this event – there has truly been Something in the Air at the Bulkley Valley Fair. The Bulkley Valley Exhibition is an event put on by our community for our community. The Fall Fair has a rich history with many families whose roots run deep. The facility and grounds have been a collaborated effort of thousands of people in many different walks of life over a great length of time. The Town of Smithers and the BVAIA recognize the importance of this facility to the community. This year’s Exhibition is filled with many attractions: Hall Exhibits, Light Horse Show, the ever-popular Trainers’ Challenge, BCRAsanctioned Rodeo, Livestock Shows including swine, sheep, poultry, rabbits and cattle. The Loggers’ Sports will be back, with a newlybuilt Log Rolling Pond, and with our community built on the industries of logging and mining, I’m sure this will be an event to watch. Shooting Star Amusements will provide our guests with some
kids’ activities. Our Main Stage will have some excellent entertainment including Bobby Wills, Appaloosa, The Racket, Mark Perry, Theresa Pasaluko, Hillbilly Scrabble and many more. Don’t forget the 4-H auction, and support our community’s youth, or catch the gentle giants in the Draft Horse Pull. Take some time to wander the Mall Vendors, indulge yourself in the fabulous array of foods available: candy apples, snow cones, mini donuts – and the Fair is not complete without a cob of corn! This year has been very active for our association, and we would like to thank all of our sponsors and volunteers for their continued support. Without the support of this community, this event would not happen. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we would like to thank you for your help, and Salute to that Community Something that is In The Air at the Bulkley Valley Fair. Gina DeHoog – President.

Welcome to the Fair! The Fall Fair is an event Smithereens and visitors to our valley look forward to all year. It’s a time to renew friendships, spend time with family and most of all have fun. The Fair is also an opportunity to celebrate our valley’s agricultural heritage and appreciate those who work every day to ensure a sound future for local agriculture. I’m always impressed that volunteers are able to organize such a large, successful event. The organizing committee has once again worked very hard to ensure things go off without a hitch. If you see one of these hard-working individuals at the Fair, please pass along your thanks – they deserve it. If you’re from out of town, we invite you to experience some of the wonders of the beautiful Bulkley Valley. Do some shopping at our unique stores along Main Street. Get out for hike on our beautiful trails. Stop in at our museum and art gallery and learn a bit about what makes this area so special. No matter what brings you and your family to the Fair – the exhibits, the rides, the food, or the festivities – we hope you have fun! I look forward to seeing you there. Taylor Bachrach Mayor, Smithers, B.C.
This year’s theme, There’s Something in the Air at the Bulkley Valley Fair, speaks to the excitement of the Fair and all of the agricultural and other activities that make it such a dynamic event. As we welcome all of the attendees, it’s a timely opportunity to recognize both the rich history and ongoing development of the fair. We are a valley full of creative, hardworking and passionate people, with a dedicated connection to the natural bounty of our region. Fall Fair weekend highlights that fact. Every year I am amazed by the dedication and skill shown by the producers and participants, and I am thankful for the hard work of the volunteers and organizers that make it all possible. On behalf of the Council and staff of the Village of Telkwa, we wish everyone involved a wonderful weekend full of fun and friendship! Darcy Repen Mayor, Telkwa, B.C.
Dear organizers, participants and attendees: As the MLA for Stikine I welcome all to the 96th BV Exhibition and congratulate organizers and volunteers for another successful year. The longevity of the Exhibition reminds us about the important agricultural roots we have in our communities. This year’s theme There’s Something in the Air makes me think about the new interest among the general public in where and how our food is produced, especially in light of the impacts of climate change on agriculture. It is also a good reminder of how clean air, along with pure water and fertile soil, is the foundation of growing food. We are blessed with having an abundance of all three of those elements in the Bulkley Valley along with the local knowledge necessary for a successful agriculture sector. The BVX is a great event to celebrate that knowledge and cherish our unspoilt land, water and air. Have a great time at the EX – see you there! Doug Donaldson MLA, Stikine”

