CEO for the 2019 Canada Winter Games gets to work Scott Robinson is excited about the opportunity for Central Alberta

he recently named chief executive officer of the 2019 Canada Winter Games has officially taken his post.

Scott Robinson was selected from 33 applicants and began his work with the organization last week. Robinson joins the Games team following 23 years with Hockey Alberta, including 10 years as executive director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation.

A Red Deer resident for more than two decades, Robinson was actively involved with the Red Deer Bid Committee as well as the Transition Team that was working with the Canada Winter Games Council and the City of Red Deer to transition from a Bid Committee to a Host Society.

“It’s very exciting. I have been in sport for a long time and Red Deer is my home and to have an opportunity to lead a project like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said. “I feel very fortunate and honoured to be chosen and I’m excited about the opportunity we have as a community in front of us.

“We have such a strong group of volunteers with the Board. They are a fantastic group to work with – so much knowledge and so much experience and commitment to this community that it is very exciting as an individual to get the opportunity to work with people like that.”

Robinson said his first order of business will be to establish the base for the organization including getting a new home base next month at the old Central School location in downtown Red Deer. Currently the 2019 Canada Winter Games office is being housed at the Recreation Centre.

“I’m coming in now and I’m going to take over some of the operational things,” he said, adding the organization is also working on its vision for the Games.

Lyn Radford, chair of the 2019 Canada Winter Games Board, said the organization is excited to have Robinson on board.

“The 2019 Canada Winter Games Society feels very fortunate to get someone with the passion and knowledge of our community to lead the operations of these Games.

Scott will make sure all the ‘T’s’ are crossed and ‘I’s’ dotted to ensure that the vision and mission of the board is met,” she said. “When our community welcomes over 25,000 participants in February 2019, his team will be ready and we as a community will feel a swell of pride that will be second to none experienced.”

The Board will be approving its governance plan at a meeting set for next month.

The City is managing that for us, but we definitely have a seat at the table with those projects. Between the City and the College, it’s getting pretty exciting.”

Robinson added having been to several Canada Games, the Central Alberta community probably doesn’t quite realize what is coming yet. “It’s a very, very big event.

It will be our Vancouver 2010 and our Calgary ’88 – it is that size of an event and it will have that kind of impact on the community, both from a legacy point of view and a community spirit and engagement point of view,” he said. “I think that is one of the most exciting parts of it. Obviously, we’ll have a great Games for the athletes and it will be very exciting to watch their performances – but what we’re also going to have is a community engagement opportunity that we’ve never seen here certainly for a long time.”

Robinson said he is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“The scale of the Games creates huge challenges and the speed by which it has to come together creates huge challenges.

But the reality is that we have great people in this community and they are going to be a big part of making sure it all happens.”

Looking ahead, Radford said about 100 committees will be formed prior to the 2019 Canada Winter Games and there will be many opportunities for the community to get involved. “There will be about 40 big committees and then another 40-50 subcommittees as well. There are so many little details that people don’t realize,” said Radford.

In total, about 5,000-6,000 volunteers will be needed for the Games.

“It’s a lot of people and one of the major areas of the Games is to manage that size of a volunteer network and training, preparation and outfitting. It becomes a big part of the Games,” said Robinson.

“Red Deer is hosting the Games, but it is about Central Alberta and Alberta. We will have people applying to be a part of this event from all over Alberta. The com-

munities around us will be very engaged and we want them to be very involved. We want to create a Central Alberta feel to the Games and an Alberta feel. “Alberta gets to host these Games once every 25 years so it is a unique opportunity and we encourage people to want to be a part of it.”

When the Canada Winter Games takes place in Red Deer in February 2019 the City will see about 3,600 athletes compete, along with 1,800 coaches over the two-week event. Robinson said in total there will be about 25,000 to 30,000 people who attend the Games in some capacity.

It is anticipated the region will see an economic impact from the Games of between $100 million and $125 million.

In addition, it was nearly a year ago that Red Deer was named the host community for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and Radford said excitement within Central Alberta continues to be strong.

“The community spirit for the Games hasn’t dampened at all and if anything it continues to heighten,” said Radford. “I’m so looking forward to 2019 because this City is going to be rocking.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Food Bank staff working towards ‘Kitchen Project’

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express In addition to the regular duties of providing immediate assistance of food for those in need, Red Deer Food Bank Society staff members are still attempting to get their Kitchen Project up and running.

The Kitchen Project is an initiative within the Society to bring an industrial style kitchen facility into the Red Deer Food Bank in order to host educational programs in addition to current services.

This project would also allow the catering and barbecue crew – the main fundraising source for the Society – their own space to engage in more events.

“There are community kitchens that exist in our community which are wonderful organizations that do very well. We believe

offering this program here at the food bank, where people are coming already and where they know us and we know them, is very important,” said executive director of the Society, Fred Scaife.

“We will be able to earn almost a third of our annual operating budget with that kitchen here, because it helps our barbecuing and catering crew. We’ve done a number of weddings this year and other events – we’re not just restricted to barbeques. We’ve done full meal service for weddings and things like that.

There is good money to be made there for us, because we can get a lot of that food donated.”

“I think it’s imperative that we use the resources we have to raise our own money. There are a lot of charities that don’t have the ability in the regard that we do. Earning our own money is a huge benefit to having that kitchen here.

“Money isn’t coming in as fast as it could but we’ve got enough food to last well into the next food drive.”

The Red Deer Food Bank is also an asset to nearby communities.

Through the Reclaimed Goods Program, the Red Deer Food Bank Society takes food from grocery stores that is close to expiry, imperfectly packaged and sometimes perfectly new, and is able to bring that food to the community.

“A flat of soup with 12 cans on it – if it comes into a grocery store and one of the cans has a dent on it, they don’t even bother putting it out. That whole flat then goes into the Reclaimed Goods Program,

and comes to us. So there’s one can with a dent and 11 perfectly good cans,” explained Scaife.

When the facility receives a surplus of a specific items, they contact a number of neighbouring food banks to distribute the excess.

“Recently, we received 7,000 lbs of cheese in assorted forms, and immediately when we received that we contacted a number of smaller, surrounding food banks – Lacombe, Blackfalds, Innisfail, Rocky Mountain House, Ponoka.

All of them came in and took a portion to give it to their clients,” Scaife said.

“When we get an opportunity to do something like that at the food bank, when we’re able to give them something that they may not be able to afford, that makes us feel really, really good.”

approximately a 22,000 sq. km. radius.

It includes communities from Rocky Mountain House east to Stettler and from Olds to just south of Wetaskiwin.

“That program works tremendously for us. Not only is it a benefit to our clients, but when you consider that we deal with almost 800,000 lbs. of goods through that program – that’s a tremendous environmental savings because most of those goods would have been thrown out if not for the program,” Scaife said.

“That program is fantastic and really helps. It’s something that clients can access with little or no trouble at all.

“We are also very lucky to have the generous citizens of Red Deer. In my 18 years here I am always amazed at how the community can respond when we put out a plea for something.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION Canada Winter Games planning fuels momentum It’s hard to believe that it was nearly one year ago that Red Deerians learned our City would be hosting the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

So much careful and detailed planning had gone on in making the bid prior to that exciting announcement in Calgary last September, and once it was official, it was like things were elevated to a whole new level in terms of planning what promises to be a tremendous, groundbreaking event for Red Deer.

It’s also been interesting to watch further plans comes to fruition, with the naming of area residents to various boards and committees. Each new announcement is a reminder of the sheer magnitude of this amazing event, and how much organizers will also be counting on the community to help out as volunteers when the time comes as well.

