Hot weather accelerates growing season

Long stretches of hot, dry weather mean that crops have been ripening faster than ever before in the Alberni Valley KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It’s not even the end of August but the growing season at Nash Dhaliwal’s blueberry farm on Ship Creek Road is wrapping up.

“We started on June 25,” said Dhaliwal.

“We never pick this early, it’s the first time.”

The last week of July is a more typical start time, he said.

“After July 20, most times.”

But then in the past two years he’s started earlier and earlier.

“Two years ago we started on July 15 and last year we started on July 10,” Dhaliwal said, adding that starting in June is unprecendented.

“It’s too hot, too dry.”

Green berries first started to appear in April.

“That was early too,” he said. It’s the long stretches of hot weather with no break that ripen the blueberries so quickly, said Dhaliwal.

“The berries were ripe so quick.”

“It’s been 11 years with just me and 10 years with a [business] partner,” he said.

“He was doing sales and I’d look after the farm.”

These days Dhaliwal

does it all with the help of his wife Seva, his daughter Ruby and a crew of pickers, some of them from far away as New Zealand.

Two varieties of blueberries grow on Dhaliwal’s four-acre farm; blue crop and northland. He sells

them both on the farm and at local markets like Naesgaards, where his crops haven’t been the only ones to come in early.

“Everything’s been starting earlier,” said Naesgaard’s Market manager Chris Naesgaard.

“It’s been a month or two weeks earlier so everything’s finishing earlier.”

There are some benefits to the earlier growing season, Naesgaard said.

“Strawberries will just keep on growing while the heat holds,” he said, leading to more strawberries.

It’s not just Alberni Valley crops coming in early, said Naesgaard.

The market sources its crops from all over Vancouver Island and the rest of B.C. and everything has come in earlier than usual.

Crops coming in early isn’t the only issue, said Dhaliwal.

A dry, hot summer with no rain can mean that keeping

crops well watered is an impossible task.

Fortunately, Dhaliwal’s farm borders Cox Lake “These are irrigation pipes all the way down to [the lake],” he said.

“I have a pump there. I was lucky I have water here so I water every second day,” he said.

But while Dhaliwal is lucky that he has the lake, he worries about how low it is.

“This is low,” he said.

“It’s worrying. This winter there was no snow. On Arrowsmith, there’s nothing.”

He worries about what will happen if this is the new normal.

“Last year we had

not very much snow and this year even less,” said Dhaliwal.

The hot dry weather has had a negative impact on some crops, according to Naesgaard.

“Some things were tougher to grow than others, like the ones that are shallow crops, because it was so hot,” Naesgaard said.

“Beets or dillweed... we had difficulty with dillweed. It was a little tougher on those kinds of things.”

Back at his blueberry farm, Dhaliwal wonders about how much worse it will get.

“If we don’t get any snow next year... who knows.”

2015 was the hottest on record since Environment Canada began taking them at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport.

With an average

temperature of 26.7 degrees Celcius, this June had the highest average temperature since 1993.

It’s not the first month to hit record

high average temperatures either— May was also the hottest month by almost two degrees since 1995.

And it’s not just

the average that’s highest this June. The temperature hit 36.6 degrees Celcius on June 27—the highest the mercury has ever climbed in June since

1993.

July wasn’t much better.

With an average temperature of 27.9 degrees Celcius, 2015 had the third hottest

With back to school time upon us in the Alberni Valley, Staples is making sure that every student has what they need to succeed this year.

“We try and raise as much money as we can and then I work with the school district to buy the supplies that the kids that can’t afford them need to make sure that every kid has the opportunity to be successful in their school year,” said Port Alberni Staples general manager Nicole Mitchell.

“We take donations at the till.”

The Staples staff also get in on the fundraising.

“The staff does Jeans Day so we pay

$2 on Fridays to wear jeans and we donate that money.”

The whole community, from local service clubs to business, has been helping out, Mitchell added.

“Local businesses donate prizes that we’re silent auctioning off, so if somebody doesn’t just want to do a straight donation they can come in and bid on an awesome prize,” Mitchell said.