BV Exhibition Staff Message Hello! and Welcome to the 96th Annual Bulkley Valley Fair – where there’s definitely Something in the Air! Believe it or not, our Division Coordinators, volunteers and staff have been working since January to bring you what is undoubtedly the Show of the North. It seems like there’s been so much to do, with planning and organizing, thinking up new stuff and revamping the old, then running around getting things happening, getting ready, making up packages, bringing stuff in, getting stuff out – and now Fair Time is here and we sure hope you enjoy these crazy four days! This year’s Fair is indeed a mix of the old and the new. The Exhibit Halls have some new classes this year – but their spirit is in the old traditions of home baking and hand-made displays. The Loggers’ Sports are way bigger and better this year (and we’re sure that the new Log Rolling Pond will most definitely make a splash!) – and
these events are totally in the tradition of the old-time lumberjacks and forest workers. The Livestock shows and competitions are as traditional as you can get – but there’s always something fresh and new about lambs and heifers and the 4-H kids who show them. The Kids’ Area has had a total makeover this year, and we’re so grateful the people who’ve helped and supported it. We also can’t begin to describe how much fun we’ve had with this year’s Feature Attraction – the Baby T-Rex Dinosaur that you’ll see in the Parade, at the Opening Ceremonies, in the Dinosaur Corral and (if he escapes) even around the grounds! Stick around for the shows on the Claude Dohler stage – because the price of your admission gets you a whole series of stage shows! Thursday is Youth Night – when the stage rocks to the music of The Racket and other local youth bands.
Friday night is for country & western lovers, with CCMA winner Bobby Wills as well as Appaloosa and Ryan Hovland. Saturday night is HomeGrown Heroes – with our very own Mark Perry leading the pack, which also includes Theresa Pasaluko, Hillbilly Scrabble and many others. Where else can you see a concert like this for a big $15? And as ever, we give a huge round of applause to our sponsors, our volunteers and all the hard-working folks that make this happen. This is such an amazing community, such a wonderful place to live, and it gives us all such a boost when someone says, “Sure, leave it to me, I can do that!” Thanks so much to everyone for chipping in, helping out with your time and resources, and to you, our visitors and guests, for making it all worthwhile. We’ve had a blast! Jan, Ruth, Tirion, Trent, Alfred and all the BVX crew

Frank Strimbold
Frank was born to a pioneer family (since 1906) and spent nearly his entire life in Topley, B.C. Frank took over his father’s farm, and in 1965 Frank and Dianne purchased their first registered Black Angus Cattle. Frank quickly grew fond of the Angus Cattle (Black Angus of course) and anyone who knew Frank knew that there was no better breed to have. Frank made no bones about it! Poplar Meadows Angus was chosen as their herd name. Poplar Meadows was suiting as they grazed in the beautiful “poplar meadows” of their farm in Topley. 2015 marked 50 years in the Angus business and as a member of the Canadian Angus Association for Frank and Dianne. Dianne was presented with their 50 year Heritage Membership Award at Frank’s celebration of life ceremony. Dianne and Frank were married June 14, 1963 in Burns Lake, B.C. They raised six children together in Topley. The kids grew up being involved in 4-H and Frank and Dianne were involved as 4-H leaders and Assistant Leaders in the Topley 4-H club, as well as being active in the Bulkley Valley 4-H Senior Council. Frank spent over 20 years as a director of the BC Angus Association, including as Chair, and was elected to the
December 17, 1939 to March 20, 2015 Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors to represent B.C. from 2006-2012. Frank’s other involvements included being the Sport Advisor to the BC Winter Games for Cross Country Skiing, and 12 years as a Director on the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako. Frank also drove school bus for over 20 years after working in the bush. Frank and Dianne received an award last year at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition for being long time participants of the fair. Generations of the Strimbold family continue Frank’s legacy showing at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition as well as other local fairs. His love of Black Angus Cattle is being carried on by both his daughters. Tanya and Lia each have their own farms in Houston, B.C. Some of their animals, of course, coming from Frank and Dianne’s herd! Tanya and Monty are proud to continue on with the Poplar Meadows Angus name and carrying on the Poplar Meadows Legacy. Over the years many of Frank and Dianne’s cattle were seed stock for many BC Angus breeders. Frank could always be found in or around the show ring at the BVX with a coffee in his hand and a friend at his side, usually B.S.’ing! Frank loved to watch his daughters participate in the open shows as well as his grandchildren in the local 4-H shows. A true pioneer of our area, Frank will be sadly missed.