One of the key milestones along the way came with the announcement of the chief executive officer of the 2019 Canada Winter Games - Scott Robinson. In this week’s

edition of the Express, we highlight Robinson as he begins to delve into his new post.

Robinson was selected from 33 applicants and began his work with the organization last week.

He joins the Games team following 23 years with Hockey Alberta, including 10 years as executive director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation.

Robinson is also a long-time Red Deer resident, having called the City home for more than two decades. And he’s been part of the process in bringing the Games to Red Deer essentially from the start – he was actively involved with the Red Deer Bid Committee as well as the Transition Team that was working with the Canada Winter Games Council and the City of Red Deer to transition from a Bid Committee to a Host Society.

As mentioned, seeing the outstanding team members come together has brought the Games to the forefront of residents’ minds once again.

It may seem like a long ways off at this

point, but there is already a palpable excitement building, and much of that will also stem from the formation of groups of volunteers that will be needed to help ensure the Games run as smoothly as possible.

As has been seen in past major sporting events in Red Deer, there is nothing quite like bringing together enormous groups of people to lend a helping hand towards a common cause that can really pull a community together.

Red Deerians are fortunate of course to not only have landed the privilege of hosting these Games, but also to have the chance to work together to help bring them to fruition.

It’s been noted countless times in the past in the wake of major events like this that really, they just wouldn’t have been nearly the successes they were without a foundation of dedicated volunteers taking care of a myriad of roles and responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Robinson said he is looking

The opportunity to host these Games comes to the province every 20 years – the last time Alberta had the opportunity was 1995 when Grande Prairie was selected. In 1975, the honours went to Lethbridge.

It’s also anticipated the region will see an economic impact from the Games of between $100 million and $125 million.

Premier Kathleen Wynne is playing a dangerous game Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has jumped directly into the federal election campaign with her aggressive campaigning in support of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and by taking shots not only at Prime Minister Stephen Harper but Tom Mulcair as well.

Her strategy, however, is a neither winning strategy nor in Ontario’s best longterm interests. If this is Wynne’s idea it indicates a lack of judgment in dealing with the business of running Ontario; if it emanates from her political advisors, it may be time to acquire a more balanced team.

On the surface, Kathleen Wynne’s approach may seem understandable, given Harper’s perceived lack of support for her agenda when it comes to federal transfers, infrastructure,

DI MATTEO pensions, and energy and environmental policy.

Trudeau’s policy positions seem to be most in sync with Wynne’s vision of Ontario.

But recent polls show a tight three-way race between the Conservatives, NDP and Liberals, with much of the Conservative strength in Ontario’s GTA. Wynne undoubtedly believes she can derail the Conservative vote in the GTA and direct it towards the Liberals, thereby cementing support for her

political agenda.

Unfortunately, Wynne’s overtly activist support for Trudeau ignores the reality that, as Premier, she governs on behalf of Ontario’s long-term economic and business interests rather than any short-term advantage or political agenda.

By putting all her eggs in Trudeau’s basket, Wynne is undermining her future relationship with whomever is elected Prime Minister if Trudeau is defeated, as well as with other provincial premiers who represent an assortment of political views. Wynne’s support for Trudeau could also very well be a two-edged sword.

She and her advisors seem oblivious to the fact that Ontario voters have historically been inclined to send opposite parties to represent them at Queen’s

Park and Ottawa. Her support may not necessarily translate into votes for Trudeau given the economic mess Ontario is currently in, its uncompetitive economy, its high electricity prices and its large debt and deficit. Throw in the potential for civil service strife this fall and Trudeau may very well have to publically ditch Wynne in an attempt to save his own campaign, making for some political embarrassment for Wynne.

Wynne’s behaviour also harms the federal nature of Canada. Canadian provincial premiers have generally seemed to prefer a federal government with the power to observe but not intervene in provincial affairs – unless of course the intervention involves sending federal cash with

no strings attached.

As the leader of Canada’s largest province and largest electoral battleground, Wynne’s activist and overt campaign on behalf of Trudeau has introduced a new dynamic into the federal system that hopefully will not set a precedent.

While Harper has not been Mr. Congeniality when it comes to dealing with the provinces and federal provincial matters, Wynne’s strategy also introduces a potentially negative dynamic into federalprovincial affairs. Should Trudeau win, his authority on federal-provincial matters will be weakened, given that many premiers may view him as Ontario’s ‘kept’ politician because of his debt to Wynne.

Finally, there is the unbecoming behaviour of a

provincial politician actively campaigning in a federal election. One can only imagine the howls of outrage in the provinces if prime ministers start to take it upon themselves to start actively campaigning in provincial elections to ensure more favourable outcomes. Ontario’s economy has suffered from over a decade of weak economic and productivity growth, which has in turn fed into poor fiscal performance.

Wynne should be running the province, not campaigning. The ‘Wynning’ strategy to address Ontario’s long-term concerns should be trying to fix the economy rather than fix the federal election.

Tools for School counts on community support

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A project between the Women’s Outreach Centre and United Way of Central Alberta which aims to collect and distribute schools supplies for families across Central Alberta who could not afford their own materials is seeing higher than average demand this year.

Last year the Tools for School program gave out almost 1,600 backpacks filled with basic schools supplies for children in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Darcy Ouellet, fund development office at Women’s Outreach, said he expects to see the program far surpass the 1,600 mark this fall and edge close to 2,000 with backpacks currently flying off the shelves.

Ouellet worries the program will not have enough backpacks and supplies to fill the needs of children in the area this year and has invited the community to help support the program by donating high demand items.

“Backpacks are our biggest expense,” explained Ouellet. “Last year we cleaned out Walmart and Staples from everything they had at the end of September because that’s when the really good deals are.

“We thought we were doing pretty well but last week we ran out of backpacks,” he said.

Following their dwindled supply of backpacks, Ouellet put out a call to the community via social media and saw a number of local businesses step forward to help gather over 200 backpacks for the program.

“I wasn’t expecting these huge donations, but the community has heard we were in need and they really stepped up to help out,” he said.

“Prior to these big few gifts we were extremely low on donations this year,” he said. “The demand is higher, but the donations are lower due to the economy

we are in.”

Ouellet explained depending on the make of the backpack they could range anywhere from $10 to $80, meaning on average it will cost $60 to $70 per child for school supplies.

He added they often see families with anywhere from one up to 10 children.

“It can be like Christmastime in a way – if you have a family living paycheque to paycheque and who has three or four children, where do you come up with an extra $300 for school supplies?

“So something is going to suffer - they’re going to get further behind on paying for things and it just takes them longer to catch up, so if we can help them then that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

The Tools for School program provides four different types of backpacks geared towards students in pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten, Grades 1-5, 6-9, and 10-12 with each age group containing different items in accordance with school supply lists.

While backpacks are currently in the highest demand, other items include binders, crayons, dividers, glue sticks, markers, pencil cases, scissors, highlights, duo tangs, rulers, pencils, pens, coil scribblers, loose leaf paper and erasers.

Ouellet explained Tools for Schools is one of the programs not in the Outreach Centre’s budget and one they do not receive funding for.

“So if we don’t get donations, we don’t have backpacks to hand out.”

NDP candidates selected for local ridings

Hart, who has lived in Central Alberta his entire life, spent the last 40 years of his career working as a nurse, teacher and community college administrator.