“We’ve had some really good participation this year from the local businesses.”

While people may be tempted to buy school supplies to donate themselves, Mitchell says that Staples can make your dollar go further.

With B.C. not renewing the Mars’ contract, Coulson is looking down south for more work.

“I have been in contact with the Incident Command team members in Washington state offering the Mars up

as a resource,” he said.

“However the aircraft in [the] state have been grounded due to smoke over the last couple of days and [so we] will stay in contact.”

2016 Community Investment Program (CIP) (Formerly Grants-in-Aid) Orientation Workshop For those organizations and local non-profit groups that did not attend the Orientation Workshop in May 2015, an additional Workshop has been scheduled for September 2, 2015.

The Hawaii Mars will not have its contract renewed by the province, according to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations “We appreciate the assistance of the Mars and its crews during this busy fire season,” said MFLNRO public affairs officer Greig Bethel. “[The] B.C. Wildfire Service has reviewed the anticipated weather over the next while, as well as expected requirements, and doesn’t believe it will need the Mars at this time.”

The province had originally signed a $450,000 30-day deal with the Coulson Group for the use of the Hawaii Mars back on July 8. Each hour flight time also cost the province $11,000 in fuel and flight costs.

The agreement came with the option to extend for another 30 days, which the province has not taken.

Due to health issues of one of the Mars’ flight crew as well as a training contract between Coulson and the International Test Pilot School, the contract was

extended till Aug. 25.

“The Hawaii Mars reliability, serviceability and performance for the past 40 days has been perfect and is a testament to our team and the people that worked in the Mars program for the last five decades achieving excellence in aviation, firefighting and safety,” said Coulson Group CEO Wayne Coulson.

“What an honor it is on behalf of our company to serve the Province of B.C.

and support the hard working men and women firefighters that tackle the fire line every day.”

Despite having been parked for 22 months, Coulson said that only two days of crew training were needed – Wayne before the Mars spent 40 days in flight with no issues.

“This is not an

outdated unreliable aircraft flying 70 flight hours in 40 days between the province and the Chinese government contract,” said Coulson.

Out of the 70 hours, 22 were taken up by the Chinese government contract according Coulson to the flight school.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, “the Martin Mars flew

The City of Port Alberni invites local non-profit groups and organizations to attend an Orientation Workshop on the 2016 Community Investment Program. Too hot not to have a debate Is B.C. really burning? Not exactly Kim Campbell was infamously quoted (or misquoted) as saying that a 47-day election was no time to discuss serious issues.

Fortunately, we are in the early days of an election campaign that is almost twice that long, and will stretch on into late October. It’s also unusual to have an election campaign during the height of summer, when the weather is often top of mind. So let’s have a debate about global warming. Not whether or not it exists, which has been thoroughly established. There is a worldwide scientific consensus, and every major political party accepts that it is happening. There is also ample anecdotal evidence in the form of temperature records that have fallen by the score across B.C. We also have the raging wildfires and water restrictions – though not as severely here as in other regions – to show us what global warming will mean for us on a local level. We need to determine what the best course of action is towards change. There are dozens of options, including changing the way we generate power, increasing energy efficiency and changes in urban planning.

Depending on how we choose to proceed, we could find ourselves in a future with electric cars springing up everywhere, and with solar farms popping up across the Prairies, or we could pioneer a new generation of safe nuclear power projects, or we could simply concentrate on using less energy and using what we do create more efficiently. Any of those options are better than our current course, which is barely better than nothing. Our major opposition parties may be willing to attack the government on the environment, but they are still following rather than leading the debates on energy and climate change.

As usual, it’s up to Canadians to push for the changes we need in Ottawa.

n a recent drive through the B.C. Interior, I passed through McLure and Barriere, communities north of Kamloops that were devastated by wildfire in 2003.

While these communities have recovered, blackened tree trunks are still visible where fires burned for 75 days and forced the evacuation of 3,800 people.