Jim Davidson Long Time Fall Fair Supporter Nov. 21, 1931 to June 30, 2015
Jim Davidson, who passed away recently, was a local resident farmer and long time supporter of the Bulkley Valley Fall Fair. Jim was involved in many ways over the years starting as a young lad supporting his mother Phyllis Davidson’s community endeavours. The Davidson Hall is named in memory of his mother Phyllis who served for many years as a director of the fair. Jim’s farming career started with chickens in the backyard in town. He quickly decided he preferred larger animals and he started with a few calves and progressed to his own farm. He started farming on Zobnick Road and moved to the Yelich farm on Snake Road in the early 1960s. There he ran a dairy and beef farm. He had rangeland close to Moricetown but then was able to add land alongside the original farm. This ended the long cattle drive along Telkwa High Road. It is very true that good fences make for good neighbours … or at least assist in neighbourhood harmony. Today the family farm is still operated by his sons. Jim showed Dairy cattle at the Fall Fair from the 1960s through the 1980s. He was proud of his Grand Champion cows like Crystal and Bonnie but the cows didn’t particularly like the change in their routine. He worked with 4-H as an assistant leader to Roy Benjamin for the Dairy Club. He often judged 4-H cattle and public speaking. He helped out with the Dairy Show and Milking Demonstrations in the 1990s and early 2000s. He liked to talk to the crowd and explain the milking process and agriculture in the valley in general. He encouraged the Dairy Foundation to have a booth at the Fair to promote education and awareness of agriculture. During his time on Town Council he worked with the Fall Fair committee. He felt it was very important for people to know about the land, where and how
their food was grown, to support local people and the local economy. Most recently he purchased the local abattoir so that farmers would continue to have a place to process their product. Jim believed in the people of the Bulkley Valley and in the importance of the agricultural industry to a healthy community. He saw the Fall Fair as a great venue for combining those two aspects in this valley, which he loved. He also enjoyed pie at the Quick booth, hamburgers at the Elks, corn on the cob from the Rotary and chatting with all the people. As far as any family member can recall, he never missed a Fall Fair.

Loggers’ Sports The BVX Loggers’ Sports is pleased to welcome everyone to the new and improved 2015 show! The show will be hosted by Canadian loggers’ sport champion Stirling Hart and features fun for the entire family including men’s, ladies’ and kids’ events. This year’s special feature will be the new log rolling pond – a pool of water deep enough to float a couple of big logs. Think you can walk on a floating log? What about when your opponent is making it roll? We’d love to see you try! This is the place where competitors cap the events off with a nice cool dunk in the water. Other events include cross cut sawing for men and ladies – using a five-foot long handsaw. The ladies get partners for this event (Double Buck, or a “Jack and Jill” team), men are expected to go it alone. You have to wonder how they managed in the days before log processors. Also from the days before modern log harvesting equipment are the
men’s and ladies’ choker races where contestants navigate an obstacle course to set the wire cable choker still sometimes used to drag logs out of the bush. We can’t believe that axe throwing was ever a part of a lumberjack’s job, but it’s a great event for men and ladies. Like pub darts on a grand scale, contestants throw a double-bit axe at a target four inches thick and twenty feet away. No points if it doesn’t stay in! Chainsaw bucking will be taken to the next level this year at the show with two events including saw appearing stock (100cc max) and stock saw (60cc). The top men’s and ladies’ point winners of the events will be receiving a grand prize of a brand-new chainsaw – no small potatoes if you’re thinking about trying for it! Of course there are events for our junior wannabe-loggers too. Kids (5-12 years of age) can sign up for the Nail Drive or the Kids Choker Race – just like the adult version but using a rope choker

instead of a wire cable. And if your little ones just can’t stay out of the sawdust pile, sign them up for the Sawdust Goodie Bag Dig! It’s free for the first 25 lucky 3-6 year olds that sign up for this limited spot event. If your artistic side needs a workout, there will also be a poster contest with the theme of “plant a tree”. Open to everyone, in three age groups (kids, youth and adult). We look forward to having a fun and safe event and hope to see you down here! Storey Photography Photo

