Mission bank robber arrested after standoff Suspect held woman hostage for hours Kevin MILLS Mission Record

Mission RCMP have arrested and charged a suspect in relation to a bank robbery, bomb threat and hostage situation that occurred on Friday.

The suspect has been identified as 34-yearold Jason James Allison.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21,

the male suspect entered the Scotiabank on First Avenue in downtown Mission.

He allegedly demanded money and indicated that he had an explosive device. He then fled from the bank with a small amount of cash, leaving behind the bag he had been carrying.

The area was evacuated, the RCMP explosive disposal unit was called to the scene, and a bomb removal robot was deployed.

It was determined that the bag did not contain an explosive device.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. the same day, Mission RCMP officers on patrol observed a man who matched the description of the suspect from the bank robbery.

Sex offender’s presence protested

Residents concerned about James Conway living in area Residents on a rural street in the community of Bradner held a rally on Sunday morning to protest that convicted sex offender James Conway is living in their neighbourhood.

About 100 people turned out for the rally and held signs with messages such as “Protect our children” and “Prison, not neighbourhoods.”

They stopped in front of the home on Joanita Place that is occupied

by Conway and chanted “Conway, go away!” over and over.

About half a dozen Abbotsford Police officers were on hand, but the protest remained peaceful.

Twenty minutes into the rally, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun stood before the crowd to answer questions from residents concerned about having a sex offender in their midst.

“I’m not happy about this. I get what you’re concerned about,” Braun said, telling the crowd that he has seven grandchildren of his own.

Braun said municipal governments have no control over where offenders can live, and he didn’t know about

BC Corrections spokesperson Cindy Rose said the agency and the APD recently met with some of the neighbours to discuss their concerns.

She emphasized that the province, BC Corrections, police and public bodies do not have the legal authority to tell offenders in which community they can or cannot live. She said it is solely up to a judge to issue any limits on residency.

Two of Abbotsford’s major cultural institutions, The Reach Gallery Museum, and the MSA Museum Society, which operates Trethewey House Heritage Site, will merge into a single arts and heritage organization.

Yvonne Hayden, president of the MSA Museum Society board, said the two organizations with similar mandates have long had reasons to work together.

“There was hope and expectation when The Reach was originally built this would happen, but it didn’t,” she said. “I don’t know all the political reasons behind it, but it didn’t. I’m happy it did now. It’s a real natural fit.”

The combined organization will continue to operate both The Reach building and Trethewey House, and they plan to expand and improve community programming.

Milt Walker, chair of The Reach board of directors, said, “From an economical perspective it only makes sense that by combining both human and fiscal resources the two organizations will serve the community more efficiently and effectively.”

Kelly Railton, the executive director of the MSA Museum Society, said the best part of the amalgamation is that The Reach’s historical archives and the society’s collection of artifacts can be studied and displayed together. The two organizations have been planning a joint exhibition for over a year.

In December, “Voices of the Valley” will display the archival documents together with important Abbotsford artifacts.

Opened in 2008, The Reach is an arts centre and gallery near city hall at 32388 Veterans Way, regularly hosting diverse fine art exhibitions and art classes. An archive of historic local documents is also maintained at the facility. The MSA Museum Society maintains the historic Trethewey House, built in 1920 near Mill Lake, and a collection of local historical artifacts.

The MSA Museum Society’s membership voted in favour of the merger at a meeting on Aug. 24, which was announced to members as “a proposal to establish a new governance and operating structure that will preserve, protect, and present the collections in keeping with the society’s mandate and purpose.”

The two groups hope to fully execute the merger by January of 2016.

She said more control valves are also needed, to control any spill in the future.

“This is really important not only for the concerns of the public who live [on Sumas Mountain], but also for the biodiversity and the environment,” she said.

The City of Abbotsford still has unresolved issues with Kinder Morgan Canada’s proposal to twin its Trans Mountain pipeline after the company’s latest submission to the National Energy Board last week.

And a local councillor says the company needs to do more to mitigate the effects of an expanded pipeline on both the environment and local coffers.

Kinder Morgan is proposing to twin the line to increase shipments of diluted bitumen from northern Alberta. The $5.4 billion expansion project would nearly triple the line’s capacity to 890,000 barrels per day.

