Helping hands closed, building could be slated for demolition

The former Scout Hall, used as a facility for ‘Helping Hands’, a place where the public could pick up clothing or small household items for the price of a small donation, could be slated for demolition.

Rimbey’s interim CAO Donna Tona said the building and its contents could be destroyed, pending the results of a fire inspection.

Tona said several issues regarding the safety of the building came to light last month during a routine safety inspection.

“It is too bad, it is a good service for the community, but it is in such bad shape. We are not blaming anybody.”

Joan Fenwick, who ran Helping Hands with the assistance of other volunteers, is still in shock about the immediate order to evacuate the building.

“They just came in and told us we had to leave and to grab our personal things. They didn’t even introduce themselves. I think they were rude.”

Tona, however, refuted that claim, noting the inspection is on videotape.

“Any serious incursions into a building where we have concerns for safety are video taped through our enforcement services as they have jurisdiction for closing down a building.

She agreed everyone was asked to leave immediately.

However, she said the reason why the evacuation was necessary was carefully explained.

“All parties within the building were asked to leave and

explained to multiple times that the building was deemed unsafe.”

Tona said the inspection crew found that the emergency lights were not working, the emergency door was padlocked shut and the town did not have a key for the lock.

Fire extinguishers were not working and the furnace room was filled with combustibles. Mold was discovered downstairs.

“For the safety of those inside we asked them to take their personal effects and please leave immediately and we sealed the building. We’re bound by law to shut the premises down immediately when we find serious issues.”

Hazel Parker, who volunteered at Helping Hands said she feels sad the building has been closed.

“We helped a lot of people. People came from all over.”

She and Fenwick agreed the timing of the closure is especially difficult as school will be starting soon, and many families who were trying to make ends meet counted on Helping Hands to outfit their children.

Fenwick said she is not sure she would set up a similar service in another location.

“I have mixed feelings at this point.”

An inspection report from Alberta Health Services held on Aug. 10 confirmed that customers accessing the basement for items could be exposed to mold and contaminated material, creating a public health hazard.

The report also confirmed that items in the building were stored in a manner considered unsafe, emergency exit lights and smoke alarms were not working.

The report also stated eavestroughs were in disrepair

and could cause water to seep into the building.

An annual fire and safety inspection of the building was completed on July 28 by public works director Rick Schmidt, municipal interim Michael Fitzsimmons, town foreman Bruce Newbury and Sgt. Kyle Koller from protective services.

The crew found several deficiencies within the building including black mold on the basement walls, non-functioning emergency lights and exits and combustible items surrounding the furnace.

“After completing my inspection of the building, it was my opinion that we needed to vacate all patrons and staff immediately. It is my personal and professional opinion that this building is unsafe for both clients and staff to be in it at any time. It should be secured and further inspections by health and fire should e ordered,” said Newbury, in his report.

He noted support beams in the basement were either cut or removed.

“It appears that they were removed to make room for more items such as counters, toys, lamps and dishes. In my opinion, this is compromising the integrity of the structure in itself, which is a serious and dangerous situation for the clients and staff entering the basement at any given time.”

Newbury said the smell inside the building was also cause for concern.

In his draft report, Koller noted the building did not appear structurally sound with a cracked foundation.

The Scout Hall is a town owned building. The town pays the utilities and is responsible for upkeep and maintenance.

I did a three-kilometer run around Crimson Lake last Saturday with my daughters.

They called it a fun run and, actually, much to my surprise it totally was, especially when it was over!

It didn’t start off as much fun.

The steady drumbeat of falling rain I woke up to that morning watered the thought in my mind that the race may be cancelled.

Though I would, no doubt, maintain the façade of being sorely disappointed if that should happen, I knew inside, quite the opposite would be true.

Shopping. Coffee! Just hanging out. No need to exert myself in any way, shape or form, other than perhaps,

about a fun run. Still, it rained.

But, suddenly, when I had half run, half walked until my pink sparkly shoelaces were dragging in the mud, I saw through my squinty eyes, what looked like a blurry mirage.

The finish line.

I doubled my speed, which meant I had become super charged, blowing past the four-year-old and the guy with a cane, like I was made of greased lightning!

