – where the cost has been far higher, with the loss of three lives – the message still doesn’t seem to be getting through.

On numerous occasions over the past few months, officials made appeals through the media, calling for more public caution and responsible behaviour to prevent forest fires.

And yet, time and time again, authorities announced that another fire had been started by inexcusable, and inexplicable, behaviour, such as throwing a cigarette butt out of a vehicle window.

Some of the reports were beyond comprehensions, such as a group of campers at Harrison Lake, where more than 1,300 hectares recently burned. They were not only ignoring the ongoing campfire ban, but actually setting off fireworks in the midst of the tinder-dry forest.

While this assertion, if true, certainly takes the prize for moronic behaviour, that still doesn’t excuse casual carelessness – whether it’s the flick of a cigarette out a car window onto a street or dropping a butt in a parking lot.

No, pavement isn’t flammable, but all it takes is an accidental kick or a light breeze to roll a glowing cigarette butt into a parched ditch or onto a dusty boulevard.

As one of the hottest and driest summers on record draws to a close, the potential for devastation is not entirely over in all regions, although it is ramping down dramatically in most with recent rainfall.

Nevertheless, this forest fire season has highlighted the need for more regulation and enforcement. Clearly, it’s too much to expect some people to behave responsibly with their cigarettes and camp fires. Like texting and driving, it appears the only way to get the message through is by stiff penalties.

On Point How many times do people have to be told that they should expect, and be prepared for, a major emergency?

Last Saturday was another sharp reminder, although for some folks, it was just another opportunity to complain about government services.

For those who somehow expect weather forecasters and emergency crews to be able to fully anticipate and “fix” natural events like last weekend’s storm – Wake up! Get real! Get ready!

Even the best available technology provides nothing more than a prediction and a varying measure of foreknowledge of what nature might do. In this case, the experts knew a storm was on the way, but did not expect the winds to be as fierce and sustained as they were.

There’s one thing we can reliably expect from Mom Nature, and that’s she can be

unpredictable, especially now in a world involved in climate change.

A few hours’ warning would not have done much good for the great majority of people.

Authorities can’t stop trees – still in foliage and therefore much more vulnerable to the force of high winds – from toppling down on electrical wires.

And that they did, by the thousands, for about six hours straight.

It was the worst storm in nearly a decade. Winds hit 94 km/h in Abbotsford.

More than half a million BC Hydro customers in Lower Mainland lost power – nearly 30,000 in Abbotsford alone. There’s no way enough resources can instantly be on hand to deal with that.

Hydro put some 400 workers in the field, and called in crews on holidays and from across the province to assist. They worked 16-hour shifts to repair the damage and restore power.

Given the scope of the event, I’d say those individuals did an absolutely outstanding job, and I for one am extremely thankful for their efforts.

Ditto the police, who got blitzed by phone calls on Saturday – 130 of them storm-re-

lated, mostly about downed trees and vehicle damage. Their resources, too, were overwhelmed. Response was prioritized by danger levels.

And while on the subject of vehicles, there are a lot of drivers out there who need to brush up on the four-way stop

On at least three occasions, I saw a driver blow through an intersection without stopping, either oblivious to the fact that the lights were out, or unaware of traffic rules, or simply impatient. No doubt some of them are making a visit to an ICBC facility this week.

Here’s a simple suggestion about driving in storm conditions: Unless you have to – don’t. Stay home.

Yes, it’s all dark there.

The TV doesn’t work. Neither does the computer. Or the stove. Or in some cases,

the phone.

But you’re prepared, right?

You’ve got flashlights and batter-powered lanterns. You’ve got a battery-powered radio to listen to the news.

You’ve got a plan for family members to follow in case they’re not home when the calamity strikes. Even if cell service is still up, the millions of panicky or just plain pointless calls will likely jam local capacity, so you have alternate numbers to call out of the area to communicate with family.

You’ve got water, and food that doesn’t spoil, and all the other things that are in a basic emergency kit.

You might even have invested in (and maintained) a small generator that can be used to keep your freezer or fridge running.

You’ve done all these things because you know that last Saturday was really peanuts compared to what might occur in an earthquake or extreme winter storm, when the situation gets really serious – for more than a few days.

And you’re glad for all the work by emergency crews, who will be free to look after the folks who really need help.

Housing, not ‘Big Five’

Abbotsford shares the challenge of many B.C. municipalites when it comes to the lack of affordable housing, and tent camps are only one result.