The proposal would also see the construction of an additional tank

to the Sumas Pump Station and Terminal, bringing the total there to seven. Capacity at the terminal would increase from 715,000 to 890,000 barrels.

In May, a report suggested Abbotsford would incur $17 million in additional costs over the next 50 years to construct and maintain infrastructure impacted by the pipeline, which runs for nearly 30 kilometres through the city.

Last week, Kinder Morgan replied to the study – which was commissioned by five Lower Mainland municipalities – as part of a multipart response to the National Energy Board.

The company said the study was flawed and “based upon a number of unsubstantiated assumptions or incomplete information that

Measure of risk inevitable This spring, a study commissioned by several Lower Mainland municipalities suggested that the twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline could cost Abbotsford as much as $17 million over the next 50 years, to construct and maintain infrastructure impacted by the pipeline.

Not surprisingly, Kinder Morgan strongly refuted the conclusions, which it claimed were based on assumptions, incomplete information and the absence of mitigating efforts by both parties.

Or perhaps the report was a worstcase scenario based on real possibilities.

In any case, it highlighted a number of areas of concern that the City of Abbotsford is fully justified in questioning and demanding solutions and assurances.

Some concerns are relatively easy to address, by ensuring a significant degree of guarantee of protection, such as costs associated with civic infrastructure.

Good advance and ongoing planning

should identify issues requiring special compensation.

It’s then a matter of negotiating those terms and, as Coun. Patricia Ross maintains, getting commitments in writing.

Such protections are not as straightforward, or even possible, when it comes to environmental issues and concerns.

While Kinder Morgan can be required to go to extreme lengths to contain or mitigate possible spills or leaks, it’s unrealistic to expect a 100 per cent guarantee of safety, despite vast sums spent on protection measures.

Should that mean the termination of the project? No. Like it or not, this society is still hugely dependent upon oil, for countless products as well as transportation, heating, etc. Whether it’s delivered by tankers, trains or pipelines, there will always be degrees of risk.

But should it motivate us to work toward a green, clean future?

Absolutely.

Problematic would be a mirror of the California situation, where some communities are running out of water. Not water to waste on clean pavement, but water, period. The grass is brown and the shrubs are dying.

The solution would seem to be to start to shift how we landscape. Lots of bark mulch, plants that don’t require a lot of water, domestic cisterns to store the water that does fall for later use, and the purchase of a good quality broom would be an excellent start.

If this is the new reality, a significantly drier climate, it makes no sense to drain the water available to us for such ridiculous uses.

Further to Dennis Cook’s Aug. 21 letter: His solution to an ongoing drought that looks to continue is to drain another water source?

This seems rather shortsighted.

He writes that “the long-range weather forecast says warm winter and another hot summer.”

If that’s the case, what is needed is a long-term revisiting of the water situation.

To drain a source that won’t be replenished because of a change in precipitation is short-sighted.

We have water. We can drink, and clean ourselves and our clothes.

The fact that people cannot “wash the outside of their homes, their cars, their driveways” is not terribly dire.

The NDP have announced their candidate for the newly created MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon riding.

Dennis Adamson, the director for Electoral Area B in the Fraser Valley Regional District, won a contested nomination, according to the NDP’s Tim Chu. Adamson beat out Kevin Whitney, the chief of the T’it’q’et First Nation near Lillooet, for the nomination.

Chu said around 150 votes were cast, but did not provide a breakdown of those votes.

With Adamson now nominated, all four parties have chosen candidates for the Mission-MatsquiFraser Canyon riding, which includes parts of Abbotsford north of Bateman and Maclure roads, along with Mission, Agassiz and several Fraser Valley communities up to Lillooet in the north.

Adamson will face Jati Sidhu of the Liberals, Arthur Green of the Green Party, Brad Vis of the Conservative Party and independent Wyatt Scott.

Police place video cameras Goal to suppress violence after two recent shootings the ongoing “Townline Hill conflict” involving two groups of men in west Abbotsford.

MacDonald said police hope the cameras will deter not only violent activity in the neighbourhood but other types of incidents – such as vandalism and mischief – that have occurred.

“We want them to know we’re watching them,” he said.