When I crossed the finish line my girls were there, on the sidelines, cheering and clapping.

They even snapped my picture and, as I was to find out later, tagged me on Face book. In the photo I looked kind of like the ‘before’ picture of someone who was

having a very bad hair day, but still my face is stretched into an amazing grin that clearly spelled one word.

Happy!

And later as we sat around having coffee and doing all the cool things I had fantasized about earlier, my girls mentioned that going on a fun run is so much more ‘fun’ that just running on your own.

And they wondered why.

I wondered as well, as I sipped my latte and munched on this meltin-your-mouth delicious scone.

“I think it’s the people,” I ventured, finally. “I mean they don’t say, ‘you are only doing the three kilometer?

What’s wrong with you?

Look at all those real run-

ners in the 10 K.’ No! They smile and cheer you on and even when people pass you on the trail they are very polite. ‘Excuse me,’ they say as they jog past. They don’t say stuff like ‘hurry up, get out of my way, or even worse, ‘that’s as fast as you can go?’

And in the end when you cross the finish line and everyone is clapping you do feel like some sort of wonderful super hero!”

I feel the gaze of two pair of summer sky blue eyes on me as I finish the last of my scone and drain my latte.

“Let’s go, super hero,” my youngest daughter says.

“Yes, we have shopping to do,” her sister adds.

And, so ended the prologue of the fun run!

Educational institutes operate with a business plan in place

walking slowly back and forth to and from change rooms at dress shops I have been known to frequent.

I allowed myself the luxury of fantasizing of spending such a morning while I drank my coffee, but before I knew it my daughter threw me a raincoat and, in her best teacher-like voice, said, “Lets go, we don’t want to be late.”

I zipped my thoughts into a waterproof compartment in my mind, shrugged into the oversized raincoat and resolutely tied the pink, sparkly shoelaces of my runners into an oversized bow.

I was ready!

At the beginning, my girls kept pace with me, but finally, slightly bored with listening to my labored breathing and watching my own particular version of a very slow run, they forged on ahead.

I was so grateful. Now I only had to keep up to a little four-year-old and a guy walking with a cane.

I squinted my eyes through the raindrops wishing my glasses had little windshield wipers on the lenses so I would know for absolute certain I was not running in circles.

I ran. It rained. I half walked, half ran, trying to remember what was fun

There is tuition fees, the cost of textbooks, material fees while in a trade program, and many more expenses attached to the price tag of attending Red Deer College. And while a student is there, Starbucks and Tim Horton’s have outlets, the book store charges outlandish prices for a HB

#2 pencil, and there is a conveniently placed pub that charges premium rates for a glass of draft beer. The Red Deer College, like every other post-secondary educational institute, isn’t only a school, a college, or a university — it’s a profitable business.

The students at RDC have options to join different societies if desired.

Some of these societies or student groups include: the Creative Writing Society and the Psych. Society, among many others. These student groups are not free from the pains of capitalism. Different societies do different functions to raise funds for their activities.

I’ve saw bake sales, used books sales, clothing sales,

and other methods used as a way for these student societies to generate money.

These little student groups become small businesses to continue on.

I know that the United States has different options for post-secondary student life — sororities (hands up for anyone that has watched the film Animal House).

Aside from all the infamous sorority stereotypes, these student houses are nothing more than simple businesses.

I did nothing to resist the urge to watch the University of Alabama’s sorority Alpha Phi’s 2015 promotional video on YouTube.

Had I not been on a motorcycle mission, I would have caught the original post on

the video sharing website.

But I was luckily enough to find one of the many reposts of the controversial Alpha Phi video.

Since the outbreak of the video and the AL.com article, there has been a surge of posts and columns on the Alabama University sorority. People on the internet do not need be so quick to shoot from the hip words like: feminism, sexuality, and homogeneous. The Alpha Phi video was essentially a television commercial for the all lady sorority — sex sells.

I took a moment from my regular internet wandering to investigate the Alpha Phi link through the University of Alabama’s website. There wasn’t much

for sorority postings, likely many have been removed due to all the recent negative hype. But I did find the “Constitution and Bylaws of the Alpha Phi International Fraternity, INC.” on the website. It wasn’t much of a surprise to me when I found an article within the Alpha Phi rule book on fees and dues. The Alabama Sorority needs to make money too and they do so from targeting pledges of a certain group — much like how advertisements before YouTube videos target certain audiences.