He currently works as a casual nurse in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and Addictions at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, following time spent as both the vice academic chair and acting president at Grande Prairie Regional College.

of Alberta Bachelor of Science graduate who served in a number of local political positions over the years including serving as a town councilor for Lacombe for a time, as well as the MP for Wetaskawin.

Harris, chosen candidate for the NDP nomination in the Red Deer – Mountain View riding is a local business owner, City councilor, and was described by other members during the meeting as an influential community leader.

Harris was elected to Red Deer City Council in 2010 and has owned Sunworks since 1995.

During his time on council he has also been an active member of the Red Deer & District Community Foundation, sat as a chair of the Cultural Development Association of Red Deer, as well as serving as president of the Downtown Business Association.

He has also been a member of the Mayor’s Task Force to End Homelessness.

“I was really just focused on tonight and today and getting to this point,” said Harris following the announcement he was to be the riding’s NDP candidate.

“The next 56 days are going to be very busy – we’re going to be in every community in our riding and really get people out to vote in Red Deer,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure everyone is participating and make sure everyone is engaged in democracy on a local and national level.”

Harris added it’s nice to have the support of the party and a team of committed individuals behind him and Hart during the federal election.

Harris will be running against the current MP for the riding, Conservative MP Earl Dreeshen. He will also be running against Green Party candidate Mason Sisson and Libertarian candidate James Walper.

The election is set for Oct.19th. Harper dropped the write on Aug. 2nd and at 11 weeks, the campaign has been described as the longest in modern Canadian history.

The 1867 campaign lasted 81 days, while the 1872 campaign went for 96 days. At that time, voting was staggered over the country for a period of several months. The longest race in recent history was a 74-day campaign back in 1926. As a result of the 2012 federal electoral redistribution, the number of electoral districts was increased to 338, with additional seats based on population assigned to Alberta (6), British Columbia (6), Ontario (15), and Quebec (3).

Meanwhile, officials here in Red Deer said both Harris and Hart would be kicking off their formal campaigns as official NDP candidates today with a canvassing blitz, “Involving dozens of volunteers and NDP MLAs from across the province joining us here in Red Deer,” according to a release.

A look back at the lives of ‘the surveyors’ Amongst the hardiest early pioneers in the Canadian west are a group who are often overlooked in the early stories of this part of the world. That group is the surveyors. They are famously quoted as being, “The last people to see Canada first,” since they were among the very last to see the land as it appeared in its original raw state. These men travelled into often unknown country.

They were forced, by the nature of their work, to travel in straight lines across all kinds of terrain, regardless of the obstacles in front of them. They had to drag equipment with them. They also often had to haul a season’s worth of supplies as they did not have the time to hunt for game to support themselves. They worked from dawn to dusk, often for seven days a week, through bogs and muskegs, raging rivers and creeks and seemingly impenetrable forests.

At other times, they might have to work across hot dry prairie grasslands, with very little shade or drinkable water, save what they might find in the occasional alkaline slough.

During the spring and fall work, they could face sudden snowstorms and bonechilling cold snaps.

The first survey group to work in Central Alberta was a party headed

by Montague Aldous. He was from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His chief assistant was Charles Alexander Magrath, later the first mayor of Lethbridge after whom Mayor Magrath Drive is named.

Aldous and his crew ran the Fifth Meridian, the main division line west of Red Deer, all the way south to the Waterton Lakes.

He was very impressed by the land he saw near the Red Deer River. He referred to it as a ‘particularly fertile belt’ with a ‘rich black loam.’

Aldous visited Central Alberta during a relatively wet year. He therefore found the Red Deer River to be a robust stream.

He wrote that, “I have never heard of there being any rapids or other impediments to navigation between this point and its confluence with the South Saskatchewan.

“I am of the opinion that steamers such as run up to Edmonton will, in the fu-

DAWE ture, navigate at least as far up as this point.”

Unfortunately, while Montague Aldous was correct about the richness of the soil in this part of Alberta, he was wrong about the Red Deer River. In most years, there was not enough water in the stream for a steamboat to be able to use it as a transportation route. Nevertheless, Aldous’s reports soon had an impact on the Red Deer area. Three young surveyors, George Beatty, James Beatty and William Hazelwood Kemp, liked the prospects of the district. Hence, in the late summer of 1882, they decided to establish homesteads, near the Calgary-Edmonton Trail and a short distance upstream of the Red Deer Crossing (an all-weather ford across the Red Deer River).

They erected a pole shack with a sod roof as their first home. However, they must have soon wondered if they had made the right decision.

The morning after their shack was finished in September 1882, they awoke to find more than 60 cm (24 inches) of wet snow on the ground. Despite this unpleasant turn of weather, they decided to stay and establish their farms.

The next surveyor to work in the area was Thomas Kains of St. Thomas, Ontario. In the early spring of 1883, his crew started to map out the Tenth Base Line as well as some of the township lines.

Like Aldous, he reported that the area was, “A magnificent stretch of partially wooded country, with a rich black loam soil.”

He also made note of the rudimentary farms of the Beatty’s, Kemp and a few other hardy settlers. He reported, “There is quite a settlement in this township.”

Nevertheless, Kains faced hardships which would have made him, and the others in the district, question if this was a great potential agricultural heartland. The weather had turned dry. The smoke from the forest fires to the

west was so dense that some days the surveyors had trouble seeing their survey rods through their transits. Worse, the smoke reduced the temperatures considerably. In mid-July, Kains and his men woke up to white frost on the ground. Moreover, there was a skim of ice in his wash basin. The land was a paradise, but the weather could challenge, “All manner of men and beast.”

It is a priority for citizens, City council and the RCMP, ofďŹ cials have said. “We will create a safer community by being proactive, consulting with the community and stakeholders, and setting the right objectives based on statistics and our knowledge about what is happening in and around Red Deer,â€? said Tod. Along with the APP update, second quarter crime statistics were released,

aligning with the release of the ďŹ rst quarter APP report slated for April, May and June 2015.

In the second quarter of 2015, overall crime in Red Deer decreased by nearly 6%.

The biggest decrease in the second quarter was in the area of crimes against persons which decreased 14% compared to the same time last year.

Total property crimes decreased by nearly 2% in the second quarter compared to the same time in 2014. Offenses related to death however were up in the second quarter – last year there were no offenses related to death reported, while this year so far there has been one. Robbery offenses have also risen in the second quarter compared with last year with 27 reported robberies so far this year, compared to 22 in 2014. As well, kidnapping/ hostage/abduction offenses have also increased with 11 reported incidents in the second quarter, compared to eight this time last year. “Crime prevention and community safety continues to be a priority for the City,� said City Manager Craig Curtis. “Through our Safety Charter, we will continue to invest in and set meaningful targets that will result in a Red Deer where citizens continue to feel they are safe and have a good quality of life.� efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Masquerade Ministries event to examine issue of domestic abuse

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express A local ministry offering hope to those affected by domestic abuse is marking its third anniversary with a special event Sept. 11th.

‘Unmasked’ will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The evening begins with a silent auction followed by music, a message from guest speaker Justin Flunder and the ministry’s founders Tiffany and Roy Mitton.

For the past 10 years, Flunder has developed as a specialist in interpersonal communication and practical leadership delivery, according to his web site.

As a professional teacher/speaker/ coach and leadership author, Flunder is also known for delivering educational, entertaining and interactive keynotes, workshops and seminars, and experiential coaching programs which take people from “inspiration to application”.

Afterwards, folks can join in Masquerade Ministries’ anniversary celebration hosted by Dora from the first season and Christmas special of Master Chef.