With the early start to this year’s fire season, the media attention and effects of an unusual spring drought, you might think that B.C. is on pace to match that terrible summer.

You would be wrong. As of last week, area burned and money spent by the B.C. Wildfire Service had only just exceeded the totals for mid-August during last summer’s fire season, which were high but not remarkable.

The number of individual

fires is higher this year, but that’s mostly a result of lightning storm patterns.

Spending has topped $200 million, as it did last year at this time before finishing just below $300 million.

The 2003 total was above $400 million, and the 2009 season was slightly below that.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson cautions that there are still many weeks to go and hot, dry conditions are expected for much of that.

Once the damage is done for the year, the ministry reviews the impact on forests and begins assessment of which areas should be replanted and which should be left to regenerate naturally.

Pine forests need fire to regenerate, and the strategy in recent years has been to allow fires to burn out naturally and contain them to protect people and property.

Decades of fire suppression, based on viewing Crown forests strictly as a timber resource, helped create conditions for the beetle epidemic that has left vast quantities of dead wood to fuel more fires.

The 2003 fire season set the tone for political debate on forest fire policy that has continued since then.

premier Gary Filmon that removing fuel from around communities is the best protection.

This task has proven impossibly big, especially as rural community tax bases shrink, but the ideological dance continues in Victoria.

The NDP campaigned in 2013 on a promise to double tree planting, and its general approach is to spend more money and hire more staff.

Speaking of political dances, Premier Christy Clark has made a couple of appearances at fire sites where homes and businesses have been threatened or destroyed.

(Today’s big-city media formula is to emphasize danger and promote attacks on premiers of all stripes.

If they don’t visit disasters, they are callous and uncaring. If they do, they’re exploiting the situation for photo ops.)

In her first fire scene appearance this summer, Clark warned that drought and huge fires may be “the new normal” for B.C. as climate warms and shifts.

Fires not as bad as portrayed From / A8 This is great positioning for the government’s plan to attend the latest global climate doom festival in Paris this fall, but it’s not borne out by recent forest fire results.

In terms of dollars spent and area burned, the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 were all well below average.

Last year and 2009 were substantially above average, but 2008 and 2013 were among the quietest years on record. Is drought the “new

normal” too? The B.C. government’s own climate change forecast is for increasing overall precipitation, albeit with more rain and less snow. Snowpacks for southern B.C. were indeed the lowest on record this past winter, but that record only goes back 31 years.

And when were high snowfall records last broken? That would be 2011.

As a person, I’ve always been a strong advocate for freedom of expression and speech. I have supported and always will support any initiative promoting equality.

On the subject brought forward to council regarding instructing city staff to look further into the matter of promoting equality, I’m still in full support.

But on the issue of making any changes to pedestrian or traffic control signage being on the roadway or posted .... I am not in support.

Changing colours otuside of the formatted way already prescribed by the Motor Vehicle Branch is to me throwing caution into the air.

Being a police officer for over 27 yes and having attended too many accidents, I for one am well aware of the consequences caused by pedestrian or vehicle distractions.

I feel that changing any colour or design format of any pedestrian crosswalk can be proven to

be a safety issue.

Crosswalk insignia is well known nationwide and may cause some confusion to drivers.

I’m confident that the uptown merchants committee, after reviewing this initiative, will come up with a more suitable way to promote equality.

Just because other cities have already endorsed the initiative does not make it safe enough for our travellers.

I would also strongly suggest seeking advice from the local police and Motor Vehicle Branch. The issue should also be addressed by the traffic advisory committee of Port Alberni.

Recession is like a drought To the Editor,

When there’s a drought, people understand the longterm implications but still need to be prodded into cutting back on their water consumption. Most

people do it willingly and a few cheat. But none of us expect the restrictions to be lifted until the reservoirs are once again filled to a prudent level.

Where does this collective common sense go when there’s an election? Canada is teetering on the edge of a recession and the global economy is facing what could be called an economic drought.

Our politicians, even the arrogant ones who preach fiscal restraint and rant against government handouts, are tossing around expensive election promises as if they are empty water bottles and then claiming only their party has the magic necessary to create the rain to fill them.