I think everyone upset over a clever sorority promotional video needs to calm down. Capitalism and sexuality will always sit in on the same sales meetings.

Town’s new MDP a work in progress

The Town of Rimbey is forging ahead with a new municipal development plan, which lays out a long-term vision for the town.

At its July 27 meeting, council decided not to go ahead with the current MDP. “It wasn’t written properly and doesn’t provide enough future for the town,” said interim CAO Donna Tona.

The town’s planner, Liz Armitage said the new plan may be in place by the end of the year.

“It is a vision that represents where we want to go from where we are today,” she said.

Armitage will work with council and town staff to finalize the new plan. Once the

details are in draft form, an open house will be held so public input can be received.

Armitage, who is a registered professional planner based out of Calgary owns and operates Vicinia Planning and Engagement Standards.

She is contracted by the town to help with planning issues on an as needed basis.

Originally from Camrose area, Armitage said she loves rural Alberta and working with small towns such as Rimbey.

“I love working with the staff and council. I’m having lots of fun. I love the rural lifestyle,” she said.

As well as long term planning, Armitage helps administration deal with daily issues such as applications for development permits.

Horticultural and bench show held last weekend at Drop In Centre

Fruits, vegetables, baking, preserving, thread arts, miscellaneous crafts and photography were all part of this year’s horticultural and bench show.

The show, sponsored by the Rimbey & District Horticultural Group, was held Aug. 14 and 15 at the Rimbey Drop-in Centre.

“Considering the ups and downs of the weather this year, our show was a success story with lots of exhibits from many talented adults and children and youth,” said president, Gail Hood. “We were pleased to see so many entries from children and youth this year.”

With a score of 230, Joy Bruca was awarded the most horticuture points and she also tied with Kathy Sarson for the most points in show in the adult category. Bruca also won in the adult best vegetables category.

“Her exhibits were outstanding,” said Hood.

Bruca grows her flowers and vegetables from seed.

Over the years she has come to learn where and when

to plant and how to coax stubborn seeds into becoming healthy, prize winning plants.

She doesn’t have a greenhouse, but starts her plants in the window of her home.

“For the light,” she explains.

“I was a gardener in the Philippines as well,” she said in an earlier interview, adding somewhat shyly that she also won prizes there for her plants and flowers.

Bruca comes by her love of gardening honestly.

“My mother just loved her flowers,” she recalled fondly. “My mother grew beautiful orchids.”

As she shows off the rows of vegetables in her garden, Bruca explains what type they are and the conditions needed for them to realize their full potential.

Bruca said she gives much of her garden produce to her friends.

“It’s my recreation, my pastime and I share it with people; share with my friends.”

She admits her garden has never failed. continued on page 7

REFEREE The RMH or Rimbey Minor Hockey Association, is looking for officials to referee youth hockey games in Rimbey in the coming 2015-2016 season.

All referees need to be certified to Hockey Canada standards, a Level 1 clinic in order to be certified is mandatory.

You must register on-line prior to arriving to the clinic.

Clinic Date: September 13th, 2015 Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Includes both an on-ice and off-ice session.

Where: Peter Lougheed Multi-plex (Lions Meeting Room) What to bring: pen, skates, CSA helmet w/ half shield visor is necessary in order to go onto the ice. All Level 1officials must go on the ice.

As per usual, all Level 1 and NEW officials will be required to complete the Hockey University course prior to the clinic date.

If the Rimbey date does not work for an individual an alternative clinic in the Zone 4 Region can be taken, alternate dates will be on the RMH or Hockey Alberta website.

Over the past two weeks the Rimbey RCMP have responded to and proactively investigated 86 occurrences, including: vehicle theft, domestic violence, break and enters, and drunk driving.

Report Impaired Drivers The R.I.D. Campaign is working well in Rimbey.

R.I.D. stands for Report Impaired Drivers. You may have seen the signs as you enter Rimbey, and the posters around town that encourage the public to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. The RCMP received three calls in the past couple of weeks from the public concerned over driving patterns they witnessed. One of these calls led to criminal charges.