Many individuals – including the coveted millennials – are having to contend with limited options when it comes to housing, and neither of the senior governments appear to be on the ball. It’s bad enough that the federal government is cutting support of co-op housing – what our province is doing is equally as damaging.

Carlito Pablo’s article “Province sells buildings” (Georgia Straight, Aug.20-27) provides some disturbing details. Minster Rich Coleman has directed B.C. Housing to sell 350 government-owned properties.

As a fiscal conservative, I find the sale of housing assets to be short-sighted, even if these sales may mimic economic activity and even allow the provincial books to look a tad less bleak. But liquidating assets is not the worst of it.

Mr. Pablo lists the assessed value of Stamps Place at $50.5 million, and that of Nicholson Tower at $34 million. Mortgages will be required of purchasers, and rents will, understandably, reflect these mortgage payments. Sure, B.C. Housing can offer further subsidies to, at least partially, offset the increases. But those subsidies will essentially flow through to the mortgage lenders.

I’ve got nothing against banks. But I’d much prefer my tax dollars go to housing than to the “Big Five.”

Too bad our provincial government doesn’t appear to agree.

The MSA Museum Society has a yearly operating budget of about $200,000, receiving a similar fee-forservice payment from the city of $75,000.

Milt Walker, chair of The Reach’s board of directors, said the two groups have not yet discussed with the city what their combined public funding will be in the coming year, though sorting out budget issues is a high priority going forward. He said drawing up a new organizational structure for the combined organization shouldn’t be difficult, and no layoffs will occur.

“There will be jobs for everybody.”

Walker said the job of re-cataloguing, and possibly moving, much of the Trethewey House collection may take extra funds, but couldn’t speculate how much.

Yvonne Hayden, the current president of the MSA Museum Society board, and Dorothy Van Der Ree, the group’s former executive director, both said this merger is a long time coming. In fact, they would’ve preferred if The Reach had been partnered with the MSA Museum Society from the beginning. Both said this likely didn’t happen for “political” reasons, but declined to elaborate.

The Insurance Corp. of B.C. is warning motorists they’ll soon pay more for basic auto insurance.

Because of a rate smoothing policy introduced by the province in 2013, this year’s rate hike must be between 3.7 and 6.7 per cent – within 1.5 per cent of last year’s 5.2 per cent increase on basic rates.

ICBC president and CEO Mark Blucher said the initial calculations suggest the maximum 6.7 per cent basic rate hike is required, but pledged to work with the government to find ways to reduce that number by Oct. 30, when the formal rate application is to be filed with the B.C. Utilities Commission.

He said ICBC is grappling with “an unexpected and rapid escalation in the number of injury claims being reported to us in recent months.”

ICBC’s bodily injury claim costs, which cover pain and suffering, future care and loss of wages, are forecast to hit $2.3 billion this year, up 64 per cent since 2008.

Higher legal and medical costs, more represented claims and more complex, catastrophic claims leading to bigger settlements are among the factors blamed for the jump.

Injury claims are up 10 per cent from a year ago even though the number of crashes is unchanged. ICBC says more fraud is one potential explanation, as well as more minor soft tissue injury claims.

The second minor earthquake in less than 36 hours took place early Saturday morning in the Abbotsford-Mission area.

The 2.6 magnitude tremor was recorded at 4:39 a.m. in an area five kilometres east of Mission and seven kilometres north of Abbotsford, which is also where a 2.4 magnitude tremor occurred on Thursday at 7:07 p.m.

Both of these tremors were smaller than an earthquake recorded on July 5 in Abbotsford.

That quake measured 3.3 on the Richter Scale and was centred about seven kilometres southeast of the city.

Dozens of people were posting on social media that Saturday’s tremor woke them up, and they could feel their house shake

On August 20th, golfers rallied together once again, contributing over $65,000 to the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Thank you to all volunteers and participants for making this year’s event a complete success.

Bosco was following another vehicle on the two-lane stretch of road when the other driver braked suddenly. To avoid a collision, Bosco pulled his vehicle into oncoming traffic and passed the braking vehicle. He passed three other eastbound vehicles before he hit the westbound Gulbranson vehicle at the crest of the blind hill near the 240 Street intersection.

Gulbranson suffered what were described by judge Hamilton as “life-altering injuries.”

There was no evidence Bosco was speeding or that alcohol was involved, the judge said.

But while Bosco has no criminal record, in the nine years before the crash he managed to rack up 11 “separate and related convictions for driving offences,” including six speeding violations and five dangerous or unsafe driving convictions.

His last speeding conviction was recorded a month before the headon crash.