He said police don’t expect the video surveillance equipment to solve all the problems going on in the area, but it is among the tactics being used, which also include an increased patrol presence.

MacDonald said police are relying on residents to report suspicious activity as it occurs and are requesting that homeowners with security cameras ensure that the systems are in working order.

“Video evidence has been an integral component of many of our investigations,” he said.

In response to two recent shootings on Sandpiper Drive, the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has installed video surveillance equipment along the street.

Police announced the move on Friday, and Const. Ian MacDonald said they hope that it serves as a “suppression technique” in curbing further incidents.

The first shooting on the street took place Aug. 6, when a 2013 Volkswagen in the driveway of a home in the 30500 block of Sandpiper was struck with several bullets, but no one was injured.

The second incident was on Monday, Aug. 17 in the 30700 block. Residents reported hearing five or six gunshots, and police found shell casings on the road.

They soon discovered that a 23-year-old man had shown up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Police have said they believe the incidents are connected to

Concert a benefit for Rock Creek

A concert on Friday, Aug. 28 in Abbotsford raises funds for people affected by the Rock Creek wildfire.

Parents sentenced for sexual abuse of daughter Six and four years for assaulting teen for years Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A couple who sexually assaulted their teenage daughter, saying they were trying to educate her about sex through activity the dad termed as “family fun,” have been sentenced to prison.

The man was sentenced July 30 in Abbotsford provincial court to six years in jail for sexual assault.

The woman was sentenced to four years for sexual assault and nine months for obstructing justice.

The pair cannot be named, due to a publication ban that protects the identity of the victim.

The court was told that the parents coerced their daughter, starting at the age of 13, to participate in sexual activity with them.

“They did so under the guise of supposedly educating their child about sex, convincing her that it would be best for them to demonstrate sexual activity in the child’s presence,” said Judge Kenneth Skilnick in his ruling.

The assault included the father taking his daughter’s virginity. The mother also participated in the abuse, often as the father watched.

The court was told that the abuse occurred frequently over a period of about three years. The offences came to light in 2013, when the Ministry of Children and Family Development became aware of the situation, and the Abbotsford Police Department started an investigation.

The parents were charged and the child was placed in foster care, but when she later ran into her mother at a local store, the mom told her daughter

that if the matter went to trial, she should lie about what happened.

A trial was avoided when the couple later pleaded guilty to their charges.

In their pre-sentence reports, the pair both said they had been raised in homes with alcoholic fathers and had been sexually abused as children – the man by an older boy and the woman by two cousins.

Both also suffered from depression and other mental health issues, the report indicated.

The parents each said they hoped their daughter would forgive them and that they could continue a relationship with her.

In a victim impact statement to the court, the daughter said she mourns the loss of both of her parents and of the love and nurturing they denied her.

“They have taken so much from me, a lot of which I will never get back. It saddens me that when I have kids they will grow up not knowing their grandparents … They are the only parents I will ever know and I will always love them,” she stated.

The judge said that despite the daughter having been “horribly betrayed by the two adults she trusted most to protect her,” she presents herself as a “very intelligent, articulate and thoughtful young woman.”

“Her courage in cooperating with the prosecution of these offences is inspiring. By doing so, she honours the many other children who are victimized and who are unable to protect themselves or speak up for themselves,” Skilnick added.

Included in the book, and published as a stand-alone volume, is The Harper Record, which lists various policies, announcements and accomplishments of the current prime minister.

The books include an endorsement by Abbotsford MP Ed Fast and a foreword by Preston REDEKOP Manning.

Redekop, a former political science professor at Trinity Western University and Wilfrid Laurier University, said he’s an ideological conservative but not a member of the party. He said a similar book could easily be written about the NDP or the Liberals, given those parties’ long histories.

Redekop started the books more than seven years ago, and called the process “a challenge but also a delightful task.”

Redekop will be signing books Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at House of James. Books are available at the Garden Park Tower office. Kindle versions of the book are available at Amazon.ca.

Three Abbotsford water polo players — Eric Martel, Brianna Utas and Emily Aikema — have been selected to represent Canada at the Youth Pan American Championships, which started yesterday, August 25, in Kingston, Jamaica.

A top-five finish at the championships in Jamaica would qualify Team Canada for the 2016 World Youth Water Polo championships, which will be hosted in New Zealand for the women and Montenegro for the men.