Rodeo
Smithers Rodeo Club and the BVX bring back the action packed BCRA Rodeo and Bullarama on August 27 through to August 29. The Rodeo lineup starts with the ever popular Bullarama on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. In this show it’s all bulls, cowboys and pure adrenaline! Each bull rider will attempt to ride not one but TWO bulls during the 2.5 hour performance. The rider tries to stay on for eight seconds (the longest eight seconds of his life?) … and we should warn you, the bull usually wins! The high combined score will be the 2015 SRC Bullarama Champion Bull Rider. Prepare to be wowed by our halftime entertainment in all three rodeo performances this year. Young Gunz Trick Riders come to us after representing Canada in the Australian Trick Riding Championship in Sydney. These three young riders will dazzle you with their athletic ability in the saddle – and the horses that they trust with their lives will amaze you with the precise training and talent in this partnership performance. These kids are all under 16 years old and have been performing together for several seasons. Be
prepared for a spectacular show by these kids and their mounts. Also on for all three performances is the Wild Horse Race sanctioned by the Canadian Wild Horse Race Association. This is always a favorite, and features some local boys competing in this event as well as teams from across B.C. and Alberta. Friday and Saturday evening performances start at 5 p.m. These are BC Rodeo Association sanctioned events offering a full lineup of Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Breakaway Roping, Tie-down Roping, Ladies’ Barrels and Bull Riding for the adult competitors. Youth Events include Junior Steer Riding, Breakaway Roping, Barrels and of course PeeWee Barrels! The Wild Cow Milking will be on Friday and Saturday showcasing all local businesses and teams of three trying desperately to get that elusive drop of milk into
the pop bottle. Get a team together and try your luck! Our shows would not be complete without our announcer Jay Savage back for another year; keeping everyone informed and involved. Veteran Squirrely Early Anderson from Alberta joins us this year as our Rodeo clown; he’ll be bringing lots of laughs. Please check out all the great sponsors of the rodeo at www.smithersrodeoclub. com or facebook.com/smithersrodeoclub. Drop in, say hi and tell them “Smithers Rodeo at the BVX” sent you! 4-H Division The BV 4-H District is made of four clubs, Topley, Quick Community, Evelyn and MidValley 4-H Clubs. The 4-H program provides young people with an opportunity to learn how to become productive, self-assured adults who can make their community and country a good place in which to live. This is fostered through project and program work, experiences with their 4-H club members and leaders and their participation in district, regional and even provincial programs. The goal of the 4-H program is youth development. The objectives of 4-H clubs are knowledge, leadership, citizenship and personal development. 4-H stands for head, heart, hands and health. (The 4-H pledge describes the significance
of the four H’s.) The philosophy of the 4-H program is explained by the following; Motto: Learn to do by Doing. Mission: Inspire, educate and develop youth into empowered community leaders. Vision: The youth focused, community based organization of choice in B.C. As a 4-H’er, you can have the feeling of accomplishment that comes from trying and succeeding at something new – whether it’s fixing a small engine, knitting a sweater, training an animal or presenting a speech or demonstration to an audience. Opportunities include various provincial and regional programs that members can attend to visit new places and make new friends! Senior 4-H members can also apply for scholarships
and earn External Credits for Grade 11 and 12. See what kind of opportunities 4-H can offer you today! Talk to a 4-H member or leader during the fair, visit the B.C. 4-H website, or contact Events Coordinator Lois Taylor at 250847-3692 or Key Leader Stacy Dupuis at 250-876-8184 for more information.

Livestock Division Livestock at the BVX! Have you ever wondered what the Livestock shows are all about? You aren’t alone! If you are not a farmer or livestock owner you may not know about this other world of showing your Angus heifer calf or parading your Hereford bull around the livestock ring at the fair. Not to mention the pigeons, rabbits, chicken and oh those sheep! Is there anything cuter than the lamb class at the BVX? The livestock shows are the yearly opportunity for the owners to present their animals in front of a professional or expert judge. Judges get this grand title by being an experienced show person themselves with a good knowledge of the species of animal they are judging. For example our Dairy and Swine judge this year is Ken Schwaerzle from Agassiz, with decades of experience in showing Dairy cattle from his herd and being a 4-H leader for just about as long. The 2015 BVX sheep Judge is Johanna Walker from Langley. Johanna was raised on her family sheep farm, showing Open and 4-H from the time she was very young and then starting her own sheep shearing business which put her through University. Scott Severtson from Alberta will be

