Saving our wild friends

F

or most of us, seeing a wild (or domestic) animal in distress is upsetting, but rarely do we go beyond just hoping that everything will turn out OK. Cranbrook resident Colleen Bailey is an avid outdoorsperson who took a different route and received the training necessary to participate in animal rescue. While she has been rescuing animals for some time now, she is most known for a dramatic rescue she participated in last year.

“Stephanie (McGregor) from the Paw Shop was out with friends. They had spotted two bear cubs, but didn’t see a momma. Someone came by on a dirt bike and said they saw them the previous night as well. She gave me a call,” said Bailey. “I’m a certified animal rescuer. She knows I work with wildlife sanctuaries. The second I got that call, I knew something was not right. I immediately called the Northern Lights Wildlife Society.”

The Northern Lights Wildlife Society has helped over 200 black bears, some grizzly and Kermode bears.

“I needed to assess the situation and talk to the Ministry. She (Angelika Langen, the manager of the Northern Lights Wildlife Society) told me to get eyes on them. I met Stephanie on Bull River Road. She led me to where the cubs were and at that point I knew they had been alone for two or three days. People had spotted them. I called Angelika. She gave me the go ahead to get the cubs,” said Bailey.

Donning a winter jacket despite the 25̊ heat and putting on heavy gloves, she was able to grab the cubs from a tree and put them into a carrier. After a little care, she was able to get them to the wildlife shelter.

“Their names are Fisher and Jo,” said Colleen. “Fisher was sick, (He was diagnosed with Liver Sarcosis), he responded to medication and is now doing well,” explained Bailey. “Both cubs are

set to come back in a couple of months for release and rejoin their gene pool.”

The conservation service later confirmed that the mother had indeed died.

But saving bear cubs is not all that Bailey does for animals. She is a member of the East Kootenay Community Animal Response and Education Society (EKCARES). This non-profit society is run by volunteers and all donations go directly to expenses for animal response work, veterinary care or buying needed equipment.

A rescued kitten Currently the group is working with the BC SPCA on a catch, neuter, return project with a colony of local feral house cats.

“We catch them, bring them in for surgery (neutering), vaccinate them if we can and return them to the colony,” said Bailey. “They are essentially wild and not suitable for homes. There is food, water and in-location shelter available for the cats in the pilot project.”

But the work can be diffi-

cult. Sometimes Bailey and other volunteers will spend days out in the bush, braving insects, heat, cold and other dangers. It takes education and serious training to even attempt these kinds of rescues. Bailey is a trained and experienced temporary emergency animal shelter manager. She is also a volunteer regional responder for the area and points out that all wildlife is the jurisdiction of the MoE (Ministry of Environment & MFLNRO (Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations) and as such people should not capture/remove wildlife without working with the proper experts or authorities.

Despite the hardships involved, there is a strong reason why Bailey and the Society keep working on saving animals—they truly love them.

“These are beautiful, wonderful animals. Sometimes they need a little help and I’m happy to be there for them.”

Great food however, was always foremost in the restaurant and for Head Chef Rusty Cox, it provided him an opportunity he couldn’t resist.

was looking for someone to contribute—so it was perfect timing.”

Cox said that his love of food started early. As a child on his parents’ purebred angus farm in Alberta, he would come home hungry from school.

“My mom said if I was hungry, make something for myself. That’s where it started.”

He was trained in the culinary arts at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) before spending 14 years with Fairmont and CP hotels. He worked around the country, even going to Tanzania.

“I was in Zanzibar, an island on the coast,” said Cox. “It was interesting and unique—would I go back?

Probably not.”

Besides becoming known as a chef, he also started creating ice sculptures, travelling around the world and entering competitions. His large, intricate sculptures have been displayed in a number of locations, including Lake Louise, Edmonton,

China and at the Olympics in Vancouver.

In regards to food, Cox takes a more simple approach than he does with his sculpting.

“The first thing is flavour.

It’s always taste. Too many times I’ve seen things that look beautiful and taste like cardboard,” explained Cox. “Simple, natural and that’s it.”

He noted that around 97 per cent of the items on the menu arrive raw and fresh. The Heid Out’s five red seal chefs work to achieve something new, while keeping to Cox’s mantra of fresh and simple.

“What’s my favourite thing on the menu? That’s got to be the halibut. It is pure simplicity. There are four elements. Take yams, simmer them lightly in a bit of milk and vanilla beans, add seasoning and puree them.

That just goes on the plate.

The halibut is seared with salt and pepper with an apple cider vinaigrette on top. It’s served with our house slaw, which is Grannie Smith apples, pea shoots, snap peas, peppers and red onions. It’s light, fresh and flavourful.”

Back in 1978, Rick Jensen had a dream of creating a company that would build what people wanted while maintaining the quality and style of a professional builder.

That company is New Dawn Developments Ltd. His idea, expanded on by his son, Chad Jensen (who is the president and CEO of the company) was to have the financial and human resources to do just about any project a client could require. Mountain Spirit Resort and Spa and a look at the interior Over the years, New Dawn has completed plenty of projects throughout the region, but when asked what his personal favourite was, Chad didn’t need to think long.

“That has to be Mountain Spirit Resort and Spa,” said Jensen. “We worked on that for five years before we broke ground.”