Organizers say the focus of ‘Unmasked’ is to raise awareness of the prevalence of domestic abuse, to show it’s happening in the some of the lives of those we know and love, and to show how Masquerade Ministries can help.

Masquerade Ministries is a non-profit organization that offers freedom from domestic abuse through hope and grace by reaching out to men who have hurt the ones they love and supporting those who

have been affected by domestic abuse.

The Mittons describe it as a community of people journeying through the realities of domestic abuse together through three core services – ‘Peace Makers’ for men who abuse and are taking responsibility for it; ‘When Home Hurts’ which is a support and empowerment group for women who have been affected by domestic abuse and ‘Faith, Family and Violence’ – a workshop that aims to equip people to understand and identify the dynamics of domestic abuse.

Roy and Tiffany come from a unique place in terms of the ministry, in that Roy said he has found freedom from the abusive ways that the ministry seeks to end.

“Now, finding both the freedom and healing necessary to move forward, they have dedicated their lives to helping others do the same,” notes a press release.

“Tiffany and I founded the ministry about six years ago,” explained Roy. “This year, we have grown so much in the last 12 months that we wanted to ‘unmask’ what we are doing.

“Really, it’s not about Roy and Tiffany the way it used to be – we were the story about domestic abuse and what can happen if it’s treated in a certain way.

“But there are so many stories. And this is something that is kept so in the dark.

When it’s happening, there is stigma that some people will hide it.

“Something that is often said is that domestic abuse is something that is born, thrives and lives in isolation.”

Roy also pointed out that domestic abuse touches virtually any sector of society. “It crosses every line that you can imagine,” he explained.

“And the second part is sometimes it doesn’t look the way you might think it would look.”

“SOMETHING THAT IS OFTEN SAID IS THAT DOMESTIC ABUSE IS SOMETHING THAT IS BORN, THRIVES AND LIVES IN ISOLATION.” ROY MITTON For example, abusers of course don’t always look like they would be ‘abusive’.

“We are also trying to put a face on those who are being controlled and hurt.”

As mentioned, part of what the Mittons do is offer help to abusers who are willing to take responsibility for their actions and are trying to change their behaviour.

“I lived in that until I was 33,” recalled Roy. “We need to reach out to them and offer hope.”

He describes domestic abuse as consisting in part of power, control and the sense of entitlement to carry those things out.

According to the Ministry, statistics show that one in four women will be abused by their intimate partner in the communities of Central Alberta.

According to the City of Red Deer, domestic violence can, “Include mental, physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse

by one partner toward his or her partner, their children, or the elderly and disabled.

Abusers may try to intimidate or control their victims by destroying personal property, withdrawing access to children or pets, or keeping victims from contact with friends or family.”

Obviously it’s a complicated issue, and Roy emphasizes that the ministry doesn’t claim to have all the answers.

But building awareness is critical, and promoting discussion is also a very important aspect in facing the issue as a whole, he added.

Roy said he and his wife first shared their story publically at CrossRoads Church. He was concerned the couple might be ostracized.

“You could hear a pin drop both times we spoke that day,” he recalled.

“It was about me accepting absolute responsibility for what I did, and saying that I did not have the entitlement to do these things.”

Over the years, support for the ministry has grown in the community as it reaches more and more people as well.

Roy said that the cycle of domestic abuse lies in that perpetrator who again and again and again destroys lives and families and moves on to the next one.

“Until we also reach out to that person and engage them to bring them in and get them the help they need, this will not end,” he said.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP NAB SPEEDERS Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services issued tickets to 11 speeders in the space of just over an hour last week on Riverside Drive.

Between approximately 3:30 and 4:40 p.m. on Aug. 19th, police were set up with handheld lasers to monitor southbound traffic in the 4700 block of Riverside Drive.

“The faster you’re driving, the harder it is to avoid sudden obstacles and the longer it takes you to stop.

That makes you that much more likely to cause serious injury or death to yourself or to those around you,” said Sgt. Al Nickolson of the Red Deer RCMP. “Speed limits exist for public safety reasons, and we are committed to targeting those who place the public in danger.”

RCMP also charged one person for not wearing a seatbelt, and issued a warning to a driver whose license plate was obscured, at which point the driver removed the cover.

As well as setting up campaigns in specific areas, Traffic Services patrol for driving violations in marked and unmarked police vehicles.

Members target distracted driving, seatbelt infractions, intersection violations, speeding and impaired driving, which have been identified as the most common – and dangerous – traffic issues in Red Deer.

YOUTH ARRESTED AFTER TRUCK AND BOAT THEFT A 17-year-old Red Deer youth faces a number of charges after attempting to flee from police with a stolen truck and boat the morning of Aug. 15th.

Red Deer RCMP received a report at 8:40 a.m. of a break and enter and theft in progress at a locked compound in the Chiles Industrial Park on Hwy. 2A. A black Ford truck was reportedly seen exiting the compound by smashing through the gate while towing a boat.

RCMP quickly located the suspect vehicle but the driver refused to stop when police activated their emergency equipment.

RCMP followed the truck to a dead end road in the area of Hwy. 11A, Hwy. 2A and RR 272, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Police officers and Police Dog Services located the suspect hiding on the grounds of one of the industrial businesses and took him into custody without further incident. The truck and boat had been stolen from neighbouring businesses in the industrial area.

POLICE ARREST DUO AFTER COLLISION Red Deer RCMP arrested a man and a woman after the stolen F350 they were in ran a red light on Taylor Drive last week and collided with another vehicle.

On Aug. 13th at around 7:30 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a collision at the intersection of Taylor Drive and Jewell Street involving a stolen white Ford F350 truck and a Jeep Cherokee.

The truck ran a red light, collided with the Jeep Cherokee and rolled.

The three occupants, two men and a woman, extricated themselves from the truck and ran from the scene into the Johnstone neighbourhood.

Witnesses tried to stop the three from getting away and one man suffered serious injuries, including a broken jaw, as a result of being assaulted by the driver of the truck.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was not injured in the collision.

The male and female passengers of the truck were located and arrested within a few blocks of the scene with the assistance of citizens who called in the suspect’s locations.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of RCMP officers, citizens and Police Dog Services, the male driver of the truck is still at large.

SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN ARMED ROBBERY Red Deer RCMP have obtained surveillance images of a suspect in the armed robbery that took place at the North Hill Inn VLT Lounge on Aug. 12th and are asking for public assistance to identify this man. Images of suspect number two are not available at this time.

Suspect one is described as a male, approximately 6’2” tall, 180 lbs with a thin build.

He had short brown hair above the ears, a pockmarked face and is in his 20s. He was carrying a shot gun and was wearing a face covering.

Suspect number two (no photos available) is described as a male, approximately 5’8” to 5’10” tall with a stocky build. He had short brown hair, and was wearing sunglasses as well as a face covering.

MAN CHARGED AFTER FLIGHT FROM POLICE An 18-year-old Red Deer man faces a number of charges after his attempt to avoid a check stop while driving a stolen truck ended in a foot chase.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on July 31st, Red Deer RCMP attended the McKenzie Trails area where a loud party was occurring and set up a check stop.

A black truck accelerated past a number of police vehicles, refusing to stop for their activated emergency equipment.

Members successfully deployed two tire deflation devices on the truck, which continued to flee police.

Police followed the truck as it drove at high speeds southbound on 45th Ave. on deflated tires, through residential areas then eastbound on Ross Street before coming to a stop near the intersection of Erickson Drive.