judging all the beef cattle classes this year, including choosing the prestigious Supreme Cow and Bull of all Breeds. Scott’s family raises and shows Gelbvieh and Angus cattle all across Canada and the U.S. Watch him slap the winning Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer on the rump Friday, August 28 in the beef ring! If you come early to the fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday morning you can watch all the livestock getting ready for the show; clipping hair, cleaning hooves, shampooing, even blow drying! Everyone has a turn at the wash racks, even the pigs (who happen to love it). When it’s show time they will be led (or pushed in the case of the swine) to their respective show rings; we have Dairy, Beef, Sheep and Swine where the Judge will assess them against each other and to specific Breed type standard. The Judge will place the class first to fifth generally and the winners will receive ribbons or rosettes, prize money and maybe move on to that Supreme Champion designation! Livestock shows are full of camaraderie, friends, good times, lots of coffee and early mornings. The Racket are hugely popular throughout BC’s Northwest and have played to rave reviews all over the rest of the province. Consisting of Elijah Larsen on lead guitar and vocals, Stephen DeWit on bass, and Simon Stockner on drums, the band set off to stardom after winning a province-wide competition put on by Youthink Magazine, awarding them the title of “BC’s Best Teen Band of 2013”. Following this award, they’ve headlined at Kispiox Valley Music Festival in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and headlined at Midsummer Music Festival in 2014. They have also opened for Trooper in 2012 and 54-40 in 2014.
The Racket
9 p.m. Thursday, August 27th
Raised in the rich festival scene of Northern BC, The Racket know darn well how to spark energy and get a dance floor (or a dirt field) grooving. The trio plays with techniques and sounds, mixing styles and coming up with original material. From their live performance, you can expect tight n’ funky grooves, slow n’ steady blues, and the driving force of stomp-folk, all the while maintaining a rock vibe. With a lot of songs revolving around social change, their goal is to set the new age to a heavy downbeat. Everything these boys do is topped off with a large dose of originality!
Appaloosa
8 p.m. Friday, August 28th and 1 p.m. Saturday, August 29th Local favourite Appaloosa is returning to the Bulkley Valley for another dynamite evening of fun, dancing and great music! Appaloosa is a four piece band featuring the talented female singer Randi McMillan, as well as Jake Stolz on lead guitar and vocals, Charlie Frie on bass guitar, and Rick McVicar on drums. Since its inception in 1991, Appaloosa has been in great demand both on the club circuit
Bobby Wills
An acclaimed musician with a reputation for writing from the heart, award-winning country artist Bobby Wills is at the BV Exhibition for the first time! Adopted as a baby by a Calgary family, Wills was always listening to country music with his adoptive father. On a trip to Australia, after a surprising reaction from a crowd while singing at an open mic night, Wills decided to pursue music. “I’d poked around music but I’d never put any real effort into it, so I started to learn to play guitar while I was over there”. After returning to Canada, Wills found that his adoptive mother was trying to connect with him. He could not have anticipated the artistic genealogy he
9 p.m. Friday, August 28th
was about to discover, including five siblings and a musical streak a mile wide that ran throughout his biological family. “The first night I visited my biological father, we sat up all night listening to records. We both shared an affinity for a great lyric, and it was then that I realized ‘This is real. This is in my blood. This isn’t just a crazy dream I had; this is part of who I am.’ It really crystallized for me then.” This journey solidified my love of music and aspiring passion to pursue this love on a professional level. Since then, Bobby Wills has released three studio albums, and has also won the ‘Rising Star’ award presented by the Canadian Country Music Association in 2013.
and for corporate functions. They have shared the stage with such legends as Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam, Pam Tillis, Neil McCoy, Marty Stuart, Brad Paisley and many more. If you’re looking to be entertained by a very versatile band with tons of talent and a huge repertoire, Appaloosa is the band for you! Appaloosa will also be playing at the Rodeo Dance on Saturday, August 29th.

Theresa Pasaluko & the Great Yonder
3 p.m. Friday, August 28th and 8 p.m. Saturday, August 29th Former Smithereen Theresa Pasaluko is back in town for the BV Exhibition! Fueled by emotion, Pasaluko has staked her claim as an ambitious and powerful female force. Having honed a sound that blends roots, rock and soul with a taste of the blues, she currently draws inspiration from her home in Victoria. Pasaluko’s sets are charged, intimate and engaging, enveloping the audience with her swelling vocals and passionate sense of presence. Her lyrics capture the temptation of escapism in the face of life’s immensity, while pressing
the listener not to run from their emotions. Pasaluko has a honed skill for articulating experience, as if she’s willing to feel everything so you don’t have to. Pasaluko has performed alongside such notable artists as Alex Cuba, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Fred Eaglesmith, Rachelle van Zanten, and David Miles. Her tunes have been featured on the CBC and the Peak. She has also recently placed second in a Canada wide contest to perform at Port Renfrew’s annual winter festival, Song and Surf.
Mark Perry & Northwest 9 p.m. Saturday, August 29th Mark Perry is a prolific songwriter, born and raised in Smithers. In his early teens, Mark played in basement bands and at school dances and weddings. From weekend bands to hitting the road making a living in the bars, playing music became a major part of his life. Mark has played at festivals, coffee houses, theatres and bars across western Canada. He writes about hockey games on frozen lakes, plane crashes, bank robberies, towns dying, towns being born, laughs, tragedies
and the people that come with them. With 8 albums to his credit, Mark is a seasoned performer, playing with many other musicians and working with many producers. “I’ve worked with quality people over the years and I have good things to say about all of them. I’ve tried different combinations searching for the right fit. To me, music and song writing is like life’s journey, start writing and see how the story unfolds. I have had a few almost and just missed moments for sure, but I try to keep moving along.”
Comedy and Juggling with Paul Isaak various times
Brought up in Calgary, Paul Isaak has been performer for most of his life. At age 14, after receiving a juggling book as a gift, Paul was instantly hooked, and began throwing around anything he could reach. Oranges, apples, China figurines and cats were never safe in his home again! Since then, his show has taken him around the world, and offered him the opportunity to perform with some of his childhood idols, including The Beach Boys! Taking the stage with energy and enthusiasm, Paul Isaak’s show is a
captivating mix of juggling and other mind-blowing tricks. Give him a machete, he’ll shave off his stubble. Give him some Saran Wrap, he’ll wrap himself up in it and perform an escape that would put Harry Houdini to shame! His other hobbies include eating fire, juggling eggs, sometimes even juggling fire, and riding a 6-foot-high unicycle. What could possibly go wrong with these tricks? … except maybe EVERYTHING! Paul Isaak will be performing on the main stage throughout the weekend, and sometimes hangs out at the Kids Area as well.