In the afternoon of August 12, a 52-year-old female from Edmonton was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a mo-

tor vehicle following a tip from the public. Apparently she had run out of liquor, so she drove herself to the liquor store to replenish her supply. The Mounties caught up with her on the road and observed signs of impairment. When the male investigator asked the driver if she had been drinking, she replied in her most convincing lie, “No ma’am”.

Some people believe that after a few drinks others appear more attractive, but that was ridiculous.

Videos don’t lie A local business owner captured video of a female and a male breaking into his property, and he provided the video to the RCMP. The guys at the detachment were having some trouble identifying the perpetrators.

That is until a Saskatchewan driver's license of a 23-year-old female was found at the scene of the crime. The female suspect on the video and the photo on the ID matched quite well. This same person was charged in Rimbey a few months ago for drugs and weapons offences and one of the conditions she was placed on was to not return to Rimbey. Well, she came back. Now that this offender’s ID was known, the police just had to locate her to bring her to justice. The RCMP was in the process of applying for a warrant when they received a phone call from a stranded traveller requesting assistance.

Yes, this young lady was back in town.

She had gotten into an argument with her travelling partner who dropped her off on the side of the highway. With no one else to call, she phoned 911 for assistance. The local Mounties were happy to assist the damsel in distress.

Not only was she charged with break & enter and theft, but she earned new charges for being in possession of a stolen cheque.

The RCMP appreciates any and all tips from the public to help them solve crime. It is not every day that the tips come from the criminals

On Canada Day, my cousin and his wife invited me to go for a drive out west to the Meadow Vale district to re-kindle some old memories.

His roots run deep in that community, as do mine. Although he moved away at an early age, his dad, aunts and uncles all attended Meadow Vale School. His moms parents and her siblings had all been residents of the district. I started Grade 1 in the school and lived there almost fifty years.

So as our points of interest eventually led us to the school, our day took on a much more sombre note.

No longer were we able to get inside, as I, and many others had done over the years, and as Janet and her brother Tom did, to recall school days with siblings and classmates, to relive the special times.

Aside from being our school, it was the centre of entertainment for the neighborhood. The highlight of the year was the Christmas concert. In the summer the school picnic marked the end of the term. It was a place where funerals were held as well as bridal showers and wedding dances.

Regular dances were held there and the community had its own musicians.

The Browns, Carsons, Henry McAreavy and Norman Schauer were regulars in my memory.

What a wonderful time we had that day, but sadly we observed first hand, just how the Meadow Vale School was going to meet its demise.

Rachel Peacock receives music award

Rachel Peacock, a gifted flautist and harpist, who graduated from the music program at Red Deer College, is one of 12 recipients of a prestigious music award.

Peacock received the

Fred Sherratt Award July 20 at a special event in Toronto hosted by Canada’s music education charity MusiCounts.

While enrolled in Red Deer College, the young musician played in the college’s Chamber Choir, Flute Ensemble and Symphonic

Winds.

Peacock, who graduated from the music diploma program at Red Deer College, is working at Rosebud Theatre this summer, playing the flute and harp for the play, The Wizard of Oz. In the future, she has plans to move to Toronto

The annual award began in 2008 in partnership with Bee Media. It is named in honour of broadcasting pioneer Fred Sherratt.

When Craig Oliver stopped in at the town office to buy a business license for his company Amazing Ideas Cloud Computing, Inc., he discovered council wanted to explore rebranding options.

The discovery led him to talk to the town officials about his company and how he could work with them achieve this goal.

Council was receptive to the suggestions and also agreed to revamp the town’s website.

“We’re going with the new style of website,” he said. “It will be more interactive and visible on any screen.’

Oliver and his partner, who is based in Mexico, plan to offer seminars regarding Cloud Computing this fall.

Oliver moved to Rimbey in March and lives here with his daughters, Nicole, 17 and Natasha, 16. Both girls attend Rimbey High School.

“We just love it here,” he said. “It’s a great town.”

Exploring the feasibility of developing a downtown Rimbey website and carrying out a rebranding activity for Rimbey have been long-term goals for council.