The driver and a passenger then fled on foot, separately running south into a

bushed area.

RCMP and Police Dog Services searched the area and located the driver, taking him into custody without further incident.

The passenger remains at large. The truck had been reported stolen out of Sylvan Lake on July 30th.

Logan Nottal, 18, of Red Deer has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, failing to comply with undertaking and three counts of failing to comply with undertaking as a youth.

RCMP INVESTIGATE THEFT OF FIREARMS Red Deer RCMP are investigating a residential break and enter in the Morrisroe neighbourhood last month in which a number of firearms were stolen.

At 10 a.m. on July 30th, RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter at a residence on Malcolm Close.

The homeowner returned home to discover that his gun safe had been unlocked and a number of firearms had been stolen.

The ammunition, which was stored separately, was not taken. Stolen items include a Mossberg 500 shotgun with tactical light, folding stock and carry strap; a 1941 SKS rifle with scope and bipod; a Kimber Pro Carry 2 handgun and a brown 12 gauge shotgun.

CITY BRIEFS TRANSIT SCHEDULE/ROUTE CHANGES

To better accommodate Red Deer Transit users, schedule and route changes are now in effect.

Starting this past weekend, the following changes took effect. Route 1 - schedule adjustments to the inbound times.

Route 7 - routing change in the Vanier and Lancaster areas, as well as schedule adjustments. Route 9 - routing change in the Lancaster area, as well as schedule adjustments and Route 10 has seen schedule adjustments to the inbound times.

Route 6 - routing and schedule changes with service to Garden Heights and Michener Extendicare have been added as well.

This route includes service from Clearview Ridge, Garden Heights and Timberlands to Lindsay Thurber High School. Route 6 buses will also operate Monday to Saturday only, with no Sunday or holiday service.

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT NAMED The Board of Trustees of the Red Deer Public School District has announced the appointment of Stu Henry as superintendent of schools.

Henry takes over from Piet Langstraat who is leaving the district to become superintendent of schools for the Greater Victoria School District in British Columbia.

Currently associate superintendent learning services, Henry has been an administrator with Red Deer Public Schools since he joined the district 10 years ago and has been a teacher and school administrator for 28 years.

“Stu is an exceptional and respected leader who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of superintendent,” said Board Chair Bev Manning.

“The Board considered options in selecting our next superintendent and unanimously felt that Mr. Henry will provide strong valued leadership to Red Deer Public while bringing continuity and stability to the district.”

Henry said it’s an honour for him to serve in this role and he appreciates the confidence the Board has demonstrated in him.

HOME SALES STRONG IN JULY Residential sales reported through the MLS® System of the Central Alberta REALTORS® Association numbered 509 units in July.

While this was a decline of 12.5% from a record for the month last year, sales in July marked just the third time on record that activity has topped the 500 mark for that month.

Sales activity in all of Alberta fell 14.7% from July of 2014, and were running in line with the five and 10-year averages for the month.

New residential listings on the Association’s MLS® System numbered 858 units in July, down 7.9% from levels in July 2014.

There were 2,955 active residential listings on the Association’s MLS® System at the end of July, down 5.4% from levels at the end of July 2014.

There were 5.8 months of inventory at the end of July 2015, up slightly from 5.4 months reported at the end of July 2014 but below the long-run average for this time of year.

The number of months of inventory is the number of months it would take to sell current inventories at the current rate of sales activity.

The dollar value of all home sales in July 2015 was $163.1 million, falling 7.9% from the record July in 2014.

This was still the second best dollar volume for the month of July. The dollar value of home sales in all of Alberta declined 14.9% from July 2014.

Sales of all types of properties totaled 529 units in July.

Expanded RCMP storage will be funded with $12,000 approved from the 2015 operating reserves.

Since the inception of Red Deer RCMP’s Joint Taskforce and ALERT teams, there is an increase in the amount of property seized, and therefore no longer adequate storage at the Red Deer RCMP detachment.

The approved funds will enable the RCMP to secure a storage site that ensures the property they seize is admissible in court and meets all federal requirements.

City council also approved $40,000 onetime funding towards resourcing for corporate security, which encompasses the review of existing City-owned sites and facilities as well as the implementation of security measures for new and renovated sites and facilities.

“The safety and security of our staff, patrons and citizens is a priority for us.

“With a number of facility revitalizations and renovations slated to take place over the next few years, we need to evaluate and implement appropriate security measures that scale whether we have 10 people or 200 people in a City facility,” said City Manager Craig Curtis.

“This becomes increasingly important as we plan and prepare to host more than 25,000 people during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.”

In addition, Council also approved $50,000 one-time funding for a Sustainable Energy – Technology Analysis, which enables administration to research and explore technology related to a renewable energy source.

“This investment in the exploration of district energy and environmentally sustainable technologies reconfirms Council’s commitment to the environment and the continued implementation of the Environmental Master Plan and Waste Management Master Plan,” said Curtis.

The project will be funded with $25,000 from the Land Development Reserve and $25,000 from the Landfill Rate Stabilization Reserve.

The projects and initiatives approved for funding through the 2015 Operating Reserves cannot be funded through taxation as the tax rate bylaw has already been passed, officials say.

ENTERTAINMENT Singers with rich, storytelling sensibilities in City Belle Plaine and Blake Berglund to launch collaborative disc

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Regina-based prairie sweethearts Belle Plaine and Blake Berglund are gearing up to release a country/folk music doublesingle, gold-toned vinyl record next month and are hitting the road to support the project. They perform Sept. 7th at Fratters.

The release beautifully pays homage to fellow Saskatchewan songwriter Zachary Lucky. The couple recorded two tracks from Lucky’s catalogue - Town to Town and Saskatchewan.

All copies of the limited edition vinyl are expected to sell during the tour, which covers western Canada. The singles will also be available via iTunes. The recordings were produced by former frontman of The Waltons Jason Plumb.

“Blake and I were in Kansas City in 2014 for an event called Folk Alliance International,” explains Plaine. “It gets people from all over North America together – it’s a showcase event, it’s a conference event – it’s an incredible thing to go to make connections with people from all over North America,” she explains. “And we found ourselves getting to know western Canadian musicians that we had heard of, or were just hearing of there.

“We were watching Zachary play – he’s so hardworking, he’s from Saskatoon, he’s prolific and so talented. I leaned over and said to Blake, we should be singing this song! We were just starting to sing together and we were writing together and we were looking for material that suited us.

“Saskatchewan is about being home, and Town to Town is about traveling and being all over the country.”

Berglund agrees. “It was fun to interpret his material because he is such a strong writer.”

Meanwhile, listening to Plaine and Berglund it’s very clear these two are such a natural, engaging blend in terms of their artistry. Both songs bubble over with a charming authenticity and warmth. Not to mention their work as individual artists, which continues to attract new fans and define them as noteworthy artist in their own right.

“It’s become something where I can jump in on a lot of Blake’s sets and sing back-up for him – so it’s been really good

for me as a musician,” explains Plaine of the collaboration.

“It’s been really great to see how another band works and also having such a positive experience from growing and learning.”

As for their live shows, Plaine and Berglund will each perform a set with their own sideplayers - Elizabeth Curry on bass and Jeremy Sauer on keys for Plaine and Bryce Lewis on guitar for Berglund.

To close each, the ensemble will come together for a selection of duets including Town to Town and Saskatchewan from the co-release, Kris Kristofferson’s Chase The Feeling, and Ian & Sylvia’s Summer Wages.