Some voters, who hope to get something for nothing, flock to the party promising the biggest bottles.

We could blame the politicians for their charlatan-like behaviour; however, they are merely pandering to the wants, wishes and whims of the voters.

Apparently many of us hate the thought of having to live within our means.

Recession is like a drought To the Editor,

First there was Christmas in July, as Conservatives crisscrossed the country with pre-election goodies; followed by a 78-day campaign with all the political parties making soon-to-be-broken promises of what to expect in return for voting for them. A similar gift-giving and festive season caused Ebenezer Scrooge’s hallucinations, and must have triggered my own recent dream about ghosts of politicians past, present and future.

Of course, nothing is real, and there’s nothing to get hung about in Dreamland, it’s all a magical mystery tour. I found myself overlooking a room with former United States president Richard Nixon and White House henchmen, John Ehrlichman and H.R. Haldeman, sitting across a table from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and P.M.O. chiefs-of-staff past and present Nigel Wright and Ray Novak. Although 40 years separated these two groups, they had so much in common discussing political

cover-ups.

The election campaign was almost over, and this was a farewell bonding trip to visit the last resting place of Captain Franklin’s ships. The mood was sombre, as the Duffy Trial revelations had taken a huge toll, and poll predictions were for a Kim Campbell-sized two-seater caucus, meaning all these Tory parliamentarians would soon be unemployed.

As fate would have it in my dream, an iceberg suddenly appeared dead ahead out of the October gloom; the vessel was badly damaged and began taking on water. Thankfully, all on board were saved; in typical Dreamland fashion, in a blink of an eye, the PM and his cabinet were spirited away to the GovernorGeneral’s residence of Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

They arrived late on election eve and all were sworn in as Senators to fill those 22 vacant seats; seems though they would lose the election, they intended to retain power and stymie legislation sent to the Red Chamber by the next elected government.

It was still dark when the sound of feet crunching on the beach woke us. When daylight came we looked out of the window to see a long line of fishermen spaced all along the shoreline - the fish were biting and it was an incredible sight. It must have been like that when Jesus walked along the shores of Lake Galilee. The life of Jesus Christ revolved around fishing in many ways. Many of the disciples God chose were fishermen. Simon, Andrew, James and John are named in Mark 1:16-20.

Most people who love to fish realize that success depends on a whole lot of things. First of all, there need to be fish to catch, and then you need the right equipment, license and bait. You also need a lot of patience and practice.

Little children seem to be able to catch fish with a safety pin for a hook—but not us grown folks Jesus knew that these were the qualities that he would need to help him in his ministry.

God prepares everything we need in life. Just as the fish have the opportunity to take the lure or not, God gives us the opportunity to except what he offers us. So next time the fisherman come crunching along the beach before daylight, it is great to know that God is indeed the Great Fisherman.

According to the ACRD, the grantsin-aid program was established “to assist local non-profit organizations that provide a benefit to one or more electoral areas in the region or

[to] the entire regional district.

In 2015, the money was distributed between 27 different organizations.

Groups receiving funding ranged from West Coast Aquatic receiving $17,000,

School day mornings can be hectic, as getting kids ready for school and out the door on time is not always easy. Working parents may nd school day mornings especially difficult, as their own work schedules can make mornings feel even more rushed. Fortunately, parents can employ several strategies to free up time in the morning so everyone starts their days off in a more relaxing atmosphere.

Kids who fall into the latter group may drag their feet in the morning, but parents should offer encouragement when kids are moving slowly in the morning. Allowing your frustration to show may only make kids less fond of mornings, so remind them as nicely as possible that everyone has a schedule to stick to if they seem to be dragging their feet.

· Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but waking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from weekday mornings without costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal wakeup time, using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to shower or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz with activity.