The Central Alberta Buccaneers kicked off in Airdrie against the 2015 expansion team, the Irish, in the last week of regular season AFL play. While the outcome of the game would not affect either team’s playoff situation (the Bucs locked up third place with a win against the St. Albert Stars and the Irish did not qualify), both teams were determined to win. For the Irish (2-5), it was their last chance to play before the offseason; for the Bucs (5-2), it was a chance to improve and gain momentum before the playoffs.

From the opening whistle, the Bucs were in a battle they didn’t expect from the down-but-not-yet-out Irish.

For the majority of the first quarter, it was a tied ball game at 7-7. Pascal Plante hauled in the lone Bucs TD with a few nifty moves and a long 70-yard sprint into the Irish end zone (his second in as many games). The pirates would finish the first half with a moderate lead, sitting at 18-8.

While the Bucs were able to make some dynamic and opportunistic plays in the second half, it was (yet again) penalties that were their Achilles’ heel. It seemed that every time the Bucs made an outstanding play, an orange flag was somewhere to be found on the turf. “We will not win games with how many penalty yards we are racking up each game,” said defensive back Layton Johnson.

Runningback Tanner Green added: “we need to work on staying focused and coming out of the gate working as a united team. We don’t have a lack of great athletes by any means; it’s the mental errors that get us.” As a result of these errors, the Bucs scoring trickled to a halt. Before they knew it, the Irish had tied the game at 18-18 with a few minutes left. It would be veteran cornerback Tylor Johnson who made the game-winning play when he intercepted a stray Irish pass and ran it into the end zone.

The Bucs won their final regular season game 25-18, finishing with a 6-2 record.

Despite penalty woes, “there were a lot of positives to be taken away from the game,” said rookie receiver Hunter Gooderham. “Special Teams made some big plays and turnovers. Both the offense and defense had big plays, showing a glimpse of what we are truly capable of.” These glimpses of potential are what the Bucs hope to embody when they kickoff against the Edmonton Stallions in the quarter-finals. “With a couple solid practices and with our heads on right, we will come home with another W,” said Green. The Bucs hosted the Stallions, August 22 at 6 p.m. at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park.

In addition to the game, both the Irish and the Bucs raised pledges for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in their first annual “Real Men Wear Pink” game.

While the Bucs were the victors on the football field, they came in second to the Irish on pledge forms (Bucs raised $250 and the Irish raised $1,000). As a result, the Buccaneer team chairman will wear pink for a day at work.

BENNIK 1937-2015 Wilma (Weening) Bennik of Rimbey, passed into Glory to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at the age of 78.

Wilma will be remembered and missed by her loving husband Joe of 59 years, her children Sy (Grace)Bennik of Rimbey, Audrey (Peter) de Klerk of Calgary, Joanne (Cor) Bouwsema of Calgary and Carolyn (James) Vanderhoek of Bentley, 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, one sister and four brothers (and spouses) of Calgary and area. Wilma was pre-deceased by her infant grandson Benjamin Vanderhoek in 1987.

A celebration of Wilma’s life was held on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Rimbey Christian Reformed Church.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, caregivers, family and friends for their wonderful care, support and prayers during her battle with cancer.

Splash park closed this year

Town council has washed its hands of the splash park, at least for this year, though the matter will be discussed during budget deliberations.

Due to continual breakdowns and leakage, Cindy Bowie, director of community services said the splash park would not open this year.

She said repeated attempts to repair the park have failed.

“It’s leaking. We were all ready to go, but then it started leaking again. Every year it is something new. Council had to decide if they wanted to keep spending money on top of money. The last four years issue with the park has been ongoing. Every year there is a new problem.”

Bowie said legal action against Western Recreation, the Manitoba based company who installed the spray park is being considered.

“We have tried to get them out here, but they have decided they are not talking to us,” she said.

Bowie said she is in the process of talking to other companies to discuss the possibility of rebuilding the park.

“It will go to the budget process in the fall.”

Lower harvest losses start with a drop pan To make an improvement on canola harvest losses, it first helps to know the current loss situation. That requires a drop pan.