He explained that his company worked through different versions of the building, different developers and a difficult issue dealing with the geothermal for the resort.

“We hit a layer of rock about 200 feet down so there were a lot of changes to the geothermal early on. From then on, it was a straight go. It’s a beau-

tiful building.”

As for what the future holds for the building trades in the area, Chad said that while there are some challenges, there is reason for optimism.

“The jury is a little out right now because we are so influence by Alberta and the recreation market. I’m interested to see how the new NDP government in Alberta handles the oil price challenges and what it does to the recreation market,” explained Jensen.

“Retirement is still a pretty big driver out here though.

People want to move here to retire and I can’t blame them for that. That’s good for the industry and the area.”

Images from the outdoor Cranbrook Farmer’s Market there was some hesitation and some vendors didn’t know if it would be worth their time,” said Jensen. “That really turned around and I wouldn’t be able to tell you of a grower that hasn’t had success here.”

She added that people are now coming to the market as an entrepreneurial activity.

While it works as a part-time endeavour for some, others have been able to do very well at the market, especially because Kimberley, with the help of Wildsight, now hosts a farmers’ market as well.

The offset days gives vendors two places to sell their wares locally.

“The exciting thing is the market’s role as a business incubator in regards to food

and local goods. This is a testing ground and people can bring in an idea and work on building it as a business,” said Jensen.

Of course, while the farmers’ market is fairly new to the area, it is based on one of the oldest businesses on the planet.

“I feel like it’s about coming back. There are connections with the food and the people at the market. We get disconnected through social media and our laptops, the big box stores and our rushed lives. There is a yearning for actual connections and there are not many better places than the Farmers’ Market to do that.”

Canada is a big country and it is known for the talent of its musicians and the educated ears of its music lovers.

So when a very young Cranbrook band called The Good Ol’ Goats made it to the runner-up position in CBC’s 2013 Searchlight contest— over 3,000 other bands—it was a very big deal indeed.

“That was crazy,” said Nolan Ackert, guitar, banjo and vocals with the band. “I didn’t even know we were entered until round two.

CBC is really good at helping artists out and we had a very supportive community.”

That success garnered plenty of publicity for the band which translated into an in-

crease in shows and a lot less free time. In a short period of time, the group had come a long way from their tightknit roots.

“We mainly met through school or through sports,” said Ackert. “Some of us have known each other since elementary school.”

He explained that at Mount Baker Secondary School, there is a program on music composition and after a couple of friends asked him for help on a project, the seed of the Good ol’Goats was sprouted.

“There was a show at Fort Steele that we were asked to play at,” said Nolan. “We were all terrified—freaking

Part of the reason for the band’s success comes from the varied tastes of its members. Ackert pointed out that there is always good new music coming out and that you shouldn’t be afraid to listen to something old as well.

“What am I listening to right now? I’m listening to Thee Oh Sees, a garage band from San Francisco. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Van Morrison recently and Frank Sinatra, definitely. Every genre has something great.”

The band grew from its original four members and has gone through some changes recently.

“There are six in the band right now and we are quite a bit different than we used to be,” said Ackert. “We used to have more of a bluegrass feel

and we still play all those songs, but now we have less banjo and more slide and dobro. We added a piano and trumpet and having a trumpet really gets people going.”

When you get to know a climber, it soon becomes apparent that their hobby is actually more of an obsession.

The trio behind Spirit Rock Climbing Centre in Kimberley, through a lot of hard work and determination, turned that obsession into a thriving business and community hub. The partners behind the climbing centre are Jim Gray, Ryan Tarves and Kevin Blades.

“Over 20 years ago I worked at a climbing centre in Edmonton. That was one of the funnest jobs I’ve ever had,” said Gray. “I felt that I wanted to be a part of one ever since.”

Tarves, who did lead design

work and was the general contractor in building the centre, explained that they looked at a lot of other indoor climbing centres before starting work.

Located right in Kimberley’s downtown platzl, it had to work for the space and the feel of the location.

“We went to Boulder, Colorado for a Climbing Wall Association meeting and we cribbed from a lot of other ideas,” said Tarves. “One of the best was that we had to dig a hole for the foundation, so why not take the dirt away and get another seven feet of climbing?”

The ideas kept coming.

Gray’s brother in-law Ted Watson, an architect, suggested a large skylight.

“It’s seven by seven and brings in a lot of light because being such a tall space needed that size. It gives it a bit of a church feeling,” said Tarves.

“Now James lives on the roof, so we thought why not climb into the skylight? It gave us another 12 feet of climbing space. We offer nearly 50 feet of height and that compares with bigger centres.”

And the dream is now paying off. Local businesses support the centre in a number of ways and it has plenty of clients. The centre also works with kids and school groups.

After the children have training in the centre, the option to take their skills out into

the great outdoors is open to them.

“Kevin is the lead on this,” said Tarves. “Train them in the gym and bring them outside for a taste of real rock.

The kids love it.”

Because of the support of the other local businesses, the centre also coordinates Kids Rock Camp. Attendees climb in the morning and do other activities like swimming at the pool, bowling, or visiting Centre 64 to do art.

“Yes it’s a lot of work but its one of the best things I’ve ever been involved in,” said Gray. “It’s all about community. People don’t have to be alone and out of shape anymore and they can hang out with some very cool people.