· Keep the television off. If watching the television is ingrained in your morning routine, try going a few days without it to see if this makes it easier to get out the door on time. Kids might grow distracted by morning cartoons, and even adults may get caught up in morning news shows or other forecasts. Eliminating television from your morning routine can save time and also may help your family grow closer, as you will have more distraction-free time to speak to one another. In addition to turning off the television, resist the urge to turn on your devices or scan work emails when getting ready in the morning.

· Tackle certain chores the night before.

Prepare school lunches, lay clothes out for yourself and your children, and make sure kids have their backpacks packed and ready to go before they go to bed. Each of these things may only take a few minutes, but when left for the morning, they can add up to a substantial amount of time. · Encourage youngsters to pick up the pace. Some people are morning people,

Teach kids to ride safely

Share these safety tip with your students before they board the bus this school season. Alberni Valley bus schedules are posted on the school district website at www.sd70.bc.ca • Get to the bus stop 5 to 10 minutes prior to the assigned pickup time.

• Remain on the sidewalk or grass at the bus stop. Do not step off the curb into the street until the bus is completely stopped.

• When boarding the bus, go directly to a seat and sit down. * Remain seated while the bus is in motion.

• Keep voices low so as not to distract the driver.

• Keep your head and hands inside of the bus.

• Do not throw things on the bus or play rough with friends or classmates.

• Keep the aisle clear at all times.

• Be careful when getting off the bus. Hold on while going down the stairs.

• Only get off at your designated stop.

• Wait for the driver to give you a signal that it is safe to cross. Be sure to check that all cars on the road have come to a complete stop.

• Get to the sidewalk or off the street as quickly as possible.

• If you’ve forgotten something on the bus, do not run back and attempt to retrieve it. Rather, call the bus company and pick it up at another time.

• Do not get into the cars of strangers waiting around bus stops, even if they offer to take you home.

The Rotary Golf Fore Kids Tournament held on Saturday at the Hollies was a fundraiser for Kidsport and Young Professionals of the Alberni Valley for their bike rack project. The next art exhibit begins Sept. 22 and will run until Oct. 17 featuring Port Alberni’s very own AV Photo Club. This group show will have a broad range of local photographs, by this talented group of photographers, amateur and professional. The Pool Mural Project will have its official unveiling to the public, Wed. Sept.

Current art exhibit

Titled “My View of Nature Close Up and Away” this exquisite art exhibit is currently on at the Rollin Art Centre’s Gallery until Sept. 19, featuring watercolour artist Judi Pedder.

Judi is showcasing her collection of flower portraits and landscapes.

Watercolour painting class

This class is meant for adults who are interested in learning the basics of watercolour painting; beginning with monochromatic (one colour) painting to two colour and then onto multicolour paintings proceeding in a step-by-step fashion so that each technique is understood before we move onto the next.

We will paint a variety of subjects from still life to landscape culminating in an optional subject for the last class. The pace of this class will be relaxed so that each person can proceed at their own speed.

MARIE LOUISE STONE July 2, 1922 – August 13, 2015 Louise passed away peacefully at Fir Park Village after a long and healthy life. Louise was born in Oldham, England to Annie and Edward Jackson.

She is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Douglas E. Stone; parents Annie Louisa and Edward Jackson and a niece Elizabeth Zubko; cousins and other relatives in Wales and England.

She is survived by her children: daughter Faye (Peter) Beyer; grandchildren Peter (Nicole) Beyer; great grandchildren Rebecca, Tyson, and Joshua Beyer; daughter Judy (Bob) Rieder; granddaughter Melissa (Lenny) Von Harrach; great grandchildren Felix, Caspar, Leo Von Harrach; grandsons Eric (Jen) and Andrew Rieder; son Doug (Mirriam) Stone; granddaughter Malaika; granddaughter Kathy (Joe) Kalugin; great grandchildren Joseph Kalugin, great granddaughter Sarah (Michael) Messanger; great-great granddaughter Neila Marie Messanger; step great granddaughter Tasha; step great-great grandchildren Jaden and Nathan; nieces Sandra (John) Smith, Roberta Bogle, and Patricia Green.