We know canola losses occur out the back of the combine. Are losses high enough to warrant the time spent to reduce them? They certainly will be for some combines and in some conditions.

“Combines could be throwing over 5 bu./ac. and growers may not even realize it because those seeds are so difficult to see once they hit the ground,” says Angela Brackenreed, agronomy specialist for the Canola Council of Canada.

“A pan is the best way to see these losses.”

Growers have a few pan options; there are pros and cons to every style, but any one of them is better than not measuring at all. They can buy or build a one-footsquare pan to mount on a stick held under the back of the combine. Deep sides will limit seed bounce out of the pan. They can toss a wide flat pan under the combine as it goes by. Or they can buy a more elaborate pan that attaches to the belly of the combine and can be dropped from the cab. The advantage with this pan is that the combine operator can also measure harvest losses. Brackenreed bought one of these to try out this fall.

“It works off an electromagnet bolted to the underside of the combine. It runs off the cigarette lighter receptacle in the cab, and to drop the pan you just unplug the cord,” she says.

The first step when using any style ofpan is to disengage the chaff spreader and straw chopper and move them out of the way.

This allows straw, chaff and thrown-over seeds to drop straight down over the pan.

Once the combine is fully engaged and working through a typical stretch of crop, drop the pan. When using the pan on a stick, move the pan into position upside down so it doesn’t gather any losses ahead of time. Then quickly flip it over and stop walking.

This procedure provides the same result as throwing the pan.

Calculate the loss based on one square foot. If the pan is two square feet, for example, divide the weight or volume by two to get the total for one square foot.

Here are a few scenarios: • If the cut width (straight cut or swathed) is 30 feet, the combine’s discharge width is five feet, and the canola seed loss per square foot is five grams, the yield loss out the back of the combine is 1.5-2 bu./ac.

• If the loss for that same combine is 10 grams per square foot, the yield loss is over 3 bu./ac.

• If the same combine has a 40 foot header and the

drop pan has 10 grams per square foot, the yield loss is closer to 2.5 bu./ ac.

Small Bentley club hosts another ringer horseshoe event

There were five classes of competition for the singles play at the Bentley Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, August 8 and five teams played in doubles play on Sunday, August 9 — a decent turnout when compared with other tournaments around the province so far this year.

The weather turned out to be hot and dry so the sand courts were watered down to prevent horseshoes from sliding too far — extra work for the small crew hosting the event.

On Saturday morning the first round of players started out playing in the sun but for the afternoon players moved onto courts that were more shaded. Lots of drinking water that had been supplied by Sunny 94 was consumed.

The name of the winner of each class is engraved on the John Talsma Memorial perpetual club trophy.

The top three finishers in each of the “Singles” classes on Saturday are listed below.

40-foot-men: Steve Moody from Wetaskiwin who only lost one game got first and second was Bruce Grandel from Calgary with a 3-3 record. Kevin Cuthbert from Calgary placed third.

Mixed A: Lyle Olmstead from Claresholm never lost a game. Tammy Christensen from Regina was second with a 3-3 record. Myrna Kissick from Innisfail placed third.

Mixed B: Bill Hinds from Alsike had to win in playoffs after a three-way tie and Matt Coninx from Innisfail, who lost out in the final playoff, ended up second. Charlie Whatley from Innisfail, who was also part of the three-way tie, placed third.

Mixed C - Stuart Little from Innisfail never lost a game in his class and Noel Peterson from Ponoka only lost one. Con Taks from Innisfail lost two.

Mixed D: Esther Hoerle from Innisfail won all five of her games and junior boy Brayden Christensen from Regina had a 3-2 record. Placing third was Dave Hynne from Edmonton.

A potluck supper followed after the presentations.

The 2015 recipient of the Allan Boettger Memorial V.I.P. Award, started in 2011, was Tammy Christensen from Regina. It was such an honor as she had been

coached and mentored by Allan. Allan’s wife Pearl Boettger had daughter Sharon Schrauwen from Red Deer make the draw. Allan’s sister Hazel Heistad from Lacombe was also present.

With additional funding from the Bentley & District Ag Society and other generous sponsors and donors, Bentley remains one of the best paying regular Alberta Horseshoe Pitchers Association tournaments on the circuit.