All three athletes are members of the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club coached by Justin Mitchell and his brother Kevin, who rep-

resented Canada at the 2008 Bejing Olympics.

The trio from Abbotsford were selected by national team coaches at the conclusion of the National Championship League season, during which they were among the leading scorers in the Canada-wide league.

Martel and Aikema, both 17, will be starting their senior year of high school this September.

Aikema attends W.J. Mouat while Martel and Utas, 15, are students at Yale Secondary School.

Martel, who was selected for the U18 Canadian water polo team, plays the centre forward position – a physical role which

requires size, skill and a degree of wrestling ability.

Utas, who along with Aikema, will be competing with the U17 national women’s team, is a two-metre guard responsible for checking the opposition centres and co-ordinating offensive attacks.

Earlier this year, Utas captained the U16 Fraser Valley Water Polo Club team that won the 2015 National Championship League and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Aikema is a utility player with versatile speed that offers her the ability to play in all positions.

Wake Championships in You could be the one to win a trip of a lifetime!

Abby go off without a hitch Over 150 amateur and professional wakeboarders attended this year’s Canadian Wake Championships at Valley Wake Park (in Albert Dyck Park) this past weekend.

And despite some initial concern over lower water levels, the competition was unaffected, according to organizer James Balzer, who also claimed top prize at the competition for the eighth time.

“This is the last event of the summer wakeboarders are working towards,” said Balzer. “There were a lot of quality boarders from amateurs to pros.”

Balzer estimated upwards of 200 spectators came out to watch the competitions held Friday through Sunday, which included U9 boys and girls to men’s and women’s amateur and pro divisions.

T h i r t e e n - ye a r- o l d Rip Curl BC Wake Team member Hunter Smith from Deep Cove said this was one of the best organized events he has attended.

“At some points they were running ahead of schedule,” said Smith, who won the Boys 10-13 division in the cable category.

Rip Curl teammate and fellow Deep Cove resident Michela Phillips, 20, said, “It was a fun weekend with a lot of people … and a beautiful site.”

She also said the event ran “really smooth,” explaining this kind of competition usually operates at a slower pace.

Phillips won her amateur women’s division, which qualified her for the pro event Sunday, where she placed fourth.

This year’s nationals boasted more cable riders, which is a newer version of the sport, rather than typical boat-tailing. Traditionally, the trend at nationals is opposite; however, the popularity of cable riding has surged in the last few years.

In all, there were

around 80 or so cable riders at this year’s event, said Balzer.

She was predeceased by her husband John Penrose Evans (1991) and Byron Kindred (2014) and brother Bob. Flora was a very social artsy person. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bowling and cooking. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 10:00 am at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford. Aileen Tapp passed away at the Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC on August 21, 2015.

Aileen was born on July 1, 1926 to Michael and Anne Fedirchuk, in Ethelbert District in Manitoba. She left the family farm in her late teens to work in Dauphin, Manitoba. It was there she came in contact with the Truth and God’s servants.

In 1946 she made her life-long choice to serve God. In 1950 she moved to Winnipeg and pursued a 21 year career of dressmaking. Aileen married Ivan Tapp in October of 1971 and lived in Anaheim, California until they moved to Abbotsford in 1983. She was predeceased by Ivan in 1986.

Aileen is predeceased by her siblings Mary, Alex, Metro, Lena, Paul, EfďŹ e, Peter, Jim, Pauline, Michael and Bill. She is survived by one brother John of Montreal, QC and fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff who cared for her at the Menno Home and to all the workers and friends who stood faithfully by Aunt Aileen. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford with Burial to follow at Hazelwood Cemetery.

George T. Watt “Cowboy� was born March 6, 1931 in Calgary AB. George spent 45 years serving his country and the province of BC; 25 years in the Navy and 20 years as the Sheriff of Abbotsford, BC. He served aboard the HMCS Cayuga during the Korean War and Cuban Missile Crisis.

He was a past board member of the Abbotsford Lions Club, Abbotsford and Kelowna Legion and Kinghaven Treatment Centre of Abbotsford, BC. He spent many years camping, boating and ďŹ shing off of Victoria and later traveling with their trailer throughout BC and Washington State.