Light Horse
Our show kicks off with our Halter Classes Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the CityWest Main Ring. Horses are shown “in hand,” meaning that they are led, not ridden, and are judged on their conformation and suitability as breeding stock. The Dressage Classes will be performing Thursday and Friday mornings at 9 a.m. in the AltaGas Dressage Ring. Dressage is a competitive equestrian sport, sometimes defined as “the highest expression of horse training,” where “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.” At the peak of a dressage horse’s gymnastic development, the horse will respond smoothly to a skilled rider’s minimal aids. The rider will be relaxed and appear effort-free while the horse willingly performs the requested movement. Dressage is occasionally referred to as “Horse Ballet.” Trail is a competitive class where horses and riders in western-style attire and horse tack navigate a series of obstacles. Contestants ride the course one at a time. A typical trail course requires horse and rider to open and pass through a small gate while mounted; walk across a fake bridge; cross over a set of rails or logs at a walk, trot or lope; back up, often with a turn while backing; side pass, often over a rail or log; turn within a confined area; and tolerate some type of “spooky” obstacle, such as having the rider put on a vinyl raincoat. New for 2015 is the BVX Wild Trail Challenge, where the horse and rider are judged not only on how quickly they finish the course, but also on the level of horsemanship. More points are awarded for demonstrating a partnership with the horse and completing the task with ease. Reining is a western riding competition where the riders guide the horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. Reining is often described as a Western form of dressage riding, as it requires the horse to be willing, responsive and in tune with its rider, whose aids should not be easily seen. A horse that pins his ears, conveying a threat to his rider, refuses to go forward, wrings his tail in irritation or displays an overall poor attitude is not being guided willingly, and is judged accordingly. Watch the Reining Classes on Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m. in the Indoor Arena. Driving, when applied to horses, ponies, mules, or donkeys, is a broad term for hitching equines to a wagon, cart or other horse-drawn vehicle by means of a harness and working them in this way. Pleasure Driving is a horse show class that features light breeds of horses and ponies hitched to a twoor four-wheeled show cart. Most classes are judged on the horse’s manners, performance, quality and conformation. You can watch the Driving Classes on Saturday morning in the Driving Ring. People unfamiliar with horse shows may be confused by the difference between Hunter Classes and Jumper Classes. Hunters are judged subjectively on the degree to which they meet an ideal standard of manners, style, and way of going. Conversely, Jumper Classes are scored objectively, based entirely on a score determined by whether the horse attempts the obstacle, clears it, and finishes the course in the allotted time. Jumper Classes are held with a course of showjumping obstacles, including verticals, spreads, double and triple combinations, usually with many turns and changes of
Storey Photography Photo
direction. The intent is to jump cleanly over a set course within an allotted time. Time faults are assessed for exceeding the time allowance. Jumping faults are incurred for knockdowns and blatant disobedience, such as refusals. This is always a popular and exciting performance for our spectators. Hunter can be seen on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and Jumper on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. Gymkhana Classes are mounted games which include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole race, keg race, flag race, and pole bending. All of these events are designed to display precise, controlled actions and tight teamwork between horse and rider at speed. This can be very exciting to watch and allows for some enthusiastic cheers for the spectators to help the horse and rider team beat the clock. You can see the BV Exhibition Gymkhana on Sunday around 10 a.m. in the CityWest Main Ring.