The judge allowed Bosco to serve his 60day sentence on weekends and also imposed a two-year driving ban.

Crisis line introduces texting SEPTIC TANK CLEANING LINE FLUSH & TANK SERVICE

Hopes to help more young people Telecare Crisis and Caring Line has now added texting and instant messaging to its service.

The service will start on the first day of school – Tuesday, Sept. 8 – and run daily from 3 to 9 p.m.

Telecare executive director Debbie Cazander said the additions were made because the organization found that young people have not been using the phone line as often as older people.

“We are aware that most younger people prefer to use their phone to text and not to actually speak to someone,” she said.

Gallery 7 Theatre hosting auditions Gallery 7 Theatre holds auditions on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for its opening production, Around the World in 80 Days.

Volunteers wanted to connect The Abbotsford Connect planning committee is looking for people to volunteer at the annual Abbotsford Connect event on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sevenoaks Alliance Church (2575 Gladwin Rd.).

The event involves service providers, local businesses, community and provincial agencies, and faith-based organizations delivering services and supports to individuals experiencing homelessness and those who are at risk of being homeless.

These services include foot care, haircuts, vision tests, outreach and advocacy support, a clothing exchange and mental health and wellness services. Breakfast and lunch is also provided.

Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event attracted more than 300 participants, more than 30 service providers, and a team of individual donors and sponsor agencies.

Some history about Labour Day in Canada In Canada, Labour Day occurs on the first Monday of September, but it is recognized on various dates in other countries around the world. For many countries, Labour Day is linked with International Workers’ Day, on May 1st. For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first organized

demonstration for worker’s rights. The aim was the release of 24 Toronto Typographical Union leaders who were imprisoned for striking to campaign for a nine-hour work day. At the time, trade unions were illegal, and striking seen as a criminal conspiracy to disrupt trade. In spite of this, the Toronto Trades Assembly was already a significant organization that encouraged workers to form trade unions, mediated in disputes between employers and employees, and signaled the mistreatment of

workers.

There was significant public support for the parade, forcing authorities to realize the important role that the trade unions had to play in Canadian society.

A similar parade was later organized in Ottawa and marched past the house of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John Macdonald. The result was that he addressed the crowd and promised to repeal all Canadian laws against trade unions. This eventually led to the founding of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1883.

Abbotsford native Jordan Kawaguchi will lead Chilliwack into the 2015-16 BCHL season, wearing the captain’s C for the Chiefs.

The team’s coaching staff announced the leadership group last week and head coach Jason Tatarnic elaborated on the choices.

“I want guys who understand and communicate how we do things here,” the bench boss noted. “Off-ice workouts. How we practice and do things in the dressing room. I expect our captain and alternates to lead the way and communicate how things are done.”

Kawaguchi isn’t a rah-rah kid. The thirdyear Chief leads quietly, but Tatarnic said he has the respect of his teammates.

“The guys who don’t have to raise their voices are some of your best leaders,” Tatarnic said. “He says what he needs to say, he’s mature for his age and guys respect and look up to him.”

Kawaguchi wore an A last season and Tatarnic saw him evolving throughout the year.

“I thought he was already a mature kid and as the season went on I could see him maturing even more,” Tatarnic said.

“I thought he did a great job helping our younger players make adjustments.”

The three alternates are Bennett Morrison, Mark Esposito and Ryan Bowen.

Morrison is an interesting case. Acquired from Salmon Arm a third of the way through last season when the injury-riddled Chiefs were desperate for D-men, the Ontario native looked like a depth pickup.

But he played a bigger role as the season wore on, becoming one of the team’s most dependable defenders.

Behind closed doors, Tatarnic said the 19-year-old was a fiery leader.

The Chiefs open the season at home on Saturday, Sept. 12 against the Coquitlam Express.

Otanga, after graduating from Yale Secondary in 2014, spent last season with Abbotsford’s Columbia Bible College Bearcats of the PacWest. The athletic 6’2” shooting guard averaged 8.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Gill, a fellow member of Yale’s grad class of 2014, is a 5’9” point guard best known for his outside shooting prowess. He helped the Yale Lions to a bronze medal at the 2013 Fraser Valley championships, and went on to average 10.3 points and 3.5 assists per game at the B.C. AAA high school provincials.

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball program has augmented its roster with a deep, talented recruiting class, featuring a strong crop of locals along with a pair of athletes from further afield.