“We’ve become so integrated in each other’s writing processes, and our bands have become so integrated in each other’s songs, that it works really well,” explains Berglund.

Plaine agrees, adding that it really is structured around the overall flow and honouring the songs. “That’s how both of us work in constructing a set list – also thinking about the spaces between the songs and what kind of stories can be told,” she said. “For those two hours with an audience, you want that time to feel like it’s time they don’t even know is passing.

That’s at the heart of what we are doing.

That’s our objective – to give people something that takes them out of their own lives for a couple hours.”

Plaine has one of those gorgeous and extraordinarily rare voices that is pretty much instantly addictive. Over the years, her tunes have percolated with jazz, pop and old-fashioned country richness.

Raised in the farming community of Fosston, Saskatchewan, her distinctive sound draws on a wide-ranging musical background, including years of professional training (formal study at MacEwan University) and performances stretching back to her youth.

Her debut CD Notes From A Waitress earned the number three position on the earshot National Jazz Chart and number one on Edmonton, Ottawa and Lethbridge Jazz charts in early 2012.

At 18, she knew she wanted to write songs, perform and have a home recording studio. But when she moved to Edmonton to study jazz, her focus shifted toward a more technical aspect of music: sound recording. After graduation, she worked in a

Eager for change, she enrolled at the University of Victoria as an environmental science major. Having fallen in love with Victoria’s arts community she dropped out of school. In 2006, she returned to Saskatchewan and found a home in Regina’s arts community.

Berglund’s fresh style of country has been described as unpredictable, intelligent and genuine. His love for music stretches back to his younger days, as he recalls his grandfather always carrying a harmonica around with him.

Berglund also took piano lessons over his growing up years, and then eventually discovered the guitar. As mentioned, he went on to explore a number of genres before finding his niche in music that follows a country/folk sensibility. But Berglund, like Plaine, can’t be strictly categorized when it comes to style. That attribute in itself fuels their overall charm as outstanding artists who aren’t wary of continued sonic exploration.

He earned an Independent Music Award in 2010, was granted Rawlco Radio’s 10K20 Bursary in 2013 and was named Roots Artist of the Year at the 2013 Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards.

Berglund’s authentic songwriting and stage show also landed him showcasing opportunities at the 2012 Breakout West Festival, the 2012 Canadian Country Music Awards, and the 2013 Canadian Music Week Festival.

Meanwhile, Plumb, who again produced the latest project, speaks warmly about the pair. “I’ve been a fan of both Blake and Belle for quite some time,” he explained.

“After seeing their live performance, I couldn’t wait to get them in the studio together.”

Local author explores ancient journey in new novel

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express A local author has penned a richly imaginative novel exploring the experiences of ancient peoples who migrated to North and South America from the far reaches of such places as Siberia, Tibet and Mongolia.

Red Deerian Eelkje VanderMeulenSmart recalls through her school years how teachers would comment on her tendency to daydream during class. She couldn’t help it – she loved to think about all kinds of adventures and scenarios, and that ability to imagine turned out to be quite the gift when it came to creating an image-laden tale of discovery, adventure, pain and hope.

Written on Stone, which VanderMeulenSmart also describes as a novel of empowerment and a tribute to the human spirit, follows travelers as they encounter all kinds of experiences via their journey across ice corridors to reach the Bering land bridge to escape the last ice age. They travel south through North America, Central America and eventually to Tierra del Fuego – the ‘end of the earth’. As is noted on the book, “Along the way, they record their stories on stone so the account of their struggles will last throughout time.”

For VanderMeulen-Smart, mother to three sons, telling a story that requires much in the way of description came quite naturally.

“As a child I was kind of quiet, but I always really observed everything around me – people, places and things. So I started to paint and write at a very early age,” VanderMeulen-Smart recalls. “My dad always told me I should write for Hollywood because I had quite the imagination,” she added with a laugh.

VanderMeulen-Smart was born in Leeuwarden, Holland and moved to Alberta in the 1950s as young child. “After the Second World War, there wasn’t much work,” she recalls. The family initially settled in Edmonton but moved to Red Deer about a year after their arrival in Canada.

She eventually opted to further explore her creative side, and studied visual arts at Red Deer College and the University of

Alberta. “I wanted to take psychology, but it wasn’t fitting into my program – the only other course I could take was anthropology, so I did. I wasn’t really that happy about it but once it started, I did become quite interested in it. I was really amazed also by the origins of man into North America.”

“AS A CHILD I WAS KIND OF QUIET, BUT I ALWAYS REALLY OBSERVED EVERYTHING AROUND ME – PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS. SO I STARTED TO PAINT AND WRITE AT A VERY EARLY AGE.” EELKJE VANDERMEULEN-SMART She was also struck at the time by how relatively little information on the subject was actually available. So a seed was planted to further explore this at some point and in some way. In 2011, she also attended the funeral of Gordon Tootoosis in Saskatchewan with her husband Ray, as they were living nearby the community where the service was being held. They both had admired Tootoosis, who was born on the Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, for his work as an actor in such movies as Legends of the Fall and the popular Canadian TV series North of 60.

VanderMeulen-Smart was also hoping Brad Pitt would be in attendance – unfortunately he was a no-show. But attending that service also proved to be a source of inspiration for Eelkje to further explore the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of those early peoples who made such an arduous journey to a mysterious, new land. A growing interest in her husband’s heritage as Metis was also fueling her interest in history in general as well.

“I think it was at that moment that I decided to start writing this book.”

So for the next three summers, which they spent at their cabin in Saskatchewan, Eelkje hand-wrote the entire novel. At first it wasn’t exactly an easy process, but she found that as she delved deeper into the lives of the characters and their day-to-day experiences,

the plot unfolded quite naturally. “I would just imagine myself there,” she explains.

And although she didn’t have an ending in mind per se, she knew when the story was complete. She recalls seeing the published version for the first time. “I remember thinking, at last,” she said with a smile.

“It felt really good.”

College rolls out details of new arts season There will be plenty of music, drama and comedy starting this fall as Red Deer College staff and students gear up to launch the new season of entertainment.

RDC’s School of Creative Arts season is set to begin in September with nearly 50 performances and exhibitions scheduled through to June.

Theatre highlights include Almost, Maine by John Cariani. One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways.

Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded.

And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same.

Did you know exercise can make you fat?

Wait a second - what? How can exercise make you fat?

Easy. But let’s dig into a few things first.

As I was working with a client last week who had ‘bad balance’ (which by the way is not true - she was just out of practice), we talked about how things change as we age.

I have a three and one-half-year old, and we do not have to tell him to exercise, he does it all day long. Kids are smart that way. They run, jump, lift things, stretch, bend, twist, balance and PLAY all day long.

They constantly test their limits and see what happens if they climb this, or balance on that (well, ok, kids who aren’t glued to electronic devices, but that’s a totally different soap box).

Kids learn great balance because they spend a ton of time each day OFF balance, learning to compensate.

What happens when we start to get older? Exercise becomes a class we have to take in school and get marks on.

Then as adults, unless we make an effort, it goes away completely. Traded in for a desk, a car seat, a couch, a chair etc. Or manual labour, or standing all day or something similar.

We stop playing.

Let me ask you something: do you enjoy exercise? Is it fun? Or something you do because you ‘have to’ or ‘need to’. Here is the problem (and the source of the fat gain): If you do not like exercise, and you do it because you ‘have to’ or ‘should’, and you drag yourself to the gym, or to your training appointment or force yourself to get on your treadmill, you are doomed to fail. Why? Because we as human beings, compensate for anything that we deem to be suffering, by seeking pleasure.