Kids’ Area Whatever’s in the Air, there’s a Dinosaur at the Fair! The star attraction at the Kids’ Area this year is a real (maybe) live Dinosaur! He’s a baby T-Rex, he’s eight feet tall and sixteen feet long, he’s huge and scaly and we sure hope he’s friendly … and he’s hanging out at the Dinosaur Corral in the brandnew enlarged and expanded Kids’ Area! Long squished in between the Livestock Rings and the Commercial Mall, the Kids’ Area has moved to its new location between the Rodeo ring and the Exhibit Halls – where it’s got room to grow and branch out. And has it ever done so! We’re quite sure that the Dinosaur will simply blow your socks off … but if you prefer something a bit smaller
and cuddlier, how about visiting the Petting Zoo? There’s cute fluffy bunnies and chickens (yes, there’s actually a fluffy chicken!), there’s little goats and a friendly little pig, there’s alpacas and Flirt the Pony, and even a mini-cow! Next to the Petting Zoo is the Bulkley Acres mini-farm. Dig for potatoes and carrots, collect eggs from the chicken coop, pick your own salads, even make your own tea! For kids who kinda think that food magically appears on grocery store shelves, Bulkley Acres will be a blast! Our carpenters have also been busy, building a brand-new Kids’ Stage – where you’ll find scheduled kids’ entertainers every day. Come and see Kellie the Ventriloquist, with her friends Magrau the Bird
and Kamilla the Frog – or Penelope the Clown with her amazing face painting, juggling and magic show. The Kids’ Activity Tent will be here as always, with fun things for the little kids to do – and if it all gets a bit much, parents and tots will appreciate the Quiet Tent to hang out and chill … until it’s time to get busy again!!

Dinosaur Discovered!
Could Smithers become BC’s answer to Drumheller? In a scientific breakthrough of truly epic proportions, renowned paleobiologist Professor William H. Oswald recently succeeded in reconstructing a living animal from fossilized DNA – and discovered the modern world’s first living Tyrannosaurus Rex! Stunned and elated with his achievement, Professor Oswald
exclaimed, “This is stupendous! I can’t wait to bring this fabulous animal to the BV Exhibition!” Professor W.H. Oswald, who retired to Smithers from Jurassic University, discovered the remains of an ancient tree fern stump during his recent archaeological dig in the swamp behind 19th Avenue. “It was an exciting discovery, of course,” Professor Oswald enthused, “though it basically looked like a chunk of dead wood to anyone who wasn’t as smart as me. But fortunately, I’m really smart …” Professor Oswald made use of an experimental technique known as recombinative DNA restructuring to create what is
believed to be the first complete DNA sequence from the Paleolithic era. Top secret video recordings from the laboratory hidden in Professor Oswald’s garden shed show an egg the size of an old VW Beetle cracking, and the first signs of a leathery snout appearing. Professor Oswald strenuously denied rumours that the egg in fact really was an old VW Beetle, claiming that the cracks could not possibly have been a result of the car door opening. “People are all too ready to dismiss the achievements of a brilliant intellect,” he said. “But I shall bring my baby Tyrannosaurus Rex to the Fall Fair this very year! People shall see with their very own eyes that a dinosaur is again walking the Fairgrounds of Smithers!!” Is this true?? Only at the 2015 Fall Fair can you find out …

Kellie Haines - Ventriloquist Ventriloquist and family entertainer Kellie Haines started talking to her stuffed animals at the age of eight and when they started talking back, she knew she had a show! Now Kellie performs with her puppets Magrau the Bird and Kamilla the Frog, and together they have toured theatres, schools, festivals and events throughout North America. Kellie wrote and performed two popular, long-running musicals:

Frogs in Space – Kamilla’s Quest and Rocket Magrau – Space Bird! – both hugely successful multimedia shows. She is excited to work with Magrau and Kamilla at the 2015 BV Exhibition which introduces some of her new songs. Her puppets, Kamilla, a fouryear frog with red hair, and Magrau, a precocious bird of twelve, provide non-stop laughs and keep everyone guessing as to who is really pulling the strings. Prepare for some belly laughs!

Grandpa Boonstra’s back this year, with 30-some tractors dating back to the 1940s, and Ernie Bree is bringing a collection dating right back to 1919! These ol’ workhorses have got more years on them than most fairgoers, and you have to wish they could tell you their stories of life on the farm way back when. Some have been rescued from Kitimat, the Okanagan and as far away as Saskatchewan, and lovingly restored to working condition. Others have spent their lives on the family farm, now retired from their hard-working days. See them up close over by the Loggers’ Sports, or in the Antique Tractor Parade around the Grounds at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Tractor Events: For a race with a difference, come and see the Slow Tractor Race at 3 p.m. on Friday by the Loggers Sports. The prize goes to the tractor that comes LAST! – as long as you never actually stop! You can even try out a real tractor yourself. Enter the Blindfold Tractor Drive at 3 p.m. on Saturday – for a loonie entry fee, contestants get to drive a tractor blindfolded, and the winner is whoever
comes closest to the finish line without going over it! If you can help out with the tractor events, please call Grandpa John Boonstra, 250846-5202.