The local talent in head coach Adam Friesen’s Class of 2015 includes a trio of players from Abbotsford – forward Devin Brar out of Abby Senior Secondary, and former Yale Secondary backcourt mates Sasha Otanga and Jasdeep Gill. Madison Cooley, a Delta product who played his high school basketball at Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Secondary, rounds out the Fraser Valley contingent.

They’re joined by Mark Johnson, a versatile guard out of College of the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif., and Brandon Burke, a small forward who starred at Ottawa’s Algonquin College last season.

Hadwin entered The Barclays in slightly better shape than his Abbotsford counterpart, but failed to make the cut, finishing at five-over following two rounds.

Hadwin entered the playoffs as the 95th seed. He was one of eight players who lost their top-100 placement, falling just outside the cut for the Deutsche.

The 28-year-old golfer finished as the 107th seed in the FedExCup rankings. He tallied two double-bogeys, nine bogeys and a driving accuracy below 50 per cent in the opening rounds.

This season, Hadwin managed three top-10 finishes and seven top25 finishes, for just over $900,000 in earnings. His best finish of the year came in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial where he tied for fifth.

Jason Day of Australia picked up the win at The Barclays, leading the field by a solid sixshot margin, shooting 68, 68, 63, 62 through four rounds. He took home $1.485 million as the winner’s share.

Three tournaments remain in the PGA post-season.

It is with extreme sadness we announce the sudden passing of Craig Douglas Herrling.

Craig was born to his late mother Trudy Herrling and father Patrick Leveille on January 22, 1985 in North Vancouver, BC and died unexpectedly on August 23, 2015 in Langley, BC. Craig descends from the Herrling / Andrew and Moore / Leveille families and is survived by his father Patrick; brother Ryan; sister Kelsey; special father Ryan Boulette; grandmothers Theresa Herrling (nee Andrew) and Mavis Leveille (nee Moore); grandfather Ronald Herrling, uncles Kevin, Rory and Jay; dear friend Angela Liver and Olivia; grand-aunts Annie Poole, Chief Alana Andrew and grand uncle Harvey Andrew; and many many loving relatives and dear friends.

‘Crog Dawg’ is best remembered for his welcoming demeur, kind heart, and generous attitude. He loved to snowboard, hang out with friends and would be willing to help wherever needed.

Craig graduated from Cariboo Hill Secondary, studied at BCIT and became a welder by trade. His smile and love will be dearly missed.

A prayer service will be held on Wednesday September 2, 2015 at 7:00 pm and a funeral service on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 10:00 am. Both services will be held at Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC. Online condolences can be found at:

LYALL Blake Blake Lyall peacefully passed away with family by his side, on Sunday, August 23, 2015 in the St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC at the age of 62 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Raina and Kirstin and brother Robert all of Winnipeg, as well as many relatives and friends in both provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia.

A celebration of Blake’s life will be held Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Portage la Prairie, MB. Also a Memorial Service will be held at Sevenoaks Alliance Church in Abbotsford Monday, Sept. 7th at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Blake to a charity of your choice.

SCHLAAK, Herbert Herman With great sadness, we announce the passing of Herbert Herman Schlaak of Abbotsford on August 26, 2015 at age 91.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons Timothy (Ellen) of Abbotsford, BC, Gordon (Marlene) of Camrose, AB, Clifford (Sharon) of Armstrong, BC, James (Debbie) of Calgary, AB, and daughter Susan of Abbotsford, BC, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as two brothers, Raymond from White Rock, BC, and Stanley from Phoenix, AZ. He was predeceased by his wife Agnes of 49 years in August of 1997 and his wife Elnora of 15 years in April of 2014, one brother Erwin in May of 2011 and one sister Edith Harriet West in July of 2015.

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road.

After a short but hard battle with cancer we announce with great sadness the passing of Irene. Irene passed away peacefully at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her mother and father Jack and Thelma Carrat and brother Edmond.

She leaves behind her loving husband Vic of 53 years and her two daughters Shelley (Ron), Kori (Craig) and seven grandchildren Kristy, Kory, Kelly, Ryan, Sara (Ryan), Birklee and Tierney. Irene also leaves behind many amazing friends and extended family who she made countless memories with.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Abbotsford Home Palliative Care Team and the nurses at Abbotsford Regional Hospital Tertiary Palliative Care Unit for their wonderful support throughout Irene’s journey. Leon Dec. 17, 1923 ~ Aug. 21, 2015

After a long and meaningful life Leon went peacefully into the presence of his Lord with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Steinbach, Manitoba, he left home, moved to Winnipeg and in 1950 married his sweetheart Marge. There they had three children and long cold winters.