Had a hard day at work? Time for a treat!

After all, you deserve it!

If you think that exercise is some sort of terrible thing you have to endure, then the likelihood of you justifying a donut, or a 500 calorie beverage or some other indulgence to compensate for your suffering is beyond your ability to counteract in most cases. It’s human nature, and it’s powerful!

Have you ever gone hiking in the mountains on a beautiful day, got to the top and enjoyed a nice healthy bag of trail mix and a bottle of water? Me too! It’s a favourite thing to do!

Now picture climbing a stepper or an elliptical trainer for two hours in a gym

Of course, it doesn’t have to be that way!

We really need to put the FUN back into exercise!

For that stepper workout, you could play

your favourite music, or watch a great movie you love, or listen to a book on tape that really inspires you. Instead of wandering around the weight floor picking this and that to lift and count, go to boot camp with your friends and have a BLAST! Try a fitness class where fun is the key!

Another way to help, is to choose something that will help you get fit that you genuinely love to do, like dancing, or cycling, or stand up paddle boarding, or kayaking down a river. You will not only get fitter, but you will be having FUN and your quest after the session is to nourish your body with good food, rather than have a treat to compensate for the awful torture session

you were forced to endure. The fact is: exercise plus good nutrition works - it really does.

But if you hate exercise, then you are pretty much guaranteed to feel the need to have a treat that likely won’t support your goals of leaner, stronger, better. At that point, you will out eat your training, and get the opposite result you wanted. So either do something fun, or make what you do fun, and enjoy eating to fuel your amazing body, rather than satisfy your need to have an unhealthy reward for your suffering.

Colonoscopy - if it’s good for the president, it’s good for you How foolish some people are.

Even when it means dying from a large bowel cancer at an early age. I`ve seen it happen many times over the years. So here are 10 points that can prevent this needless tragedy.

Two – colon cancer usually starts in the inner lining of the intestine. A polyp, a fleshy growth, slowly develops, often remaining non-cancerous for years. But, when polyps turn into cancer, 95% called adenocarcinomas, by this time cancerous cells have spread to the liver and other parts of the body. Now treatment is like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped.

Three – do not conclude you can wait until early symptoms appear and then consult your doctor. This is the same as trying to purchase insurance on your home after it’s been destroyed by fire. You can have an advanced malignancy without any early symptoms. This is one point you should never forget.

Four – the first warning sign

And on rare occasions, an enlarging cancer will cause intestinal obstruction.

Five - the best way to diagnose a precancerous bowel polyp is by colonoscopy. A lighted flexible instrument is inserted into the rectum and gradually and slowly inched forward until it has explored the entire large bowel. If a polyp is discovered a wired loop is placed around it and the polyp removed.

Six – some patients who refuse the colonoscopy procedure can use a test to check for blood in the stool that cannot be seen by the naked eye. But if the test is

Nine – there’s no general agreement on when to have a colonoscopy. Ninty per cent of colon cancer occurs after 50 years of age. But since some begin earlier, I believe it’s prudent to have a colonoscopy in the early 30s.

Moreover, since 10 to 15% of colon malignancies occur in those with a close relative who has the disease, all the more reason to arrange for an early colonoscopy.

It’s a win/win situation.

Ten – if I still haven’t convinced you that colonoscopy can save your life, what should you do? I’d suggest seeing a psychiatrist. After all, isn’t it reasonable to seek an answer for why anyone would refuse a sure cure for colon cancer?

Buccaneers heading to Alberta Football League semi-finals

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Central Alberta Buccaneers are advancing to the Alberta Football League semi-finals following a 20-17 win over the Edmonton Stallions at ME Global Athletic Park in Lacombe this past Saturday evening.

The back and forth battle between the Buccaneers and the Stallions saw the two teams trading touchdowns with the Bucs defense bringing strong pressure on the Stallions quarterback throughout the first two quarters.

Despite their strong defense the Bucs gave up two touchdowns and a field goal in the first half.

However, the team rallied and responded to the Stallions loose defense through a string of both running and passing plays to leave a score of 14-17 on the board at the end of the half.

After half-time the two teams returned to the field in what Todd Lewis, linebacker for the Buccaneers and chairman of the board, called a, “Game of defensive attrition.”

Lewis added the ball was punted often by both teams causing a battle for field position.

Eventually, the Bucs would drive close enough to the Stallion end zone for the field goal unit to take formation. They tied the game in the third at 17-17.

With a minute left, Buccaneers number five Tylor Johannesson would split the uprights for the game winning field goal, making the score 20-17 and, as a result, earning the Bucs a semi-finals berth.

This back and forth battle wasn’t the first time the Buccaneers had taken on the Stallions, having met the team in regular season play where they were able to edge the Stallions in a close 2014 battle.

Lewis explained the team was prepared for a tough match.

“During the week’s practices leading up to the game, we knew

Lawrence praised the gutsy performance of Burzuk, saying that he, “Followed the game plan to a tee and only had one incomplete pass.”

Local swimmer recognized at Western Canada Games

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A Red Deer College student and Red Deer Catalina Swim Club member was successful earlier this month at the 2015 Western Canada Games held in Fort McMurray.

Hidde Guerts, 20, brought home four silver medals and one gold medal from the games in which he also broke one of his personal best records.

The talented young athlete competed in the 50m freestyle para, 100m freestyle para, 100m breaststroke para, 100m butterfly para and 100m individual medley para event, in which he reached his goal of medaling in all his events.

Guerts is no stranger to the international platform having competed in the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, as well as the 2013 Special Olympics Nation-

als in Vancouver, and the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie.

Having graduated from Notre Dame High School in June 2014, Guerts is currently enrolled at RDC where he will begin open studies in September.

“I’m committed to the sport because I love the water; feel one with the water.” said Guerts on his chosen sport. “I want to go all the way, hopefully one day I’d like to be in the Paralympics.”

Anneke Willers, Guerts’ mother, explained the star swimmer took his first lesson at the age of five, advancing through the Red Cross children’s program but was not swimming competitively during this time.

At 16 he joined the Special Olympics Swim Club in Red Deer and the following spring joined the Innisfail Dolphins Swim Club where he would win his first medal at a local competition in Ponoka allowing his spot at the

Canada Summer Games.

“I had to make qualifying times to compete alongside regular athletes in Quebec as a Special Olympian,” explained Guerts adding, “It went well; I was fifth for the 50 and 100 metre back, fifth for the 50 metre Breast and ninth and eleventh for the 100 metre and 50 metre freestyle. Overall I came out as fifth in my category.”

Guerts is an active member of the Alberta Sport Development Centre where he takes part in training to gain strength in the pool.

“THE ASDC gives me great dry land work outs and overall more knowledge that will help me to be a better athlete,” said Guerts.

“I’m a big fan of the United States swimmer Michael Phelps who has won more Olympic medals than any other athlete in history including 11 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.”

“Red Deer has had a strong baseball community for years and years,” said Hanna. “We’ve always had really strong minor ball programs in the City and with the Riggers, Stags and Razorbacks providing some top notch competitive opportunities there are plenty of talented players wanting to continue playing.”

The local league contains six teams from Red Deer and one from Lacombe, with Hanna adding he and the league hope to find enough players to begin an eighth team next season to round out the league. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

President of the Red Deer Twilight, Blair Hanna, said the league contains players anywhere from 30- to 72-years-old and is a great way to keep active later in life.