Draft Horse Whether you’re looking for stately grandeur, agricultural tradition or sheer horse-power, there’s nothing to compare with the Draft Horse Show! Over their thousand-year history, these animals have carried knights in shining armour, hauled cannons and gun carriages, ploughed fields and dragged stumps, and are highly valued in modern times for forestry activities where no machine can go. Known for their intelligence and their willingness to work as well as their incredible strength, draft horses can pull twice their own weight, often with pinpoint accuracy. Whether you like to watch these magnificent creatures in action, or simply watch and admire, the Draft Horse Show is an event you shouldn’t miss. The Show starts on Friday at noon with Halter classes, where you can check out the best and most beautiful of the draft horse breeds. Breeds showing include Percherons,

Storey Photography Photo Indoor Arena Judges Francis Teer from Houston Ben Gumm from Keremeos Larry Wierenga from Smithers
Horses will be supplied by Just Wishin’ Quarterhorses
Trainer of the North Challenge The Challenge is back for the sixth year and we are excited to showcase the trainers’ talents. This year we have two new trainers and last year’s winner. The two judges, Frances Teer and Ben Gumm, are back from last year and we are happy to have Larry Wierenga, one of the 2013 trainers as the third judge.
The horses are from a local horse farm Just Wishin’ Quarterhorses, owned by Tom and Donna Davidson, in Houston. They provided the great horses in 2014 and we hope they will be able to provide us with horses for the next few years. The Trainers are competing against
each other to showcase their ability to train a horse in a very short amount of time in front of an audience while teaching the audience as well. This is not a simple task, and we applaud their efforts. Keep in mind that the training is mostly about the horse and its ability to be taught in such a short time frame.
Severin Pederson Severin grew up working on a horse ranch, and has always had a great passion for horses. He has competed in many Trainers’ Challenges including the 2011, 2012 and 2014 at the BV Exhibition as well as 2010 and 2011 at the Rafter G Challenge in Fort St John. He put in solid performances in them all including winning the 2014 Trainer of the North Challenge, and is a crowd favourite.
Cory McAllister Cory specializes in colt-starting and horsemanship. His program is geared toward the development of performance horses for all disciplines. He comes from three generations of horsemanship and western trainers on his father’s side. His motto of “focus the mind and the rest is a cinch” guides every step of his training program, and is designed to establish a trusting and clear communication between horse and handler.
Kade Mills Kade began home schooling at fifteen to train horses full time with his dad, Doug Mills. Since then he has trained on his own all over Canada, the US and Europe. He has started colts for renowned quarter horse breeders in both Canada and the US. His favourite accomplishment was the 2011 Trainers Challenge Championships, in both the Red Deer and Chilliwack Mane Event Expos.
Hall Division What’s “In The Air” in the Johnstone and Davidson Halls for 2015? There are many changes in all divisions in 2015. Here are some highlights: In baking, to keep up with the latest trends, we have included a section for GLUTEN FREE entries. Nature’s Pantry has also changed it up this year. They’ve provided ALMOND BUTTER to the aspiring bakers and challenged them to create a cookie recipe using Almond Butter. And of course, there’s a huge selection of cakes, cookies, brownies and other mouth-watering goodies to inspire you! Chalk painting has been added to the Handicrafts division. Entries include a “before” picture so you can check out newly chalk-painted item as well as its undecorated former self! Lego is always popular with the kids in the Boys’ & Girls’ Hobbies. We have listened to suggestions

from the public and are having all the Lego creations judged by an experienced Lego Master! Come and check out these entries from Valley kids – and don’t forget, these are not kits, it’s all up to the ingenuity of the creators! In Division B, Special competitions: The BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions have sponsored competitions in three categories. There’s the ever popular infinity scarf, an 8x10 colour photograph of “birds in flight”, or a handmade wood birdhouse – which again are all made from scratch, not from kits. The “Looking Back in Time” display this year features Old Hand Tools – do you remember your dad using these? – or perhaps you still have a few around yourself! The quilting division has been updated with new terminology and classes to align with Canadian Standards, and for the creative quilter we have added a class for “art quilts” and a class for “modern

quilts”. Come and check out these gloriously colourful creations – absolutely works of art! It’s always a wonderful experience to see what the bakers, artists and crafters around the Valley can come up with every year. Hats off to those who keep the grand tradition of home crafts alive!