Being a carpenter who loved to work outside, he packed up the family and moved to Abbotsford in 1966, where he remained for the rest of his life.

Leon was a generous man who never said no to someone in genuine need. His integrity and dependability were evident to all who knew him.

He is survived by Marge (his wife of 65 years), sons Brian (Jean), Bruce, daughter Brenda, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 4th at 1:00 pm at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly, 3145 Gladwin Road.

She was predeceased by her father, Bill Florence, and her mother, Peggy Florence, both of whom had a significant and lasting influence on the way she lived her life Her life was devoted to her husband, Jim, and her sons Daniel (Serena), Jordan, Justin and Devin.

She invested in and valued her friends, many of whom claimed her as “sister “ and “aunt”.

Ruth will be remembered for her gentle but mighty spirit, her kindness, and sacrificial lifestyle. Our great loss is heaven’s gain.

Dalrymple, Fredderick William passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on August 26, 2015 at the age of 84 years.

Predeceased by his wife Shirley on February 2, 1982. Survived by his loving children, Deborah, Rod (Colleen), Gord and Angela; grandchildren Misty (Virgil), Michael (Kelly) Michelle (Wayne), Jennifer (Steve), Shannon, Amanda, Connor (Courtney), Victoria (Justin), Gordie, Santana, Janie and William; great-grandchildren Jasmine, Creedan, Dante, Shylah, Vanessa, Kaleb, Freddie and Deacon; brother George (Dorothy); brother-inlaw Gary (Darlene) Cooper; nieces, nephew and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Fred was born on the family farm in Rockland, Ontario Nov 29, 1930. He had three brothers, Harold, George and Robert Dalrymple. Fred left the farm when he was 19 and travelled to New Westminster, BC. He met Shirley Cooper in 1954 at the King Eddy Café in New Westminster where she was a waitress. Fred and Shirley married in New Westminster in 1955. They built a home in Newton and had their first child Deborah in 1956. At that time they were building a home in Bridgeview. They moved to Bridgeview the following year. They had their 2nd child Rod in 1958, Gordon in 1965 and Angela in 1967. Their four children were raised in the family home in Bridgeview.

Fred was a hardworking man, always working to support his family. He worked at numerous jobs, such as Atlin mines in Atlin BC, Scott Paper in New Westminster, Ocean Cement in New Westminster, IXL Products in Delta and Westroc Gypsum on Annacis Island, where he retired at 65 in 1995.

Fred volunteered at the Bridgeview Community Hall where he was president of the Association.

Fred enjoyed camping and hunting. He always had a camper or trailer and spent most summers camping with his kids and family. Every summer heading to the Okanagan to buy fruit to can.

Fred hunted every year until this past year. Hunting was a favourite pastime for him, filling the freezer with moose and deer to feed his family. Some of Fred’s hunting partners were Pete, Bob, Rod and Connor.

Fred’s wife Shirley passed away in 1982, Fred never remarried. He was always there for his family and stayed connected to his four children.

Fred loved going to Green Lake at 70 mile. For the past 11 years he spent every opportunity to head to the cabin with family and friends. Fred helped Rod and Colleen work on the cabin and make it a happy place to be…he loved the cabin.

Fred loved to travel and never turned down an opportunity to travel near or far. Some places he visited were all over Canada, Mexico, Disneyland, Miami and Vegas.

Fred loved to go “digging” at local thrift stores such as MCC and Sally Ann; where he would always look for a new book to read.

The majority of his readings consisted of true, historical novels; such as Canadian Native History as well as Western tales. He also enjoyed going to the swap meet most Sundays.

Fred was a kind, gentle man who loved his family and would help them whenever needed. He loved his little grandbabies and was thrilled whenever another one was born.

He loved going to watch grandson William at all his sports especially soccer. He even made it 2 weeks ago, despite his pain he was happy watching as William scored so many goals for Papa.

Some words shared by Fred’s nephew John Starrett, “He wasn’t rich or famous and many of you never had the good fortune to meet or know him, so let me tell you this….Fred was a good man, a real good man. He was a hardworking man who gave and gave and gave…and never asked for anything in return. He was always there for his immediate family and extended family, including my mother, me my brothers and my sisters. He was rock solid, he was a man I highly respected. He was a man I will try to be more like….

Healing tears will flow, but in time they will be replaced with smiles from countless loving memories.”

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Surrey Alliance Church 13474 – 96 Ave, Surrey, BC. Viewing will be held one hour prior.