Understanding what home owners are looking for in design Being an interior designer for almost 20 years has taught me a great deal about home design and it has taught me even more about human emotion, relationships and what makes people tick.

When you are involved in developing a client’s personal space it can get emotional and, well, personal!

Over the years I have had many strange and endearing requests from clients which stick in my memory banks, there are many stories I could share but these few are the ones that seem to stay with me.

One of my favorites is an older gentleman who came in years ago looking for carpet; as we chatted back and forth he mentioned his golden retriever and said how much seeing the hair on the carpet bothered him.

I jokingly suggested that we choose a carpet which is the same colour as the pup to ease his irritation.

WYSE His face lit up and he thought that was a fantastic idea.

Before I could respond he was heading for the door saying, “I will be back in a minute”, a few minutes later he pulled back into the parking lot and who was in the passenger seat?

You guessed it, the dog! We took samples out to the car until we found the right shade of golden; his project was on the go and he was extremely happy. The dog was pretty sweet too, it isn’t often that I get my face licked while I am showing carpet samples.

A couple I helped had a very specific request.

The wife wanted very dark carpet in the family room. The colour could be lighter in other areas of the house but the family room needed to be dark.

As they parried back and forth I got the sense that the husband did not want dark carpet but his wife was not to be moved – she was insistent.

I probed with a few questions when the wife turned to me and blurted out, “His feet are SO DIRTY and he rubs them on the carpet constantly when we watch TV, he’s like a cricket always rubbing his feet back and forth.”

Her poor husband! He turned a few shades of red and I knew she had spoken the truth and I realized why she wanted dark carpet. My recovery was swift and professional and eventually we found the right shade of carpet and had smaller mats made up for his feet – problem solved, marital harmony restored. From countertop

selections that hide coffee stains because a client didn’t like wiping her counters to bathroom floors chosen to minimize showing hair (yes, even the unmentionable kind) the requests are sometimes baffling and often hilarious.

When a client chooses a palette because it matches her pet bunny you know a certain rabbit is a very important part of her life and you roll with it – after meeting the rabbit of course!

The homes we live in are the ultimate expression of our personal space and the show of trust when you hire someone to come in and help you develop that space can be nerve-wracking.

Even if requests seem strange, trust in the fact that most designers have witnessed even stranger and we are able to help you with any request you may have.

Finding the best source of mortgage advice It may seem an odd question with a very obvious answer but you would be surprised how few people consider this when approaching their bank for mortgage advice. When you deal with a bank employee or a mobile mortgage representative (also a bank employee), you need to know that their primary responsibility is to look out for the bank’s best interest.

In 2009, when a client approached their bank’s mortgage specialist to ex-

plore their refinancing option, the specialist had them approved for what they considered to be a good rate with good terms.

The clients happily signed their mortgage documents and went on their way happy with their new terms.

If that was the end of the story I wouldn’t be writing this blog, however, that was not the case.

This year, the clients decided to sell their home and move up to a larger house

that could accommodate their growing family.

After consulting a realtor, they phoned their bank to find out what options were available to them.

The rate and terms offered by the bank were not competitive with current market offerings so the clients asked what the cost to buy out their mortgage would be.

After using the bank’s online calculator, they figured their prepayment penalty would be in the $5,300

range. Needless to say, the clients were completely floored when the bank representative told them their penalty would be in the neighbourhood of $22,000.

After several moments of shock, the clients asked the representative how this could be.

The answer they received was that their specialist had provided them with a discounted rate on their last refinance and because of that they were penalized an additional 1.85%

in their penalty calculation which accounted for the additional $16,000.

In the end, the additional penalty did not leave the client with enough equity in their home to sell and purchase a new property.

So ultimately, that rate that the clients received resulted in a considerable amount of hardship down the road.

How you can avoid damaging water infiltration Water damage can easily turn into a terrible nightmare like this: Melanie Smith says she woke up one morning to an inch of water across her basement floor. This catastrophe was not part of her weekend plans, nor were the hours of clean-up and repair that were needed.

Many of her treasured possessions could not be replaced. Some of the risks of water infiltration, however, can be prevented.

Regular inspection and rigourous maintenance of the roof, gutters and foundation will give you the best protection since problems usually start in those areas.

Be sure to check your roof regularly.

It is essential to replace or repair any damaged shingles as water can easily seep through cracks.

Trees near the roof should be trimmed

to prevent branches from causing damage by rubbing or falling on it.

In winter, it is a good idea to regularly remove accumulated snow and ice which create considerable weight on the house.

It is also important to clean the gutters since accumulated leaves and debris can easily clog them, causing water to rise to the fascia board and roof. Furthermore, it is necessary to avoid any overflow caused by obstructions, as this excess water falls very near the foundation.

“A simple and effective way to prevent debris from clogging gutters is to install gutter protection,” says Jonathan Boulanger, the product development manager at Alu-Rex, a leading name in rain gutter products.

Take time to learn about this option first

however. For example, Boulanger warns against the low-end gutter protection systems because large holes allow leaves into the gutter making the installation useless. Instead, choose a product that offers the perfect balance between water drainage and debris filtration. In the same way, home foundations are also vulnerable to water infiltration and must be protected.

First, check for cracks, since any opening in the foundation can cause major problems.

“Ensure that water is directed away from the house,” Boulanger continues. “A

slight slope in the ground a few feet around the foundation is usually sufficient. Also, make sure that downspouts carry rainwater away from the foundation.

To that effect, you can use one of our downspout extensions. They will carry water far away from the home, preventing water infiltration in the foundation.”

Most of all, avoid unnecessary hassles, he says. Make sure to regularly inspect the roof, windows, gutters and foundation to avoid costly repair due to negligence. A house is a huge investment, protect it. www.newscanada.com

Product Demonstrators for our client in Red Deer, AB. The ideal candidates will use their energy and enthusiasm to engage consumers in a conďŹ dent manner and provide them with knowledgeable information on the company's product in select retail locations (ie Costco, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond).

You will create a positive experience with the store and the consumers; assisting in the sale of the products to achieve company goals. Demonstrators must work Thursdays Fridays Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon until 6pm within an assigned retail location. You'll need to be friendly and engaging to attract the attention of busy customers and passersby!!!

Capture consumers’ attention to participate in high energy, captivating in-store demonstrations and model all aspects of the company's brand, culture, and passion for technology.

Be a credible product and brand expert by educating consumers on the beneďŹ ts and features of the companies products and actively listening to consumers to conďŹ dently recommend appropriate products.

Coordinate retail event and/or ďŹ eld campaign activities including setup, visual merchandising, and inventory control.

Process and track retail event and/or ďŹ eld campaign sales.

Assist the retail event, sales promotion and supervisor/manager with any day to day administrative support as required.

Reporter/Photographer The Red Deer Express, one of Alberta’s leading community newspapers, has an immediate opening for a reporter/photographer.

This is a shared position between the Red Deer Express and the Lacombe Express. Both papers are publications within the Black Press group which publishes more than 150 other publications.

This position is full time with approximately three days per week spent in the Red Deer ofďŹ ce and two days per week assisting our Lacombe Express editor in the Lacombe ofďŹ ce.

Primary Focus: Covering community news for both cities.

Providing a range of feature/human interest stories as well as some sports writing.

There is some weekend and evening work required.

The successful applicant will have exceptional writing and communication skills and a strong understanding of grammar and Canadian Press style.

A reliable vehicle and your own camera equipment is a must.