Louise was blessed with a happy, healthy life up until four years ago. As a young child, she travelled with her parents all across Britain as her father was a violinist and conductor. When she was 8 years old her parents immigrated to Canada and Louise stayed with her favorite Aunt and Uncle in England; and for two years she had a wonderful time with her aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. When her parents were settled in Vancouver; Louise came to Canada on the ship Alania where she met a lovely family with two young girls. They became friends and were full of mischief. She was ill when she landed in Halifax, but after that it was clear sailing until four years ago.

Louise was a seamstress by trade and during the war sewed uniforms, tents, etc. She met Doug at a Halloween party at the Church and they were married Jan 31, 1942. After the war they moved backed to Port Alberni where Doug went to work for his father and uncle at Stone Brothers Towing Ltd. Doug Jr. is still employed at Pacific Towing; Mum was in the Hospital Auxiliary; was a great cook, gardener, seamstress and loved being at their cabin at Sproat Lake.

We want to thank her niece Sandra for all her visits. Mom did enjoy them. We would also like to thank the staff at Fir Park Village for all the very caring, compassionate care she received there.

There will be no service at Louise’s request.

A family gathering will be held at a later date.

WILLIAMS Wayne Walden WILLIAMS, Wayne Walden passed away in Port Alberni on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at the age of 74.

Predeceased by parents, aunts, uncle and a brother in law, Wayne is survived by his loving wife Linda of 40 years as well as many family and friends.

Wayne was born in Manitoba but came to the valley in 1964. He was a log scaler for 20 years until his retirement.

An active man who loved being in the outdoors, he enjoyed golfing, camping, snowmobiling, traveling south in the winter in the motorhome, and was a founding member of Sproat Lake Water Sports Assn for 35 years. Wayne was known for his talent on building and manufacturing things and having a sharp mind that could come up with solutions to most problems. He invented a Bear Clamp Spray Handle to help those still working in the scaling industry.

According to Wayne’s wishes, no formal service will be taking place. A Celebration of Wayne’s life will be announced at a later time. DERRYL E. MATTHEWS October 1940 – August 2015 Derryl passed away peacefully with his wife by his side. He was predeceased by his parents Ted and Ada Matthews, brother-in-law Paul Clemmer and sister-in-law Diane Kramer. He is survived by his family: his wife Norma, sons Shane (Anne), Len (Shelley), Paul (Karen), Gene (Sandra); grandchildren Kristyna (Matt), Kaitlyn, Robert, Nicholas, Jacob, Austin, Daniel, Makayla, Jordan and Jenna; great grandchildren Vylett and Koen; and siblings, brothers: Dennis (Clarene) and Gordon (Ronnie) and sister Faye Salisbury, as well as many nieces & nephews and mother-in-law Eileen Throndson.

Derryl was born in Nanaimo, BC, living at Nanoose, BC for 2 years before the family moved to Port Alberni, BC and resided there until his passing. He spent his entire working life at the Somass Mill and enjoyed challenging himself to learn the jobs of Trimming, Edging and his dream job as Headsawyer which he did when Hival opened.

Derryl liked fishing, camping, vacations to Alberta, and playing both the piano and accordion.

Derryl’s family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Nell, the Home Support Nurses and the staff at Westhaven Care for all the kindness and care he was shown. You have been a big part of our lives. Special thanks to family and friends for being there for us.

The celebration of Derryl’s life will be held at Jericho Road Church (old Klitsa School), 5100 Tebo Ave., Port Alberni, BC at 11:00 on Saturday, August 29, 2015.

On the international stage, Margo was the captain of Team Canada’s U20 Roller Hockey team in the summer of 2014, winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Toulouse, France.

“I’m excited for this opportunity as it’s an honor to be named captain of the Bulldogs,” said Margo.

“We are poised to do great things this year and I can’t wait to get the season started,” added Margo.

Main camp opened on Monday, Aug. 24 with daily scrimmages at the Alberni Valley Multiplex from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. until Thursday, Aug. 27.

The main camp is open to the public leading up to the annual red and white game on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6pm where admission is by donation of a nonperishable food item in support of The Bread of Life.
